IntroductionThe consumption phase accounts for approximately half of the food waste generated within the food system. Numerous studies have identified families with children as the primary contributors to food waste. The aims of this paper is to enhance the comprehension of food waste behaviors in households with children by characterizing it and studying how socioeconomic characteristics and food-related behaviors can predict it.MethodsA survey was conducted among 806 families with children, categorized by the child’s age and family structure. The study utilized descriptive statistics to summarize the food waste behaviors and binary regression to evaluate the predictive abilities of 12 variable related to the socio-economic characteristic, purchase, and preparation behaviors and diet quality factors.ResultsPerishable food items, such as fruits, vegetables, cereal-based product, and dairy products, were the primary items wasted in households with children. Two patterns of food waste were identified: inadequate food management leading to small amounts of waste in families with young and middle-aged children, and over-purchasing perishable items leading to waste in other households with children. Household type and purchasing habits were significant predictors, while the purchaser’s age and buying channel showed lower predictive capacity.DiscussionPolicies to reduce food waste should prioritize raising awareness among children, promoting good practices at the household level, and creating favorable conditions during purchases. Strategies include enlisting children’s participation in meal planning and food preparation as well as limiting the promotion of ultra-processed products and incentivizing the sale of bulk products at supermarket.

Nutrition, in general, and physical activity do determine the level of health of an individual and population in general.Aim. To evaluate the characteristics of nutrition and food-related behavior in adult population of Russia currently.Material and methods. The study materials were representative selections of non-organized male and female inhabitants of 25-64 y. o. (n=22258, males 8519, females 13698) of 13 regions of Russia РФ. Nutrition characteristics were evaluated by the rate of the main meal types consumption and selected routines of food-related behavior (salt added, animal fats in cooking). Quantitative evaluation was done for: red meat, fish and seafoods, poultry, fresh vegetables and fruits.Results. Every day the raw vegetables and fruits are added to the meals only in 59,7% of citizens, with the mean number of portions — 1,48±0,8. High level of dairy food was noted: 49,7% do consume milk, joghurt, sour milk every day, 40,4% — cheese, 18,9% — quark, 20,6% — sour creme and creme. The meat is added to diet in 42,9% of inhabitants. Recommended level of meat consumption as a healthy nutrition, do follow only 40,2% of participants. Poultry consumption level is at 27,5% — lower than meat. Low rate of fish consumption is found in 34,9%. Preserved with salt and vinegar products are consumed by 10,1% and a third of inhabitants (32,4%) does consume these not rarer than 1-2 times a week. The level of sausages consumption is high — at 22,5%. Almost a half of participants (47,6%) consume pastry and confectionery every day, and 28,0% — 1-2 times weekly. About a quarter, 24,4% do voluntarily decrease the rate of pastry consumption. Behavior of addition of salt to a prepared meal do have 40,5%. It was noted that 72,5% use butter for a “morning sandvich”. High fat dairies consumption is about 74,0%. Only plant oils are in use for cooking in 95,4% of participants.Conclusion. In the nutrition related behavior of adult population of Russia currently there are positive as well as negative components, from the perspective of socially significant diseases development.

Aim. To evaluate the prevalence of covert visceral adiposity (CVA) in males with type 2 diabetes (DM2) and to assess its relation with subclinical atherosclerosis and food-related behavior.Material and methods. To the study, 72 middle age males included (54,1±0,7 y.o.). Mean duration of DM25,1±1,1 years. In 28 patients DM2 had been diagnosed first time in the study. Those with body mass index (BMI) >30 kg/m2 and waist circumference >102 cm were excluded. All patients underwent standard clinical investigations and additionally, leptin levels measurement in blood serum, with bioelectrical impedance measurement of adipous tissue amount, duplex scan of carotid and femoral arteries; the EAT-26 questionnaire was applied.Results. In the group of participants, CVA prevalence was 31%. In this group of patients there were significantly higher BMI, waist circumference low density lipoproteides levels and leptin. At atherosclerosis assessment in carotid and femoral arteries, CVA associated with more significant and multifocal lesion. In regression analysis, the sum of plaques number correlated with the age, BMI, systolic blood pressure, low density lipoproteides levels.Conclusion. CVA might have significance in the increase of cardiovascular risk in middle aged males with normal BMI and with no obesity.

Aim. To assess the changes in food related behavior, physical activity (PA) in patients with metabolic syndrome (MS) related to the gender, duration of living on territories equal to the Far North. Material and methods. Totally 183 patients with MS and 65 healthy volunteers studied at the age 18-40 y.o., for 3 living in Khanty-Mansiysky Autonomic District — Yugra. Questionnaire DEBQ used to assess changes in food consumption behavior. PA assessed with questionnaires on general health, that is recommended RAMS SI National Scientific- Research Institute of Population Health and European Regional WHO bureau (2005).Results. Almost all patients studied had been living in the north for more than >10 years. Food related disorders of behaviour were found in 86,7%. Among women there were emotiogenic (41,3%) or restrictive (30,8%) types of disorder. In 50,5% men the main was external type of disorder. While following recommendations quantity of women with restrictive type increased by 47,9%. Among men with MS not following recommendations the quantity of those with external type also increased (by 22,7%). Most of the participants had average weekly PA. Men without MS treatment and with hypodynamia got 14,9% more, than women without MS treatment. During follow up their PA increased 21,1% of men with MS.Conclusion. Individual opportunities and behavior predetermines the main principals of life supporting system and attitude to the self-health of novel inhabitants of the Far North. Therefore it is necessary to improve prevention among inhabitants by their healthy life style compliance.
