Metal oxide semiconductors (MOSs) hold great promise for electronic devices such as gas sensors. The utilization of ZnO as a conductometric gas sensor material can be traced back to its early stages; however, its application has primarily been limited to high-temperature environments. A gas sensor based on highly porous and interconnected 3D networks of ZnO tetrapod (ZnO-T) micro-nano structures was fabricated via an easy chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method. Homemade instruments were utilized to evaluate the gas-sensing of the sample at room temperature. It exhibited good gas-sensing at room temperature, particularly with a response of up to 338.80% toward 1600 ppm ethanol, while also demonstrating remarkable repeatability, stability, and selectivity. Moreover, the unique gas-sensing properties of ZnO-T at room temperature can be reasonably explained by considering the effect of van der Waals forces in physical adsorption and the synergistic effect of carrier concentration and mobility. Air pollution is a severe concern globally as it disturbs the health conditions of living beings and the environment because of the discharge of acetone molecules. Metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) nanomaterials are crucial for developing efficient sensors because of their outstanding chemical and physical properties, empowering the inclusive developments in gas sensor productivity. This review presents the ZnO nanostructure state of the art and notable growth, and their structural, morphological, electronic, optical, and acetone‐sensing properties. The key parameters, such as response, gas detection limit, sensitivity, reproducibility, response and recovery time, selectivity, and stability of the acetone sensor, have been discussed. Furthermore, gas‐sensing mechanism models based on MOS for acetone sensing are reported and discussed. Existing experiments have revealed that methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI3 or CH3NH3PbI3) materials show favorable gas‐sensing properties to reducing gas NH3 and oxidizing gases O2 and O3. The first step to effective gas‐sensing by using semiconductor materials for gas‐sensing applications is to recognize a target gas through gas–solid interaction. To explore the sensing mechanisms of perovskite materials to different oxidizing and reducing gases, the changes of skeleton structures of MAPbI3 in reducing gas NH3 and oxidizing gases O2 and O3, adsorption energy, and charge transfer between gases and semiconductors are investigated through large‐scale quantum dynamics simulations. By using three adsorption models, the differences and similarities of adsorption mechanisms of MAPbI3 for gases NH3, O2, and O3 are illustrated. These adsorption mechanisms are expected to provide new ideas for developing innovative sensing elements made of perovskite materials with stronger stability, high sensitivity, and high selectivity.
