Magnetic flux leakage from the rotor core bridge must be improved in interior permanent magnet motors to improve their performance. The partial non-magnetization of bridges is effective in reducing magnetic flux leakage. In our previous studies, we proposed a new partial nonmagnetization process for silicon steel, which was used for the rotor core. The portion of the silicon steel sheets that becomes a bridge after pressing can be non-magnetized by melting and mixing Ni-Cr-B alloy powder with the silicon steel sheets using a laser beam and then laminated to produce the rotor core. In this study, the effect of B addition to Ni-Cr alloy powder was widely investigated to optimize the B addition amount. Based on the appearance, solidification defect, and magnetic and mechanical strength properties of the improved portion, the optimal content of B was within the range of 0.5-1.0 mass%. Furthermore, core sheet samples with an improved portion, which had the improved length of 1.0mm and has the composition of Fe-13.9 mass%Cr-15.1 mass%Ni-2.3 mass%Si-0.5 mass%B, were prepared by laser and press processing. A rotor core was fabricated using core sheets and evaluated for its magnetic flux and high-speed rotation for practical use. The prototype rotor core exhibited a 32% higher magnetic force and could rotate at speeds of up to 43,000 rotations. Turbine blades are mainly subjected to thermal stress and gradient centrifugal stress in operational conditions. The effects of centrifugal stress on the microstructural degradation of single crystal superalloys under a multiaxial stress state remain unclear. Here, the NiAlReRu component was exposed to high-speed rotation at 20,000 rpm and a high temperature of 1000 °C for 100 h. The analysis indicates that the centrifugal stress causes the distortion of dendrite stems and the aggregation of micropores. The centrifugal stress promotes the formation of interfacial dislocation networks, accompanied by more severe rafting of γ′ phases. These findings provide a comprehensive experimental understanding of the microstructural evolution under simulated turbine blade working conditions, which provides a reference for the subsequent tests under near-service conditions.

On Earth, high-speed rotating blades and rotors experience hypergravity, which is mainly derived from centrifugal force. Aluminum alloys are widely used in high-speed rotating machines. In particular, 7075 aluminum has excellent properties, providing it with great potential for application in high-temperature rotating parts. In this work, the cracking behavior and microstructural evolution characteristics of high-speed rotating blades under different stresses were studied. A specifically designed instrument and blades with multiple necks were assembled, and the stress was tuned by adding weight to the blade tip. Each rotating blade cracked on its root neck, indicating that the gradient hypergravitational force decreased from the root to the tip. The degree of high-temperature cracking obviously increased with a sawtooth-like tip, but the degree of low-temperature cracking did not obviously increase with a smooth tip. A comparison under a constant uniaxial force required a greatly increased ultimate cracking strength that was approximately 10–18 times greater than that under hypergravitational force at the same temperature. Force analysis indicated that the coupling of hypergravitational forces in the normal direction and torsional forces in the tangential direction accelerated cracking. A uniaxial force caused grains to extend along the blade direction. However, a tangential force cut these extended grains to accelerate cracking and grain refining. In this study, real-world simulated service conditions for commercial alloys rotating at high speeds and a new understanding of the mechanical properties of alloys under various severe conditions were provided.

The submitted article focuses on the proposal of a testing device for researching alternative methods of lubricating technical systems, specifically high-speed rolling bearings using lubricants containing nanoparticles. The aim of this research is to verify the functionality of the proposed technical device, whose main task is to ensure the measurement of the functional and operational characteristics of high-speed rolling bearings. The proposed technical device allows us to carry out a series of measurements, primarily for the purpose of selecting specific bearings and secondarily for the purpose of conducting technical diagnostic measurements. The results of these measurements are significant in the selection of suitable nano-particle additives for the lubrication of the tested bearings. The tests was carried out using speeds reaching 110,000 rpm. The uncertain service life of thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) imposes constraints on their secure application. In addressing this uncertainty, this study employs the Monte Carlo simulation method for reliability evaluation, quantifying the risk of TBC peeling. For reliability evaluation, the failure mode needs to be studied to determine failure criteria. The failure mode of high-speed rotating TBCs under gas thermal shock was studied by combining fluid dynamics simulations and experiments. Based on the main failure mode, the corresponding failure criterion was established using the energy release rate, and its limit state equation was derived. After considering the dispersion of parameters, the reliability of TBCs was quantitatively evaluated using failure probability and sensitivity analysis methods. The results show that the main mode is the fracture of the ceramic layer itself, exhibiting a distinctive top-down "step-like" thinning and peeling morphology. The centrifugal force emerges as the main driving force for this failure mode. The failure probability value on the top side of the blade is higher, signifying that coating failure is more likely at this location, aligning with the experimental findings. The key parameters influencing the reliability of TBCs are rotation speed, temperature, and the thermal expansion coefficient. High-speed rotation is an indispensable working state in the service process of aero-engines, therefore, the centrifugal load cannot be ignored in the failure analysis of thermal barrier coatings. However, due to the lack of service environment simulators that can realize high-temperature as well as high-speed rotation, the failure mechanism of high-speed rotation thermal barrier coatings is still unclear. Here, the effects of rotational speed variation on the service life and failure mode of thermal barrier coatings at high temperatures are studied by experiments and finite element method (FEM). The results show that the service life of high-speed rotating thermal barrier coatings decreases with the increase of rotational speed. The failure is mainly governed by the thinning and spalling of the columnar crystal region of the ceramic layer and the delamination and exfoliation of the equiaxed crystal region, rather than the abnormal growth of TGO. Further in-depth analysis shows that the failure of high-speed rotating thermal barrier coatings is mainly due to the joint driving of centrifugal force and wall shear stress, as well as the contribution of thermal fatigue at high temperatures. This work adds to the understanding of the failure mechanism of thermal barrier coatings under extreme working conditions, and also provides guidance for the safe and reliable service of thermal barrier coatings on working blades. Rapid erection is a key technology for modern warfare in vehicle weapon launch systems. It is challenging to attain rapidity with the hydraulic erecting system because of the intensified cavitation in the piston chamber at high speeds, which reduces volumetric efficiency and increases flow pulsation in the typical high-pressure axial piston pump. In this paper, an improved scheme for the cylinder window area overflow surface was proposed to solve this problem. Based on the full cavitation model and the compressible model, a numerical model of the internal flow in the piston pump was developed, and the effect of rotational speeds on the flow and cavitation characteristics of the pump was analysed. The results show that after the improvement, the maximum flow of the pump is increased from 1.765 kg/s to 2.295 kg/s, an increase of 30.028%, and the maximum speed corresponding to the volumetric efficiency of more than 90% is increased from 1500 rpm to 2100 rpm. At high speeds, the improved block can effectively suppress the cavitation and backflow in the piston chamber, improve the volumetric efficiency of the piston pump and reduce the flow pulsation, which is conducive to reducing the vibration and noise of the pump body. In the spin-off acceleration stage during high-speed rotation in space, the deployable arm of the space gravity simulation device must withstand a large axial centrifugal force and a driving torque. In this paper, a large-scale high-speed rotating deployable arm is proposed, and the relevant characteristics during the rotation process are analyzed. A new driving mode of towed deployment is proposed that can lead to the rapid and efficient deployment of a large-scale deployable arm. First, an optimized configuration of a deployable arm is proposed. Second, the deployment driving process of the deployable arm under several different drag driving modes is simulated and analyzed, and a comparative analysis is performed to select a simple and reliable drag deployment driving scheme. Then, the effects of various disturbances on the posture of the deployable arm during the rotation process are explored, guiding the posture control of the deployable arm. Finally, a 10 m four-unit prototype is developed for the stiffness and rotation tests, which verify that the theoretical analysis in this paper is correct. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The turbine blades were directionally solidified by a high-rate solidification process by the Bridgman technique using directional solidified Ni-based master superalloy DZ125 and operated on the engine bench with a high-temperature gas environment of more than 1500 °C from combustor and high-speed rotation of more than 13500 rpm for 400 h. A service-environment-based model was put forward to simulate the distribution of temperature and stress on the DZ125 blade in service. It was found that the distribution of temperature and stress on the serviced DZ125 blade was closely related to its geometric structure. The microstructural evolution of the serviced DZ125 blade was analyzed and the variations of microstructures with temperature and stress were investigated by using a scanning electron microscope. The results revealed that the evolution process of microstructures on the serviced DZ125 blade was different from that of the standard sample tested at constant temperature and uniaxial tensile stress. The reason for this discrepancy was explored using a combination of finite-element calculation and diffusion coefficient calculation.

High-speed rotating motion is an important issue in mechanical systems such as propellers or turbine blades. Difficulties occurs in the simulation of high-speed rotating dynamics, resulting in unexpected and unreliable numerical results. For example, the calculated angular velocity usually doesn't increase linearly but grows until reaching a saturation value under a constant torque. This phenomenon will be more complex in constrained mechanical systems, especially in a flexible system. This work aims to address this issue that arises in the simulation of high-speed rotating dynamics, where a new formulation of non-linear floating frame of reference formulation is proposed to solve constrained flexible system. Pros and cons of various numerical techniques in the field of multibody system dynamics are compared and discussed here. These techniques involve the Euler parameter formulation, local rotational parameters, minimal coordinate set approach and the nonlinear elastic formulation. While the base‐bleed projectile (BBP) is ejected from the muzzle, high‐speed rotation and rapid depressurization in the combustion chamber bring much initial disturbance to the BBP. In order to research the effect of propellant gas on the drag reduction performance for the BBP, a chemical non‐equilibrium flow model is established under the dual environmental stress of high‐speed rotation and rapid depressurization. This numerical model is coupled with a H2‐CO reaction mechanism and propellant burning rate model. Detailed numerical results of flow patterns, heat energy addition, and mass addition for various rotation speeds are discussed. The results show that the supersonic under‐expanded jet gradually transforms into a subsonic jet, and a low‐pressure recirculation zone appears at the wake of BBP. Moreover, the tangential velocity in the combustion chamber presents a typical distribution of the Rankie combined vortex. The high‐pressure jet rapidly expands to the outside low‐pressure environment, and the pressure in the combustion chamber (pc) drops sharply. After 1.15 ms, the outside gas flows back into the combustion chamber, and the rotation increases the fluctuation intensity of the inter flow field. pc reaches 0.718 p0 and remains stable after 4.0 ms. Raising the rotational speed of electro-hydrostatic actuator (EHA) pumps is a useful way to improve their power density. However, gaseous cavitation tends to occur in the displacement chambers at high speed, reducing the effective delivery flow rate of EHA pumps. It is a common approach to reduce the gaseous cavitation by increasing the inlet pressure. However, this conventional approach requires additional devices to boost the inlet line, which decreases the EHA pump’s power density. The contribution of this study is to reduce the gaseous cavitation by introducing inclined cylinder block ports for EHA pumps, which only modifies the cylinder ports and needs no additional devices. A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model was developed to investigate the effects of the inclined direction of cylinder ports on the gaseous cavitation. The simulation results showed that the inward-inclined design of cylinder ports could effectively decrease the gaseous cavitation using centrifugal effects of rotating fluid. Compared with a standard cylinder block, the cylinder block with inward-inclined ports could increase the effective delivery flow rate by 4% at an inlet pressure of 1 MPa and a rotational speed of 20,000 r/min.

The temporal resolution of X‐ray tomography, using a synchrotron radiation X‐ray source, has been improved to millisecond order in recent years. However, the sample must be rotated at a speed of more than a few thousand revolutions per minute, which makes it difficult to control the environment around the sample. In this study, a high‐speed rotation device has been developed, comprising two synchronized coaxial motors movable along the direction of the axis, which can stretch or compress the rotating sample. Here we present a new type of piezoelectric motor that uses flexures and a variable-transmission crank-shaft to produce both full rotary and linear actuation in the same device, at the same frequency as the input (piezoelectric drive) frequency. This multi-modal design weighs only 130 mg and has achieved rotational rates up to 30,000 RPM (orders of magnitude higher than typical piezoelectric motors) and a peak torque of 2.5 μ Nm. In the linear mode, it has demonstrated a blocked force of ±100 mN and a free displacement of ±0.6 mm up to at least 500 Hz in output frequency. The isolation rolling platform inside a passive semi-strapdown inertial navigation system can isolate the high-speed rotation of a projectile via bearing to provide a low rotating speed environment for the angular rate sensors inside the platform in order to further improve the accuracy by reducing its measurement range. Aiming at the problem that the internal bearing cannot withstand high overload, an optimal design method for a high overload buffer structure based on point contact spherical cap structure is proposed. Changing the materials of the spherical caps can reduce the deformation of the two spherical caps during impact and reduce the pivoting friction; at the same time, the upper and lower spherical caps are both forced to separate by the spring force after the impact and to eliminate the influence of the pivoting friction torque that is generated by the contact of two spherical caps on the stability of the isolated rolling platform. By virtue of finite element analysis and ground semi-physical simulation experiments, the feasibility of the design is verified. The experiment results show that the design can play an effectively protective role in anti-high overload, and the maximum deformation radius of the optimized point contact spherical cap structure can be reduced by 40.8%; after the upper and lower spherical caps are separated, the isolation rolling platform’ capability of anti-high-speed rotation can be improved by 52% under the rotation speed of the main shaft at 10 r/s. In this way, the stability of the platform is improved, thus proving the value of the design method in engineering applications.

• A nonlinear order-reduction method is developed for flexible multibody systems. • The details to calculate the modal derivatives are provided. • Geometrically nonlinear elastic forces are explicitly retained. • The degrees of freedom are greatly reduced while retaining the high accuracy. • The proposed method is applicable for beams, plates, and other structures. An accurate and efficient formulation is favorable for dynamic analysis and control in the field of the flexible multibody system. This paper proposes a general nonlinear order-reduction method that can tackle overall motions and large deformations with a significant decrease in degrees of freedom, by incorporating the modal derivative techniques into the referenced nodal coordinate formulation (RNCF) developed earlier. To compute the modal derivatives straightforwardly, the closed-form expression of the tangent stiffness matrix's derivative is obtained. The elastic forces are expressed as cubic polynomials of modal coordinates, such that the geometric nonlinear deformations are explicitly expressed. The effectiveness of the proposed method is validated by several numerical examples. The presented geometrically nonlinear order-reduction method can achieve a great accuracy with a much fewer number of generalized coordinates, and it also inherits the large time step-sizes of the RNCF in dealing with large deformations and high-speed rotations. As one of the most promising micro-machining methods, electrochemical micro-machining is widely used in the field of metal micro-structures. The electrochemical micro-milling on Nickel-base superalloy by using high-speed spiral electrode was studied in detail. Firstly, the electric field and flow field models of micro-electrochemical milling are established and analyzed by the finite element method. Then, the milling profile was predicted and the effect of high-speed rotation of electrodes on electrolyte promotion and secondary electrolysis prevention were analyzed. Secondly, the influence of the main machining parameters, such as rotating speed, electrical parameters, and feed rate on machining precision and efficiency was analyzed experimentally. Finally, by optimizing the machining parameters, a series of micro-graphic structures with a width of about 150 μm were obtained on Nickel-base superalloy 718 by using the spiral electrode with a diameter of 100 μm. The experimental and simulation results show that the high-speed rotation of electrodes can greatly improve the machining efficiency and stability. It was proved that micro-electrochemical milling with the high-speed rotating electrode technique is an effective method for machining micro-metal parts.

Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) are key to improving aero-engine performance. The lifetime assessment of TBCs in a simulation environment is an essential consideration for successful application. Environmental simulators for rotor blade TBCs are still scarce, largely owing to the difficulty in obtaining real-time TBC failure data in extreme environments. In this work, an environmental simulator with high-speed rotation and gas thermal shock characteristics was developed and tested. High-temperature resistant strain gauges and thermocouples were fixed onto the surface of turbine blades by a flame-sprayed Al 2 O 3 layer. The damage evolution and failure mechanism of TBCs were analysed by the real-time detection of strain damage and temperature field. The results reveal only a little fluctuation in the temperature distribution of the TBC surface (122 °C) under the synergistic effect of high-speed rotation and thermal shock, and the strain at each measuring point is tensile. During thermal cycling tests of the TBCs, the strain at a specific point varied from 0.21% to 0.79%. The final thermal shock life was determined to be 156 cycles, thus proving that the coating enables good thermal shock resistance. The spalled area was mainly distributed from the suction surface to the leading edge, and TBC failure could be attributed to crack initiation and propagation caused by the impact of the high-temperature flame and accumulation of fatigue load. This paper reports on the configuration and performance characteristics of a repulsive type magnetic bearing system, which contains a vertical shaft type inner rotor with polygon mirror facets. Generally, low cost, high-speed rotation, power saving and rotational accuracy are important factors for the polygon mirror system. The experimental model introduced in this paper has achieved the stable rotation without contact at 50,000 rpm and low power consumption for a motor drive under low vacuum condition. Two issues, the cost of high-speed camera and the decorrelation between rotated images, are hard to avoid for investigators. In this paper, a systematic solution is presented, which combines high-speed rotation image acquisition using low-speed camera with 3D digital image correlation, both low-cost, flexible and accurate. Firstly, the frequency and initial phase of high-speed rotation are calculated by FFT, and temporal phase-locked signal is generated to trigger the dual-camera asynchronously to collect the circumferential images with equal phase interval. Then a layer-by-layer matching method is proposed to search uncoded targets between two rotated images, while a binocular rotation correlating strategy to correlate the speckle subsets. Finally, the corresponded uncoded targets and speckle subsets are reconstructed in three dimension via the camera calibration results, furtherly the 3D motion and deformation fields can be obtained. Five experiments, including two measurement repeatability tests, an accuracy test, a rigid motion measurement of rotating table and a dynamic deformation measurement of ventilation fan, prove the accuracy and effectiveness of the proposed method. By virtue of finite element analysis and ground semi-physical simulation experiments, the feasibility of the design is verified. The experiment results show that the design can play an effectively protective role in anti-high overload, and the maximum deformation radius of the optimized point contact spherical cap structure can be reduced by 40.8%; after the upper and lower spherical caps are separated, the isolation rolling platform' capability of anti-high-speed rotation can be improved by 52% under the rotation speed of the main shaft at 10 r/s. As one of the most promising micro-machining methods, electrochemical micro-machining is widely used in the field of metal micro-structures. The electrochemical micro-milling on Nickel-base superalloy by using high-speed spiral electrode was studied in detail. Firstly, the electric field and flow field models of micro-electrochemical milling are established and analyzed by the finite element method. Then, the milling profile was predicted and the effect of high-speed rotation of electrodes on electrolyte promotion and secondary electrolysis prevention were analyzed. Secondly, the influence of the main machining parameters, such as rotating speed, electrical parameters, and feed rate on machining precision and efficiency was analyzed experimentally. Finally, by optimizing the machining parameters, a series of micro-graphic structures with a width of about 150 μm were obtained on Nickel-base superalloy 718 by using the spiral electrode with a diameter of 100 μm. The experimental and simulation results show that the high-speed rotation of electrodes can greatly improve the machining efficiency and stability. It was proved that micro-electrochemical milling with the high-speed rotating electrode technique is an effective method for machining micro-metal parts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
