The data for 200 objects are made public, including the 100 galaxies of the First Public Data Release (DR1). Data were obtained with the integral-field spectrograph PMAS /PPak mounted on the 3.5 m telescope at the Calar Alto observatory. Two different spectral setups are available for each galaxy, (i) a low-resolution V500 setup covering the wavelength range 3745-7500 Å with a spectral resolution of 6.0 Å (FWHM); and (ii) a medium-resolution V1200 setup covering the wavelength range 3650-4840 Å with a spectral resolution of 2.3 Å (FWHM). The sample covers a redshift range between 0.005 and 0.03, with a wide range of properties in the color-magnitude diagram, stellar mass, ionization conditions, and morphological types. All the cubes in the data release were reduced with the latest pipeline, which includes improved spectrophotometric calibration, spatial registration, and spatial resolution. The spectrophotometric calibration is better than 6% and the median spatial resolution is 2´´ 4. In total, the second data release contains over 1.5 million spectra., Unión Europea. Abstract

Le future survey spettroscopiche di galassie osserveranno la struttura a larga scala dell Universo su volumi molto estesi, con l’obiettivo di testare il Modello Cosmologico Standard con grande accuratezza. Questo sarà possibile grazie agli sviluppi degli studi sull’analisi della struttura a larga scala diretti ad estrarre informazione cosmologica dalle funzioni di correlazioni della distribuzione di galassie osservata. Questo è il motivo centrale della mia tesi. In primo luogo, assieme ai miei collaboratori, ho studiato i benefici di un’analisi di massima verosimiglianza che consideri simultaneamente lo spettro di potenza e bispettro delle galassie nello spazio reale in termini dei vincoli estratti sui parametri di bias. In quest’analisi ho sfruttato un set di 300 simulazioni N-body e un insieme ancora più esteso di cataloghi approssimati. Il mio contributo in questo progetto è stato quello di testare diverse opzioni per la definizione del dominio di validità del bispettro rispetto a quelle solitamente utilizzate in letteratura in termini dei vincoli posti sui parametri adottati per descrivere il nostro modello. Successivamente, mi sono dedicato alla stima e analisi dei multipoli del bispettro da survey spettroscopiche di galassie, nello spazio del redshift, facendo particolare attenzione alla loro capacità di migliorare i vincoli sui parametri di bias e cosmologici in analisi di massima verosimiglianza. Per questo progetto, ho adottato le stesse simulazioni utilizzate nell’analisi precedente. Ho realizzato un fit dei multipoli l = 0, 2, 4 del bispettro con un modello tree-level nella teoria delle perturbazioni che dipende dai parametri di bias lineare e non-lineare e dal tasso di crescita delle fluttuazioni di densità della materia. I risultati mostrano che il limite della validità del modello, per un volume totale di circa 1000 Gpc3 h−3, raggiunge un numero d’onda massimo di 0.08 Mpc h−1 per il monopolo, e di 0.06 and 0.045 Mpc h−1 per il quadrupolo ed exadecapolo. I nostri risultati confermano le previsioni dei precedenti studi presenti in letteratura riguardo i vantaggi associati dall’introduzione del quadrupolo nell’analisi di massima verosimiglianza. Un ultimo, minore contributo è dedicato alla derivazione di un’espressione analitica per il calcolo della convoluzione delle predizioni teoriche del bispettro con la funzione finestra ed allo studio dei vantaggi introdotti dai multipoli del bispettro in un analisi di massima verosimiglianza che consideri i multipoli dello spettro di potenza come riferimento. Future spectroscopic galaxy redshift surveys will observe the Large-Scale Structure (LSS) of the Universe over large volumes with the goal of testing the Standard Cosmological Model with high accuracy. This will be achieved thanks to the developments of LSS studies directed towards the optimisation of the extraction of cosmological information from correlation functions of the observed galaxy distribution. This effort is central to my dissertation. In a first stage, together with my collaborators I investigate the benefit of a power spectrum and bispectrum joint analysis in real space in terms of the improvement, wrt a power spectrum-only study, of parameter posteriors extracted from a likelihood analysis. In doing so, we take advantage of a set of 300 N-body simulations and an even larger set of mock catalogs. In this work I explore different options to define the range the validity of the real-space bispectrum model wrt those usually found in literature, and assess the advantages resulting from the adoption of these definitions in terms of constraints on bias parameters they provide. The main goal of my Ph.D. project is the estimate and analysis of the galaxy bispectrum multipoles in spectroscopic redshift surveys, with a particular focus on their inference power in likelihood analyses. For this project I adopt the same simulations used for the power spectrum and bispectrum joint analysis in real space. We fit measurements of the bispectrum l = 0, 2, 4 multipoles with a tree-level model in perturbation theory that depends on linear and nonlinear bias parameters as well as on the growth rate of density fluctuations. We find that the range of validity of the tree-level model, for the total volume of the N-body simulations, of about 1000 Gpc3 h−3, reaches a maximum wavenumber of 0.08Mpch−1 for the monopole, while it is limited to 0.06 and 0.045 Mpc h−1 respectively for quadrupole and hexadecapole. We confirm results of previous forecast studies saying that the addition of the quadrupole to the analysis allows for significant improvements, specially on f constraints. Finally, we compare our numerical estimate for the covariance with its theoretical prediction in the Gaussian approximation and find the latter to work remarkably well. Eventually I discuss two projects to which I have provided a minor contribution, one dealing with the derivation of an expression to compute the the convolution of bispectrum predictions with the survey window, and the other studying the additional constraining power provided by the redshift space bispectrum multipoles to the power spectrum ones.

13. Teaching machines how to find strongly lensed galaxies in cosmological sky surveys

Abstract

Analyzing gravitationally lensed objects enables a wide range of physical and cosmological applications, such as probing the dark matter content in galaxies and clusters or measuring the Universe's expansion rate. The precision of these applications can be improved drastically with a larger number of lenses. For this reason, finding new strong gravitational lensing systems is crucial. Traditionally, gravitational lenses were found with meticulous visual inspections of imaging datasets. However, the next generation of large-scale imaging surveys will produce such a large amount of data that visual inspection will be unpractical, thus motivating the development of efficient automated detection methods to handle large datasets and improve the accuracy of the different applications. The main topic of this thesis is to develop and improve our lens finding algorithms and to study new strong gravitational lenses in large-scale imaging surveys. The first part of this thesis has been to develop a new tool that allows the production of lens simulations. Deep learning algorithms, particularly convolutional neural networks (CNNs), have recently proven their efficiency in detecting lensing systems. In particular, CNNs can be adapted to find a large variety of lenses at once, making them especially suited to be part of automated detection pipelines. However, convolutional neural networks usually require large sets of images to be trained. Unfortunately, the number of known lenses is at this time too low to constitute a sufficient training set. For this reason, robust and flexible tools to simulate realistic lenses have to be developed to generate training sets. Lens simulations must, however, be as realistic as possible to avoid biases. In this thesis, we propose a simulation tool that enables the production of large sets of realistic lens simulations. This tool has been designed to be flexible and, thus, enables the production of lens simulations with different types of deflectors for any imaging survey. The second part consists in separating the light of a lensed source from the foreground object. Indeed, in some cases, the lens features are hidden by the light of the foreground object and deblending might help to identify the lenses help identify lenses with small image separation and enables photometric redshift measurements or the initialization of lens models. This thesis presents a new data-driven method for deblending strong gravitational lenses based on neural networks. Finally, due to the low occurrence rate of strong lensing, the false positive rate of detection algorithms is still a significant challenge. Therefore, we present different tools that enable the inspection of large sets of candidate images. In addition, evaluating the quality of lens candidates is somewhat subjective since the features that define a lens may differ for different experts. Therefore, we propose a set of grading guidelines that can be used for the subsequent ground-based imaging lens searches in this thesis. The CNN-based classifier, the deblending algorithm, and the simulation and visualization tools are part of an automated lens-finding pipeline. This flexible pipeline can be adapted to future large-scale surveys. We discuss in this thesis its first applications to the Canada-France Imaging Survey and the Dark Energy Survey, which led to the discovery of 133 and 403 high-quality lens candidates, respectively.

Abstract

Integral field spectrographs (IFS) have transformed studies of low-redshift spatially resolved galaxies as they provide simultaneous spectral coverage over contiguous spatial regions. IFS surveys of galaxies have allowed for observations of the spatially varying physical diagnostics of galaxy disks. Though IFS instruments have been traditionally limited to small fields of view (FOV), on the order of 100 square arcseconds, constraining the extent to which IFS studies can map the most nearby galaxies. Small FOV have also restricted IFS studies of large galaxy samples to pre-selected targets. Scaling up the fields of IFS instruments is challenging due to the limited number of spatial elements that can be imaged on a single CCD. To cost effectively scale up IFS capability in order to observe larger fields, the Visible Integral-field Replicable Unit Spectrograph (VIRUS) utilizes massive replication on an unprecedented 100-fold scale to be able to image ∼35,000 fibers over a ∼22 arcminute FOV with a single observation. VIRUS consists of up to 78 replicable units, each with two integral field spectrograph channels. The VIRUS design takes advantage of large-scale replication of simple units to significantly reduce engineering and production costs of building a facility instrument of this scale. With VIRUS being 156 realizations of the same spectrograph and the first to be replicated on this massive scale, I present analysis that uncovers the statistical variations in performance of these units along with an assessment of cost/tolerance trade offs of scaling up instrument capabilities through massively replicated designs. The VIRUS instrument was designed to conduct the Hobby Eberly Telescope Dark Energy Experiment (HETDEX) which intends to build a sample of nearly a million Lyα emitting galaxies (LAEs) from 1.9

Abstract

A new proposed optical-near infrared survey of 5000 square degrees of the South Galactic Cap is presented. To perform it, a new CCD camera of 3 deg2 field of view will be mounted on the Blanco 4m telescope at Cerro Tololo (Chile). The goal of the survey is the measurement of the dark matter and dark energy densities and the determination of the dark energy equation of state. Four independent methods will be used: galaxy clusters counts and distributions, weak gravitational lensing tomography, angular distribution of galaxies and supernovae Ia distances. Abstract

We discuss the potential of a next generation space-borne Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) experiment for studies of extragalactic sources. Our analysis has particular bearing on the definition of the future space project, CORE, that has been submitted in response to ESA's call for a Medium-size mission opportunity as the successor of the Planck satellite. Even though the effective telescope size will be somewhat smaller than that of Planck, CORE will have a considerably better angular resolution at its highest frequencies, since, in contrast with Planck, it will be diffraction limited at all frequencies. The improved resolution implies a considerable decrease of the source confusion, i.e. substantially fainter detection limits. In particular, CORE will detect thousands of strongly lensed high-z galaxies distributed over the full sky. The extreme brightness of these galaxies will make it possible to study them, via follow-up observations, in extraordinary detail. Also, the CORE resolution matches the typical sizes of high-z galaxy proto-clusters much better than the Planck resolution, resulting in a much higher detection efficiency; these objects will be caught in an evolutionary phase beyond the reach of surveys in other wavebands. Furthermore, CORE will provide unique information on the evolution of the star formation in virialized groups and clusters of galaxies up to the highest possible redshifts. Finally, thanks to its very high sensitivity, CORE will detect the polarized emission of thousands of radio sources and, for the first time, of dusty galaxies, at mm and sub-mm wavelengths, respectively.

Abstract

We present a new measurement of the kinematic Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect using data from the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) and the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS). Using 600 square degrees of overlapping sky area, we evaluate the mean pairwise baryon momentum associated with the positions of 50,000 bright galaxies in the BOSS DR11 Large Scale Structure catalog. A non-zero signal arises from the large-scale motions of halos containing the sample galaxies. The data fits an analytical signal model well, with the optical depth to microwave photon scattering as a free parameter determining the overall signal amplitude. We estimate the covariance matrix of the mean pairwise momentum as a function of galaxy separation, using microwave sky simulations, jackknife evaluation, and bootstrap estimates. The most conservative simulation-based errors give signal-to-noise estimates between 3.6 and 4.1 for varying galaxy luminosity cuts. We discuss how the other error determinations can lead to higher signal-to-noise values, and consider the impact of several possible systematic errors. Estimates of the optical depth from the average thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich signal at the sample galaxy positions are broadly consistent with those obtained from the mean pairwise momentum signal., 15 pages, 8 figures, 2 tables

Abstract

We explore the phenomenological consequences of general late-time modifications of gravity in the quasi-static approximation, in the case where cold dark matter is non-minimally coupled to the gravitational sector. Assuming spectroscopic and photometric surveys with configuration parameters similar to those of the Euclid mission, we derive constraints on our effective description from three observables: the galaxy power spectrum in redshift space, tomographic weak-lensing shear power spectrum and the correlation spectrum between the integrated Sachs-Wolfe effect and the galaxy distribution. In particular, with $\Lambda$CDM as fiducial model and a specific choice for the time dependence of our effective functions, we perform a Fisher matrix analysis and find that the unmarginalized $68\%$ CL errors on the parameters describing the modifications of gravity are of order $\sigma\sim10^{-2}$--$10^{-3}$. We also consider two other fiducial models. A nonminimal coupling of CDM enhances the effects of modified gravity and reduces the above statistical errors accordingly. In all cases, we find that the parameters are highly degenerate, which prevents the inversion of the Fisher matrices. The data for 200 objects are made public, including the 100 galaxies of the First Public Data Release (DR1). Data were obtained with the integral-field spectrograph PMAS/PPak mounted on the 3.5 m telescope at the Calar Alto observatory. Two different spectral setups are available for each galaxy, (i) a lowresolution V500 setup covering the wavelength range 3745–7500 Å with a spectral resolution of 6.0 Å (FWHM); and (ii) a medium-resolution V1200 setup covering the wavelength range 3650–4840 Å with a spectral resolution of 2.3 Å (FWHM). The sample covers a redshift range between 0.005 and 0.03, with a wide range of properties in the color–magnitude diagram, stellar mass, ionization conditions, and morphological types. All the cubes in the data release were reduced with the latest pipeline, which includes improved spectrophotometric calibration, spatial registration, and spatial resolution. The spectrophotometric calibration is better than 6% and the median spatial resolution is 200 : 4. Based on cosmic microwave background (CMB) maps from the 2013 Planck Mission data release, this paper presents the detection of the integrated Sachs-Wolfe (ISW) effect, that is, the correlation between the CMB and large-scale evolving gravitational potentials. The significance of detection ranges from 2 to 4σ, depending on which method is used. We investigated three separate approaches, which essentially cover all previous studies, and also break new ground. (i) We correlated the CMB with the Planck reconstructed gravitational lensing potential (for the first time). This detection was made using the lensing-induced bispectrum between the low-â.,> and high-â.,> temperature anisotropies; the correlation between lensing and the ISW effect has a significance close to 2.5σ. (ii) We cross-correlated with tracers of large-scale structure, which yielded a significance of about 3σ, based on a combination of radio (NVSS) and optical (SDSS) data. (iii) We used aperture photometry on stacked CMB fields at the locations of known large-scale structures, which yielded and confirms a 4σ signal, over a broader spectral range, when using a previously explored catalogue, but shows strong discrepancies in amplitude and scale when compared with expectations. More recent catalogues give more moderate results that range from negligible to 2.5σ at most, but have a more consistent scale and amplitude, the latter being still slightly higher than what is expected from numerical simulations within ΛCMD. Where they can be compared, these measurements are compatible with previous work using data from WMAP, where these scales have been mapped to the limits of cosmic variance. Planck's broader frequency coverage allows for better foreground cleaning and confirms that the signal is achromatic, which makes it preferable for ISW detection. As a final step we used tracers of large-scale structure to filter the CMB data, from which we present maps of the ISW temperature perturbation. Abstract

We present new improved constraints on the Hubble parameter H(z) in the redshift range 0.15 < z < 1.1, obtained from the differential spectroscopic evolution of early-type galaxies as a function of redshift. We extract a large sample of early-type galaxies (\sim11000) from several spectroscopic surveys, spanning almost 8 billion years of cosmic lookback time (0.15 < z < 1.42). We select the most massive, red elliptical galaxies, passively evolving and without signature of ongoing star formation. Those galaxies can be used as standard cosmic chronometers, as firstly proposed by Jimenez & Loeb (2002), whose differential age evolution as a function of cosmic time directly probes H(z). We analyze the 4000 �� break (D4000) as a function of redshift, use stellar population synthesis models to theoretically calibrate the dependence of the differential age evolution on the differential D4000, and estimate the Hubble parameter taking into account both statistical and systematical errors. We provide 8 new measurements of H(z) (see Tab. 4), and determine its change in H(z) to a precision of 5-12% mapping homogeneously the redshift range up to z \sim 1.1; for the first time, we place a constraint on H(z) at z \neq 0 with a precision comparable with the one achieved for the Hubble constant (about 5-6% at z \sim 0.2), and covered a redshift range (0.5 < z < 0.8) which is crucial to distinguish many different quintessence cosmologies. These measurements have been tested to best match a ��CDM model, clearly providing a statistically robust indication that the Universe is undergoing an accelerated expansion. This method shows the potentiality to open a new avenue in constrain a variety of alternative cosmologies, especially when future surveys (e.g. Euclid) will open the possibility to extend it up to z \sim 2., 34 pages, 15 figures, 6 tables, published in JCAP. 29. Toward an understanding of the large scale structure of the universe with galaxy surveys

Abstract

Large-scale structures we see in the universe, such as galaxies, galaxy clusters and structures beyond the scale of clusters, result from gravitational instability of almost isotropic and homogeneous density distribution in the early universe. The degree of the initial anisotropy of the universe and the subsequent growth of gravitational instability, coupled with the expansion rate of the universe, determine the scale and abundance of the structures formed in the universe at later times. A galaxy survey directly observes a distribution of structures in the sky using galaxies as a tracer of the underlying density distribution, and yields constraints on cosmological models when compared to a physical theory of structure formation based on a given cosmological model. Among many cosmological and astronomical phenomena to be understood from a galaxy survey, the nature of the observed accelerated expansion of the universe is the most profound problem in the modern physics. Motivated by various planned and on-going galaxy surveys, including our own Hobby-Ebery Telescope Dark Energy eXperiment (HETDEX), we show the way to fully exploit the data from a galaxy survey. We improve a model of structure formation to include the effect of baryonic pressure and the free-streaming of massive neutrinos at a mildly non-linear regime. Future galaxy surveys are to reach the level of accuracy, where the effect of massive neutrinos on the observed power spectrum is no longer negligible. Proper understanding of these effects gives a way to measure the absolute masses of neutrinos: one of the most fundamental particles, which, by itself, will be a major development in the field of particle physics. Yet, most of the space (~80%) observed by galaxy surveys is occupied by voids. An ellipticity probability distribution function of voids offers yet another way of probing cosmology. Especially, a distribution of ellipticities in the redshift space provides a unique way to measure a growth rate of the structure in the universe apart from other cosmological parameters when combined with the galaxy power spectrum.
