BACKGROUND: Leukocyte count is a prognostic marker for cardiovascular diseases, with key role in atherosclerosis development. Specific number of neutrophils, lymphocytes and monocytes can predict cardiovascular risk, also in asymptomatic subjects. Among the lipoprotein fractions, HDL-C is a protective factor in the cardiovascular disorders. For the above reason, we have examined the peripheral count of leukocytes, neutrophils, lymphocytes and monocytes, and the ratios between neutrophils/HDL-cholesterol, lymphocytes/HDL-cholesterol, and monocytes/HDL-cholesterol, to evaluate the possible utility of the obtained values in progression of asymptomatic carotid atherosclerosis. METHODS: We performed our analysis in a cohort of 100 subjects with asymptomatic carotid atherosclerosis, of which 43 men and 57 women. The data were expressed as medians and IQR. To analyse the differences in leukocyte, neutrophil, lymphocyte, monocytes count and their ratio with HDL-cholesterol the Mann-Whitney test was employed. RESULTS: The peripheral count of leukocyte subtypes and the ratios, they change in relation to the number of cardiovascular risk factors and the degree of insulin resistance. CONCLUSIONS: In this cohort of subjects, the percentage of observed cardiovascular risk factors significantly affect some leukocyte parameters. (1) Background: Asthma is a syndrome found in both adults and children, characterized by airflow obstruction caused by the inflammation of the airways. In recent years, an increasing number of studies have found that lipid metabolism influences both the development and symptomatology of asthma. Lipid metabolism plays an important role both in the occurrence of exacerbations and in the reduction of lung inflammation. Our study aimed to identify any type of association between patients diagnosed with asthma and their serum lipids, including HDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, total cholesterol, and triglycerides in adults. (2) Methods: To find articles for our review, we searched two platforms: PubMed and Google Scholar. A total of 309 articles from two platforms were analyzed. Finally, 12 papers were selected from the initial pool of identified articles. (3) Results: The positive correlation between triglycerides, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-cholesterol), and asthma has been demonstrated in several studies. Moreover, it appears that there is an association between biomarkers of type 2 inflammation and HDL and serum triglycerides in people with atopic status. Regarding the nutrition of asthmatic patients, the greatest impact on the development of the disease seems to be the consumption of fruit and vegetables. Several studies show that a predominantly vegan diet is associated with better control of the disease and a decrease in the number of pro-inflammatory cytokines. (4) Conclusions: Studies show a positive correlation between total cholesterol, triglyceride, and LDL-cholesterol levels and asthma and a negative correlation between HDL-cholesterol and asthma. Increased cholesterol values would lead to the stimulation of pro-inflammatory processes and the secretion of cytokines involved in these processes. The most successful diets for asthma patients seem to be those in which the consumption of fruit, vegetables, and high-fiber foods is increased because all of these food groups are rich in vitamins, antioxidants, and minerals. Sepsis is the major cause of morbidity and mortality for patients admitted to an intensive care unit worldwide. Currently, procalcitonin (PCT) is a widely used prognostic marker for sepsis. The high cost of estimating Procalcitonin limits its utility in all health facilities. Lipid profile, being a frequently done routine investigation, is studied in sepsis patients to predict the prognosis of sepsis. This study was aimed to assess the association between lipid profile parameters, procalcitonin and clinical outcomes in patients with sepsis.

Dyslipidaemias are major cardiovascular risk factors, especially in people with diabetes. In this area, next-generation therapies targeting circulating lipoparticle metabolism (LDL, VLDL, chylomicrons, HDL) have recently been approved by the European and US medical agencies, including anti- proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin 9 (PCSK9) antibodies; an siRNA targeting PCSK9; bempedoic acid, which targets ATP citrate lyase; an antisense oligonucleotide targeting apolipoprotein C-III; an anti-angiopoietin-like 3 antibody; and a purified omega-3 fatty acid, icosapent ethyl. Other therapies are in different phases of development. There are several important considerations concerning the link between these new lipid-lowering therapies and diabetes. First, since concerns were first raised in 2008 about an increased risk of new-onset diabetes mellitus (NODM) with intensive statin treatment, each new lipid-lowering therapy is being evaluated for its associated risk of NODM, particularly in individuals with prediabetes (impaired fasting glucose and/or impaired glucose tolerance). Second, people with diabetes represent a large proportion of those at high or very high cardiovascular risk in whom these lipid-lowering drugs are currently, or will be, prescribed. Thus, the efficacy of these drugs in subgroups with diabetes should also be closely considered, as well as any potential effects on glycaemic control. In this review, we describe the efficacy of next-generation therapies targeting lipoprotein metabolism in subgroups of people with diabetes and their effects on glycaemic control in individuals with diabetes and prediabetes and in normoglycaemic individuals. HDL-cholesterol quality, including cholesterol distribution in HDL subfractions, is emerging as a key discriminant in dictating the effects of these lipoproteins on cardiovascular health. This study aims at elucidating the relationship between cholesterol distribution in HDL subfractions and CVD risk factors as well as diet quality and energy density in a population of pre- and postmenopausal women. Seventy-two women aged 52 ± 6 years were characterized metabolically and anthropometrically. Serum HDL-C subfractions were quantified using the Lipoprint HDL System. Cholesterol distribution in large HDL subfractions was lower in overweight individuals and study participants with moderate to high estimated CVD risk, hypertension, or insulin resistance. Cholesterol distribution in large, as opposed to small, HDL subfractions correlated negatively with insulin resistance, circulating triglycerides, and visceral adipose tissue (VAT). VAT was an independent positive and negative predictor of cholesterol distribution in large and small HDL subfractions, respectively. Furthermore, an increase in energy intake could predict a decrease in cholesterol levels in large HDL subfractions while lipid intake positively predicted cholesterol levels in small HDL subfractions. Cholesterol distribution in HDL subfractions may represent an additional player in shaping CVD risk and a novel potential mediator of the effect of diet on cardiovascular health. Purpose: The triglyceride-to-high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (TG/HDL-C) ratio is considered an alternative marker for insulin resistance. This longitudinal retrospective study investigated the relationship between TG/HDL-C ratio and the risk of progression to prediabetes. Methods: We investigated 24,604 Japanese participants (14,609 men and 9,995 women) who underwent annual medical health checkups in 2017 (baseline) and 2022. All participants had no diabetes and prediabetes at baseline. No lipid-lowering medications were taken during the follow-up period. Participants were divided into four groups according to the quartiles of TG/HDL-C ratio at baseline. Multivariable-adjusted Cox regression analysis was conducted to examine hazard ratios (HRs) of progression to prediabetes. Receiver operating characteristic curves were used to determine the optimal cutoff value of TG/HDL-C ratio for prediction of prediabetes. Results: Compared with the lowest TG/HDL-C ratio quartile (Q1) group, the adjusted HRs (95% confidence intervals (CI)) of progression to prediabetes in the Q2, Q3, and Q4 groups, respectively, were 1.17 (0.92–1.47), 1.26 (1.01–1.56), and 1.77 (1.41–2.23) for men and 1.07 (0.60–1.11), 1.19 (1.08–1.29), and 1.58 (1.18–2.31) for women. For every 1 unit increase in TG/HDL-C ratio, the adjusted HRs (95% CI) for progression to prediabetes was 1.09 (1.04–1.13) in men and 1.10 (1.04–1.15) in women. The optimal TG/HDL-C ratio cutoffs were 1.71 and 0.97 in men and women, respectively, but the area under the curve was > 0.70 in both sexes. Conclusion: High TG/HDL-C ratio is a risk factor for progression to prediabetes in Japanese men and women, but it had low discriminative ability in predicting prediabetes risk. The aim of this study was to investigate whether skeletal muscle (SM) mass correlates with plasma lipids in metabolic healthy young adults. The study was designed as a retrospective observational monocentric study. Data on plasma lipids and SM mass of subjects attending our institution from 1999 to 2014 were analyzed. Inclusion criteria were being 18–45 years old and in apparently good health. SM mass was evaluated by bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) using the equation proposed by Janssen and normalized to height as skeletal muscle index (SMI: SM mass/height2). The association between SMI and plasma lipids levels was examined using a crude and adjusted linear regression model including age, sex, BMI and waist circumference as additional covariates. The study population consisted of 450 subjects (273 females) without metabolic syndrome (12.2% with normal body weight, 33.1% overweight, and 54.7% with obesity). SMI, total-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, and Triglycerides were higher, whereas HDL-cholesterol was lower in overweight and obese patients as compared with normal weight subjects. SMI was inversely associated with HDL-cholesterol in female patients with obesity but not in male patients with obesity, in normal- or over-weight subjects (p < 0.05). Dyslipidemia is one of the most common disorders worldwide, which, if left untreated, results in a multitude of complications. Thus proper diagnostics, which includes identifying of secondary causes of dyslipidemia is crucial. Endocrine disorders are an important cause of secondary dyslipidemia. This paper aims to review the publications on lipoprotein alterations in endocrine disorders from the past two years and provide an overview of the recent discoveries in this dynamically developing and large field. Significant changes in lipoprotein serum concentrations are present in most endocrinological diseases and can be modified with proper treatment. Some lipoproteins have also been proposed as markers in some endocrine diseases, e.g., thyroid carcinoma. From the scope of endocrine disorders, the largest number of studies explored the lipoprotein changes in polycystic ovary syndrome and in women during the menopausal and peri-menopausal period. Even though the association of thyroid disorders with dyslipidemia is already well studied, new research has delivered some exciting findings about lipoprotein alterations in euthyroid patients with either positive antithyroid peroxidase antibodies or reduced sensitivity to thyroid hormones. The problem of the adverse metabolic profile, including dyslipidemia in hypoprolactinemia has been recognized. Moreover, this review describes other significant discoveries encompassing lipoprotein alterations in disorders of the adrenals, thyroid, parathyroid glands, pituitary, and gonads. The up-to-date knowledge of the influence of endocrine disorders and hormonal changes on serum lipoproteins is prudent as it can significantly impact therapeutic decisions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The objective of the study was to determine if there would be statistically significant differences or trends among apolipoprotein E genotypes (2/2, 2/3, 2/4, 3/3, 3/4, and 4/4) for each member of the cluster of seven associated with type 2 diabetes (T2D). The cluster of seven includes abdominal obesity, hypertension, platelet hyperaggregability, hyperglycemia, dyslipidemia (decreased plasma levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and increased plasma levels of triglycerides)), increased low-density lipoprotein (LDL) oxidation, and increased inflammation.

The association between phytosterols and lipid levels remains poorly assessed at a population level. We assessed the associations between serum levels of six phytosterols (campesterol, campestanol, stigmasterol, sitosterol, sitostanol and brassicasterol) and of lipids [total, low-density lipoprotein (LDL)- and high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol, triglycerides, apolipopoprotein A-IV and lipoprotein Lp(a)] in two cross-sectional surveys of a population-based, prospective study. Data from 910 participants (59.1% women, 70.4 ± 4.7 years) for the first survey (2009–2012) and from 721 participants (60.2% women, 75.1 ± 4.7 years) for the second survey (2014–2017) were used. After multivariable adjustment, all phytosterols were positively associated with total cholesterol: slope and (95% confidence interval) 1.594 (1.273–1.915); 0.073 (0.058–0.088); 0.060 (0.044–0.076); 2.333 (1.836–2.830); 0.049 (0.033–0.064) and 0.022 (0.017–0.028) for campesterol, campestanol, stigmasterol, sitosterol, sitostanol and brassicasterol, respectively, in the first survey, and 1.257 (0.965–1.548); 0.066 (0.052–0.079); 0.049 (0.034–0.063); 1.834 (1.382–2.285); 0.043 (0.029–0.057) and 0.018 (0.012–0.023) in the second survey, all p < 0.05. Similar positive associations were found between all phytosterols and LDL cholesterol. Positive associations were found between campesterol and sitosterol and HDL-cholesterol: slope and (95% CI) 0.269 (0.134–0.405) and 0.393 (0.184–0.602) for campesterol and sitosterol, respectively, in the first survey, and 1.301 (0.999–1.604) and 0.588 (0.327–0.849) in the second survey, all p < 0.05. No associations were found between phytosterols and triglyceride or lipoprotein Lp(a) levels, while a positive association between campesterol and apolipoprotein A-IV levels was found: 2.138 (0.454–3.822). Upon normal dietary intakes, serum phytosterol levels were positively associated with total and LDL cholesterol levels, while no consistent association with other lipid markers was found. The objective of our study was to explore the potential benefits of combining moderate alcohol consumption with regular vigorous physical activity on HDL-cholesterol levels and its potential positive impact on cardiovascular health. Materials and methods: The study comprised two groups: group A (102 patients) that consumed 10 grams of alcohol per day, specifically red wine, and increased their exercise levels in addition to their standard medical treatment, and group B (108 patients) which adhered only to their standard medical treatment. The patients were monitored for a year, during which various clinical parameters were observed. Results: Our study showed that moderate alcohol consumption, particularly red wine, along with increased physical activity levels, were associated with enhancements in exercise tolerance and elevated levels of HDL-cholesterol. Our findings suggest the efficacy of the intervention in improving lipid profiles, with the group that consumed alcohol as part of their treatment scheme, generally experiencing more pronounced positive effects. Statistically significant differences between groups in terms of angina evolution, acute myocardial infarction (AMI) recurrence, or arrhythmias evolution were not found. However, there were important differences in terms of ejection fraction (EF) improvement and quality of life, with the alcohol consuming group displaying greater improvements in both aspects. Conclusions: In conclusion, our study emphasizes the potential benefits of combining moderate alcohol consumption, specifically red wine, with increased physical activity levels for improving exercise tolerance and enhancing HDL-cholesterol levels. However, further research and clinical trials are essential to fully understand the mechanisms and optimize the integration of these lifestyle elements for improved cardiovascular health outcomes. To evaluate the relationship between HDL-Cholesterol (HDL-C), hypertension, and left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) in a large sample of Caucasian youths with overweight/obesity (OW/OB). A cross-sectional multicenter study was performed in 1469 youths (age 6–16 years) with OW/OB observed in the period 2016–2020. An additional independent sample of 244 youths with an echocardiographic evaluation, observed in a single center was analyzed. The sample was divided in six quantiles (Q) of HDL-C: Q1: >56, Q2: ≤56 > 51, Q3: ≤51 > 45, Q4: ≤45 > 41, Q5: ≤41 > 39, Q6: <39 mg/dL. The nadir of the relationship was identified in youths in the first quantile. Among HDL-Cholesterol quantiles the distribution of hypertension was non-linear with a percentage of 25.0%, 40.1%, 33.6%, 31.3%, 35.2% and 39.7% in the six quantiles, respectively. The percentage of LVH was 21.8%, 43.6%, 48.8%, 35.5%, 38.5% and 52.0% in the six quantiles, respectively. The highest odds [95%Cl] of hypertension were 2.05 (1.33–3.16) (P < 0.01) in Q2, 1.67 (1.10–2.55) (P < 0.05) in Q3 and 1.59 (1.05–2.41) (P < 0.05) in Q6 vs Q1. The odds of LVH were 3.86 (1.15–10.24) (P < 0.05) in Q2, 4.16 (1.58–10.91) (P < 0.05) in Q3 and 3.60 (1.44–9.02) (P < 0.05) in Q6 vs Q1, independently by centers, age, sex, prepubertal stage, and body mass index. Background: A high Triglycerides/High Density Lipoprotein-Cholesterol (TG/HDL-C) ratio was considered a cardiovascular disease and mortality risk factor. Aim: to assess the use TG/HDL-C ratio as potential new measure of atherosclerosis in ACS. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 200 ACS patients subjected to clinical &laboratory assessment, (CK-MB), high-sensitive troponin, lipogram, (eGFR), (ECG) & Echocardiography. TGs /HDL-C ratio will be calculated. Results: This study included 200 patients separated into 3 groups: (Group A: n= 24 patients with unstable angina; Group B: n=124 patients with STEMI and Group C: n= 52 patients with NSTEMI). Regarding the mean TG/HDL-C ratio, was 4.44± 3.26. Most cases (85.5%) had high ratio. There is nonsignificant differences between 3 groups regarding TG /HDL-c ratio (p>0.05). Conclusion: There was a strong correlation between high TG /HDL-c ratio & the pattern of ACS. Therefore, TG to HDL-C ratio may be used as a biomarker of atherosclerosis in ACS patients. Background: Elevated high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-cholesterol) levels have been linked to unfavorable outcomes in various clinical settings, but the association with thyroid nodules remains unclear. We aimed to analyze the correlation between elevated HDL-cholesterol and the presence of thyroid nodules along with certain demographic and clinical findings. Methods: In this retrospective study, the patients were divided into three groups based on their body mass index (BMI): <25, 25–29, and >30 and evaluated. Data of 677 patients aged between 15 and 95 years (52.6 ± 15.6) were evaluated. The entire study population comprised 516 females (76.2%). Results: Thyroid nodules (67.1%) and left ventricle diastolic dysfunction (LVDD) (58.1%) were the two most frequent findings in the overall cohort. In the multivariate regression model, BMI, heart rate, and HDL-cholesterol values were significant and independent predictors (p = 0.000 for all) of the presence of thyroid nodules. The presence of thyroid nodules is higher in females, particularly within the higher BMI groups [odds ratio (OR) = 1.048 (CI = 1.02–1.08) for BMI < 25, p = 0.003; OR = 1.094 (CI = 1.05–1.14) for BMI 25–29, p = 0.000; OR = 1.115 (CI = 1.05–1.19) for BMI ≥ 30]. This higher incidence is not observed in males. Conclusion: While the precise mechanisms underlying this association are yet to be fully elucidated, elevated HDL-cholesterol may serve as an indicator of thyroid nodules rather than a marker of cardiovascular protection. Inflammation and oxidative stress play a significant role in the pathogenesis of acute myeloid leukemia. While myeloperoxidase carries pro-oxidant effects, HDL-cholesterol and paraoxonase have antioxidant properties. Therefore, we evaluated serum paraoxonase, myeloperoxidase, and HDL-cholesterol levels in cases with acute myeloid leukemia. Myeloperoxidase, paraoxonase, and HDL-cholesterol levels in 40 acute myeloid leukemia patients and 18 healthy individuals were determined. The relationship between these parameters and other prognostic factors, as well as their association with response to chemotherapy, was investigated. Myeloperoxidase levels were higher, while paraoxonase and HDL-cholesterol levels were lower in acute myeloid leukemia cases compared to the control group (p < 0.001, p < 0.001, p = 0.006, respectively). The myeloperoxidase level was significantly negatively correlated with paraoxonase and HDL-c levels (r = − 0.64, p < 0.001; r = − 0.27, p = 0.02, respectively). Paraoxonase level was positively correlated with HDL level (r = 0.34, p = 0.04). Lactate dehydrogenase level was negatively correlated with HDL-c and paraoxonase levels and positively correlated with myeloperoxidase level (r = − 0.37, p = 0.019; r = − 0.35, p = 0.04; r = 0.45, p = 0.03, respectively). Following complete remission induction treatment, cases with complete remission had lower myeloperoxidase levels and higher HDL-cholesterol and paraoxonase levels compared to other cases (p = 0.03, p = 0.01, p = 0.04, respectively). Myeloperoxidase levels are higher, while paraoxonase and HDL-cholesterol levels are lower in acute myeloid leukemia cases. The obtained findings emphasize the potential importance of inflammation and oxidative stress in the pathogenesis of acute myeloid leukemia. Body weight reduction is often used for addressing lifestyle-related diseases, and for slimming down or improving the competitiveness of athletes. It is known that high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C) levels can be increased by habitual exercise, while low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C) levels may not always be decreased by dietary restriction or exercise. We hypothesized that the levels of not only HDL-C, but also LDL-C improve more with body weight reduction by a combined diet-and-exercise regimen than that by a diet-only regimen. Six healthy young adult male volunteers participated in two 10-day crossover experiments (20 days total). The first 5 days comprised an adjustment period (energy intake, 2521 ± 304 kcal/day (mean ± standard deviation)). During the second 5-day period, participants either reduced their energy intake to 1261 ± 152 kcal/day, or reduced their energy intake to 1891 ± 228 kcal/day and exercised on a bicycle ergometer to consume 630 ± 76 kcal/day. Decreases in the serum total cholesterol (TC), LDL-C, and apolipoprotein (apo) B levels were significantly larger, and decreases in the HDL-C and apo A1 levels were significantly smaller with the diet-and-exercise regimen than with the diet-only regimen. Consequently, the atherosclerosis index (AI: (TC–HDL-C)/HDL-C ratio) was significantly lower, and the degree of its reduction was significantly larger, after the diet-and-exercise regimen than after the diet-only regimen. These results suggest that reducing the body weight by a combination of diet and exercise has more beneficial effects on cholesterol metabolism, including changes in apo levels, than diet alone in healthy young adults. Background: There are conflicting results whether serum lipid pattern is related to the amount of white matter hyperintensities (WMHs) on magnetic resonance imaging. Little is known of the associations between lipid concentrations and the subsequent risk of the subcortical small vessel type of dementia (SSVD), in which WMHs are a prominent manifestation. Here, we determined whether lipid levels are associated with the risk of SSVD, Alzheimer's disease (AD), or mixed dementia (combined AD and SSVD). Methods: This was a longitudinal, prospective study of 329 patients with subjective or objective mild cognitive impairment at baseline. The statistical analyses included Cox proportional hazards regression with adjustments for age, gender, education, body mass index, current smoking, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and APOE ε4 genotype. Results: During the follow-up (mean 4.1 years), 80 patients converted to dementia [SSVD, n = 15 (5 %); AD, n = 39 (12 %); and mixed dementia, n = 26 (8 %)]. Serum high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL, per SD increase) was inversely associated with the risk of SSVD, whereas triglycerides (TG), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL)/HDL ratio, and TG/HDL ratio were positively associated with SSVD risk. Furthermore, the lowest HDL tertile was associated with a sevenfold, and the highest tertile of TG/HDL ratio with a threefold, increase in SSVD risk. There were no associations with the risk of AD or mixed dementia after adjustment for covariates. Conclusion: In a memory clinic population, low HDL and high TG/HDL ratio were independent risk factors of SSVD, but not of AD or mixed dementia.

When lean people adopt carbohydrate-restricted diets (CRDs), they may develop a lipid profile consisting of elevated LDL-cholesterol (LDL-C) and HDL-cholesterol (HDL-C) with low triglycerides (TGs). The magnitude of this lipid profile correlates with BMI such that those with lower BMI exhibit larger increases in both LDL-C and HDL-C. The inverse association between BMI and LDL-C and HDL-C change on CRD contributed to the discovery of a subset of individuals-termed Lean Mass Hyper-Responders (LMHR)-who, despite normal pre-diet LDL-C, as compared to non-LMHR (mean levels of 148 and 145 mg/dL, respectively), exhibited a pronounced hyperlipidemic response to a CRD, with mean LDL-C and HDL-C levels increasing to 320 and 99 mg/dL, respectively, in the context of mean TG of 47 mg/dL. In some LMHR, LDL-C levels may be in excess of 500 mg/dL, again, with relatively normal pre-diet LDL-C and absent of genetic findings indicative of familial hypercholesterolemia in those who have been tested. The Lipid Energy Model (LEM) attempts to explain this metabolic phenomenon by positing that, with carbohydrate restriction in lean persons, the increased dependence on fat as a metabolic substrate drives increased hepatic secretion and peripheral uptake of TG contained within very low-density lipoproteins (VLDL) by lipoprotein lipase, resulting in marked elevations of LDL-C and HDL-C, and low TG. Herein, we review the core features of the LEM. We review several existing lines of evidence supporting the model and suggest ways to test the model's predictions.

(1) Background: Asthma is a syndrome found in both adults and children, characterized by airflow obstruction caused by the inflammation of the airways. In recent years, an increasing number of studies have found that lipid metabolism influences both the development and symptomatology of asthma. Lipid metabolism plays an important role both in the occurrence of exacerbations and in the reduction of lung inflammation. Our study aimed to identify any type of association between patients diagnosed with asthma and their serum lipids, including HDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, total cholesterol, and triglycerides in adults. (2) Methods: To find articles for our review, we searched two platforms: PubMed and Google Scholar. A total of 309 articles from two platforms were analyzed. Finally, 12 papers were selected from the initial pool of identified articles. (3) Results: The positive correlation between triglycerides, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-cholesterol), and asthma has been demonstrated in several studies. Moreover, it appears that there is an association between biomarkers of type 2 inflammation and HDL and serum triglycerides in people with atopic status. Regarding the nutrition of asthmatic patients, the greatest impact on the development of the disease seems to be the consumption of fruit and vegetables. Several studies show that a predominantly vegan diet is associated with better control of the disease and a decrease in the number of pro-inflammatory cytokines. (4) Conclusions: Studies show a positive correlation between total cholesterol, triglyceride, and LDL-cholesterol levels and asthma and a negative correlation between HDL-cholesterol and asthma. Increased cholesterol values would lead to the stimulation of pro-inflammatory processes and the secretion of cytokines involved in these processes. The most successful diets for asthma patients seem to be those in which the consumption of fruit, vegetables, and high-fiber foods is increased because all of these food groups are rich in vitamins, antioxidants, and minerals.

HDL-cholesterol quality, including cholesterol distribution in HDL subfractions, is emerging as a key discriminant in dictating the effects of these lipoproteins on cardiovascular health. This study aims at elucidating the relationship between cholesterol distribution in HDL subfractions and CVD risk factors as well as diet quality and energy density in a population of pre- and postmenopausal women. Seventy-two women aged 52 ± 6 years were characterized metabolically and anthropometrically. Serum HDL-C subfractions were quantified using the Lipoprint HDL System. Cholesterol distribution in large HDL subfractions was lower in overweight individuals and study participants with moderate to high estimated CVD risk, hypertension, or insulin resistance. Cholesterol distribution in large, as opposed to small, HDL subfractions correlated negatively with insulin resistance, circulating triglycerides, and visceral adipose tissue (VAT). VAT was an independent positive and negative predictor of cholesterol distribution in large and small HDL subfractions, respectively. Furthermore, an increase in energy intake could predict a decrease in cholesterol levels in large HDL subfractions while lipid intake positively predicted cholesterol levels in small HDL subfractions. Cholesterol distribution in HDL subfractions may represent an additional player in shaping CVD risk and a novel potential mediator of the effect of diet on cardiovascular health.

The aim of this study was to investigate whether skeletal muscle (SM) mass correlates with plasma lipids in metabolic healthy young adults. The study was designed as a retrospective observational monocentric study. Data on plasma lipids and SM mass of subjects attending our institution from 1999 to 2014 were analyzed. Inclusion criteria were being 18–45 years old and in apparently good health. SM mass was evaluated by bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) using the equation proposed by Janssen and normalized to height as skeletal muscle index (SMI: SM mass/height2). The association between SMI and plasma lipids levels was examined using a crude and adjusted linear regression model including age, sex, BMI and waist circumference as additional covariates. The study population consisted of 450 subjects (273 females) without metabolic syndrome (12.2% with normal body weight, 33.1% overweight, and 54.7% with obesity). SMI, total-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, and Triglycerides were higher, whereas HDL-cholesterol was lower in overweight and obese patients as compared with normal weight subjects. SMI was inversely associated with HDL-cholesterol in female patients with obesity but not in male patients with obesity, in normal- or over-weight subjects (p < 0.05). These results suggest that changes in SM mass occurring in obesity could have a role in worsening lipid profile with special reference to HDL-cholesterol.

Background: Environmental and genetic factors are suggested to exhibit factor-based association with HDL-cholesterol (HDL-C) levels. However, the population-based effects of environmental and genetic factors have not been compared clearly. We conducted a cross-sectional study using data from the Japan Multi-Institutional Collaborative Cohort (J-MICC) Study to evaluate the population-based impact of smoking, drinking, and genetic factors on low HDL-C. Methods: Data from 11,498 men and women aged 35–69 years were collected for a genome-wide association study (GWAS). Sixty-five HDL-C-related SNPs with genome-wide significance (P < 5 × 10−8) were selected from the GWAS catalog, of which seven representative SNPs were defined, and the population-based impact was estimated using population attributable fraction (PAF). Results: We found that smoking, drinking, daily activity, habitual exercise, egg intake, BMI, age, sex, and the SNPs CETP rs3764261, APOA5 rs662799, LIPC rs1800588, LPL rs328, ABCA1 rs2575876, LIPG rs3786247, and APOE rs429358 were associated with HDL-C levels. The gene-environmental interactions on smoking and drinking were not statistically significant. The PAF for low HDL-C was the highest in men (63.2%) and in rs3764261 (31.5%) of the genetic factors, and the PAFs of smoking and drinking were 23.1% and 41.8%, respectively. Conclusion: The present study showed that the population-based impact of genomic factor CETP rs3764261 for low HDL-C was higher than that of smoking and lower than that of drinking.

Purpose: To assess the association between nut and seed consumption, both combined and separately, and metabolic syndrome and its components, including fasting glucose, triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, central obesity, and blood pressure. Methods: This cross-sectional analysis used data from 22,687 adults (aged ≥ 18 years) involved in seven cycles (2005–2018) of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Habitual nut and seed intakes were estimated by the Multiple Source Method using data from two 24-h dietary recalls. Metabolic syndrome was ascertained using biochemical data and self-reported medication use. Sex-specific effect estimates were obtained using logistic and linear regressions adjusting for lifestyle and socioeconomic confounders. Results: Compared to non-consumers, female, but not male, habitual consumers of either nuts or seeds had lower odds of having metabolic syndrome (OR: 0.83, 95% CI 0.71, 0.97). Both nut intake alone and seed intake alone were inversely associated with high fasting glucose and low HDL-cholesterol in females compared to non-consumers. When restricted to habitual consumers only, the combined intake of nuts and seeds at 6 g/day was associated with the lowest triglycerides and highest HDL-cholesterol in females. Combined consumption of nuts and seeds up to one ounce-equivalent (15 g) per day, but not in higher intake levels, was inversely associated with metabolic syndrome, high fasting glucose, central obesity, and low HDL-cholesterol in females. Conclusions: Nut and seed consumption, both separately or combined, below 15 g/day was inversely associated with metabolic syndrome and its component conditions in females but not males. Olive oil (OO) polyphenols have been shown to improve HDL anti-atherogenic function, thus demonstrating beneficial effects against cardiovascular risk factors. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of extra virgin high polyphenol olive oil (HPOO) v. low polyphenol olive oil (LPOO) on the capacity of HDL to promote cholesterol efflux in healthy adults. In a double-blind, randomised cross-over trial, fifty participants (aged 38·5 (sd 13·9) years, 66 % females) were supplemented with a daily dose (60 ml) of HPOO (320 mg/kg polyphenols) or LPOO (86 mg/kg polyphenols) for 3 weeks. Following a 2-week washout period, participants crossed over to the alternate treatment. Serum HDL-cholesterol efflux capacity, circulating lipids (i.e. total cholesterol, TAG, HDL, LDL) and anthropometrics were measured at baseline and follow-up. No significant between-group differences were observed. Furthermore, no significant changes in HDL-cholesterol efflux were found within either the LPOO and HPOO treatment arms; mean changes were 0·54 % (95 % CI (0·29, 1·37)) and 0·10 % (95 % CI (0·74, 0·94)), respectively. Serum HDL increased significantly after LPOO and HPOO intake by 0·13 mmol/l (95 % CI (0·04, 0·22)) and 0·10 mmol/l (95 % CI (0·02, 0·19)), respectively. A small but significant increase in LDL of 0·14 mmol/l (95 % CI (0·001, 0·28)) was observed following the HPOO intervention. Our results suggest that additional research is warranted to further understand the effect of OO with different phenolic content on mechanisms of cholesterol efflux via different pathways in multi-ethnic populations with diverse diets. Background The Hp (haptoglobin)2‐2 phenotype (~40% of people) is associated with dysfunctional high‐density lipoprotein (HDL) that is heavily oxidized in hyperglycemia, which may explain why raising HDL‐cholesterol (HDL‐C) does not reliably prevent coronary artery disease (CAD) in diabetes. Methods and Results In this observational study using longitudinal data from the ACCORD (Action to Control Cardiovascular Risk in Diabetes) lipid trial, time‐varying (achieved) HDL‐C updated at 4, 8, and 12 months, and annually thereafter over a mean of 4.7 years, was analyzed in relation to risk of CAD and secondary outcomes using Cox proportional hazards regression with time‐varying covariables among participants with (n=1781) and without (n=3191) the Hp2‐2 phenotype. Individuals with features of metabolic syndrome are particularly susceptible to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), a novel coronavirus associated with the severe respiratory disease, coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Despite considerable attention dedicated to COVID-19, the link between metabolic syndrome and SARS-CoV-2 infection remains unclear. Using data from the UK Biobank, we investigated the relationship between severity of COVID-19 and metabolic syndrome-related serum biomarkers measured prior to SARS-CoV-2 infection. Logistic regression analyses were used to test biomarker levels and biomarker-associated genetic variants with SARS-CoV-2-related outcomes. Among SARS-CoV-2-positive cases and negative controls, a 10 mg/dl increase in serum HDL-cholesterol or apolipoprotein A1 levels was associated with ∼10% reduced risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection, after adjustment for age, sex, obesity, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and coronary artery disease. Evaluation of known genetic variants for HDL-cholesterol revealed that individuals homozygous for apolipoprotein E4 alleles had ∼2- to 3-fold higher risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection or mortality from COVID-19 compared with apolipoprotein E3 homozygotes, even after adjustment for HDL-cholesterol levels. However, cumulative effects of all evaluated HDL-cholesterol-raising alleles and Mendelian randomization analyses did not reveal association of genetically higher HDL-cholesterol levels with decreased risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection. These results implicate serum HDL-cholesterol and apolipoprotein A1 levels measured prior to SAR-CoV-2 exposure as clinical risk factors for severe COVID-19 infection but do not provide evidence that genetically elevated HDL-cholesterol levels are associated with SAR-CoV-2 infection.

The objective of our study was to explore the potential benefits of combining moderate alcohol consumption with regular vigorous physical activity on HDL-cholesterol levels and its poten-tial positive impact on cardiovascular health. Materials and methods: The study comprised two groups: group A (102 patients) that consumed 10 grams of alcohol per day, specifically red wine, and increased their exercise levels in addition to their standard medical treatment, and group B (108 patients) which adhered only to their standard medical treatment. The patients were monitored for a year, during which various clinical parameters were observed. Results: Our study showed that moderate alcohol consumption, particularly red wine, along with in-creased physical activity levels, were associated with enhancements in exercise tolerance and elevated levels of HDL-cholesterol. Our findings suggest the efficacy of the intervention in im-proving lipid profiles, with the group that consumed alcohol as part of their treatment scheme, generally experiencing more pronounced positive effects. Statistically significant differences between groups in terms of angina evolution, acute myocardial infarction (AMI) recurrence, or arrhythmias evolution were not found. However, there were important differences in terms of ejection fraction (EF) improvement and quality of life, with the alcohol consuming group dis-playing greater improvements in both aspects. Conclusions: In conclusion, our study empha-sizes the potential benefits of combining moderate alcohol consumption, specifically red wine, with increased physical activity levels for improving exercise tolerance and enhancing HDL-cholesterol levels. However, further research and clinical trials are essential to fully un-derstand the mechanisms and optimize the integration of these lifestyle elements for improved cardiovascular health outcomes.

The association between phytosterols and lipid levels remains poorly assessed at a population level. We assessed the associations between serum levels of six phytosterols (campesterol, campestanol, stigmasterol, sitosterol, sitostanol and brassicasterol) and of lipids [total, low-density lipoprotein (LDL)- and high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol, triglycerides, apolipopoprotein A-IV and lipoprotein Lp(a)] in two cross-sectional surveys of a population-based, prospective study. Data from 910 participants (59.1% women, 70.4 ± 4.7 years) for the first survey (2009–2012) and from 721 participants (60.2% women, 75.1 ± 4.7 years) for the second survey (2014–2017) were used. After multivariable adjustment, all phytosterols were positively associated with total cholesterol: slope and (95% confidence interval) 1.594 (1.273–1.915); 0.073 (0.058–0.088); 0.060 (0.044–0.076); 2.333 (1.836–2.830); 0.049 (0.033–0.064) and 0.022 (0.017–0.028) for campesterol, campestanol, stigmasterol, sitosterol, sitostanol and brassicasterol, respectively, in the first survey, and 1.257 (0.965–1.548); 0.066 (0.052–0.079); 0.049 (0.034–0.063); 1.834 (1.382–2.285); 0.043 (0.029–0.057) and 0.018 (0.012–0.023) in the second survey, all p < 0.05. Similar positive associations were found between all phytosterols and LDL cholesterol. Positive associations were found between campesterol and sitosterol and HDL-cholesterol: slope and (95% CI) 0.269 (0.134–0.405) and 0.393 (0.184–0.602) for campesterol and sitosterol, respectively, in the first survey, and 1.301 (0.999–1.604) and 0.588 (0.327–0.849) in the second survey, all p < 0.05. No associations were found between phytosterols and triglyceride or lipoprotein Lp(a) levels, while a positive association between campesterol and apolipoprotein A-IV levels was found: 2.138 (0.454–3.822). Upon normal dietary intakes, serum phytosterol levels were positively associated with total and LDL cholesterol levels, while no consistent association with other lipid markers was found.

For many years, and to this day, cardiovascular disease has been and remains the leading cause of death worldwide. Cardiovascular diseases mainly affect people in countries with middle and low living standards. The aim of the study was to find out the peculiarities of lipid, carbohydrate, and hormonal changes in patients with coronary heart disease against the background of metabolic syndrome. Materials and methods: 120 patients with verified coronary heart disease were examined, including 60 patients with coronary heart disease without metabolic syndrome and 60 patients with coronary heart disease with metabolic syndrome. The control group consisted of 30 practically healthy individuals of appropriate age and sex. The content of HbA1c, glucositol C-peptide, triacylglycerols, total cholesterol, leptin, HDL-cholesterol, and LDL-cholesterol in blood serum was determined by modern methods. Results: The analysis of the results of laboratory tests of patients' blood revealed more pronounced changes in carbohydrate and lipid metabolism in patients with coronary artery disease against the background of metabolic syndrome, which indicates the severity of the clinical course in such patients. The results obtained indicate that in coronary heart disease with metabolic syndrome, there are more pronounced dysmetabolic changes: hyperleptinemia, glucosemia, elevated HbA1c, and decreased C-peptide content. Studies have shown that obesity is accompanied by high levels of leptin, which exacerbates insulin resistance and is a trigger for the development of coronary heart disease. Conclusions: 1. Leptin resistance is a potential cause of insulin resistance and, consequently, obesity, which ultimately leads to metabolic syndrome and the development of coronary heart disease. The data obtained indicate a greater tendency to obesity in women with coronary heart disease complicated by metabolic syndrome. 2. The data obtained may indicate a latent disorder of carbohydrate metabolism in patients with coronary artery disease without metabolic syndrome. 3. The detected deviations in lipid metabolism indicate the presence of type II dyslipoproteinemia in patients of group 1 and type IV dyslipoproteinemia in patients of group 2. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

PURPOSE Although the prevalence of periodontal disease in adults over the age of 50 is rapidly increasing, the association between serum lipid levels and periodontal disease in Korean adults over the age of 50 still remains to investigate. Thus, the aim was to determine the effect of serum lipid levels on periodontal disease in older adults over the age of 50 using data from the seventh Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. METHODS The study used the data of 809 adults aged ≥50 years targeted in the 7th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2016–2018. Levels of total cholesterol, triglyceride, high density- lipoprotein (HDL-cholesterol), and low density-lipoprotein (LDL-cholesterol) and periodontal conditions were measured. Complex-sample chi square test and linear regression were used to analyze the relationship serum lipid levels with periodontal disease. RESULTS The results of chi square tests showed that the prevalence of periodontal disease among the elderly ≥50 years were statistically significant differences according to gender, age, education level, marital status, and smoking status. After adjusting for all confounding factors, HDL-cholesterol alleviated periodontal disease, while LDL-cholesterol exacerbates periodontal disease. However, total cholesterol and triglycerides were not connected with periodontal disease. CONCLUSIONS Therefore, controlling HDL and LDL cholesterol levels through physical exercise could be a preventative measure for periodontal disease.

Cerebrovascular diseases and the subsequent brain hypoperfusion are at the basis of vascular dementia. Dyslipidemia, marked by an increase in circulating levels of triglycerides and LDL-cholesterol and a parallel decrease in HDL-cholesterol, in turn, is pivotal in promoting atherosclerosis which represents a common feature of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. In this regard, HDL-cholesterol has traditionally been considered as being protective from a cardiovascular and a cerebrovascular prospective. However, emerging evidence suggests that their quality and functionality play a more prominent role than their circulating levels in shaping cardiovascular health and possibly cognitive function. Furthermore, the quality of lipids embedded in circulating lipoproteins represents another key discriminant in modulating cardiovascular disease, with ceramides being proposed as a novel risk factor for atherosclerosis. This review highlights the role of HDL lipoprotein and ceramides in cerebrovascular diseases and the repercussion on vascular dementia. Additionally, the manuscript provides an up-to-date picture of the impact of saturated and omega-3 fatty acids on HDL circulating levels, functionality and ceramide metabolism. An impressive number of studies published during the past years have demonstrated that low levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) are associated with increased cardiovascular risk. Nevertheless, more recent data in both ischemic heart disease patients and general population revealed that also considerably increased HDL-C concentration could be associated with enhanced risk of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality, displaying an U-shaped association with adverse outcomes. These paradoxical findings prompted us to review the available information on this matter, concluding that the association between extremely elevated HDL-C and mortality may not be totally unexpected or unpredictable. Some unfavorable consequences of high HDL-C levels are confirmed by epidemiologic data in overtrained subjects, in whom a similar U-shaped curve is also observed between strenuous training and mortality. This review is hence aimed to summarize these evidences, proffering some possible mechanisms underlying this enigmatic association. If this association could be confirmed in further studies, it may be advisable that laboratory reporting of HDL-C should encompass a range of “desirable values” rather than indicating a single lower decision threshold, as has been suggested until presently. Background: Abnormal blood lipid levels in the general population and adverse reproductive events among women have been associated with cognitive impairment (CI). However, their relationship has not been extensively studied in community settings. Hence, this study aims to explore the association of CI with blood lipid levels in both sexes and reproductive events/trajectory among women. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among a North Indian rural population. A total of 808 adults were recruited through door-to-door household survey. Data on socio-demographic variables, reproductive profile of women, and cognitive impairment status were collected. Fasting blood sample was collected to estimate serum lipid profile. Multivariate logistic regression was performed to test for association. Results: The study demonstrated a lack of association between lipid profile and cognitive impairment among males. Surprisingly, low HDL-C among females was found to be protective against moderate/severe cognitive impairment (value of p = 0.049). Further, menopausal women and those having five or higher live births were found to be at higher risk of CI than pre-menopausal women and those with 1--2 live births, respectively. Conclusion: The present study hints toward a gender-specific association of blood lipid levels with CI. Further, higher live births and menopause appear to be important risk factors for CI among women. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Whether the association between very high HDL-cholesterol levels and cardiovascular mortality (CVM) is modulated by some facilitating factors is unclear. Aim of the study was to investigate whether the risk of CVM associated with very high HDL-cholesterol is increased in subjects with hyperuricemia. Multivariable Cox analyses were made in 18,072 participants from the multicentre URRAH study stratified by sex and HDL-cholesterol category. During a median follow-up of 11.4 years there were 1307 cases of CVM. In multivariable Cox models a J-shaped association was found in the whole population, with the highest risk being present in the high HDL-cholesterol group [>80 mg/dL, adjusted hazard ratio (HR), 1.28; 95%CI, 1.02–1.61; p = 0.031)]. However, a sex-specific analysis revealed that this association was present only in women (HR, 1.34; 95%CI, 1.02–1.77; p = 0.034) but not in men. The risk of CVM related to high HDL-cholesterol was much greater in the women with high uric acid (>0.30 mmol/L, HR 1.61; 95%CI, 1.08–2.39) than in those with low uric acid (HR, 1.17; 95%CI, 0.80–1.72, p for interaction = 0.016). In women older than 70 years with hyperuricemia the risk related to high HDL-cholesterol was 1.83 (95%CI, 1.19–2.80, p < 0.005). Inclusion of BMI in the models weakened the strength of the associations. Our data indicate that very high HDL-cholesterol levels in women are associated with CVM in a J-shaped fashion. Epidemiological studies on the association between the low carbohydrate diet (LCD) score and CVD risk factors have limited and inconsistent results. Data are from the baseline survey of Community-based Cohort Study on Nervous System Diseases. A total of 4609 adults aged ≥ 18 years were included in the study. Dietary data were assessed using a validated semi-quantitative FFQ. Multivariable logistic regression analyses were used to estimate relationships of three LCD scores with low HDL-cholesterol, high LDL-cholesterol, hypercholesterolaemia, hypertriacylglycerolaemia, impaired fasting glucose (IFG), high blood pressure and hyperuricaemia after adjusting for potential confounders. A higher LCD score was negatively associated with low HDL-cholesterol (OR: 0·65 (95 % CI 0·50, 0·83), P = 0·0001) and IFG (OR: 0·65 (95 % CI 0·51, 0·81), P = 0·001) after the final adjustment. However, there are sex differences in this result. Males in the highest quintile of the animal-based or plant-based LCD scores showed a decreased risk of low HDL-cholesterol, and females in the highest quintile of the animal-based or plant-based LCD scores showed a decreased risk of IFG than those in the lowest quintile of the LCD scores. High-density lipoproteins (HDLs), whose main role is the reverse transport of cholesterol, also have pleiotropic anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-apoptotic and anti-infectious properties. During sepsis, HDL cholesterol (HDL-C) concentration is low, HDL particle functionality is altered, and these modifications are correlated with poor outcomes. Based on the protective effects of HDL, we hypothesized that HDL-C levels could be associated with lung transplantation (LT) outcome. We thus looked for an association between basal HDL-C concentration and one-year mortality after LT. In this single-center prospective study including consecutive LTs from 2015 to 2020, 215 patients were included, essentially pulmonary fibrosis (47%) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) (38%) patients. Mortality rate at one-year was 23%. Basal HDL-C concentration stratified nonsurvivors to survivors at one-year (HDL-C = 1.26 [1.12-1.62] mmol/L vs. HDL-C = 1.55 [1.22-1.97] mmol/L, p = 0.006). Multivariate analysis confirmed that HDL-C concentration during the pretransplant assessment period was the only variable inversely associated with mortality. Moreover, mortality at one-year in patients with HDL-C concentrations =1.45 mmol/L was significantly higher (log-rank test, p = 0.00085). In conclusion, low basal HDL-C concentrations in candidates for LT are strongly associated with mortality after LT. Introduction: Metabolic syndrome is defined as a set of clinical conditions that affect approximately 25% of the world's population and 29.6% of Brazilians. This syndrome is related to increased cardiovascular outcomes, which may be predicted by the lipid profile. Bioactive compounds, such as monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs), are strong allies in preventing these outcomes. Avocado is an important food because it contains abundant bioactive compounds and MUFAs. However, few studies evaluated the effects of pure/virgin avocado oil on the lipid profile in humans with metabolic syndrome, and its effects on atherogenic indices are not known. Objective: This study evaluated avocado oil supplementation on lipid levels and atherogenic indices in patients with metabolic syndrome. Method: Thirty-one obese adults were randomised into a control group (soybean oil) and an intervention group (avocado oil). These groups were evaluated in the pre- and post-intervention periods (12 weeks) via clinical anamnesis and nutritional assessment. Results: The control group and the intervention group had higher intakes of lipids and saturated fat than recommended. For the lipid profile and atherogenic indices, no significant difference was observed between the pre- and postintervention periods. Conclusion: These results may have been due to the absence of dietary control, medication overload, intervention duration, mode of administration and dose of the supplement. The aim of this case-control study was to explore the association between serum uric acid to high density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (UHR) and the risk of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in Chinese adults. A total of 636 patients with NAFLD and 754 controls were enrolled from the Affiliated Hospital of Qingdao University, China, between January and December 2016. All patients completed a comprehensive questionnaire survey and underwent abdominal ultrasound examination and a blood test. NAFLD was diagnosed using ultrasonography after other etiologies were excluded. Logistic regression and restricted cubic spline model were conducted to evaluate the relationship of UHR with NAFLD risk. The multivariable adjusted odds ratio (95% confidence interval, CI) for NAFLD in the highest versus lowest quartile of UHR was 3.888 (2.324–6.504). In analyses stratified by sex and age, we observed significant and positive associations between UHR and the risk of NAFLD in each subgroup. In analyses stratified by body mass index (BMI), a significant and positive association was found only in individuals with a BMI of ≥ 24 kg/m2. Our dose-response analysis indicated a linear positive correlation between UHR and the risk of NAFLD. Background: Elevated high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-cholesterol) levels have been linked to unfavorable outcomes in various clinical settings, but the association with thyroid nodules remains unclear. We aimed to analyze the correlation between elevated HDL-cholesterol and the presence of thyroid nodules along with certain demographic and clinical findings. Methods: In this retrospective study, the patients were divided into three groups based on their body mass index (BMI): 30 and evaluated. Data of 677 patients aged between 15 and 95 years (52.6 ± 15.6) were evaluated. The entire study population comprised 516 females (76.2%). Results: Thyroid nodules (67.1%) and left ventricle diastolic dysfunction (LVDD) (58.1%) were the two most frequent findings in the overall cohort. In the multivariate regression model, BMI, heart rate, and HDL-cholesterol values were significant and independent predictors (p = 0.000 for all) of the presence of thyroid nodules. The presence of thyroid nodules is higher in females, particularly within the higher BMI groups [odds ratio (OR) = 1.048 (CI = 1.02–1.08) for BMI < 25, p = 0.003; OR = 1.094 (CI = 1.05–1.14) for BMI 25–29, p = 0.000; OR = 1.115 (CI = 1.05–1.19) for BMI ≥ 30]. This higher incidence is not observed in males. Conclusion: While the precise mechanisms underlying this association are yet to be fully elucidated, elevated HDL-cholesterol may serve as an indicator of thyroid nodules rather than a marker of cardiovascular protection.

BackgroundAbnormal blood lipid levels in the general population and adverse reproductive events among women have been associated with cognitive impairment (CI). However, their relationship has not been extensively studied in community settings. Hence, this study aims to explore the association of CI with blood lipid levels in both sexes and reproductive events/trajectory among women.MethodsA cross-sectional study was conducted among a North Indian rural population. A total of 808 adults were recruited through door-to-door household survey. Data on socio-demographic variables, reproductive profile of women, and cognitive impairment status were collected. Fasting blood sample was collected to estimate serum lipid profile. Multivariate logistic regression was performed to test for association.ResultsThe study demonstrated a lack of association between lipid profile and cognitive impairment among males. Surprisingly, low HDL-C among females was found to be protective against moderate/severe cognitive impairment (value of p = 0.049). Further, menopausal women and those having five or higher live births were found to be at higher risk of CI than pre-menopausal women and those with 1–2 live births, respectively.ConclusionThe present study hints toward a gender-specific association of blood lipid levels with CI. Further, higher live births and menopause appear to be important risk factors for CI among women.

Studies suggest that ATP-binding cassette transporter A1 (ABCA1 C69T) polymorphism is associated with a decreased incidence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and that there is an association between ABCA1 C69T polymorphism and the risk of dyslipidemia in diabetic individuals. However, other studies contradict these suggestions. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the prevalence of ABCA1 C69T (rs1800977) gene polymorphism in a representative sample of the Saudi population not previously diagnosed with diabetes and its possible association with dyslipidemia and dysglycemia. A cross-sectional design was used to recruit nondiabetic adults of both genders from the Saudi population in Jeddah by employing a stratified, two-stage cluster sampling method. A total of 650 people (337 men and 313 women) were recruited. Demographic, dietary, and lifestyle variables, as well as medical history and family history of chronic diseases, were collected using a predesigned questionnaire. Fasting blood samples were taken for the determination of fasting plasma glucose (FPG), glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), and lipids profile, which were followed by a 1-h oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT). Real-time PCR technology was used to determine the ABCA1 C69T gene SNP (rs1800977). The T allele of ABCA1 C69T (rs1800977) was very frequent (TT in 44.9% and CT in 43.7%). There was a trend toward significance for a higher dysglycemia percentage in people with CT and TT genotypes (25.7%, and 23.3%, respectively) compared with CC genotypes (16.2%). In addition, FPG and 1-h plasma glucose were significantly higher in people with both TT and CT genotypes compared to CC genotypes. Background: There is insufficient research on cholesterol uptake capacity (CUC) in preterm infants; therefore, the relationship between CUC and cholesterol transport in preterm infants is unclear. This study aimed to clarify the relationship between CUC and anthropometric measurements, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels, and HDL-C subclasses in preterm infants. Methods: Fifty-eight preterm infants were divided into small-for-gestational age (n = 20) (SGA) and appropriate-for- gestational age (AGA) (n = 38). CUC was measured using a fully automated immunoassay system, HI-1000. HDL-C subclasses were measured using high-performance liquid chromatography. Results: SGA showed significantly lower HDL-C and CUC levels than AGA. We found a positive correlation between CUC and birth weight, birth height, and birth head circumference in preterm infants. Moreover, CUC had a strong relationship with HDL-C and very large, large, and medium HDL-C in preterm infants. Conclusions: In preterm infants, CUC is associated with normal growth and may indicate the ability to transport cholesterol forward by large-or medium-size HDL. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Serum lipid profiles play a crucial role in diagnosing and evaluating cardiovascular diseases. However, the presence of paraprotein can lead to inaccurate dyslipidemia results on automated analyzers. A 65-year-old woman whose combined concentrations of HDL-cholesterol (HDL-C) and LDL-cholesterol (LDL-C) consistently surpassed her total serum cholesterol levels over a period of three months presented with unusual lipid component detection. Further analysis revealed the presence of a monoclonal paraprotein, identified as an IgMλ band, with a concentration of 28.0 g/L. The patient was subsequently diagnosed with Waldenström macroglobulinemia. The use of abnormal reaction kinetic curves and the β quantification method, along with an alternative method that did not suffer from interference, revealed that the monoclonal paraprotein interfered with the measurements of HDL-C, LDL-C, apolipoprotein A-I (apoA-I), and apolipoprotein B (apoB) when using the Roche detection system. This interference led to spurious elevated HDL-C concentrations and falsely decreased apoA-I and apoB concentrations, while the LDL-C results were minimally affected. Although diluting the sample normalized the HDL-C and LDL-C measurements, the interference with the apoA-I and apoB assays persisted. No other common biochemical tests were interfered with this paraprotein. Caution is advised when using a homogenous method for direct measurement of HDL-C and LDL-C in patients with monoclonal paraprotein. Techniques to recognize and eliminate this interference are available. BackgroundMyriad roles for high-density lipoprotein (HDL) beyond atheroprotection include immunologic functions implicated in the severity of coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) in adults. We explored whether there is an association between HDL and COVID-19 severity in youth.MethodsA pediatric cohort (N = 102), who tested positive for COVID-19 across a range of disease manifestations from mild or no symptoms, to acute severe symptoms, to the multisystem inflammatory syndrome of children (MIS-C) was identified. Clinical data were collected from the medical record and reserve plasma aliquots were assessed for lipoproteins by NMR spectroscopy and assayed for HDL functional cholesterol efflux capacity (CEC). Findings were compared by COVID-19 status and symptom severity. Lipoprotein, NMR spectroscopy and CEC data were compared with 30 outpatient COVID negative children.ResultsDecreasing HDL cholesterol (HDL-c), apolipoprotein AI (ApoA-I), total, large and small HDL particles and HDL CEC showed a strong and direct linear dose-response relationship with increasing severity of COVID-19 symptoms. Youth with mild or no symptoms closely resembled the uninfected. An atypical lipoprotein that arises in the presence of severe hepatic inflammation, lipoprotein Z (LP-Z), was absent in COVID-19 negative controls but identified more often in youth with the most severe infections and the lowest HDL parameters. The relationship between HDL CEC and symptom severity and ApoA-I remained significant in a multiply adjusted model that also incorporated age, race/ethnicity, the presence of LP-Z and of GlycA, a composite biomarker reflecting multiple acute phase proteins.ConclusionHDL parameters, especially HDL function, may help identify youth at risk of more severe consequences of COVID-19 and other novel infectious pathogens.

Introduction: Obesity and its co-morbidities, including type 2 diabetes (T2DM) and dyslipidemia, are accompanied by excess cardiovascular morbi-mortality. Aside from excess low density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C), atherogenic dyslipidemia (AD), mainly characterized by elevated triglycerides and decreased high density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C) levels, is often present in T2DM obese patients. Bariatric surgery, such as Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) and sleeve gastrectomy (SG), has become a reference treatment in that population. However, the respective effects of RYGB vs SG on lipid metabolism in T2DM patients have been rarely studied. Methods: A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials, comparing the effects of RGYBG vs SG on lipid metabolism 12 months after surgery in T2DM patients, was performed. Results: Four studies including a total of 298 patients (151 patients in the RYGB and 147 patients in the SG group) were examined. Despite a greater decrease in body mass index and greater improvement in glycemic control in RYGB compared to SG. RYGB vs SG was more effective in reducing total cholesterol, LDL-C, and non-HDL-C levels (mean difference [MD] −26.10 mg/dL, 95 % CI −38.88 to −13.50, p<0.00001; [MD] −20.10 mg/dL, 95 % CI −27.90 to −12.20, p<0.00001 and MD 31.90 mg/dl, 95 % CI −46.90 to −16.80, p<0.00001, respectively). Conclusions: The superiority of RYGB vs SG in reducing LDL-C, with an effect comparable to a moderate-intensity statin, suggests RYBG should be favored in hypercholesterolemic T2DM patients in order to further reduce cardiovascular risk. Variations in the perilipin (PLIN) gene have been suggested to be associated with obesity and its related alterations, but a different nutritional status seems to contribute to differences in these associations. In our study, we examined the association of several polymorphisms at the PLIN locus with obesity and lipid profile in children, and then analyzed the mediation of plasma leptin levels on these associations. The single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) rs894160, rs1052700, and rs2304795 in PLIN1, and rs35568725 in PLIN2, were analyzed by RT-PCR in 1264 children aged 6–8 years. Our results showed a contrasting association of PLIN1 rs1052700 with apolipoprotein (Apo) A-I levels in boys and girls, with genotype TT carriers showing significantly higher Apo A-I levels in boys and significantly lower Apo A-I levels in girls. Significant associations of the SNP PLIN2 rs35568725 with high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-cholesterol), Apo A-I, and non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) were observed in boys but not in girls. The associations of the SNPs studied with body mass index (BMI), NEFA, and Apo A-I in boys and girls were different depending on leptin concentration. In conclusion, we describe the mediation of plasma leptin levels in the association of SNPs in PLIN1 and PLIN2 with BMI, Apo A-I, and NEFA.
