This article provides a comprehensive analysis of depopulation and residential dynamics in Teruel, a province emblematic of the aging and depopulation issues prevalent in many inland regions of Spain and Europe. Through an in-depth examination utilizing official statistics, academic studies, and reports, this study highlights the demographic structure, historical evolution, and current trends in Teruel. Key patterns of population change and their implications for urban and rural planning are identified. The analysis covers population density, vital balances, and household distribution, with a special focus on the significant role of the foreign population. Additionally, the challenges associated with vacant housing and the management of unused land are discussed, proposing revitalization strategies for the built environment in rural settings through sustainable housing initiatives. This study aims to contribute to the discourse on sustainable development of small cities and rural areas, offering integrated solutions that not only enhance living conditions but also encourage balanced and sustainable growth. Along with social and economic factors such as regional economic prosperity, the ease of movement inside and outside an area can play a pivotal role in shaping population dynamics. This study seeks to explore the spatial distribution and spatial relationships of three indicators, including one related to real accessibility (RAI) and two others related, respectively, to the shares of the older population (SOP) and of the foreign population (SFP). An exploratory spatial data analysis is, therefore, conducted at the local level using Italian municipalities as the statistical units for the empirical analysis. The study focuses on the case of the arrival of boats at the Arguineguín dock, Gran Canaria, throughout November 2020 and analyzes whether migrants were treated as a source both by the 3:00 p.m. due to the territorial disconnection of the Canary Islands (TeleCanarias1) and if there is a significant difference between male and female profiles. The study shows that migrants as a source of information occupied a testimonial fact, with white European profiles having a more favorable position in the news programs analyzed. In the last few decades, the foreign resident population in Italy has grown considerably, showing a tendency towards a stable settlement. The spatial distribution of this population is an important key to better understanding the integration process in the host society. This paper aims to explore the diachronic evolution of the settlement models of the foreign population and the main ethnic groups usually classified as residents in Italy in the period 2003–2021. Towards this aim, we computed statistical global indices referring to evenness, concentration, and clustering dimension of residential segregation and ad hoc indices that regard territorial dimensions. One of the major novelties of the contribution lies in the attempt to compute these indices not only in reference to the major population group—i.e., the Italians—but also between foreign communities and considering the gender structure. The indices are then synthesised by a multivariate analysis (principal component analysis and cluster analysis). The results of this study show that (a) higher differences in terms of settlement models are found by comparing different minority groups rather than by comparing minorities to Italians; (b) the settlement models of each foreign citizenship remain almost stable over time despite their growth in both absolute and relative terms. Studies on fertility determinants have frequently pointed to the role that socio-economic, cultural and institutional factors play in shaping reproductive behaviours. Yet, little is known about these determinants at an ecological level, although it is widely recognised that demographic dynamics strongly interact with ecosystems. This research responds to the need to enhance the knowledge on variations in fertility across space with an analysis of the relationship between fertility and population density of Italians and foreigners in Italy at the municipal level for the period 2002–2018. Using global and local autocorrelation measures and a spatial Durbin model, we show that there is a negative association between the fertility and population density of the Italian population, while the density of foreigners is correlated with higher fertility. This second result poses new insights on the relationship between space and fertility. Moreover, we find that the features of neighbouring areas, measured by population density, contribute significantly to explaining spatial fertility variation, confirming the importance of the study of spatial diffusion in demographic processes. The Central Asian region of the Russian Empire in the second half of the 19th – early 20th centuries is of interest from the point of view of modernizing transformations, which had specifics in connection with the geographical location, the composition of the population, the position within the Empire. Traditionally, modernization is considered as a set of indicators, primarily as a transition from an agrarian system to an industrial one. However, researchers highlight the socio-cultural context of modernization, including the education system. It is sometimes attributed to the spiritual aspect of modernization. Education, as a modernization indicator, is secondary, but it is associated with many socio-economic factors. The purpose of the study is to analyze the development of the education system of the Central Asian region of the Russian Empire in the context of modernizing transformations. As a result of the study, it was found out that the Russian authorities sought to systematically modernize the outlying territories. This can be seen in the example of the reorganization of the network of educational institutions. In particular, the formation of the education system for the indigenous population of the Steppe Region and Turkestan was thoughtful, with a focus on trends in changes in traditional society, in the context of socio-economic transformations, including the agricultural and industrial sectors of the economy. The article may be of interest to specialists studying the Central Asian region of the Russian Empire, as well as the development of the Russian education system.

The reality of migration is a global challenge to today’s societies, posing social, economic and political challenges. In recent years, a politicisation of these issues is being observed, leading to “anti-immigrant” political discourses and the defence of ethnocentric and assimilationist values. This has led to an increase in support for populist radical right political formations, which was reflected in Spain in the last elections with the irruption of VOX in April 2019, increasing their support in November 2019. Faced with this situation, the media, networks and social researchers have linked the presence of the foreign population with this fact, studying the population dynamics and segregation in their influence on the vote for right-wing parties. This paper aims to understand this type of relationship in the Autonomous Community of Andalusia, doing so from a municipal territorial approach and broken down by census tracts.

Internal migration in Italy increased in the 2000s due to foreigners residing in the country. Foreigners have changed the characteristics of Italy’s internal migration. Extended gravity models were run to highlight the differences between the migratory behaviours of Italians and foreigners. The model was implemented to detect the different effects of the Italian and foreign populations, and the distances between the provinces of origin and destinations of the inter-provincial migration of Italians and foreigners. Estimations obtained for the years 1995, 2000, 2005, 2010, and 2015 highlight the different evolutions of the phenomenon.

Gentrification is a widespread phenomenon that has become a threat for many old quarters. This is the case of the pre-industrial old quarter of Palma (Mallorca), the capital of one of the Mediterranean’s leading tourist destinations. The aim of this paper is to study the process of gentrification in Palma’s old quarter, using four main indicators: demographic (the foreign population), tourist-related (hotels and holiday homes) and economic (income per household and the real estate market). The analysis is conducted on an intra-urban scale (census blocks) in order to detect urban inequalities and spatial patterns in the location and/or distribution of these variables. The study identifies a series of trends: growing internationalization (of the resident population, hotel investment capital, tourists, real estate investors etc.), increased specialization in tourism, the diversification of holiday accommodation, and growing elitism and social uniformity.

Abstract After the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, the Japanese government identified the lack of proficiency in the Japanese language as one characteristic of foreigners that should be considered in disaster prevention planning. This article seeks to understand how proficiency in a local language affects disaster information gathering behavior by using the results of a questionnaire survey conducted after the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake. Respondents were categorized based on their Japanese and English language abilities. Their media mode, language preferences, information importance, and information-gathering difficulties also were examined. It was found that foreigners skilled in Japanese demonstrated similar information gathering behavior as Japanese respondents, but foreigners unskilled in Japanese showed little usage of Japanese-language media. This group also encountered difficulties due to a lack of Japanese proficiency, but many members were able to acquire some level of Japanese-language information through Internet-based methods. To address language proficiency in disaster prevention planning, information provision in languages other than Japanese should be increased, and Japanese information should be shared in a way that facilitates translation. Although this survey was significant in its scope, the results should be considered within the limitations of the Internet-based response collection and focus only on the less-affected area of Japan.

The aim of this paper is to analyze the main changes in the volume, tendencies, and modalities of qualified migration in Mexico during the last years. This information is key to evaluate the contribution of this population sector to the development of the country. The data sources used here are the Mexican Population and Housing Censuses of 2000 and 2010 as well as the Intercensal Survey of 2015. The results obtained show a gradual increase of skilled immigration in Mexico, mainly of professionals from different fields of knowledge, but also academics, scientists, and researchers, who are mostly natives of the United States, Spain, Colombia, Argentina, and Venezuela. In terms of socioeconomic integration in the country, the data reveal that the vast majority of this skilled labor is incorporated into the Mexican labor market as employees in the education sector (public or private) and the maquiladora and automotive industries as well as personal services. From the mid 1960s till now, a smaller population movement has materialized in the Mediterranean basin, involving western nationals who wish to stay on an island for a longer period. These population groups, originating mainly from western Europe and secondly from North America, want to share their yearly stay between their home country and one or several desirable places for a long term; this phenomenon was called ‘residential tourism’. Also, during the 1990s and after, a new movement of foreigners began to take place in Greece; a large number of economic migrants came in the beginning from the countries of the previous eastern socialist Europe and after from Asian and African war zones, aiming to find work in hard conditions. As an outcome, the insular space of the Aegean Sea and especially the Cyclades complex received a significant part of this double migratory flow. Aims of the paper are first to examine the new forms of population movements in Cyclades and secondly to focus the search in the most touristic of them, that is in Mykonos, Santorini and Paros. La presencia de población extranjera en España se ha consolidado como una realidad que forma parte de la vida española desde comienzos de los años noventa hasta la actualidad. El artículo divide este período de casi quince años en tres etapas, la primera desde 1990 hasta 1995, la segunda desde 1995 hasta 2000, y la última desde 2001 hasta hoy. El análisis que se lleva a cabo en este artículo persigue poner de relieve cuáles han sido las causas que han influido en la actual configuración de la población extranjera en España, partiendo de que hay causas, intrínsecas a este complejo fenómeno que no están condicionadas por las decisiones internas españolas.

Este artículo analiza las principales implicaciones demográficas y espaciales de la internacionalización de los flujos migratorios y del crecimiento de la población de nacionalidad extranjera residente en la ciudad de Barcelona. La aceleración de las migraciones internacionales a partir de los noventa ha cerrado el paréntesis de la pérdida de población iniciada en los setenta, donde la coincidencia de una baja fecundidad, el alargamiento de la esperanza de vida, el parón de los flujos procedentes del resto de España y la emigración de jóvenes por razones residenciales estaban provocando un rápido envejecimiento y el descenso del peso de la ciudad en el área metropolitana. Al mismo tiempo, el establecimiento de campos migratorios transnacionales conlleva un nuevo protagonismo de la ciudad gracias al papel de filtro redistribuidor que ejerce respecto a la nueva población inmigrada. Por último, en el análisis de las pautas de concentración y segregación de las principales nacionalidades extranjeras, a partir de los datos censales de 2001, se destaca la preexistencia de una heterogeneidad sociodemográfica por barrios, la emergencia de nuevos espacios de asentamiento y diferentes pautas espaciales de la población extranjera, y la complejidad de su evolución futura.

The presence of foreign population in Spain has become a reality in Spanish life from the beginning of the nineties till now. The article divides this period of almost fifteen years in three stages, first from 1990 to 1995, second from 1995 to 2000, and the last from 2000 to now. The analysis that is carried out in this article wants to explain which have been the causes that have influenced the current shape of the foreign population in Spain, the starting point being that there are causes linked to this complex phenomenon that are not determined by the Spanish internal decisions.

Migrations from Turkey to abroad for half a century have proceeded in the recent times by undergoing important changes. Moreover, it has been observed that there exist various types and ways of foreigner migration from abroad to Turkey which began from 1980 onwards and became clarified in the 2000s. This study is aimed to focus on who migrated from abroad to Turkey and where they migrated later on the basis of the 2000 General Census.As in the internal migration, the external migration tends towards the western part of the country, particularly big cities. Thusly, % 44 of the migration occurred in big cities; % 33.4 in the centre of towns and provinces; the rest % 22.5 in the countryside. The fact that % 51.9 of immigrants were born in Turkey gives rise to "comeback migration" thought with regard to the external migration. Moreover, that % 77.7 of them are Turkish nationals supports this judgment. On the other hand, the foreign nationals whose number has reached to 50.251 (% 21.5) are non-negligible. The big cities where the external nationals are grouped and the touristic centers on the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts are also the areas immigrants of foreign origin have settled down.
