This study presents a comprehensive risk assessment of ammonia leaks, focusing on the quantitative modelling of hazardous area ranges, concentration dynamics, and thermal radiation effects under varying leakage scenarios using the ALOHA 5.4.7 software. The analysis involves two key scenarios: an ammonia gas leak and a pool fire, each modelled under distinct atmospheric conditions. For the gas leak scenario, ammonia concentrations were mapped across ERPG-defined hazard zones, ranging from low-level irritation zones (ERPG-1) to life-threatening exposure levels (ERPG-3), with maximum concentrations reaching 1500 ppm within a 110 m radius. The second scenario examined the impact of thermal radiation from a pool fire, identifying critical radiation zones where exposure to heat fluxes exceeding 10 kW.m−2 could cause fatal outcomes within 12 m. Despite ALOHA's strengths in modelling acute exposure risks and providing valuable input for emergency response planning, the study identifies several limitations, particularly regarding the long-term environmental and health impacts of chemical releases and the effects of varying meteorological conditions. These findings suggest that integrating ALOHA with advanced real-time monitoring and AI-based prediction systems could significantly improve its capacity to manage dynamic, rapidly evolving industrial hazards. OBJECTIVE: This study provides the global-, regional- and country-level estimates on the work-related burden of diseases and accidents for 2019, including deaths, disability adjusted life years (DALY) and economic losses. METHODS: Data on occupational illnesses and injuries from international organizations, institutions, and public websites were used. Risk ratios (RR) and population attributable fractions (PAF) for the risk factor-outcome pairs were derived from the literature. Estimated mortality and DALY for a group of seven major diseases covering 120 risk-outcome pairs attributable to work were calculated for 181 countries. RESULTS: Globally, 2.9 million deaths were attributed to work, with 2.58 million deaths due to work-related diseases and 0.32 million related to occupational injuries. Globally, work-related diseases with a long latency period are increasing, while the number of occupational injuries has decreased. Work-related circulatory diseases were the major cause of 912 000 deaths globally, followed by 843 000 work-related malignant neoplasms. In high-income, American, Eastern European and Western Pacific World Health Organization (WHO) regions, however, work-related malignant neoplasms comprised the biggest disease group. DALY attributable to work were estimated to be 180 million in 2019, with an associated economic loss of 5.8% of global GDP. New estimates of psychosocial factors increased the global loss. CONCLUSIONS: The burden of work-related diseases and injuries increased by 26% from 2.3 million annual deaths in 2014 to 2.9 million in 2019. The DALY attributable to work have also substantially increased from 123 million in 2014 to 180 million in 2019 (47% increase). We found large regional and country variations.

It provides a comprehensive overview and update of global estimates of occupational injuries.

Aim: The main objectives of this article are to characterise chemical hazards and to identify the factors (circumstances) affecting the effectiveness of responses to them, the cooperation of rescue units and the local community. The article details the methods and principles of rescue operations undertaken when various hazards are present. Introduction: With the increasing chemicalisation of the economy, at the same time indispensable in people’s daily lives, the associated chemical and environmental risks are increasing. The article presents their typology based on the sources of potential incidents. The categorisation was narrowed down to hazards caused by industrial plants using chemicals and their mixtures and transport units transporting dangerous goods. The typology also includes references to selected organisational elements of rescue and firefighting operations affecting their effectiveness. Project and methods: W związku z realizacją celu pracy analizie poddana została literatura z zakresu badanego problemu, a także obowiązujące akty prawne dotyczące ochrony środowiska, przewozu materiałów niebezpiecznych oraz właściwości substancji chemicznych i ich mieszanin. W badaniach wykorzystano również sondaż diagnostyczny z ankietą, obserwację systemową oraz doświadczenie własne z bieżącej organizacji ćwiczeń WPOR, ZPOR w ZDR we współdziałaniu z PSP. W celu zgromadzenia danych wykorzystano materiały publikowane przez Komendę Główną Państwowej Straży Pożarnej. Dokonano analizy możliwych zdarzeń awaryjnych z udziałem czynników chemicznych stwarzających potencjalne zagrożenie dla życia ludzkiego, mienia oraz środowiska naturalnego. The research also used a diagnostic survey with a questionnaire, system observation and own experience from the current organisation of WPOR, ZPOR exercises in ZDR in cooperation with PSP. Materials published by the Headquarters of the National Fire Service were used to collect the data. An analysis of possible emergency events involving chemical agents posing a potential threat to human life, property and the environment was carried out. Results: The essence of actions in the context of chemical rescue is to minimise the hazard, to establish the location of the source of the emission in a short time and to stop the releasing chemical substance. These elements are influenced by the even distribution of forces and resources across the country. Recognition of chemical emissions is also an important element, which will be facilitated by the participation of a representative of the engineering and technical team representing the plant. On the other hand, an important step in recognising the threat will be the implementation by SGRChem – in all provinces – of readiness level C on conducting imaging reconnaissance using advanced technical means. This is particularly the case in the provinces of the eastern part of Poland, where chemical groups mostly only implement A and B levels. Conclusions: Istotą działań w kontekście ratownictwa chemicznego jest ograniczanie do minimum zagrożenia, ustalenie w krótkim czasie lokalizacji źródła emisji oraz zatrzymanie uwalniającej się substancji chemicznej. Wpływ na te elementy ma równomierne w skali kraju rozmieszczenie sił i środków. Istotnym elementem jest także rozpoznanie emisji substancji chemicznej, które usprawni udział przedstawiciela zespołu inżynieryjno-technicznego reprezentującego dany zakład. Z kolei ważnym krokiem w rozpoznaniu zagrożenia będzie realizacja przez SGRChem – we wszystkich województwach – poziomu gotowości C dotyczącego prowadzenia rozpoznania obrazowego przy użyciu zaawansowanych środków technicznych. W szczególności dotyczy to województw wschodniej części Polski, w których grupy chemiczne w większości realizują wyłącznie poziomy A i B. Despite various plans to rationalize antibiotic use, antibiotic resistance in environmental bacteria is increasing due to the accumulation of antibiotic residues in the environment. This study aimed to test the ability of basidiomycete fungal strains to biotransform the antibiotic levofloxacin, a widely-used third-generation broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone, and to propose enzyme targets potentially involved in this biotransformation. The biotransformation process was performed using fungal strains. Levofloxacin biotransformation reached 100% after 9 days of culture with Porostereum spadiceum BS34. Using genomics and proteomics analyses coupled with activity tests, we showed that P. spadiceum produces several heme-peroxidases together with H2O2-producing enzymes that could be involved in the antibiotic biotransformation process. Using UV and high-resolution mass spectrometry, we were able to detect five levofloxacin degradation products. Their putative identity based on their MS2 fragmentation patterns led to the conclusion that the piperazine moiety was the main target of oxidative modification of levofloxacin by P. spadiceum, leading to a decrease in antibiotic activity.

To address the issues of low strength, poor water stability, and hazardous substance leaching associated with using phosphogypsum (PG) as a direct road-based material, the traditional approach involves employing inorganic cementing materials to stabilize PG, effectively addressing the problems. This study innovatively utilizes the xanthan gum (XG) and sodium methylsiliconate (SM) as curing agents for PG to solve the above problems. An organic curing agent stabilized PG was prepared by dry mixing XG and PG. The unconfined compressive strength, water stability, and leaching behavior of stabilized PG were investigated, the leaching behavior was characterized by ion leaching concentration, and the mechanisms behind the strength development of stabilized PG were explored by SEM and FTIR. The experimental results indicate that the single incorporation of XG reduced the strength and water stability of stabilized PG, while the single incorporation of SM had a limited effect on strength and water stability. In addition, the dual incorporation of XG and SM significantly improved the strength and water stability of stabilized PG. At the same time, the dual incorporation of XG and SM greatly reduced the leaching of hazardous substances from stabilized PG. Parks and playground soils constitute a critical matrix for children exposure to hazardous substances due to their high exposure rate. However, minimal investigation has been conducted in Ghana on the subject, thus the need for this research. One hundred and twenty (120) soil samples were collected between April 2015 and March 2016 and then analyzed for heavy metals using atomic absorption spectroscopy. The health risk posed to school children by the heavy metals laden in soil was assessed via oral bioaccessibility and hazard index. The oral bioaccessibility of the metals was estimated using the simple bioaccessibility extraction test (SBET) method. Iron (Fe) measured the highest range of total metal concentrations of 2785.0–15275.0 mg kg−1 followed by Pb of 2.1–284.0 mg kg−1. The oral bioaccessibility of the metals varied significantly with Pb and Cu exhibiting the highest mean values of 47.80% and 54.45%, respectively. The sequence for the mean bioaccessibility result does not correspond with the mean concentration of metals in the soil. The hazard index (HI) for most of the heavy metals indicated no potential non-carcinogenic health risk to children (HI < 1) except for Pb. The prolonged use of leaded fuel in Ghana prior to its outright ban on January 1 2004 and the persistence of Pb in soil media may account for its high risk. The deleterious health effects of Pb on children call for the adoption and implementation of appropriate environmental management of playgrounds so as to mitigate children's exposure to soil-laden heavy metals. Aim: The article presents issues related to selected aspects of chemical and environmental rescue, their location in the legal norms in relation to the performed tasks and taking into account the needs of the society. In this respect, the legal acts relating to the operation of the system of identifying chemical and environmental rescue hazard, its transformation, and its impact on the safety and execution of tasks by the rescue entities were reviewed. Moreover the meaning of records relating to the identification of chemical hazards was analysed and clarified. The topics were based on new legal regulations on the detailed organization of the national rescue and firefighting system and guidelines covering the organization of chemical and ecological rescue in Poland. The reviewed area in this analysis relates to the identification of hazardous materials, the designation of danger zones, the ability of emergency responders to identify hazards in formal and legal conditions, and their identification by the functioning cooperating entities. The dependencies that exist in the identification system and the future directions of its development are indicated. Introduction: In today’s world, the expectations of the society for emergency services focus on the quick and efficient execution of an organized rescue operation. In chemical rescue, the primary factor affecting the course and success of the operation is the identification of the chemical threat. Conducting reconnaissance activities under conditions of changing threats requires skills and the fulfilment of a number of conditions that will affect the functioning of the rescue entities in the reconnaissance system. Experience from ongoing rescue operations shows that reconnaissance tasks are carried out to varying degrees. On the one hand, they depend on regulations, and on the other, on the capabilities of emergency responders and the difficulties arising from the resulting disasters and chemical accidents. Therefore, it is reasonable to review selected legal elements relating to the identification of hazardous materials – in particular, those that condition the efficient and effective operation of the rescue entities in terms of the existing risks. Methodology: The article was developed using analyses of legal acts and literature on improving the system of threat identification. Consideration was given to the existing threats, the current international situation, the possibility of uncontrolled action and the release of hazardous substances with chemical, biological or radiological properties, especially in the border area. In analysing the conducted research, publications on rescue law, legal norms of the national rescue and firefighting system, emergency management, guidelines from chemical and ecological rescue, articles from the area of reconnaissance and conference materials were used. Conclusions: The emergence of new regulations in the Principles of Chemical and Environmental Rescue has led to the need for a unified course of action in the area of identifying the chemical agent. Ongoing monitoring of the area for the presence of a hazardous substance – due to the frequently changing weather conditions at the scene – should be a permanent part of the competence tasks of the rescue units. In addition, continuous and effective analysis of the samples taken at the site of the hazardous substance would allow detection and identification of the hazard relatively early – so that further appropriate action could then be taken. Such a solution would allow the emergency manager to conduct a chemical rescue operation continuously and make accurate decisions at every stage of the operation, despite a possible sudden change in the weather conditions. The inclusion in the regulations of all possible elements of identification in terms of the existing hazards will affect the effectiveness of the rescue entities in the elimination of chemical, biological, radiological hazards. In recent years, numerous over-the-counter (OTC) tooth whitening products have become available online to meet the demand of consumers wanting a convenient way to whiten their smile. This study investigated whether websites selling OTC whitening products containing hydrogen peroxide to New Zealanders are complying with hazardous substance laws set by the New Zealand Environmental Protection Authority (EPA). The search engine 'Google' was used to identify websites selling and shipping OTC whitening products to New Zealand. Data were collected from these websites and analysed. A total of 24 New Zealand based (n = 16) and overseas (n = 8) websites were included. Of these, 12 (50%) provided an ingredients list, 1 (4%) mentioned all precautionary statements required by the EPA, and 21 (88%) met the EPA restrictions for supply and application of a hazardous substance. 11 (46%) warned of tooth sensitivity as a potential side-effect and 8 (33%) gave a warning for gingival irritation. Fewer than half (42%) recommended consulting a dental professional before using their product. Over-the-counter tooth whitening products being sold online to New Zealanders may be breaching conditions of the EPA and putting New Zealanders at risk. Objective: Rinsing only with water or washing with soap and water are common methods of skin decontamination for skin contaminated during a chemical hazard release. The null hypothesis was that a 15-minute water irrigation (decontamination method 1) would not be superior to decontamination using a microfiber towel, followed by a wet wipe (Signature Select Softly Flushable Tissue Better Living Brands LLC, Pleasanton, CA), followed by using another microfiber towel (decontamination method 2)., Methods: A simulated contaminant (Magic Fluorescent Glow Paint for Face and Body, iLC Shenzhen Fulimei Technology Co. LTD, Shenzhen, the People's Republic of China) was applied to the dorsal skin of each subject's forearms. Then, photographs of these subject's skin were taken before and after decontamination of the simulated contaminant by using either decontamination method 1 or 2. Each of the subjects underwent both decontamination methods in separate trials, with each subject using one forearm for decontamination method 1 and their other forearm for decontamination method 2. Discrete points of contamination were quantified on the photographs that were taken with the skin illuminated by ambient visible light or ultraviolet light (395nm, Roceei ultraviolet flashlight, China)., Results: Under visible light, no residual contamination was seen by inspecting photographs taken after decontaminating with either method. Under ultraviolet light, less visible contamination was seen by inspecting photographs taken after decontaminating with method 1 than after decontaminating with method 2., Conclusion: In this study, skin decontamination with water irrigation was superior to skin decontamination without water irrigation.

Photocatalytic oxidation of emerging contaminants (ECs) in water has recently gained extensive attentions. In this study, bismuth oxychloride-based plasmon photocatalysts (Bi-Bi 3 O 4 Cl) exhibiting high performance were successfully developed by reducing Bi3+ on the surface of Bi 3 O 4 Cl. Consequently, the photocatalysts were used to remove ECs from water. The effects of developmental process and Bi metal plasmon resonance on the photoelectric performances of Bi-Bi 3 O 4 Cl were investigated through a series of characterizations. The UV-vis diffuse reflection and photoluminescence spectra revealed that the light absorption range of the photocatalyst gradually increased and the electron recombination rate gradually decreased with the introduction of Bi metals. The optimal removal rates of ciprofloxacin and tetrabromobisphenol A by Bi-Bi 3 O 4 Cl were 93.8% and 96.4%; the respective reaction rate constants were 5.48 and 4.93 times higher than that of Bi 3 O 4 Cl. The mechanism study indicated that main reactants in the photocatalytic system were •O 2 − radicals and photogenerated holes, and the existence of oxygen vacancies and Bi metals promoted electron transfer in photocatalyst. Synthetic anion receptors are designed to increase the selectivity for anions. Neutral host ligands like bambus[6]uril or calix[6]cryptureas can ensure the stabilization of small anions by hydrogen bonds. The large and robust molecules have cavities in the form of tubes or baskets where the optimal size of the anion forms stable complexes. A new methodology was used to calculate the stability of some complexes, and based on the results, complexes of perfluorobutane sulfonate (PFBS–) were taken into consideration to analyze the stability of calix[6]arene and pillar[6]arene derivatives. The calculations showed reasonable logK values in some cases (logK ∼ 6–9) which can lead us to find a non-extreme way to extract the environmentally harmful species from nature. The edible vegetable oil industry of China is developing rapidly and still faced with serious challenges.Based on the analysis of current situation of edible oil market development in China, insufficient of hazardous substances detection in the process of processing, lacking of systematic investigation about small varieties oils marketization, insufficient of nutritional evaluation of vegetable oil and deficient of special edible blending oil research for special population, in this paper, we proposed the opportunities and prospects in Chinese market of edible vegetable oil, the accurate and appropriate processing mode of fats and oils, systematically development of small varieties oils, research of the nutritive value of edible oils, and development of special edible blend oils for special populations.We hope this review would provide useful references and suggestions for promoting the high quality development of oil processing industry in China.

Despite their many advantages, solar photovoltaic (PV) cells used for electricity generation can have negative environmental impacts. The chemicals necessary for their fabrication can be released into the environment during their disposal or following damage, such as that from natural disasters. The principle objective of this study was to assess the leaching potential of chemical species, primarily heavy metals, from perovskite solar cells (PSC), monocrystalline (MoSC) silicon solar cells, and polycrystalline (PoSC) silicon solar cells under worst-case natural scenarios. In all cases, real solar cells were used as opposed to the pure component. The toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) was used to analyze the leachates from PSCs to determine the concentrations of major component species. The results showed that broken PSCs released Si, Pb, Al, As, and Ni under TCLP conditions; lead, a major component of PSCs, was released at around 1.0 mg/L at a pH of 4.93, from both broken and unbroken PSCs. However, the concentrations of these elements in the leachate were within the toxicity characteristic (TC) limits. Encapsulation of the PSCs inhibited the release of hazardous substances, but did not completely eliminate the release of metals. TCLP results from broken MoSCs revealed that metals leached at relatively high levels: Al: 182 mg/L, Ni: 7.7 mg/L, and Cu: 3.6 mg/L. The results from broken PoSCs indicated the release of 43.9 mg/L of Cu and 6.6 mg/L of Pb, which are higher than the TC limits. These high levels may be attributed to the welding materials used on the rear side of crystalline-Si (c-Si) solar cells. This study identifies the importance of encapsulating PSCs and the welding materials on the rear side of c-Si solar cells to minimize the release of toxic substances into the environment. As the supply chain of food around the world has become more and more globalized and complicated, food safety issue has attracted considerable concern owing to the widespread pollution of the whole ecosystem and the extent of their impact on the well-being of human beings. Correspondingly, a variety of analysis approaches to detecting and even adsorbing contaminants in food have been extensively explored and investigated. Among them, Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) as potential versatile sensing materials have been utilized in the construction of multitude of sensing platforms with excellent performance to monitor different pollutants of food, including pesticide residues, heavy metals, mycotoxins and so on. Herein, we briefly introduce the progress of the MOFs-based sensing techniques, and then present the typical contributions of representative sensing platforms in detection of pesticides, heavy metals and other contaminants. Finally, we evaluate and discuss the future perspectives and challenges of MOFs in food contaminant analysis.

Equipped with hierarchical pores and three-dimensional (3D) center-radial channels, dendritic mesoporous nanoparticles (DMNs) make their pore volumes extremely large, specific surface areas super-high, internal spaces especially accessible, and so on. Other entities (like organic moieties or nanoparticles) can be modified onto the interfaces or skeletons of DMNs, accomplishing their functionalization for desirable applications. This comprehensive review emphasizes on the design and construction of DMNs-based systems which serve as sensors, adsorbents and catalysts for the detection, adsorption, and degradation of hazardous substances, mainly including the construction procedures of brand-new DMNs-based materials and the involved hazardous substances (like industrial chemicals, chemical dyes, heavy metal ions, medicines, pesticides, and harmful gases). In this work the difficulties of a safety restriction in the transport of chemical substances is explored. The ranking of dangerous substances and materials is presented to indicate that substances used in various industries have been called hazardous. Transport of sub-stances classified in hazardous group or even toxic is regulated by international rules, which apply in all countries of Europe - The European Agreement Concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road. This legislation aimed to eliminate or reduce the risks asso-ciated with transport of dangerous substances. The main aim of this article is to present the most important aspects which entrepreneurs planning the logistics of hazardous substances should consider.

It is well known that investments in new safety measures do not always give the intended effect, as new safety measures are sometimes offset by behavioural changes. In this article, we show that another cause for a reduced effect is that competition for resources can lead new safety measures to crowd out existing measures; to demonstrate this, we use a case related to the unloading of LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) at a warehouse. If this aspect is not taken into consideration, the effects of a single measure might be considered too high. An overinvestment in new safety measures might then occur. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The combustion potentiality of a substance or explosive mixture can be identified by ascertaining the structure of their chemical compounds using several methods, including infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The objective of this paper is to identify certain hazardous substances that have generated explosion or fire type events, by using modern techniques that consist in physical-chemical characterization of substances or their compounds. Infrared absorption spectra were assessed by using the attenuated total reflection analysis technique (ATR) and their evaluation was performed by using libraries within the device's software. The use of this technique is safe, being a convenient method in terms of sample preparation and quantity of sample used, the main advantage being the certainty of results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
