Big data analytics capabilities have the potential to help healthcare organizations improve performance and provide high-quality care, and this awareness is growing. However, implementing BDA to optimize healthcare performance is a fundamental challenge for researchers and practitioners alike. This study investigates how big data analytics capabilities can predict the performance of healthcare organizations through five broad categories of BDA capabilities (organizational, technical, analytical, cognitive, and social) with their subcompetencies to improve decision-making and reshape the future of healthcare transmission. These thematic categories were used to develop a prediction model to predict healthcare organization performance accurately. We collect 205 responses from big data analysts and those who work in the hospital's information technology departments through a survey, preprocessing the data, then we use the machine learning and neural networks algorithms to develop and evaluate the model. Insights into the relationship between big data analytics competencies are provided by the results of predictive modelling. The results of the proposed model were good for all capabilities. the model's accuracy at a range 77.6% to 85.4% for all capabilities, these results show that the model has strong and consistent performance, and make it a trustworthy instrument for decision-making in the healthcare industry. The SmartEUS project aims to design, develop, and test a highly innovative model for the provision of Emergency Urgency Services (EUS) based on the concept of clinical pathway (i.e., the entire emergency care chain). The project is innovative both from an organizational and technological point of view. It is based on an e-Health approach, capable of exploiting new digital technologies in a coordinated way to support the evolution of emergency health systems towards dynamic and safer processes. The paper presents the SmartEUS platform which can integrate the information from all the key players in medical emergency response (emergency operation center, emergency medical service, hospital emergency department) improving their coordination. The most relevant innovations of the proposed solution are data integration and interoperability, advanced communication and collaboration, knowledge-based resource allocation, telemedicine integration to support decision making in dispatching and resource assignment. In fact, a Decision Support System is integrated into SmartEUS cloud platform to suggest to the emergency operation center which emergency medical service and hospital emergency department. In fact, information on the patient status can include results from ambulance's on board telediagnosis equipment, alerting the hospital emergency department even before the arrive of the patient, thus guaranteeing the appropriateness of care according to patient needs (e.g., patient pre-triage index, potential pre-hospital diagnosis) and reducing emergency department overcrowding and resources saturation. Sustainable healthcare means providing affordable, quality medical care without causing undue environmental damage, which is critical for a world just emerging from a debilitating pandemic. This article contends that it is now an opportune time to map the existing knowledge to guide future sustainability research in healthcare. Therefore, this article aims to systematically review and comprehensively analyse the extant literature on sustainability practices in healthcare organizations and propose future research directions based on gaps in the literature. A corpus of 79 articles sourced from five databases and published between 1995 and 2022 was identified for an in‐depth review. Following a framework‐based systematic literature review, this article offers an organized, retrospective view of the performance using antecedents, decisions, and outcomes (ADO) and Theories–Contexts–Methods (TCM) integrated framework. These frameworks are used to evaluate and understand sustainability practices in the healthcare sector. Additionally, the article shows the thematic evolution of sustainability research in healthcare with the help of five clusters. While the systematic literature review results highlight the large theoretical base, it also reveals the lack of consensus on defining sustainability. The analysis of 79 articles yielded six valuable categories of antecedents with 27 constructs, five categories of decisions with 11 constructs, and two categories of outcomes with 15 constructs. Results also reveal a lack of consensus regarding the influence of sustainability practices on organizational performance across the three sustainability pillars (social, environmental, and economic dimensions). The present review has implications for healthcare service delivery systems and policymakers to help them redesign their services to promote sustainable development goals. Before concluding the article, knowledge gaps and future research directions are structured using the ADO‐TCM framework through pertinent ideas for sustainability research in healthcare organizations. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic in Jordan has brought terrifying effects on hospital management performance worldwide. The ultimate purpose is to generate empirical knowledge and open research opportunities into future studies. Investigating critical resourcebased factors would significantly contribute to the growing body of knowledge that informs policies and programs for mitigating the negative effects of the pandemic on the administration of Jordan's healthcare sector. To this end, we surveyed a sample of 418 managers in the Jordanian health sector. To produce numeric data and to test the hypotheses, the researchers employed structural equation modeling, specifically using the PLS-SEM technique. This study argues that the COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound negative impact on hospital performance in Jordan. Telemedicine, innovation, and infrastructure exhibit a significant and positive direct influence on management performance. As a result, this study accepts two hypotheses pertaining to the moderating influence of telemedicine and infrastructure in mitigating the negative consequences of COVID-19 on performance. However, the hypothesis related to the moderating role of innovation in the impact of COVID-19 on performance is rejected. The pandemic has presented unprecedented challenges to the healthcare sector, necessitating the development of effective management strategies to address the surge in patient volume and resource constraints. Telemedicine and healthcare infrastructure have been identified as critical resources with a significant moderating effect on healthcare management performance during this crisis. This comment draws on the study by Rotulo et al about the effects of fiscal decentralization on access, utilization and availability of healthcare resources across Italian regions. We start by discussing the recent trends in health system decentralization worldwide, and then reflect on the rationale and main benefits and the key complexities and challenges of this much debated reform. We address these issues with reference to the recent experience of Italy as well as that of other comparable highly decentralized countries, most notably Spain, paying particular attention to their similarities and contrasts. We conclude that decentralization of health services poses complex challenges and trade-offs which may require careful design of equalisation mechanisms, framework regulation and efficient coordination mechanisms by central and sub central governments.

With the increase in allied health professional (AHP) research activity, it is imperative for healthcare organisations, clinicians, managers, and leaders to understand research engagement specifically within allied health fields. This systematic review aims to examine the value of research engagement by allied health professionals and organisations on healthcare performance. Methods This systematic review had a two-stage search strategy. Firstly, the papers from a previous systematic review examining the effect of research engagement in healthcare were screened to identify papers published pre-2012. Secondly, a multi-database search was used to conduct a re-focused update of the previous review, focusing specifically on allied health to identify publications from 2012–2021. Studies which examined the value of allied health research engagement on healthcare performance were included. All stages of the review were conducted by two reviewers independently. Each study was assessed using the appropriate Joanna Briggs Institute critical appraisal tool. A narrative synthesis was completed to analyse the similarities and differences between and within the different study types. Results Twenty-two studies were included, comprising of mixed research designs, of which six were ranked as high importance. The findings indicated that AHP research engagement appears related to positive findings in improvements to processes of care. The review also identified the most common mechanisms which may link research engagement with these improvements. Discussion This landmark systematic review and narrative synthesis suggests value in AHP research engagement in terms of both processes of care and more tentatively, of healthcare outcomes. While caution is required because of the lack of robust research studies, overall the findings support the agenda for growing AHP research. Recommendations are made to improve transparent reporting of AHP research engagement and to contribute essential evidence of the value of AHP research engagement. Abstract Background The COVID-19 pandemic has shaken everyday life causing morbidity and mortality across the globe. While each country has been hit by the pandemic, individual countries have had different infection and health trajectories. Of all welfare state institutions, healthcare has faced the most immense pressure due to the pandemic and hence, we take a comparative perspective to study COVID-19 related health system performance. We study the way in which health system characteristics were associated with COVID-19 excess mortality and case fatality rates before Omicron variant. Methods This study analyses the health system performance during the pandemic in 43 OECD countries and selected non-member economies through three healthcare systems dimensions: (1) healthcare finance, (2) healthcare provision, (3) healthcare performance and health outcomes. Health system characteristics-related data is collected from the Global Health Observatory data repository, the COVID-19 related health outcome indicators from the Our World in Data statistics database, and the country characteristics from the World Bank Open Data and the OECD statistics databases. Results We find that the COVID-19 excess mortality and case fatality rates were systematically associated with healthcare system financing and organizational structures, as well as performance regarding other health outcomes besides COVID-19 health outcomes. Conclusion Investments in public health systems in terms of overall financing, health workforce and facilities are instrumental in reducing COVID-19 related mortality. Countries aiming at improving their pandemic preparedness may develop health systems by strengthening their public health systems.

The purpose of this study is to explore how machine learning technologies can improve healthcare operations management. A machine learning-based model to solve a specific medical problem is developed to achieve this research purpose. Specifically, this study presents an AI solution for malaria infection diagnosis by applying the CNN (convolutional neural network) algorithm. Based on malaria microscopy image data from the NIH National Library of Medicine, a total of 24,958 images were used for deep learning training, and 2600 images were selected for final testing of the proposed diagnostic architecture. The empirical results indicate that the CNN diagnostic model correctly classified most malaria-infected and non-infected cases with minimal misclassification, with performance metrics of precision (0.97), recall (0.99), and f1-score (0.98) for uninfected cells, and precision (0.99), recall (0.97), and f1-score (0.98) for parasite cells. The CNN diagnostic solution rapidly processed a large number of cases with a high reliable accuracy of 97.81%. The performance of this CNN model was further validated through the k-fold cross-validation test. These results suggest the advantage of machine learning-based diagnostic methods over conventional manual diagnostic methods in improving healthcare operational capabilities in terms of diagnostic quality, processing costs, lead time, and productivity. In addition, a machine learning diagnosis system is more likely to enhance the financial profitability of healthcare operations by reducing the risk of unnecessary medical disputes related to diagnostic errors. As an extension for future research, propositions with a research framework are presented to examine the impacts of machine learning on healthcare operations management for safety and quality of life in global communities. Citizens' attitudes towards their national healthcare are important indicators of satisfaction and of political perspectives. In this article we summarise individual and national level patterns in healthcare evaluations across Europe. An innovative feature of our analysis is that we demonstrate that assessing healthcare evaluations in relative terms (relative to citizens' views about the performance of national institutions in other domains), offers new insights about individual and national level variations in attitudes. Thus, we introduce an indicator of relative attitudes towards healthcare and contrast it to an absolute measure in a cross-national analysis. We use a larger dataset than previous studies of healthcare evaluations including countries from all regions of Europe and spanning eight rounds of the European Social Survey (2002–2017, N = 342,000). We find that Europeans' healthcare evaluations are multidimensional, with different patterns sometimes operating at an absolute and a relative level. When comparing countries, for instance, several nations in Southern and Eastern Europe compare poorly to other nations in their absolute ratings of healthcare but compare favourably if assessed in relative terms. Likewise, using a relative measure, most Scandinavian countries compare less favourably to other countries, but score positively when evaluations are measured in absolute terms. With the increase in allied health clinical academic and research activity, it is imperative for healthcare organizations, leaders and managers to understand engagement in research within these specific clinical fields. This systematic review aims to identify the effect of engagement in research by allied health professionals (AHPs) and organizations on healthcare performance. Methods: This systematic review has a two‐stage search strategy. The first stage will be to screen a previous systematic review examining the effectiveness of engagement in research in health and social care to identify relevant papers published pre‐2012. The search strategy used in the previous review will then be rerun, but with a specific focus on allied health. This multi‐database search will identify publications from 2012 to date. Only studies that assessed the effectiveness of allied health engagement in research will be included. All stages of the review will be conducted by two reviewers independently, plus documented discussions with the wider research team when discrepancies occur. This systematic review protocol follows the EQUATOR reporting guidelines of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta‐Analyses for Protocols (PRISMA‐P). Discussion: The findings of this review will make a significant contribution to the evidence base around the effect of allied health engagement in research on healthcare performance. It will provide insights for clinicians and managers looking to understand the consequences of developing AHP research capability and capacity. The findings of this review will also aim to make recommendations for future evaluation approaches for engagement in research interventions. This study examines the moderation role of innovation and infrastructure on the relationship between covid-19 crisis and healthcare performance in Jordan. The methodology of this study includes a literature review to identify relevant studies and theories related to the topic and identify gaps in the existing research. The number of people in need of healthcare is increasing over time despite the limited resources available in each country; hence, access to healthcare, quality of healthcare, and cost of healthcare remain contemporary global issues. The limitations of travel and access to healthcare during the global pandemic (COVID-19) have triggered the further search for improved and sustainable healthcare services through technology innovation and digital transformation in the healthcare sector. This study examines the impact of technology innovation on healthcare performance among 241 healthcare organizations in Saudi Arabia. The study utilizes the structural equation model (SEM) method to unravel the nature of technology innovation and its influence on healthcare performance. The results of SEM reveal that innovation efforts, in terms of R&D, training, and the acquisition of new software and acquisition of new medical machinery/equipment, have a significant influence on technology innovation and healthcare performance. Furthermore, the results further indicate that technology innovations measured by mobile technology, digitalization of health records, telehealth/telemedicine and artificial intelligence have great likelihood and significant influence on healthcare performance among the healthcare organizations surveyed. This implies that continuous innovative efforts and spending on various technology innovations would further improve the efficiency and quality of healthcare service which give a competitive advantage to healthcare organizations in Saudi Arabia. Abstract Background Active engagement in research by healthcare organisations and clinicians is associated with improvements in healthcare performance. Barriers to research engagement by clinician allied health (AH) professionals include competing priorities from high clinical workloads, lack of research skills and confidence, and lack of supportive research relationships. Collaboration with universities on joint clinical research projects is well recognised as a means of building health service research capacity. Research projects undertaken by students as part of their qualifying degree represent one such opportunity. However, there are few reports evaluating these collaborations from the health service perspective. Methods A qualitative study using semi-structured interviews and thematic analysis to explore the experiences of AH professionals in the co-supervision of students completing research placements as part of their professional degree course. Results Fourteen health service employees from six allied health disciplines described collaborations on research projects with 24 students from four different universities. Student placements and projects varied widely in length of placement, extent of collaboration, supervision structure and study design. Three overarching themes were identified in the AH professional co-supervision experience: 1) Professional growth; 2) Mismatch with expectations; and 3) Focus on the student. Project outcomes were categorised from the health system perspective. These were 1) Healthcare performance improvements, including local increases in staff clinical practice knowledge and wider contributions to the evidence base; 2) Research capacity gains within the health service, including research knowledge and skill development, collaborative linkages and opportunity for future research; and 3) Staff-centred outcomes including increased job satisfaction. Conclusions This study demonstrates the potential for AH professional supervision of students on research placements to contribute to healthcare performance improvements and research capacity gains within health services, alongside providing personal benefits for the AH professionals involved. Early consultation with a health service-employed research specialist may support health professional and student learning, team collaboration and project coordination for these student projects.

Efficient resource allocation in healthcare organizations remains a complex challenge, exacerbated by the intricate data structure and myriad variables involved. While traditional methods like Data Envelopment Analysis have been employed, these often lack the requisite discriminatory power for accurate evaluation. This study introduces the PDA methodology, a fusion of Principal Component Analysis, Data Envelopment Analysis, and Analysis of Variance algorithms, developed in a machine learning environment. To further optimize discriminative power, the Particle Swarm Optimization Algorithm was included. By applying the PDA methodology to hospitals in the Apulia region of Italy, we found that facilities with better perceived quality tend to be more efficient. Furthermore, we identified significant variations in efficiency based on network affiliation and hospital level. Machine learning algorithms, including linear regressions and neural networks, confirmed that our methodology outperforms traditional Data Envelopment Analysis models in precisely distinguishing between varying levels of hospital efficiency. In conclusion, this work provides a fresh perspective for future research and policy decisions in the healthcare domain, demonstrating how the use of advanced and machine learning algorithms can result in more accurate evaluations and targeted interventions. The government's task is to ensure easy access for the public to the health facilities needed. The study aimed at analyzing ecologically the factors related to the accessibility of hospitals in Indonesia. The ecological analysis conducted using secondary data from the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia report in 2018. The study takes all provinces as samples. Apart from households easily accessible to the hospital, five other variables analyzed as independent variables were total population, population density, poverty depth index, poverty severity, and population percentage completing primary education. Data were analyzed using a scatter plot. The study results found that the higher the total population in a province, the higher the percentage of households easily accessible to the hospital in that province. The higher the population density in an area, the higher the percentage of households access to the hospital in that area. On the other hand, the higher the poverty depth index in a region, the lower the percentage of households easily accessible to the hospital in that province. Moreover, the higher the poverty severity index in a region, the lower the percentage of households easily accessible to the hospital in that region. Finally, the higher the percentage of the population completing primary education in a province, the higher the percentage of households easily accessible to the hospital in that province. Healthy organisations have a strong provision of the vital elements required for long-term sustainable success and proponents of organisational health concern themselves with the recognition and measurement of these elements. However, despite many leading companies focussing on organisational health in addition to organisational performance there has been very limited work within the context of healthcare to date. This is the first study to look specifically at the measurement of organisational health within the context of acute sector healthcare organisations. The Healthcare-OH survey was developed in three sequential stages. In the first, a qualitative interview study was used to establish the elements of organisational health within acute sector healthcare organisations. The second stage involved item generation to formulate a draft questionnaire which was then piloted across a sample of healthcare staff and analysed by way of exploratory factor analysis to create the final questionnaire. The third stage comprised a final round of pilot testing with confirmatory factor analysis to confirm data model fit. Abstract Background The increasing cost on healthcare exposes China’s healthcare budgets and system to financial crisis. To control the excessive growth of healthcare expenditure, China’s healthcare reforms emphasize the control of the global budget for healthcare, which leads to the release of relevant policy and a series of cost-control actions implemented by different hospitals. This work aims to identify the effects brought by the cost-control policy and actions via surveying and analysing feedback from clinicians. As well as companies that compete in market, in public health system organizations compete to satisfy customer’s need, and therefore identifying those needs and delivering the value is critical in success. Return to Scale and Damage to Scale are measures. In this study data envelopment analysis is developed to measure the Return to Scale and Damage to Scale in public health organization. Two new assumptions for production possibility set are proposed as Weak Natural Disposability and weak managerial disposability. Then three types of models including efficiency evaluation, Return to Scale determination, and Damage to Scale determination are proposed based on radial and non-radial models. A case study is handled using real data of 33 hospitals in Tehran. Each hospital is assumed as a decision-making unit with 4 inputs, 2 desirable outputs, and 2 undesirable outputs. The proposed approaches are straightforward and applicable for real world problems.

This study examines variations in efficiency among hospitals located in western and southern Ukraine. We estimated efficiency using a nonparemetric modeling technique known as data envelopment analysis (DEA). DEA is a very powerful tool to compare relative efficiency among several economic units of study, known as decision making units (DMUS). In our current and previous research we have focused attention on comparative efficiency among hospitals and then explained variation in efficiency based on historical and cultural differences that influence managerial behavior at the hospital level of decision making. This study using current data and an expanded geographic territory provides further support to our findings from previous studies.

The success of an organization or a particular activity is evaluated through the measurement of key performance indicators (KPIs). The aim of this paper is to analyze and predict the indicators of healthcare performance using grey systems theory. Recent advancements in science and technology have made the healthcare industry extremely efficient at collecting data using electronic claims systems such as electronic health records. Therefore, collecting field level primary data becomes easier and accumulate them to generate secondary data for research purpose and to get an insight of the organization performance is absolutely necessary. Our research analyzes the KPIs of a hospital based on a secondary data source. Since, secondary data contains uncertainty and sometimes poor information, grey prediction model suits best to make a prediction model in this regard. Conventional grey model has considerable drawbacks while making a rigorous prediction model. For this, we apply an improved grey prediction model to predict the KPIs of the healthcare performance indicators. Several error measures in our model give a best fit of the data and allow prediction of the KPIs. The prediction model gives good estimates of the quantitative indicators and produced error rate within an acceptable range. We observe that the KPIs of bed turnover rate (BTR) and bed occupancy rate (BOR) have an increasing trend, whereas the KPIs of average length of stay (ALOS), hospital death rate (HDR) and hospital infection rate (HIR) show a decreasing trend over time. The main contribution of this research is a grey-based prediction model that can provide managers with the information they need to evaluate and predict the performance of a hospital. The research indicates that managers should give greater priority to the indicators which will result in better patients' satisfaction and improved profit margin. Healthcare managers striving towards better performance will now have an empirical basis upon which to formulate and adjust their strategies, after analyzing the predicted value. Association relationships between doctors' opinions and cost-control actions were modelled into network models, and key factors were identified in a multi-variate framework. Last, we visualized our resultant data using a network model, and further multi-variate analysis was performed.Results: There were three main findings. (1) The cost-control policy has been widely implemented in the sampled hospitals in different regions of China, with more than 80% of those surveyed acknowledging that their hospitals take actions of reducing average prescription fees for outpatients, drug costs, and in-hospitalization durations. (2) Most doctors have a negative view of some cost-control actions; this is mainly due to concerns about the effects of these actions on the doctors' own healthcare performance and patient satisfaction. (3) Cost-control actions that had a significant impact on doctors' performance included limiting average prescription fees for outpatients and limiting the use of examinations/drugs/surgeries. Decreased patient satisfaction was associated with fewer admissions of critically ill patients, reduced use of brand-name drugs, and increased total costs to patients due to increased frequencies of visits to the hospitals.Conclusions: Cost-control actions implemented in hospitals in response to the government's policy to reduce its national healthcare budget affect both doctors and patients in several ways. Hospitals today face pressures from a variety of stakeholders to improve performance across a comprehensive scorecard, which has become the basis for value-based purchasing and reimbursement. This study investigates relationships between the effective application of the Malcolm Baldrige Health Care version of the Criteria for Performance Excellence (HCPE) and healthcare organizational performance. There have been many studies on the value of implementing the Criteria for Performance Excellence, but due to the lack of comparable contexts and common performance measures, analysis of the differences in performance between Baldrige Award recipients and nonrecipients has been limited. This study focuses on the common context of health- care organizations in the same geographic region along with common metrics to analyze the impact of effective HCPE application. This study compares 34 Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award Health Care recipients (2002-2011) to 153 competitors in their geographic markets using standard Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) performance measures to determine if there is a relationship between the effective use of the HCPE as an organizational excellence framework and the performance of healthcare organizations. Three categories of performance were explored including the process of care (23 measures), patient experience using the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey (10 measures), and outcome of care (six measures). Process of care and patient experience data included performance from October 2009 through September 2010, and the outcomes of care measures covered performance from July 2007 through June 2010. While there was no significant difference in process of care results or outcomes between Baldrige recipients and their competitors, there was a significant difference in patient experience results. The most important find- ing in this study was that Baldrige recipients provided care equal to or better than competitors while at the same time providing a better patient experience. These results add to the growing evidence that the HCPE are a valid framework to align organizational design, strategy, systems, and human capital to create long-term effectiveness in an institutionalized high-performance culture.
