The article examines how European Union rural development measures and food quality schemes are used for creating added value to regional food products in Estonia. In order to understand these processes, national food and heritage policies are analysed to highlight a lack of national instruments that would protect and promote regional specialities. The emergence of regional brands (funded by the European Union LEADER measure) is an example of an initiative to increase the visibility of regional products and food culture on the domestic market and to brand the region. Another attempt for recognising and re-regionalising local specialities is the application for the European Union Protected Geographical Indications (PGI) label for a traditional cheese sõir in south-eastern Estonia.

Regional products are considered an important element of European cultural identity, contributing to the development and sustainability of rural areas. The article presents the research of regional labels from the territory of the Slovak Republic. Our research was aimed at determining the views of producers towards the regional product labeling scheme. The survey took place from January 2020 to April 2020 using an online questionnaire via Google Docs. The results obtained from the questionnaire survey were statistically processed: t-test, Fisher's exact test, and Pearson correlation coefficient. We used Microsoft Excel and IBM SPSS Statistics 23 software. Based on the research results, we can state that two-thirds of producers (71.8%) are aware of the concept of a regional product. Most producers (82.0%) associate this concept with tradition and a specific region. They consider regional product labeling to be a tool to support the development of tourism (36.0%). A quarter of producers (25.7%) joined this scheme in order to add value to their products and help make consumers perceive them as safer products of higher quality. Based on the research results, we would recommend increasing the promotion of regional products on the part of the label coordinator. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The study analyses the importance of the protected designation of origin (PDO) as a selection criterion in purchases of traditional food products in a consumer’s daily life, the awareness of products with a PDO label, and determinants of use of the PDO label for purchasing PDO-labelled products. A survey questionnaire was distributed by regular mail to a representative sample of Slovenian consumers. The survey results show that the presence of a PDO label on a food package is not too important for respondents. Slovenian consumers tend to pay greater attention to the taste of the product, its positive impact on their health, and the ingredients. There is low awareness of PDO-labelled products, which may be explained by the fact that Slovenia has a weak tradition in using geographical indications. Among consumers who were aware of products with a PDO label, their interests and quality perceptions played a significant role in shaping their use of the PDO label. The study demonstrated a direct relationship between the belief the PDO signals a better-quality product and use of the PDO label.Highlights A PDO label is not too important to Slovenian consumers. There is poor awareness of the PDO label. It is worth investing in PDO labels.

We analysed the use of European Union schemes of Protected Designation of Origin, Protected Geographical Indication and Traditional Speciality Guaranteed labels in the European Union market according to selected criteria including type of label, country of origin, and product classes. The first part of the paper deals with the definition of food quality, quality labels, and European Union quality scheme specification. The second part includes the discussion of marketing research results. Secondary data from the Database of Origin and Registration are used. The sample consists of 1146 labels registered in this database as to the 28th of March 2013. The frequency of label utilisation is analysed according to country, type of label, and product classes, while the cluster analysis is also applied. Pearson's chi-squared test of independence is used to determine if significant differences exist between the frequency of using the labels and the above-mentioned criteria.

Over the last decade, preference for higher-quality food is observed. Consumers have become more exacting in their food products choices and they show growing interest in product quality and its certification. The paper is devoted to the topic of branding food products with quality labels and explores the topic from generation Y consumers' perspective. Members of this generation are the most powerful consumer group, because they have more disposable income than that of any previous generation. The aim of the paper is to identify and compare generation Y consumers' attitudes toward food quality labels in the Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic with focus at analysing (1) the role of quality labels as indicator of a food quality, (2) quality labels awareness, and (3) perceived benefits of the labels. A total of 379 respondents of generation Y, 221 of Czech and 158 of Slovak were interviewed in online survey. The statistical analysis procedures including descriptive statistics, Chi- square test, and Mann-Whitney U test were performed to discover relations between variables. Finally, the marketing implications of the topic are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

FOOD quality ,FOOD labeling ,FOOD consumption ,FOOD safety ,CONSUMER behavior - Abstract
Recently, food quality and safety issues have been attracting increasing attention both in academia and industry, mainly because of consumer's concerns related to this topic. This paper investigates consumer's decision-making process in the food sector, with a specific interest in quality labels. For the purposes of the study, a cluster analysis is run on a sample of 464 Italian consumers, based on their assessment of the importance over a list of 8 food attributes (comprising quality labels) and of a list of motivations that prevent them from purchasing labelled food products. Significant differences between clusters are observed based on their willingness to pay a premium price for labelled products and their socio-demographic characteristics (e.g. gender, age, income level and occupation). This paper provides empirical evidence on the critical role that quality labels play in influencing consumer's choices and on the main motivations that hinder the further development of this market. - Abstract
Political food communication may take many forms, including direct recommendations to public institutions and private households (cf. Reckinger/Régnier 2017), or more indirect labelling schemes that certify various types of quality – from sustainable via nutritious to ethical. The underlying governance claims differ in those cases: in the first one, priority is given to analytical, top-down information to procurement actors and to individuals of a given population; in the second one, action is rather taken in the direction of food production and transformation, be it top-down or participatory, with an associated effort to make the communicated guarantees transparent to consumers. In this article, we will analyse in a praxeological perspective the contrasting governance claims that structure a selection of labelling schemes in contemporary Luxembourg: official ones (such as organic produce, among others), voluntary and regional ones, international ones, as well as supermarket brands blurring boundaries and using overlaps of several labels. We will compare the guarantees and transparency that labels tend to offer in the socio-ecological, socioeconomic, sociocultural and socio-political dimensions of food certification, viewed as a potentially enabling or disabling form of fo

At the same time, we will examine the potential of these aids for individual consumers’ priorities and public procurement actors’ legal framework in selecting foodstuffs with added sustainable or ethical value, asking the question if such certifications are efficient tools of food communication and ultimately of an enhanced food literacy in an arena of potentially conflicting and crowded messages.

Estos últimos, por sus fuertes implicaciones territoriales, se afirman como herramientas de comunicación y definición de imagen de un destino. El objetivo de este artículo es analizar el papel que juegan los sellos calidad alimentaria para el éxito de un destino turístico.
