BACKGROUND: Prenatal fish intake is a key source of omega-3 (ω-3) polyunsaturated fatty acids needed for brain development, yet intake is generally low, and studies addressing associations with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and related traits are lacking. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine associations of prenatal fish intake and ω-3 supplement use with both autism diagnosis and broader autism-related traits. METHODS: Participants were drawn from 32 cohorts in the Environmental influences on Child Health Outcomes Cohort Consortium. Children were born between 1999 and 2019 and part of ongoing follow-up with data available for analysis by August 2022. Exposures included self-reported maternal fish intake and ω-3/fish oil supplement use during pregnancy. Outcome measures included parent report of clinician-diagnosed ASD and parent-reported autism-related traits measured by the Social Responsiveness Scale (SRS)-second edition (n = 3939 and v3609 for fish intake analyses, respectively; n = 4537 and n = 3925 for supplement intake analyses, respectively). RESULTS: In adjusted regression models, relative to no fish intake, fish intake during pregnancy was associated with reduced odds of autism diagnosis (odds ratio: 0.84; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.77, 0.92), and a modest reduction in raw total SRS scores (β: -1.69; 95% CI: -3.3, -0.08). Estimates were similar across categories of fish consumption from any or less than once per week to more than twice per week. For ω-3 supplement use, relative to no use, no significant associations with autism diagnosis were identified, whereas a modest relation with SRS score was suggested (β: 1.98; 95% CI: 0.33, 3.64). CONCLUSIONS: These results extend previous work by suggesting that prenatal fish intake, but not ω-3 supplement use, may be associated with lower likelihood of both autism diagnosis and related traits. Given the low-fish intake in the United States general population and the rising autism prevalence, these findings suggest the need for better public health messaging regarding guidelines on fish intake for pregnant individuals.

Southern Distinct Population Segment (sDPS) green sturgeon spawn solely in one stretch of the Sacramento River in California. Management of this spawning habitat is complicated by cold water temperature requirements for the conservation of winter-run Chinook salmon. This study assessed whether low incubation and rearing temperatures resulted in carryover effects across embryo to early juvenile life stages on scaling relationships in growth and metabolism in northern DPS green sturgeon used as a proxy for sDPS green sturgeon. Fish were incubated and reared at 11 °C and 15 °C, with a subset experiencing a reciprocal temperature transfer post-hatch, to assess recovery from cold incubation or to simulate a cold-water dam release which would chill rearing larvae. Growth and metabolic rate of embryos and larvae were measured to 118 days post hatch. Reciprocal temperature transfers revealed a greater effect of low temperature exposure during larval rearing rather than during egg incubation. While 11 °C eggs hatched at a smaller length, log-transformed length-weight relationships showed that these differences in developmental trajectory dissipated as individuals achieved juvenile morphology. However, considerable size-at-age differences persisted between rearing temperatures, with 15 °C fish requiring 60 days post-hatch to achieve 1 g in mass, whereas 11 °C fish required 120 days to achieve 1 g, resulting in fish of the same age at the completion of the experiment with a ca. 37-fold difference in weight. Consequently, our study suggests that cold rearing temperatures have far more consequential downstream effects than cold embryo incubation temperatures. Growth delays from 11 °C rearing temperatures would greatly increase the period of vulnerability to predation in larval green sturgeon. The scaling relationship between log-transformed whole-body metabolism and mass exhibited a steeper slope and thus an increased oxygen requirement with size in 11 °C reared fish, potentially indicating an energetically unsustainable situation. Understanding how cold temperatures affect green sturgeon ontogeny is necessary to refine our larval recruitment estimations for this threatened species.

OBJECTIVE: n-3 fatty acid consumption during pregnancy is recommended for optimal pregnancy outcomes and offspring health. We examined characteristics associated with self-reported fish or n-3 supplement intake. DESIGN: Pooled pregnancy cohort studies. SETTING: Cohorts participating in the Environmental influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) consortium with births from 1999 to 2020. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 10 800 pregnant women in twenty-three cohorts with food frequency data on fish consumption; 12 646 from thirty-five cohorts with information on supplement use. RESULTS: Overall, 24·6 % reported consuming fish never or less than once per month, 40·1 % less than once a week, 22·1 % 1-2 times per week and 13·2 % more than twice per week. The relative risk (RR) of ever (v. never) consuming fish was higher in participants who were older (1·14, 95 % CI 1·10, 1·18 for 35-40 v.

INTRODUCTION: Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) is an essential ancillary study used to identify clinically aggressive subsets of large B-cell lymphomas that have MYC, BCL2, or BCL6 rearrangements. Small-volume biopsies such as fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) and core needle biopsy (CNB) are increasingly used to diagnose lymphoma and obtain material for ancillary studies such as FISH. However, the performance of FISH in small biopsies has not been thoroughly evaluated or compared to surgical biopsies. METHODS: We describe the results of MYC, BCL2, and BCL6 FISH in a series of 222 biopsy specimens, including FNAB with cell blocks, CNBs, and surgical excisional or incisional biopsies from 208 unique patients aggregated from 6 academic medical centers. A subset of patients had FNAB followed by a surgical biopsy (either CNB or excisional biopsy) obtained from the same or contiguous anatomic site as part of the same clinical workup; FISH results were compared for these paired specimens. RESULTS: FISH had a low hybridization failure rate of around 1% across all specimen types. FISH identified concurrent MYC and BCL2 rearrangements in 20 of 197 (10%) specimens and concurrent MYC and BCL6 rearrangements in 3 of 182 (1.6%) specimens. The paired FNAB and surgical biopsy specimens did not show any discrepancies for MYC or BCL2 FISH; of the 17 patients with 34 paired cytology and surgical specimens, only 2 of the 49 FISH probes compared (4% of all comparisons) showed any discrepancy and both were at the BCL6 locus. One discrepancy was due to necrosis of the CNB specimen causing a false negative BCL6 FISH result when compared to the FNAB cell block that demonstrated a BCL6 rearrangement. DISCUSSION: FISH showed a similar hybridization failure rate in all biopsy types. Ultimately, MYC, BCL2, or BCL6 FISH showed 96% concordance when compared across paired cytology and surgical specimens, suggesting FNAB with cell block is equivalent to other biopsy alternatives for evaluation of DLBCL or HGBCL FISH testing.

Climate change has rapidly altered marine ecosystems and is expected to continue to push systems and species beyond historical baselines into novel conditions. Projecting responses of organisms and populations to these novel environmental conditions often requires extrapolations beyond observed conditions, challenging the predictive limits of statistical modeling capabilities. Bioenergetics modeling provides the mechanistic basis for projecting climate change effects on marine living resources in novel conditions, has a long history of development, and has been applied widely to fish and other taxa. We provide our perspective on 4 opportunities that will advance the ability of bioenergetics-based models to depict changes in the productivity and distribution of fishes and other marine organisms, leading to more robust projections of climate impacts. These are (1) improved depiction of bioenergetics processes to derive realistic individual-level response(s) to complex changes in environmental conditions, (2) innovations in scaling individual-level bioenergetics to project responses at the population and food web levels, (3) more realistic coupling between spatial dynamics and bioenergetics to better represent the local- to regional-scale differences in the effects of climate change on the spatial distributions of organisms, and (4) innovations in model validation to ensure that the next generation of bioenergetics-based models can be used with known and sufficient confidence. Our focus on specific opportunities will enable critical advancements in bioenergetics modeling and position the modeling community to make more accurate and robust projections of the effects of climate change on individuals, populations, food webs, and ecosystems.

Red Melon (RM) and Red Cover (RC) discus (Symphysodon spp.) are ornamental fish varieties that were selectively bred from the wild parental lineages of the brown discus S. aquafaciatus over many generations, resulting in distinct cutaneous patterns from juveniles to adults. To better understand the underlying mechanisms, skin samples were collected from juveniles aged 60 days and adults aged 1 year from RM and RC for investigations. Microscopic observation detected xanthophores and erythrophores in all samples, except RC juveniles with no erythrophores. Melanophores were presented only in RC. The comparative analysis revealed that genes involved in pteridine synthesis (gch1 and zgc:153031), one‐carbon metabolism (aldh1l2 and zgc153031), and lipid metabolism (apoda and klf1) were differentially expressed in RM juveniles, which may be associated with the development of erythrophores and xanthophores. The temporal inhibition of melanophore differentiation and development was observed in RM juveniles, coupled with elevated expression of notum2 and sost, two antagonist genes in Wnt‐signaling, suggesting their roles in melanophore development. Distinct pigment pattern between RM and RC since the juvenile stage may be driven by the differential expression of multiple axial developmental genes, including GATA, ankyrin, and mitotic spindle orientation proteins. This is the first report to describe the differential growth of cutaneous pigments and the molecular processes involved in red discus. The ecological impact of dreissenid mussel (e.g., quagga and zebra) populations and their empty shells on native fauna in large rivers and lakes has been extensively studied. However, there is limited information on their effects in small wadable streams. Although established mussel populations in these systems are uncommon, their shells are found in high densities in benthic environments and may adversely impact stream communities. Shell densities were quantified using quadrats in two wadable streams to assess impacts on native benthic macroinvertebrates and fish. Eight reaches of each river were sampled, four with dreissenids and four without, totaling 16 locations. Macroinvertebrate and fish communities were characterized using diversity and environmental tolerance indices. Shell densities were significantly higher in dreissenid-invaded sites compared to sites with only native bivalves in both rivers. Dense shell beds had degraded biological conditions with fewer sensitive macroinvertebrates, but bed density did not affect overall macroinvertebrate or fish diversity. These findings differ from lake and large river studies, which found a greater impact of dreissenid shell deposition on macroinvertebrate and fish diversity than we observed in small wadable streams. The 'happy fish' dialogue is one of the best-known and heatedly debated passages of the Zhuangzi. Scholars have constructed different interpretations of the dialogue. Some argue that this dialogue expresses the idea of living at ease and enjoying life as it is; some refer to the idea of anti-anthropocentrism, while others reconstruct the dialogue as certain epistemological debates. This paper examines the connotations of 'fish', 'water', and 'river' in early Chinese political discourses and reads the political connotations in the dialogue between Zhuangzi and Huizi. The impacts of environmental change on Lake Biwa have been explored for decades, with water monitoring and palaeolimnological studies revealing how environmental forcing, including climate warming, eutrophication, water level manipulation and human manipulation of fish populations, has influenced the food web of Lake Biwa. However, these studies have rarely accounted for microbial food‐web components. This knowledge gap is mostly due to the lack of time series spanning more than a couple of decades, coupled with the high taxonomical expertise required to identify organisms belonging to very diverse groups.The use of a sedimentary DNA approach allows for the reconstruction of past changes in the diversity, composition and structure of the microbial eukaryotic community of aquatic systems. The application of 18S metabarcoding has been proven successful to describe the response of unicellular eukaryotes (protists) and aquatic fungi in lake ecosystems, encompassing a large taxonomic and functional diversity such as phototrophs, heterotrophs and mixotrophs.We applied 18S metabarcoding to 31 sediment core samples from Lake Biwa, spanning the past 100 years and explored the response of microbial eukaryotic communities to changes in multiple environmental stressors, including nutrient levels, lake water level, climate, as well as fish and zooplankton biomass for the period 1973–2010.We found that the manipulation of the water level and changes in fish community composition were the primary factors impacting (indirectly) the structure of the lake microbial eukaryotic community with minor, but significant, effects of climate warming and phosphorus levels. Co‐occurrence network analysis highlighted the potential food web impacts on the microbial eukaryotic community, suggesting that organisms from this compartment were impacted by both bottom‐up and top‐down processes. The mechanism by which an organism can adapt to subtle environmental changes is predicated on modifications to biochemical processes within the cellular metabolism in response to such changes. Changes in these processes have the potential to induce alterations in cellular structures and tissue organization, as well as establish a causal link between fluctuations in these parameters and stressors exposure. This investigation's main goal and innovation is to evaluate the environmental stress indicators in the aquatic ecosystem of Lake Qarun. Pesticide residues in freshwater fish should be the primary focus of evaluation of environmental stressor concentrations, since they serve as bioindicators at different times and places on a spatiotemporal scale. A thorough analysis of suggestive biochemical biomarker reactions should also be conducted. The effects of environmental stressors, specifically pesticide contamination in Qarun Lake, have been observed and investigated in relation to two fish species: Solea aejabtiaca and Oreochronis niloticus. The results of a hazard assessment conducted at six sampling sites using spatio-temporal data revealed elevated mean values for the pesticides, persistent organic pollutants (POPs), organochlorines, organophosphates, and pyrethroids that were detected. A multi biomarker approach facilitates a more comprehensive understanding of stress responses induced by exposure to pollutants. As a result, the activities of the biochemical biomarkers CYP-450, GST, GSH, and LDH in the blood and liver of fish samples were found to be notably elevated. The suitability of the identified variables for biomonitoring of aquatic pollution was validated, and the data unveiled variations in sensitivity among species, implying that Nile tilapia could potentially function as a bioindicator with high sensitivity. The findings were correlated with the concentrations of detrimental organochlorines, organophosphorus, and pyrethroids in the muscles and gills. The data indicates that pollutants linked to agricultural wastes, runoff, and municipal effluent may be discharged into the lake ecosystem. Consequently, to safeguard the environment, it is essential to enforce and implement policies, acts, and regulations that already exist. Assessing the effects of additional environmental stressors on aquatic ecosystems is another way in which biomarker screening with an integrative approach improves our comprehension of how toxicants impact various levels of biological organization and is particularly useful in realistic environmental exposure scenarios. COVID‐19 pandemic is considered a global crisis that adversely impacted the world economy. The virus possessed a serious threat to different sectors including agricultural, livestock, poultry and fish sectors in both developing and developed countries. COVID‐19 pandemic and the associated lockdown for a long period have not only caused enormous distress to the millions of poor and marginal farmers for saving their crops and/or livestock but also affected livestock, poultry production systems and associated value chains, nutrition, health care and labour availability. In addition, COVID‐19 pandemic significantly impacted the fishery sector through disruption in fish supply and value chains and had noteworthy effects on income of fish stakeholders, especially in developing countries. Saccular otoliths are hearing and balance structures in teleost fish and usually consist of the aragonite form of calcium carbonate but may contain varying amounts of the vaterite polymorph in abnormal cases. Environmental impacts, nutritional problems, pollution, stress, and changes in water parameters, or a combination of these factors, may cause deformities in saccular otoliths. In this study, we examined the morphologies and calcium carbonate polymorphs within abnormal and normal saccular otoliths in the anchovies Engraulis australis, retrieved from regurgitated stomach contents of the Australasian gannet Morus serrator, Hauraki Gulf, New Zealand. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Raman microscopy revealed several prominences in numerous areas on the surfaces of abnormal otoliths. This is the first study to report on the morphology and compositional differences in abnormal otoliths retrieved from the food of a piscivorous bird in New Zealand. Abnormalities in the structure and composition of otoliths may impact balance and hearing functions in fish and have implications on their fitness. One of the most farmed fishes is the African catfish, Clarias gariepinus. Its production has increased by 20% annually on average during the last 20 years, but the occurrence of fish diseases, especially bacterial such as Aeromonas hydrophila infections, is hindering its activities. Also, the incorporation of plant‐derived substances in aquafeeds is limited since they frequently contain different antinutritional factors, like nonstarch polysaccharides (NSPs). However, supplementing fish diets with β‐mannanase could increase growth, antioxidants, and immunity. Despite the advantage of β‐mannanase, its effects on growth, digestive enzymes, antioxidants, and immunity in African catfish need to be elucidated. This study examined the effects of dietary β‐mannanase on the growth performance, liver enzymes, antioxidant profiles, immunity, and protection of African catfish, C. gariepinus, against A. hydrophila infection. Five isonitrogenous diets were prepared to have 400 g/kg crude protein and supplemented with β‐mannanase at 0, 1500, 3000, 4500, or 6000 thermostable endo, 1,4‐β‐mannanase units (TMUs)/kg diet and fed to 300 juveniles of the African catfish, C. gariepinus (mean weight 12.1 ± 0.1 g) for 12 weeks. Then, 10 fish from each tank received an intraperitoneal injection of 0.1 mL of A. hydrophila (5.0 × 105 CFU/mL) and observed for 14 days. Results showed dietary β‐mannanase levels considerably improved growth performance but did not affect fish survival. Also, amylase, protease, and lipase levels were significantly promoted in the fish fed with β‐mannanase‐fortified diets than the control group (p < 0.05). Enhanced gut villi and intestinal absorption areas, haematlogical profiles, and liver enzymes but reduced gut viscosity were observed in fish‐fed β‐mannanase‐fortified diets (p < 0.05). In a dose‐dependent order, including β‐mannanase in the meals of African catfish raised the levels of glutathione (GSH), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione‐S‐transferase (GST), and glutamate cysteine ligase (GCL) activities and decreased the malondialdehyde (MDA) values in African catfish (p < 0.05). Also, fish immunity was greatly (p < 0.05) enhanced due to supplementation of the diet with β‐mannanase. In addition, fish‐fed diets comprising 6000 TMU β‐mannanase/kg diet showed the lowest rates of fish mortality (7.5%) (p < 0.05). Therefore, feeding African catfish, Clarias gariepinus, β‐mannanase enhanced growth performance, increased activity of digestive enzymes, gut morphology, enhanced generation of short‐chain fatty acids, digesta potential of hydrogen (pH), and improved antioxidant profiles and immunity at the optimum dose of 5800 TMU/kg diet. This study thoroughly examines biodiversity and aquatic ecosystems across 14 sampled sites within the Shitou River basin by utilizing environmental DNA technology. Through integrated analysis and high‐throughput sequencing, the study elucidates a diverse array of biodiversity, encompassing 27 fish species and 341 freshwater benthic macroinvertebrates (FBM) species. Using various biodiversity indices, we found significant differences in diversity and stability across different environments. Regions with more complex habitats had higher species richness and evenness. Further analyses showed complex relationships between diversity metrics for FBM and fish, indicating potential interactions between these groups. The standardized mean score (SMS) was developed to aid in the assessment of water quality. Specifically, SMS scoring revealed that sites STH3, STH4, and STH14 excelled across multiple dimensions, earning an “Excellent” rating, while site STH12 was rated as “Poor” due to subpar performance across several metrics. This project not only enhances current understanding regarding aquatic ecological dynamics but also establishes a strong foundation for detailed environmental evaluation and monitoring, aligned with the priorities of contemporary ecological management and caution. In aquaculture, interest in natural essential oils is increasing alongside synthetic anesthetic agents. In this context, the anesthetic efficacy of nutmeg essential oil, which had not been previously tested, was investigated in common carp (Cyprinus carpio). The study, conducted using three different concentrations (800 µL/L "LC", 1,200 µL/L "MC", and 1,400 µL/L "HC"), found that induction times were <3min for MC and HC, while LC had a longer induction time, exceeding acceptable levels. Within the first 4 h, white blood cells, red blood cells, hemoglobin, and hematocrit levels increased to >5 103/µL, >1 106/µL, >6 g/dL, and >12%, respectively. However, they returned to control levels after 8 h. Histological signs were more severe with higher concentrations, and necrosis was only observed in the HC group. Alkaline comet assay results showed DNA migration only in the HC group. According to the PROMETHEE multi-criteria decision-making model, the LC concentration is suitable for sedation, while the MC concentration should be used for deep anesthesia. The current study demonstrates that nutmeg essential oil can be used as an alternative to commercial synthetic anesthetic agents. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Previous research has demonstrated the value of the spirlin (Alburnoides bipunctatus), a small freshwater fish, as an indicator species for monitoring the ecological health of European rivers. In this study, we examine the temporal occurrence of spirlin in a lowland section of the River Drzewiczka, Poland, at the centre of the European distribution of the species. Using a mixed modelling approach, we show a significant interaction of freshwater fish species richness and time period on the probability of occurrence of spirlin across multiple microhabitats, with a strong positive relationship between the probability of occurrence and species richness at the end of the 20th Century, but an erosion in this relationship two decades later. This change in the predicted relationship of spirlin occurrence with freshwater fish species richness corresponds with a temporal decline in the water level of the River Drzewiczka. Seasonal variation in microplastics abundance, occurrence, and distribution in pelagic and demersal fishes was observed in this study during December 2021 to November 2022. One hundred percent presence of microplastic in inedible (gut and gills) tissue, while 82% and 54% in edible tissue (muscle) of pelagic and demersal fishes respectively were seen. Post-monsoon period showed high prevalence of microplastics followed by monsoon and the least during pre-monsoon in both pelagic and demersal fishes. In pelagic fishes, the edible tissue had microplastics abundance of 1.56 to 13.34 numbers per 10 g of tissue whereas inedible tissue had 3.36 to 16.67 numbers per 10 g of tissue. In demersal fishes, the edible tissue had microplastics abundance of 1.04 to 5.26 numbers per 10 g of tissue while it was 2.67 to 8.34 numbers per 10 g of inedible tissue. There was significant variation in abundance of microplastic in edible and inedible tissue of all the fishes (Mann–Whitney test, p < 0.05). The most dominant microplastics size was 0.005–0.05 mm followed by 0.05–0.5 mm and the least of greater than 0.5 mm in pelagic and demersal fishes respectively. Taking microplastic shape into consideration, the most dominant was fiber followed by fragment and the film in inedible tissue of all the fishes. The edible tissue of all the fishes had only fiber in them (100% occurrence). The dominance of blue color microplastics was observed followed by red, green, yellow, and orange at least in edible as well as inedible tissues of the fishes. More than 99% microplastics polymer observed in this study include polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and polystyrene (PS); only less than 1% was unidentified. This is the first study done on seasonal variation of microplastic in the marine fish population of Gujarat waters, Northeast Arabian Sea. Parabens are the most prevalent ingredients in cosmetics and personal care products (PCPs). They are colorless and tasteless and exhibit good stability when combined with other components. Because of these unique physicochemical properties, they are extensively used as antimicrobial and antifungal agents. Their release into the aquatic ecosystem poses potential threats to aquatic organisms, including fish. We conducted an electronic search in PubMed (http://www.ncbi. nlm.nih.gov/pubmed) using the search term parabens and fish and sorted 93 articles consisting of methyl paraben (MTP), ethyl paraben (ETP), propyl paraben (PPP), butyl paraben (BTP), and benzyl paraben (BNP) in several fish species. Furthermore, we confined our search to six fish species (common carp, Cyprinus carpio; fathead minnows, Pimephales promelas; Japanese medaka, Oryzias latipes; rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss; Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus; and zebrafish, Danio rerio) and four common parabens (MTP, ETP, PPP, and BTP) and sorted 48 articles for review. Our search indicates that among all six fish, zebrafish was the most studied fish and the MTP was the most tested paraben in fish. Moreover, depending on the alkyl chain length and linearity, long-chained parabens were more toxic than the parabens with short chains. Parabens can be considered endocrine disruptors (EDs), targeting estrogen-androgen-thyroid-steroidogenesis (EATS) pathways, blocking the development and growth of gametes, and causing intergenerational toxicity to impact the viability of offspring/larvae. Paraben exposure can also induce behavioral changes and nervous system disorders in fish. Although the USEPA and EU limit the use of parabens in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals, their prolonged persistence in the environment may pose an additional health risk to humans. This study was designed to assess the role of nano-zinc oxide in mitigating the deleterious effects of heat stress in African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) by evaluating parameters such as aggressive behavior (biting frequency and chasing duration), hematological indicators, and stress-related biochemical markers. A total of 96 catfish were divided into four distinct groups (24 fish/group): The first group (CON) served as the control group, receiving a diet free of nano-zinc oxide. The second group (HS) was exposed to heat stress at 35 °C ± 1 °C. The third group (ZN) was fed a diet containing nano-zinc oxide at 30 mg/kg of the diet, and the fourth group (ZHN) was exposed to heat stress (35 °C ± 1 °C) and fed a diet containing nano-zinc oxide at 30 mg/kg of the diet. The results clarified that the aggressive behavior and cortisol levels were significantly higher (P < 0.05) in the HS group compared to the CON and ZHN groups. Additionally, the level of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) was significantly lower (P < 0.05) in the HS group compared to the CON and ZHN groups. Meanwhile, a significant (P < 0.05) decrease in red blood cells, hemoglobin, packed cell volume, white blood cells, alkaline phosphatase, and lymphocytes, was observed in fish belonging to the HS group, while the levels of alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, neutrophils, and monocytes showed a significant increase (P < 0.05). Supplementation with nano-zinc oxide significantly recovered most hematological and biochemical parameters. In conclusion, nano-zinc oxide contributed significantly to the regulation of the negative impacts of heat stress on fish by reducing aggressive behavior and cortisol levels. The safety of sea bass is critical for the global food trade. This study evaluated the effectiveness of atmospheric cold plasma in reducing food safety risks posed by Salmonella Enteritidis and Listeria monocytogenes, which can contaminate sea bass post harvest. Cold plasma was applied to inoculated sea bass for 2 to 18 min, achieving a maximum reduction of 1.43 log CFU/g for S. Enteritidis and 0.80 log CFU/g for L. monocytogenes at 18 min. Longer treatments resulted in greater reductions; however, odor and taste quality declined to a below average quality in samples treated for 12 min or longer. Plasma treatment did not significantly alter the color, texture, or water activity (aw) of the fish. Higher levels of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARSs) were observed with increased exposure times. Cold plasma was also tested in vitro on S. Enteritidis and L. monocytogenes on agar surfaces. A 4 min treatment eliminated the initial loads of S. Enteritidis (2.71 log CFU) and L. monocytogenes (2.98 log CFU). The findings highlight the potential of cold plasma in enhancing the safety of naturally contaminated fish. The bioaccumulation of trace elements and heavy metals in aquatic organisms is a critical environmental concern due to its potential impact on ecosystem health and human safety. This study investigated the level of trace elements and heavy metals bioaccumulation in Labeo rohita and Mystus seenghala from the River Jhelum in the district Khushab, Punjab, Pakistan. The concentration of calcium, magnesium, iron, nickel, copper, arsenic, cadmium, zinc, chromium, manganese, cobalt, and lead in the gills, liver, and muscle tissues of these fish was measured using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. Then, the extent of contamination and its possible health risks were assayed. Our findings indicate significant variations in the elemental and metal concentrations among different organs and between species, reflecting their diverse feeding habits and habitats. The health risk assessment based on the estimated daily intake, estimated weekly intake, maximum permissible intake, target hazard quotient, hazard index or total target hazard quotient, health risk index, and target cancer risk revealed potential risks to human consumers of these fish. This study emphasizes the need for continuous monitoring, as new data and insights are crucial for understanding and mitigating these risks. Steroid hormones, recognized as emerging environmental contaminants, have garnered increasing attention in recent years. The present work studied the distribution characteristics in the environment, bioaccumulation in aquatic products, and the associated environmental and health risks of typical steroid hormones from commercial freshwater aquaculture farms operating under different aquaculture modes (monoculture and polyculture). Totals of 9 and 14 steroid hormones were detected in water and sediment samples, with concentrations ranging from 0.66 ± 0.17 ng/L to 40.5 ± 5.08 ng/L and from 0.36 ± 0.08 ng/g to 123 ± 19.9 ng/g, respectively. Hazard index (HI) calculations indicated that all sampling locations were identified as medium or high risk for both water and sediment matrices. Nineteen steroids were detected in at least one type of tissue, with the concentrations in the bile, plasma, muscle, liver, and gill ranging from 5000 L/kg). Notably, despite low estimated daily intakes (EDIs) (0.43–6.43 ng/day/person to 18.7 ng/day/person) and hazard quotients (HQs) (below 4.188 × 10−7), the high bioaccumulation factors (BAFs) underscore the necessity for stringent regulatory measures by local governments. Additionally, a comparison of EDI results across different aquaculture modes and fish species revealed that steroid hormone-related health risks to humans are influenced by both the fish species and the aquaculture mode. This study indicated that the consumption of poly-cultured fish (e.g., bighead carp) may pose a greater steroid-related health risk, compared to the consumption of mono-cultured fish. Based on our karyological findings in the Anacamptis Rich., Ophrys L., and Serapias L. genera, we have identified chromosomal markers within some hybrids and elucidated their interrelationships. Mitotic chromosomes of fifteen taxa were analyzed using the conventional Feulgen staining method. Only for Anacamptis ×gennarii (Rchb. f.) H.Kretzschmar, Eccarius & Dietr. [A. morio (L.) R.M.Bateman, Pridgeon & M.W.Chase × A. papilionacea (L.) R.M.Bateman, Pridgeon & M.W.Chase] and its parental species were some data obtained and reported with the banding method with Giemsa, Hoechst 33258 fluorochrome, and the FISH techniques. Our research involved new chromosomal measurements of fifteen taxa, including six hybrids, along with schematic representations. Morphometric parameters, i.e., MCA and CVCL, were used to evaluate karyotype asymmetry. Of meaning were the analyses performed on chromosomal complements of selected hybrids, which distinctly revealed marker chromosomes present in one or both putative parental species. Among the parents identified in some hybrids, Ophrys tenthredinifera Willd. has shown some interest due to the presence in its karyotype of a pair of chromosomes (n.1) showing a notable secondary constriction on the long arm. Indeed, one of the homologs is clearly distinguishable in the analyzed hybrids, where it clearly emerges as one of the putative parents. Given the challenges in detecting certain karyomorphological features within the Orchidinae subtribe using alternative methods, such as Giemsa C-banding or fluorescence banding, the Feulgen method remains valuable for cytogenetic characterization. The back-reef depressions, or lagoons, of Reunion Island (western Indian Ocean) host a high abundance of organisms living amongst the coral reefs and are critical sites for artisanal fishing, tourism, and shoreline stability for the island. Over time, increasing degradation of Reunionese reefs has been observed due to overexploitation, beach erosion and eutrophication. Efforts to mitigate the impact of these pressures on aquatic organisms include biodiversity surveys primarily performed through visual censuses that can be logistically complex and may unintentionally overlook organisms. Surveys integrating environmental DNA (eDNA) collections have provided rapid biodiversity assessments, while helping to circumvent some limitations of visual surveys. The present study describes the results of an exploratory eDNA survey, which aims to characterize metazoan communities of four Reunionese lagoons located along the west coast of the island. As eDNA surveys first require deliberate study design and optimization for each new context, we sought to establish a modernized workflow implementing specialized equipment to collect and preserve samples to facilitate future studies in these lagoons. During the austral summer of 2023, samples were pumped directly from surface and bottom depths at each site through self-preserving filters which were then processed for DNA metabarcoding using regions of the 12S ribosomal RNA (12S), small ribosomal subunit 18S (18S) and Cytochrome Oxidase I (COI) genes. The survey detected high species richness that varied by site, and in a single collection period, recovered the presence of 60 teleost families and numerous invertebrate taxa, including members of the coral faunal community that are less studied in Reunion. Distinct biological communities were observed at each site, and within a single lagoon, suggesting that these differences are due to site-specific factors (e.g., environmental variables, geographic distance, etc.). Although continued protocol optimization is needed, the present findings demonstrate the successful application of an eDNA-based survey for biodiversity assessment within Reunionese lagoons. Fish are considered objective indicators of environmental health and ecosystem stability. Establishing regional reference databases of mitochondrial genome sequences from local fish communities can significantly enhance fish monitoring using environmental DNA (eDNA) analysis. For non-native species, the eDNA technique provides early detection and rapid monitoring. It is also crucial to include fundamental genetic information for both native and non-native species in genetic databases. This study presents the complete mitochondrial genomes of 17 fish species inhabiting the Baiyangdian Basin, a national key wetland in China. The mitochondrial DNA of these fish was analyzed to investigate their characteristics, and their phylogeny was determined using maximum likelihood (ML) methods. Various analyses were performed, including the examination of nucleotide composition, evaluation of AT-skew and GC-skew, analysis of codon frequency, and determination of relative synonymous codon usage (RSCU) values, and assessment of selection pressure on protein-coding genes (PCGs). The analysis showed that all PCGs in all fish underwent purifying selection. Using Xenocyprididae as a representative, this study investigated the genetic selection tendencies of native and non-native fish species in the Baiyangdian Basin. Significant differences were found in five of the 13 PCGs: COI, COII, COIII, Cytb, and ATP8. Except for ATP8, the findings indicated that the genes of nonnative species underwent stronger purifying selection during evolution compared to native species. Additionally, comparing the population ω values of non-native species to those of native species showed that the Cytb and COIII genes exhibited greater differential purification selection than COI and COII. These differences may be the result of the evolution of non-native species to migrate and adapt to the Baiyangdian Basin, thereby affecting the evolution of related genes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Population dynamics depend on trophic interactions that are affected by climate change. The rise in sea temperature is associated with the disappearance of sea ice in the Arctic. In the Arctic part of the Barents Sea, Atlantic cod, capelin and polar cod are three fish populations that interact and are confronted with climate-induced sea ice reductions. The first is a major predator in the system, while the last two are key species in Arctic and sub-Arctic ecosystems, respectively. There are still many unknowns regarding how predicted environmental change may influence the joint dynamics of these populations. Using time series from a 32 year long survey, we developed a state-space model that jointly modelled the dynamics of cod, capelin and polar cod. Using a hindcast scenario approach, we projected the effect of reduced sea ice on these populations. We show that the impact of sea ice reduction and concomitant sea temperature increase may lead to a decrease of polar cod abundance at the benefit of capelin but not of cod which may decrease, resulting in strong changes in the food web. Our analyses show that climate change in the Arcto-boreal system can generate different species assemblages and new trophic interactions, which is the knowledge needed for effective management measures. Astroblepus species, commonly known as Andean climbing catfish, exhibit a unique challenge in species delimitation, leading to ongoing taxonomic debates. Here we report data on Astroblepus mindoensis, a vulnerable species endemic to Ecuador, obtained by an integrative approach that includes cytogenetic analysis, molecular identification of the specimens, and recording of morphological and morphometric characters useful for species diagnosis. Thus, this study aimed to associate the karyotype data of the specimens analyzed with morphological and molecular characters, improving and expanding the existing taxonomic information, thus contributing to the systematics of the species. Our morphology results, unlike Regan's original description, which is brief and ambiguous, provide a more detailed morphometric and meristic description. Molecular phylogenetic reconstruction and genetic distance based on a fragment of the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) showed that our samples constitute a well‐supported and monophyletic clade within the A. grixalvii species complex. The cytogenetic analysis identified distinct chromosomal markers, including a single cluster of major ribosomal genes (on chromosome pair 3) and of minor ribosomal genes (on chromosome pair 12) with their localization differing from those reported in other Astroblepus species analyzed. Additionally, the presence of a heteromorphic chromosome pair in males suggests the presence of an XX/XY sex‐determination system that has not been identified in other congeneric species. Further investigation is necessary to determine if these chromosomes are associated with the accumulation of repeated sequences, as typically occurs with sex chromosomes, and to assess their presence in other species of the genus. \nKey policy highlightsThe beach seine fishery at Oruwella, Tangalle, Sri Lanka (6°1'51“N; 80°ˊ47'57”E) was studied for its discarded bycatch over 34 months. Fishes of the benthic family-Cynoglossidae were most frequent (40.5 %) for the whole study period while jellyfish (Aurelia sp) showed the highest catch frequency (77.2 %) during the southwest monsoon. The species composition of the bycatch (per haul) was higher during the northeast monsoon than the other two periods. Thus, monsoonal and incidental jellyfish (Aurelia sp) blooms had significant impacts on the abundance and species composition of the bycatch. The study reported 26 bycatch species where 65 % and 73% of the bycatch organism types were benthic and non-commercial species respectively. As 72.6 % of hauls had less than 20 bycatch individuals, the total bycatch abundance (per haul) was comparatively low. The study also revealed the lowest number of discarding bycatch species among other studies. Cod-end made with relatively large (>0.5cm) mesh and traditional knowledge of fishers to forecast specific commercial fish schools contributed to lowering the abundance and the bycatch species in this fishery. The use of antimicrobials is essential for the aquaculture sector; however, their misuse is cause for concern because it could adversely affect the environment and human health. Irresponsible use of antimicrobials can lead to antimicrobial resistance and result in the presence of unwanted residues in aquaculture products. The establishment of maximum residue limits (MRLs) for antimicrobials is of great importance for monitoring their correct use, but the lack of harmonized standards as well as the regulatory gaps for the aquatic products create a challenging situation, as it is reflected in import notifications related to food safety. This paper collects information about current MRLs for antimicrobials in aquatic commodities in the main importing and exporting countries of aquatic products and compares them with each other and with MRLs set by Codex Alimentarius. This analysis highlighted the need for Codex Alimentarius guidance regarding MRLs for nine antimicrobials in aquaculture products (chlortetracycline, doxycycline, enrofloxacin, erythromycin, florfenicol, sulfadimethoxine + ormetoprim, sulfamerazine, tetracycline, and trimethoprim). This paper shows that there is still work to do to implement exhaustive science‐based international standards for residues permitted in aquatic commodities and promote harmonization. Recent decades have witnessed substantial changes in freshwater biodiversity worldwide. Although research has shown that freshwater biodiversity can be shaped by changes in habitat diversity and human‐induced pressure, the potentials for interaction between these drivers and freshwater biodiversity at large spatial extents remain unclear. To address these issues, we employed a spatially extensive multitrophic fish and insect database from 3323 stream sites across the United States, to investigate the ability of habitat diversity to modulate the effect of human pressure on the richness and abundance of fish and insects. We found evidence that high levels of habitat diversity were associated with increased richness and abundance of fish and insects (including whole‐assemblage and individual trophic guilds). We also show that the effects of human pressure on the richness and abundance of fish and insects tend to become positive at high levels of habitat diversity. Where habitat diversity is low, human pressure strongly reduces insect richness and abundance, whereas these reductions are attenuated at high levels of habitat diversity. Structural equation modeling revealed that human pressure reduced habitat diversity, indirectly negatively affecting the richness and abundance of fish and insects. These findings illustrate that, in addition to promoting greater fish and insect biodiversity, habitat diversity may mitigate the deleterious effects of human pressures on these two stream assemblages. Overall, our study suggests that maintaining high levels of habitat diversity is a useful way to protect freshwater biodiversity from ongoing increases in human pressure. Environmental DNA (eDNA) has emerged as a highly sensitive and efficient tool for the biomonitoring of aquatic ecosystems. In this study, we investigated fish and benthic species communities using eDNA techniques in a medium-sized reservoir (about 3 square kilometers) in Anhui, China. A total of 12 water samples and 11 sediment samples were analyzed by 12S and 18S primers, respectively. We analyzed the composition of species diversity and the effect of seven environmental factors using the Mantel test. A total of 42 fish taxa were present in the water samples, and 188 benthic taxa in the sediment samples. Species composition was different in disparate stations. We found that water temperature and salinity are pivotal factors influencing the composition of fish communities, while chlorophyll-a is a primary environmental determinant for benthic species assembly structures across different zones. Biodiversity information generated by eDNA techniques can be used to reflect the resource status of this reservoir. A key ambition in care studies has been to study care in practice and as practice. By turning towards practices, care studies has rendered visible and acknowledged important work that is not captured through looking at formal procedures or official and written materials, such as policy documents and medical protocols. In this literature, document materials and the written have often been seen as unable to demonstrate and address the 'specificities of care' (Mol et al., 2010, p. 9). We challenge this view by showing how pragmatically-oriented approaches can be extended to the procedural and formalized aspects of care practices. We draw upon fieldwork in the life sciences—comparative immunology—investigated through experiments on Atlantic cod (Gadus Morhua). How to care for fish is a contested domain; many uncertainties exist around how to care for fish so that legal requirements are met. We ask: How are existing legal and ethical principles and procedures put to work in cod immunology and animal research? By what document-practices and document-tools is care for cod in research negotiated and settled? How does the cod stand out as an object of care in the life sciences? Our article answers these questions by empirically teasing out how scientists navigate the terrain and arguing for the importance of bringing the document-based realities of animal research into analysis. Background: Parvalbumin Gad c1 is a major cod allergen used as a follow‐up marker of fish‐allergic children. However, the diagnostic efficacy of recombinant Gad c 1 (rGad c 1) for fish allergy diagnosis remains controversial. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of rGad c1 for diagnosing cod and horse mackerel allergy. Methods: This single‐centered, retrospective study obtained oral food challenges (OFCs) information performed for cod and horse mackerel. Cod‐, horse mackerel‐, and rGad c1‐specific immunoglobulins (sIgEs) were investigated. Diagnostic performances of these parameters were compared using areas under the curve (AUC). Results: We enrolled 45 and 38 children with suspected cod and horse mackerel allergies, respectively. The median age (interquartile range) of children with suspected cod allergy was 5.7 (0.7–11.7) years and that of children with suspected horse mackerel allergy was 6.0 (1.0–12.3) years. Fourteen and 22 children reacted to OFCs with 25 (10–40) g of cooked pacific cod and 40 (10–40) g of cooked horse mackerel, respectively. The cod sIgE and rGad c 1 sIgE AUCs for cod allergy diagnosis were 0.85 and 0.90, respectively. For horse mackerel allergy diagnosis, AUCs of horse mackerel and rGad c 1 sIgE were 0.76 and 0.72, respectively. Both AUCs for cod and mackerel allergy were significantly different. Conclusion: rGad c 1 sIgE is more effective than cod sIgE as a diagnostic marker of cod allergy, but less effective than horse mackerel sIgE as a diagnostic marker of horse mackerel allergy. Simple Summary: This study investigated the response of goldfish (Carassius auratus) to different management conditions by assessing their oxygen consumption using an intermittent respirometry system, which serves as an indicator of metabolic rate. Goldfish consumed more oxygen during the day than at night, agreeing with the diurnal pattern of this teleost. Feeding to satiety increased their oxygen consumption by 35%, peaking 3 h after eating and returning to the normal routine values after 7 h. Handling the fish for five minutes caused a 140% increase in oxygen use, which returned to normal after 2.5 h. Increasing the water temperature gradually to 30 °C resulted in a 200% increase in oxygen consumption 2.5 h after the start of the temperature increase. Common aquaculture anesthetics also affected oxygen use for at least 4 h post-recovery. These findings suggest that metabolic rate is a valuable indicator of how goldfish respond to different practices that might increase their energy expenditure and stress. Therefore, intermittent respirometry, which measures oxygen consumption over time, is recommended to help understand and improve fish welfare in aquaculture. This study examined the metabolic rate (MO2, oxygen consumption) of goldfish (Carassius auratus) under normal management conditions in aquaculture. Using an intermittent respirometry system, we assessed daily variations and the effects of feeding, handling, temperature increase, and anesthetics. MO2 exhibited a daily rhythm, with higher values during day. Feeding to satiety produced a 35% increase in MO2 compared to fasted animals, with a maximum peak after 3 h and returning to baseline after 7 h. Handling stress (5 min) produced a 140% MO2 peak (from 180 to 252 mg O2 kg−1 h−1), returning to the routine MO2 after 2.5 h. An increase in water temperature (+0.1 °C min−1) up to 30 °C caused MO2 to peak at 200% after 2.5 h from the start of the temperature increase. The use of common anesthetics in aquaculture (MS-222, 2-phenoxyethanol and clove oil in deep anesthesia concentration) affects MO2 during the first few minutes after anesthetic recovery, but also during the following 4 h. It can be concluded that the metabolic rate is a good indicator of the goldfish's response to aquaculture practices involving energy expenditure and stress. Herbicides are widely applied in agriculture, which results in the pollution of ecosystems, including inland waters. Herbicides present in water may cause pathological changes in fish. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of a clomazone-based herbicide formulation, Command 480 EC, on the haematological and blood biochemical parameters of common carp as well as the microstructure of selected organs: gills, liver and trunk kidney. The fish were exposed to Command 480 EC at a concentration corresponding to 1 or 5 mg/l of clomazone (groups COM1 and COM2, respectively) for 10 days. The conducted analyses showed that the treatment caused numerous changes in red blood cell parameters, no significant changes in WBC count (in comparison to the control), and only a few transient changes in the leukogram. The only significant change in the biochemical parameters in comparison to the control was a decrease in the triglyceride concentration in fish observed after 3 days (group COM1) and 10 days (group COM2) of exposure to this herbicide. No considerable histopathological alterations were observed. The results of the present study suggest that exposure to the applied clomazone-based formulation can cause pathophysiological changes in common carp. The aim of the present study was to assess the effects of dietary supplementation with Lactobacillus salivarius (LS) ATCC 11741 and lutein (LU) on immunological, antioxidant, and growth responses, and resistance against Yersinia ruckeri infection in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). There were seven experimental diets containing un-supplemented diet (CTL), L. salivarius at 1 × 106 (LS6) and 1 × 108 (LS8) CFU/g, lutein at 50 (LU50) and 150 (LU150) mg/kg, L. salivarius at 1 × 106 CFU/g plus lutein at 50 g/kg (LS6+LU50), and L. salivarius at 1 × 108 CFU/g plus lutein at 150 g/kg (LS8+LU150). These diets were provided to the fish (N= 735; 14.0±0.38 g). After 60 days of feeding, all experimental treatments exhibited significantly higher growth performance, compared to the CTL treatment. The intestinal protease activity and the intestinal lactic acid bacteria population in the probiotic-treated fish were significantly higher than in the CTL fish. The intestinal lipase activity was only higher in the LS6+LU50 treatment, compared to the CTL treatment. Compared to the CTL treatment, the intestinal total bacterial count, and serum superoxide dismutase significantly increased in the LS6+LU50 and LS8+LU150 treatments. The serum catalase significantly increased in LU150, LS6+LU50, and LS8+LU150 treatments, and serum glutathione peroxidase significantly increased in the lutein-treated fish. All experimental treatments, particularly LS6+LU50 and LS8+LU150, had significantly lower serum malondialdehyde levels, compared to the CTL treatment. The levels of serum alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, and lactate dehydrogenase in LU50, LS6+LU50, and LS8+LU150 treatments were significantly lower than the CTL. All experimental treatments showed significantly higher serum lysozyme (LYZ), complement, blood respiratory burst activity (RB), and skin mucus alkaline phosphatase (ALP), compared to the CTL treatment. The highest serum LYZ, C4, total immunoglobulin (Ig), blood RB activity, and skin mucus peroxidase, ALP, and Ig were observed in the LS6+LU50 and LS8+LU150 treatments. All the experimental treatments, especially LS6+LU50, exhibited significantly lower mortality after the bacterial challenge compared to the CTL. In conclusion, dietary supplementation with 1 × 106 CFU/g L. salivarius and 50 mg/kg lutein can maximally improve growth performance, digestive enzymes, antioxidant parameters, immune responses, intestinal lactic acid bacteria, and resistance against yersiniosis in rainbow trout. Pesticides and heavy metals are considered as potent contaminants in aquatic environment. Both contaminants are sourced into the aquatic ecosystems by various types of anthropogenic as well as natural practices. Such types of aquatic contamination drastically affect the normal activity of associated living organisms particularly fish. Both the pesticides and heavy metals toxicity cause several negative effects on fish growth, physiology, immune response, reproduction, embryonic and larval development as well as different histopathology of major organs including fish gill, kidney, liver, gonads, and intestine. Besides, the consumption of contaminated fish poses a serious health concern to associated consumers. Considering these serious issues, the current review is designed to investigate the toxic effects of pesticides and heavy metals on different aspects of fishes along with their possible sources, major types, and mode of action as well as role of medicinal herbs to mitigate their toxicity. This study selected Trachinotus ovatus and Nibea albiflora as the focal subjects to investigate the impacts of probabilistic frequency of temperature increment through laboratory simulations that mimicked the seasonal water elevated temperature adjacent to two coastal nuclear power plants. This research was underpinned by the probabilistic analysis of temperature increase frequencies, aiming to evaluate the thermal tolerance of these species across different seasonal contexts. Results demonstrated that the T. ovatus did not exhibit mortality in the spring, autumn, and winter. Mortality in T. ovatus occurred only during the summer in temperature-duration probability experimental groups subjected to 8.5°C above ambient temperature with exposure probabilities of 50%, 75%, and 100%. The average survival rates were (93.3±3.3) %, (93.3±5.1) %, and (86.7±2.9) % respectively. The N. albiflora experienced mortality in spring, summer, autumn, and winter, with the highest mortality rate in summer. Compared to N. albiflora, T. ovatus exhibited significantly higher thermal tolerance across all seasons. As the experimental temperature increased and the duration probability rose, the mortality rates of both fish species showed an upward trend. There was an interaction between elevated temperature and duration probability, with the duration of different elevated temperature amplitudes significantly impacting the fish's survival rates. ZnO nanoparticles (ZnONPs) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are frequently used nanoparticles with unique features. Aquatic organisms are exposed to a combination of contaminants in natural water systems, so the combination effect of two or more nanomaterials has caused much concern. In this study, the toxicity to the liver of common carp was explored under four weeks of exposure to single ZnONPs or in combination with multi-walled CNTs (MWCNTs). The results demonstrated that ZnONPs induced pathological changes and apoptosis in the liver. In combination, decreased pathological changes were observed in the LSC-ZnONPs group (50 mg L-1 ZnONPs and 0.25 mg L-1 MWCNTs) at the microscopic level and ultrastructural level, and increased pathological changes in the HSC-ZnONPs group (50 mg L-1 ZnONPs and 2.5 mg L-1 MWCNTs). A 52% reduction in the percentage of TUNEL-positive nuclei in the LSC-ZnONPs group and a 33% increase in the HSC-ZnONPs group were observed compared to the ZnONPs group. The mRNA expression of apoptosis-related genes, including caspase3, BAX, and XBP1, were significantly up-regulated in the exposure groups, confirming the occurrence of apoptosis. Significantly decreased caspase 3 and BAX mRNA levels in the co-exposure groups were detected compared to the ZnONPs group. Nevertheless, the XBP1 mRNA level was significantly upregulated in the LSC-ZnONPs group, but downregulated in the HSC-ZnONPs group, indicating multiple signal pathways involved in the apoptosis. In conclusion, a low concentration of MWCNTs (0.25 mg L-1) decreased the toxic effect of ZnONPs on common carp, but a high concentration of MWCNTs (2.5 mg L-1) enhanced it. Water diversions that support agricultural and municipal use result in fish mortality through entrainment and impingement. Additionally, this infrastructure may attract both predators and prey fishes, thereby increasing predation rates and prey mortality near these anthropogenic contact points. The Sacramento–San Joaquin Delta (the Delta) in California's Central Valley is a tidal freshwater ecosystem that exports large volumes of water for municipal and agricultural use while at the same time providing valuable migratory and rearing habitat for imperilled fishes. Emigrating juvenile salmonids experience high mortality in the Delta, with predation by non‐native fishes contributing substantially.Therefore, this study had three main objectives. First, we determined if small water diversions aggregated piscivorous fishes like other similar structures in freshwater ecosystems. Second, we determined how small diversions may influence juvenile salmon predation risk in conjunction with other known predation risk factors (e.g. predator abundance, temperature and depth). Third, we assessed the predator assemblage, abundance and distribution to determine the likely predator composition in objectives one and two.Throughout the spring of 2021, we used ARIS (adaptive resolution imaging sonar; Sound Metrics) sonars to compare piscivore abundance at 30 water diversions in the north Delta to shorelines adjacent to diversions that did not contain these structures. We used predation event recorders (PERs) to assess the predation risk juvenile salmonids were exposed to, with linear distance (m) from diversions, and other predation risk factors in the north Delta. Finally, we used a boat electrofishing survey to determine the piscivore assemblage and compare spatial trends in black bass (Micropterus spp.) CPUE and relative abundance throughout these waterways.Piscivore abundance was greater near small water diversions than at adjacent shorelines and the predation risk of juvenile salmonids increased with diversion proximity. Additionally, predation risk increased with increasing piscivore abundance and decreasing water depth. The north Delta predator assemblage was dominated by black basses (Micropterus spp.), which likely drove the negative relationship of predation risk with water depth, given habitat requirements of these species. Furthermore, increasing smallmouth (Micropterus dolomieu) and spotted bass (Micropterus punctulatus) abundance in our northern study sites may have weakened temperature effects on predation, given metabolic requirements of these species.Our work demonstrated that small water diversions are likely to increase mortality of endangered salmonids, and that the north Delta predator assemblage was different than recorded by previous work in this system, changing predation risk factors. Although more work is needed to determine the population level impacts of diversions, the ubiquitous distribution of these structures warrants management solutions to reduce mortality from this source.These results indicate that in addition to entrainment and impingement, water diversions may increase mortality of small‐bodied fishes by attracting predators and elevating predation risk. Given the continual human demand for freshwater, predator–prey interactions should be considered along with entrainment and impingement when assessing intake infrastructure mitigation, especially when diversions co‐occur along migratory routes and essential habitat of imperilled fishes. In fish, the gill plays a vital role in regulating the absorption of trace metals and is also highly susceptible to metal toxicity. Trace metals such as iron (Fe), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), and manganese (Mn) are involved in various catalytic activities and molecular binding within the gill, thereby supporting a range of physiological processes in this organ. While beneficial at normal levels, these metals can become toxic when present in excess. Conversely, nonessential metals like cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) can gain entry into gill cells through similar metal transport pathways, potentially interfering with various cellular processes. The transepithelial transport of these metals across the gill epithelium is governed by a variety of metal transport and metal binding proteins. These include the Cu transporter 1 (CTR1), divalent metal transporter 1 (DMT1), and members of the Zrt-/Irt-like protein (ZIP) and zinc transport (ZnT) families. Additionally, some of these metals can compete with major ions (e.g., calcium, sodium) for absorption sites in the gill. This complex crosstalk suggests an interdependent mechanism that balances metal uptake to meet physiological needs while preventing excessive accumulation. In this article, I review the roles of trace metals in proteins/enzymes that support the different functions in the gill of teleost fish. I also discuss current understanding of the pathways involved in regulating the branchial uptake of metals and their influence on ionic regulation, and the potential detoxification mechanisms in the gill. Seminal studies from the early 20th century defined the structural changes associated with development and regeneration of the gills in goldfish at the gross morphological and cellular levels using standard techniques of light and electron microscopy. More recently, investigations using cell lineage tracing, molecular biology, immunohistochemistry and single-cell RNA-sequencing have pushed the field forward and have begun to reveal the cellular and molecular processes that orchestrate cell proliferation and regeneration in the gills. The gill is a multifunctional organ that mediates an array of important physiological functions, including respiration, ion regulation and excretion of waste products. It is comprised of unique cell types, such as pavement cells, ionocytes, chemoreceptors and undifferentiated stem or progenitor cells that regulate growth and replenish cell populations. The gills develop from the embryonic endoderm and are rich in cell types derived from the neural crest. The gills have the capacity to remodel themselves in response to environmental change, such as in the case of ionocytes, chemoreceptors and the interlamellar cell mass, and can completely regenerate gill filaments and lamellae. Both processes of remodeling and regeneration invariably involve cell proliferation. Although gill regeneration has been reported in only a limited number of fish species, the process appears to have many similarities to regeneration of other organs in fish and amphibians. The present article reviews the studies that have described gill development and growth, and that demonstrate a suite of genes, transcription factors and other proteins involved in cell proliferation and regeneration in the gills. This study expands previous work examining the effects on fishes from exposure to a single 4.5 kg underwater explosive detonation. Experiments were done in the field, with fish in cages at different distances from the source. Although our earlier work reported high acoustic dosage levels (e.g. based on peak pressure) correlating with severe injuries, dosage levels that result in moderate, or mild injuries were not clearly established. Thus, in this study, caged Pacific mackerel (Scomber japonicus) were placed at targeted ranges of 150–800 m from the source. All procedures were the same as in the earlier study except that animals were left at depth for ∼3 hours post-exposure to determine immediate effects on survival. Fish were then retrieved and assessed for physical damage. The only statistically significant tissue injuries were swim bladder bruising and in a reduction in inner ear sensory hair cell density that lessened with distance from the source. Furthermore, the incorporation of yeast supplements and feed additives has the potential to bolster disease prevention, development, and production within the aquaculture sector. Except for methionine, lysine, arginine, and phenylalanine, which are typically the limiting essential amino acids in various fish species, the various yeast species exhibit amino acid profiles that are advantageous when compared to fishmeal. The present review considers the potential nutritional suitability of several yeast species for fish, with particular attention to the various applications of yeast in aquaculture nutrition. The findings of this study indicate that the inclusion of yeast in the diet resulted in the most favorable outcomes, with improvements observed in the overall health, growth performance, and nutritional condition of the fish. Digestibility, a key factor in sustainable feed development, is discussed in special detail. Additionally, this review addresses the utilization of yeast as an immunostimulating agent for fish and its digestion in fish. Simple Summary: Clingfish are small fish species that spend most of their time hiding in various shelters on the seabed. Due to this way of life, their ecology is little known, although they are important for the ecosystem. The aim of the research was to investigate the diet of three clingfish species (Lepadogaster lepadogaster, L. candolii, and Apletodon incognitus) using a method based on the analysis of prey from their faeces. The results show that crustaceans are the most important prey for all three species, although the composition of the diet also depends on various factors, such as the size of the fish and the prey, the behaviour of the fish, the home range of the fish, and the availability of food. These results provide us with important information about the participation of clingfish in the food web and deepen our knowledge of the fish's diet and the factors that influence it. The results also show that the occurrence of predatory fish depends on the presence of their prey. Cryptobenthic fish are small benthic fish species that normally live in various hiding places. Due to their large numbers, they are very important for energy transfer to higher trophic levels. However, due to their small size and hidden lifestyle, knowledge about them and their ecology, including their diet, is still limited. Using a non-destructive method based on faecal pellets, we investigated the diet of three clingfish species, Lepadogaster lepadogaster, L. candolii, and Apletodon incognitus, in the shallow northern Adriatic Sea. To better understand the results, we studied the fauna of potential prey in the habitats of the fish studied and also took fish specimens to observe their behaviour in the laboratory. The three species feed predominantly on crustaceans, particularly amphipods, copepods, and decapods. The proportion of the different taxa in the diet depends on the species of clingfish, the size of the specimens, and the size of the prey. In addition, the behaviour of the fish, the home range of the specimens, and the availability of food played an important role. Typically, detecting this gene loss involves costly and complex techniques like sequencing or FISH. However, the MTAP gene, which is located near CDKN2A/B on the same chromosome, may provide a more accessible way to detect these losses through a simpler, more affordable test called immunohistochemistry (IHC). This study explored different concentrations and antibodies for MTAP and p16 across two institutions to evaluate their potential as surrogate markers for CDKN2A/B loss. The results showed that p16 expression varied and did not align with either MTAP expression or CDKN2A FISH results. This study suggests that IHC for MTAP is a promising, cost-effective method for identifying high-grade meningiomas, offering a quicker and less expensive alternative to existing techniques. Background: Homozygous cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor 2A/B (CDKN2A/B) loss is one of the parameters that support the designation of meningiomas as Central Nervous System (CNS) WHO grade 3 tumors. Evaluation of CDKN2A/B by sequencing or Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) is costly and not always readily accessible. An immunohistochemistry (IHC)-based marker for the evaluation of CDKN2A/B loss would provide faster results at a lower cost. Methods: This retrospective study included patients diagnosed with meningioma at our institution between 2016 and 2019. Archival tumor tissue was used for analysis. MTAP immunohistochemistry (IHC) was performed at various dilutions (1:1200, 1:400, 1:200, 1:100) using two different antibodies, and p16 IHC was conducted simultaneously. These analyses were carried out at two different institutions. To determine the sensitivity and specificity of MTAP and p16 as surrogate markers for CDKN2A/B loss, CDKN2A FISH was utilized as the gold standard. Results: Overall, 46/49 tumors showed strong MTAP staining (94%) at institution 1, and 44/49 (90%) showed either faint positive or positive results at institution 2. One grade 3 meningioma that demonstrated homozygous CDKN2A loss by FISH also showed loss of MTAP expression by IHC. One grade 2 meningioma showed regional CDKN2A loss by FISH and variable MTAP expression under different IHC conditions. MTAP expression evaluation was superior at a dilution of 1:100 with the Abnova Anti-MTAP Monoclonal antibody. Conclusions: P16 expression was variable and did not correlate with either MTAP expression or CDKN2A FISH results. Government policies for marine fisheries have been implemented in Cabo Verde since its independence in 1975, with the aim to prevent overexploitation of wild fish species and promote sustainable fishing practices. Nonetheless, only minor amendments have been made to the legal harvesting size, considering biological sciences. This study, therefore, adopted a transdisciplinary approach to assess the political, ecological, and social dimensions of current fishery policy interventions applicable to the commercially valuable pelagic species Decapterus macarellus (mackerel scad). An ex‐post analysis of relevant fishery management policies targeting D. macarellus was conducted. This was supplemented by strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) analysis conducted by key fisheries stakeholders. Stocks assessment was conducted on catch data before (2003–2007) and after (2017–2021) the policy interventions. This was followed by a survey of 175 fishery sector actors to understand their perception of the policies, compliance challenges, and recommendations for reforms. Results showed that although the mackerel scad landing size comparably increased, landing catches were on the decline. Most fisheries stakeholders are aware of the policies implemented and acknowledge their favorable developmental outcomes. However, certain gaps exist in the national marine fisheries policies. For example, there is an absence of follow‐up research on implemented fishing policies and a lack of monitoring data on the ecology and distribution of the mackerel scad, which hinders our understanding of the exact causes of the reported continual decrease in catches. There is, therefore, a need for regular monitoring of the environmental health of coastal and marine habitats to inform prioritization and/or reformulation of policy intervention measures to achieve intended conservation outcomes. The Myxosporea subclass harbours cnidarians myxozoans adapted for parasitism that infect mainly fishes worldwide. A total of 159 myxosporean species were described in South American waters until December 2016. These species were distributed by 24 genera, infecting 114 different host species in seven countries. Here, we present an update of the species described in South American countries from January 2017 to the present date, or those for which molecular data were made available in GenBank during this period. A total of 105 species distributed by 13 genera, parasitizing 59 host species are depicted in tabulated format including the species characteristics. Reports of infection with these parasites were found only in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, and Peru. The most common parasites were Myxobolus spp. and Henneguya spp., and freshwater fish were about four times more parasitized than saltwater ones. Thus, the knowledge of myxosporean diversity in South America seems to be shaped more by the presence of research groups in each country than by the continent's biogeographical conditions. In recent years, freshwater ecosystems in South America have become the site of discovery for a significant diversity of myxosporean genera previously associated with marine environments.
