The purpose of this pilot study was to explore the effect of altering socket-residuum coupling integrity on limb and body control, through the use of vacuum-assisted suspension. A secondary purpose was to explore the potential use of two measurement tools designed to assess mobility in a clinical context.Individuals with unilateral transtibial amputation performed intentional sway (n = 7) and treadmill walking (n = 6) tasks at three vacuum levels. Sway deviation from a straight-line path to peripheral targets was measured using an instrumented balance platform. Step width variability and targeting accuracy were measured using an augmented reality treadmill.There was a significant difference in intentional sway performance toward the target on the anterior diagonal toward the prosthetic side (p = 0.036); higher vacuum levels tended toward less deviation from a straight-line path. We found no group differences between total intentional sway deviation, step width variability or stepping accuracy across vacuum levels.Improved socket-residuum coupling integrity via vacuum may have measurable effects on functional control that warrant further investigation. Background: Sacroiliac joint fusion (SIF) has been shown to effectively alleviate pain and improve functional deficits associated with sacroiliac joint dysfunction (SIJD). Previous studies have demonstrated significant improvements in gait function, however, none have reported both over-ground walking and quiescent standing, and additionally, none have included analysis of pelvic kinematics which may contain important information regarding pain avoidant compensatory behaviors. The purpose of this study was to identify objective functional differences between symptomatic and asymptomatic sides of unilateral sacroiliac joint dysfunction (SIJD) patients and to demonstrate the effectiveness of unilateral sacroiliac fusion (SIF) to improve gait and balance function compared to matched controls. Methods: Thirteen unilateral SIJD patients were evaluated before and 6 months after SIF and were compared to matched asymptomatic controls. Pain and disability were assessed using visual analog scales and the Oswestry disability index respectively. Over ground walking and standing balance were assessed using 3D joint kinematics and kinetic ground reaction force analyses. Results: Preoperatively, SIJD patients reported high levels of pain and disability and exhibited significant deficits in gait including elevated step width, reduced hip flexion/extension, and elevated pelvic motion as well as elevated center of pressure sway characteristics during standing. After unilateral SIF, patients reported significant reductions in pain and demonstrated significant improvements in gait including normalization of step width between sides and improved hip motion however elevated pelvic obliquity and rotation motion remained. Improvements in standing balance included reduced coronal sway characteristics and normalization of loading symmetry between sides. Conclusion: Unilateral SIF resulted in significant improvements in both gait and balance function among SIJD patients to levels comparable to matched controls, however elevated pelvic motion remained. These findings help inform surgeons on the effectiveness of SIF for unilateral SIJD and provide important information regarding interpretation of functional outcomes.

Abstract Background The length of hospital stay after lower limb arthroplasty has rapidly decreased in the last decade, largely in part due to the rise of improved perioperative protocols, but also as a response to the increased economic demand associated with the rapid growth in hip and knee arthroplasty procedures. In line with this, the development of a new pathway after lower limb arthroplasty that allows for the surgery to be performed in an outpatient setting and permits for same-day discharge after the procedure is increasingly being offered. Although costs and complications between the inpatient and outpatient models have been compared, there appears to be little known about the effects on a patient’s physical function after undergoing hip or knee outpatient arthroplasty. Therefore, this systematic review aims to explore the available evidence for the effect on functional outcomes following inpatient versus outpatient hip or knee arthroplasty. Methods This systematic review adhered to the PRISMA guidelines and was prospectively registered ( https://osf.io/8bfae/ ). An electronic search of three online databases (PubMed, CINAHL and EMBASE) was conducted to identify eligible studies. All studies investigating inpatient and outpatient comparator groups, for a population of patients undergoing hip or knee arthroplasty, that assessed one or more functional outcomes, were included. A methodological quality appraisal was undertaken for the final studies contained in this review. A narrative synthesis of results is described along with quantitative outcomes presented in tables and figures. Results A total of seven studies containing 1,876 participants were included in this review. Four studies assessed a THA population, two assessed TKA and one assessed both. Functional outcomes varied, with 20 different functional outcomes utilised, of which 18 were patient-reported tools. Results of functional outcomes offered mixed support for both inpatient and outpatient pathways. Conclusions The results of this review suggest that outpatient or inpatient pathway selection for hip or knee arthroplasty should not be based on the superiority of functional outcomes alone. However, given there is growing evidence in support of an outpatient pathway in select patients with respect to cost savings and without any increase in complications, it could be proposed that an equivalency of post-operative function between the two settings makes same-day discharge favourable. Objective: This systematic review aimed to identify and describe the utility of functional outcome measures reported in intervention trials between 2010 and 2020, and to map these measures to the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) model. Method: The search was carried out on MEDLINE, CINAHL and Cochrane Register of Clinical Trials. Peer-reviewed intervention studies detailing the functional outcome measures used for any treatment for distal radius fracture were selected. Participant characteristics, outcome measures reported and the trends in their use over time and geographical locations were extracted. Results: This review analysed 119 studies. Thirty-one functional outcome measures were used across 36 countries. Ninety-two percent of studies measured both the Body Function/Structure and Activity/Participation domains of the ICF. The most frequently used measures were the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand Questionnaire, Range of Motion and Grip Strength. There is a lack of measures on successful return to meaningful occupation. Conclusion: The outcome measures identified were equally spread across the ICF domains. There is a growing importance of Patient-Reported Outcome Measures to supplement performance-based measures, but a lack of measure on successful return to meaningful occupation. BackgroundEhlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) is a group of inherited connective tissue disorders which predominantly affects women and has a prevalence as high as 1 in 5,000 individuals. Hypermobile EDS (hEDS) is the most common subtype of EDS and is characterized by multi-joint pain, particularly in large joints such as the shoulder. Physical therapy is often utilized to address the pain, physical impairments, and functional loss in patients with EDS. Kinesiology Tape (KT) is an intervention commonly used by physical therapists for treating shoulder pain and dysfunction. Studies related to the effectiveness of KT in patients with shoulder pain is equivocal and there are a lack of studies specifically studying the effects of KT in an EDS population.PurposeThe purpose of this study was to assess the efficacy and short-term effects of two different KT techniques on shoulder pain and function in individuals with hEDS and shoulder pain.MethodsParticipants were recruited from EDS support groups in the New England area of the United States; were diagnosed with hEDS by their physician; and had shoulder pain. Baseline demographic information was obtained for each participant followed by completion of 4 patient reported outcome (PRO) measures: the Upper Extremity Functional Index, QuickDASH (Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, & Hand), Shoulder Pain and Disability Index, and the Western Ontario Shoulder Instability Index. Current pain level, average pain over the past 24 h, and worst pain over the past 24 h were recorded using the numeric pain rating scale (NPRS). Subjects were randomly assigned to receive either an experimental shoulder KT procedure or a control shoulder taping. Immediately after taping, the NPRS was reassessed. Subjects then returned 48 h later to repeat the NPRS and PRO measures.ResultsThere was no significant difference between the experimental and control tape groups for any outcome measure. Background and Purpose: Many persons with multiple sclerosis (PwMS) experience cognitive impairments, which may affect their ability to engage in physical therapy. There is limited information on how cognitive impairments are associated with PwMS' ability to participate and improve their functional outcomes. This study aimed to assess the relationship between cognitive functioning and PwMS' attendance, total goal attainment, and functional improvement following physical therapy intervention. Methods: Participants (n = 45) were PwMS who participated in a larger self-management study and enrolled in physical therapy within the past 2 years. Objective cognitive functioning was examined using tests of prospective memory, retrospective memory, working memory, and processing speed, along with a self-report measure. Bivariate analyses were conducted to examine the relationship between cognitive functioning and each physical therapy outcome (session attendance, attaining goals, and changes in functional outcome measures), followed by logistic regressions with age, education, gender, and disability level as covariates. Results: Difficulty learning new verbal information was associated with a greater likelihood of "no showing" one or more of their physical therapy sessions. Reductions in working memory and processing speed were associated with PwMS not meeting all their rehabilitation goals. Despite deficits in new learning, memory, and processing speed, 85.2% of those with pre-/postscores showed improvements in at least one functional outcome measure following physical therapy intervention. Discussion and Conclusions: These findings demonstrate the ability for PwMS to make functional motor gains despite the presence of cognitive impairments and highlight the potential contributions of cognitive functioning on attendance and goal attainment of physical therapy intervention. • Real world data on functional changes following nusinersen treatment are needed. • At 12 months from the 1st dose of nusinersen, functional increase was observed. • Age and HFMSE score are predictive of the 12-month changes on both scales. • The interpretation of nusinersen effect should consider different variables. • These data confirm and expand the ones already reported in the Cherish study. Previous natural history studies suggest that type II SMA patients remain stable over one year but show some progression over two years. Since nusinersen approval, there has been increasing attention to identify more specific age-related changes. The aim of the study was to establish 12-month changes in a cohort of pediatric type II SMA treated with nusinersen and to establish possible patterns of treatment effect in relation to different variables such as age, baseline value and SMN2 copy number. The Hammersmith Functional Motor Scale Expanded and the Revised Upper Limb Module were performed at T0 and 12 months after treatment (T12). Data in treated patients were compared to available data in untreated patients collected by the same evaluators.Seventy-seven patients of age between 2.64 and 17.88 years (mean:7.47, SD:3.79) were included. On t -test there was an improvement, with increased mean scores between T0 and T12 on both scales (p < 0.001). Using multivariate linear regression analysis, age and baseline scores were predictive of changes on both scales (p < 0.05) while SMN2 copy number was not. Differences were also found between study cohort and untreated data on both scales (p < 0.001). At 12 months, an increase in scores was observed in all the age subgroups at variance with natural history data. Our real-world data confirm the treatment effect of nusinersen in pediatric type II SMA patients and that the data interpretation should take into account different variables. Introduction: The patient-rated wrist evaluation questionnaire (PRWE) is a specific wrist questionnaire, developed in Canada that has been validated and proved reliable and sensitive. It assesses pain and function. Unfortunately, there was no validated French-language version. It is important that a translation should be methodologically rigorous, as both linguistic and cultural factors come into play., Objective: To produce a French-language version of the PRWE, culturally adapted to the French-speaking populations of Europe and North America., Materials and Methods: A validated protocol was used to produce a French-language version of the PRWE (PRWE-Fr) that would be culturally acceptable for the French-speaking populations of Europe and North America. Reliability and responsiveness analyses were performed and PRWE-Fr scores were compared to F-QuickDASH-D/S (French translation of short-form Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand-Disability/Symptoms) scores to assess validity., Results: A French-language version of the PRWE (PRWE-Fr) was accepted by a multinational committee, then validated in 65 French-speaking subjects, divided into 2 groups for analyses. A strong positive correlation was found between PRWE-Fr and F-QuickDASH-D/S scores. Comparison of results between two PRWE-Fr sessions at a 1-week interval found a very strong correlation (ρ=0.93; r 2 =0.868; p<0.001). The intraclass correlation coefficient for total PRWE-Fr score demonstrated excellent reliability (ICC: 0.93; 95% CI: [0.859; 0.969]; p<0.001). The prevalence of individuals living with dementia worldwide is expected to increase exponentially; yet these individuals receive minimal recommended quality of care. Physical therapists are a valuable component of the comprehensive medical care team serving individuals with cognitive impairment. Utilization of evidence-based outcome measures to determine optimal care is critical to improving the effectiveness of care for individuals with cognitive impairment, decreasing the variability in the evaluation process. The purpose of this article is to describe functional outcome tools to assist skilled physical therapists with the evaluation process, essential to enhancing the quality of the individualized plan of care. Aim: The main aim of this trial is to test the safety and efficacy of autologous stromal/stem cells, chondrocytes or the two combined in the treatment of knee cartilage defects. Patients & methods: Patients with symptomatic chondral/osteochondral defects will be randomized to cell therapy treatment with one of three cell populations (1:1:1). The primary efficacy outcome is a functional knee score (Lysholm) at 15 months post-treatment and the primary safety outcome is the incidence of adverse events. Secondary objectives are to analyze repair tissues, quality of life and cost-utility assessments. Exploratory objectives are to identify predictors for success/potency and dose-response relationships. * STUDY DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. * BACKGROUND: Patient-reported outcome measurements (PROMs) are widely used to evaluate functional limitations. Considering PROMs for shoulder instability, information is lacking with regard to what constitutes a relevant change from baseline scores. * OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the responsiveness of the Western Ontario Shoulder Instability Index (WOSI) and the Oxford Shoulder Instability Score (OSIS) and estimate their minimal important change (MIC). * METHODS: One hundred five consecutive patients with shoulder instability completed 5 PROMs at baseline and at 6-month follow-up. The PROMs included the WOSI and OSIS, the Simple Shoulder Test, the Oxford Shoulder Score, and the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand assessment. Patients also rated their functional change on an anchor question at follow-up. Responsiveness was evaluated by testing 9 hypotheses regarding pre-defined correlations between the changes in PROM scores, by calculating the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve and by calculating the standardized response mean and effect size statistics. The MIC was determined by identifying the optimal cutoff on the receiver operating characteristic curve. * RESULTS: Seven out of 9 hypotheses (78%) were confirmed; as expected, a high correlation (0.77) was found between change scores of the WOSI and OSIS, whereas the correlations of the change scores of the WOSI and OSIS with those of general shoulder PROMs were slightly lower (0,61-0.75). The area under the curve was 0.83 (95% confidence interval: 0.75,0.91) for the OSIS and 0.82 (95% confidence interval: 0.74,0.90) for the WOSI. The MIC was about 6 points for the OSIS and about 14 points for the WOSI. * CONCLUSION: Both the WOSI and OSIS are able to measure change in shoulder function in patients with shoulder instability. Background: Major amputations are indicated for curative treatment of some tumors of the pelvis. Previous literature suggests that patients with a hemipelvectomy amputation are more efficient walking with crutches than using a prosthesis.Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether modern prosthetic use after hemipelvectomy may be a viable option for patients than in the past.Study Design: Case control trial.Methods: We identified five patients who underwent hemipelvectomy amputation and fit with high-level prosthetic components. Patients were evaluated using a timed up and go, 5-m walk, 400-m walk, and stair climb tests to evaluate functional performance with a prosthesis and without. Short Form-36 scores were collected as well. These results were compared to matched controls.Results: There was a trend for faster locomotion using crutches over wearing a prosthesis in the timed up and go, and 5-m and 400-m walk; no difference was seen in stair climbing. Short Form-36 scores showed decreased physical component score, but equal mental component score compared to the general population.Conclusion: Our results show that in addition to advances in surgical techniques, prosthetic rehabilitation and management are beginning to optimize functional mobility with the prosthesis.Clinical Relevance: Patients who use a modern prosthesis following hemipelvectomy demonstrated good clinical function with and without their prosthesis. Background Visual analogue scale foot and ankle (VAS-FA score) is a new score, validated in previous studies, but never compared to AOFAS score. Objective Analysis of the two scores using Indian language questionnaire. Methods Fifty patients with Malleolar fractures were assessed for functional outcome, time for calculation of scores, difficulty in correlation and comprehension of the questionnaire, in Malayalam language. The score parameters were compared by SSPSS. Results There was similarity in pattern of score values in both systems but also a difference between values in each category, with VAS-FA having lower values, reflecting its efficacy. There was significant correlation, similar sensitivity and agreement between the scoring systems. VAS-FA correlated better with patient's outcome and required less time for assessment. Conclusion This study shows that Indian language VAS-FA has a similar pattern of extracting scores as AOFAS and can be an efficient tool in ankle outcome assessment in Indian patients. The article presents case study of a 21-year-old women soccer midfielder, from the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III, who suffered a blow to her head from an opponent's shoulder while participating in an away match. She reported various symptoms including headache, fatigue and drowsiness, and was diagnosed with Concussion. She wore an accelerometer and her Movement and Activity in Physical Space (MAPS) scores were recorded using the Global Positioning system (GPS).

Studies have shown that patients restricted to one-handed use due to trauma or surgery often have difficulty with activities of daily living (ADLs). In order to assess hand therapists' perspectives and practices regarding ADL assessment and intervention, a 21-item survey was e-mailed to members of the American Society of Hand Therapists (ASHT). Results of the survey indicate that the majority of hand therapists surveyed (97.5%) feel that ADL performance is an important part of hand therapy practice and that teaching adaptive strategies is a high priority in the early weeks of flexor tendon rehabilitation, but less than half (45.5%) actually provide a formal assessment of ADL performance in order to discover patients' ADL needs. Introduction This review aims to provide information on the time athletes will take to resume sports activity following ankle fractures. Sources of data We systematically searched Medline (PubMED), EMBASE, CINHAL, Cochrane, Sports Discus and Google scholar databases using the combined keywords ‘ankle fractures’, ‘ankle injuries’, ‘athletes’, ‘sports’, ‘return to sport’, ‘recovery’, ‘operative fixation’, ‘pinning’, ‘return to activity’ to identify articles published in English, Spanish, French, Portuguese and Italian. Areas of agreement Seven retrospective studies fulfilled our inclusion criteria. Of the 793 patients, 469 (59%) were males and 324 (41%) were females, and of the 356 ankle fractures we obtained information on, 338 were acute and 18 stress fractures. The general principles were to undertake open reduction and internal fixation of acute fractures, and manage stress fractures conservatively unless a thin fracture line was visible on radiographs. Areas of controversy The best timing to return to sports after an acute ankle fracture is still undefined, given the heterogeneity of the outcome measures and results. The time to return to sports after an acute stress injury ranged from 3 to 51 weeks. Growing points When facing athletes with ankle fractures, associated injuries have to be assessed and addressed to improve current treatment lines and satisfy future expectancies. Areas timely for developing research The best timing to return to sports after an ankle fracture has not been established yet. Background: The advantage of single-row versus double-row arthroscopic rotator cuff repair techniques has been a controversial issue in sports medicine and shoulder surgery. There is biomechanical evidence that double-row techniques are superior to single-row techniques; however, there is no clinical evidence that the double-row technique provides an improved functional outcome.Hypothesis: When compared with single-row rotator cuff repair, double-row fixation, although biomechanically superior, has no clinical benefit with respect to retear rate or improved functional outcome.Study Design: Systematic review.Methods: The authors reviewed prospective studies of level I or II clinical evidence that compared the efficacy of single- and double-row rotator cuff repairs. Functional outcome scores included the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES) shoulder scale, the Constant shoulder score, and the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) shoulder rating scale. Radiographic failures and complications were also analyzed. A test of heterogeneity for patient demographics was also performed to determine if there were differences in the patient profiles across the included studies.Results: Seven studies fulfilled our inclusion criteria. The test of heterogeneity across these studies showed no differences. The functional ASES, Constant, and UCLA outcome scores revealed no difference between single- and double-row rotator cuff repairs. The total retear rate, which included both complete and partial retears, was 43.1% for the single-row repair and 27.2% for the double-row repair (P = .057), representing a trend toward higher failures in the single-row group.Conclusion: Through a comprehensive literature search and meta-analysis of current arthroscopic rotator cuff repairs, we found that the single-row repairs did not differ from the double-row repairs in functional outcome scores. The double-row repairs revealed a trend toward a lower radiographic proven retear rate, although the data did not reach statistical significance. The objectives of this study are to compare the results of newer performance-based functional assessments in the study of HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND) and to correlate these functional assessments with specific levels of severity of HAND. One hundred fourteen HIV+ subjects in an existing cohort were evaluated with a medical history, neurological exam, neuropsychological test battery as well as subjective and novel objective measures of functional abilities. Self-reported measures of functional performance included the Karnofsky Performance Scale, a questionnaire for instrumental activities of daily living, and a questionnaire for physical quality of life measures. The newer objective functional performance assessments included the Columbia Medication Management and the San Diego Finances tests. These newer performance-based measures of function were assessed for their ability to predict level of HAND. The two objective measures of functional performance, The Columbia Medication Management Scale and the San Diego Finances Test, were both associated with levels of severity of HAND. The Karnofsky Performance Scale and the questionnaires for role and physical quality of life were subjective measures that were also associated with specific levels of HAND. Abstract: A wearable finger flexion monitor developed to measure hand function in individuals with hand dysfunction was evaluated for feasibility, measurement repeatability and reliability, fidelity of wireless transmission, and user acceptance. Configuration of the monitor allows use in situations when a traditional measurement glove cannot be worn. Five healthy individuals participated in the study of repeatability, while 10 healthy individuals and 10 individuals with acquired brain injury participated in trials to assess feasibility and user comfort. Repeatability results showed an overall error of 3.4°, compared to 5.5° and 5.7° reported with other sensor gloves, and to manual measurements (5–8°). Intraclass coefficient of reliability (using coefficient alpha) averaged 0.95. User feedback regarding comfort of the monitor was very high. Loss of data during wireless transmission was no greater than 1.2%. Results demonstrate that the monitor has a strong potential to be used as a tool for objective hand function evaluation in the home and community for both short- and long-term monitoring. Purpose: As alternatives to nerve grafts for peripheral nerve repair, we have synthesized 12 mm long poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate-co-methyl methacrylate) (PHEMA-MMA) porous tubes and studied their regenerative capacity for the repair of surgically-created 10 mm rat sciatic nerve gaps. We compared the in vivo regenerative efficacy of these artificial tubes with the gold standard, the nerve autograft. Methods: Tubes were assessed in vivo for their ability to support nerve regeneration at 4, 8, and 16 weeks post-implantation by histology, electrophysiology, histomorphometry, and reinnervated lateral gastrocnemius (LG) dry muscle mass. Results: Axonal regeneration within the tubes was observed by 8 weeks, with outcome parameters comparable to autografts. This finding was further supported by the electrophysiological and histomorphometric results. The 16 week tube group had a bimodal response, with 60% of the tubes having a similar response to autografts and the other 40% having significantly lower (p < 0.05) outcome measures in several parameters. Conclusions: Axonal regeneration in artificial tubes was similar to that in autografts at 8 and 16 weeks, however, a bimodal distribution of regeneration was observed in 16 week tubes. Fundus-controlled perimetry (FCP, also called 'microperimetry') allows for spatially-resolved mapping of visual sensitivity and measurement of fixation stability, both in clinical practice as well as research. The accurate spatial characterization of visual function enabled by FCP can provide insightful information about disease severity and progression not reflected by best-corrected visual acuity in a large range of disorders. This is especially important for monitoring of retinal diseases that initially spare the central retina in earlier disease stages. Improved intra- and inter-session retest-variability through fundus-tracking and precise point-wise follow-up examinations even in patients with unstable fixation represent key advantages of these technique. The design of disease-specific test patterns and protocols reduces the burden of extensive and time-consuming FCP testing, permitting a more meaningful and focused application. Recent developments also allow for photoreceptor-specific testing through implementation of dark-adapted chromatic and photopic testing. A detailed understanding of the variety of available devices and test settings is a key prerequisite for the design and optimization of FCP protocols in future natural history studies and clinical trials. Accordingly, this review describes the theoretical and technical background of FCP, its prior application in clinical and research settings, data that qualify the application of FCP as an outcome measure in clinical trials as well as ongoing and future developments. Background: We sought to assess the associations between nutrition and ambulation, daily activity, quality of life (QOL), and fatigue in individuals with mild-to-moderate disability with multiple sclerosis (MS)., Methods: This cross-sectional pilot study included 20 ambulatory adult volunteers with MS (14 women and 6 men; mean ± SD age, 57.9 ± 10.2 years; mean ± SD Expanded Disability Status Scale score = 4.1 ± 1.8). Primary outcome variables included dietary assessment and the 6-Minute Walk Test (6MWT). Secondary measures included the Timed 25-Foot Walk test, Timed Up and Go test, daily activity, and three self-report questionnaires: the 12-item Multiple Sclerosis Walking Scale, the 36-item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36), and the Modified Fatigue Impact Scale., Results: Significant correlations were seen between the percentage of diet comprising fats and the 6MWT ( r = 0.51, P = .02) and the physical functioning component of the SF-36 ( r = 0.47, P = .03). The percentage of carbohydrates was significantly correlated with the 6MWT ( r = -0.43, P = .05), daily activity ( r = -0.59, P = .005), and the physical functioning component of the SF-36 ( r = -0.47, P = .03). Cholesterol, folate, iron, and magnesium were significantly positively correlated with the physical functioning component of the SF-36 and the 6MWT., Conclusions: These findings indicate better ambulation, daily function, and QOL with increased fat intake, decreased carbohydrate intake, and increased intake of the micronutrients cholesterol, folate, iron, and magnesium in people with mild-to-moderate MS. This pilot study highlights the potential impact of diet on function and QOL in MS.

Accurate, reproducible outcome measures are essential for the evaluation of any orthopaedic procedure, in both clinical practice and research. Commonly used patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) have drawbacks such as 'floor' and 'ceiling' effects, limitations of worldwide adaptability and an inability to distinguish pain from function. They are also unable to measure the true outcome of an intervention rather than a patient's perception of that outcome. Performance-based functional outcome tools may address these problems. It is important that both clinicians and researchers are aware of these measures when dealing with high-demand patients, using a new intervention or implant, or testing a new rehabilitation protocol.
