Context. We investigate the morphology and resolved physical properties of a sample of 22 IR-selected dusty star-forming galaxies at cosmic noon using the James Webb Space Telescope NIRCam images obtained in the EGS field for the CEERS survey. The exceptional resolution of the NIRCam images allowed us to spatially resolve these galaxies up to 4.4 µm and identify their bulge or core even when very extinguished by dust. Aims. The goal of this study is to obtain a better understanding of the formation and evolution of FIR-bright galaxies by spatially resolving their properties using JWST in order to look through the dust and bridge the gap between the compact FIR sources and the larger optical star-forming galaxies. Methods. Based on red-green-blue images from the F115W, F200W, and F444W filters, we divided each galaxy into several uniformly colored regions, fit their respective SEDs, and measured physical properties. After classifying each region as star forming or quiescent, we assigned galaxies to three classes depending on whether active star formation is located in the core, in the disk, or in both. Results. (i) We find that the galaxies at a higher redshift tend to have a fragmented disk with a low core mass fraction. They are at an early stage of bulge formation. When moving toward a lower redshift, the core mass fraction increases, and the bulge growth is associated with a stabilization of the disk, which translates into less patches and clumps. The NIRCam data clearly point toward bulge formation in preexisting disks. (ii) Lopsidedness is a very common feature of DSFGs. It has been wrongly overlooked for a long time and could have a major impact on the evolution of DSFGs. (iii) Twenty-three percent of the galaxies have a star-forming core embedded in a quiescent disk. They seem to be undergoing outside-in quenching, often facilitated by their strong lopsidedness inducing instabilities. (iv) We show that half of our galaxies with star formation concentrated in their core are good sub-millimeter galaxy near-IR counterpart candidates, demonstrating that compact SMGs are usually surrounded by a larger, less obscured disk. (v) Finally, we found surprising evidence for clump-like substructures being quiescent or residing in quiescent regions. Conclusions. This work demonstrates the major impact JWST/NIRCam has on understanding the complexity of the evolution of distant massive galaxies regarding bulge formation and quenching mechanisms.

The influence of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) on star formation within their host galaxies remains a topic of intense debate. One of the primary challenges in quantifying the star formation rate (SFR) within AGN hosts arises from the prevalent assumption in most methodologies, which attribute gas excitation to young stars alone. However, this assumption does not consider the contribution of the AGN to the ionization of the gas in their environment. To address this issue, we evaluate the use of strong optical emission lines to obtain the SFR surface density (⁠|$\Sigma {{\rm SFR_{AGN}}}$|⁠) in regions predominantly ionized by an AGN, using a sample of 293 AGN hosts from the MaNGA survey, with SFR measurements available through stellar population fitting. We propose calibrations involving the H |$\alpha$| and [O  iii ] |$\lambda$| 5007 emission lines, which can be used to determine |$\Sigma {{\rm SFR_{AGN}}}$|⁠ , resulting in values consistent with those estimated through stellar population fitting. Context. The extended ultraviolet (XUV) disks of nearby galaxies show ongoing massive-star formation, but their parental molecular clouds remain mostly undetected despite searches in CO(1–0) and CO(2–1). The recent detection of 23 clouds in the higher excitation transition CO(3–2) within the XUV disk of M83 thus requires an explanation. Aims. We test the hypothesis introduced to explain the non-detections and recent detection simultaneously: The clouds in XUV disks have a clump-envelope structure similar to those in Galactic star-forming clouds, having dense star-forming clumps (or concentrations of multiple clumps) at their centers, which predominantly contribute to the CO(3–2) emission and are surrounded by less dense envelopes, where CO molecules are photo-dissociated due to the low-metallicity environment there. Methods. We utilize new high-resolution ALMA CO(3–2) observations of a subset (11) of the 23 clouds in the XUV disk of M83. Results. We confirm the compactness of the CO(3–2)-emitting dense clumps (or their concentrations), finding clump diameters below the spatial resolution of 6–9 pc. This is similar to the size of the dense gas region in the Orion A molecular cloud, a local star-forming cloud with massive-star formation. Conclusions. The dense star-forming clumps are common between normal and XUV disks. This may also indicate that once the cloud structure is set, the process of star formation is governed by the cloud's internal physics rather than by external triggers. This simple model explains the current observations of clouds with ongoing massive-star formation, although it may require some adjustment, for example including the effect of cloud evolution, to describe star formation in molecular clouds more generally. Context. Molecular hydrogen (H2) plays a crucial role in the formation and evolution of galaxies, serving as the primary fuel reservoir for star formation. In a metal-enriched Universe, H2 forms mostly through catalysis on interstellar dust grain surfaces. However, due to the complexities of modelling this process, star formation in cosmological simulations often relies on empirical or theoretical frameworks that have only been validated in the local Universe to estimate the abundance of H2. Aims. The goal of this work is to model the connection between the processes of star, dust, and H2 formation in our cosmological simulations. Methods. Building upon our recent integration of a dust evolution model into the star formation and feedback model MUPPI, we included the formation of molecular hydrogen on the surfaces of dust grains. We also accounted for the destruction of molecules and their shielding from harmful radiation. Results. The model reproduces, reasonably well, the main statistical properties of the observed galaxy population for the stellar, dust, and H2 components. The evolution of the molecular hydrogen cosmic density (ρH2) in our simulated boxes peaks around redshift z = 1.5, consistent with observations. Following its peak, ρH2 decreases by a factor of two towards z = 0, which is a milder evolution than observed. Similarly, the evolution of the molecular hydrogen mass function since z = 2 displays a gentler evolution when compared to observations. Our model recovers satisfactorily the integrated molecular Kennicut-Schmidt (mKS) law between the surface star formation rate (ΣSFR) and surface H2 density (ΣH2) at z = 0. This relationship is already evident at z = 2, albeit with a higher normalization. We find hints of a broken power law with a steeper slope at higher ΣH2. We also study the H2-to-dust mass ratio in galaxies as a function of their gas metallicity and stellar mass, observing a decreasing trend with respect to both quantities. The H2-to-dust mass fraction for the global population of galaxies is higher at higher redshift. The analysis of the atomic-to-molecular transition on a particle-by-particle basis suggests that gas metallicity cannot reliably substitute the dust-to-gas ratio in models attempting to simulate dust-promoted H2. The extraplanar diffuse ionised gas (eDIG) is a key component for understanding the feedback processes that connect galactic discs and their halos. In this paper, we present the second study of the Bidimensional Exploration of the warm-Temperature Ionised Gas (BETIS) project, the aim of which is to explore the possible ionisation mechanisms and characteristics of the eDIG. We use a sample of eight edge-on galaxies observed with the Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) integral field spectrograph (IFS) and apply the methodology developed in the first paper of the BETIS project for obtaining binned emission line maps. We find that the vertical and radial profiles of the [N II]/Hα, [S II]/Hα, [O III]/Hβ, and [O I]/Hα ratios depict a complex ionisation structure within galactic halos – which is influenced by the spatial distribution of H II regions across the galactic plane as observed from our line of sight–, with Lyman continuum photon leakage from OB associations constituting the main ionisation source. Moreover, the electron temperature and S+/S ionisation ratio also exhibit a dependency on the distribution of H II regions within the galactic discs. Our analysis excludes low-mass, hot, and evolved stars (HOLMES) as viable candidates for secondary ionisation sources to elucidate the unusual behaviour of the line ratios at greater distances from the galactic midplane. In contrast, we ascertain that shocks induced in the interstellar medium by star formation(SF)-related feedback mechanisms represent a promising secondary ionisation source of the eDIG. We present a suite of models integrating ionisation mechanisms arising from fast shocks and photoionisation associated with star formation. When applied to the classical Baldwin–Phillips–Terlevich (BPT) diagrams, these models reveal that the ionisation budget of the eDIG ranges from 20% to 50% across our sample, with local variations of up to 20% within individual galaxy halos. This contribution correlates with the presence of filaments and other structural components observed within galaxy halos. The presence of shocks is additionally supported by the observation of a high density of high [O I]/Hα ratios, which is characteristic of shock-compressed ionised gas, and is likely induced by feedback from regions of intense SF within the galactic disc. Resolved studies of the correlation between the radio and far-infrared (FIR) emission from galaxies at different frequencies can unveil the interplay between star formation and the relativistic interstellar medium (ISM). Thanks to the LOFAR LoTSS observations combined with VLA, Herschel, and WISE data, we study the role of cosmic rays and magnetic fields in the radio–FIR correlation on scales of ≳200 pc in the nearby galaxy IC 342. The thermal emission traced by the 22 μm emission, constitutes about 6%, 13%, and 30% of the observed radio emission at 0.14, 1.4, and 4.8 GHz, respectively, in star-forming regions and less in other parts. The nonthermal spectral index becomes flatter at frequencies lower than 1.4 GHz (αn = −0.51 ± 0.09, Sν ∝ ναn) than between 1.4 and 4.8 GHz (αn = −1.06 ± 0.19) on average, and this flattening occurs not only in star-forming regions but also in the diffuse ISM. The radio–FIR correlation holds at all radio frequencies; however, it is tighter at higher radio frequencies. A multi-scale analysis shows that this correlation cannot be maintained on small scales due to diffusion of cosmic ray electrons (CREs). The correlation breaks at a larger scale (≃320 pc) at 0.14 GHz than at 1.4 GHz (≃200 pc), indicating that the CREs traced at lower frequencies have diffused a longer path in the ISM. We find that the energy index of CREs becomes flatter in star-forming regions, in agreement with previous studies. Cooling of CREs due to the magnetic field is evident globally only after compensating for the effect of star formation activity that both accelerates CREs and amplifies magnetic fields. Compared with other nearby galaxies, we show that the smallest scale of the radio–FIR correlation is proportional to the propagation length of the CREs on which the ordered magnetic field has an important effect. Context. The ionization of diffuse gas located far above the energetic midplane OB stars poses a challenge to the commonly accepted notion that radiation from OB stars is the primary ionization source for gas in galaxies. Aims. We investigated the sources of ionizing radiation, specifically leaking midplane H II regions and/or in situ hot low-mass evolved stars (HOLMES), in extraplanar diffuse ionized gas (eDIG) in a sample of eight nearby (17−52 Mpc) edge-on disk galaxies observed with the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE). Methods. We constructed a model for the photoionization of eDIG clouds and the propagation of ionizing radiation through the eDIG using subsequent runs of CLOUDY photoionization code. Our model includes radiation originating both from midplane OB stars and in situ evolved stars and its dilution and processing as it propagates in the eDIG. Results. We fit the model to the data using the vertical line ratio profiles of our sample galaxies, and find that while the ionization by in situ evolved stars is insignificant for most of the galaxies in our sample, it may be able to explain the enhanced high-ionization lines in the eDIG of the green valley galaxy ESO 544−27. Our results show that while leaking radiation from midplane H II regions is the primary ionization source for eDIG, in situ evolved stars can play a significant part in ionizing extraplanar gas in galaxies with low star forming rates. Context. It is now well known that certain massive galaxies undergo enormous enhancements in their star formation rate (SFR) when they undergo major mergers. These enhancements can be as high as 100 times the SFR of unperturbed galaxies of the same stellar mass. Previous works have found that the size of this boost in star formation (SF) is related to the morphology of and the proximity to the companion. The same trend has also been observed for the fraction of active galactic nuclei (AGN), where galaxies that are closer together tend to have higher AGN fractions. Aims. We aim to analyse the SF enhancement and AGN fraction evolution during the merger process by using a more timeline-like merger sequence. Additionally, we aim to determine the relation between the SF enhancement in mergers and the morphology of the galaxies involved. Methods. Taking advantage of the stellar masses (M*) and SFRs of the ∼600 nearby isolated mergers obtained in our previous study, we calculated the distance of each of our galaxies from the star-forming main sequence (MS; specific SFR (sSFR)/sSFRMS), which werefer to as the SF mode. We then analysed how the SF mode varies during the merger process as a function of morphology and M*. Additionally, we analysed the AGN content of our mergers, using multiple diagnostics based on emission line ratios and WISE colours. Results. We observed that, overall, merging galaxies show an SF mode that is governed by their morphology. Spirals typically show high SF mode values, while highly disturbed (HD) galaxies are generally even more enhanced (median values of +0.8 dex and +1.08 dex above the MS, respectively). In contrast, elliptical and lenticular galaxies show the lowest SF modes, as expected. However, even they show SF enhancement compared to their unperturbed counterparts. For example, their median SF mode is just within the 1-sigma scatter of the MS, and this can occur even before the galaxies have coalesced. We observed a trend for the SF mode to gradually increase with increasing merger stage. We did not find a clear dependency of the observed AGN fraction on the merger stage for the majority of our classification methods. Conclusions. We find mergers can significantly enhance SF in galaxies of all morphologies. For early-type galaxies, this could suggest that some gas was present prior to the merger, which may be triggered to form stars by the tidal interaction. As the SF enhancement continues throughout the merger process, this suggests that the enhancement may be a long-lived event, contrary to the short starbursts seen in some models. We present a new determination of the star-forming main sequence (MS), obtained through stacking 100k K-band-selected galaxies in the far-infrared (FIR) Herschel and James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) imaging. By fitting the dust emission curve to the stacked FIR photometry, we derive the IR luminosities (LIR), and hence the star formation rates (SFRs) out to z ≲ 5.7. The functional form of the MS is found, with the linear SFR-M* relation that flattens at high stellar masses and the normalization that increases exponentially with redshift. We derive the corresponding redshift evolution of the specific star formation rate (sSFR) and compare our findings with the recent literature. We find our MS to be exhibiting slightly lower normalization at z ≲ 2 and to flatten at somewhat larger stellar masses at high redshifts. By deriving the relationship between the peak dust temperature (Td) and redshift, where Td increases linearly from ∼20 K at z = 0.5 to ∼50 K at z = 5, we conclude that the apparent inconsistencies in the shapes of the MS are most likely caused by the different dust temperatures assumed when deriving SFRs in the absence of FIR data. Finally, we investigate the derived shape of the star-forming MS by simulating the time evolution of the observed galaxy stellar mass function (GSMF). While the simulated GSMF is in good agreement with the observed one, some inconsistencies persist. In particular, we find the simulated GSMF to be slightly overpredicting the number density of low-mass galaxies at z ≳ 2. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context. Compact star-forming galaxies were dominant galaxy types in the early Universe. Blueberry galaxies (BBs) represent their local analogues, being very compact and having intense star formation. Aims. Motivated by high X-ray emission recently found in other analogical dwarf galaxies, called Green Peas, we probed the X-ray properties of BBs to determine if their X-ray emission is consistent with the empirical laws for star-forming galaxies. Methods. We performed the first X-ray observations of a small sample of BBs with the XMM-Newton satellite. Spectral analysis for detected sources and upper limits measured via Bayesian-based analysis for very low-count measurements were used to determine the X-ray properties of our galaxy sample. Results. Clear detection was obtained for only two sources, with one source exhibiting an enhanced X-ray luminosity to the scaling relations. For the remaining five sources, only an upper limit was constrained, suggesting BBs to be rather underluminous as a whole. Our analysis shows that the large scatter cannot be easily explained by the stochasticity effects. While the bright source is above (and inconsistent with) the expected distribution at almost the 99% confidence level, the upper limits of the two sources are below the expected distribution. Conclusions. These results indicate that the empirical relations between the star formation rate, metallicity, and X-ray luminosity might not hold for BBs with uniquely high specific star formation rates. One possible explanation could be that the BBs may not be old enough to have a significant X-ray binary population. The high luminosity of the only bright source can then be caused by an additional X-ray source, such as a hidden active galactic nucleus or more extreme ultraluminous X-ray sources. The property of star formation rate (SFR) is tightly connected to the amount of dense gas in molecular clouds. However, it is not fully understood how the relationship between dense molecular gas and star formation varies within galaxies and in different morphological environments. Most previous studies have typically been limited to kiloparsec-scale resolution such that different environments could not be resolved. In this work, we present new ALMA observations of HCN(1−0) at 260 pc scale to test how the amount of dense gas and its ability to form stars varies with environmental properties. Combined with existing CO(2−1) observations from ALMA and Hα from MUSE, we measured the HCN/CO line ratio, a proxy for the dense gas fraction, and SFR/HCN, a proxy for the star formation efficiency of the dense gas. We find a systematic > 1 dex increase (decreases) of HCN/CO (SFR/HCN) towards the centre of the galaxy, and roughly flat trends of these ratios (average variations < 0.3 dex) throughout the disc. While spiral arms, interarm regions, and bar ends show similar HCN/CO and SFR/HCN, on the bar, there is a significantly lower SFR/HCN at a similar HCN/CO. The strong environmental influence on dense gas and star formation in the centre of NGC 4321, suggests either that clouds couple strongly to the surrounding pressure or that HCN emission traces more of the bulk molecular gas that is less efficiently converted into stars. Across the disc, where the ISM pressure is typically low, SFR/HCN is more constant, indicating a decoupling of the clouds from their surrounding environment. The low SFR/HCN on the bar suggests that gas dynamics (e.g. shear and streaming motions) can have a large effect on the efficiency with which dense gas is converted into stars. In addition, we show that HCN/CO is a good predictor of the mean molecular gas surface density at 260 pc scales across environments and physical conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We examine the prevalence of truncated star-forming discs in the Virgo cluster down to M* ≃ 107 M⊙. This work makes use of deep, high-resolution imaging in the Hα+[N II] narrow-band from the Virgo Environmental Survey Tracing Ionised Gas Emission (VESTIGE) and optical imaging from the Next Generation Virgo Survey (NGVS). To aid in the understanding of the effects of the cluster environment on star formation in Virgo galaxies, we take a physically motivated approach to define the edge of the star-forming disc via a drop-off in the radial specific star formation rate profile. A comparison with the expected sizes of normal galactic discs provides a measure of how truncated star-forming discs are in the cluster. We find that truncated star-forming discs are nearly ubiquitous across all regions of the Virgo cluster, including beyond the virial radius (0.974 Mpc). The majority of truncated discs at large cluster-centric radii are of galaxies likely on their first infall. As the intra-cluster medium density is low in this region, it is difficult to explain this population with solely ram-pressure stripping. A plausible explanation is that these galaxies are undergoing starvation of their gas supply before ram-pressure stripping becomes the dominant quenching mechanism. A simple model of starvation shows that this mechanism can produce moderate disc truncations within 1−2 Gyr. This model is consistent with 'slow-then-rapid' or 'delayed-then-rapid' quenching, whereby the early starvation mode drives disc truncations without significant change to the integrated star formation rate, and the later ram-pressure stripping mode rapidly quenches the galaxy. The origin of starvation may be in the group structures that exist around the main Virgo cluster, which indicates the importance of understanding pre-processing of galaxies beyond the cluster virial radius. The pace at which galaxies grew into their current stellar masses and how this growth is regulated is still not fully understood, nor is the role that morphology plays in this process. We applied full spectral fitting techniques with pyPipe3D to the MaNGA sample to obtain its star formation and stellar mass histories and used these to investigate the mass assembly of galaxies by measuring how their specific star formation correlates to their stellar mass at different look-back times. We find that the correlation between these two parameters was shallower in the past. Galaxies used to have similar mass doubling times and the current negative correlation between the specific star formation and M* is primarily due to more massive galaxies 'dropping' off the main sequence earlier than less massive ones. Additionally, selecting the galaxies into bins based on their present-day morphology shows a segregation in specific star formation rate (sSFR) that is maintained even at high look-back times, showing that the factors that determine which morphology a galaxy ends up in are in place at very early times. Similarly, selecting them based on their current star formation status shows that, on average, currently retired galaxies used to have slightly a higher sSFR before the drop-off, whereas galaxies that have continued to form stars until today had a lower sSFR initially. We compare our results to a set of cosmic surveys, finding partial agreement in our results with several of them, though with significant offsets in redshift. The initial mass–radius relation of embedded star clusters is an essential boundary condition for understanding the evolution of embedded clusters in which stars form to their release into the galactic field via an open star cluster phase. The initial mass–radius relation of embedded clusters deduced by Marks & Kroupa (2012, A&A, 543, A8) is significantly different from the relation suggested by Pfalzner et al. (2016, A&A, 586, A68). Here, we use direct N-body simulations to model the early expansion of embedded clusters after the expulsion of their residual gas. The observationally deduced radii of clusters up to a few million years old, compiled from various sources, are well fitted by N-body models, implying that these observed very young clusters are most likely in an expanding state. We show that the mass–radius relation of Pfalzner et al. (2016) reflects the expansion of embedded clusters following the initial mass–radius relation of Marks & Kroupa (2012). We also suggest that even the embedded clusters in ATLASGAL clumps with HII regions are probably already in expansion. All the clusters collected here from different observations show a mass-radius relation with a similar slope, which may indicate that all clusters were born with a profile resembling that of the Plummer phase-space distribution function. This study examines the limitations of H |$\alpha$| luminosity as a tracer of star formation rates (SFR) in spatially resolved observations. We carry out high-resolution simulations of a Milky Way-like galaxy including both supernova and photoionization feedback, and from these, we generate synthetic H |$\alpha$| emission maps that we compare to maps of the true distribution of young stellar objects (YSOs) on scales from whole-galaxy to individual molecular clouds (⁠|$\lesssim 100$| pc). Our results reveal significant spatial mismatches between H |$\alpha$| and true YSO maps on sub-100 pc scales, primarily due to ionizing photon leakage, with a secondary contribution from young stars drifting away from their parent molecular clouds. On small scales, these effects contribute significantly to the observed anticorrelation between gas and star formation, such that there is |$\sim 50~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| less anticorrelation if we replace an H |$\alpha$| -based star formation map with a YSO-based one; this in turn implies that previous studies have underestimated the time it takes for young stars to disperse their parent molecular clouds. However, these effects are limited in dense regions with hydrogen columns |$N_\mathrm{H} \gt 3 \times 10^{21}$| cm |$^{-2}$|⁠ , where the H |$\alpha$| - and YSO-based SFR maps show better agreement. Based on this finding, we propose a calibration model that can precisely measure the SFR of large molecular clouds (mean radius > 100 pc) with a combination of H |$\alpha$| and CO observations, which provides a foundation for future study of star formation processes in extragalactic molecular clouds. Interaction between galaxies plays a pivotal role in their evolution. Ongoing star formation in spiral galaxies can be affected by these processes. Interacting galaxy pairs provide an opportunity to study these effects. We select a sample of interacting galaxies in field environments at various interaction stages and are nearly face-on and chose galaxy pairs NGC 2207/IC 2163, NGC 4017/4016 (ARP 305), and NGC 7753/7752 (ARP 86). We use the UltraViolet Imaging Telescope (UVIT) onboard AstroSat to characterize the star-forming regions in the galaxy with a superior resolution of |$\mathrm{\sim 1.4\,\,\mathrm{ arcsec}}$|⁠. We identified and characterized star-forming regions in the UVIT images of the sample and correlated them with the neutral hydrogen (H  i) distribution. We detected localized regions of enhancement in star formation surface density (⁠|$\mathrm{\Sigma _{SFR}}$|⁠) and distortions in the sample of galaxies. We found this consistent with the distribution of H  i in the galaxy. These are possible evidence of past and ongoing interactions affecting the star formation properties in the galaxies. We then conducted a study to understand whether the observed enhancements hold true for a wider sample of interacting galaxies. We observe a moderate enhancement in the star formation rate (SFR) with the interaction class, with a maximum of 1.8 being in the merger class of galaxies. We studied the SFR enhancement for the main galaxies in our sample as a function of pair mass ratio and pair separation. We observe a strong anticorrelation between the SFR enhancement and pair mass ratio and no linear correlation between the enhancement and pair separation. This suggests that the enhancement in interaction-induced star formation may be more strongly influenced by the pair mass ratios, rather than the pair separation. Cloud–cloud collisions in splash bridges produced in gas-rich disc galaxy collisions offer a brief but interesting environment to study the effects of shocks and turbulence on star formation rates in the diffuse intergalactic medium, far from the significant feedback effects of massive star formation and active galactic nucleus. Expanding on our earlier work, we describe simulated collisions between counter-rotating disc galaxies of relatively similar mass, focusing on the thermal and kinematic effects of relative inclination and disc offset at the closest approach. This includes essential heating and cooling signatures, which go some way towards explaining the luminous power in H |$_2$| and [C  ii ] emission in the Taffy bridge, as well as providing a partial explanation of the turbulent nature of the recently observed compact CO-emitting clouds observed in Taffy by the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA). The models show counter-rotating disc collisions result in swirling, shearing kinematics for the gas in much of the post-collision bridge. Gas with little specific angular momentum due to collisions between counter-rotating streams accumulates near the centre of mass. The disturbances and mixing in the bridge drive continuing cloud collisions, differential shock heating, and cooling throughout. A wide range of relative gas phases and line-of-sight velocity distributions are found in the bridges, depending sensitively on initial disc orientations, and the resulting variety of cloud collision histories. Most cloud collisions can occur promptly or persist for quite a long duration. Cold and hot phases can largely overlap throughout the bridge or can be separated into different parts of the bridge. We present a new method to determine the star formation rate density (SFRD) of the Universe at |$z \gtrsim 5$| that includes the contribution of dust-obscured star formation. For this purpose, we use a [C  ii ] (158 |$\mu$| m) selected sample of galaxies serendipitously identified in the fields of known |$z\gtrsim 4.5$| objects to characterise the fraction of obscured star formation rate (SFR). The advantage of a [C  ii ] selection is that our sample is SFR-selected, in contrast to an ultraviolet (UV)-selection that would be biased towards unobscured star formation. We obtain a sample of 23 [C  ii ] emitters near star-forming (SF) galaxies and quasi-stellar objects (QSOs) – three of which we identify for the first time – using previous literature and archival Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array data. 18 of these serendipitously identified galaxies have sufficiently deep rest-UV data and are used to characterise the obscured fraction of the star formation in galaxies with SFRs |$\gtrsim 30\ \text{M}_{\odot } \ \text{yr}^{-1}$|⁠. We find that [C  ii ] emitters identified around SF galaxies have |$\approx$| 63 per cent of their SFR obscured, while [C  ii ] emitters around QSOs have |$\approx$| 93 per cent of their SFR obscured. By forward modelling existing wide-area UV luminosity function (LF) determinations, we derive the intrinsic UV LF using our characterisation of the obscured SFR. Integrating the intrinsic LF to |$M_{\mathrm{ UV}}$| = |$-$| 20, we find that the obscured SFRD contributes to |$\gt 3~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| and |$\gt 10~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| of the total SFRD at |$z \sim 5$| and |$z \sim 6$| based on our sample of companions galaxies near SF galaxies and QSOs, respectively. Our results suggest that dust obscuration is not negligible at |$z\gtrsim 5$|⁠ , further underlining the importance of far-infrared observations of the |$z\gtrsim 5$| Universe. Relic galaxies, the oldest ultra-compact massive galaxies (UCMGs), contain almost exclusively 'pristine' stars formed during an intense star formation (SF) burst at high redshift. As such, they allow us to study in detail the early mechanism of galaxy assembly in the Universe. Using the largest catalogue of spectroscopically confirmed UCMGs for which a degree of relicness (DoR) had been estimated, the INSPIRE catalogue, we investigate whether or not relics prefer dense environments. The objective of this study is to determine if the DoR, which measures how extreme the SF history was, and the surrounding environment are correlated. In order to achieve this goal, we employ the AMICO galaxy cluster catalogue to compute the probability for a galaxy to be a member of a cluster, and measure the local density around each UCMG using machine learning-based photometric redshifts. We find that UCMGs can reside both in clusters and in the field, but objects with very low DoR (⁠|$\lt 0.3$|⁠ , i.e. a relatively extended SF history) prefer underdense environments. We additionally report a correlation between the DoR and the distance from the cluster centre: more extreme relics, when located in clusters, tend to occupy the more central regions of them. We use high-resolution magnetohydrodynamic simulations of isolated disc galaxies to investigate the co-evolution of magnetic fields with a self-regulated, star-forming interstellar medium (ISM). The simulations are conducted using the ramses adaptive mesh refinement code on the standard agora initial condition, with gas cooling, star formation, and feedback. We run galaxies with a variety of initial magnetic field strengths. The fields evolve and achieve approximate saturation within 500 Myr, but at different levels. The galaxies reach a quasi-steady state, with slowly declining star formation due to both gas consumption and increase in the field strength at intermediate ISM densities. We connect this behaviour to differences in the gas properties and overall structure of the galaxies. Stronger magnetic fields limit supernova bubble sizes. Different cases support the ISM using varying combinations of magnetic pressure, turbulence, and thermal energy. Initially, |$\gtrsim\!\! 1\ \mu \mathrm{ G}$| magnetic fields evolve modestly and dominate support at all radii. Conversely, initially weaker fields grow through feedback and turbulence but never dominate the support. This is reflected in the stability of the gas disc. This interplay determines the overall distribution of star formation in each case. We conclude that an initially weak field can grow to produce a realistic model of a local disc galaxy, but starting with typically assumed field strengths (⁠|$\gtrsim\!\! 1\ \mu \mathrm{ G}$|⁠) will not. We present an analysis of 152 355 radio sources identified in the second data release of the LOFAR Two Metre Sky Survey (LoTSS-DR2) with Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) spectroscopic redshifts in the range |$0.00 \lt z \lt 0.57$|⁠. Using Monte Carlo simulations, we determine the reliability of each source exhibiting an excess in radio luminosity relative to that predicted from their H |$\alpha$| emission, and, for a subset of 124 023 sources we combine this measurement with a full BPT analysis. Using these two independent diagnostics, we determine the reliability of each source hosting a supermassive black hole of high or low Eddington-scaled accretion rate, and combine the measurements to determine the reliability of sources belonging to each of four physical classes of objects: star-forming galaxies (SFGs), radio-quiet active galactic nuclei (RQAGN), and high- or low-excitation radio galaxies (HERGs or emission-line LERGs). The result is a catalogue that enables user-defined samples of radio sources with a reliability threshold suited to their science goal, for example prioritizing purity or completeness. Here, we select high-confidence samples of radio sources (>90 per cent reliability) to report: 38 588 radio-excess AGNs in the LoTSS-DR2 sample (362 HERGs, and 12 648 emission-line LERGs), together with 38 729 SFGs, and 18 726 RQAGN. We validate these results through comparison to literature using independent emission-line measurements, and to widely adopted WISE photometric selection techniques. While our use of SDSS spectroscopy limits our current analysis to |$\sim 4$|  per cent of the LoTSS-DR2 catalogue, our method is directly applicable to data from the forthcoming WEAVE-LOFAR survey, which will obtain over a million spectra of 144 MHz selected sources. We use high-resolution (⁠|$\simeq$| 35pc) hydrodynamical simulations of galaxy formation to investigate the relation between gas accretion and star formation in galaxies hosted by dark matter haloes of mass |$10^{12}$| |${{\mathrm{M}}_{\odot }}$| at |$z = 2$|⁠. At high-redshift, cold-accreted gas is expected to be readily available for star formation, while gas accreted in a hot mode is expected to require a longer time to cool down before being able to form stars. Contrary to these expectations, we find that the majority of cold-accreted gas takes several hundred Myr longer to form stars than hot-accreted gas after it reaches the inner circumgalactic medium (CGM). Approximately 10 per cent of the cold-accreted gas flows rapidly through the inner CGM on to the galactic disc. The remaining 90 per cent is trapped in a turbulent accretion region that extends up to |$\sim 50$|  per cent of the virial radius, from which it takes several hundred Myr for the gas to be transported to the star-forming disc. In contrast, most hot shock-heated gas avoids this 'slow track', and accretes directly from the CGM on to the disc where stars can form. We find that shock-heating of cold gas after accretion in the inner CGM and supernova-driven outflows contribute to, but do not fully explain, the delay in star formation. These processes combined slow down the delivery of cold-accreted gas to the galactic disc and consequently limit the rate of star formation in Milky Way mass galaxies at |$z \gt 2$|⁠. We decomposed the molecular gas in the spiral galaxy NGC 628 (M74) into multiscale hub-filament structures using the CO (2 |$-$| 1) line by the dendrogram algorithm. All leaf structures as potential hubs were classified into three categories, i.e. leaf-HFs-A, leaf-HFs-B and leaf-HFs-C. Leaf-HFs-A exhibit the best hub-filament morphology, which also have the highest density contrast, the largest mass and the lowest virial ratio. We employed the filfinder algorithm to identify and characterize filaments within 185 leaf-HFs-A structures, and fitted the velocity gradients around the intensity peaks. Measurements of velocity gradients provide evidence for gas inflow within these structures, which can serve as a kinematic evidence that these structures are hub-filament structures. The numbers of the associated 21 μ m and H α structures and the peak intensities of 7.7 μ m, 21 μ m, and H α emissions decrease from leaf-HFs-A to leaf-HFs-C. The spatial separations between the intensity peaks of CO and 21 μ m structures of leaf-HFs-A are larger than those of leaf-HFs-C. These evidence indicate that leaf-HFs-A are more evolved than leaf-HFs-C. There may be an evolutionary sequence from leaf-HFs-C to leaf-HFs-A. Currently, leaf-HFs-C lack a distinct gravitational collapse process that would result in a significant density contrast. The density contrast can effectively measure the extent of the gravitational collapse and the depth of the gravitational potential of the structure which, in turn, shapes the hub-filament morphology. Combined with the kinematic analysis presented in previous studies, a picture emerges that molecular gas in spiral galaxies is organized into network structures through the gravitational coupling of multiscale hub-filament structures. Observations of ionized H  |$\alpha$| gas in high-redshift disc galaxies have ubiquitously found significant line broadening, |$\sigma _{\rm H\,\alpha }\sim 10{\!-\!}100\, {\rm km\, s^{-1}}$|⁠. To understand whether this broadening reflects gas turbulence within the interstellar medium (ISM) of galactic discs, or arises from out-of-plane emission in mass-loaded outflows, we perform radiation hydrodynamic simulations of isolated Milky Way-mass disc galaxies in a gas-poor (low-redshift) and gas rich (high-redshift) condition and create mock H  |$\alpha$| emission line profiles. We find that the majority of the total (integrated) |${\rm H\,\alpha }$| emission is confined within the ISM, with extraplanar gas contributing |${\sim} 45~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| of the extended profile wings (⁠|$v_z\ge 200$| |${\, \rm {km\, s^{-1}} }$|⁠) in the gas-rich galaxy. This substantiates using the |${\rm H\,\alpha }$| emission line as a tracer of mid-plane disc dynamics. We investigate the relative contribution of diffuse and dense |${\rm H\,\alpha }$| emitting gas, corresponding to diffuse ionized gas (DIG; |$\rho \lesssim 0.1\, {\rm cm^{-3}}$|⁠ , |$T\sim 8\, 000$|  K) and H  ii regions (⁠|$\rho \gtrsim 10\, {\rm cm^{-3}}$|⁠ , |$T\sim 10\, 000$|  K), respectively, and find that DIG contributes |$f_{\rm DIG}\lesssim 10~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| of the total L |$_{\rm H\alpha }$|⁠. However, the DIG can reach upwards of |$\sigma _{\rm H\,\alpha } \sim 60{\!-\!}80\, {\rm km\, s^{-1}}$| while the H  ii regions are much less turbulent |$\sigma _{\rm H\,\alpha }\sim 10{\!-\!}40\, {\rm km\, s^{-1}}$|⁠. This implies that the |$\sigma _{\rm H\,\alpha }$| observed using the full |${\rm H\,\alpha }$| emission line is dependent on the relative |${\rm H\,\alpha }$| contribution from DIG/H  ii regions and a larger |$f_{\rm DIG}$| would shift |$\sigma _{\rm H\,\alpha }$| to higher values. Finally, we show that |$\sigma _{\rm H\,\alpha }$| evolves, in both the DIG and H  ii regions, with the galaxy gas fraction. Our high-redshift equivalent galaxy is roughly twice as turbulent, except for in the DIG which has a more shallow evolution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Using several variants of the cosmological simba simulations, we investigate the impact of different feedback prescriptions on the cosmic star formation history. Adopting a global-to-local approach, we link signatures seen in global observables, such as the star formation rate density (SFRD) and the galaxy stellar mass function (GSMF), to feedback effects in individual galaxies. We find a consistent picture: stellar feedback mainly suppresses star formation below halo masses of |$M_{\rm H} = 10^{12} \rm \, {\rm M}_{\odot }$| and before |$z = 2$|⁠ , whereas AGN feedback quenches the more massive systems after |$z = 2$|⁠. Among simba 's AGN feedback modes, AGN jets are the dominant quenching mechanism and set the shape of the SFRD and the GSMF at late times. AGN-powered winds only suppress the star formation rate in intermediate-mass galaxies (⁠|$M_{\rm \star } = 10^{9.5 - 10} \rm \, {\rm M}_{\odot }$|⁠), without affecting the overall stellar mass-assembly significantly. At late times, the AGN X-ray feedback mode mainly quenches residual star formation in massive galaxies. Our analysis reveals that this mode is also necessary to produce the first fully quenched galaxies before |$z=2$|⁠ , where the jets alone are inefficient. These initially highly star-forming galaxies contain relatively large black holes, likely strengthening the X-ray-powered heating and ejection of gas from the dense, central region of galaxies. Such extra heating source quenches the local star formation and produces a more variable accretion rate. More generally, this effect also causes the break down of correlations between the specific star formation rate, the accretion rate and the black hole mass. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We follow up emission line galaxies identified through the near-infrared slitless HST /WFC3 WISP survey with VLT/FORS2 optical spectroscopy. Over 4 WISP fields, we targeted 85 of 138 line emission objects at |$0.4\lt z\lt 2$| identified in WFC3 spectroscopy. Half the galaxies are fainter than |$H_{AB}=24$|  mag, and would not have been included in many well-known surveys based on broad-band magnitude selection. We confirm 95 per cent of the initial WFC3 grism redshifts in the 38 cases where we detect lines in FORS2 spectroscopy. However, for targets which exhibited a single emission line in WFC3, up to 65 per cent at |$z\lt 1.28$| did not have expected emission lines detected in FORS2 and hence may be spurious (although this false-detection rate improves to 33 per cent using the latest public WISP emission line catalogue). From the Balmer decrement, the extinction of the WISP galaxies is consistent with |$A($| H  |$\alpha)=1$|  mag. From SED fits to multiband photometry including Spitzer |$3.6\, \mu$| m, we find a median stellar mass of |$\log _{10}(M_\star /{\rm M}_{\odot })=8.94$|⁠. Our emission-line-selected galaxies tend to lie above the star-forming main sequence (i.e. higher specific star formation rates). Using [O  iii ], [O  ii ], and H β lines to derive gas-phase metallicities, we find typically sub-solar metallicities, decreasing with redshift. Our WISP galaxies lie below the |$z=0$| mass–metallicity relation, and galaxies with higher star formation rates tend to have lower metallicity. Finally, we find a strong increase with redshift of the H α rest-frame equivalent width in this emission-line selected sample, with higher |$EW_0$| galaxies having larger [O  iii ]/H β and O32 ratios on average, suggesting lower metallicity or higher ionization parameter in these extreme emission line galaxies. Data from the JWST have revealed an intriguing population of bright galaxies at high redshifts. In this work, we use extreme-value statistics to calculate the distribution [in ultraviolet (UV) magnitude] of the brightest galaxies in the redshift range |$9 \lesssim z \lesssim 16$|⁠. We combine the generalized extreme-value approach with modelling of the galaxy luminosity function. We obtain predictions of the brightest galaxies for a suite of luminosity functions, including the Schechter and double power-law functions, as well as a model parametrized by the stellar formation efficiency |$f_*$|⁠. We find that the JWST data are broadly consistent with |$f_*$| of |$5\!\!-\!\!10{{\ \rm per\, cent}}$|⁠ , and that the brightest galaxy at |$z\sim 16$| will have |$M_{\rm UV}\approx -23.5^{0.8}_{0.4}$|⁠. If |$f_*$| is dependent on halo mass, we predict |$M_{\rm UV}\approx -22.5^{0.5}_{1.5}$| for such an object. We show that extreme-value statistics not only predict the magnitude of the brightest galaxies at high redshifts, but may also be able to distinguish between models of star formation in high-redshift galaxies. We identify a low-metallicity (⁠|$12+\log ({\rm O}/{\rm H})=7.59$|⁠) Ly  |$\alpha$| -emitting galaxy at |$z=5.943$| with evidence of a strong Balmer jump, arising from nebular continuum. While Balmer jumps are sometimes observed in low-redshift star-forming galaxies, this galaxy also exhibits a steep turnover in the UV continuum. Such turnovers are typically attributed to absorption by a damped Ly  |$\alpha$| system (DLA); however, the shape of the turnover and the high observed Ly  |$\alpha$| escape fraction (⁠|$f_{\rm esc,Ly\alpha }~\sim 27~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$|⁠) is also consistent with strong nebular two-photon continuum emission. Modelling the UV turnover with a DLA requires extreme column densities (⁠|$N_{\rm HI}\,\,\gt\,\, 10^{23}$|  cm |$^{-2}$|⁠), and simultaneously explaining the high |$f_{\rm esc,Ly\alpha }$| requires a fine-tuned geometry. In contrast, modelling the spectrum as primarily nebular provides a good fit to both the continuum and emission lines, motivating scenarios in which (a) we are observing only nebular emission or (b) the ionizing source is powering extreme nebular emission that outshines the stellar emission. The nebular-only scenario could arise if the ionizing source has 'turned off' more recently than the recombination time-scale (⁠|$\sim$| 1000 yr), hence we may be catching the object at a very specific time. Alternatively, hot stars with |$T_{\rm eff}\gtrsim 10^5$|  K (e.g. Wolf–Rayet or low-metallicity massive stars) produce enough ionizing photons such that the two-photon emission becomes visible. While several stellar SEDs from the literature fit the observed spectrum well, the hot-star scenario requires that the number of |$\gtrsim 50~{\rm M}_\odot$| stars relative to |$\sim 5\!-\!50~{\rm M}_\odot$| stars is significantly higher than predicted by typical stellar initial mass functions (IMFs). Hydrocarbon dust is one of the dominant components of interstellar dust, which mainly consists of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and aliphatic hydrocarbons. While hydrocarbon dust is thought to be processed in interstellar radiation fields or shocks, detailed processing mechanisms are not completely understood yet. We investigate the processing of hydrocarbon dust by analyzing the relation between the luminosities emitted by hydrocarbon dust and the total infrared luminosities |$(L_{\mathrm{IR}})$| for 138 star-forming galaxies at redshift |$z \lt 0.3$|⁠. Using near-infrared 2.5–5 |$\, \mu {\rm m}$| spectra obtained with AKARI, we derived the luminosities of the aromatic hydrocarbon feature at 3.3 |$\, \mu {\rm m}$| (⁠|$L_\mathrm{aromatic}$|⁠) and the aliphatic hydrocarbon feature at 3.4–3.6 |$\, \mu {\rm m}$| (⁠|$L_\mathrm{aliphatic}$|⁠). We also derived |$L_\mathrm{IR}$| and the radiation field strength by modeling the spectral energy distributions of the 138 galaxies with AKARI, WISE, and IRAS photometry data. We find that galaxies with higher |$L_\mathrm{IR}$| tend to exhibit lower |$L_\mathrm{aliphatic}/L_\mathrm{aromatic}$| ratios. Furthermore, we find that there is an anti-correlation between |$L_\mathrm{aliphatic}/L_\mathrm{aromatic}$| ratios and the radiation field strength, and also that the galaxies with low |$L_\mathrm{aliphatic}/L_\mathrm{aromatic}$| ratios are dominated by merger galaxies. These results support the suggestion that hydrocarbon dust is processed through photodissociation in strong radiation fields and/or shocks during merging processes of galaxies; the |$L_\mathrm{aliphatic}/L_\mathrm{aromatic}$| ratio is likely to decrease in such harsh interstellar conditions since the aliphatic bonds are known to be chemically weaker than the aromatic bonds. We present an analysis of the galaxy merger rate in the redshift range |$4.0\lt z\lt 9.0$| (i.e. about 1.5 to 0.5 Gyr after the big bang) based on visually identified galaxy mergers from morphological parameter analysis. Our data set is based on high-resolution NIRCam JWST data (a combination of F 150 W and F 2000 W broad-band filters) in the low-to-moderate magnification (⁠|$\mu \lt 2$|⁠) regions of the Abell 2744 cluster field. From a parent set of 675 galaxies |$(M_{U}\in [-26.6,-17.9])$|⁠ , we identify 64 merger candidates from the Gini, |$M_{20}$| and asymmetry morphological parameters, leading to a merger fraction |$f_m=0.11\pm 0.04$|⁠. There is no evidence of redshift evolution of |$f_m$| even at the highest redshift considered, thus extending well into the epoch of reionization the constant trend seen previously at |$z\lesssim 6$|⁠. Furthermore, we investigate any potential redshift-dependent differences in the specific star formation rates between mergers and non-mergers. Our analysis reveals no significant correlation in this regard, with deviations in the studied redshift range typically falling within |$(1-1.5)\sigma$| from the null hypothesis that can be attributed to sample variance and measurement errors. Finally, we also demonstrate that the classification of a merging system is robust with respect to the observed (and equivalently rest frame) wavelength of the high-quality JWST broad-band images used. This preliminary study highlights the potential for progress in quantifying galaxy assembly through mergers during the epoch of reionization, with significant sample size growth expected from upcoming large JWST infrared imaging data sets. Milky Way analogues (MWAs) provide an alternative insight into the various pathways that lead to the formation of disc galaxies with similar properties to the Milky Way (MW). In this study, we explore different selection techniques for identifying MWAs in the Sydney-AAO (Australian Astronomical Observatory) Multi-object Integral field spectrograph (SAMI) Galaxy Survey. We utilize a nearest neighbours method to define MWAs using four selection parameters including stellar mass (⁠|$M_{\star }$|⁠), star formation rate (⁠|$\rm SFR$|⁠), bulge-to-total ratio (⁠|$B/T$|⁠), and disc effective radius (⁠|$R_{\rm {e}}$|⁠). Based on 15 different selection combinations, we find that including |$M_{\star }$| and SFR is essential for minimizing biases in the average MWA properties as compared to the MW. Furthermore, given the MW's smaller than average size, selection combinations without |$R_{\rm {e}}$| result in MWAs being too large. Lastly, we find that |$B/T$| is the least important parameter out of the four tested parameters. Using all four selection criteria, we define the top 10 most MW-like galaxies in the GAMA and Cluster regions of the SAMI survey. These most MW-like galaxies are typically barred spirals, with kinematically cold rotating discs and reside in a wide range of environments. Surprisingly, we find no significant differences between the MWAs selected from the GAMA and Cluster regions. The characteristics of the young stellar population in the nearby irregular galaxy NGC 2366 were investigated. In particular, we focused our attention on its hierarchical clustering distributions and the properties of the stellar groups. This galaxy exhibits a prominent blue helium-burning star feature in the colour-magnitude diagram, suggesting that it has undergone an extended period of stellar formation. The galaxy was observed in two bands by the Hubble Space Telescope covering almost its complete central and intermediate parts, including all the major stellar formation regions. Available photometric data allowed us to select the blue and young stars and, therefore, study the recent stellar formation. Through the path linkage criterion (PLC), we found 23 young star groups and estimated their fundamental parameters, such as their stellar densities, sizes, and number of members. We also performed a fractal substructure analysis to determine the clustering properties of this population, and we built a stellar density map corresponding to the galactic young population. We present an investigation of the L -band emission from known massive young stellar objects in the South African Radio Astronomy Observatory MeerKAT Galactic Plane Survey to search for non-thermal radio emitters in the sample. A total of 398 massive protostars, identified from the Red MSX Source survey, are located within the survey region. Among these, 162 fields that host the protostars are isolated from nearby bright H  ii regions, allowing for the study of any ionized jets present. Seventy-one of these fields have jets with five-sigma detections or higher, corresponding to a detection rate of 44 per cent. The MeerKAT fluxes of the detections, together with the upper limits of the non-detections and any other fluxes from previous observations, were used to estimate the spectral indices of the jets, and to search for the presence of non-thermal radiation. In cases where a source manifests as single in a given observation but is resolved into multiple components in observations of higher resolutions, the sum of the fluxes of the resolved components was used in estimating the indices. Any effects from missing flux in higher resolution observations were incorporated into the index uncertainties. The spectral indices of the sample show that at least 50 per cent of the jets emit non-thermal radiation. Additionally, the spectral energy distribution of some of the sources, as well as their radio luminosities exhibit evidence of non-thermal emission, especially in extended sources. We present the analysis of over 3000 red- Herschel sources (⁠|$S_{\mathrm{250\, \mu m}}\lt S_{\mathrm{350\, \mu m}}\lt S_{\mathrm{500\, \mu m} }$|⁠) using public data from the ALMA archive and the Herschel -ATLAS survey. This represents the largest sample of red- Herschel sources with interferometric follow-up observations to date. The high ALMA angular resolution and sensitivity (⁠|$\theta _{\rm FWHM}\sim$| 1 arcsec; |$\sigma _{1.3\mathrm{\, mm}}\sim 0.17$|  mJy beam |$^{-1}$|⁠) allow us to classify the sample into individual sources, multiple systems, and potential lenses and/or close mergers. Interestingly, even at this high angular resolution, 73 per cent of our detections are single systems, suggesting that most of these galaxies are isolated and/or post-merger galaxies. For the remaining detections, 20 per cent are classified as multiple systems, 5 per cent as lenses and/or mergers, and 2 per cent as low- z galaxies or active galactic nuclei. Combining the Herschel /SPIRE and ALMA photometry, these galaxies are found to be extreme and massive systems with a median star formation rate of |$\sim$| 1500  |$\mathrm{M_{\odot }\, yr^{-1}}$| and molecular gas mass of |$M_{\mathrm{gas}}\sim 10^{11}$|   |$\mathrm{M_{\odot }}$|⁠. The median redshift of individual sources is |$z\approx 2.8$|⁠ , while the likely lensed systems are at |$z\approx 3.3$|⁠ , with redshift distributions extending to |$z\sim 6$|⁠. Our results suggest a common star formation mode for extreme galaxies across cosmic time, likely triggered by close interactions or disc-instabilities, and with short depletion times consistent with the starburst-type population. Moreover, all galaxies with |$S_{\mathrm{1.3mm}}\ge 13$|  mJy are gravitationally amplified which, similar to the established |$S_{500\mathrm{ \, \mu m}}\gt 100$|  mJy threshold, can be used as a simple criterion to identify gravitationally lensed galaxies. Aims. Galaxy interactions can trigger drastic changes in the resolved star-forming properties of their constituents, but it remains unclear as to whether those changes are discernible from secular starburst triggers. In this Letter we investigate whether or not post-merger galaxies create unique star-forming trends on a kiloparsec scale. Methods. We present radial trends in star-formation-rate (SFR) surface density (ΣSFR) for 150 post-merger galaxies with moderate to extremely heightened global SFRs using observations from the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey. We juxtapose these profiles with those of noninteracting galaxies (excluding both galaxy pairs and post-merger galaxies) with similarly enhanced global SFRs. Results. Post-merger galaxies have a much stronger central starburst than isolated galaxies with similar global star-formation enhancements. Indeed, isolated starburst galaxies (SBs) lack a marked central enhancement and instead show a fairly uniform enhancement in ΣSFR with radius. Moreover, the difference in central star formation between post-merger galaxies and noninteracting galaxies is more radially extended and pronounced when the global enhancement in star formation is larger. We conclude that post-merger galaxies create a unique signature in their resolved star-forming properties that is distinct from secular processes that can trigger similar global SFR enhancements. Context. Although dust in galaxies represents only a few percent of the total baryonic mass, it plays a crucial role in the physical processes occurring in galaxies. Studying the dust content of galaxies, particularly at high z, is therefore crucial for understanding the link between dust production, obscured star formation, and the build-up of galaxy stellar mass. Aims. We study the dust properties (mass and temperature) of the largest Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA)-selected sample of star-forming galaxies available from the archive (A3COSMOS), and we derive the dust mass function and dust mass density of galaxies from z = 0.5  −  6. Methods. We fit the spectral energy distribution (SED) with the CIGALE code to constrain the dust mass and temperature of the A3COSMOS galaxy sample based on the UV-to-near-infrared photometric coverage of each galaxy combined with the ALMA (and Herschel when available) coverage of the Rayleigh-Jeans tail of their dust-continuum emission. We then computed and fit the dust mass function by combining the A3COSMOS and the most recent Herschel samples in order to obtain the best estimate of the integrated dust mass density up to z ∼ 6. Results. The dust masses in galaxies in A3COSMOS lie between ∼108 and ∼109.5 M⊙. From the SED fitting, we were also able to derive a dust temperature. The distribution of the dust temperature peaks at ∼30 − 35 K. The dust mass function at z = 0.5  −  6 evolves with an increase in M* and a decrease in the number density (Φ*), and it agrees well with literature estimates. The dust mass density decreases smoothly in its evolution from z ∼ 0.5 to z ∼ 6, which is steeper than what is found by models at z ≳ 2. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present the first observations of HCO+(1–0) and HCN(1–0) emission in the northern filaments of Centaurus A with ALMA. HCO+(1–0) is detected in nine clumps of the Horseshoe complex, with similar velocities as the CO(1–0) emission. Conversely, HCN(1–0) is not detected, and we derive upper limits on the flux. At a resolution of ∼40 pc, the line ratio of the velocity-integrated intensities IHCO+/ICO varies between 0.03 and 0.08, while IHCO+/IHCN is higher than unity, with an average lower limit of 1.51. These ratios are significantly higher than what is observed in nearby star-forming galaxies. Moreover, the ratio IHCO+/ICO decreases with increasing CO-integrated intensity, contrary to what is observed in the star-forming galaxies. This indicates that the HCO+ emission is enhanced and may not arise from dense gas within the Horseshoe complex. This hypothesis is strengthened by the average line ratio IHCN/ICO < 0.03, which suggests that the gas density is rather low. Using non-local thermal equilibrium, large velocity gradient modelling with RADEX, we explored two possible phases of the gas, which we call 'diffuse' and 'dense' and are characterised by a significant difference in the HCO+ abundance relative to CO, respectively NHCO+/NCO = 10−3 and NHCO+/NCO = 3 × 10−5. The average CO(1–0) and HCO+(1–0) integrated intensities and the upper limit on HCN(1–0) are compatible with both diffuse (nH = 103 cm−3, Tkin = 15 − 165 K) and dense gas (nH = 104 cm−3, Tkin > 65 K). The spectral setup of the present observations also covers SiO(2–1). While undetected, the upper limit on SiO(2–1) is not compatible with the RADEX predictions for the dense gas. We conclude that the nine molecular clouds detected in HCO+(1–0) are likely dominated by diffuse molecular gas. While the exact origin of the HCO+(1–0) emission remains to be investigated, it is likely related to the energy injection within the molecular gas that prevents gravitational collapse and star formation. Dusty star-forming galaxies (DSFGs) significantly contribute to the stellar buildup in galaxies during "cosmic noon," the peak epoch of cosmic star formation. Major mergers and gas accretion are often invoked to explain DSFGs' prodigious star formation rates (SFRs) and large stellar masses. We conducted a spatially resolved morphological analysis of the rest-frame ultraviolet/near-infrared (∼0.25–1.3 μm) emission in three DSFGs at z ≃ 2.5. Initially discovered as carbon monoxide (CO) emitters by NOrthern Extended Millimeter Array (NOEMA) observations of a bright (S350 μm = 111 ± 10 mJy) Herschel source, we observed them with the James Webb Space Telescope/NIRCam as part of the PEARLS program. The NIRCam data reveal the galaxies' stellar populations and dust distributions on scales of 250 pc. Spatial variations in stellar mass, SFR, and dust extinction are determined in resolved maps obtained through pixel-based spectral energy distribution fitting. The CO emitters are massive (Mstar ≃ (3 − 30)×1010M⊙), dusty starburst galaxies with SFRs ranging from 340 to 2500 M⊙ yr−1, positioning them among the most active star-forming galaxies at 2 < z < 3. Notably, they belong to the ∼1.5% of the entire JWST population with extremely red colors. Their morphologies are disk like (Sérsic index n ≃ 1), with effective radii of 2.0–4.4 kpc, and exhibit substructures such as clumps and spiral arms. The galaxies have dust extinctions up to AV = 5–7 mag extending over several kiloparsecs with asymmetric distributions that include off-center regions resembling bent spiral arms and clumps. The near-infrared dust-attenuation curve in these sources deviates from standard laws, possibly implying different dust–star geometries or dust grain properties than commonly assumed in starburst galaxies. The proximity (< 5″) of galaxies with consistent redshifts, strong color gradients, an overall disturbed appearance, asymmetric dust obscuration, and widespread star formation collectively favor interactions (minor mergers and flybys) as the mechanism driving the CO galaxies' exceptional SFRs. We present the first results on the spatial distribution of star formation in 454 star-forming galaxies just after the epoch of reionisation (4.8 < z < 6.5) using Hα emission-line maps and F444W imaging that traces the stellar continuum from the JWST FRESCO NIRCam Slitless Spectroscopy Survey. The Hα equivalent width profiles of star-forming galaxies across the main sequence at z ∼ 5.3 with stellar masses 6.8≤ log(M*/M⊙) < 11.1 increase with radius, which provides direct evidence for the inside-out growth of star-forming galaxies just after the epoch of reionisation. GALFIT was used to calculate half-light radii, Reff, and central surface densities within 1 kiloparsec, Σ1kpc of Hα and the continuum. At a fixed stellar mass of Log(M*/M⊙) = 9.5, Σ1kpc, Hα is 1.04 ± 0.05 times higher than Σ1kpc, C, Reff, Hα is 1.18 ± 0.03 times larger than Reff, C and both Reff measurements are smaller than 1 kiloparsec. These measurements suggest the rapid build-up of compact bulges via star formation just after the epoch of reionisation. By comparison to analogous work done at lower redshifts with Hubble Space Telescope WFC3 slitless spectroscopy as part of the 3D-HST (z ∼ 1) and CLEAR (z ∼ 0.5) surveys, we find that Reff(z) evolves at the same pace for Hα and the continuum, but Σ1kpc(z) evolves faster for Hα than the stellar continuum. As a function of the Hubble parameter, Reff, Hα/Reff,C = 1.1h(z) and Σ1 kpc, Hα/Σ1 kpc,C = h(z)1.3. These parametrisations suggest that the inside-out growth of the disk starts to dominate the inside-out growth of the bulge towards lower redshifts. This is supported by the redshift evolution in the EW(Hα) profiles from FRESCO, 3D-HST, and CLEAR at fixed stellar mass and when star-forming progenitors are traced, in which in EW(Hα) rapidly increases with radius within the half-light radius at z ∼ 5.3, but EW(Hα) increases only significantly with radius in the outer disk at z ∼ 0.5. Context. Predicting the star formation rate (SFR) in galaxies is crucial to understand their evolution and morphology. To do so requires a fine understanding of how dense structures of gas are created and collapse. In that, turbulence and gravity play a major role. Aims. Within the gravo-turbulent framework, we assume that turbulence shapes the interstellar medium (ISM), creating density fluctuations that, if gravitationally unstable, will collapse and form stars. The goal of this work is to quantify how different regimes of turbulence, characterized by the strength and compressibility of the driving, shape the density field. We are interested in the outcome in terms of SFR and how it compares with existing analytical models for the SFR. Methods. We ran a series of hydrodynamical simulations of turbulent gas. The simulations were first conducted without gravity, so that the density and velocity were shaped by the turbulence driving. Gravity was then switched on, and the SFR was measured and compared with analytical models. The physics included in these simulations was very close to the one assumed in the classical gravo-turbulent SFR analytical models, which makes the comparison straightforward. Results. We found that the existing analytical models convincingly agree with simulations at low Mach number, but we measure a much lower SFR in the simulation with a high Mach number. We develop, in a companion paper, an updated physically motivated SFR model that reproduces well the inefficient high Mach regime of the simulations. Conclusions. Our work demonstrates that accurate estimations of the turbulent-driven replenishment time of dense structures and the dense gas spatial distribution are necessary to correctly predict the SFR in the high Mach regime. The inefficient high-Mach regime is a possible explanation for the low SFR found in dense and turbulent environments such as the centre of our Milky Way and other galaxies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The ALMACAL survey is based on a database of reprocessed ALMA calibration scans suitable for scientific analysis, observed as part of regular PI observations. We present all the data accumulated from the start of ALMA operations until May 2022 for 1047 calibrator fields across the southern sky spanning ALMA Bands 3 to 10 (∼84 − 950 GHz), so-called ALMACAL−22. Encompassing over 1000 square arcmin and accumulating over 2000 hours of integration time, ALMACAL is not only one of the largest ALMA surveys to date, but it continues to grow with each new scientific observation. We outline the methods for processing and imaging a subset of the highest-quality data ('pruned sample'). Using deconvolution techniques within the visibility data (uv plane), we created data cubes as the final product for further scientific analysis. We describe the properties and shortcomings of ALMACAL and compare its area and sensitivity with other sub-millimetre surveys. Notably, ALMACAL overcomes limitations of previous sub-millimetre surveys, such as small sky coverage and the effects of cosmic variance. Moreover, we discuss the improvements introduced by the latest version of this dataset that will enhance our understanding of dusty star-forming galaxies, extragalactic absorption lines, active galactic nucleus physics, and ultimately the evolution of molecular gas. The assembly of galaxy clusters is understood to be a hierarchical process with a continuous accretion of galaxies over time, which increases the cluster size and mass. Late-type galaxies that fall into clusters can undergo ram-pressure stripping, forming extended gas tails within which star formation can happen. The number, location, and tail orientations of such galaxies provide clues about the galaxy infall process, the assembly of the cluster over time, and the consequences of infall for galaxy evolution. Here, we utilise the ∼0.5-degree diameter circular field of the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope to image six galaxy clusters at z < 0.06 that are known to contain 'jellyfish' galaxies. We searched for stripping candidates in the ultraviolet images of these clusters, which revealed 54 candidates showing signs of unilateral extra-planar emission, due to ram-pressure stripping. Seven candidates had already been identified as likely stripping based on optical B-band imaging. We identified 47 new candidates through UV imaging. Spectroscopic redshift information is available for 39 of these candidate galaxies, of which 19 are associated with six clusters. The galaxies with spectroscopic redshifts that are not part of the clusters appear to be within structures at different redshifts identified as additional peaks in the redshift distribution of galaxies, indicating that they might be ram-pressure stripped or disturbed galaxies in other structures along the line of sight. We examine the orbital history of these galaxies based on their location in the position-velocity phase-space diagram and explore a possible connection to the orientation of the tail direction among cluster member candidates. There are limitations due to different integration times and imaging different regions with respect to the cluster centre. Aims. The true nature of primordial magnetic fields (PMFs) and their role in the formation of galaxies remains elusive. To shed light on these unknowns, we investigated their impact by varying two sets of properties: (i) accounting for the effect of PMFs on the initial matter power spectrum and (ii) accounting for their magneto-hydrodynamical effects on the formation of galaxies. By comparing both, we can determine the dominant agent in shaping galaxy evolution. Methods. We used the magneto-hydrodynamics code RAMSES to generate multiple new zoom-in simulations for eight different host halos of dwarf galaxies across a wide luminosity range of 103 − 106 L⊙. These halos were selected from a ΛCDM cosmological box, tracking their evolution down to redshift z = 0. We explored a variety of primordial magnetic field (comoving) strengths of Bλ ranging from 0.05 to 0.50 nG. Results. We find that magnetic fields in the interstellar medium not only modify star formation processes in dwarf spheroidal galaxies, but these fields also entirely prevent the formation of stars in less compact, ultra-faint galaxies with halo masses and stellar masses below, respectively, ∼2.5 × 109 and 3 × 106 M⊙. At high redshifts, the impact of PMFs on host halos of dwarf galaxies through the modification of the matter power spectrum is more dominant than the influence of magneto-hydrodynamics in shaping their gaseous structure. Through the amplification of small perturbations ranging in mass from 107 to 109 M⊙ in the ΛCDM+PMFs matter power spectrum, primordial fields expedite the formation of the first dark matter halos, leading to an earlier onset and a higher star formation rate at redshifts of z > 9. We investigated the evolution of various energy components and demonstrated that magnetic fields with an initial strength of Bλ ≥ 0.05 nG exhibit a strong growth of magnetic energy, accompanied by a saturation phase that begins soon after the growth phase. These trends persist consistently, regardless of the initial conditions or whether it is the classical ΛCDM model or ΛCDM modified by PMFs. Lastly, we investigated the impact of PMFs on the present-time observable properties of dwarf galaxies, namely: the half light radius, V-band luminosity, mean metallicity, and velocity dispersion profile. We find that PMFs with moderate strengths of Bλ ≤ 0.10 nG show an impressive agreement with the scaling relations of the observed Local Group dwarfs. The galaxy-integrated star formation rate (SFR) surface density measurement (ΣSFR) has been proposed as a valuable diagnostic of the mass accumulation in galaxies given it is more tightly related to the physics of star formation and stellar feedback than other indicators. In this work, we assembled a statistical sample of 230 galaxies observed with JWST in the GLASS and CEERS spectroscopic surveys to estimate Balmer line-based dust attenuations and SFRs (i.e., from Hα, Hβ, and Hγ), along with the UV rest-frame effective radii. We studied the evolution of galaxy SFR and ΣSFR in the first 1.5 billion years of our Universe, from a redshift of z ∼ 4 to z ∼ 10. We found that ΣSFR is mildly increasing with redshift with a linear slope of 0.16 ± 0.06. We explored the dependence of SFR and ΣSFR on stellar mass, showing that a star-forming main sequence and a ΣSFR main sequence are present out to z = 10. This dependence exhibits a similar slope compared to the same relations at lower redshifts, but with a higher normalization. We find that the specific SFR (sSFR) and ΣSFR are correlated with the [O III] λ5007 Å/[O II] λ3727 Å ratio and with indirect estimates of the escape fraction of Lyman continuum photons; hence, they are likely to play an important role in the evolution of ionization conditions at higher redshifts and in the escape of ionizing radiation. We also searched for spectral outflow signatures in the Hα and [O III] emission lines in a subset of galaxies observed at high resolution (R = 2700) by the GLASS survey, finding an outflow incidence of 2/11 (=20%32%9%) = 20 % 9 % 32 % at z < 6, but no evidence at z > 6 (0/6, < 26%). Finally, we find a positive correlation between AV and ΣSFR, and a flat trend as a function of sSFR, indicating that there is no evidence of a drop in AV in extremely star-forming galaxies between z ∼ 4 and ∼10. This result might be at odds with a dust-clearing outflow scenario, which may instead take place at redshifts of z ≥ 10, as suggested by some theoretical models. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The unique characteristics of the brightest group galaxies (BGGs) serve as a link in the evolutionary continuum between galaxies such as the Milky Way and the more massive brightest cluster galaxies found in dense clusters. This research investigates the evolution of the stellar properties of BGGs over cosmic time (z = 0.08 − 1.30), extending the work from our prior studies. We analyzed the data of 246 BGGs selected from our X-ray galaxy group catalog within the COSMOS field, examining stellar age, mass, star-formation rate (SFR), specific SFR, and halo mass. We compared observations with the Millennium and Magneticum simulations. Additionally, we investigated whether stellar properties vary with the projected offset from the X-ray peak or the hosting halo center. We evaluated the accuracy of SED-derived stellar ages using a mock galaxy catalog, finding a mean absolute error of around 1 Gyr. Interestingly, the observed BGG age distributions exhibit a bias toward younger intermediate ages compared to both semi-analytical models and the Magneticum simulation. Our analysis of stellar age versus mass unveils intriguing trends with a positive slope, hinting at complex evolutionary pathways across redshifts. We observed a negative correlation between stellar age and SFR across all redshift ranges. We employed a cosmic time dependent main sequence framework to identify star forming BGGs and find that approximately 20% of BGGs in the local universe continue to exhibit characteristics typical of star forming galaxies, with this proportion increasing to 50% at z = 1.0. Our findings support an inside-out formation scenario for BGGs, where older stellar populations reside near the X-ray peak and younger populations at larger offsets indicate ongoing star-formation. The observed distribution of stellar ages, particularly for lower-mass BGGs in the range of 1010−11 M⊙, deviates from the constant ages predicted by the models across all stellar mass ranges and redshifts. Context. One way to constrain the evolutionary histories of galaxies is to analyse their stellar populations. In the local Universe, our understanding of the stellar population properties of galaxies has traditionally relied on the study of optical absorption and emission-line features. Aims. In order to overcome limitations intrinsic to this wavelength range, such as the age-metallicity degeneracy and the high sensitivity to dust reddening, we must use wavelength ranges beyond the optical. The near-infrared (NIR) offers a possibility to extract information on spectral signatures that are not as obvious in traditional optical bands. Moreover, with the current and forthcoming generation of instrumentation focusing on the NIR, it is mandatory to explore possibilities within this wavelength range for nearby-Universe galaxies. However, although the NIR shows great potential, we are only beginning to understand it. Widely used techniques such as a full spectral fitting and line strength indices need to be tested on systems that are as close to simple stellar populations as possible, and the result from the techniques need to be compared to the yields from a traditional optical analysis. Methods. We present a NIR spectral survey of extragalactic globular clusters (GCs). The set was composed of 21 GCs from the Centaurus A galaxy that were obtained with SOAR/TripleSpec4, which covered the ∼1.0–2.4 μm range with a spectral resolution (R = λ/Δλ) of 3500. These spectra cover Hβ equivalent widths between 0.98 Å and 4.32 Å, and [MgFe]′ between 0.24 Å and 3.76 Å. Results. This set was ideal for performing absorption band measurements and a full spectral fitting, and it can be used for kinematic studies and age and abundance measurements. With this library, we expect to be able to probe the capabilities of NIR models, as well as to further improve stellar population estimates for the GCs around the Centaurus A galaxy. Aims. Recent observational studies suggest that feedback from active galactic nuclei (AGNs) may play an important role in the formation and evolution of dwarf galaxies, an issue that has received little attention from a theoretical perspective. We investigated this using two sets of 12 cosmological magnetohydrodynamic simulations of the formation of dwarf galaxies (108.3M⊙ ≤ M* ≤ 109.8M⊙): 10 8.3 M ⊙ ≤ M ⋆ ≤ 10 9.8 M ⊙ one set using a version of the AURIGA galaxy formation physics model including AGN feedback and a parallel set with AGN feedback turned off. Results. We show that the full-physics AGN runs satisfactorily reproduce several scaling relations, including the black-hole-to-stellar mass (MBH-M⋆), the black-hole-to-sigma (MBH-σ⋆), and the baryonic Tully-Fisher relation. We find that the global star formation (SF) of galaxies run with an AGN is reduced compared to the one in which the AGN has been turned off, suggesting that AGN feedback is a viable way of suppressing SF in dwarf galaxies, even though none of our galaxies is completely quenched by z = 0. Furthermore, we find a tight correlation between the median SF rates and the MBH/M⋆ ratio in our simulated dwarfs. Star formation is suppressed due to gas heating in the vicinity of the AGN: less HI gas is available in AGN runs, though the total amount of gas is preserved across the two settings within each galaxy. This indicates that the main effect of AGN feedback in our dwarfs is to heat up and push the gas away from the galaxy's centre rather than expelling it completely. Finally, we show that the two galaxies harbouring the largest supermassive black holes have suffered a considerable (up to ∼65%) reduction in their central dark matter density, pinpointing the role of AGNs in determining the final dark matter mass distribution within dwarf galaxies. The mode of star formation that results in the formation of globular clusters and young massive clusters is difficult to constrain through observations. We present models of massive star cluster formation using the TORCH framework, which uses the Astrophysical MUltipurpose Software Environment (AMUSE) to couple distinct multi-physics codes that handle star formation, stellar evolution and dynamics, radiative transfer, and magnetohydrodynamics. We upgraded TORCH by implementing the N-body code PETAR, thereby enabling TORCH to handle massive clusters forming from 106 M⊙ clouds with ≥105 individual stars. We present results from TORCH simulations of star clusters forming from 104,  105, and 106 M⊙ turbulent spherical gas clouds (named M4, M5, M6) of radius R = 11.7 pc. We find that star formation is highly efficient and becomes more so at a higher cloud mass and surface density. For M4, M5, and M6 with initial surface densities 2.325 × 101,2,3 M⊙ pc−2, after a free-fall time of tff = 6.7,2.1,0.67 Myr, we find that ∼30%, 40%, and 60% of the cloud mass has formed into stars, respectively. The end of simulation-integrated star formation efficiencies for M4, M5, and M6 are ϵ⋆ = M⋆/Mcloud = 36%, 65%, and 85%. Observations of nearby clusters similar in mass and size to M4 have instantaneous star formation efficiencies of ϵinst ≤ 30%, which is slightly lower than the integrated star formation efficiency of M4. The M5 and M6 models represent a different regime of cluster formation that is more appropriate for the conditions in starburst galaxies and gas-rich galaxies at high redshift, and that leads to a significantly higher efficiency of star formation. We argue that young massive clusters build up through short efficient bursts of star formation in regions that are sufficiently dense (Σ ≥ 102 M⊙ pc−2) and massive (Mcloud ≥ 105 M⊙). In such environments, stellar feedback from winds and radiation is not strong enough to counteract the gravity from gas and stars until a majority of the gas has formed into stars. We present a novel implementation for active galactic nucleus (AGN) feedback through ultrafast winds in the code GIZMO. Our feedback recipe accounts for the angular dependence of radiative feedback on black hole spin. We self-consistently evolve in time (i) the gas-accretion process from resolved scales to a smaller scale unresolved (subgrid) AGN disk, (ii) the evolution of the spin of the massive black hole (MBH), (iii) the injection of AGN-driven winds into the resolved scales, and (iv) the spin-induced anisotropy of the overall feedback process. We tested our implementation by following the propagation of the wind-driven outflow into an homogeneous medium, and here we present a comparison of the results against simple analytical models. We also considered an isolated galaxy setup, where the galaxy is thought to be formed from the collapse of a spinning gaseous halo, and there we studied the impact of the AGN feedback on the evolution of the MBH and of the host galaxy. We find that: (i) AGN feedback limits the gas inflow that powers the MBH, with a consequent weak impact on the host galaxy characterized by a suppression of star formation by about a factor of two in the nuclear (≲kpc) region; (ii) the impact of AGN feedback on the host galaxy and on MBH growth is primarily determined by the AGN luminosity rather than by its angular pattern set by the MBH spin (i.e., more luminous AGNs more efficiently suppress central star formation (SF), clearing wider central cavities and driving outflows with larger semiopening angles); (iii) the imprint of the angular pattern of AGN radiation emission is detected more clearly at high (i.e., Eddington) accretion rates. At such high rates, the more isotropic angular patterns, as occur for high spin values, sweep away gas in the nuclear region more easily, therefore causing a slower MBH mass and spin growths and a higher quenching of SF. We argue that the influence of spin-dependent anisotropy of AGN feedback on MBH and galaxy evolution is likely to be relevant in those scenarios characterized by high and prolonged MBH accretion episodes and by high AGN wind–galaxy coupling. Submillimetre galaxies (SMGs) are some of the most extreme star-forming systems in the Universe, whose place in the framework of galaxy evolution is as yet uncertain. It has been hypothesized that SMGs are progenitors of local early-type galaxies, requiring that SMGs generally reside in galaxy cluster progenitors at high redshift. We test this hypothesis and explore SMG environments using a narrow-band VLT/HAWK-I+GRAAL study of H  |$\alpha$| and [O  iii ] emitters around an unbiased sample of three ALMA-identified and spectroscopically confirmed SMGs at |$z \sim 2.3$| and |$\sim 3.3$|⁠ , where these SMGs were selected solely on spectroscopic redshift. Comparing with blank-field observations at similar epochs, we find that one of the three SMGs lies in an overdensity of emission-line sources on the |$\sim 4$| Mpc scale of the HAWK-I field of view, with overdensity parameter |$\delta _{g} = 2.6^{+1.4}_{-1.2}$|⁠. A second SMG is significantly overdense only on |$\lesssim 1.6$| Mpc scales and the final SMG is consistent with residing in a blank field environment. The total masses of the two overdensities are estimated to be |$\log (M_{h}/{\rm M}_{\odot }) =$| 12.1–14.4, leading to present-day masses of |$\log (M_{h,z=0}/{\rm M}_{\odot }) =$| 12.9–15.9. These results imply that SMGs occupy a range of environments, from overdense protoclusters or protogroups to the blank field, suggesting that while some SMGs are strong candidates for the progenitors of massive elliptical galaxies in clusters, this may not be their only possible evolutionary pathway.
