Optimal omega-3 status, influenced by increased intake of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), is vital for physiological health. This study investigated the impact of ad libitum fish oil supplementation on the omega-3 status of female athletes in a professional rugby league team during a competitive season. Twenty-four (n = 24) athletes participated, and their omega-3 status was assessed using the Omega-3 Index (O3I) and arachidonic acid (AA) to EPA ratio through finger-prick blood samples taken at the start and end of the season. They were given access to a fish oil supplement (PILLAR Performance, Australia) with a recommended daily dose of four capsules per day (2,160 mg EPA and 1,440 mg docosahexaenoic acid). At the beginning of the season, the group mean O3I was 4.77% (95% confidence interval [CI: 4.50, 5.04]) and the AA to EPA ratio was 14.89 (95% CI [13.22, 16.55]). None of the athletes had an O3I exceeding 8%. By the season's end, the O3I was a significantly increased to 7.28% (95% CI [6.64, 7.93], p <.0001) and AA to EPA ratio significantly decreased to a mean of 6.67 (95% CI [5.02, 8.31], p <.0001), driven primarily by the significant increase in EPA of +1.14% (95% CI [0.77, 1.51], p <.0001). However, these changes were varied between the athletes and most likely due to compliance. This study has demonstrated that using the objective O3I feedback scale is possible with elite female rugby athletes, but individual strategies will be required to achieve daily intake targets of EPA + DHA. Summary: This study explores the potential of hydrothermal extraction as an innovative valorisation method for the simultaneous production of gelatin and fish oil from fish byproducts. It offers an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional solvent‐based techniques by minimising the use of chemical solvents and water. We researched various major commercial freshwater fish species: striped catfish, catfish, and tilapia, and achieved a gelatin product that reflects commercial standards in chemical structure, gel strength, and pH level. The striped catfish gelatin showed the highest gel strength and viscosity (66.01 ± 0.83 g bloom and 15.3 ± 0.1 cP), but was produced at a lower yield than the catfish gelatin. On the other hand, striped catfish produced the highest yield of fish oil (13.56 ± 0.21%) and has the highest omega 3 content (3.72 ± 0.02%) than other fish oil. This innovative study demonstrates the potential of hydrothermal extraction as a sustainable method for producing gelatin and fish oil, offering eco‐friendly and nutritional benefits across a range of applications. Aim: To investigate the association between fish oil supplementation and subsequent risk of chronic kidney disease (CKD) among patients with diabetes, and further evaluate the mediation effect of typical glycolipid and inflammatory biomarkers. Methods: In total, 24 497 patients with diabetes from the UK Biobank were included. Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to estimate the hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for CKD risk, and the rate advancement period was calculated to quantify and communicate the impact of fish oil upon that risk. In addition, we also used mediation analysis to assess the mediating role of plasma biomarkers. Results: Overall, 7122 patients reported taking fish oil supplements. During a mean of 11.3 years of follow‐up, 3533 CKD cases occurred. In the fully adjusted model, fish oil use was inversely associated with the incidence of CKD (HR 0.90; 95% CI: 0.83, 0.97), which was mediated by serum levels of HbA1c (4.7%), C‐reactive protein (CRP) (3.4%) and high‐density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL‐C) (2.3%). Participants who took fish oil supplements displayed the same risk of CKD events, but that risk was delayed by approximately 2.79 years compared with non‐users of fish oil. Conclusions: Our findings advocate the beneficial role of fish oil use in preventing CKD among patients with diabetes, which may be mediated by serum levels of HbA1c, CRP and HDL‐C, and support public health policies aiming to promote fish oil supplementation for the prevention of diabetes complications. In the past decade, insect meal has gained popularity in the animal feed industry, particularly in aquafeed, due to rising costs and decreased availability of fish meal (FM) and fish oil. Initially met with skepticism, insect meal is now seen as a promising ingredient because of its high nutrient profile. Research worldwide is exploring its potential as a FM replacement. Insects are abundant, nutritious, and environmentally friendly, as they can be reared on organic waste, minimizing the need for land, water, and energy. This research aims at obtaining a comprehensive and in‐depth understanding of the current status and research trend patterns in this research field. To achieve this goal, this study conducts a mini systematic review and scientometric analysis of the global research published from 2013 to 2022 on the usage of insect meal in aquaculture. In the scientometric analysis, a total of 354 papers published by 1800 authors in 124 different journals from the Web of Science (WoS) core collection were analyzed, evaluating the number of publications, most relevant authors, organizations, top cited countries, most globally cited publications, and trending research themes in this field. The result showed that the University of Turin was the leading organization in insect meal research, whereas aquaculture was the leading journal, and author Laura Gasco was the prominent researcher in this field in the studied time frame (2013–2022). Italy was the leading country in Europe, while China dominated Asia in terms of the number of publications. The annual growth rate in insect meal research was found to be positive (23.11%), with 36.95 average citations per document. This study helps practitioners and scholars understand the current state of insect meal in aquaculture and identifies research requirements that can benefit both academia and industry. Aquacultured carnivorous species consume most of the world's fishmeal and fish oil (FMFO), which itself is primarily derived from small pelagic fish. This has raised concerns about the practice's impact on wild fish stocks, ecosystems, and coastal communities that rely on these fish. The aquaculture industry claims a decreasing dependence on wild fish, relying on the Fish In:Fish Out (FIFO) metric as a ratio of the quantity of wild fish required for farmed fish production. This is misleading because it usually assumes constant FM or FO yields, inclusion rates and feed conversion ratios, which vary widely. Thus, a constant FIFO value for a given species cannot be assumed. Furthermore, low FIFO values resulting from averaging carnivores and herbivores conceal the high feed requirements of carnivore species. The increasing use of FMFO from by-products does not demonstrate a decreased use of wild fish but rather reflects a growing demand for FMFO, particularly for the fast growing and valuable salmon and shrimp farming industries. Background: Aquaculture, traditionally a form of biotechnology, has evolved to integrate innovative biotechnological applications, such as advanced feed formulations, aimed at improving the growth performance and health of farmed fish species. In the present study, the effects of feeding rainbow trout with novel feed formulations were investigated. Fish growth, gut and liver morphology, the concentration of fatty acids in the fillet, and volatile fatty acids in the gut were assessed. The study also validated scenarios from in vivo experiments using a nutrient-based model called FEEDNETICS™. This globally used model serves as a tool for data interpretation and decision support in the context of precision fish farming. Methods: Alternative protein and oil sources, including poultry by-product meal (PBM) and natural algae oil, were explored as sustainable replacements for fishmeal (FM) and fish oil (FO). A 90-day feeding trial was conducted using rainbow trout, comparing two isoproteic, isolipidic and isoenergetic diets. The control diet contained 15% FM, 5% PBM, and 8% FO, while the test diet replaced FM with 15% PBM and 5% feather meal hydrolysate (FMH), and fully substituted FO with VeraMaris® natural algae oil and rapeseed oil. Results: PBM successfully replaced FM protein without negatively affecting feed intake, growth performance or feed utilization in trout. The combination of PBM and natural algae oil was well tolerated by the trout and showed no negative effects on gut health. A detailed analysis of fatty acids in the fillet revealed that PUFAs of the n3 and n6 series were significantly higher in the PBM group than in the FM group. Values of fatty acid-related health indexes, including atherogenicity index, and thrombogenicity index, confirmed the high nutritional value of trout filet, thus representing a healthy product for human. In addition, the predictions using the FEEDNETICS™ indicated that the tested novel alternative formulations are economically viable. The validation of the model for fish growth resulted in a Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE) of 8%. Conclusions: The FEEDNETICS™ application enhances our ability to optimize feeding strategies and improve production efficiency in the aquaculture industry. Background: The effect of supplements on mortality risk in patients with cancer remains uncertain and has scarcely been investigated in subgroups of patients with varying characteristics. This study aimed to investigate the association between two popular supplements, fish oil and glucosamine, and mortality risk in a large population-based cohort and determine whether cardiovascular health and clinical prognosis influence these associations. Methods: This prospective cohort study analyzed the data of UK Biobank participants who were diagnosed with cancer. The associations of fish oil and glucosamine consumption with mortality were analyzed using Cox proportional hazards models. Subgroup analyses were performed to assess the effects of Life Essential 8 [LE8] scores (a measure of cardiovascular health) and cancer prognosis (grouped according to the survival rates of specific cancer types) on the associations between supplement use and mortality. Results: This analysis included 14,920 participants (mean age = 59.9 years; 60.2% female). One third (34.1%) of the participants reported using fish oil, and one fifth (20.5%) reported using glucosamine. Over a median follow-up of 12.0 years, 2,708 all-cause deaths were registered. The use of fish oil was associated with reduced risks of all-cause mortality (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR] = 0.89, 95% Confidence Interval [CI] = 0.81–0.97) and cancer mortality (aHR = 0.89, 95% CI = 0.81–0.98). Similarly, glucosamine use was associated with reduced risks of all-cause mortality (aHR = 0.83, 95% CI = 0.74–0.92) and cancer mortality (aHR = 0.83, 95% CI = 0.74–0.93) in the fully adjusted model. Subgroup analyses revealed that the protective effects of fish oil and glucosamine against mortality risk were only observed in patients with LE8 scores lower than the mean score or a poor cancer prognosis. Additionally, the association between glucosamine use and a reduced risk of CVD-related mortality was only observed in patients with lower LE8 scores. Conclusions: This large cohort study identified the potential differential impact of LE8 scores and cancer prognosis on the associations of fish oil and glucosamine supplementation with survival in patients with cancer. The rise in fisheries production worldwide has caused a remarkable increase in associated anthropogenic waste. This poses significant concerns due to adverse environmental impacts and economic losses. Owing to its renewability, high abundance, and potential as a rich source of many nutrients and bioactive compounds, strategies have been developed to convert fish waste into different value-added products. Conventional and improved methods have been used for the extraction of biomolecules from fish waste. The extracted fish waste-derived value-added products such as enzymes, peptides, fish oil, etc. have been used to fortify different food products. This review aims to provide an overview of the nature and composition of fish waste, strategies for extracting biomolecules from fish waste, and the potential application of fish waste as a source of calcium and other nutrients in food fortification and animal feed has been discussed. In context to fishery waste mitigation, valorization, and circular bioeconomy approach are gaining momentum, aiming to eliminate waste while producing high-quality value-added food and feed products from fishery discards. The incidence of metabolic syndrome is rising worldwide, and an estimated 40% of adults are affected by the condition. Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of connected cardiometabolic conditions including obesity, impaired fasting glucose, hypertension, decreased levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and elevated serum triglycerides. Metabolic syndrome increases the long-term risk of both type 2 diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease. This condition is driven by insulin resistance and generally results from a combination of overnutrition and sedentary lifestyle, which serve to increase adiposity and cause metabolic abnormalities. As such, lifestyle change forms the foundation of metabolic syndrome treatment. This article reviews diet and exercise interventions that form this foundation, along with natural substances that have evidence of benefit in people with metabolic syndrome, including curcumin, melatonin, vitamin D, berberine, and fish oil. In the present scenario, obesity is a challenging health problem and its prevalence along with comorbidities are on the rise around the world. Ingestion of fish becomes trendy in daily meals. Recent research has shown that marine fish oil (FO) (found in tuna, sardines, and mackerel) may offer an alternative method for reducing obesity and problems associated with it. Marine FO rich in long‐chain omega‐3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC n‐3 PUFA) and long‐chain omega‐6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC n‐6 PUFA) plays an important role in reducing abnormalities associated with the metabolic syndrome and has a variety of disease‐fighting properties, including cardioprotective activity, anti‐atherosclerotic, anti‐obesity, anti‐cancer, anti‐inflammatory activity. Studies in rodents and humans have indicated that LC n‐3 PUFA potentially elicit a number of effects which might be useful for reducing obesity, including suppression of appetite, improvements in circulation, enhanced fat oxidation, energy expenditure, and reduced fat deposition. This review discusses the interplay between inflammation and obesity, and their subsequent regulation via the beneficial role of marine FO, suggesting an alternative dietary strategy to ameliorate obesity and obesity‐associated chronic diseases. Background Methods Results Conclusions The beneficial effects of n‐3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) in reducing high blood triglyceride (TG) levels have been well demonstrated. This study aimed to investigate the effect of chia seeds on blood TG and its associated cardiometabolic factors in hypertriglyceridaemic individuals.This three‐group randomised controlled trial compared the effects of a low‐calorie diet (n = 22), a low‐calorie diet with chia seeds (30 g/day, n = 22) or a low‐calorie diet with concentrated fish oil (1.8 g/day of n‐3 long‐chain PUFAs, n = 22) in patients with hypertriglyceridaemia. Anthropometrics, fasting blood lipids, proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9, insulin, adiponectin, leptin and interleukin‐6 levels were measured.After 8 weeks, the mean reduction in weight exhibited by the three groups was not statistically different (2.0, 2.7 and 2.8 kg, respectively, for the control, fish oil and chia seed groups). The plasma TG decreased in both the chia seed and fish oil groups in comparison to the control group (p = 0.001). However, no significant difference was observed between the chia seed and fish oil groups (change from baseline mean: 145.2 and 136.7 mg/dL for the chia seed and fish oil groups, respectively). The consumption of chia seeds was associated with a reduction in diastolic blood pressure (change from baseline mean: 8.4 mmHg) compared to the other two groups. No significant alterations were observed in the other blood biochemical factors between the three groups.In people with moderate hypertriglyceridaemia, a low‐calorie diet with 30 g of chia seeds compared to fish oil supplements containing 1.8 g of long‐chain PUFAs has a similar effect on reducing plasma TG levels, whereas it has a higher blood pressure–lowering effect. A range of sustainability metrics have been proposed over the years that calculate the various efficiencies (and inefficiencies) of the use of feed in animal production (terrestrial livestock and aquaculture) and more specifically the utilization of the marine ingredient content of that feed. Like all metrics though, they come with some assumptions and are only as good as the reliability of the data feeding into them. The ones commonly used in the marine ingredients sector include eFIFO, FFDR, FIFO and FCR. In this review the basis of each of these metrics, aspects of their origins and each of their short comings is discussed. It is noted that many of these metrics fail to recognize the foundational role that marine ingredients play in supporting global "blue-food" production when misapplied. Subsequently an alternative strategy is proposed to assess the sustainability of marine ingredients based on a life cycle assessment (LCA) approach. With this shift we provide the reasoning behind this move toward a more transparent assessment process and how this will better support aquaculture to move forward by being able to assess the sustainability of the use of all feed ingredient resources on an equivalent basis. Effect of sunflower oil (SFO) + linseed oil (LnO) (1:1) blend as a replacement for fish oil (FO) in the diet of Labeo rohita (initial weight 20.37 ± 0.16 g) was evaluated for a 90-day feeding trial. Five isonitrogenous (30% crude protein) and isolipidic (11% crude lipid) experimental diets with different levels of SFO + LnO (0, 25, 50, 75, and 100%) were formulated. Growth performance, survival, and feed utilization were not significantly affected by the dietary treatments. Similarly, FO replacement did significantly influence hepatosomatic index (HSI), viscerosomatic index (VSI), and the whole body proximate composition. However, significant changes were observed in fatty acid composition (P < 0.05). In the muscle and liver, saturated fatty acids (SFA) and n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) decreased, while monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) and n-6 PUFAs increased with the increasing rate of replacement. Despite the reduction in eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) as a result of the replacement of dietary FO, these fatty acids were still detected in considerable amounts even after total replacement. Hematology parameters, serum biochemistry, serum lipid profile, and plasma stress biomarkers were not significantly influenced by the dietary treatments. Antioxidant enzyme activities did not significantly change; however, lipid peroxidation level was significantly reduced by the FO replacement with SFO + LnO blend. In conclusion, substituting fish oil with SFO + LnO blend demonstrated promising results, maintaining growth, feed efficiency, and overall health status in L. rohita. Replacement of dietary FO with SFO + LnO resulted in a significant reduction in LC-PUFAs such as EPA and DHA in fish; however, these fatty acids were still detected in a considerable amount even at total replacement, which confirmed the capacity of L. rohita to bioconvert dietary LNA to EPA and DHA in fish. Background: Pediatric patients with intestinal failure require long‐term parenteral nutrition owing to impaired enteral nutrition absorption. A potential complication is essential fatty acid deficiency (EFAD), resulting from decreased linoleic and α‐linolenic acid concentrations and defined by an increased triene:tetraene ratio (TTR; Mead acid:arachidonic acid). Historically, soybean oil lipid emulsion (SOLE) was the only commercially available parenteral lipid in the United States. Recently, a composite lipid emulsion (CLE) and fish oil lipid emulsion (FOLE) received US Food and Drug Administration approval. This study investigated whether lipid emulsion regimen impacts EFAD incidence in pediatric patients with intestinal failure. Methods: This study was a 10‐year retrospective cohort study of pediatric patients with intestinal failure who received parenteral SOLE, CLE, or FOLE. The primary outcome was EFAD incidence, defined as a TTR ≥ 0.2. Secondary outcomes included TTR ≥ 0.05, cholestasis incidence, lipid dose effect on EFAD incidence, and fatty acid parameter differences. Results: A total of 144 fatty acid profiles from 47 patients were reviewed. EFAD did not occur in any lipid emulsion group. There were no differences in the incidence of TTR ≥ 0.05 or cholestasis. The effect of dose could not be evaluated because of no EFAD incidence. Lastly, although each group had varied fatty acid parameters, none saw decreased essential fatty acid levels. Conclusion: This study found that, with close monitoring, the lipid emulsion regimen did not impact EFAD incidence. An increase in systemic inflammation (inflammaging) is one of the hallmarks of aging. Epigenetic (DNA methylation) clocks can quantify the degree of biological aging and this can be reversed by lifestyle and pharmacological intervention. We aimed to investigate whether a multi-component nutritional supplement could reduce systemic inflammation and epigenetic age in healthy older adults. We recruited 80 healthy older participants (mean age ± SD: 71.85 ± 6.23; males = 31, females = 49). Blood and saliva were obtained pre and post a 12-week course of a multi-component supplement, containing: Vitamin B3, Vitamin C, Vitamin D, Omega 3 fish oils, Resveratrol, Olive fruit phenols and Astaxanthin. Plasma GDF-15 and C-reactive protein (CRP) concentrations were quantified as markers of biological aging and inflammation respectively. DNA methylation was assessed in whole blood and saliva and used to derive epigenetic age using various clock algorithms. No difference between the epigenetic and chronological ages of participants was observed pre- and post-treatment by the blood-based Horvath or Hannum clocks, or the saliva-based InflammAge clock. However, in those with epigenetic age acceleration of ≥ 2 years at baseline, a significant reduction in epigenetic age (p = 0.015) and epigenetic age acceleration (p = 0.0058) was observed post-treatment using the saliva-based InflammAge clock. No differences were observed pre- and post-treatment in plasma GDF-15 and CRP, though participants with CRP indicative of an elevated cardiovascular disease risk (hsCRP ≥ 3µg/ml), had a reduction in CRP post-supplementation (p = 0.0195). Fat supplements are well known for their multiple beneficial effects on ruminant health, reproduction and productivity, and as a source for certain bioactive compounds in ruminant products. On the other hand, numerous phytochemicals have demonstrated the potential to improve rumen fermentation through modifying the volatile fatty acid (VFA) pattern to favour those with greater energy efficiency, boosting microbial protein synthesis, and decreasing methane emission and ruminal ammonia concentration. Savory is an aromatic plant rich in various phytochemicals (mainly carvacrol and flavonoids) that can alter ruminal metabolism of dietary fatty acids, potentially increasing the production of some bioactive compounds such as conjugated linoleic acids (CLAs). This study aimed to investigate combined effects of oil type (fish oil (FO) versus soybean oil (SO)) and the inclusion of savory (Satureja khuzistanica) plant (SP) in the diet on total tract digestibility of nutrients, rumen fermentation, milk yield and milk fatty acid profile in dairy cattle. Eight multiparous lactating Holstein cows were used in a replicated 4 × 4 Latin square design experiment with four diets and four 21-d periods. During each experimental period consisted of 14 days of adaptation and a 7-day sampling period, cows were randomly assigned to one of the four dietary treatments: the diet supplemented with 2% (DM basis) fish oil (FOD) or soybean oil (SOD), the FOD or SOD plus 370 g DM/d/head SP (FODs, SODs, respectively). The experimental diets were arranged in a 2 × 2 factorial design, with the fat sources as the first and SP as the second factor. The FO-supplemented diets had lower dry matter intake (DMI) and higher total tract digestibility than SO-supplemented diets (P < 0.05), and including SP in the diet improved total tract digestibility of dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), ether extract (EE), and non-fibrous carbohydrates (NFC) (P < 0.05) without negatively affecting DMI. Rumen pH was lower with SO than with FO diets (P < 0.01) and increased with SP inclusion in the diet (P < 0.05). Total protozoa count and ruminal ammonia concentration decreased, and the branched-chain VFA (BCVFA) proportion increased with SP inclusion in the diet (P < 0.05). Milk production, as well as the concentration and yield of milk components (except lactose concentration) were higher with SO than with FO diets (P < 0.05), but these variables remained unaffected by SP. The milk concentrations of both non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) and beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) were lower with SO compared to FO diets, and these variables were reduced by SP (P < 0.01). The proportions of both mono- and polyunsaturated FA (MUFA and PUFA, respectively) in milk were higher with FO than with SO diets (P < 0.01), and their proportions increased by SP at the expense of saturated FA (SFA) (P < 0.01). Including SP in the diet increased the proportions of all the milk n-3 FA (C18:3c, C20:5, and C22:6) by 21%, 40%, and 97%, respectively, and those of conjugated linoleic acids (C18:2 (c9,t11-CLA) and C18:2 (t10,c12-CLA)) by 23% and 62%, respectively. There was no interaction between oil type and SP for the assessed variables. Fish oil, despite reducing milk production and milk components, was more effective than soybean oil in enriching milk with healthy FA. AbstractThe use of dietary supplements by cancer patients is common but contentious, particularly during chemotherapy. Few studies have investigated this for ovarian cancer. In a prospective study of women with ovarian cancer, dietary supplement use was collected through questionnaires. Data on the use of supplements were available for 421 women before diagnosis, during chemotherapy, and after chemotherapy completion. Predictors of changes in supplement use were investigated using logistic regression. The use of ≥1 supplement pre-diagnosis, during, and after chemotherapy completion was reported by 72%, 57%, and 68% of women, respectively. Multivitamins, vitamin D, and fish oils were the most commonly used supplements at all time points. The supplements most commonly discontinued during treatment were fish oils (69% of pre-diagnosis users) and multivitamins (53% of users); while 9%–10% of pre-diagnosis non-users initiated vitamin D and multivitamins. Predictors of supplement initiation during chemotherapy included pre-diagnosis use of medications, such as statins (Odds Ratio, OR = 4.12, 95% confidence interval, CI = 1.28–13.3), antidepressants (5.39, 1.18–24.7), acetaminophen (3.13, 1.05–9.33), and NSAIDs (2.15, 0.81–5.72). The total substitution of fishmeal (FM) and fish oil (FO) with sustainable feed ingredients, while maintaining acceptable growth performances and fish composition, is a challenge. Mussels have a high protein content, with essential amino acid and fatty acid (FA) profiles similar to those of FM. This study aimed to assess the potential to rear gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata) on a plant-based feed (without FM and FO) to which mussels were added. Subsequent effects on growth performance, protein content, and FA concentrations were studied. Juvenile gilthead seabream were reared for 46 days in water temperature of 21°C, in a recirculated aquaculture system composed of three fish tanks, each corresponding to one treatment: in the FMFO treatment, 342 fish were fed a commercial feed that contained FM and FO; in the plant-based feed (PBF) treatment, 345 fish were fed an experimental feed that contained only plant-based ingredients; in the mussel feed (MF) treatment, 342 fish were fed the feed from PBF supplemented with fresh mussel flesh from which the shells had been removed. Fish weighed a mean of 6.7 ± 1.3 g at stocking in each treatment. At harvest, the mean weight of fish from FMFO and MF were significantly different (23.1 ± 4.3 and 23.1 ± 5.2 g, respectively) than that from PBF (15.5 ± 3.6 g) (p < .05). Compared to the feed from FMFO, the feed from PBF decreased the percentages of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), and saturated FA (14:0, 16:0) in fish, but increased those of 18:1, 18:2 n-6 and 18:3 n-3 FA. Compared to the feed from PBF, the feed from MF increased the EPA+DHA concentration in fish by 21%. Thus, adding fresh mussels to a plant-based feed yielded similar growth performances and survival rate as a commercial feed. This study was performed to determine the influence of fish oil, an omega-3 fatty acids source, supplemented to diets of goats throughout all stages of gestation on the growth and milk production of weaned female kids. Eighty German Fawn (75%) x Hair (25%) crossbred goats were randomly assigned to treatment (fish oil, FiO group) and control (Rumen protected fat, RPF group) groups during the first half of pregnancy. Subsequently, the FiO group was further allocated into FiO-FiO and FiO-RPF subgroups and RPF group was further divided into RPF-FiO and RPF-RPF subgroups containing 20 goats in each during the second half of pregnancy. The growth and feed intake of 41 female kids (aged 75.1 ± 6.73 days, with a mean live weight of 11.6 ± 3.00 kg) were recorded for a 98 day post-weaning, In the continuation of the study, live weight changes, milk yield and composition of young female goats from mating to the second month of lactation and the growth of female kids until weaning were studied for a total of 210 days. Maternal nutrition slightly influenced the live weight gain of female kids over a 98-day investigation period (p = 0.070). When growth performance was considered, a higher feed conversion efficiency of female offspring was determined in RPF-FiO (5.52) treatment group compare to female kids in other treatment groups (p = 0.086). However, the maternal feeding system significantly affected live weight in the RPF-FiO treatment group during the mating period (P = 0.054). Concerning the feed intake, maternal nutrition significantly affected the feed intake of female kids (p < 0.01) with the highest feed consumption in the FiO-RPF group. The findings of this study have shown that fish oil enriched diet given to goats during gestation improved daily live weight changes and total live weight gain of female kids despite the initial disadvantage after weaning. At mating time, the live weight of young female goats in the RPF-FiO treatment group, which exhibited the highest feed conversion ratio during the 98-day study, was higher than the remaining treatment groups. Maternal nutrition had no effect on milk yield or milk components in young goats during lactation. Hybrid lemon fin barb is a crossed product between silver barb (Barbonymus gonionotus) and lemon fin barb (Hypsibarbus wetmorei). In the present study, the optimum dietary lipid requirement of larval hybrid lemon fin barb was examined using a total of 90 hybrid larvae (L) of 3-day-old (0.36 ± 0.01 mg). The larvae were stocked in triplicated 90 L tanks and fed with micro diets containing 0, 4, 8, 12, and 16% (FO 0, 4, 8, 12 and 16) dietary lipid levels for 20 days. While hybrid larvae fed non-lipid diet showed lowered survival and growth, larvae fed FO12 diet increased (p < .05) in weight gain, total length gain, specific growth rate, and protein efficiency ratio after 20 days. Hybrid larvae’s whole-body lipid content was increased with increasing dietary lipid level. Hybrid larvae consisted of significantly improved (p < .05) eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), and n-3 fatty acid contents at 12% dietary lipid. Excessive dietary lipids resulted in lipid droplets in enterocytes and swollen hepatocytes. The hybrid larvae fed non-lipid diet had shrunken hepatocytes. Fishmeal and fish oil have been the main sources of protein and fatty acid for aquaculture fish. However, their increasing price and low sustainability have led the aquafeed industry to seek sustainable alternative feedstuffs to meet the nutritional requirements of fish and improve their health and performance. Plant proteins have been successfully used to replace fishery derivatives in aquafeeds, but the presence of anti-nutritional substances is a potential drawback of this approach. Thus, it has been reported that phytate breakdown can be caused by feed supplementation with exogenous phytase. The inclusion of microalgae has been proposed to improve gut functionality in fish fed diets with a high vegetable protein content. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect on the growth and gut microbiota of European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) juveniles of a diet containing a blend of microalgae (Arthrospira platensis and Nannochloropsis gaditana) and different concentrations of phytase. An 83-day feeding trial was conducted, comprising four experimental diets with 2.5% microalgae and 500, 1,000, 2,000, or 10,000 phytase units (FTU)/kg feed and a microalgae- and phytase-free control diet. At the end of the trial, a significantly increased body weight was observed in fish fed the diet with the highest phytase concentration (10,000 FTU/kg) versus controls, although the gut bacterial composition did not differ from controls in alpha or beta diversity with either majority (Weighted UniFrac) or minority bacterial strains (Unweighted UniFrac). In comparison to the control group, the groups fed diets with 1,000 or 2,000 FTU/kg diets had a lower alpha diversity (Shannon's diversity index), while those fed diets with 500 FTU/kg or 1,000 FTU/kg showed distinct clusters in beta diversity (involving minority ASVs). According to these findings, the diet containing the 2.5% microalgae blend with 10,000 FTU/kg may be useful to increase the aquafeed quality and sustain the growth performance of juvenile European seabass. The research introduces a novel method for creating drug-loaded hydrogel beads that target anti-aging, anti-oxidative, and anti-inflammatory effects, addressing the interconnected processes underlying various pathological conditions. The study focuses on the development of hydrogel beads containing anti-aging compounds, antioxidants, and anti-inflammatory drugs to effectively mitigate various processes. The synthesis, characterization and in vitro evaluations, and potential applications of these multifunctional hydrogel beads are discussed. A polymeric alginate-orange peel extract (1:1) hydrogel was synthesized for encapsulating fish oil. Beads prepared with variable fish oil concentrations (0.1, 0.3, and 0.5 ml) were characterized, showing no significant decrease in size i.e., 0.5 mm and a reduction in pore size from 23 to 12 µm. Encapsulation efficiency reached up to 98% within 2 min, with controlled release achieved upto 45 to 120 min with increasing oil concentration, indicating potential for sustained delivery. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy confirmed successful encapsulation by revealing peak shifting, interaction between constituents. In vitro degradation studies showed the hydrogel's biodegradability improved from 30 to 120 min, alongside anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidative, anti-collagenase and anti-elastase activities, cell proliferation rate enhanced after entrapping fish oil. In conclusion, the synthesized hydrogel beads are a promising drug delivery vehicle because they provide stable and effective oil encapsulation with controlled release for notable anti-aging and regenerative potential. Targeted delivery for inflammatory and oxidative stress-related illnesses is one set of potential uses. The current study aims to comprehend the effect of the various combinations of 3,4‐dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (3,4‐DHPA) and its esters in varying molar ratios on retarding oxidation in bulk refined fish oil in the presence of 0.3% w/w water. All the esters and 3,4‐DHPA exhibited better performance than the synthetic antioxidant butylated hydroxytoluene. In the presence of trace water, the parent compound was found to have a synergistic effect with hexyl ester when used at a molar ratio of 2:1, respectively, exhibiting a higher percent reduction among all the esters and their combinations. The study also showed that the presence of extraneous water can significantly accelerate the oxidation (twofold) in a bulk fish oil system. This suggests that the microenvironment of the oil is altered when water is present and that association colloids play a key role in enhancing the rate of oxidation. Thus, while designing a competent mixture of antioxidants, the specific site of oxidation involved and the surface‐active components should be taken into consideration to efficiently retard oxidation. Practical Applications: Analyzing the impact of trace amounts of water on the efficiency of natural antioxidants, including 3,4‐DHPA and its lipophilic esters, helps to comprehend the required optimal antioxidant concentrations for such a dynamic bulk oil system. Fish oil has been reported to have positive health effects because it is rich in n-3 essential fatty acids. This study aimed to determine the optimal conditions for achieving a high oil yield and omega-3 content from milkfish by-products using ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) combined with a d-limonene solvent. The Box-Behnken design (BBD) combined with response surface methodology was successfully used to determine the optimum extraction conditions for omega-3 fatty acids based on several factors: Temperature (30, 60 and 90 °C), solvent-to-sample ratio (2:1, 4:1 and 6:1 mL/g) and time (6, 38 and 70 min). The ANOVA results showed that sonication time (p < 0.05) and temperature (p < 0.05) had a significant influence on omega-3 fatty acids and the yield of extracted oil. The optimal extraction conditions for UAE were 68 min, 84 °C, and a solvent-to-sample ratio of 3:1 mL/g resulting in high oil recovery (21.95 %) containing omega-3 compounds (12.50 %). Additionally, the resulting oil was also further characterized by quality parameters (acid, peroxide, anisidine-total oxidation and iodine values) as well as the fatty acid composition. In patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and in animal models, the increased accumulation of amyloid β (Aβ) in retinal blood vessels strongly correlates with brain amyloid deposits and cognitive decline. The accumulation of Aβ in blood vessels may result from impaired transcytosis and a dysfunctional ocular glymphatic system in AD. High-dose fish oil (FO) supplementation has been shown to significantly change the expression of major facilitator superfamily domain-containing protein 2a (Mfsd2a), a key regulator of transcytosis, and Aquaporin 4 (Aqp4), an essential component of the glymphatic system in the retinas of WT mice. We examined the expression of Mfsd2a and Aqp4 in the retinas of 4-month-old 5xFAD female mice supplemented with high-dose FO for three weeks. There was a significant increase in Mfsd2a expression in 5xFAD retinas supplemented with FO compared to control 5xFAD mice. Additionally, the increase in Aqp4 expression observed in 4-month-old 5xFAD retinas, indicative of an impaired glymphatic system, was significantly decreased. Simultaneously, Aβ accumulation in 5xFAD retinal blood vessels was reduced following FO supplementation. These findings suggest that high-dose FO supplementation could serve as an adjunct in developing new treatments aimed at improving the regulation of transcytosis or the function of the glymphatic system in the AD retina. Lung cancer and cachexia are the leading causes of cancer-related deaths worldwide. Cachexia is manifested by weight loss and white adipose tissue (WAT) atrophy. Limited nutritional supplements are conducive to lung cancer patients, whereas the underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. In this study, we used a murine cancer cachexia model to investigate the effects of a nutritional formula (NuF) rich in fish oil and selenium yeast as an adjuvant to enhance the drug efficacy of an EGFR inhibitor (Tarceva). In contrast to the healthy control, tumor-bearing mice exhibited severe cachexia symptoms, including tissue wasting, hypoalbuminemia, and a lower food efficiency ratio. Experimentally, Tarceva reduced pEGFR and HIF-1α expression. NuF decreased the expression of pEGFR and HIF-2α, suggesting that Tarceva and NuF act differently in prohibiting tumor growth and subsequent metastasis. NuF blocked LLC tumor-induced PTHrP and expression of thermogenic factor UCP1 and lipolytic enzymes (ATGL and HSL) in WAT. NuF attenuated tumor progression, inhibited PTHrP-induced adipose tissue browning, and maintained adipose tissue integrity by modulating heat shock protein (HSP) 72. Simple Summary: In this study, the effects of fish oil supplementation on the growth performance, physiological and biochemical indicators, immune function, and liver cell health of the Chinese stripe-necked turtle (Mauremys sinensis) were examined. Increasing the level of fish oil in the diet improved the growth performance of M. sinensis and increased the lipid content in the body, but it induced oxidative stress in the liver. Furthermore, it decreased the immune function of M. sinensis, increased instances of apoptosis in liver cells, and caused liver damage. These results highlight the importance of identifying the appropriate lipid supplementation level to promote growth and maintain health. Dietary lipids provide energy for animals and can also be converted into other nutrients (such as non-essential amino acids), which play a role in saving protein. The Chinese stripe-necked turtle is a protected and endangered species that has been bred in captivity; however, basic data on lipid requirements remain unavailable. In this study, 360 Mauremys sinensis (body weight of 65.32 ± 0.15 g) were randomly divided into six groups with three replicates per group; the turtles were fed experimental diets supplemented with various levels of fish oil (i.e., 1% (control group, CG), 3.5% (HF-1), 6% (HF-2), 8.5% (HF-3), 11% (HF-4), and 13.5% (HF-5)) for 10 weeks. The results showed that compared with CG, increasing the fish oil level promoted the growth performance of turtles, and the HF-3 group achieved the best effect. The HF-4 group showed the highest increases in the hepatosomatic index and viscerosomatic index. In addition, increased lipid levels also increased the crude lipid content and reduced the crude protein content in muscle tissue. Oil red O staining showed that the liver lipid content increased with the level of supplemented fish oil, which is consistent with the results of the hepatosomatic index. Compared with CG, triglyceride, total cholesterol, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol increased significantly in both the liver and serum when fish oil levels exceeded 8.5% (p < 0.05), while high-density lipoprotein cholesterol decreased significantly. Aspartate transaminase and cerealthirdtransaminase levels in serum increased significantly when fish oil levels exceeded 8.5% (p < 0.05). Moreover, the activities of antioxidant enzymes (GSH-Px, SOD, T-AOC, and CAT) and MDA showed similar results, indicating that high fish oil levels (8.5–13.5%) caused liver tissue damage in M. sinensis. Increased fish oil levels significantly upregulated the expression levels of cytokines (IFN-γ, TNF-α, TGF-β1, IL-10, and IL-12) (p < 0.05), downregulated the expression levels of antioxidant enzyme-related genes (cat, mn-sod, and gsh-px), and increased apoptosis of liver cells. Supplementation of the diet with 3.5–6% fish oil improved the growth performance of M. sinensis, and the turtles maintained a beneficial immune status. Goatfish oil (Parupeneus barberinoides) is a great of omega-3 source, which had beneficial effect in human health as consequence, these oil could be mixed with by products. Fourier trasform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy combined chemometrics techniques of pattern recognition was used for discrimination and classification of fish head, fish meat, and fish bone of goatfish. Each part of goatfish was scanned using FTIR at mid regions (4000-600 cm-1). The result showed that the partial least square - discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) could be perfectly discrimination and classification of goatfish part by using the whole FTIR spectra as a variable. The variable important in projection (VIP) analysis revealed the vibration at 1710, 721, 1744, 3011, 1116, 1377, and 1032 cm-1 were considered for their significant contribution (VIP value > 1) in discriminating of different parts of goatfish oil. It can be concluded that FTIR spectroscopy combined supervised pattern recognition could be used as a rapid analytical technique for discrimination and classification of fish oil. Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of different ω-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) enriched diets, including a novel renewable plant source of ω-3 fatty acids (Buglossoides arvensis), on the development and progression of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Methods: RA was induced in mice consuming experimental diets using the K/BxN model. The experimental diets consisted of either a western control diet (control), diets containing B. arvensis oil or fish oil. The effects of the diets on platelets, platelet microvesicles (PMVs), and inflammatory markers such as clinical index, ankle thickness and cytokine/chemokine release were measured. Results: While ω-3 PUFA-enriched diets did not prevent the development of arthritis in the K/BxN model, a significant decrease in ankle swelling was observed compared to the control group. Platelets isolated from mice consuming either low content of B. arvensis oil or fish oil diets exhibited significantly decreased PMVs production compared to mice consuming the control diet. Conclusion: Our study provides insight into the contribution of ω-3 PUFA supplementation in modulating the pro-inflammatory phenotype of platelets in RA pathology. Anxiety disorders are more prevalent in females than males, in part due to the change in ovarian hormones during the late luteal phase of the menstrual cycle. Estradiol and progesterone (EþP) peak in the luteal phase before dropping rapidly in the late luteal phase. This drop is associated with increased anxiety, and EþP may decrease anxiety. It is important to find a way to counteract the negative symptoms associated with ovarian hormone changes. Omega-3 fatty acid supplementation has been found to decrease anxiety-like behavior in male rats, but the effects on anxiety-like behavior in females are unknown. To determine the effect of omegas and EþP on anxiety-like behavior in female rats, we observed two trials of the elevated plus maze (EPM) and light-dark box after omega-3 fatty acid and EþP treatments. There was a decrease in time spent and crosses in the open arm of the EPM and the light side of the light-dark box across trials and no effect of omega-3 fatty acids or EþP. Omega-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 LC-PUFA) are essential fatty acids required in healthy balanced diets for humans. To induce sustained production of n-3 LC-PUFA in gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata), chitosan-tripolyphosphate (TPP) nanoparticles encapsulating plasmids expressing fish codon-optimised Caenorhabditis elegans FAT-1 and FAT-2 were intraperitoneally administered every 4 weeks (3 doses in total, each of 10 μg plasmid per g of body weight). Growth performance and metabolic effects of chitosan-TPP complexed with pSG5 (empty plasmid), pSG5-FAT-1, pSG5-FAT-2 and pSG5-FAT-1 + pSG5-FAT-2 were assessed 70 days post-treatment. Tissue distribution analysis showed high expression levels of fish codon-optimised FAT-1 and FAT-2 in the liver (> 200-fold). Expression of fat-1 and fat-1 + fat-2 increased weight gain. Fatty acid methyl esters assay revealed that co-expression of fat-1 and fat-2 increased liver production and muscle accumulation of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and total n-3 LC-PUFA, while decreased the n-6/n-3 ratio. Co-expression of fat-1 and fat-2 downregulated srebf1 and genes encoding rate-limiting enzymes for de novo lipogenesis in the liver, leading to decreased circulating triglycerides and cholesterol. In contrast, FAT-2 and FAT-1 + FAT-2 upregulated hepatic hnf4a, nr1h3 and key enzymes in glycolysis and the pentose phosphate pathway. Our findings demonstrate for the first time efficient and sustained production of EPA and DHA in animals after long-term treatment with chitosan-TPP-DNA nanoparticles expressing FAT-1 and FAT-2, which enabled the production of functional fish rich in n-3 LC-PUFA for human consumption. Fish waste is a major environmental pollution problem and requires costly treatment prior to disposal. Conversion of fish waste to economically important and eco-friendly products will make fishing and fish processing more valuable and sustainable. This study evaluated waste residues from fish processing waste subjected to conventional physical extraction of fish oil for single-cell oil production using oleaginous yeast. Potential application of the single-cell oil to produce biodiesel was evaluated. The treatment containing fish waste residue (5%, w/v) and glucose (20 g/L, w/v) displayed the highest rate (14%) of total lipid generation. The fish waste residue proved to be a good nitrogen source for the oleaginous yeast, Rhodotorula sp. R1. At 15% (w/v) fish waste residue and 20% (w/v) glucose amendment of the medium, the highest biomass production was observed. The yeast bio-oil has a lipid profile like vegetable oils and consists of mainly long-chain fatty acids (between C14 and C24) which are suitable for biodiesel production. The most abundant fatty acids were palmitic acid (C16:0), elaidic acid (C18:1n-9t), and stearic acid (C18:0). FTIR analysis of the transesterification reaction product using the yeast oil confirmed its conversion to biodiesel. Although glucose amendment of medium supported lipid accumulation, it can be replaced with wastes rich in sugars to decrease the cost of single-cell bio-oil production. Rhizopus oryzae lipase (ROL) is known to present high selectivity in chemical reactions. However, the poor stability of ROL effectively limits its industrial applications. In this study, several immobilization protocols, such as hydrophobic adsorption, covalent immobilization, multi‐point covalent attachment, ionic adsorption/cross‐linking, and ionic interaction, were applied to improve the stability of ROL. Heterogeneous modification of aspartic and glutamic acid residues on the surface of ROL was carried out by 1‐ethyl‐3‐(3‐dimethylaminopropyl) carbodiimide (EDC) to introduce new amine groups with lower pKb. The highest immobilization yield of 89% was achieved for octyl‐agarose, producing specific activity of 45 U/mg, which is 15 folds higher than the specific activity of the soluble enzyme. Improved stability of ROL was observed, in particular for those derivatives obtained by multi‐point covalent attachment of ROL on glyoxyl‐agarose (Gx‐ROL) and aminated ROL on glyoxyl‐agarose (Gx‐NH2‐ROL) by retaining 28%–36% of their initial activities after 24 h incubation at 60°C. Immobilization also altered the co‐solvent stability profile of the immobilized derivatives producing biocatalysts with varied co‐solvent stabilities. Furthermore, utilization of the immobilized preparations in fish oil hydrolysis revealed the selective release of cis‐5,8,11,14,17‐eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and cis‐4,7,10,13,16,19‐docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) in favor of EPA. Background: Intestinal failure-associated liver disease (IFALD) is a complication of long-term PN use, attributed to the use of ω-6 injectable lipid emulsions (ILE). Fish oil (FO) ILE have been successful in reversing liver injury in neonates. Evidence for pure FO ILE use in adult patients is limited. Methods: Case series of the use of FO lipid emulsions in adults with IFALD from the University of Chicago PN registry. Analysis of medical charts and PN formulations was performed. Results: Three cases of IFALD treated with FO ILE were identified. The first case was a 30-year-old man with short bowel syndrome (SBS), hyperbilirubinemia, and biopsy-proven IFALD. Following a change from a soy lipid emulsion to FO lipid emulsion, his liver tests rapidly improved and remained stable over 202 weeks of use. The second case was a 76-year-old woman with intestinal failure (IF) due to a frozen bowel. A change from a soy ILE to a composite lipid and later to a pure FO ILE did not result in improvement in her liver tests. The third case was a 28-year-old man with SBS and biopsy-proven IFALD. Change to a composite ILE and subsequently FO lipid emulsion resulted in a gradual improvement in liver tests. No clinical essential fatty acid (EFA) deficiencies were identified during treatment. Conclusion: FO ILE may be effective in the treatment of adult patients with cholestatic IFALD. Use is safe with no EFA deficiencies detected in up to 4 years of use. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

There is significant demand for high-purity DHA in the pharmaceutical industry. Traditionally, this high-purity DHA is extracted from raw materials with relatively low DHA content (10–20%), such as fish oil. Recently, through electroporation-induced mutation, a high-DHA-content strain of Schizochytrium sp. GCD2032 was isolated. To further enhance its DHA production, optimizations were conducted on the culture medium and fermentation conditions (in shaking flasks), as well as different nitrogen source concentrations (in a 5 L fermenter) for biomass, fatty acid content, and DHA content (as a percentage of total fatty acids). In a 5 L fermenter, Schizochytrium sp. GCD2032 achieved a biomass of 50 g/L, with fatty acid content of 55.71% and DHA content of 61.29%. Notably, the DHA content reached an impressive 341.45 mg/g of dry weight. This strain consistently produces high levels of fatty acids and DHA, demonstrating significant potential for pharmaceutical applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The encapsulation of fish oil by monoaxial electrospraying using kafirin or zein proteins as hydrophobic wall materials was investigated. Kafirin resulted in spherical fish oil-loaded nanocapsules (>50% of capsules below 1 µm), whereas zein led to fish oil-loaded nanocapsules with non-spherical morphology (>80% of capsules below 1 µm). Both hydrophobic encapsulating materials interacted with fish oil, successfully entrapping the oil within the protein matrix as indicated by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Raman spectroscopy results. FTIR also suggested hydrogen bonding between fish oil and the proteins. Trapped radicals in the encapsulation matrix that were detected by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), indicated oxidation during electrospraying and storage. Results from isothermal (140 °C) differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) denoted that the encapsulation of fish oil by electrospraying using both kafirin or zein as wall materials protected fish oil from oxidation. In particular, the zein-based nanocapsules were 3.3 times more oxidatively stable than the kafirin-based nanocapsules, which correlates with the higher oil encapsulation efficiency found for zein-based capsules. Thus, this study shows that kafirin might be considered a hydrophobic wall material for the encapsulation of fish oil by electrospraying, although it prevented lipid oxidation to a lower extent when compared to zein. As the global demand for seafood surges, the expanding aquaculture industry faces a pressing need for viable aquafeed ingredients. The raw material for fish oil is limited and expensive due to unpredictable fishery resources in the fishing zones and the overexploitation of wild fisheries, underscoring the urgency of finding alternatives. This review explores diverse plant oil sources, including soybean, rapeseed, linseed, and algal oils, emphasizing their crucial role in nutritionally balanced aquafeeds. These oils support aquatic animals' growth, health, and development, influencing membrane structure, energy storage, and hormone production. Genetically modified oilseeds (GM), such as camelina and canola, offer a controlled nutrient content, enabling customized nutrient profiles. This comprehensive review provides an overview of different plant oil sources, elucidates their nutrient profiles, and assesses their potential applications in aquaculture. The discussion encompasses their impact on growth, feed efficiency, lipid profile, health, immunological status, disease resistance, and overall performance of both freshwater and marine fish. Furthermore, the review compiles relevant data on the current status of genetically modified plant oils and explores their potential integration into aquaculture practices. [Display omitted] Poor storage stability and oxidative deterioration are the common drawbacks of edible oils rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). We hypothesized that the natural zein/tannic acid self-assembly nanoparticles (ZT NPs) could be employed as stabilizers to anchor at the oil–water interface, thus constructing Pickering emulsion gel (PKEG) system for three types of PUFA-rich oils, soybean oil (SO), fish oil (FO) and cod liver oil (CLO), to improve the storage and oxidation stability. ZT NPs were prepared by the anti-solvent coprecipitation method, and the three-phase contact angle, FT-IR, and XRD were mainly characterized. To observe the shell-core structure and oil–water interface details of SO/FO/CLO PKEGs by confocal laser scanning microscope and cryo-scanning electron microscope. Accelerated oxidation of FO was performed to assess the protective effect of PKEG on lipids. The SO, FO, and CLO PKEGs stabilized by 2 % ZT NPs, with oil fraction (φ = 0.5–0.6), were obtained. PKEGs show high viscoelasticity, clear shell-core structure spatial network structure, and ideal storage stability. Under accelerated oxidation, the degree of oxidative rancidity of FO PKEG was obviously lower than that of free FO. Overall, this work opens up new possibilities for using natural PKEG to prevent oxidative deterioration and prolong the shelf-life of PUFA-rich oils. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context: Menhaden fish oil (FO) is widely recognized for inhibiting neuroinflammatory responses and preserving brain function. Nevertheless, the mechanisms of FO influencing brain cognitive function in diabetic states remain unclear. Objective: this study examines the potential role of FO in suppressing lPs-induced neuroinflammation and cognitive impairment in diabetic animals (DA). Materials and methods: thirty male Wistar rats were divided into 5 groups: i) DA received LPS induction (DA-LPS); ii) DA received lPs induction and 1 g/kg FO (DA-LPS-1FO); iii) Da received lPs induction and 3 g/ kg FO (DA-LPS-3FO); iv) animals received normal saline and 3 g/kg FO (NS-3FO) and v) control animals received normal saline (CTRL). Y-maze test was used to measure cognitive performance, while brain samples were collected for inflammatory markers and morphological analysis. Results: Da received lPs induction, and 1 or 3 g/kg FO significantly inhibited hyperglycaemia and brain inflammation, as evidenced by lowered levels of pro-inflammatory mediators. additionally, both DA-LPS-1FO and DA-LPS-3FO groups exhibited a notable reduction in neuronal damage and glial cell migration compared to the other groups. these results were correlated with the increasing number of entries and time spent in the novel arm of the Y-maze test. Discussion and conclusion: this study indicates that supplementation of menhaden FO inhibits the lPs signaling pathway and protects against neuroinflammation, consequently maintaining cognitive performance in diabetic animals. thus, the current study suggested that fish oil may be effective as a supporting therapy option for diabetes to avoid diabetes-cognitive impairment. Palm oil, with its higher production, lower prices, and higher levels of palmitic acid and oleic acid, may have great potential for use in the aquafeed industry. In this study, with an 8‐week feeding experiment, the efficacy of palm oil as a substitute for fish oil in tiger puffer feeds was comprehensively evaluated. The control diets (FO group) contained 8% marine fish oil as the main lipid source, while in the treatment diets, the added marine fish oil was replaced with palm oil at 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%, respectively, which was named 25PO, 50PO, 75PO, and 100PO, respectively. Juvenile tiger puffers with an initial weight of 15.0 ± 0.04 g were used, with three replicate tanks of 30 juvenile fish tiger puffer for each dietary group. The fish oil replacement by palm oil did not have an adverse effect on fish growth and feeding, but the weight gain decreased by 17.3% in group PO100. Palm oil had no significant effects on fish proximate composition and muscle texture. The effects of dietary palm oil on muscle fatty acid composition were not significant, with DHA and EPA significantly lowered only in the 100PO group. In contrast, the changes in liver and intestinal fatty acid compositions in response to diets were more significant than those in the muscle. In the intestine, the replacement of more than 50% fish oil by palm oil significantly downregulated the gene expression associated with peroxisomal fatty acid β‐oxidation and triglyceride hydrolysis, while upregulated the expression of cholesterol biosynthetic genes. In the liver, the replacement of more than 75% fish oil also significantly upregulated the cholesterol synthesis. In conclusion, palm oil can replace 75% of added marine fish oil in tiger puffer diets and does not adversely affect the growth performance, feed utilization, muscle composition, and muscle texture. A 12-week growth trial was conducted to evaluate the complete coreplacement of fish meal (FM) and fish oil (FO) in juvenile Florida pompano (Trachinotus carolinus) diets. Five open-formula experimental diets were formulated as iso-nitrogenous (approximately 46% crude protein) and isolipidic (approximately 15% crude lipid). It is assumed that Florida pompano lack the mechanisms for synthesizing sufficient LC-PUFA. In the FM/FO-free diets, to meet the necessary dietary intake of LC-PUFA, a commercially available Schizochytrium algal oil was used. Four diets were prepared from a basal mix, with spirulina and poultry by-product meal as the principal protein sources. They differed only in their oil source, containing fish oil (FO), algal oil (AO), soy oil (SO), or a 50/50 blend of algal oil and soy oil (A/S). The fifth experimental diet (control) was a standard open-formula FM diet. In addition to the experimental diets, two commercial closed-formula diets served as references. The seven diets, each with four replicates, were stocked with 20 Florida pompano (approximately 4 g) in each. The experimental open-formula diets were tested against the control using Dunnett's t-test, and different oil sources were tested against each other using orthogonal contrasts. The four experimental diets were each tested against the two reference diets with equivalency tests. Feed intake and survival were not different between the experimental diets and control. However, all production metrics were lower in the SO diet than the control. No other differences were observed between the FO, AO, and A/S diets and the control, or between the three diets. The feed conversion ratio (FCR) was higher in fish fed the SO diet than in fish fed the control diet, and no other differences were found. The protein efficiency ratio (PER) was higher in fish fed the control diet than in fish fed the experimental diets. Protein productive values (PPV) were similar to PER, except that the PPV in fish fed the AO diet was not different from the control. The contrasts revealed that the FO, AO, and A/S diets resulted in a lower FCR than the SO diet. The PER was higher in fish fed the AO diet, and lower in fish fed the SO diet. The PPV was higher in fish fed the AO diet than in fish fed the A/S and SO diets, but similar to that of fish fed the FO diet. There were striking differences in performance between the two commercial reference feeds, underscoring the importance of using well-defined open-formula diets as a reference or control. To our knowledge this is the first study to demonstrate that co-replacement of FM and FO can be achieved in Florida pompano by supplying an FM- and FO-free diet. Choline is recognized as an essential nutrient for Atlantic salmon at all developmental stages. However, its dietary requirement is not well defined. Choline plays a critical role in lipid transport, and the clearest deficiency sign is intestinal steatosis. The present work, aiming to find whether lipid source and fish size may affect steatosis symptoms, was one of a series of studies conducted to identify which production-related conditions may influence choline requirement. Six choline-deficient diets were formulated varying in ratios of rapeseed oil to fish oil and fed to Atlantic salmon of 1.5 and 4.5 kg. After eight weeks, somatic characteristics were observed, and the severity of intestinal steatosis was assessed by histological, biochemical, and molecular analyses. Fatty acid composition in pyloric intestine, mesenteric tissue, and liver samples was also quantified. The increasing rapeseed oil level increased lipid digestibility markedly, enhancing lipid supply to the fish. Moreover, small fish consumed more feed, and consequently had a higher lipid intake. In conclusion, the results showed that choline requirement depends on dietary lipid load, which depends on the fatty acid profile as well as the fish size. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aquaculture production is continuously increasing, consequently increasing the demand for feed. Unfortunately, the reliance on fish meal and fish oil also raises sustainability issues due to overfishing and resource depletion. Nanoparticle-enhanced feed presents a promising solution to these challenges. Nanoparticles, with their large surface area-to-volume ratio and encapsulation capabilities, significantly improve nutrient delivery, absorption, and utilization, enhancing growth and health. Their immune-modulatory and antimicrobial properties reduce antibiotic use and support sustainability. This review explores different nanoparticles in fish feed, including metal-based, non-metal-based, and composite types, each offering benefits for fish growth and health. It highlights the advantages of nanoparticle-enhanced feed, such as improved nutrient delivery, immune enhancement, antimicrobial action, stress reduction, and environmental sustainability. Concerns like potential toxicity, safety, bioaccumulation, and environmental impacts of nanoparticles, together with measures of addressing these concerns, are also highlighted. Purpose: Maternal high-fat diet (HF) programs obesity, metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), hypertriglyceridemia, and hyperglycemia associated with increased endocannabinoid system (ECS) in the liver of adult male rat offspring. We hypothesized that maternal HF would induce sex specific ECS changes in the liver of newborn rats, prior to obesity onset, and maternal fish oil (FO) supplementation would reprogram the ECS and lipid metabolism markers preventing liver triglycerides (TG) accumulation. Methods: Female rats received a control (CT) (10.9% fat) or HF (28.7% fat) diet 8 weeks prior to mating and during pregnancy. A subgroup of HF dams received 3% FO supplementation in the HF diet (35.4% fat) during pregnancy (HFFO). Serum hormones and liver TG, ECS, lipid metabolism, oxidative stress and autophagy markers were assessed in male and female newborn offspring. Results: Maternal HF diet increased liver cannabinoid receptor 1 (CB1) in males and decreased CB2 in females, with no effect on liver TG. Maternal FO supplementation reduced liver CB1 regardless of the offspring sex, but reduced TG liver content only in females. FO reduced the liver content of the endocannabinoid anandamide in males, and the content of 2-arachidonoylglycerol in both sexes. Maternal HF increased lipogenic and decreased lipid oxidation markers, and FO induced the opposite regulation in the liver of offspring. Conclusion: Prenatal HF and FO differentially modulate liver ECS in the offspring before obesity and MASLD development. These results suggest that maternal nutrition at critical stages of development can modulate the offspring's ECS, predisposing or preventing the onset of metabolic diseases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Supplementation of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) enables dose reduction of prednisolone and ciclosporin in canine atopic dermatitis (cAD). Objective: To determine if oral administration of PUFA reduces the dose of oclacitinib in cAD. Animals: Twenty‐two client‐owned dogs with cAD receiving oclacitinib. Materials and Methods: Dogs received a fish oil product (PUFA) or paraffin oil (placebo) for 16 weeks. Owners adjusted the oclacitinib dose according to daily pruritus assessments. On Day (D)0, D56 and D112, Canine Atopic Dermatitis Extent and Severity Index, fourth iteration (CADESI‐04), pruritus Visual Analog Scale (PVAS), quality‐of‐life score (QoL), Global Assessment (GA), quality‐of‐coat (QoC) and adverse events were recorded. Results: Mean daily oclacitinib dose was significantly reduced in the PUFA group from 0.51 ± 0.20 mg/kg/24 h (D0) to 0.19 ± 0.14 mg/kg/24 h (D85–112; p < 0.00001) and not in the placebo group (D0: 0.70 ± 0.33 mg/kg/24 h; D85–112: 0.53 ± 0.35 mg/kg/24 h, p = 0.5422). CADESI‐04 did not change over time or differ between groups. PVAS was significantly lower in the PUFA group (2.8 ± 1.5) compared to placebo (4.2 ± 1.6) at D112 (p = 0.0375). QoL and QoC improved only in the PUFA group (QoL: D0: 20 ± 7, D112: 12 ± 5, p = 0.0057; QoC: D0: 0 ± 0.5, D112: 1 ± 0.5, p = 0.0410). GA on D112 was higher in the PUFA group (p = 0.008). No adverse events were observed. Conclusion: Oral supplementation of PUFA allowed dose reduction of oclacitinib and improved PVAS, QoL, QoC and GA.
