The work proposes an original method for modeling and simulating the triggering of 110 kV interconnection power lines in case of common faults, such as transient or persistent faults. Urban and industrial areas, surrounding urban areas, require a high energy consumption that is being supplied through 110 kV overhead power lines, responsible for distributing power to the industrial and domestic consumers. High voltage distribution power lines are most prone to failure, due to their exposure, affecting a large number of consumers if a fault occurs. Faults of power lines in service certify that currently there is no perfectly controllable operation mode in terms of load rating, environmental factors, insulation resistance, or mechanical resistance, which would allow total avoidance of faults, it is only possible to reduce the impact they have on the network as a whole. Mathematical models have been developed to determine the experimental voltage and current responses describing the fault propagation, expressed as a 7th-degree polynomial curve, as a second-order transfer function or as the Gaussian model type. By comparing these mathematical models, the most probable answers that can lead to the development of a control structure for rapid identification of a fault were obtained, with the possibility of triggering the line protection relay. In the final part of the manuscript, the viability of applying artificial intelligence techniques, for the approached fault management application, is proven. The developed control structure evaluates the nature of the fault and determines a faster reaction of the line protection causing an increase in the performance of the distribution service. This paper presents a novel installation protocol to build a reliable and economical line monitoring system on high voltage power lines. The proposed method is able to iteratively determine the required number of sensors and their installation location for a predefined level of risk. First, it requires a general analysis of the transmission line, which ends with a critical span analysis. Then the risk arising from the variability of weather parameters along the transmission line must be determined. Finally, it is necessary to consider what kind of problem the thermal overheating can cause at the conductor (sagging, annealing) and which additional stages can be used to reduce the risk factor to the permissible level. A case study was investigated with the data of a Central-European high voltage power line to present how the proposed method works. The results showed that there are power lines on which only distributed sensor installation concepts result in a safe and economical solution. Applying the proposed method, a comprehensive and robust sensor system can be implemented, which can be a solid basis for any dynamic line rating (DLR) system.

The purpose of the work is the development of the method for the synthesis of a robust feed-forward active shielding system of the magnetic field, generated by high voltage power lines for reducing the initial magnetic field induction to the sanitary standards level and decreasing the system sensitivity to the plant parameters’ variations. This work is devoted to the solution of a multicriterion stochastic game, in which the vector payoff is calculated based on the Maxwell equations solutions in the quasi-stationary approximation. The multicriterion game solution depends on the multiswarm particles optimization algorithms. The initial parameters for the synthesis of the active shielding system are the location of the high voltage power lines with respect to the protected from transmission line space, geometry and number of buses, operating currents, as well as the size of the protected space and magnetic field induction normative value. The aim is achieved by determination of the number, configuration, spatial arrangement, and currents in compensation coils, setting algorithm of the robust feed-forward active shielding system of the magnetic field, as well as the resulting value of the induction magnetic field at the points of the protected space. New scientific results of the theoretical and field experimental researches of the effectiveness of a single circuit active shielding system with a single compensation coil are carried out. The possibility of reduction of the initial magnetic field induction level is obtained. It is shown that the experimental and calculated magnetic field induction values differ up to 20 %.

In this paper, the effectiveness of lightning overvoltage protection of cables in high voltage overhead cable lines has been analyzed. Because of the high overvoltage level, the cables are protected by surge arresters and by metallic sheath earthing. However, in practice, quite a lot of cases of electricity-evoked damage to the cable outer sheaths are observed, proving that the effectiveness of the protection used is insufficient. As a result, the cables are exposed to environmental factors, especially moisture penetration, which contributes to cable degradation. To explain the causes of this situation, simulation studies were carried out to determine the relevant factors affecting the level of expected overvoltages. The circuit-field model of the overhead cable line in EMTP-ATP, COMSOL and MATLAB software was used for determining overvoltages on the main cable insulation and the outer protective sheath. The studies reveal that the efficiency of the cable insulation overvoltage protection is ensured regardless of the lightning strike location and the crest value of its current. However, the obtained results confirm that no matter the applied protection, the cable outer sheaths may be exposed to overvoltages with higher values than those of the main insulation. Although the analysis was performed for 110 kV lines, the conclusions are general and are also applicable to power lines with higher rated voltages.

- Abstract
High-voltage overhead transmission lines on farmland imply a permanent easement. System operators should compensate for expropriation of land and depreciation of the remaining farm area, but recognize only the former. Therefore, landowners often appeal to the law courts for fairer refunds. This study highlights that the area occupied by plinths and cabins, the height of pylons and the type of intersection are the main sources of depreciation. Moreover, electric transmission lines depreciate the residual farm area, but involving only two narrow strips of land on either side of infrastructures. Finally, the depreciation tends to decrease rapidly as the distance from the transmission line increases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Corona ions produced by high voltage power lines (HVPL) can alter the local atmospheric electrical environment downwind, potentially increasing electrostatic charge on airborne particulates via ion-aerosol attachment. However, previous epidemiological assessments attempting to assess this 'corona ion hypothesis' have used proxies e.g. ion concentration or distance from HVPL, rather than aerosol charge state directly, due to difficulties in modeling this quantity. We present a quasi-1D model incorporating both Gaussian plume dynamics and ion-aerosol and ion-ion interaction microphysics which could be applied to future studies of charged aerosol near HVPL. The response of the model to changes in a range of input parameters is characterized, and validation is attempted by means of comparison with previous work where ion- and aerosol concentrations and properties (including electrical mobility and electric charge states) upwind and downwind of HVPL are measured. Corona ions from high voltage power lines (HVPL) can increase electrostatic charge on airborne pollutant particulates, possibly increasing received dose upon inhalation. To investigate the potential increased risk of childhood leukemia associated with residence near alternating current (AC) HVPL, we measured the particle charge state and atmospheric electricity parameters upwind, downwind and away from HVPL. Although we observed noticeable charge state alteration from background levels, most HVPL do not significantly increase charge magnitude. Particular HVPL types are shown to have most effect, increasing net charge to 15 times that at background. However, the magnitude of charge alteration during rainfall is comparable with the most extreme HVPL measurement. On current evidence, based on the current adult lung model, we suggest that although charge is sometimes enhanced to levels which may alter atmospheric particle dynamics, increased lung deposition is unlikely. Some surveyors claimed that problems were experienced when one collects GPS observations beneath high voltage power lines. They had reported quite large anomalies. Still others had reported no problems beneath high voltage power lines. The current papers study the effect of High Voltage Power Lines "HVPL" on Differential Static GPS observations and results. The research introduces the comparative study for the results of a GPS network. The cases of study are chosen to illustrate the effect of different types and location of high voltage tower lines. Although the results of GPS network analysis have shown a very high accuracy away from tower lines, the worst case discrepancies in elevation ranged between 4 cm to 18 cm under or dear tower lines, and small values discrepancies in east and north (2-8) mm in position of points. Finally, available conclusions andrecommendations are obtained.

- Abstract
The paper presents the electromagnetic interference between an existing high voltage power line and a new designed underground stream gas pipeline intended to be placed in the same distribution corridor. The purpose is to compute the values of induced voltages and currents in an underground gas pipeline, which shares the same right of way with a high voltage power line (HVPL) for different operating conditions, in order to detect the possibility of AC corrosion occurring in the pipeline. Different equivalent soil models are taken into account. The analysis of the induced voltages in metallic structures (gas pipeline) was done using the CDEGS professional analysis and modeling software. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

In recent years, the media impact of the damage from electromagnetic fields generated by high voltage power lines on human health has grown considerably. Hence, judges increasingly require the assessment of the compensation concerning the land depreciation for the ;''perception'' of the health risk from land market operators, regardless of the land use and the ascertainment of the health damage. The aim of this paper is the assessment of the ''perceptive'' devaluation of the Apulia agricultural lands in the presence of high voltage power lines and for different crop systems, in order to present a methodological approach that could support the experts appointed by judges. The analysis clearly shows that the perception of the risk of damage to human health is strongly felt by land market operators, causing an average devaluation of 33% and even up to 50% for greenhouses and farm buildings. Overhead inspections of high voltage power lines are very expensive undertaking. Power lines require systematic inspections to avoid failures and power outages. In each growing season vegetation encroachment is one of the most severe threat. Presently overhead inspections use helicopters and are carried out manually at least once a year. More cost effective systems, using UAV, are being researched. In this paper selected methods from all studied solutions were compared. A cost effective system was proposed using consumer grade UAV with standard camera and deep neural networks for detecting vegetation encroachment.

One of the important elements of the high-voltage transmission line is 110 kV, the damage of which leads to under-supply of electricity, i.e. reducing the reliability of the lines. Damage to the reinforcement from the applied load occurs due to material fatigue. The main causes of damage to the reinforcement are ambient temperatures and wind forces on this element. Periodic kinks of the wire are observed at the places of installation of the connecting and supporting clamps, vibration dampers, and cyclic lateral forces arise. The simultaneous impact of the above efforts leads to fatigue damage to the suspension systems. From the cyclic load, the nodes of rigid structures are destroyed, which bear the maximum load.

We investigated the characteristics of charged aerosols produced by high-voltage power lines (HVPLs) to explore the effects on respiratory disease incidence among those who handle HVPLs. Charged aerosol currents and charged aerosol concentrations were measured over 24 h at 12 sites. Aerosol current effective levels were 2.7 times higher compared to exposed and control sites. This pattern of relative enhancement at exposed sites was seen consistently in all measurements and the difference was 1.7 higher at exposed sites. Correlation analysis among all important variables revealed strong positive correlations between currents and concentration, currents and magnetic field, humidity and concentration, and humidity and particles of 10 µm or less (PM

In Switzerland, the planned transformation of the energy system creates a need for grid expansions. However, grid expansion projects often confront social acceptance issues. The public prefers high-voltage power lines (HVPLs) to be buried underground. Despite the perceived advantages of undergrounding, underground HVPLs can leave visible traces on the surface and are accompanied by electromagnetic field emissions. Given the importance of visual and health impacts on public acceptance of HVPLs, the present study investigates whether providing people with relevant information on these aspects of undergrounding influences people's perception. The results show that, after receiving this information, participants viewed underground HVPLs with lower acceptance, lower perceived benefits, higher perceived risks, and less positive feelings. Although public acceptance remained higher for underground HVPLs compared with overhead HVPLs, our study reveals that information provision reduces perceived differences between the two technologies. Furthermore, our results show that affective reactions to underground HVPLs have an indirect effect on public acceptance. We conclude that providing people with relevant information on possible drawbacks related to undergrounding is a necessary precondition for informed decision-making in the context of grid expansions.

An important application in the growing field of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is in monitoring and inspection of high voltage power lines and electrical networks. The UAV-based monitoring method will save energy, simplify access to impassable or remote areas, reduce inspection cost, and automate the inspection process. However, the battery capacity of a medium scale drone limits their travel distance and mission duration. It is crucial to improve the energy feeding system of drones and overcome the battery capacity problem to foster the use of drones for routine monitoring operations. In this study, we focus on presenting wireless techniques available for drone mission duration improvement as well as discuss and practically examine the most feasible and reliable technique to charge UAV using power lines.

Social sciences’ research on the social acceptance of renewable energy generation and associated technologies (RET), such as high voltage power lines, has been growing in the last decades. In fact, while RET are considered one of the main mitigation measures of climate change, opposition to their construction, and namely from the local communities living nearby, is often found. Important conceptual proposals have been made for a better understanding of opposition, however, this literature still presents some limitations. Here, I will discuss two of them: first, the main focus on the local and, with it, the lack of a relational and critical approach, which recognizes opposition and other types of responses to RET as public participation in RET-related issues; second, the focus on the individual and the consequent lack of examining people’s material practices and engagements. info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersion

This paper consists of an experimental and analytical characterisation of the electromagnetic environment in the medium surrounding a circuit of two 220-Kv power lines running in parallel. The analysis presented is divided into two main parts. The first part concerns an experimental study of the behaviour of the electric and magnetic fields generated by the selected double-circuit at ground level (0 m). While the second part simulates and calculates the field profiles generated by both the lines at different levels above the ground, from 0 m to the level close to the line conductors at 20 m above the ground, using the electrostatic and magnetostatic modules of the COMSOL multi-physics software. The implications of the results are discussed and compared with the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection reference levels for occupational and non-occupational exposures. - Abstract
This paper analyzes some recent judgments of the Constitutional Court regarding the distribution of executive powers in matters between the energetic and the environmental: carbon fund, energy efficiency and protection of birdlife in front of high voltage power lines. In the author's opinion, these judgments highlight that in the field of energy/environmental the selection of applicable competency titles and the determination of the legal nature (subsidies or not) of the actions involved are often more arduous than relevant tasks for the decision of the cases. It is suggested, therefore, the convenience of unifying the examination standards, in order to simplify the argumental development of the judgments and help the understanding of the corresponding jurisprudence.

This work presents the application of an aerial manipulation robot for the semi-autonomous installation of clip-type bird flight diverters on overhead power line cables. A custom-made prototype is designed, developed, and experimentally validated. The proposed solution aims to reduce the cost and risk of current procedures carried out by human operators deployed on suspended carts, lifts, or manned helicopters. The system consists of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) equipped with a custom-made tool. This tool allows the high force required for the diverter installation to be generated, however, it is isolated from the aerial robot through a passive joint. Thus, the aerial robot stability is not compromised during the installation. This paper thoroughly describes the designed prototype and the control system for semi-autonomous operation. Flight experiments conducted in an illustrative scenario validate the performance of the system, the tests were carried out in an indoor testbed using a power line cable mock-up.

Investigations on exposure to electromagnetic have generated conflicting results both in epidemiological and laboratory studies, leaving their possible health consequences largely inconclusive. One of the well-reported reasons for the discrepancies is that there is no generally accepted theory to describe the interactions between the very weak electromagnetic fields and the living cells. This work presents a critical evaluation of three theories that describes the effects of weak electromagnetic fields on channel proteins in the cell membrane. The forced ion vibration model appears to explain the opening of ion channel proteins for exposures to low-frequency magnetic fields in the mili-Tesla range. No resonance frequencies or amplitude window effects are predicted in this method. We identify inconsistencies in the forced vibration model and show that the environmental magnetic fields that would be required to elicit opening of channel proteins are much stronger than predicted by the proposers of this model. The Ion Parametric Resonance model predicts a biological response at well-defined resonance frequencies for magnetic fields exceeding about 10 micro-Tesla. The oscillating magnetic field is assumed to act on proteins together with the earth's static magnetic field. This model predicts amplitude windows. We explain how a purely magnetic interaction, where in a two-stage ion magnetic resonance model, the conformation of a protein is changed under the influence of ions attached to its surface, which in turn, changes the function of the protein, can overcome the inherent signal-to-noise problem caused by electric thermal noise. The hydrogen nuclear polarization model predicts a biological response for oscillating magnetic field strengths above 0.1 micro-Tesla. The presence of a static magnetic field is required, and biological effects can be expected for frequencies below a few hundred hertz. All models except the forced vibration model can be applied for amplitude modulated microwaves. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: High voltage power lines produce corona ions which can create disturbances in the Earth''s vertical potential gradient. It has been hypothesised that these ions mediate adverse health effects such as the observed increase in leukaemia near to power lines. A fixed site monitoring station has been installed near two high voltage power lines which measures the vertical potential gradient throughout the year in all conditions. Ten minute samples of time varying potential gradient are sorted by wind direction to indicate whether the monitoring station is downwind of a power line and assessed for its variability by calculating mean, inter-quartile range and the number of turning points. Mean and inter-quartile range are related to wind direction, showing higher values when the wind is coming from the power lines. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

International Archives of the Photogrammetry, Remote Sensing and Spatial Information Sciences - ISPRS Archives, 2017, Volume 42, Issue 2W8, Pages 249-255 The term Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) is often directly associated with the armed forces due to their widely-criticized use of such vehicles on the modern battlefield. However, with the advancement of UAV technology, the acquisition and operational cost of small civilian UAV have reduced while their functionalities have increased. Therefore, a wide variety of new civilian applications have emerged. Mapping industry has been benefited as affordable UAV can partially replace traditional platforms, such as helicopters and small aircrafts, for low altitude photography acquisition. Although relatively new to the industry, the use of UAV is rapidly commercialized and they are expected to have a sizeable impact on the mapping industry in the coming years. The aim of this work was to test the use of a low-cost UAV for orthophoto production and Digital Surface Model (DSM) creation, to be used for the design of a new 23km high voltage line of Electricity Authority of Cyprus.

The aetiology of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a rare and extremely severe neurodegenerative disease, has been associated with magnetic fields exposure. However, evidence for such a relation in the general population is weak, although the previous null results might also be due to exposure misclassification, or a relationship might exist only for selected subgroups. To test such a hypothesis we carried out a population-based case-control study in two Northern and Southern Italy regions, including 703 ALS cases newly diagnosed from 1998 to 2011 and 2737 controls randomly selected from the residents in the study provinces. Overall, we found that a residence near high-voltage power lines, within the corridors yielding a magnetic fields of ≥0.1 μT, was not associated with an excess disease risk, nor did we identify a dose-response relationship after splitting the exposed corridor according to the 0.1, 0.2 and 0.4 μT cut-points of exposure. These results were confirmed taking into account age at onset, period of diagnosis, sex, geographical area, and length of exposure. Overall, despite the residual possibility of unmeasured confounding or small susceptible subgroups not identified in our study, these results appear to confirm that the exposure to magnetic fields from power lines occurring in the general population is not associated with increased ALS risk.

The planned transition from nuclear power to decentralized renewable energy sources in Switzerland requires the modification and expansion of the electricity grid. However, public acceptance of high-voltage power lines (HVPLs) is generally low. Drawing on the importance of affect in the context of technology acceptance, the goal of the present work was to shed light on people’s affective responses to HVPLs, as well as to examine the influence of different siting options. Results of an online study (N = 94) showed that pictures of landscapes featuring HVPLs evoke significantly stronger negative feelings than pictures of the same landscapes without HVPLs. These differences were greater for positively perceived surroundings such as rural landscapes than for negatively perceived surroundings such as urban landscapes. In a second step, an eye tracking study (N = 95) was conducted to validate these findings and gain insights into people’s decision making. Results show that people pay more attention to HVPLs when they are sited in positively perceived landscapes than when they are sited in negatively perceived landscapes. Furthermore, increased attention on HVPLs was related to a more negative affective evaluation of otherwise positively perceived landscapes. The results underline the importance of siting decisions in the context of grid infrastructure projects.

The purpose of the work is the development of the method for the synthesis of a robust feedforward active shielding system of the magnetic field, generated by high voltage power lines for reducing the initial magnetic field induction to the sanitary standards level and decreasing the system sensitivity to the plant parameters’ variations.
