Background and Study Aim. Motor skills, cooperation, and discipline are important for elementary school children. The purpose of this research is to develop a game-based physical education learning model that is effective in improving motor skills, cooperation, and discipline in elementary school students. Material and Methods. This type of research is Research and Development with the ADDIE model (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation). The validation subjects of the game-based learning model are six expert lecturers with professors and doctoral degrees. The effectiveness test subjects were 46 upper grade elementary school students (aged 10-12 years). The statistical analysis used was Aiken validity analysis and Intraclass Correlation Coefficients, and to analyse the effectiveness of the product using paired sample test analysis. Results. The results show that the game-based learning model is effective for improving motor skills (p-value 0.000 < 0.05), cooperation (p-value 0.000 < 0.05), and discipline (p-value 0.000 < 0.05) in upper grade elementary school students. The developed learning model is valid and reliable, so it is very effective to be used by Physical Education teachers for the learning process. Conclusions. The learning model through this game is expected to be able to bridge the shift in the character values of students in a good direction, along with the development of games and technology that are very strong magnets. For further researchers, further studies and developments are needed to add to the repertoire of game models to improve motor skills, cooperation, and discipline. This will support the learning process of physical education in elementary schools in accordance with the applicable curriculum.

Computational thinking (CT) education has drawn increasing attention from educators and researchers. This study conducted a meta-analysis of 27 empirical studies to examine the effectiveness of game-based learning (GBL) for fostering students' CT. The effects of various factors on the learning process for acquiring CT were also examined. The results showed that (a) conducting GBL can foster students' CT, and the overall effect was at the upper-middle level (Hedges' g =.600, 95% CI [.465,.735], p <.001). (b) Furthermore, conducting GBL can improve students' CT concepts (Hedges' g =.916, 95% CI [.410, 1.423], p <.001), CT skills (Hedges' g =.494, 95% CI [.389,.600], p <.001), and CT perspectives (Hedges' g =.927, 95% CI [.039, 1.816], p <.05). (c) Additionally, game mode, teaching context, and participant characteristics have positive effects on CT. Based on the findings, it is suggested that using more unplugged games and video games, designing collaborative game activities, and tailoring approaches according to gender difference and programming experience can effectively promote CT. Abstract Background Serious games are promising for stroke rehabilitation, with studies showing a positive impact on reducing motor and cognitive deficits. However, most of the evidence is in the context of single-user rehabilitation, and little is known concerning the impact in multi-user settings. This study evaluates the impact that different game modes can have on engagement and social involvement during a two-user game. Specifically, we want to understand the benefits of game modalities based on competition, co-activation, and collaboration and analyze the influence of different motor and cognitive deficits and personality traits. Methods We developed a two-player setup—using tangible objects and a large screen interactive table—for upper limb rehabilitation purposes. We implemented a game that, while keeping the same basic mechanics, can be played in the three different modes (Competitive, Co-active, and Collaborative). We ran a within-person randomized study with 21 stroke survivors that were paired and played the game in its three versions. We used the Game Experience Questionnaire—Core Module to assess engagement and the Social Presence Module to assess Social Involvement. For personality, motor, and cognitive function, users answered the International Personality Item Pool (short version), Fugl-Meyer Assessment—Upper Extremity, Modified Ashworth Scale, and Montreal Cognitive Assessment, respectively. Results The Collaborative mode promoted significantly more Behavioral Involvement. The Competitive mode promoted more Flow and Challenge than the Co-active mode with participants with better cognitive performance, with low extraversion, or with higher motor skills. Participants with higher cognitive deficits reported more Competence with the Co-active mode. Conclusions Our results indicate that, for multi-user motor rehabilitation settings, the collaborative mode is the more appropriate gaming approach to promote social involvement, showing a high potential for increasing adherence and effectiveness of therapy. Additionally, we show that a player's motor and cognitive ability and personality should be considered when designing personalized tasks for multiplayer settings.

The aim of this study was to analyze the physical response of soccer referees eleven-a-side (AC11), assistant soccer referees (AA11) and soccer referees seven-a-side (AC7) during official matches, using absolute speed ranges and the maximum speed peak. (Peak velocity) individualized. 36 soccer referees (25.6 ± 4.7 years) participated in this study, refereeing a total of 36 soccer matches. The total distance covered and the percentage of distance covered at different intensities were recorded from absolute and relative ranges using the Peak velocity of the 40-m speed test. The main results indicated that AC11 covered a greater percentage of distance (p 0.05) were found in the range 80-100% of the individual Peak velocity. The results obtained suggest that the demands of the game should not only be focused on understanding the physical response taking into account absolute values, but also taking into account the Peak velocity reached by the soccer referee.

The aim of the study was to analyze the influence of the game modalities applied to the soccer competition in U-12 category on the technical-tactical demand. During the 2016-2017 season, 18 men's soccer matches in Spain were analyzed, 6 by modality (eleven-a-side, n = 6; seven-a-side, n = 6; eight-a-side, n = 6), recording a total of 7.275 technical-tactical actions. The dependent variables were grouped into offensive variables (start of the attack, progression of the attack, end of the attack and dribbles) and in defensive variables (defensive organization and recovery of possession). To analyze the difference between variables based on the type of game modality, the one-way ANOVA test with Tukey post hoc was used. The main results indicated that eight-a-side is a modality that enhances the execution of the offensive phase, and the build up and end of the attack through nearby passes. On the other hand, F11 encourages the start of the attack made through distant passes and attack moves through individual technical actions. Defensive technical actions are also enhanced in eight-a-side with more situations of withdrawal and high pressure in this modality. The dimensions of the pitch and the number of participating players are decisive in the technical-tactical actions of the U-12 soccer players.

The overall purpose of the present study was to examine the distribution of the Hexad gamification user types and the correlations of gamification experience, game mode, and gender with the user types' scores within the context of an ODL system. Here, we study how the mode (competitive, co-active, collaborative) in which a multi-user game is presented impacts engagement and social involvement. Methods We collected data from 20 pairs of community-dwelling older adults (71.5 ± 8.7 years) in a study following a within-persons design. The participants performed a two-player upper limb rehabilitation game with three conditions (Competitive, Co-active, and Collaborative modes). Engagement and social involvement were assessed through the Core Module and Social Presence Module, respectively, from the Game Experience Questionnaire. To infer the impact of personality and cognitive function, users answered the International Personality Item Pool (short version) and the Montreal Cognitive Assessment, respectively. Results Results show that the Collaborative game mode promotes more social involvement when compared to Competitive and Co-active modes. This result is mostly explained by those participants with higher cognitive skills, and those that are more extrovert. Extrovert participants feel more empathy and are behaviorally more involved when playing the Collaborative mode. Also, the Collaborative mode is shown to be appropriate to promote interaction with participants that previously had a distant relationship, while the Competitive mode seems to be more beneficial to promote empathy between players with a closer relationship. Conclusions The Collaborative game mode elicited significantly higher social involvement in terms of Empathy, Positive Affect, and Behavioral Involvement. Hence, this game mode seems to be the most adequate choice to be used in multiplayer rehabilitation settings, where social interaction is intended.

The aim of the study was to compare the effectiveness of three modes of school dental health education (SDHE) and the two frequencies of reinforcements, on the oral health status of children. Three hundred and sixty school children aged 8 to 9 years participated in this study. Dental caries (dft/DMFT), oral hygiene (OHI-S) and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) scores were recorded by a calibrated investigator. The interventions included three different modes of SDHE (drama, game and flashcards). One mode of SDHE was randomly allotted to each school. Children were randomly sub-divided based on the frequency of reinforcement provided (3 months and 6 months). Post-intervention data were collected after 2 years. There was a significant reduction in the dft [drama (p = 0.006), game (p = 0.001) and flashcards (p = 0.002)] and OHI-S scores [drama and game (p < 0.001) and flashcards (p = 0.01)] and significant improvement in the total OHRQoL scores [drama (p = 0.001), game (p = 0.016) and flashcards (p = 0.023)] in all the three modes. Children who received game mode SDHE every 3 months had a significantly higher number of filled primary teeth (p = 0.03) compared to children who received the reinforcement every 6 months. All three modes were effective in improving the oral health status of school children. Game mode had the highest impact followed by drama and flashcard modes. Reinforcements given every 3 months using the game mode had a positive influence on the oral health of these children. Health educators must focus on child-friendly modes to make the health information more retentive. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Maintaining social relationships is a basic human need and particularly essential in old age, including when living in a retirement home. Multiplayer video games can promote positive social interactions among players from different generations while playing. Yet, such facilitation of positive social interactions depends on specific game design. To systematically investigate the effects of game design on social interaction between seniors and their coplayers, the game Myosotis FoodPlanet was developed in this study, and the impacts of 3 different game modes on social interaction were compared in a controlled field trial., Objective: This study aims to compare the effects of 3 different game modes (competitive, cooperative, and creative) on social interactions (verbal and nonverbal communication) between seniors and their younger coplayers., Methods: This study was conducted in a Swiss retirement home as a controlled field trial. Participants were residents of the retirement home (N=10; mean age 84.8 years, SD 5.9 years) and played in pairs with their caregivers. Each pair played 3 game modes in random order. This resulted in 30 game sequences of 20 minutes each. A within-subject design was applied with game mode as the within-factor and social interaction as the outcome variable. To assess the quality of social interaction, 30 video-recorded game sequences were analyzed based on an event sampling method., Results: Analysis of variance for repeated measurements revealed significant effects: there was significantly more verbal communication in the creative mode than in the cooperative mode (P=.04) with a strong effect size (Cohen f=0.611). An examination of verbal communication revealed more game-related communication in the creative mode than in the cooperative mode (P=.01) and the competitive mode (P=.09) with marginally significant effects and strong effect sizes (Cohen f=0.841). In addition, significantly more biography-related communication occurred in the creative mode than in the cooperative mode (P=.03), with a strong effect size (r=0.707). Regarding nonverbal communication (eg, laughing together), analysis of variance for repeated measurements showed significant differences among the game modes (P=.02) with a strong effect size (Cohen f=0.758). Results showed that there was significantly more laughing together in the competitive mode (competitive>cooperative>creative)., Conclusions: The results show that game mode can be an important factor for shaping the social interactions of players playing together. Compared with other modes, creative game modes can increase verbal communication. In contrast, competitive modes may stimulate more laughing together.
