Resumo O BRAMS-SFIRE é um novo sistema de modelação atmosférica com componente de propagação de fogo desenvolvido no Centro de Previsão de Tempo e Estudos Climáticos (CPTEC / INPE) no Brasil em colaboração com o Instituto Mediterrâneo de Agricultura, Ambiente e Desenvolvimento (MED) em Portugal. O presente artigo descreve a incorporação do modelo de propagação de fogo no Brazilian developments on the Regional Atmospheric Modeling System (BRAMS). Os principais objetivos foram desenvolver o acoplamento entre um modelo atmosférico e um modelo de propagação de fogo que simulasse os efeitos da circulação atmosférica sobre um incêndio florestal e vice-versa. Esta ferramenta tem como objetivo ajudar a entender as relações entre o fogo e a paisagem nas florestas de carvalho mediterrâneas, e avaliar os resultados das simulações deste acoplamento na escala fina no ecossistema do Montado na região do Alentejo. Para isso, três grades de alta resolução espacial ao longo de três incêndios foram configuradas com dados de caracterização de superfície realistas e propriedades dos modelos de combustível. Uma grade foi colocada sobre fogo em uma planície e as outras nas montanhas, para avaliar os diferentes tipos de propagação do fogo. Este trabalho demonstra que este sistema simula de forma consistente a interação entre o fogo, os modelos de combustível e a atmosfera, mostrando que o fogo altera a circulação local ao nível da superfície, intensifica as correntes de vento ascendentes e descendentes, alterando a estrutura da atmosfera. Abstract BRAMS-SFIRE is a new atmospheric modeling system with a fire spreading component developed at the Centro de Previsão de Tempo e Estudos Climáticos (CPTEC/INPE) in Brasil, in collaboration with the Instituto Mediterrâneo para a Agricultura, Ambiente e Desenvolvimento (MED) in Portugal. The present paper describes the incorporation of the fire model into the Brazilian development of the Regional Atmospheric Modelling System (BRAMS). The main objectives were to develop the coupling between an atmospheric and a spreading fire models which simulate the effects of atmospheric circulation over a wildfire and vice-versa. This tool is intended to help understand fire-landscape relationships in Mediterranean oak woodlands and evaluate the simulation results on a fine-scale in the Alentejo region's Montado ecosystem. For this purpose, three grids of very high spatial resolution over three fires were configured with realistic surface characterization data and fuel model properties. One grid was placed at a fire in the plains and the others in the mountains to evaluate fire propagation types. This work demonstrates that this system consistently simulated the interaction between the fire, the fuel models, and the atmosphere, showing the fire changes the local circulation at the surface level, intensify wind currents, and changes the atmosphere structure.

Analisou-se as mudanças de parâmetros biofísicos e tendências de índices de extremos anuais da temperatura do ar na região de Sinop, Mato Grosso, considerando estações meteorológicas automáticas (EMA) instaladas em área urbana e rural. As estimativas das mudanças no uso do solo, albedo da superfície, saldo de radiação (Rn) e fluxos de calor sensível (H) e calor latente (LE) foram obtidas por imagens dos satélites Landsat 8 e Landsat 5, no mês de agosto dos anos de 2007, 2011 e 2017. Com o software Rclimdex, foram calculadas as tendências de seis índices de extremos dos valores máximos, mínimos e médios das temperaturas máximas e mínimas anuais, com calibração pelo método dos mínimos quadrados e significâncias estatísticas consideradas pelo teste de Fisher com nível de significancia igual a α: 0,05. Foram observadas mudanças no uso e ocupação solo e dos parâmetros biofísicos com aumento do albedo e redução do Rn para EMA na área rural, enquanto na estação urbana (UFMT Sinop) observou-se a inversão das parcelas de LE e H. Os índices de extremos indicaram tendência no aumento das temperaturas extremas na área urbana, sendo significativas as mudanças nos índices TNx, DTR, Tn90p e Tx90p. Na última década, com a expansão do município de Sinop-MT, ocorreram alterações nas tendências dos índices de extremos de temperatura, sendo estas, serem atribuídas as mudanças no uso do solo e parâmetros biofísico.

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES A study of sensible (H) and latent (Le) heat fluxes between the ocean and the atmosphere, using measurements performed by micrometeorological towers aboard Brazilian research vessels in the South and Equatorial Atlantic Ocean, is presented. Data obtained from four cruises, performed in December 2012, July and October 2015 and between November 2017 and January 2018, were studied. The heat fluxes obtained from the Eddy Covariance (CV) methodology and the bulk parameterization were analyzed and compared. For the cruises performed in December 2012, July 2015 and October 2015, the largest differences in fluxes were observed associated with the passage of low pressure atmospheric systems, large differences between sea temperature and air temperature and strong winds. The greatest similarities between the flows were observed under the influence of the South Atlantic Subtropical High and light winds. For the cruise performed between November 2017 and January 2018, the largest discrepancy between the two methods was observed, compared to other cruises, especially for Le. It was also analyzed the micrometeorological behavior of the flow in each of the cruises, under different stability conditions. Anisotropic turbulence was identified in October 2015. This study presents for the first time Hockey Stick obtained from data collected on moving ships. In addition it was possible to observe the presence of submeso scale movements, with the highest number from November 2017 to January 2018. These movements can influence vertical flows, generating unpredictable and random contributions. The results demonstrate the importance of local ocean surface conditions and the large-scale synoptic conditions of the atmosphere, which influence the evolution of the marine atmospheric boundary layer and the heat transfer between the ocean and the atmosphere. Este trabalho apresenta um estudo dos fluxos de calor sensível (H) e latente (Le) entre o oceano e a atmosfera, utilizando medidas realizadas por torres micrometeorológicas a bordo de navios brasileiros de pesquisa no oceano Atlântico Sul e Equatorial. Os dados obtidos em quatro cruzeiros, realizados nos meses de dezembro de 2012, julho e outubro de 2015 e entre novembro de 2017 e janeiro de 2018, foram estudados. Os fluxos de calor obtidos a partir da metodologia da Covariância de Vórtices (CV) e da parametrização de bulk (bulk), foram analisados e comparados. Para os cruzeiros realizados em dezembro de 2012, julho e outubro de 2015, foram observados as maiores diferenças nos fluxos, associadas à passagem de sistemas atmosféricos de baixa pressão, grandes diferenças entre a temperatura do mar e a temperatura do ar e vento intensos. As menores diferenças entre os fluxos foram observadas sob a atuação da Alta Subtropical do Atlântico Sul e regime de ventos fracos. Já para o cruzeiro realizado entre novembro de 2017 e janeiro de 2018 foram observadas as maiores discrepâncias entre os dois métodos quando comparado com os demais cruzeiros, principalmente para Le. Foi analisado também o comportamento micrometeorológico do escoamento em cada um dos cruzeiros, sob diferentes condições de estabilidade. Foi identificada a existência de uma turbulência anisotrópica em outubro de 2015. Este estudo apresenta pela primeira vez Hockey Stick obtidos através dos dados coletados em navios em movimento. Além disso foi possível observar a presença de movimentos da escala submeso, com maior numero de ocorrência no período de novembro de 2017 à janeiro de 2018. Estes movimentos podem influenciar os fluxos verticais, gerando contribuições imprevisíveis e aleatórias. Os resultados demonstram a importância das condições locais da superfície do oceano e das condições sinóticas de grande escala da atmosfera que influenciam a evolução da camada limite atmosférica marinha e a transferência de calor entre o oceano e a atmosfera.

Com o m de avaliar o comportamento das ondas citadas com e sem influência de sistemas frontais os experimentos foram configurados com forçantes atmosféricos diários (Experimento 1) e mensais (Experimento 2) respectivamente. Para cada simulação foram avaliados um evento típico e extremo previamente selecionados e caracterizados. De forma geral, observou-se uma tendência ao resfriamento do oceano em superfície estendendo-se para maiores profundidades ao longo da propagação das oscilações para NE em ambas simulações, principalmente no Expt.1. Nesse experimento foi observado na plataforma continental interna um declínio da Temperatura da Superfície do Mar (TSM) de até 0,2 ◦C/dia durante o evento típico e de até 0,6 ◦C/dia durante o evento extremo. O efeito de resfriamento apresentou-se mitigado após Ilha Bela, exceto no evento extremo cujo declínio da temperatura estendeu-se até Cabo Frio. No Experimento 1 foi observada a maior contribuição do termo advectivo vertical na equação de conservação de calor e do termo advectivo horizontal no Experimento 2, indicando a maior influência da interação na camada limite oceano-atmosfera e da propagação da onda respectivamente. A maior contribuição negativa no balanço do fluxo de calor superficial total foi associada à menor incidência de radiação solar no evento típico e aos fluxos turbulentos de calor, especialmente de calor latente, no evento extremo. Nos eventos típico e extremo foi observada uma transferência de calor do oceano para a atmosfera de aproximadamente 20 W/m2 e 220 W/m2 respectivamente. The impact of subinertial waves originated from cold fronts on the variability of sea temperature in Southeast Brazilian Continental Shelf was investigated through two numerical simulations with high spatial resolution. In order to evaluate the behavior of these waves with and without in uence of frontal systems, the experiments were con gured with daily (Experiment 1) and monthly (Experiment 2) atmospheric forcing respectively. In each simulation was avaliated a typical and an extreme event previously selected and characterized. In general, a tendency to ocean cooling on the surface and into greater depths along the propagation of the oscillations for NE was observed in both experiments, mainly in Expt.1. In this experiment was observed the decline in Sea Surface Temperature (SST) of up to 0.2 ◦C/day during the typical event and up to 0.6 ◦C/day on inner continental shelf during the extreme event. The cooling e ect was mitigated after Ilha Bela, except in extreme event when the temperature decline spreads to Cabo Frio. The greatest contribution in heat conservation equation was the vertical advective term in Experiment 1 and the horizontal advective term in Experiment 2, indicating the greater in uence of the interaction in the ocean-atmosphere boundary layer and of the wave propagation respectively. The largest negative contribution in the total surface heat ux balance was associated with the lower incidence of solar radiation in the typical event and with turbulent heat uxes, especially latent heat, in the extreme event. In the typical and extreme events selected, the heat transfer from the ocean to the atmosphere was observed to be about 20 W/m2 and 220 W/m2 respectively.

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES The knowledge about the mass and energy fluxes between the atmosphere and the ocean at different regions of the planet is of utmost importance for the improvement of the weather and climate predictions. This is mainly necessary in regions such as the South Atlantic Ocean where the formation and propagation of atmospheric transient systems like cyclones and cold fronts are frequent. For the realization of this study we used data collected during cruises onboard Brazilian research ships in the Southwestern Atlantic ocean in June 2012, October 2013 and October 2014. This work compares the sensible heat (H), latent heat (Le) and momentum (τ) fluxes between the ocean and the atmosphere, as well as the friction velocity (u∗) obtained from direct measurements using the Eddy Covariance Methodology (EC) with estimated obtained from the bulk turbulent parameterization. We describe and analyze the spatial and temporal differences for the period of the three cruises and their relation with local variables and processes, and with atmospheric effects at the large scale. The most significant differences are associated to regions where we observe intense SST gradients, intense differences between the air temperature (Tair) and SST, changes in the wind direction and the transition of synoptic systems. Friction velocity, important for forcing the oceanic currents and for its role on the turbulent fluxes determination, presented a good agreement between the two methods used here. The u∗ showed to be strongly dependent on the wind magnitude at the sea surface. Momentum fluxes also presented a good coherency between the two methods utilized, both on mean magnitudes and temporal variability. As expected, τ was dependent on the wind velocity, however temporal variations on its behavior were mainly associated to changes in the wind direction. Sensible heat flux presented a good agreement between the two methods, were bulk was able to reproduce in both magnitude and temporal variability the results obtained through CV. The H was mainly associated to the magnitude of the difference between SST and Tair. Latent heat flux presented significant differences between the two methods during the 2012 and 2013 experiments, performed at the southeastern coast of Brazil and at the Brazil- Malvinas Confluence (BMC) region, respectively. These differences were mostly associated to cold advection processes, high wind magnitudes and intense horizontal SST gradients. Nevertheless, during the 2013 experiment, the mean magnitudes of Le presented a good agreement, with the higher differences present at the BMC region. Considering that our study region is very dynamical at both spatial and temporal viewpoints, at the ocean and in the atmosphere, this work has demonstrated that in many situations the bulk parameterization does not represent the local reality. The present work allowed an advance in the present knowledge about the ocean-atmosphere interaction processes which have recognized importance for the weather and the climate of South America. Based upon the results of this work, future studies in the fields of numerical modeling of weather and climate, as well as general ocean circulation, may be improved. Conhecer os fluxos de massa, momentum e energia entre a atmosfera e o oceano em diferentes regiões do planeta é de extrema importância para o a melhoria das previsões de tempo e clima. Principalmente em regiões como o oceano Atlântico Sul, onde a formação e propagação de sistemas atmosféricos transientes, são frequentes. No desenvolvimento desse estudo foram utilizados dados coletados durante cruzeiros a bordo de navios brasileiros de pesquisa no oceano Atlântico Sudoeste em junho de 2012, outubro de 2013 e outubro de 2014. Esse trabalho compara os fluxos de calor sensível (H), calor latente (Le) e momentum (τ) entre o oceano e a atmosfera, assim como a velocidade de fricção (u∗). Esses parâmetros são obtidos através da metodologia da Covariância de Vórtices (CV) e estimativas obtidas através da parametrização turbulenta de bulk (bulk). São descritas e analisadas as diferenças temporais e espaciais para o período dos três cruzeiros, sua relação com variáveis e processos locais e com efeitos de grande escala atmosférica. As diferenças mais significativas são associadas a regiões onde são observados intensos gradientes de temperatura da superfície do mar (TSM), intensas diferenças entre a TSM e a temperatura do ar (Tar), mudanças na direção do vento e transição de sistemas sinóticos. A velocidade de fricção, importante por forçar as correntes oceânicas e pelo seu papel na determinação dos fluxos turbulentos, apresentou uma boa concordância entre os dois métodos. Essa, se mostrou fortemente dependente da magnitude do vento na superfície oceânica. O fluxo de momentum também apresentou boa coerência entre os dois métodos utilizados, tanto em magnitudes médias como em sua variabilidade temporal. Sendo dependente da velocidade do vento, porém variações temporais no seu comportamento foram associadas principalmente as alterações na direção do vento. O fluxo de calor sensível apresentou uma boa concordância entre os dois métodos, tanto em magnitude como em variabilidade temporal. Sendo as maiores discrepâncias, relacionadas à grandes diferenças entre a Tar e a TSM. O fluxo de calor latente apresentou consideráveis diferenças entre os dois métodos durante os experimentos de 2012 e 2013, realizadas na costa sudeste do Brasil e na região da Confluência Brasil-Malvinas (CBM), respectivamente. Essas diferenças foram associadas a processos de advecção fria, altas magnitudes do vento e intensos gradientes horizontais de TSM. Durante o experimento de 2013, as magnitudes médias de Le foram bem coerentes entre os dois métodos, sendo as maiores diferenças observadas sobre a região da CBM. Considerando que a região desse estudo é muito dinâmica, tanto do ponto de vista espacial como temporal, no oceano e na atmosfera, esse trabalho demonstrou que em muitas situações bulk não representa a realidade local. O presente trabalho permitiu um avanço no conhecimento presente sobre os processos de interação oceano-atmosfera que tem importância reconhecida para o tempo e clima da América do Sul. Com base nos resultados desse trabalho, futuros estudos na área de modelagem numérica de previsão de tempo e clima, assim como de circulação geral dos oceanos podem ser melhorados.

Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico In this study, simulated to net radiation and energy flux in a region with rotation of crops, for two distinct periods: Period 1 (01 / Feb / 2009 to 31 / Jan / 2010) and period 2 (14 / Dec / 2009 to 28 / Apr / 2010). In these simulations we used the NOAH LSM surface model. For the period 1 initially, without any calibration simulations were performed only with the input of the local weather conditions, an adjustment of an experiment controlfile file and spin up for the stabilization of the initial conditions. In these simulations, the results were very poor, indicating a need to test the sensitivity of the model especially because of the launch conditions of temperature and soil moisture. After these tests it was found that the initial predictions of impact can be considerable conditions for the two cases. It is noticed that the soil moisture changes generate greater impact in the model that temperature variations boot. As a result, proposed a calibration for the model. The calibration method was to make some simulations manually varying the parameters of soil and vegetation, or both, according to the deficiencies of the NOAH LSM. The tests were carried out until they could get a more optimized forecast for the period studied. The initial analysis of the local conditions of the experimental site was very important for calibration, as it allowed establishing previous parameters corresponding to values close to those parameters when calibrated. Simulation results after calibration applied satisfactorily exhibited liquid radiation and heat flows. So it can be said that the calibration is proposed representing characteristics of vegetation and soil correctly. Nevertheless, the corrections that the model still needs, especially in sensible and latent heat fluxes, may be associated with representation in heat distribution processes and water, or by the fact that the colder months had considerable regime rains. So when there is cloud cover, the model still has problems in representation. Results for long periods of data, as in this work, may lose some of representativeness due to the seasonality of the vegetation parameters, for which varied the parameters for periods culture and fallow. The most important contribution made in this work was a model fit for an agricultural ecosystem area and validate it for the future, it may be used as an initial boundary condition in numerical weather prediction models. The implementation variations in LAI and albedo parameter applied in the simulations of period 2 (soybean) improved the description of the heat flux and net radiation. Neste estudo simulou-se a radiação líquida e os fluxos de energia para uma região com rotações de cultivos agrícolas, para dois períodos distintos: Período 1 (01/Fev/2009 até 31/Jan/2010) e período 2 (14/Dez/2009 até 28/Abr/2010). Nestas simulações utilizou-se o modelo de superfície NOAH LSM. Inicialmente, para o período 1, foram feitas simulações sem nenhuma calibração, apenas com a entrada das condições meteorológicas locais, um ajuste do arquivo controlfile e um experimento spin up para a estabilização das condições iniciais. Nestas simulações, os resultados foram muito insatisfatórios, indicando uma necessidade de testar a sensibilidade do modelo principalmente frente às condições de inicialização da temperatura e da umidade do solo. Após estes testes verificou-se que impactos das previsões às condições iniciais podem ser consideráveis para os dois casos. Percebe-se que as variações de umidade do solo geram maior impacto no modelo devido à temperatura do solo que é simulada. Na sequência, propôs-se uma calibração para o modelo. O método de calibração consistiu em fazer algumas simulações variando-se manualmente os parâmetros de solo e vegetação, ou ambos, de acordo com as deficiências do NOAH LSM. Assim, os testes foram realizados até que se conseguisse uma previsão mais otimizada para o período estudado. A análise inicial das condições locais do sítio experimental foi de suma importância para a calibração, pois ela possibilitou estabelecer parâmetros prévios que correspondem a valores próximos dos parâmetros quando calibrados. Os resultados das simulações, após a calibração aplicada, representaram satisfatoriamente a radiação líquida e os fluxos de calor. Portanto, pode-se dizer que a calibração proposta está representando as características de vegetação e de solo de forma correta. Apesar disso, as correções que o modelo ainda necessita, principalmente nos fluxos de calor sensível e latente, podem estar associadas a representação nos processos de distribuição do calor e da água, ou ainda pelo fato de que os meses mais frios tiveram um considerável regime de chuvas. Assim, quando há nebulosidade, o modelo ainda apresenta problemas na representação. Os resultados para períodos longos de dados, os quais foram considerados neste trabalho podem perder um pouco da representatividade em função da sazonalidade dos parâmetros de vegetação, motivo pelo qual variou-se os parâmetros para períodos com cultura e com pousios. A contribuição mais importante realizada neste trabalho foi um ajuste do modelo para uma região de ecossistema agrícola e a sua validação para que futuramente, possa ser utilizado como condição de contorno inicial em modelos de previsão numérica do Tempo. A implementação das variações diárias no parâmetro IAF e no albedo, aplicada nas simulações do período 2 na cultura de soja, melhorou a descrição dos fluxos de calor e da radiação líquida.

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior Between 3-12 December 2012, the Oceanographic Vessel Alpha Crucis held oceanographic stations in the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean in support to both SAMOC (South Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation) and ACEx (Atlantic Ocean Carbon Experiment) projects. During the research cruise, the vessel performed 19 measurements with the release of weather balloons with radiosondes. From the data collected by the radiosondes, it was possible to verify the variability of the marine atmospheric boundary layer (MABL) over different synoptic conditions occurring in the area and period of study. From meteorological and oceanographic data collected throughout the trajectory of the ship by an automatic weather station and the onboard termosalinograph, it was possible to estimate the latent and sensible heat fluxes between the ocean and the atmosphere from bulk parameterization. In order to better understand the importance of the local forcing mechanisms imposed by the sea surface temperature (SST) and the large-scale forcing by the current synoptic conditions in the study period, 19 measurements were divided into four transects along the complete ship's trajectory, where the data were grouped with respect to the active synoptic weather conditions in the study area. Our results demonstrate that in the absence of large-scale transient systems acting in the study area, the MABL was modulated by the SST field. This was observed in the first transect, were we found a thick and turbulent MABL with its top at around 600 m and more intense heat fluxes (up to 209 W/m² of latent heat and 47 W/m² of sensible heat) mainly over the warm waters associated with the Brazil Current (BC). Over cooler waters of the transect, outside the domain of the BC, the MABL was shallower, around 200 m, with less intense heat fluxes (up to 1.4 W/m² of latent heat and -16.8 W/m² of sensible heat). In the second transect with the formation of an extratropical cyclone in the La Plata river mouth region, we noted the impact of the synoptic atmospheric conditions influencing the evolution of the MABL during the prefrontal condition when a MABL stratification was verified. During the pos frontal situation, the MABL was a well developed one, with a 1200 m height. In the pos frontal environment, latent heat fluxes (average 290 W/m² with a peak of 468 W/m²) and sensible heat fluxes (average of 18 W/m² with a peak of 45 W/m²) indicate a heat flux directed from the ocean to the atmosphere much more intense in his latent component. On the other hand, in the prefrontal region, lower values of the latent heat fluxes (average of 18 W/m² with a minimum of 15.8 W/m²) and sensible heat fluxes (-63.4 W/m²) were found. During the third transect with the incursion of the warm air mass, the MABL became shallower over the cooler waters of the Brazilian Coastal Current. Along of the entire third transect the SST was lower than the air temperature and this transect presented a stable boundary layer. Throughout the fourth and final transect, there was a secondary cyclogenesis off the coast of the Rio Grande do Sul state in southern Brazil, just north of the cyclone that has been formed in the vicinity of the La Plata river mouth. This cyclone has developed rapidly and has moved toward the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean, leaving the study area in the cold sector of the cyclone. With the incursion of the cold air mass, the MABL become thicker and more turbulent with its top around 600 m. The values of latent heat fluxes ranged between 461.2 W/m² over the warm waters associated with the BC and 30.2 W/m² on the cooler waters outside the domain of the BC. This work offers an analysis of movel meteorological and oceanographic observations taken simultaneously in the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean. These observations are fundamental to widen our understanding on the physical processes occurring at the ocean-atmosphere interface and have primary importance for the weather and climate forecast of the south-southwestern region of Brazil. Entre os dias 3 a 12 de dezembro de 2012, o Navio Oceanográfico Alpha-Crucis realizou estações oceanográficas no Oceano Atlântico Sudoeste em apoio aos projetos SAMOC (South Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation) e ACEx (Atlantic Ocean Carbon Experiment). Durante o cruzeiro de pesquisa, o navio realizou 19 medições, com o lançamento de balões meteorológicos com radiossondas. A partir dos dados coletados pelas radiossondas, foi possível verificar a variabilidade da camada limite atmosférica marinha (CLAM) durante distintas condições sinóticas atuantes na área e período de estudo. A partir de dados meteorológicos e oceanográficos coletados ao longo de toda a derrota do navio através da estação meteorológica automática e do termosalinógrafo de bordo, foi possível estimar os fluxos de calor latente e sensível entre o oceano e a atmosfera a partir de parametrizações bulk. Para entender a importância dos mecanismos de forçamento local impostos pela temperatura da superfície do mar (TSM) e de grande escala imposto pelas condições sinóticas vigentes no período de estudo, as 19 medições foram divididas em 4 transectos realizados ao longo da trajetória, onde os dados foram agrupados com respeito às condições atmosféricas sinóticas atuantes. Os resultados do trabalho demonstram que, na ausência de sistemas transientes de grande escala atuantes na região de estudo, a CLAM foi modulada pelo campo de TSM. Isso foi observado no primeiro transecto, onde a CLAM apresentou-se espessa e turbulenta com seu topo em torno de 600 m e com fluxos de calor mais intensos (chegando até 209 W/m² de calor latente e 47 W/m² de calor sensível) principalmente sobre as águas quentes associadas à Corrente do Brasil (CB). Sobre águas mais frias, a CLAM foi mais rasa, em torno de 200 m e com fluxos de calor menos intensos (chegando até 1,4 W/m² de calor latente e -16,8 W/m² de calor sensível). No segundo transecto, com a formação de um ciclone extratropical, nota-se o impacto das condições sinóticas influenciando a evolução da CLAM durante a condição pré-frontal, onde se verificou uma estratificação da CLAM. Na condição pós-frontal, a CLAM apresentou-se bem desenvolvida, com uma altura de 1200 m e os fluxos de calor latente (média de 290 W/m² e com pico de 468 W/m²) e calor sensível (média de 18 W/m² e com pico de 45 W/m²) indicam um fluxo de calor do oceano para a atmosfera muito mais intenso em sua componente latente. Por outro lado, na região pré-frontal, valores mais baixos de fluxos de calor latente (média de 18 W/m² e com um mínimo de -15,8 W/m²) e calor sensível (-63,4 W/m²) foram encontrados. Durante o terceiro transecto com a incursão da massa de ar quente, a CLAM ficou mais rasa sobre as águas mais frias da Corrente Costeira do Brasil. Ao longo de todo o terceiro transecto a TSM esteve menor que a temperatura do ar e esse apresentou uma camada limite estável. Ao longo do último transecto, verificou-se uma ciclogênese secundária na costa do Rio Grande do Sul, imediatamente ao norte do ciclone que havia se formado nas proximidades da desembocadura do Rio da Prata. Esse se desenvolveu rapidamente e se deslocou para o Oceano Atlântico Sudoeste, deixando a região de estudo sob o setor frio do ciclone. Com a incursão da massa de ar frio, a CLAM ficou mais espessa e turbulenta com seu topo em torno de 600 m. Os valores dos fluxos de calor latente variaram entre 461,2 W/m² sobre as águas quentes associadas à da CB e 30,2 W/m² sobre as águas mais frias fora do domínio dessa. Esse trabalho oferece uma análise de observações meteorológicas e oceanográficas inéditas tomadas simultaneamente no Oceano Atlântico Sudoeste. Essas observações são fundamentais para ampliar o entendimento dos processos físicos que ocorrem na interface oceano-atmosfera e tem importância primária para a previsão do tempo e clima na região sul-sudeste do Brasil.

The Southwest Atlantic Ocean is characterized, in winter, by the presence of an oceanographic front between the Brazil Current (BC) and the Brazilian Coastal Current (BCC). The BC/BCC oceanographic front generates intense thermal horizontal gradients between cold waters of the southern Brazilian continental shelf, dominated by the BCC, and the offshore warm waters, dominated by the BC. This study analyses, for the first time in the known literature, the coupling mechanisms between the ocean and the atmosphere from observational data taken simultaneously during an oceanographic research cruise in the southern Brazilian coast during 11-21 June 2014. In this field experiment, atmospheric radiosondes were launched and hydrographic stations were taken to measure the ocean s temperature and salinity. The study area was chosen based on the local thermal gradients presented by the BC/BCC front. Five oceanographic transects were performed perpendicular to the coast starting at the locality of Paranaguá (Paraná State) and ending in Chuí (Rio Grande do Sul State).The winter meteorological and oceanographic features were considered in the determination of ship s route. The installation of a micrometeorological tower at the bow of the ship allowed the realization of direct measurements of heat, momentum and CO2 fluxes. This study analyses the large scale meteorological conditions and explores the behavior of the marine atmospheric boundary layer using radiosondes data taken in situ. In the period when the data were collect, typical winter conditions were observed in the study area, like the cold front passage associated to an incursion of a post-frontal cold air mass and an extratropical cyclone formation. Meteorological and oceanographic measurements performed by the instruments installed on the ship were utilized to estimate the heat fluxes through bulk formulas method. This estimates were lately compared to the heat fluxes measured directly by the sensors installed in the of the ship s bow. Measurements were obtained using the Eddy Covariance method, broadly used in micrometeorological research. To obtain the turbulent fluxes at the ocean-atmosphere interface adjustments in the observational data are necessary due to the ship s motion. During most of the study period, the sea surface temperature was higher than the air temperature, thus generating a heat transfer from the ocean to the atmosphere. The heat fluxes were commonly positive on both sides of the BC (warm)/BCC (cold) oceanographic front. However, there was some difference on the heat fluxes magnitude between the two sides of the front with more intense heat exchange on the BC side. The present results show that the intense thermal horizontal gradients between the BC and the BCC waters that occur during winter in the southern coast of Brazil, the transient atmospheric systems and the air thermal advection have an important role on the marine atmospheric boundary layer modulation and on the heat and CO2 fluxes between the ocean and the atmosphere. Meteorological and oceanographic observations are fundamental to widen our understanding of the processes occurring at the ocean-atmosphere interface which are known to have primary importance on weather and climate forecast. O Oceano Atlântico Sudoeste é caracterizado, no inverno, pela presença de uma frente oceanográfica entre a Corrente do Brasil (CB) e a Corrente Costeira do Brasil (CCB). A frente oceanográfica CB/CCB gera intensos gradientes horizontais termais entre as águas frias da plataforma continental do Sul do Brasil, dominadas pela CCB, e águas quentes do oceano profundo, dominadas pela CB. Esse trabalho analisa, pela primeira vez na literatura conhecida, os mecanismos de acoplamento entre o oceano e a atmosfera a partir de dados observacionais da atmosfera e do oceano que foram tomados simultaneamente durante um cruzeiro de pesquisa oceanográfica na costa sul do Brasil entre 11 a 21 de junho de 2012. Nesse experimento, foram lançadas radiossondas atmosféricas e realizadas estações hidrográficas para medidas de temperatura e salinidade do oceano. A área de estudo foi escolhida com base no gradiente termal local apresentado pela frente CB/CCB. Foram realizados cinco transectos perperndiculares à costa sul do Brasil, iniciando-se na localidade de Paranaguá (PR) até o Chuí (Rio Grande do Sul). As características oceanográficas e meteorológicas de inverno foram consideradas na determinação da derrota do navio. A instalação de uma torre micrometeorológica na proa do navio permitiu a realização de medições diretas dos fluxos de calor, momentum e CO2. Este estudo analisa as condições meteorológicas de grande escala e investiga o comportamento da camada limite atmosférica marinha a partir dos dados in situ das radiossondagens. No período em que os dados foram coletados foram observadas condições atmosféricas típicas de inverno, como a passagem de frente fria associada à incursão de uma massa de ar frio pós-frontal e a formação de ciclone extratropical. Observações meteorológicas e oceanográficas realizadas pelos instrumentos instalados no navio foram utilizadas para estimar os fluxos de calor pelo método bulk formulas. Essas estimativas foram comparadas aos fluxos medidos diretamente pelos sensores instalados na proa do navio. As medidas são obtidas utilizando o método de Covariância de Vórtices, usado amplamente em pesquisas micrometeorológicas. Para obter os fluxos turbulentos na interação oceano-atmosfera são necessárias correções nos dados observados devido ao movimento do navio. Durante a maior parte do período estudo, a temperatura da superfície do mar esteve maior do que a temperatura do ar, gerando uma transferência de calor do oceano para atmosfera. Os fluxos de calor foram, geralmente, positivos em ambos os lados da frente oceanográfica CB (quente)/CCB (frio). Contudo, há diferença na magnitude dos fluxos de calor entre os dois lados da frente com a troca foi mais intensa no lado da CB. Os resultados apresentados mostram que os intensos gradientes horizontais termais entre as águas da CB e da CCB que ocorrem durante o inverno ao largo da costa do RS, os sistemas transientes e as advecções térmicas têm um papel importante na modulação da camada limite atmosférica marinha e nos fluxos de calor e CO2. Observações meteorológicas e oceanográficas são fundamentais para ampliar o entendimento dos processos que ocorrem na interface oceano-atmosfera e tem importância primária para a previsão do tempo e clima.

Understanding the interactions between ocean and atmosphere in regions of oceanographic fronts is of vital importance for the improvement of numerical models for weather and climate forecasting. In the South Atlantic Ocean (SAO) the meeting between the warm waters of the Brazil Current (BC) and the cold waters of the Malvinas (Falkland) Current (MC) in the region known as the Brazil-Malvinas Confluence (BMC), results in intense mesoscale oceanic activity and, for this reason, this region is considered one of the most energetic of the Global Ocean. The interactions resulting from the thermal contrast in regions oceanographic fronts of the OAS are investigated in this work through estimates of heat fluxes based on data collected in situ and by satellite. The results of this study show that the response to the thermal contrasts found in the ocean is in the form of heat fluxes and these fluxes are critical in modulating the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL). Estimation based on data collected in situ show that in the warm side (north) of the oceanographic front the fluxes are more intense (latent heat: 62 W/m² and sensible heat: 0.6 W/m²) than in the cold side (south) (latent heat: 5.8 W/m² and sensible heat: -13.8 W/m²). In the South Atlantic Current (SAC) along the 30° S parallel, heat fluxes are directly related to the meandering characteristic of the current. The data collected in situ, in addition to allow heat flux estimates at a better spatial resolution, were used to develop a new method for estimating the heat energy exchanged between the atmosphere and the ocean caused by the presence of mesoscale oceanic structures. This methodology consists in the comparison of a radiosonde profile taken over waters of the structure of interest and another taken over waters which do not belong to this structure. The methodology was used to estimate the heat energy transfer between the atmosphere and the ocean over the top of three structures sampled in the OAS. The estimation of the heat energy transferred by a warm eddy detached from the BC points to an energy in the latent (sensible) form of 1.6 1017 J (-2.8 1016 J) which corresponds to approximately 0.011 % of the total heat energy of the eddy transferred to the atmosphere during the field experiment and 0.78 % transferred during the supposed lifetime of the eddy (3 months). Along the CSA two oceanic structures were studied: (i) a cold meander that receives from the atmosphere energy in the latent (sensible) form of 1.4 106 J/m2 (5.4 105 J/m2), and (ii) warmer waters associated with a detached eddy from the Agulhas Current (AC) that transfer to the atmosphe heat energy of approximately 4 106 J/m2 an 5.7 106 J/m2 in the latent and sensible forms, respectively. The estimation of heat energy transfer on top of mesoscale oceanic structures clearly demonstrate the importance of these structures for the heat exchanges between the ocean and the atmosphere and must be taken into account in future works about this subject in the SAO. A compreensão das interações entre oceano e atmosfera em regiões de frentes oceanográficas é de vital importância para o melhoramento de modelos numéricos de previsão do tempo e clima. No Oceano Atlântico Sul (OAS) o encontro entre as águas quentes da Corrente do Brasil (CB) com as águas frias da Corrente das Malvinas (CM), na região denominada Confluência Brasil-Malvinas (CBM), resulta em intensa atividade oceânica de mesoescala e, por esse motivo, essa região é considerada uma das mais energéticas do Oceano Global. As interações resultantes do contraste termal ao longo de regiões de frentes oceanográficas no OAS são investigadas neste trabalho através de estimativas de fluxos de calor baseadas em dados de satélite e dados coletados in situ. Os resultados do trabalho demonstram que a resposta aos contrastes termais encontrados no oceano se dá na forma de fluxos de calor e que esses fluxos são fundamentais na modulação da Camada Limite Atmosférica (CLA). As estimativas com base em dados coletados in situ demonstram que no lado quente (norte) da frente oceanográfica os fluxos são mais intensos (calor latente: 62 W/m² e calor sensível: 0,6 W/m²) que nos lado frio (sul) (calor latente: 5,8 W/m² e calor sensível: -13,8 W/m²). Na Corrente Sul Atlântica (CSA), ao longo do paralelo de 30° S, os fluxos de calor estão diretamente relacionados a característica meandrante da corrente. Os dados coletados in situ, além de possibilitarem estimativas de fluxo de calor com uma melhor resolução espacial, foram usados no desenvolvimento de uma nova metodologia para estimativa da energia calorífica trocada entre oceano e atmosfera em virtude da presença de estruturas oceânicas de mesoescala. Essa metodologia consiste na comparação entre um perfil de radiossonda tomado sobre águas da estrutura de interesse e outro tomado sobre águas que não pertencem a essa estrutura. A metodologia desenvolvida foi utilizada para determinar a transferência de energia calorífica entre oceano e atmosfera em três estruturas amostradas no OAS. A estimativa da energia calorífica transferida por um vórtice quente desprendido da CB aponta para uma energia na forma latente (sensível) de 1,6 1017 J (-2,8 1016 J) que corresponde a aproximadamente 0,011 % da energia calorífica total do vórtice transferida durante o experimento de campo e de 0,78 % da energia do vórtice transferidos durante o tempo suposto de vida do vórtice (3 meses). Ao longo da CSA, duas estruturas oceânicas foram estudadas: (i) um meandro frio que recebe da atmosfera uma energia na forma latente (sensível) de 1,4 106 J/m2 (5,4 105 J/m2) e (ii) águas mais quentes associadas a um vórtice desprendido da Corrente das Agulhas (CA) que transferem para a atmosfera uma energia calorífica de aproximadamente 4 106 J/m2 e 5,7 106 J/m2 nas formas latente e sensível, respectivamente. As estimativas da transferência de energia calorífica sobre estruturas oceânicas de mesoescala demonstram claramente a importância destas nas trocas de calor entre o oceano e a atmosfera e devem ser levadas em consideração em trabalhos futuros sobre o tema no OAS.

AIM: Water temperature plays an important role in ecological functioning and in controlling the biogeochemical processes of the aquatic system. Conventional water quality monitoring is expensive and time consuming. It is particularly challenging for large water bodies. Conversely, remote sensing can be considered a powerful tool to assess important properties of aquatic systems because it provides synoptic and frequent data acquisition over large areas. The objective of this study was to analyze time series of surface water temperature and heat flux to advance the understanding of temporal variations in a hydroelectric reservoir. METHOD: MODIS water-surface temperature (WST) level 2, 1 km nominal resolution data (MOD11L2, version 5) were used. All available clear-sky MODIS/Terra images from 2003 to 2008 were used, resulting in a total of 786 daytime and 473 nighttime images. Time series of surface water temperature was obtained computing the monthly mean in a 3×3 window of three reservoir selected sites: 1) near the dam, 2) at the centre of the reservoir and 3) in the confluence of the rivers. In-situ meteorological data from 2003 to 2008 were used to calculate surface energy budget time series. Cross-wavelet, coherence and phase analysis were carried out to compute the correlation between daytime and nighttime surface water temperatures and the computed heat fluxes. RESULTS: The monthly mean of the day-time WST shows lager variability than the night-time WST. All time series (daytime and nighttime) have a cyclical pattern, passing for a minimum (June - July) and a maximum (December and January). Fourier and the Wavelet Analysis were applied to analyze this cyclical pattern. The daytime time series, presents peaks in 4.5, 6 12 and 36 months and the nighttime WST shows the highest spectral density at 12, 6, 3 and 2 months. The multiple regression analysis shows that for daytime WST, the heat flux terms explain 89% of the annual variation (RMS = 0.89 °C, p < 0.0013). For nighttime, the heat flux terms explain 94% (RMS = 0.53 °C, p < 0.0002). CONCLUSION: The daytime WST and shortwave radiation presents a good agreement for periods of 6 (with shortwave retarded) and 12 months (with shortwave advanced); For nighttime WST and longwave the good agreement is present for 1, 3, 6 and 12 months, all with longwave advanced in relation to WST. OBJETIVO: A temperatura da água possui uma importante função ecológica e no controle de processos biogeoquímicos em um corpo d'água. O monitoramento convencional da qualidade da água geralmente é dispendioso e que consome muito tempo. Este é um problema particularmente interessante quando se esta estudando grandes áreas. Entretanto, ferramentas como o sensoriamento remoto pode ser considerado adequado no estudo destas áreas. O objetivo deste estudo foi analisar séries temporais de temperatura da água e dos fluxos de calor para melhorar o entendimento de suas variações temporais em reservatório hidrelétricos. MÉTODO: Neste trabalho, dados do sensor MODIS/Terra de temperatura da superfície da água (TSA) nível 2, 1 km de resolução nominal (MOD11L2, versão 5) foram utilizados. Todas as imagens, livres de nuvem, do MODIS/Terra de 2003 a 2008 foram utilizadas, resultando em 786 imagens tomadas durante o dia e 473 durante a noite. As séries temporais de temperatura da superfície da água foram obtidas por meio de médias mensais e janelas de 3×3 pixels em três áreas distintas do reservatório: 1) próximo a barragem, 2) região central do reservatório e 3) na confluência dos rios. Dados meteorológicos foram utilizados para a estimativa do balanço de calor no reservatório para os anos de 2003 a 2008. Uma análise de correlação entre as séries temporais de temperatura da água estimadas durante o dia e noite com os fluxos de calor. Os fluxos mais bem correlacionados foram verificados quanto sua ciclicidade com a variação de temperatura, por meio do uso do algoritmo de wavelet cruzada, coerência e fase. RESULTADOS: A média mensal de TSA diurna mostrou uma maior variabilidade se comparada com a série temporal de TSA noturna. Além disto, apresentam um ciclo sazonal bem marcado, passando por um mínimo durante os meses de Junho e Julho e um máximo nos meses de Dezembro e Janeiro. Para analisar este padrão, uma análise de Fourier e de Wavelet foi realizada. As séries temporais de TSA diurnas mostraram variabilidades cíclicas em 4,5, 6, 12 e 36 meses e para as noturnas em 2, 3, 6 e 12. A análise de correlação mostrou que os fluxos de calor correlacionados com a TSA diurna explicam 89% (RMS = 0.89 °C, p < 0.0013) e noturna 94% (RMS = 0.53 °C, p < 0.0002). CONCLUSÃO: A série temporal de TSA diurna e a radiação de onda curta apresentam picos de variabilidade centradas em 6 meses (com certo atraso de variabilidade por parte da radiação de onda curta) e 12 meses (com variabilidade avançada por parte da radiação de onda curta). Para a série temporal de TSA noturna, existe concordância com a radiação de onda longa nos períodos de 1, 3, 6 e 12 meses.

Verônica) em estufa de polietileno. O experimento foi realizado em uma estufa tipo túnel alto com cobertura de polietileno (100 mim de espessura) e em uma área externa, ambas com 35 m². Durante o ciclo da cultura, foram monitoradas as radiações global e refletida, saldo de radiação, fluxo de calor no solo e temperatura do ar (seca e úmida) nos dois meios. Utilizou-se um Datalogger que operou na freqüência de 1 Hz, armazenando médias de cinco minutos. A partir das integrações diárias das irradiâncias global (K¯) e refletida (K­), verificou-se que a transmissividade média da radiação global (K¯in / K¯ex) foi aproximadamente constante, em torno de 79,59%, enquanto a razão das radiações refletidas (K­in / K­ex) foi igual a 69,21% com coeficiente de variação de 8,47%. As curvas normalizadas do saldo de radiação de ondas curtas em relação à radiação global (K* / K¯), nos dois meios, mostraram ser aproximadamente constantes no início do ciclo e decrescentes no final. A relação (Rn/ K¯) foi maior no meio externo, em torno de 12%, a partir da fase em que a superfície verde da cultura cobriu o solo. O balanço médio (L*) de radiação de ondas longas foi maior no exterior, em torno de 50%. O balanço de energia, estimado em termos de fluxos verticais, mostrou, em média, que: no exterior, 83,07% do saldo de radiação foi convertido em calor latente (LE), 18,00% em fluxo de calor no solo (G) e 9,96% em calor sensível (H), enquanto que, no interior da estufa, 58,71% do saldo de radiação foi convertido em LE, 42,68% em H e 28,79% em G. The normalized curves of short-wave net radiation, in relation to the global radiation (K*/ K¯), found for both environments, were almost constant at the beginning of cycle; this relation decreased in the final stage of culture. The normalized relation (Rn/ K¯) was bigger in the external area, about 12%, when the green culture covered the soil surface. The long-wave radiation balance average (L*) was bigger outside, about 50%. The energy balance, estimated in terms of vertical fluxes, showed that, for the external area, in average, 83.07% of total net radiation was converted in latent heat evaporation (LE), and 18% in soil heat flux (G), and 9.96% in sensible heat (H), while inside of the greenhouse, 58.71% of total net radiation was converted in LE, 42.68% in H, and 28.79% in G. Global, reflected and net radiation, soil heat flux and air temperature (dry and humid) were measured during the crop cycle. A Datalogger, which operated at 1 Hz frequency, storing 5 minutes averages was utilized. The global (K¯) and reflected (K) radiations showed that the average transmission of global radiation (K¯in / K¯ex) was almost constant, near to 79.59%, while the average ratio of reflected radiation (Kin / Kex) was 69.21% with 8.47% standard-deviation. The normalized curves of short-wave net radiation, in relation to the global radiation (K*/ K¯), found for both environments, were almost constant at the beginning of cycle; this relation decreased in the final stage of culture. The normalized relation (Rn/ K¯) was bigger in the external area, about 12%, when the green culture covered the soil surface. The long-wave radiation balance average (L*) was bigger outside, about 50%. The energy balance, estimated in terms of vertical fluxes, showed that, for the external area, in average, 83.07% of total net radiation was converted in latent heat evaporation (LE), and 18% in soil heat flux (G), and 9.96% in sensible heat (H), while inside of the greenhouse, 58.71% of total net radiation was converted in LE, 42.68% in H, and 28.79% in G. Objetivou-se, neste trabalho, determinar os balanços de radiação e energia da cultura de alface (Lactuca sativa, L. cv. Verônica) em estufa de polietileno. O experimento foi realizado em uma estufa tipo túnel alto com cobertura de polietileno (100 mim de espessura) e em uma área externa, ambas com 35 m². Durante o ciclo da cultura, foram monitoradas as radiações global e refletida, saldo de radiação, fluxo de calor no solo e temperatura do ar (seca e úmida) nos dois meios. Utilizou-se um Datalogger que operou na freqüência de 1 Hz, armazenando médias de cinco minutos. A partir das integrações diárias das irradiâncias global (K¯) e refletida (K), verificou-se que a transmissividade média da radiação global (K¯in / K¯ex) foi aproximadamente constante, em torno de 79,59%, enquanto a razão das radiações refletidas (Kin / Kex) foi igual a 69,21% com coeficiente de variação de 8,47%. As curvas normalizadas do saldo de radiação de ondas curtas em relação à radiação global (K* / K¯), nos dois meios, mostraram ser aproximadamente constantes no início do ciclo e decrescentes no final. A relação (Rn/ K¯) foi maior no meio externo, em torno de 12%, a partir da fase em que a superfície verde da cultura cobriu o solo. O balanço médio (L*) de radiação de ondas longas foi maior no exterior, em torno de 50%. O balanço de energia, estimado em termos de fluxos verticais, mostrou, em média, que: no exterior, 83,07% do saldo de radiação foi convertido em calor latente (LE), 18,00% em fluxo de calor no solo (G) e 9,96% em calor sensível (H), enquanto que, no interior da estufa, 58,71% do saldo de radiação foi convertido em LE, 42,68% em H e 28,79% em G.
