Abstract

Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate in detail the morphological features of the digenean parasite Aphanurus stossichii isolated from the European anchovy Engraulis encrasicolus using light and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Methods: The specimens of A. stossichii were obtained from the pharynx and stomach of the European E. encrasicolus caught by commercial fishing vessels in the Black Sea. Parasites were killed in a hot normal saline solution, preserved in to 70% ethanol for light microscopic (LM) studies, and in 2.5% glutaraldehyde for SEM. The morphological diagnostic features of A. stossichii were studied in detail under both LM and SEM. Results: The morphological characteristics of the examined adult A. stossichii specimens were found to be similar to the original descriptions describing the basic characteristics of forebody and hindbody shape, the position and shape of the vitellarium, ovary, and and testes, and the shapes of oral and ventral sucker. The measurement data for all morphological diagnostics were provided; photomicrographs of each part of the parasite were presented. Infection prevalence, mean intensity and mean abundance values were 8.89%, 4.5 and 0.4, respectively Conclusion: All available records of A. stossichii morphology are based on light microscope, this is the first study to identification the morphological features of the parasite with SEM. This research is the first on A. stossichii presence in E. encrasicolus on the Turkish Black Sea coast.

2. Physical evidence of direct antagonistic interactions between trematodes in the host gut: the kiss of death?

Abstract

Although within-host competition among parasites if often assumed to occur based on statistical patterns, actual physical evidence of direct antagonistic interactions between parasites, either intraspecific or interspecific, is very rare. Here, we report such evidence between and within two species of hemiurid trematodes infecting the deep-sea grenadier fish Coryphaenoides subserrulatus. We found pairs of worms attached together, with one worm using its ventral sucker against another worm, and sucking out a large protuberance on the victim. We also found single worms showing clear signs of past attacks. There was no evidence that these interactions were more common at high intensities of infection, where the conditions would be expected to be more conducive to competitive interactions. Our findings provide evidence that trematodes may cause some harm to co-occurring individuals, suggesting a direct form of interference competition among intestinal helminths. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Abstract A total of 132 flounder specimens (60 Paralichthys isosceles, 36 Paralichthys patagonicus and 36 Xystreurys rasile) were collected off the coast of the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The fish were measured, necropsied, and had their organs investigated for hemiurid and lecithasterid digenean trematodes and camallanid and cucullanid nematodes. Taxonomic identification of the parasites was based on morphological and morphometric characters and was conducted using bright-field and scanning electron microscopies. The trematodes Lecithochirium monticellii and Aponurus laguncula were found parasitizing P. isosceles, P. patagonicus and X. rasile while the nematodes Procamallanus (Spirocamallanus) halitrophus and Cucullanus bonaerensis were found parasitizing P. isosceles and X. rasile and P. isosceles, P. patagonicus and X. rasile, respectively. Parasite indices of prevalence, mean intensity, mean abundance, and range of infection, as well as infection site, were evaluated for each parasite species. This study allowed to evidence the first occurrence of P. patagonicus by L. monticellii; X. rasile by A. laguncula and P. (S.) halitrophus; and P. isosceles and P. patagonicus by C. bonaerensis in the Western South Atlantic Ocean.

Abstract Abstract: Trichiurus lepturus (Actinopterygii, Perciformes) is a commercially and economically important fish. A total of 60 specimens of this cutlassfish were collected of the coast the municipalities of Niterói and Cabo Frio, state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The fish were measured, necropsied, filleted and had their organs investigated for digenetic trematodes. Taxonomic identification was based on morphological and morphometric characters. The specimens of T. lepturus were parasitized with adult specimens of Lecithochirium monticellii. Parasite indices of prevalence, intensity, mean intensity, abundance, mean abundance, range of infection, and site of infection of parasitic species were evaluated. Notes on the taxonomy of the parasite were also included. This is the first report of L. monticellii parasitizing T. lepturus in Brazil.

Abstract

The present work provides the first ultrastructural analysis of spermatozoa of two digeneans (Aphanurus stossichii (Monticelli, 1891) and Ectenurus lepidus Looss, 1907) belonging to the unexplored subfamilies of the Hemiuridae, namely, the Aphanurinae and the Dinurinae. In March 2019, these hemiurids were collected respectively from the digestive tract of the bogue Boops boops (Teleostei, Sparidae) and the Atlantic horse mackerel Trachurus trachurus (Teleostei, Carangidae) captured in the coastal zone of the Mediterranean Sea, off La Chebba (Tunisia). The ultrastructural study reveals that both spermatozoa exhibit the Bakhoum et al.'s type II of the digenean sperm cells characterized by the presence of two 9+'1' axonemes, an external ornamentation of the plasma membrane not associated with cortical microtubules and located in the anterior part of the spermatozoon, a single bundle of cortical microtubules, the maximum number of cortical microtubules located in a middle part of the sperm cell, and one mitochondrion. Moreover, they share several ultrastructural features with the studied spermatozoa of Hemiuridae such as the presence of two axonemes with the 9+'1' trepaxonematan pattern, a reduced number of parallel cortical microtubules organized into one field with their maximum number located in the median (A. stossichii) or posterior (E. lepidus) part of the spermatozoon, an external ornamentation of the plasma membrane in the anterior part of the spermatozoon, one mitochondrion, a nucleus, and a small amount of glycogen granules. However, the two studied hemiurids could be distinguished by the morphology of the anterior and posterior spermatozoon extremities and the presence of mitochondrial matrix granules in A. stossichii. Abstract

Abstract A total of 100 specimens of the greater lizardfish Saurida tumbil were collected during the current investigation from the coasts of Hurghada City at the Gulf of Suez, Red Sea, Egypt; and necropsied to study their metazoan parasites. Of the total specimens collected, 32.0% were found to be naturally infected with hemiurid trematodes. The prevalence of parasitic infections increased to 48.0% during winter and fell to 16.0% during summer season with no mixed infections being observed. Two species of the hemiurid trematodes were recovered from the stomach of the infected fish samples; both belonged to the genus, Lecithocladium , in the family Hemiuridae. The morphometrics of their different body parts were characterized by light microscopy. Comparisons between the recovered parasites and previously studied species showed that the present investigation is the first report of Lecithocladium species infecting marine fish in the Red Sea. Additionally, molecular analysis of the parasites' 18S small subunit (SSu) rDNA was performed to determine their phylogenetic position in relation to previously recorded species in GenBank, which distinctly supported the morphological characteristics identified here. Two hemiurid species from the genus, Lecithocladium , to be L. cristatum and L. parviovum , were identified. Comparison of 18S rDNA sequences revealed that they had 98.0% sequence identity with L. excisum (gb| AJ287529) with a low divergence value. On the basis of these results, the two species isolated here were recorded within a new host and locality records in Egypt. Highlights • This is the first report of genus Lecithocladium to infect the greater marine lizardfish S. tumbil inhabiting the Red Sea. • This study contributes to knowledge on the biodiversity of hemiurids in the Red Sea and identifies the role of S. tumbil as a definitive host. • Additionally, the new genetic sequences have helped to identify the ancestral marine origin of the present Lecithocladium species. Dinosoma singhi, new species has been described from the stomach of a marine fishes, Lepturacanthussavala (Ribbon fish) Cuv. 2.0 Val, from Pentakota Beach, Bay of Bengal, Puri Coast, Orissa. Abstract

Although some parasitological efforts have focused on the frigate tuna Auxis thazard (Lacepède) (Scombriformes, Scombridae) in Brazil, its digenean fauna remains poorly known. Combining morphological and molecular methods, we investigated the diversity of digenean trematodes of A. thazard collected from the coastal waters off the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 2021. Six species belonging to four families were recorded: the bucephalid Rhipidocotyle cf. angusticolle Chandler, 1941, the didymozoid Didymocystis sp. 6 sensu Louvard et al. (2022), the fellodistomid Tergestia sp., and three hemiurids, Dinurus euthynni Yamaguti, 1934, Lecithochirium floridense (Manter, 1934), and L. synodi Manter, 1931. The current study brings the total number of digenean trematode species parasitising A. thazard in Brazil up to eight, with hemiuroid trematodes being most diverse. Auxis thazard is a new host record for L. floridense, L. synodi and potentially for R. angusticolle. The geographic distribution of several species found in our study appeared to be wider than previously known. Our study is the first to apply a DNA-based approach to digenean diversity in marine fishes in Brazil and we believe that both morphological descriptions and molecular sequence data provided in our study will aid future research assessing the diversity of digenean trematodes of A. thazard and other marine fishes in Brazil.Trématodes Digènes infectant l’auxide Auxis thazard (Scombriformes, Scombridae) au large de la côte de Rio de Janeiro, Brésil, avec des données moléculaires.Bien que certains efforts parasitologiques aient porté sur l’auxide Auxis thazard (Lacepède) (Scombriformes : Scombridae) au Brésil, la faune de ses digènes reste mal connue. Notre étude est la première à appliquer une approche basée sur l’ADN à la diversité des digènes chez les poissons marins au Brésil et nous pensons que les descriptions morphologiques et les données de séquence moléculaire fournies dans notre étude aideront les recherches futures évaluant la diversité des trématodes digènes d’A. thazard et d’autres poissons marins du Brésil.

Os peixes foram medidos, necropsiados e tiveram seus órgãos investigados para o encontro de trematodeos digenéticos, das famílias Hemiuridae e Lecithasteridae, e nematoides das famílias Camallanidae e Cucullanidae. A identificação taxonômica dos parasitos foi baseada nos caracteres morfológicos e morfométricos, usando-se as microscopias de campo claro e eletrônica de varredura. Os trematódeos, Lecithochirium monticellii e Aponurus laguncula, foram encontrados parasitando P. isosceles, P. patagonicus e X. rasile, enquanto os nematoides, Procamallanus (Spirocamallanus) halitrophus e Cucullanus bonaerensis, foram encontrados parasitando P. isosceles e X. rasile e P. isosceles, P. patagonicus e X. rasile, respectivamente. Os índices parasitários de prevalência, intensidade média, abundância média e amplitude de variação da intensidade de infeção, bem como os sítios de infecção foram avaliados para cada espécie de parasito. Este é o primeiro registro de P. patagonicus por L. monticellii; X. rasile por A. laguncula e P. (S.) halitrophus; e de P. isosceles e P. patagonicus por C. bonaerensis no Oceano Atlântico Sul Ocidental.

Abstract

The mature spermatozoon of Hemiurus appendiculatus exhibits the general pattern described in most of the digenean namely, two axonemes of the 9 + “1” pattern of the Trepaxonemata, a nucleus, a filiform mitochondrion, external ornamentations of the plasma membrane and parallel cortical microtubules located on one side of the spermatozoon. In this study, we show for the second time in a digenean spermatozoon the presence of microtubules of the second axoneme associated each in a short length with an external ornamentation, seven cortical microtubules, a terminal bulge in the anterior spermatozoon extremity separate from the remainder of the spermatozoon by a transverse constriction and the simultaneous presence of the external ornamentation of the plasma membrane with a filamentous ornamentation. The external ornamentations have a differentiated distribution, cover almost the anterior region of the spermatozoon, are more abundant around the first axoneme and extend backwards over a short distance around the second axoneme. This study also allowed us to reveal for the first time the existence in the Hemiuroidea of an axoneme that begins to disrupt before reaching the front end of the mitochondrion. Abstract

Sixty specimens of the moontail bullseye Priacanthus hamrur were collected at Coasts of Suez Gulf, Red Sea (Egypt) during the four different seasons of the whole year 2014 and necropsied to study the infection with metazoan parasites. Twenty-one out of 60 examined fish specimens (infection rate of 33.33 %) were found to be naturally infected by the hemiurid digenean parasite Lecithochirium priacanthi. The large-sized fish reaching 15-30 (23.5 ± 4.8) cm were more intensively infected than the smaller ones. A definite seasonal effect was observed as winter was found to be the season of severe parasitic infections, while midsummer was the lowest one. The morphological and morphometric characterization of this parasite were examined by light and scanning electron microscopy. The adult worms had an elongated body measuring 1.93-2.54 (2.11 ± 0.20) mm in length and 0.61-0.72 (0.67 ± 0.02) mm in width. The body was characterized by the presence of a sub-terminal oral sucker with diameters reaching 0.12-0.16 (0.14 ± 0.02) mm. The ventral sucker measured 0.32-0.45 (0.38 ± 0.02) mm in diameter. The body was supplied by a short retracted portion with a blunt end that measured 0.48-0.61 (0.56 ± 0.02) mm in length and 0.28-0.35 (0.32 ± 0.02) mm in width. Morphological results of the present parasite were compared with other related species described previously from Perciformes. Molecular characterization based on small subunit ribosomal DNA was done to confirm the obtained morphological and morphometric results. A preliminary genetic comparison between SSU rDNA of this parasite and other species of Hemiuridae places the present specimen as a putative sister taxon to Lecithochirium grandiporum and Lecithochirium caesionis. The finding of L. priacanthi in Egyptian marine water fish represents a new geographical record for this parasite. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Abstract: Trichiurus lepturus (Actinopterygii, Perciformes) is a commercially and economically important fish. A total of 60 specimens of this cutlassfish were collected of the coast the municipalities of Niterói and Cabo Frio, state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The fish were measured, necropsied, filleted and had their organs investigated for digenetic trematodes. Taxonomic identification was based on morphological and morphometric characters. The specimens of T. lepturus were parasitized with adult specimens of Lecithochirium monticellii. Parasite indices of prevalence, intensity, mean intensity, abundance, mean abundance, range of infection, and site of infection of parasitic species were evaluated. Notes on the taxonomy of the parasite were also included. This is the first report of L. monticellii parasitizing T. lepturus in Brazil.

Abstract

This study provides the first ultrastructural data of spermatozoa in the genus Lecithochirium. The spermatozoa of L. microstomum (from Trichiurus lepturus in Senegal) and L. musculus (from Anguilla anguilla in Corsica) exhibit the general pattern described in the great majority of the Digenea, namely two axonemes with the 9 + “1” pattern typical of the Trepaxonemata, one mitochondrion, a nucleus, parallel cortical microtubules and external ornamentation of the plasma membrane. Spermatozoa of L. microstomum and L. musculus have some specific features such as the presence of a reduced number of cortical microtubules arranged on only one side of the spermatozoon, the lack of spine-like bodies and expansion of the plasma membrane. The external ornamentation of the plasma membrane entirely covers the anterior extremity of the spermatozoa. The ultrastructure of the posterior extremity of the spermatozoa corresponds to the pattern previously described in the Hemiuridae, characterized by only singlets of the second axoneme. A particularity of these spermatozoa is the organization of the microtubule doublets of the second axoneme around the nucleus in the posterior part of the spermatozoon.

Abstract

The second part of the catalogue of type material deposited in the Helminthological Collection of the Oswaldo Cruz Institute/ FIOCRUZ (CHIOC), between 1979 and 2016, is presented, to complement the first list of all types that was published in 1979. This part includes Platyhelminthes other than monogenoids, which were covered in the first part published in September 2016. The present catalogue comprises type material for 104 species, distributed across three classes, 40 families and 75 genera. Species names are listed systematically, followed by type host, infection site, type locality and specimens with their collection numbers and references. The classification and the nomenclature of the species have been updated.

Abstract

Five species of helminth endoparasite (two digeneans, Brachyphallus crenatus (Rudolphi, 1802) and Lecithaster gibbosus (Rudolphi, 1802); two cestodes, plerocercoids of Nybelinia surmenicola (Okada in Dollfus, 1929) and a tetraphyllidean; and an acanthocephalan, post-cystacanths of Bolbosoma sp.) were found in adults of Arctic lampreys Lethenteron camtschaticum (Tilesius, 1811) arriving in the lower part of the middle reaches of a river in Hokkaido, Japan, for spawning after a period of growth in the sea. These parasites are all common species previously reported from various marine fishes in the North Pacific and all have complex life-cycles involving host-to-host transmission via a predator-prey relationship. To have become infected with these food-borne parasites, Arctic lampreys need to have ingested various body parts of infected prey fishes at sea. Consequently, the endoparasites recovered suggest that the Arctic lamprey has a role as a predator in marine ecosystems.

Abstract

International audience; This study provides the first ultrastructural data of spermatozoa in the genus Lecithochirium. The spermatozoa of L. microstomum (from Trichiurus lepturus in Senegal) and L. musculus (from Anguilla anguilla in Corsica) exhibit the general pattern described in the great majority of the Digenea, namely two axonemes with the 9 + "1" pattern typical of the Trepaxonemata, one mitochondrion, a nucleus, parallel cortical microtubules and external ornamentation of the plasma membrane. Spermatozoa of L. microstomum and L. musculus have some specific features such as the presence of a reduced number of cortical microtubules arranged on only one side of the spermatozoon, the lack of spine-like bodies and expansion of the plasma membrane. The external ornamentation of the plasma membrane entirely covers the anterior extremity of the spermatozoa. The ultrastructure of the posterior extremity of the spermatozoa corresponds to the pattern previously described in the Hemiuridae, characterized by only singlets of the second axoneme. A particularity of these spermatozoa is the organization of the microtubule doublets of the second axoneme around the nucleus in the posterior part of the spermatozoon.

Abstract

Using available records, unpublished information retrieved from the Helminthological Collection of the Oswaldo Cruz Institute (CHIOC) and published reports, a checklist of the recorded helminth parasites of endangered vertebrates from Brazil was generated. A total of 772 records and 186 helminth species (6 Acanthocephala, 83 Nematoda, 23 Cestoda, 64 Trematoda, 10 Monogenea) in 76 host species (7 Actinopterygii, 8 Chondrichthyes, 1 Amphibia, 10 Reptilia, 22 Aves, 28 Mammalia) from Brazil were listed in the present work, including 39 undetermined helminth species and 10 new host records. This is the first compilation of the helminth parasites of threatened vertebrates in Brazil and in the Neotropics.

Parahemiurus merus é um hemiurideo amplamente distribuído e que normalmente infecta peixes pelágicos de regiões temperadas. Há alguns registros deste parasito em quetognatos. Seu ciclo de vida não é conhecido. Neste estudo metacercárias progenéticas de P. merus encontradas parasitando Parasagitta friderici da baia de Paranaguá (Brasil) são descritas. A prevalência desta parasitose foi de 86.8%, intensidade de infecção variando de 1 a 11, média de 2,26 e abundância média de 1,96 (n=190). Medidas e descrição de alguns espécimes de P.merus parasitas de P. friderici são apresentadas. Ovos livres, alguns eclodindo e liberando miracidio foram encontrados na cavidade do corpo dos hospedeiros. Os índices parasitológicos são os mais elevados já reportados na relação entre Hemiuridae e Chaetognata. Este é o primeiro registro de metacercárias progenéticas em P. merus infectando quetognatas no Brasil. Parahemiurus merus is a hemiurid widely dispersed and its life cycle is unknown. However, this species usually infects temperate pelagic fishes and chaetognaths. In this study, description and measurements of P. merus progenetic metacercariae found parasitizing Parasagitta friderici from Paranaguá Bay (Brazil) are presented. The prevalence was 86.8%, intensity of infection varied from 1 to 11, mean 2.26 and, mean abundance was 1.96 (n=190). In addition, some hosts were highly infected and the parasites released eggs inside its body cavity. These eggs were able to hatch inside the chaetognath. This is the first record of P. merus progenetic metacercariae infecting chaetognaths in Brazil.

Parahemiurus merus é um hemiurideo amplamente distribuído e que normalmente infecta peixes pelágicos de regiões temperadas. Há alguns registros deste parasito em quetognatos. Seu ciclo de vida não é conhecido. Neste estudo metacercárias progenéticas de P. merus encontradas parasitando Parasagitta friderici da baia de Paranaguá (Brasil) são descritas. A prevalência desta parasitose foi de 86.8%, intensidade de infecção variando de 1 a 11, média de 2,26 e abundância média de 1,96 (n=190). Medidas e descrição de alguns espécimes de P.merus parasitas de P. friderici são apresentadas. Ovos livres, alguns eclodindo e liberando miracidio foram encontrados na cavidade do corpo dos hospedeiros. Os índices parasitológicos são os mais elevados já reportados na relação entre Hemiuridae e Chaetognata. Este é o primeiro registro de metacercárias progenéticas em P. merus infectando quetognatas no Brasil. Parahemiurus merus is a hemiurid widely dispersed and its life cycle is unknown. However, this species usually infects temperate pelagic fishes and chaetognaths. In this study, description and measurements of P. merus progenetic metacercariae found parasitizing Parasagitta friderici from Paranaguá Bay (Brazil) are presented. The prevalence was 86.8%, intensity of infection varied from 1 to 11, mean 2.26 and, mean abundance was 1.96 (n=190). In addition, some hosts were highly infected and the parasites released eggs inside its body cavity. These eggs were able to hatch inside the chaetognath. This is the first record of P. merus progenetic metacercariae infecting chaetognaths in Brazil.

Abstract

Aphanurus stossichii ( Monticelli, 1891) is redescribed from Boops boops ( L.) from various localities in the NE Atlantic region ( off Spain), the Mediterranean ( off Spain and Turkey) and the Black Sea ( off Bulgaria). The material from the Atlantic coast of Spain showed differences in egg-size and shape and a characteristic ornamentation of the anterior third of the hermaphroditic duct. A comparison with samples from B. boops collected off Antalya ( Turkey) and off the Bulgarian Black Sea coast revealed a considerable size variation and confirmed the presence of tubercles in the terminal part of the hermaphroditic duct. A. virgula Looss, 1907, previously considered a synonym of A. stossichii, is redescribed on the basis of voucher material from Engraulis encrasicolus ponticus Alexandrov collected off the Bulgarian Black Sea coast and previously identifed as A. stossichii. A. virgula can be distinguished from A. stossichii by its smaller size and substantially lower range limits for all metrical features, the more posterior position of the base of sinus-sac, and the eggs being less numerous and larger in relation to the size of the body and gonads.
