The primary purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of age, postoperative refraction, and pre- and postoperative pupil size on postoperative halo size with a trifocal diffractive IOL (AcrySof IQ PanOptix) and extended depth-of-focus (EDOF) IOL (TECNIS Symfony) to determine whether these factors could predict postoperative halo size.Patients and Methods: This single-center, open-label study conducted between October 2018 and April 2020 in Yokosuka, Japan included 160 patients: 80 with PanOptix and 80 with Symfony IOLs. Size and intensity of the halos were examined binocularly using a computer-based simulator (Eyeland Design Network GmbH) and scored from 0 (minimum) to 10 (maximum) at 1, 3, and 6 months postoperatively, along with the change in each variable for both IOLs. The respective correlations of halo size with age, postoperative refraction, pre- and postoperative pupil size, and discomfort level due to the halo were also investigated 6 months postoperatively.Results: Halo size and intensity were significantly mitigated between 1, 3, and 6 months postoperatively. Throughout the observation period, halo size was significantly larger with PanOptix than with Symphony (P < 0.05), and halo intensity was significantly higher with Symphony than with PanOptix (P < 0.05). The pre- and postoperative pupil size correlated positively with halo size, while age and postoperative refraction were negatively correlated, for both IOLs.Conclusion: Understanding the features and predictive preoperative factors of halos in different types of multifocal IOLs may be useful in improving patient satisfaction.Keywords: halo size, multifocal intraocular lens, biometric predictable factors, trifocal intraocular lens, extended depth-of-focus intraocular lens, photic phenomena, halo

This study aimed to evaluate glare source-induced disk halo size and assess its correlation with higher-order aberrations (HOAs), pupillometry findings, and contrast sensitivity in myopic adults (aged 23.8 ± 4.4 years). In this cross-sectional study, 150 eyes of 150 patients were assessed. All patients underwent routine ophthalmic examinations, wavefront aberrometry, halo size measurement, dynamic pupillometry, and contrast sensitivity tests. Spearman's correlation analysis and independent sample t-tests were performed for data analysis. The mean halo radius was 82.5 ± 21.8 and 236.7 ± 52.2 arc min at 5 and 1 cd/m2 luminance levels, respectively. The values were inversely correlated with internal spherical aberration (SA) (r = −0.175, p = 0.032 and r = −0.241, p = 0.003, respectively), but not correlated with spherical equivalent (SE, both p > 0.05). Positive correlations were observed between halo radius and pupil size, contraction amplitude, and dilation speed during pupillary light reflex. Halo radii at 5 and 1 cd/m2 luminance levels were not significantly correlated with the area under the log contrast sensitivity function (r = −0.093, p = 0.258 and r = −0.149, p = 0.069, respectively). The mean halo radius was not clinically different between myopic and healthy eyes at 5 cd/m2 luminance level and did not differ significantly between the high and low-to-moderate myopia at 5 and 1 cd/m2 luminance levels (all p > 0.05). According to a stepwise linear regression model, the internal SA had a negative effect on the halo radius under low photpic condition; the average pupil diameter, internal SA and corneal HOAs played a large role in determining the halo radius under mesopic condition.

In this work, we consider the effect of the cosmological constant on galactic halo size. As a model, we study the general relativistic derivation of orbits in the Schwarzschild-de Sitter metric. We find that there exists a length scale corresponding to a maximum size of a circular orbit of a test mass in a gravitationally bound system, which is the geometric mean of the cosmological horizon size squared and the Schwarzschild radius. This agrees well with the size of a galactic halo when the effects of dark matter are included. The size of larger structures such as galactic clusters and superclusters are also well-approximated by this scale. This model provides a simplified approach to computing the size of such structures without the usual detailed dynamical models. Some of the more detailed approaches that appear in the literature are reviewed, and we find the length scales agree to within a factor of order one. Finally, we note the length scale associated with the effects of MOND or Verlinde's emergent gravity, which offer explanations of the flattening of galaxy rotation curves without invoking dark matter, may be expressed as the geometric mean of the cosmological horizon size and the Schwarzschild radius, which is typically 100 times smaller than .
