Root-knot nematodes (RKNs, Meloidogyne spp.) can cause severe yield losses in tomatoes. The Mi-1.2 gene in tomato confers resistance to the Meloidogyne species M. incognita, M. arenaria and M. javanica, which are prevalent in tomato growing areas. However, this resistance breaks down at high soil temperatures (>28°C). Therefore, it is imperative that new resistance sources are identified and incorporated into commercial breeding programmes. We identified a tomato line, MT12, that does not have Mi-1.2 but provides resistance to M. incognita at 32°C soil temperature. An F2 mapping population was generated by crossing the resistant line with a susceptible line, MT17; the segregation ratio showed that the resistance is conferred by a single dominant gene, designated RRKN1 (Resistance to Root-Knot Nematode 1). The RRKN1 gene was mapped using 111 Kompetitive Allele Specific PCR (KASP) markers and characterized. Linkage analysis showed that RRKN1 is located on chromosome 6 and flanking markers placed the locus within a 270 kb interval. High temperatures limit wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) production in many areas around the world. Soil temperatures near the root zone could be as high as the air temperature during wheat grain filling. The objectives of this study were to investigate the effects of high soil temperature on grain yield and related traits of wheat genotypes and to examine their differential responses. Three genotypes, Imam, Fang and Siete Cerros were grown under three temperature conditions in the daytime during grain-filling period: (i) normal air temperature/normal soil temperature (26/26°C), (ii) normal air temperature/high soil temperature (26/38°C) and (iii) high air temperature/high soil temperature (38/38°C). The night temperature was 18/18°C in all treatments. Temperatures during the daytime were increased at a rate of 4°C hr-1 from 18°C to the designated temperature, which was kept for at least 4 hr around noon. The 26/38°C and 38/38°C treatments significantly decreased the chlorophyll content (SPAD) of flag leaves, grain-filling duration, and increased carbohydrate remobilization or loss from the stem and the root, but with varying degrees among genotypes. Grain yield, biomass, grain weight, grains number spike-1 and harvest index at the 38/38°C treatment were significantly lower than at the other two treatments. In Imam, the grain yield was lower at 26/38°C than at 26/26°C, while in Siete Cerros the grain yield, grain weight, grain number spike-1 and harvest index were lower at the 38/38°C treatment than at the other two treatments. These results indicated that high temperature of soil alone (26/38°C) or high temperature of both air and soil (38/38°C) decreased the chlorophyll content and grain-filling duration, and increased carbohydrate remobilization. Genotypic differences in the responses to high soil temperature (26/38°C) and high air/soil temperature (38/38°C) were also observed.

Plant tolerance to high soil temperature may be related to the adjustment in carbon production and utilization. The objective of this study was to determine changes in whole-plant carbon balance and root respiration rate in relation to root tolerance to high soil temperature for two Agrostis grass species varying in heat tolerance. Plant tolerance to high soil temperature was compared between Agrostis scabra, a thermal grass species adapted to chronic high-temperature soils in the geothermal areas in Yellowstone National Park, and creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera), a cultivated grass species adapted to cool climatic regions. Plant roots were exposed to low soil temperature (20°C) or high soil temperature (37°C) for 17 days in water baths placed in a controlled-environment growth chamber. Root biomass and cell membrane stability were determined to evaluate root thermotolerance of both species. Canopy photosynthetic rate (Pn), whole-plant respiration rate, root respiration rate, and total non-structural carbohydrate (TNC) content were measured to assess changes in carbon production and utilization in response to high soil temperature. Root biomass and cell membrane stability declined with increasing soil temperature, but the decline was much less for A. scabra than A. stolonifera, suggesting that roots of A. scabra were more tolerant to heat stress. Canopy Pn decreased and whole-plant respiration rate increased for A. stolonifera, but canopy Pn and respiration rate were unchanged for A. scabra in response to increasing soil temperature. After 17 days of high soil temperature treatment, A. stolonifera exhibited carbon deficit at the whole-plant level, whereas A. scabra maintained positive carbon gain. Root respiration of plants previously grown at 20°C increased after a short-term treatment (24h) at 37°C, but the increase was significantly lower for A. scabra than for A. stolonifera. TNC content in roots did not show response to short-term (24h) changes in temperature and did not exhibit species variations. Leaves of A. scabra, however, maintained TNC content under both low and high temperature regimes. Our results suggest that root thermotolerance of cool-season grasses could be related to the maintenance of positive whole-plant carbon balance, and down-regulation of whole-plant and root respiration rates in response to increasing soil temperature. High soil surface temperature and loosened soil are major limiting factors of plant productivity in arid and semi-arid coal mining areas of China. Moreover, the extensive and illegitimate burning of crop residues is causing environmental pollution; whereas, these residues could be converted to biochar to benefit soil quality. In this study, the effect of wheat straw biochar (WSB) at rates of 0% (control, CK), 1% (low, LB), 2% (medium, MB) and 4% (high, HB) on soil temperature at different depths (5, 10, 15, and 20 cm) and moisture levels (10 and 20%) was investigated under high soil surface temperature of 50 °C and air humidity of 40%. Our data suggested that soil bulk density was inversely, and soil moisture was directly corelated with soil thermal parameters. Moreover, the increasing rate of WSB addition linearly decreased the soil thermal properties. The maximum decrease in soil bulk density at both moisture levels (10% and 20%) was measured in HB treatment compared to respective CKs. The highest decrease in soil thermal conductivity (59.8% and 24.7%) was found under HB treatment in comparison to respective controls (CK10% and CK20% moisture). The soil volumetric heat capacity was also strongly corelated with soil moisture content (r = 0.91). The WSB treatments displayed differential responses to soil temperature. Under 10% soil moisture, temperature of LB, MB and HB treatments was higher as compared to CK at 5–20 cm depth, and MB treated soil had the smallest increase in temperature. At the 15-cm depth, the MB treatment decreased the temperature by 0.93 °C as compared to the CK20%. Therefore, the effect of WSB on soil temperature was influenced by soil moisture content, soil depth and WSB application rates. It suggested that MB treatment could be a useful farming practice for mitigating soil temperature fluctuation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
