The objective of this meta-analysis was to develop and evaluate models for predicting nitrogen (N) excretion in feces, urine, and manure in beef cattle in South America. The study incorporated a total of 1,116 individual observations of N excretion in feces and 939 individual observations of N excretion in feces and in urine (g/d), representing a diverse range of diets, animal genotypes, and management conditions in South America. The dataset also included data on dry matter intake (DMI; kg/d) and nitrogen intake (NI; g/d), concentrations of dietary components, as well as average daily gain (ADG; g/d) and average body weight (BW; kg). Models were derived using linear mixed-effects regression with a random intercept for the study. Fecal N excretion was positively associated with DMI, NI, nonfibrous carbohydrates, average BW, and ADG and negatively associated with EE and CP concentration in the diet. The univariate model predicting fecal N excretion based on DMI (model 1) performed slightly better than the univariate model, which used NI as a predictor variable (model 2) with a root mean square error (RMSE) of 38.0 vs. 39.2%, the RMSE-observations SD ratio (RSR) of 0.81 vs. 0.84, and concordance correlation coefficient (CCC) of 0.53 vs. 0.50, respectively. Models predicting urinary N excretion were less accurate than those derived to predict fecal N excretion, with an average RMSE of 43.7% vs. 37.0%, respectively. Urinary and manure N excretion were positively associated with DMI, NI, CP, average BW, and ADG and negatively associated with neutral detergent fiber concentration in the diet. As opposed to fecal N excretion, the univariate model predicting urinary N excretion using NI (model 10) performed slightly better than the univariate model using DMI (model 9) as predictor variable with an RMSE of 36.0% vs. 39.7%, RSR 0.85 vs. 0.93, and CCC of 0.43 vs. 0.29, respectively. The models developed in this study are applicable for predicting N excretion in beef cattle across a broad spectrum of dietary compositions and animal genotypes in South America. The univariate model using DMI as a predictor is recommended for fecal N prediction, while the univariate model using NI is recommended for predicting urinary and manure N excretion because the use of more complex models resulted in little to no benefits. However, it may be more useful to consider more complex models that incorporate nutrient intakes and diet composition for decision-making when N excretion is a factor to be considered. Three extant equations evaluated in this study have the potential to be used in tropical conditions typical of South America to predict fecal N excretion with good precision and accuracy. However, none of the extant equations are recommended for predicting urine or manure N excretion because of their high RMSE, and low precision and accuracy.

The intensification of cattle post-weaning phase in tropical pastures depends on supplementation strategies. The objective of this study was to assess the effect of increasing levels of concentrate supplement on the intake, apparent digestibility of nutrients, feeding behavior, and performance of Girolando steers on tropical pasture during the post-weaning phase in the rainy season. Forty uncastrated male Girolando steers, initially weighing 266.62 ± 32.95 kg and aged 11 mo, were allocated into four concentrate supplement levels: 0.2%, 0.3%, 0.4%, and 0.5% body weight. The steers grazed on Urochloa brizantha (Hochst. ex A. Rich.) R.D. Webster 'Marandu' pasture. The intakes of supplement DM, non-fibrous carbohydrates (NFC), and total digestible nutrients increased linearly (P < 0.05) with the level of supplement offered to the steers. In a similar response, the apparent digestibility of DM and NFC from the diet also rose linearly (P < 0.05). Grazing time, total feeding time, and total chewing time decreased (P < 0.05) with the increasing levels of concentrate supplementation. In contrast, the time expended on feeding at the trough, biting rate, and the time taken to ruminate each cud increased (P < 0.05) with the supplementation level. Final body weight and average daily gain increased linearly (P < 0.05) with increasing concentrate supplementation. We recommend supplying concentrate supplement at a level of 0.5% of the body weight of steers on tropical pasture during the post-weaning phase in the rainy season. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: To identify the causative agents of TBP‐induced haemolytic anaemia and determine haematological parameters that indicate haemolytic anaemia in grazing cattle. Methods: Eighty‐two Korean indigenous cattle (Hanwoo) were divided into two groups: grazing (n = 67) and indoor (n = 15) groups. CBC and serum biochemistry were performed. PCR was conducted using whole blood‐extracted DNA to investigate the prevalence of TBPs. Results: TBP‐induced haemolytic anaemia was observed in the grazing group. In grazing cattle, co‐infection (43.3%, 29/67) was most frequently detected, followed by T. orientalis (37.6%, 25/67) and Anaplasma phagocytophilum infections (1.5%, 1/67). In indoor cattle, only co‐infection (20%, 3/15) was identified. Grazing cattle exhibited regenerative haemolytic anaemia with marked monocytosis, mild neutropenia, and thrombocytopenia. According to grazing frequency, the 1st‐time grazing group had more severe anaemia than the 2nd‐time grazing group. Elevations in indirect bilirubin and L‐lactate due to haemolytic anaemia were identified, and correlations with the respective markers were determined in co‐infected grazing cattle. Conclusions: Quantitative evaluation of haematocrit, mean corpuscular volume, and reticulocytes (markers of regenerative haemolytic anaemia in cattle) was performed for the first time. Our results show that, in addition to T. orientalis, A. phagocytophilum is strongly associated with anaemia. Abstract Background Limited information is available regarding the nutritive value and structural characteristics of multispecies swards when rotationally grazed. Methods Three farmlet types were investigated in terms of their nutritive value: Lolium perenne (LP); L. perenne+Trifolium repens (LP+TR); and a multispecies sward containing grasses, legumes and herbs (MSS). Farmlets were stocked with beef steers (2.5 livestock units ha−1), grazed on a 1 ha scale to 6 cm (MSS) and 4 cm (LP and LP+TR) residuals. Results A greater ash concentration was found in MSS than LP (84 vs. 75 g kg−1 DM). Both LP+TR and MSS had higher crude protein and lower neutral detergent fibre concentrations than LP. The relative ranking of water soluble carbohydrate and dry matter (DM) concentration was LP > LP+TR > MSS. Despite the leaf component of the LP farmlet contributing more to herbage DM, the organic matter digestibilities of the swards were similar. Conclusions The MSS and LP+TR farmlets achieved similar forage quality under intensive grazing to LP. However, it is worth noting that MSS had a higher concentration of acid detergent lignin, which can negatively impact digestibility. Further investigation is needed to determine optimal grazing management practices that can minimise the effects of higher lignin concentration on digestibility in multispecies swards.

The taste and tenderness of meat are the main determinants of carcass quality in many countries. This study aimed to discuss the mechanisms of intramuscular fat deposition in grazing and house-breeding cattle. We performed transcriptome analysis to characterize messenger RNA and microRNA (miRNA) expression profiles. A total of 456 and 66 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and differentially expressed (DE) miRNAs were identified in the adipose tissue of grazing and house-breeding cattle. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathway analysis identified the association of DEGs with fatty acid metabolism, fatty acid degradation, peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors signaling pathway, adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase signaling pathway, adipocytokine signaling pathway, and the association of DE miRNAs with mitogen-activated protein kinase signaling pathway. Apolipoprotein L domain containing 1, pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase 4, and sphingosine-1-phosphate lyase 1 genes may be the key regulators of fat metabolism in grazing cattle. Finally, we found that miR-211 and miR-331-5p were negatively correlated with the elongation of very long-chain fatty acids protein 6 (ELOVL6), and miR-331-5p might be the new regulator involved in fat metabolism. The results indicated that ELOVL6 participated in various functions and pathways related to fat metabolism. Meanwhile, miR-331-5p, as a new regulator, might play an essential role in this process. Our findings laid a more in-depth and systematic research foundation for the formation mechanism and characteristics of adipose tissue in grazing cattle.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of the daily supplementation with a low dosage of a blend of condensed and hydrolysable tannins on the in vitro and in situ digestibility of protein and fibrous feedstuffs. In situ ruminal incubation assays were conducted on seven protein and five roughage feedstuffs with and without tannin supplementation (1 g/kg DM intake). From these same cattle, rumen fluid was collected for in vitro incubations of the same feedstuffs. In vitro assays we evaluated the gas production (GP) up to 24 h and, sequentially, digestibility of dry matter (IVDMD), crude protein (IVCPD), fiber (IVNDFD), and ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N). Background: In the Western Highlands of Cameroon (WHC), information on the nutritional value of fodder species consumed by ruminants is very limited. Methods: Through interviews with farmers and monitoring of animals on the range, information was obtained on the types of fodder resources consumed by the ruminants. Samples of each forage species were collected in 15 districts, mixed, chopped, and dried in a ventilated oven at 60°C, and then ground for chemical composition analysis. Results: Twenty‐two forage species were identified. Among these species, Vernonia amygdalina (29.43% ± 0.45% dry matter [DM]) and Pennisetum clandestinum (87.21% ± 1.33% DM) were, respectively, the highest in protein and neutral detergent fiber contents. Manihot esculenta was one of the most energy‐rich forages in terms of forage unit for lactation and forage unit for meat production. Hierarchical ascending classification revealed three main groups of forages, respectively, rich in crude fiber (Group 1), protein (Group 2), and energy (Group 3). Conclusions: The present study identified 22 forage species browsed by ruminants in WHC. Further studies should be carried out to determine the antinutritional factors and to evaluate their nutrient value using in vitro or in situ digestibility techniques. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is an important public health concern around the world. Limited information exists about AMR in grasslands-based systems where antibiotics are seldom used in beef cattle. The present study investigated the impacts of oxytetracycline (OTC) on the microbiome, antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), and virulence factor genes (VFGs) in grazing steers with no previous exposure to antibiotic treatments. Four steers were injected with a single dose of OTC (TREAT), and four steers were kept as control (CONT). The effects of OTC on fecal microbiome, ARGs, and VFGs were assessed for 14 days using 16S rRNA sequencing and shotgun metagenomics. Alpha and beta microbiome diversities were significantly affected by OTC. Following treatment, less than 8% of bacterial genera had differential abundance between CONT and TREAT samples. Seven ARGs conferring resistance to tetracycline (tet32, tet40, tet44, tetO, tetQ, tetW, and tetW/N/W) increased their abundance in the post-TREAT samples compared to CONT samples. In addition, OTC use was associated with the enrichment of macrolide and lincosamide ARGs (mel and lnuC, respectively). The use of OTC had no significant effect on VFGs. In conclusion, OTC induced short-term alterations of the fecal microbiome and enrichment of ARGs in the feces of grazing beef cattle. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The objective of this study was to develop near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) calibrations to predict fecal nutrient composition, intake, and diet digestibility from beef cattle fed high forage diets. Heifers were fed 12 different forage-based diets (>95% forage dry matter basis) in 3 total collection digestibility studies, resulting in individual fecal samples and related spectra (n  = 135), corresponding nutrient intake, and apparent total tract digestibility (aTTD) data. Fecal samples were also collected from steers grazing two annual and two perennial forage mixtures over two growing seasons. Samples (n  = 13/paddock) were composited by paddock resulting in 30 samples from year 1, and 24 from year 2. The grazing fecal spectra (n  = 54) were added to the existing fecal composition spectral library. Dried and ground fecal samples were scanned using a FOSS DS2500 scanning monochromator (FOSS, Eden Prairie, MN). Spectra were mathematically treated for detrend and scatter correction and modified partial least squares (MPLS) regression was performed. The coefficient of determination for cross validation (R 2cv) and standard error of cross validation (SECV) were used to evaluate the quality of calibrations. Prediction equations were developed for fecal composition [organic matter (OM), nitrogen (N), amylase-treated ash-corrected neutral detergent fiber (aNDFom), acid detergent fiber (ADF), acid detergent lignin (ADL), undigestible NDF after 240 h of in vitro incubation (uNDF), calcium (Ca), and phosphorus (P)], digestibility [DM, OM, aNDFom, N], and intake [DM, OM, aNDFom, N, uNDF]. The calibrations for fecal OM, N, aNDFom, ADF, ADL, uNDF, Ca, P resulted in R 2cv between 0.86 and 0.97 and SECV of 1.88, 0.07, 1.70, 1.10, 0.61, 2.00, 0.18, and 0.06, respectively. Equations predicting intake of DM, OM, N, aNDFom, ADL, and uNDF resulted in R 2cv values between 0.59 and 0.91, SECV values of 1.12, 1.10, 0.02, 0.69, 0.06, 0.24 kg·d−1, respectively, and SECV values between 0.00 and 0.16 when expressed as % body weight (BW). Digestibility calibrations for DM, OM, aNDFom, and N resulted in R 2cv ranging from 0.65 to 0.74 and SECV values from 2.20 to 2.82. We confirm the potential of NIRS to predict fecal chemical composition, digestibility, and intake of cattle fed high forage diets. Background: Infection with tick-borne pathogens (TBPs) causes anemia, jaundice, and growth retardation in cattle. Many studies have conducted antigen (Ag) tests for major TBPs, such as Anaplasma spp. and Theileria spp., in Korean indigenous cattle (KIC); however, few studies have analyzed antibodies (Ab) against these pathogens. Materials and Methods: This study simultaneously tested 15 housed cattle raised indoor for over a year and 67 grazing cattle for Anaplasma spp. and Theileria spp. Ag using polymerase chain reaction analysis and Ab using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Results: The A. phagocytophilum was detected in 3 housed cattle (20.0%) and 30 grazing cattle (44.8%), whereas the T. orientalis was detected in 3 housed cattle (20.0%) and 54 grazing cattle (80.6%). The positivity rates for Anaplasma spp. Ab did not differ significantly between housed and grazing cattle (4 out of 15 [93.3%] and 55 out of 67 [80.0%], respectively). The positivity rates for Theileria spp. Ab were higher in grazing cattle than in housed cattle (21 of 67 [31.3%] and 0 out of 15 [0.0%], respectively) ( P < 0.01). No difference was observed between the frequency of grazing and the abundance of Ab against either pathogen. Meanwhile, as a result of comparing the detection of pathogen Ag and Ab, Anaplasma spp. showed the highest proportions of 73.3% and 47.8% in Ag (-)/Ab (+) for housed cattle and grazing cattle, respectively. Theileria spp. showed the highest rates of 80.0% in Ag (-)/Ab (-) for housed cattle and 52.2% in Ag (+)/Ab (-) for grazing cattle. Conclusions: This is the first study to determine the impact of antibody abundance against Anaplasma spp. and Theileria spp. on antigen prevalence in KIC.

Objective On the hypothesis that grazing of cattle prompts organs to secrete or internalize circulating microRNAs (c-miRNAs) in parallel with changes in energy metabolism, we aimed to clarify biological events in adipose, skeletal muscle, and liver tissues in grazing Japanese Shorthorn (JSH) steers by a transcriptomic approach. Methods The subcutaneous fat (SCF), biceps femoris muscle (BFM), and liver in JSH steers after three months of grazing or housing were analyzed using microarray and quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR), followed by gene ontology (GO) and functional annotation analyses. Results The results of transcriptomics indicated that SCF was highly responsive to grazing compared to BFM and liver tissues. The ‘Exosome’, ‘Carbohydrate metabolism’ and ‘Lipid metabolism’ were extracted as the relevant GO terms in SCF and BFM, and/or liver from the >1.5-fold-altered mRNAs in grazing steers. The qPCR analyses showed a trend of upregulated gene expression related to exosome secretion and internalization (charged multivesicular body protein 4A, vacuolar protein sorting-associated protein 4B, vesicle associated membrane protein 7, caveolin 1) in the BFM and SCF, as well as upregulation of lipolysis-associated mRNAs (carnitine palmitoyltransferase 1A, hormone-sensitive lipase, perilipin 1, adipose triglyceride lipase, fatty acid binding protein 4) and most of the microRNAs (miRNAs) in SCF. Moreover, gene expression related to fatty acid uptake and inter-organ signaling (solute carrier family 27 member 4 and angiopoietin-like 4) was upregulated in BFM, suggesting activation of SCF-BFM organ crosstalk for energy metabolism. Meanwhile, expression of plasma exosomal miR-16a, miR-19b, miR-21-5p, and miR-142-5p was reduced. According to bioinformatic analyses, the c-miRNA target genes are associated with the terms ‘Endosome’, ‘Caveola’, ‘Endocytosis’, ‘Carbohydrate metabolism’, and with pathways related to environmental information processing and the endocrine system. Conclusion Exosome and fatty acid metabolism-related gene expression was altered in SCF of grazing cattle, which could be regulated by miRNA such as miR-142-5p. These changes occurred coordinately in both the SCF and BFM, suggesting involvement of exosome in the SCF-BFM organ crosstalk to modulate energy metabolism.

Animals (grazing, working, or intrusion) in produce production areas may present a potential contamination source of foodborne pathogens on produce. Cattle grazing on native pecan production orchards, a common practice in the southern United States, provides an opportunity to study the impact of grazing practice and waiting periods on contamination rates of foodborne pathogens of tree nuts. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of Salmonella and Shiga toxin–producing Escherichia coli (STEC) in native pecan production orchards as influenced by waiting periods between grazing cattle and pecan harvest. Soil (10 g), cattle feces (10 g), and in-shell pecans (25 g) were sampled from five cattle-grazed orchards in areas with cattle removed 2 or 4 months before harvest and not removed. Five nongrazing orchards were sampled at harvest for comparison. Detection and isolation of the pathogens were performed by enrichment, selective isolation, and multiplex PCR. Statistical analyses were performed using contingency tables with Pearson's chi-square test. The prevalence of STEC (36%) and Salmonella (29%) in cattle-grazed orchards was significantly higher than in nongrazed orchards (13 and 7%, respectively). STEC prevalence in cattle-grazed orchards was higher (38%) in areas with cattle at harvest than in fenced areas where cattle were removed 2 (29%) and 4 (27%) months before harvest. Salmonella prevalence was similar in areas without fencing (31%) and areas with cattle removed at 2 (22%) and 4 (30%) months before harvest. However, there were no significant differences (P > 0.05) in contamination rates between waiting periods for either pathogen, suggesting a limited impact of waiting periods on reducing the risk of contamination. The objective of this meta-analysis was to develop and evaluate models for predicting nitrogen (N) excretion in feces, urine, and manure in beef cattle in South America. The study incorporated a total of 1,116 individual observations of N excretion in feces and 939 individual observations of N excretion in feces and in urine (g/d), representing a diverse range of diets, animal genotypes, and management conditions in South America. The dataset also included data on dry matter intake ( DMI ; kg/d) and nitrogen intake ( NI ; g/d), concentrations of dietary components, as well as average daily gain ( ADG ; g/d) and average body weight ( BW ; kg). Models were derived using linear mixed-effects regression with a random intercept for the study. Fecal N excretion was positively associated with DMI, NI, nonfibrous carbohydrates, average BW, and ADG and negatively associated with EE and CP concentration in the diet. The univariate model predicting fecal N excretion based on DMI (model 1) performed slightly better than the univariate model, which used NI as a predictor variable (model 2) with a root mean square error ( RMSE ) of 38.0 vs. 39.2%, the RMSE-observations SD ratio (RSR) of 0.81 vs. 0.84, and concordance correlation coefficient ( CCC ) of 0.53 vs. 0.50, respectively. Models predicting urinary N excretion were less accurate than those derived to predict fecal N excretion, with an average RMSE of 43.7% vs. 37.0%, respectively. Urinary and manure N excretion were positively associated with DMI, NI, CP, average BW, and ADG and negatively associated with neutral detergent fiber concentration in the diet. As opposed to fecal N excretion, the univariate model predicting urinary N excretion using NI (model 10) performed slightly better than the univariate model using DMI (model 9) as predictor variable with an RMSE of 36.0% vs. 39.7%, RSR 0.85 vs. 0.93, and CCC of 0.43 vs. 0.29, respectively. The models developed in this study are applicable for predicting N excretion in beef cattle across a broad spectrum of dietary compositions and animal genotypes in South America. The univariate model using DMI as a predictor is recommended for fecal N prediction, while the univariate model using NI is recommended for predicting urinary and manure N excretion because the use of more complex models resulted in little to no benefits. However, it may be more useful to consider more complex models that incorporate nutrient intakes and diet composition for decision-making when N excretion is a factor to be considered. Three extant equations evaluated in this study have the potential to be used in tropical conditions typical of South America to predict fecal N excretion with good precision and accuracy. Dairy farming in Japan has low milk supply and reproductive rate per cattle, which is considered to be due to lack of proper breeding management. In order to solve this problem, there is a demand for a breeding management system that does not require human intervention, utilizing the ICT and robot technology. Studies on cow health and breeding management using various sensors have been reported; in this paper, we develop the system to collect the amount of activity and position of the grazing cattle in vast land. The developed system is (i) the "cattle sensor" composed of a GPS module and an acceleration sensor and (ii) the data transfer system composed of a wireless module and solar cells. The cow sensor can be used continuously for 2 months without battery replacement and is a system that can be used in vast land and mountain areas. Fertilizer recommendations for day and night grazing of milking cattle on land in Hokkaido are based on previous studies of nutrient dynamics. This study confirmed the applicability of recommendations to different grazing conditions and conducted observations to extend the versatility of the fertilizer recommendation. We estimated the dynamics of fertilizer nutrients under various grazing regimes, namely with different cattle types (dairy heifers, beef breeding cows or beef heifers), stocking methods (rotational stocking or continuous stocking), seasons (throughout grass growing season or after harvest of the first crop) and times (24‐hr grazing or time restricted to 5–9 hr/day). Body weight, herbage intake and excretion were measured, and the total intake and return of nutrients to the pasture were calculated. Nutrient removal by grazing, calculated as intake minus return through excretion, increased with herbage intake. Almost all the nutrients removed under grazing throughout the growing season approached the upper or lower limits of our previously reported levels. In many cases, changes in the amounts of soil nutrients with grazing were close to the estimated amounts removed from the soil in the grass growth periods. These results show that the pasture nutrient dynamics quantified in our previous study for lactating cattle are also applicable to dairy heifers and beef cattle and to time‐restricted grazing as well as grazing after 1st cut. This study is to investigate the difference in bovine fecal microbiota between grazing and feedlot Angus cattle. Fecal samples were collected from six Angus cattle grazed on grassland and six Angus cattle fed on a feedlot. The fecal bacterial community was analyzed by high-throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA gene. Sequencing of the V3–V4 region totally produced 1,113,170 effective tages that were computationally clustered into 775 operational taxonomic units (OTUs). These 775 OTUs were taxonomically assigned to bacterial 12 phyla, 19 classes, 25 orders, 54 families, 141 genera, and 145 species. The dominant phyla were Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes. There was similar species richness between grazing and feedlot Angus beef, while higher species diversity was observed in feedlot Angus beef. The relative abundance of Firmicutes, Cyanobacteria, Elusimicrobia and Patescibacteria was significantly different between grazing and feedlot Angus beef (p < 0.05). At a genus level, five microbiotas were significantly different between the two groups and all belonged to the Firmicutes phylum. These significant differences in microbiota composition between grazing and feedlot Angus beef may have an impact on the meat quality of Angus beef.

Integrated-crop-livestock-forestry (ICLF) systems are currently promoted as a measure for sustainable intensification of agricultural production. However, due to complex interactions among ICLF components, we are still lacking evidence about the system’s resilience regarding water availability, especially for regions characterized by pronounced wet and dry seasons and frequent droughts. For a mature ICLF system in the Cerrado biome of central-west Brazil comprising rows of eucalyptus trees (Eucalyptus grandis x Eucalyptus urophylla, H13 clone) at a spacing of 22 m in combination with Brachiaria brizantha cv. BRS Piatã pasture we continuously measured soil moisture (SM) until 1 m depth and supported this data with measurements of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) and aboveground green grass biomass (AGBM) across transects between the tree rows for almost two years. Across the seasons a distinct gradient was observed with SM being lower close to the tree rows than in the space between them. During winter SM decreased to critical values near the tree lines in the topsoil. During spring and summer, incident PAR was 72% and 86% lower close to the trees than at the center point. For autumn and winter PAR was more evenly distributed between the tree rows due to inclination with notably up to four times more radiation input near the tree lines compared to spring and summer. AGBM showed a clear distribution with maximum values in the center and about half of the biomass close to the tree rows. Our data suggest that, restrictions in AGBM accumulation shifted among seasons between water limitations in winter and light limitations during summer. Interestingly, SM changes during wetting and drying events were most pronounced in subsoils near the tree rows, while the topsoil showed much less fluctuations. The subsoil in central position showed the lowest SM dynamics in response to drought maintaining a relative high and constant SM content, therefore functioning as important water reservoirs likely improving the resilience of the system to drought stress. Results of this study could help to improve management and the design of ICLF systems in view of sustainability and resistance to (water) crises but should be further supported by in depth analysis of soil water dynamics as affected by climate gradients, soil types and different management practices.

Ketosis is a metabolic disorder that has an important impact on health and productivity in dairy cattle during early lactation. In Colombia, the incidence and risk factors for ketosis development have not been studied. The objectives of the present study were to determine the incidence of subclinical (SCK) and clinical ketosis (CK) and to determine the risk factors associated with ketosis within the first 6 weeks of lactation in dairy cattle in Colombia. A prospective cohort study was carried out. A convenience sample of 150 lactating dairy cows from ten commercial dairy farms in the Cundi-Boyacencian Andean plateau were tested weekly using a point of care device to measure β-hydroxybutyrate during the first 6 weeks of lactation. Incidence of SCK and CK was calculated. Risk factors were evaluated using a survey for each animal and for each farm. Potential risk factors were evaluated using a X2 test, Relative Risk was calculated for significant variables by the X2 test (P ≤ 0.05) and these variables were included in the logistic regression model. Cumulative incidence of SCK was 25.33%, 3.33% for CK, and overall incidence of ketosis was 26%. In the logistic regression model, parity 3 or more, herd size > 150 animals, body condition score ≥ 3, retained placenta, and metritis were determined as risk factors for ketosis. The results of this study confirm previous reports in which a high body condition score, increased parity, herd size, retained placenta, and metritis are associated with an increased risk of ketosis in stabled and grazing cattle. Micrometeorological techniques offer the possibility of a non-interfering measurement of enteric emissions from cattle in their natural environment, where animals do not need to be encumbered or handled. However, the grazing environment is a difficult application for these techniques. This study reports on an experimental design using an inverse dispersion method (IDM) to measure enteric methane (CH 4 ) emissions, and its application to 15 rather distinct cattle trials in three types of feeding situations: summer grazing, winter swath grazing, and winter feeding. The IDM design was based on long and narrow animal paddocks with line-averaging sensors measuring CH 4 concentration alongside the long axes of the paddock. Emissions were calculated based on the difference in concentration between the two measurement paths. The narrow paddock has many advantages for an IDM calculation: it avoids the need to monitor animal positions; it helps ensure measurable downwind concentration; and it increases the range of useable wind directions. Four different sensor configurations were used in the trials, differing in the number of concentration sensors (one or two) and sensor paths (two or four). Some configurations used sensor aiming motors to give multiple measurement paths and others used mirrors to create segmented paths (i.e., to go around a paddock corner). Cattle emissions measured with the IDM design showed good agreement across the 15 trials, consistent with high forage diets. When expressed in terms of CH 4 yield (g/kg dry matter intake), the three feeding situations averaged 21.3 (summer grazing), 23.4 (winter grazing), and 23.9 (winter feeding). Based on the trial-to-trial consistency of the results, the similarity with other literature studies, and the success of a previous tracer-release study, we conclude that the narrow paddock IDM design provides a flexible and accurate method for calculating CH 4 emissions from grazing cattle. The maintenance of anthelmintic-susceptible parasite refugia to delay the onset of anthelmintic resistance is an almost impossible effort in many grazing livestock production countries given that current refugia consist of already resistant parasites. Rather, efforts could be focused on replacing the resistant parasite refugia by susceptible parasite ones and implementing sustainable parasite control measures from then on. To this purpose, a trial was conducted to attempt to establish a new population of ivermectin-susceptible Cooperia sp. on a beef cattle farm with proven problems of ivermectin-resistant Cooperia . During two consecutive years, 82 (Year 1) and 100 (Year 2) recently weaned and parasite-free heifers were inoculated with 40,000 or 30,000 susceptible Cooperia L3, respectively, at a time when levels of resistant parasite refugia were normally low. The animals were subsequently allowed to graze on the problem pastures during autumn until the end of spring. Levels of parasitism in the animals and on pasture were monitored monthly and animals were treated with levamisole when needed. The combination of parasitological monitoring and local epidemiological knowledge was essential to determine when treatments were to be administered. No clinical signs of gastrointestinal parasitosis in the herd were observed throughout the study and unnecessary treatments were avoided. Faecal egg counts reduction tests (FECRT) and controlled efficacy tests (CET) employing worm counts were carried out at different times throughout the study to determine the clinical efficacy (FECRT) and the absolute efficacy (CET) of ivermectin, respectively. The clinical efficacy of ivermectin increased from an initial 73% to 99.4%, while the absolute efficacy increased from 54.1% to 87.5% after just two animal production cycles. The switch from a resistant parasite population to a susceptible one requires knowledge of parasitological epidemiology, especially in relation to seasonal variations of parasite populations in both the host and in refugia. As daily methane production (DMP; g CH4/day) is strongly correlated with dry matter intake (DMI), the breeding of cattle that require less feed to achieve a desired rate of average daily gain (ADG) by selection for a low residual feed intake (RFI) can be expected to reduce DMP and also emission intensity (EI; g CH4/kg ADG). An experiment was conducted to compare DMP and EI of Angus cattle genetically divergent for RFI and 400-day weight (400dWT). In a 6-week grazing study, 64 yearling-age cattle (30 steers, 34 heifers) were grazed on temperate pastures, with heifers and steers grazing separate paddocks. Liveweight (LW) was monitored weekly and DMP of individual cattle was measured by a GreenFeed emission monitoring unit in each paddock. Thirty-nine of the possible 64 animals had emission data recorded for 15 or more days, and only data for these animals were analysed. For these cattle, regression against their mid-parent estimated breeding value (EBV) for post-weaning RFI (RFI-EBV) showed that a lower RFI-EBV was associated with higher LW at the start of experiment. Predicted dry matter intake (pDMI), predicted DMP (pDMP) and measured DMP (mDMP) were all negatively correlated with RFI-EBV (P < 0.05), whereas ADG, EI, predicted CH4 yield (pMY; g CH4/kg DMI) were not correlated with RFI-EBV (P > 0.1). Daily CH4 production was positively correlated with animal LW and ADG (P < 0.05). The associations between ADG and its dependent traits EI and pMY and predicted feed conversion ratio (kg pDMI/kg ADG) were strongly negative (r = -0.82, -0.57 and -0.85, P < 0.001) implying that faster daily growth by cattle was accompanied by lower EI, MY and feed conversion ratio. These results show that cattle genetically divergent for RFI do not necessarily differ in ADG, EI or pMY on pasture and that, if heavier, cattle with lower RFI-EBV can actually have higher DMP while grazing moderate quality pastures. Este trabalho foi realizado com o objetivo de avaliar a massa de forragem (MF), a taxa de acúmulo diário (TAD), a oferta de forragem (OF), a taxa de lotação (TL), a porcentagem de Arachis pintoi (PAR), o ganho médio diário (GMD) e o ganho por hectare (GPV/ha) de novilhas de corte em pastejo de Coastcross-1 consorciada com Arachis pintoi. Os consórcios avaliados foram: CA0 = coastcross + Arachis pintoi sem adubação nitrogenada; CA100 = coastcross + Arachis pintoi com 100 kg de nitrogênio; CA200 = coastcross + Arachis pintoi com 200 kg de nitrogênio; e C200 = coastcross com 200 kg de nitrogênio, distribuídos em delineamento de blocos ao acaso, com duas repetições. O manejo do pasto foi o de lotação continua com carga animal variável utilizando-se novilhas mestiças com três animais-testes por consórcio. A massa de forragem nas pastagens de coastcross + Arachis pintoi adubadas com 0, 100 e 200 kg de nitrogênio e na pastagem de coastcross adubada com 200 kg de nitrogênio foi de 2.641, 2.431, 2.760 e 2.704 kg de MS/ha, respectivamente. A taxa de acúmulo diário foi semelhante (66,12 kg de MS/ha) entre as pastagens; o verão foi a estação de maior produção, seguido da primavera, do outono, que não diferiram entre si, e do inverno (108,6; 71,1; 54,2; 30,6 kg de MS/ha, respectivamente). Na associação de coastcross + Arachis pintoi sem adubação nitrogenada, foram obtidas a maior oferta de forragem e a menor taxa de lotação (4,0 UA/ha). As maiores taxas de lotação e as menores ofertas de forragem foram observadas com a adubação nitrogenada. A porcentagem de Arachis pintoi foi maior na primavera e, na associação coastcross + Arachis pintoi sem adubação, as estimativas visuais foram sempre superiores às medidas, em virtude do baixo teor de matéria seca dessa leguminosa. O ganho médio diário foi maior no cultivo em consórcio e adubação com 200 kg de nitrogênio e na pastagem de coastcross em cultivo exclusivo com 200 kg de nitrogênio em comparação àquelas de coastcross + Arachis adubada com 100 kg de nitrogênio e sem adubação (0,51; 0,51; 0,42 e 0,38 kg/dia, respectivamente). Os ganhos anuais por hectare foram superiores a 1.000 kg/ha/ano e foram maiores no verão (221,4 kg/ha).This trial was carried out to evaluate forage mass (FM), daily accumulation rate (DAR), forage offer (FO), stocking rate (SR), Arachis pintoi percentage (APP), average daily gain (ADG) and gain per hectare (GPH) of beef heifers under grazing in Coastcross-1 and Arachis pintoi mixed pasture during different seasons, from July 2003 to June 2004. The treatments were: CA0 = Coastcross + Arachis pintoi without N; CA100 = Coastcross + Arachis pintoi with 100 kg of N; CA200 = Coastcross + Arachis pintoi with 200 kg of N; and C200 = Coastcross with 200 kg of N, distributed in a randomly block design, with two repetitions. Pasture management was done through continuous grazing with variable stocking rate, using crossbred heifers with three test animals per treatment. The FM was 2641, 2431, 2760 and 2704 kg of DM/ha for CA0, CA100, CA200 and C200, respectively. Treatments presented similar DAR (66.12 kg of DM/ha) between pastures, with higher production in the summer, followed by spring and autumn, which were not different from each other, and the winter with the lowest value: 108.6; 71.7; 54.2; 30.6 kg of DM/ha, respectively. In the CA0 treatment, the highest FO and the lowest SR were obtained (4.0 AU/ha). The highest SR and lowest FO were observed in treatments with nitrogen fertilization, without difference among them. The APP in the mixture was higher in the spring, and for the CA0 treatment, with visual estimations were always higher in function of the lower dry matter percentage of this legume. For ADG was higher for CA200 and C200 treatments in relation to CA100 and CA0 with values of 0.51, 0.51, 0.42 and 0.38 kg/day, respectively. The GPH were above 1000 kg/ha/year and the summer presented the highest gain (221.4 kg/ha).

During grazing, some of the nutrients ingested by cattle are returned to grassland as urine and dung patches and can be lost as greenhouse gases. Sites where cattle congregate are more likely to have overlapping excreta patches favouring enhanced nitrous oxide (N 2 O) emissions. However, there is no consensus about the magnitude of these or simultaneous methane (CH 4) emissions or potential mitigation options. This study investigated the effect of combined cattle dung and urine depositions on N 2 O and CH 4 emissions, compared with emissions from separate depositions, under different weather conditions. Local emission factors (EFs) were then calculated for both gases. A quantitative assessment of published studies was also performed to search for N 2 O emissions drivers. Two field experiments were performed during two 98-day trials under dry and wet conditions in Tandil, Argentina. Treatments included fresh excreta patches of urine (0.75 L), dung (2.50 kg), dung + urine (2.50 kg + 0.75 L) from Holstein dairy cows, and a control (without excreta). Soil and excreta properties were analysed, and N 2 O and CH 4 fluxes from the patches were measured using the static chamber technique. Patches containing dung were shown to be localised CH 4 hotspots. Urine applied to soil, and the addition of urine to dung patches had a negligible effect on CH 4 fluxes. Urine, dung and combined patches were found to be localised N 2 O sources. Adding urine to dung patches under wet weather had a significant synergetic effect (threefold increase) on cumulative N 2 O emissions compared with the theoretical sum of separate excreta patches. Adding urine to dung patches under dry conditions gave an additive effect on N 2 O. These findings suggest that preventing overlapping excreta patches under wet conditions can help mitigate N 2 O emissions from temperate managed grazed pastures. The effect of combining excreta patches was also evident in the EF values obtained. That for CH 4 was consistent with the default IPCC value (0.75 g CH 4 kg−1 VS), while N 2 O (EF = 0.03–0.39%) was lower than the updated IPCC 2019 value of 0.6%. • Overlapping excreta patches from cattle may increase greenhouse gas emissions. • N 2 O and CH 4 fluxes were measured from separated and combined urine and dung patches. • Avoiding combined excreta patches in wet conditions could mitigate N 2 O emissions. • Adding urine to dung patches had a negligible effect on dung-based CH 4 emissions. • Local emission factors for N 2 O and CH 4 from excreta patches were calculated. Grasslands are often grazed by cattle and many grassland birds nest on the ground, potentially exposing nests to trampling. We tested for trampling risk introduced by cattle to nests of endangered Florida Grasshopper Sparrows (Ammodramus savannarum floridanus) using experimentally paired grids of artificial nests (i.e., clay targets) similar in size to nests of Florida Grasshopper Sparrows and counted the number of clay targets that were broken in paired grazed and ungrazed enclosures. Clay targets in grazed grids were trampled 3.9% more often than their respective ungrazed grids, and measurements of cattle presence or density were correlated with the number of broken clay targets, suggesting that excluding cattle during breeding is an important management recommendation for the Florida Grasshopper Sparrow. Trampling rates within grazed enclosures were spatially homogeneous with respect to cattle infrastructure such as supplemental feeding troughs and fences, and forests and stocking density were poor predictors of trampling rates when excluding ungrazed grids. We used population viability analysis to compare quasi-extinction rates, intrinsic growth rates, and median abundance in grazed and ungrazed Florida Grasshopper Sparrow aggregations to further understand the biological significance of management aimed at reducing trampling rates during the breeding season. Simulations indicated that trampling from grazing increased quasi-extinction rates by 41% while reducing intrinsic growth rates by 0.048, and reducing median abundance by an average of 214 singing males after 50 years. Management should avoid grazing enclosures occupied by Florida Grasshopper Sparrows during the nesting season to minimize trampling rates. Our methods that combine trampling experiments with population viability analysis provide a framework for testing effects from trampling on other grassland ground-nesting birds, and can directly inform conservation and management of the Florida Grasshopper Sparrow.

Cyanobacteria blooms are common in Baltic Sea and their intensity have been increased due to anthropogenic eutrophication. In this study we investigated the cyanotoxin levels in the water samples collected from four different locations in the Baltic Sea at three different seasons including summer 2011. Protein phosphatase 2A (PP2A) inhibition assays, Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) were employed to detect cyanotoxin variants. Microcystin- LR equivalents (MCE) were detected in a number of the water samples collected at site A (0.4 to 0.64 μg MCE/ L) and at site B (0.24 to 0.44 μg MCE/ L). Cyanotoxin concentrations, as measured by ELISA, ranged between 0.98 -7.45 μg MCE/L in samples collected at site A and between 0.12 to 0.68 μg MCE/L, in samples collected at site B. By using LC-MS one of the molecules present in the samples from site A was determined to be nodularin (0.213 to 0.524 μg/L) whereas samples from site B did not contain this toxin nor did they contain any of the most toxic microcystin species mentioned. The data obtained show good correlation with the MC concentration changes measured in samples and these concentrations were relatively higher during warmer months. In addition we also investigated the adsorption of toxins from water into the circulation of grazing cattle and the results show no measureable liver damage resulting from cyanotoxin poisoning. Abstract: Ticks are vectors of various pathogens that affect humans and animals throughout the world. Anaplasma bovis is one of the most important tick-borne pathogens that cause cattle diseases but there is still very little information available about this agent in Korea. In the present study, 535 Haemaphysalis longicornis tick pools were analyzed from grazing cattle in five Korean provinces. A. bovis was detected in 50 (9.3%) of 535 tick pools using 16S rRNA-based PCR. A. bovis infections were detected for the first time in ticks feeding on cattle in Chungbuk, Geongbuk, and Jeonbuk provinces in Korea. The 50 positive PCR products were sequenced successfully and compared with sequences in GenBank. Phylogenetic analysis of the Korean isolates classified them into four genotypes with nucleotide sequence identities of 99.4–100%. Abstract: This study was carried out to identify the tick species that infest grazing cattle and to determine the presence of tick-borne pathogens transmitted by these ticks in Korea. A total of 903 ticks (categorized into 566 tick pools) were collected from five provinces during 2010–2011. The most prevalent tick species was Haemaphysalis longicornis, followed by three Ixodes spp. ticks. The collected ticks were infected with both rickettsial and protozoan pathogens. In all, 469 (82.9%) tick pools tested positive for the Anaplasma/Ehrlichia 16S rRNA gene, whereas 67 (11.8%) were positive for the Babesia/Theileria 18S rRNA gene. Among the rickettsial pathogens, E. canis was detected with the highest rate (22.3%), followed by A. platys (20%), E. chaffeensis (19.4%), E. ewingii (19.3%), Rickettsia sp. (12.4%), A. phagocytophilum (5.5%) and E. muris (0.5%). Among the protozoan pathogens, T. equi was detected with the highest rate (7.2%), followed by T. sergenti/T. buffeli (3.7%) and B. caballi (0.35%). Simultaneous infections with up to seven pathogens were also identified. In particular, ticks infected with rickettsial pathogens were also infected with protozoan pathogens (22 samples). Abstract: Information about ingestive events like chewing and biting is useful for estimation of intake and monitoring of grazing behaviour. We present an automatic tool to decode ingestive sounds of cattle into ingestive events. Ingestive sounds can be recorded easily and without alteration of normal grazing behaviour by placing a microphone on the forehead of the animal. However, recorded sound need to be decoded automatically for the method to be of practical use. Hidden Markov models have been successfully used to segment and classify acoustic signals. In this work we extend the use of hidden Markov models to recognise ingestive sounds of cattle. We present new findings about the spectral content of the acoustic signals and a novel language model for the recognizer. Three types of ingestive events (bites, chews and chewbites) by cows grazing tall (24.5±3.8cm) or short (11.6±1.9cm) alfalfa or fescue were successfully recognised. Recognition rates were 84% for tall alfalfa, 65% for short alfalfa, 85% for tall fescue and 84% for short fescue. The article reports on the results of research which was conducted to evaluate the physical properties of soil (porosity, bulk density, saturated hydraulic conductivity) of a Pallic soil (Pukemutu silt loam) and pasture production on a dairy farm in Southland, New Zealand, under a number of different cattle grazing strategies: (i) normal grazing management on undrained land, (ii) normal grazing practice on drained land, (iii) restricted autumn grazing, (iv) restricted grazing when soil conditions were wet, (v) never pugged, and (vi) never grazed. Researchers found that there were no significant differences in any soil physical properties measured on cattle grazed treatments. They also determined that spring pasture yield from the never grazed treatment was greater (P < 0.05) than the drained and undrained standard practice grazing treatments for one of the three seasons. Researchers concluded that the never pugged grazing strategy failed to prevent soil compaction by dairy cows and that when soil water content was greater than the plastic limit, the pugged grazing strategy probably contributed to both soil treading damage and compaction during the traditionally wet early spring period.

An evaluation was done of the effect of leucaena height (90 and 120 cm) on the ingestive behavior (IB) of Zebu cattle (n=10) during three annual seasons (northwind, dry and rainy) in dry tropical vegetation in Yucatan state, Mexico. Bite rate (b min-1), grazing time (sec) per feeding station (GTS) and movement time (sec) between feeding stations (MTS) were documented by direct observation. Bite size (g bite-1) and intake rate (g min-1) were calculated. Leucaena height affected some IB components. The height x season interaction was significant (P<0.05) for bite rate, bite size and intake rate. Bite rate was higher in the 90 cm treatment than in the 120 cm treatment during the rainy (39 vs 37) and dry seasons (38 vs 34). Bite size was larger in the 90 cm treatment (> 0.50 g) than in 120 cm treatment (0.46 g) in the dry and northwind seasons; intake rate followed the same pattern. GTS was only significantly different for the main effect of season; it was highest during the rainy season, following by the northwind and dry seasons. MTS did not differ (P>0.05) between treatments. A leucaena height of 90 cm favored higher total and available DM yield, which resulted in a higher intake rate over the short-term in two of the three studied seasons. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Body weight (BW) is used to detect health and nutritional disorders in cattle, as well as calculate profitability of the production system based on weight gain curves. In grazing systems, measuring BW frequently implies moving animals, which is labor intense, stressful, and reduces grazing time and feed intake. All of which negatively impacts animal performance. An automated scale in the pasture can reduce labor and animal handling, while ensuring an accurate BW estimation. Our objective was to evaluate the functionality and accuracy of an automatic wireless scale system equipped with solar panels (SmartScale, C-LOCKTM), when compared to a conventional scale located at the cattle working facility. Eight multiparous beef cows were weighed in a 14-day interval for a period of 57 days with a conventional scale, while at the same time BW was measured daily with an automated scale located at the pasture in front of the water trough. This wireless system registers BW every time the animal approaches the water trough and automatically transmit it to a server via cellular network. Correlation between weighing systems was evaluated through a linear regression (R Core Team, 2019), where the adjusted R2 value was 0.99, determining an excellent linear relationship between values obtained by the conventional scale and values obtained by the automated scale. In addition, the automated scale registered the time of day, time spent in the scale, and number of daily visits. The probability to find an animal at the scale varies between 15% to 20% during daylight, decreasing under 9% during the night, with 2.56±1.50 average number of visits per day, where animals spend in average 2.94±1.84 minutes. In conclusion, the automated scale has the ability to measure BW with great precision and has potential to be used as a complimentary instrument to evaluate animal behavior in grazing systems. Simple Summary: This study is to investigate the difference of bovine fecal microbiota between grazing and feedlot Angus cattle. The fecal bacterial community was analyzed by high-throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA gene from six Angus cattle grazed on grassland and six Angus cattle fed on a feedlot. A total of 775 OTUs were taxonomically assigned to bacterial 12 phyla, 19 classes, 25 orders, 54 families, 141 genera, and 145 species. The dominant phyla were Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes. There was similar species richness between grazing and feedlot Angus beef, while species diversity was higher in feedlot Angus beef. The relative abundance of Firmicutes, Cyanobacteria, Elusimicrobia and Patescibacteria was significantly different between grazing and feedlot Angus beef (p < 0.05). At the genus level, five microbiotas were significantly different microbiotas between the two groups and all belonged to the Firmicutes phylum. These significant differences in microbiota composition between grazing and feedlot Angus beef may have an impact on the meat quality of Angus beef. Monitoring the licking behaviour in grazing cattle is a potential means for quantifying block supplement intake. The current study aimed to 1) evaluate the capability of an ear-tag accelerometer to identify the licking behaviour at a block supplement in grazing cattle and 2) validate individual licking state (LS) duration predicted by an accelerometer and radio-frequency identification (RFID) system. Four out of 12 Angus steers weighing 384 ± 9.7 kg (mean ± SD) were given free access to a 900 m2 supplement yard with access to two RFID-equipped automatic supplement feeders provided daily from 15:00 to 18:00 h for 10 days. Each steer was fitted with an ear-tag containing a 3-axis accelerometer set at a frequency of 25 Hz. Accelerometer data were segmented into three window sizes (3, 5, and 10 s) and further processed using four machine learning (ML) algorithms: Random Forest (RF), Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGB), Logistic Regression (LR) and Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA). The best performance in classifying licking behaviour was obtained from the combination of XGB and 10 s window size with an accuracy, Kappa coefficient, and F1 score of 93%, 0.88, and 0.88, respectively. Accelerometers and RFID systems consecutively under-predicted and over-predicted LS duration by 20% and 6%, with a mean absolute error (MAE) proportion of 22% and 10%, a ratio of root mean square prediction error (RSR) of 0.33 and 0.14 and a modelling efficiency (MEF) of 0.89 and 0.98. Overall, both the ear-tag accelerometer and RFID system was capable of monitoring the licking behaviour and LS duration of grazing cattle accessing block supplements. • Licking behaviour of grazing cattle were monitored using an ear-tag accelerometer and a RFID system. • Block supplements were provided through two automatic supplement feeders equipped with RFID systems. • Using XGB algorithm, ear-tag accelerometer could identify licking behaviour at a block supplement in grazing cattle. • Licking state duratioyyyns predicted by the ear-tag accelerometer and RFID system were acceptable.
