Para isto, espécimes de C. major foram coletados ao longo de todo o litoral brasileiro e, de forma particular, mensalmente, durante um ano, na Praia do Gonzaga, região Sudeste do Brasil. Um total de 840 indivíduos (316 machos, 524 fêmeas) foram avaliados. Ocorrendo desde o estado do Pará até Santa Catarina, C. major apresentou um rostro com duas projeções anterolaterais triangulares, pedúnculos oculares com pontas obtusas, dáctilo do quelípodo maior dos machos com uma ponta bífida e margem interna lisa, projeção proximal do carpo com margem reta, mero com porção proximal da margem dorsal dentada, quelípodo menor com borda cortante dentada e um dente grande curvado para frente entre as projeções laterais do telso. Estes animais apresentaram diferenças morfológicas marcantes em comparação aos espécimes de C. major procedentes da Florida (EUA), justificando a separação da grande população do Atlântico Ocidental de C. major e determinando uma nova espécie no gênero, Callichirus brasiliensis sp. nov. Nos capítulos desta dissertação que não trataram de taxonomia, optamos por manter o nome da espécie até o momento aceito, C. major. A morfologia reprodutiva externa destes camarões-fantasma se mostrou distinta entre machos, com gonóporos circulares, localizados no quinto par de pereiópodos, e fêmeas, com gonóporos ovalados, sobre o terceiro par de pereiópodos, além de apresentarem uma abertura vestigial e circular, no quinto par de pereiópodos. As gônadas dos machos são tubulares apresentando uma seção anterior testicular e uma posterior ovariana, enquanto as fêmeas apresentaram dois ovários robustos e intensamente avermelhados na fase pós-puberal. Nenhum órgão interno das fêmeas se comunicou com o gonóporo extra na coxa do quinto pereiópodo, caracterizando essa estrutura como não funcional. O primeiro par de pleópodos é sexualmente dimórfico, sendo reduzido nos machos, composto por dois segmentos, enquanto que nas fêmeas é bem desenvolvido e se compõe por três artículos. Somente fêmeas apresentaram cerdas longas e finas sobre estes apêndices abdominais, durante o período reprodutivo. O segundo pleópodo é birreme em ambos os sexos, com um apêndice interno nas fêmeas e ausência do apêndice masculino nos machos. Por mais que os ovários dos machos produzam ovócitos, a ovoposição parece não ocorrer, sem provas de uma funcionalidade para a reprodução na espécie, assim como os gonóporos não funcionais presentes nas fêmeas (jovens e adultas). Todas as evidências morfológicas externas apontam para um dimorfismo entre os sexos em C. major, parecendo o hermafroditismo ser uma característica não funcional na espécie. A análise do crescimento relativo entre o primeiro par de pereiópodos (quelípodos) e o comprimento da carapaça, demonstrou uma alometria positiva nos juvenis de ambos os sexos, tanto para o comprimento quanto para a largura do carpo. O mesmo ocorreu quanto ao crescimento do comprimento do carpo nos machos adultos. As fêmeas adultas apresentaram uma alometria negativa para as duas relações, assim como os machos adultos, quanto a altura do carpo. O tamanho de maturidade foi síncrono entre os sexos da espécie, sendo estimado em 15 e 16 mm de comprimento de carapaça, para os machos e fêmeas, respectivamente. Além de ser confirmada hetero e homoquelia para ambos os sexos em C. major, com a heteroquelia predominante nos machos (86,9%), enquanto a maioria das fêmeas apresentaram homoquelia (59,3%). Comprovou-se que o comprimento e altura do carpo podem ser utilizados com eficiência para a obtenção do tamanho de maturidade sexual. Adicionalmente, os resultados demonstraram uma heteroquelia mais acentuada nos machos da espécie, existindo grande dimorfismo sexual quanto a morfologia e taxa de crescimento do primeiro par de pereiópodos, tanto nos indivíduos juvenis, quanto nos adultos. Levando em conta as evidências morfológicas (gonóporos, pleópodos 1 e pleópodos 2) de dimorfismo sexual, além da diferença nas taxas de crescimento e tipos quelares entre machos e fêmeas de C. major, os resultados aqui expostos corroboram a ideia de que a espécie apresenta sexos bem definidos, característica de um sistema sexual gonocórico. Também foram confirmadas características vestigiais de hermafroditismo (ovários nos machos e gonóporos extras nas fêmeas), portanto, não sendo funcionais nesta espécie. The present study analyses the taxonomy, external and internal morphology of the reproductive apparatus and relative growth of the ghost shrimp Callichirus major from the coast of Brazil. For this, specimens of C. major were collected along the entire Brazilian coast and, in particular, monthly, for one year, in Gonzaga’s Beach, Southeastern region of Brazil. A total of 840 individuals (316 males, 524 females) were evaluated. Occurring from the state of Pará to Santa Catarina, C. major presented a rostrum with two triangular anterolateral projections, ocular peduncles with obtuse tips, dactyl of the greater chelipod of males with a bifid tip and smooth internal margin, proximal projection of the carpal with straight margin, merus with proximal portion with dentate dorsal margin, smaller chelipod with toothed cutting edge and a large tooth curved forward between the lateral projections of the telson. These animals presented marked morphological differences when compared to specimens of C. major from Florida (USA), justifying the separation of the large Western Atlantic population from C. major and determining a new species in this genus – Callichirus brasiliensis n. sp. In the chapters of this thesis that don’t deal with taxonomy, we chose to keep the name of the species so far accepted, C. major. The external reproductive anatomy of these ghost shrimps was shown to be distinct between males, with circular gonopores located in the fifth pair of pereiopods, and females with oval gonopores on the third pair of pereiopods, in addition having a vestigial circular aperture in the fifth pair of pereiopods. The gonads of the males are tubular presenting an anterior testicular section and a posterior ovarian section, while the females presented two robust and intensely reddish ovaries in the post-pubertal phase. Internal organs of the females don’t communicate with the extra gonopore in the coxal of the fifth pereiopod, characterizing this structure as nonfunctional. In addition, the first pair of pleopods is sexually dimorphic, being reduced in males, composed of two segments, whereas in females it is well developed and is composed of three articles. Only females presented long and slender bristles on these abdominal appendages during the reproductive period. The second pleopod is birramus in both sexes, with an internal appendix in females and absence of the male appendix in males. Although the female gonads of the males produce oocytes, ovoposition doesn’t appear to occur, with no evidence of functionality for reproduction in the species, as well as nonfunctional gonopores present in females (juvenile and adult). All external morphological evidence points to a sexual dimorphism in C. major, and hermaphroditism seems to be a vestigial trait, probably ancestral in the genus Callichirus. The analysis of relative growth between the first pair of pereiopods (chelipods) and carapace length, demonstrated a positive allometry in juveniles of both sexes, for carpal 10 length and width. The same was true for carpal length growth in adult males. Adult females showed a negative allometry for both ratios, as well as adult males, regarding carpal height. The synchronous maturity size, between the sexes of the species, was estimated at 15 and 16 mm of carapace length, for males and females, respectively. In addition, was confirmed heterochely and homoquely for both sexes in C. major, with predominant heteroquely in males (86.9%), while most females presented homoquely (59.3%). It was verified that carpal length and height can be used for analyzes of relative growth, being efficient to obtain the size of sexual maturity. In addition, the results showed a more pronounced heterochely in males of the species, and there is great sexual dimorphism as to the morphology and growth rate of the first pair of pereiopods, in juveniles and adults. Taking into account the morphological evidence (gonopores, pleopods 1 and pleopods 2) of sexual dimorphism, besides the difference in the growth rates and chelar types between males and females of C. major, the results here presented corroborate the idea that the species has sex characteristics of a gonocoric sexual system. Also were registered vestigial hermaphrodite characteristics (ovaries in males and extra gonopores in females), therefore, they are nonfunctional in this species. CAPES: 1688290

The present study focused on the relative or allometric growth of Norway lobster Nephrops norvegicus (L., 1758) from Galicia (northwest Spain). The variables analysed in relation to the carapace length included total size, length and width of chelipeds, length of first pair of male pleopods, width of female abdomen, and live weight. In females, total length, length and width of chelipeds, and abdominal width showed positive allometry. In males, the length and width of chelipeds also showed positive allometry, whereas the total length and first pair of pleopods' length showed negative allometry. Differences were found between males and females regarding the relationship of carapace length to live weight. Most of the individuals sampled (96 %) showed handedness, with the cutter or the crusher claw indistinctly placed on the left or right side. No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2007-06-01 A morphometric study of the xanthoid crab Hexapanopeus schmitti was carried out, using the allometric method. Samples were taken monthly for two years (1998-1999) in the Ubatuba region, northern coast of São Paulo, Brazil. Sex and size were assessed for each specimen, and all crabs were measured to obtain their carapace width (CW) and length (CL), abdomen width (AW) of females, major cheliped propodus length and height (PL and PH), and gonopod length (GL) of males. A total of 301 crabs were analyzed, 209 males and 92 females. The CWs of the crabs ranged from 2.5 to 9.8 mm for males and from 2.8 to 9.4 mm for females. The relative growth equation (y=ax(b)) based on the relationship between GL and CW suggested that males reach their morphological sexual maturity near 6.1 mm CW. In females, the estimated size at 50 % maturity was 4.8 mm CW, based on the relationship of AW vs. CW. Males reach larger sizes than females, which probably favors their ability to guard the females during courtship. In approximately 83 % of the crabs (n= 371), disregarding sex, the right cheliped was larger.
