Festuca makutrensis is an assumed tetraploid species of F. valesiaca agg. described from West Ukraine. However, its current interpretation seems misleading, as it is mostly based on the protologue and opinions of Russian authors, lacking knowledge of the type material and the locus classicus. Here, we collected robust population samples (20–30 plants per population) of known F. makutrensis populations in Ukraine (including locus classicus) and Eastern Poland, along with morphologically similar hexaploids, F. rupicola and F. trachyphylla (65 populations in total). We conducted measurements on 1553 flowering plants to analyze their morphology and examined 4439 leaves in cross section to observe their anatomy. Additionally, we determined ploidy in a selected subset of 61 plants using flow cytometry. Contrary to existing works, our findings unequivocally demonstrate that F. makutrensis is a hexaploid taxon. It closely resembles F. rupicola, with the only distinguishing feature being the ever-present, well-developed additional sclerenchyma strands on the leaf cross section. These strands can occasionally fuse with other strands and form irregular sclerenchyma rings in some (> 25%) plants within the population. The distribution of F. makutrensis appears to be limited to Northwest Podolia and Zhytomyr Polissia in Ukraine, as well as the Lublin Voivodeship in Eastern Poland. One of the most effective means of increasing urban green areas is the establishment of roof gardens. They have many positive properties and ecological functions, such as filling empty spaces with plants, protecting buildings, dust retention and air cleaning. In the case of extensive constructions, mostly Sedum species are used, planted as carpet-like "grass" sods or by installing modular units as plugs; however, with the use of other plant genera, the efficiency of ecological services could be increased by expanding the diversity. Festuca taxa have good drought resistance, and these plants tolerate temperature alterations well. Their application would increase the biodiversity, quality and decorative value of roof gardens. Experiments were carried out on nursery benches imitating a roof garden, with the use of modular elements intended for Sedum species, which facilitate the establishment of green roofs. In our trial, varieties of two European native species, Festuca glauca Vill. 'Uchte' and F. amethystina L. 'Walberla', were investigated. In order to find and determine the differences between the cultivars and the effects of the media (leaf mold and rhyolite tuff), we drew inferences after morphological (height, circumference, root weight, fresh and dry weight) and physiological tests (peroxidase and proline enzyme activity). We concluded that F. glauca 'Uchte' is recommended for roof garden conditions, planted in modular elements. Although the specimens were smaller in the medium containing fewer organic components than in the version with larger amounts, they were less exposed to the effects of drought stress. Abstract Background Tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) is an important cool-season perennial grass species. Hexaploid tall fescue has three distinct morphotypes used either as forage or turf purposes. Its chloroplast genome is conserved due to it being maternally inherited to the next generation progenies. To identify morphotype-specific DNA markers and the genetic variations, plastid genomes of all three tall fescue morphotypes, i.e., Continental cv. Texoma MaxQ II, Rhizomatous cv. Torpedo, and Mediterranean cv. Resolute, have been sequenced using Illumina MiSeq sequencing platform. Results The plastid genomes of Continental-, Rhizomatous-, and Mediterranean tall fescue were assembled into circular master molecules of 135,283 bp, 135,336 bp, and 135,324 bp, respectively. The tall fescue plastid genome of all morphotypes contained 77 protein-coding, 20 tRNAs, four rRNAs, two pseudo protein-coding, and three hypothetical protein-coding genes. We identified 630 SNPs and 124 InDels between Continental and Mediterranean, 62 SNPs and 20 InDels between Continental and Rhizomatous, and 635 SNPs and 123 InDels between Rhizomatous and Mediterranean tall fescue. Only four InDels in four genes (ccsA, rps18, accD, and ndhH-p) were identified, which discriminated Continental and Rhizomatous plastid genomes from the Mediterranean plastid genome. Here, we identified and reported eight InDel markers (NRITCHL18, NRITCHL35, NRITCHL43, NRITCHL65, NRITCHL72, NRITCHL101, NRITCHL104, and NRITCHL110) from the intergenic regions that can successfully discriminate tall fescue morphotypes. Divergence time estimation revealed that Mediterranean tall fescue evolved approximately 7.09 Mya, whereas the divergence between Continental- and Rhizomatous tall fescue occurred about 0.6 Mya. Conclusions To our knowledge, this is the first report of the assembled plastid genomes of Rhizomatous and Mediterranean tall fescue. Our results will help to identify tall fescue morphotypes at the time of pre-breeding and will contribute to the development of lawn and forage types of commercial varieties.

Genome or genomic dominance (GD) is a phenomenon observed in hybrids when one parental genome becomes dominant over the other. It is manifested by the replacement of chromatin of the submissive genome by that of the dominant genome and by biased gene expression. Nucleolar dominance (ND) - the functional expression of only one parental set of ribosomal genes in hybrids - is another example of an intragenomic competitive process which, however, concerns ribosomal DNA only. Although GD and ND are relatively well understood, the nature and extent of their potential interdependence is mostly unknown. Here, we ask whether hybrids showing GD also exhibit ND and, if so, whether the dominant genome is the same. To test this, we used hybrids between Festuca and Lolium grasses (Festulolium), and between two Festuca species in which GD has been observed (with Lolium as the dominant genome in Festulolium and F. pratensis in interspecific Festuca hybrids). Using amplicon sequencing of ITS1 and ITS2 of the 45S ribosomal DNA (rDNA) cluster and molecular cytogenetics, we studied the organization and expression of rDNA in leaf tissue in five hybrid combinations, four generations and 31 genotypes [F. pratensis × L. multiflorum (F1, F2, F3, BC1), L. multiflorum × F. pratensis (F1), L. multiflorum × F. glaucescens (F2), L. perenne × F. pratensis (F1), F. glaucescens × F. pratensis (F1)]. We have found that instant ND occurs in Festulolium, where expression of Lolium-type rDNA reached nearly 100% in all F1 hybrids and was maintained through subsequent generations. Therefore, ND and GD in Festulolium are manifested by the same dominant genome (Lolium). We also confirmed the concordance between GD and ND in an interspecific cross between two Festuca species. Festuca arundinacea Schreb. as an important turf widely exposed to biotic and abiotic stresses. Therefore, optimization of an efficient in vitro culture and transformation method to create optimal traits and tolerance against stresses as a major problem, is essential. In this research, in order to callus induction, embryos of ‘Barlexas II’, ‘Barvado’, ‘Coronado TDH’, and ‘Finelawn Elite’ cultivars were transferred on callogenesis medium containing 0–15 mg/L 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) and after callus formation, the explants cultured on the regeneration medium added with 0–1.75 mg/L 6-benzyladenine (BA). Out of the four cultivars tested, ‘Barvado’ in 7.5 mg/L (51.83 %), and ‘Finelawn Elite’ in 10 mg/L 2,4-D (54.06 %) had better callusing, respectively. However, regeneration percentage was higher in ‘Barlexas II’ (73.15 %) and ‘Finelawn Elite’ (70 %) in 0.5 mg/L BA. Transformation was done in Murashige and Skoog (MS) modified medium by Agrobacterium tumefaciens strain LBA4404 harboring binary vector pCAMBIA 2301. Transgenic calli and plantlets were confirmed by GUS gene expression as non-destructive, non-invasive and useful marker. Maximum rate of callus transformation was shown on modified medium type 11 for ‘Coronado TDH’ and ‘Barlexas II’ (23 % and 22 %, respectively). When the calli samples were placed on the selection media, a high rate of calli (with no successful activity of neomycin phosphotransferase II (NPTII)) had not the ability to regenerate and died. Therefore, the highest rate of regenerated transgenic plantlets containing NPTII and GUS genes (6 %) was belonged to medium type 6 and ‘Coronado TDH’.

Crossing over, in addition to its strictly genetic role, also performs a critical mechanical function, by bonding homologues in meiosis. Hence, it is responsible for an orderly reduction of the chromosome number. As such, it is strictly controlled in frequency and distribution. The well-known crossover control is positive crossover interference which reduces the probability of a crossover in the vicinity of an already formed crossover. A poorly studied aspect of the control is chromatid interference. Such analyses are possible in very few organisms as they require observation of all four products of a single meiosis. Here, we provide direct evidence of chromatid interference. Using in situ probing in two interspecific plant hybrids (Lolium multiflorum×Festuca pratensis and Allium cepa×A. roylei) during anaphase I, we demonstrate that the involvement of four chromatids in double crossovers is significantly more frequent than expected (64% versus 25%). We also provide a physical measure of the crossover interference distance, covering ~30-40% of the relative chromosome arm length, and show that the centromere acts as a barrier for crossover interference. The two arms of a chromosome appear to act as independent units in the process of crossing over. Chromatid interference has to be seriously addressed in genetic mapping approaches and further studies.

Festuca is one of the most ecologically and economically important genera of temperate grasses. Species of its type subgenus, Festuca, are common components of cool-seasonal pastures and are especially frequent in mountainous areas, where there are often several morphologically similar species that grow in the same or comparable habitats and sometimes live in sympatry. Nuclear DNA assessments by flow cytometry can be used to identify taxa and uncover new ploidy levels in species complexes for which new chromosome data are provided or previous chromosome counts and genome sizes are known. Holoploid (2C) values of newly studied Pyrenean Festuca subgen. Festuca sects. Eskia, Festuca and Aulaxyper species fall within the expected ranges for these taxonomic groups and include 2x, 4x, 6x and 8x ploidy levels. Monoploid (1Cx) genome sizes of diploids and polyploids are larger in the species of the more ancestral F. sect. Eskia group showing a decreasing trend in the species of the more recently evolved F. sects. Festuca and Aulaxyper lineages. 1Cx values of high polyploid Aulaxyper taxa are among the smallest of the three Festuca sections, corroborating previous findings. Our analysis provides new genome size values and inferred ploidy levels for hexaploid F.heteromalla and octoploid F.trichophylla and highlights the genomic and ecological differentiation of tetraploid F.gautieri susbsp. gautieri from diploid F.gautieri subsp. scoparia. Background and Aims Grasses of the Festuca genus have complex phylogenetic relations due to morphological similarities among species and interspecific hybridization processes. Within Patagonian fescues, information concerning phylogenetic relationships is very scarce. In Festuca pallescens , a widely distributed species, the high phenotypic variability and the occurrence of interspecific hybridization preclude a clear identification of the populations. Given the relevance of natural rangelands for livestock production and their high degradation due to climate change, conservation actions are needed and knowledge about genetic variation is required. Methods To unravel the intraspecific phylogenetic relations and to detect genetic differences, we studied 21 populations of the species along its natural geographical distribution by coupling both molecular [internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and trn L-F markers] and morpho-anatomical analyses. Bayesian inference, maximum likelihood and maximum parsimony methods were applied to assemble a phylogenetic tree, including other native species. The morphological data set was analysed by discriminant and cluster analyses. Key Results The combined information of the Bayesian tree (ITS marker), the geographical distribution of haplotype variants (trn L-F marker) and the morpho-anatomical traits, distinguished populations located at the margins of the distribution. Some of the variants detected were shared with other sympatric species of fescues. Conclusions These results suggest the occurrence of hybridization processes between species of the genus at peripheral sites characterized by suboptimal conditions, which might be key to the survival of these populations. Occurrence of Festuca apennina De Not. (4 × Fape), F. pratensis Huds. (2 × Fp) and the triploid, sterile hybrid F. apennina × F. pratensis (3 × Fape × Fp) was studied in 12 regions of the Swiss Alps. In total, 1908 plants were sampled in elevational strata scaled by 50 m between 850 and 2000 m a.s.l., and accompanying vegetation was assessed for each sampling point. The hybrid 3 × Fape × Fp was more frequent and more dominant than both parental species around 1400 m, and had a wider elevational distribution than 2 × Fp and 4 × Fape, which were confined to lower and higher elevation, respectively. As evidenced by their preferred accompanying species, 2 × Fp colonizes dryer, nutrient poorer environments than 4 × Fape which clearly prefers wet and nutrient rich environments. On the contrary, 3 × Fape × Fp thrives similarly well in both environments. The ability to reach an important biomass proportion in a sward, and the wide environmental adaptation of 3 × Fape × Fp is favored by its capacity to strongly expand by rhizomes. A single genotype of 3 × Fape × Fp was found to colonize an entire field of 2.3 ha with a maximum distance between clonal plants of 304 m. It is concluded that 3 × Fape × Fp is a potentially valuable pasture plant for use at higher altitudes, but it may reduce biodiversity via suppressing less competitive plant species. As atividades de introdução, avaliação e melhoramento de plantas forrageiras em Santa Catarina tiveram início a partir de 1912, quando o Ministério da Agricultura implantou várias unidades de fomento à agropecuária no Brasil. O Posto Zootécnico Federal de Lages foi uma dessas instituições pioneiras. Na mesma década foram introduzidas algumas forrageiras exóticas e posteriormente avaliadas espécies nativas. No entanto, foi a partir de 1975, com a fundação da Empresa de Pesquisa Agropecuária de Santa Catarina (Empasc), que os trabalhos de melhoramento tiveram impulso, com várias estações experimentais se dedicando a esta atividade, principalmente a Estação Experimental de Lages, que possuía pesquisador melhorista entre seus colaboradores. O objetivo deste artigo é caracterizar e registrar as características agronômicas dos cultivares lançados pela Epagri desde a década de 1980, muitos dos quais são cultivares importantes nos sistemas pecuários de Santa Catarina e em outras regiões do sul do Brasil, ou apresentam potencial como material genético para a seleção de novos cultivares. Destacam-se os cultivares SCS314 Santa Vitória e SCS315 Catarina Gigante, respectivamente de aveia-perene e missioneira-gigante, únicos de suas espécies registrados no Brasil.

Plants harbor a large diversity of endophytic microbes. Meadow fescue (Festuca pratensis) is a cool-season grass known for its symbiotic relationship with the systemic and vertically—via seeds—transmitted fungal endophyte Epichloë uncinata, yet its effects on plant hormones and the microbial community is largely unexplored. Here, we sequenced the endophytic bacterial and fungal communities in the leaves and roots, analyzing phytohormone concentrations and plant performance parameters in Epichloë-symbiotic (E+) and Epichloë-free (E-) individuals of two meadow fescue cultivars. The endophytic microbial community differed between leaf and root tissues independent of Epichloë symbiosis, while the fungal community was different in the leaves of Epichloë-symbiotic and Epichloë-free plants in both cultivars. At the same time, Epichloë symbiosis decreased salicylic acid and increased auxin concentrations in leaves. Epichloë-symbiotic plants showed higher biomass and higher seed mass at the end of the season. Our results demonstrate that Epichloë symbiosis alters the leaf fungal microbiota, which coincides with changes in phytohormone concentrations, indicating that Epichloë endophytes affect both plant immune responses and other fungal endophytes. Whether the effect of Epichloë endophytes on other fungal endophytes is connected to changes in phytohormone concentrations remains to be elucidated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A process of plant recovery after drought cessation is a complex trait which has not been fully recognized. The most important organ associated with this phenomenon in monocots, including forage grasses, is the crown tissue located between shoots and roots. The crown tissue is a meristematic crossroads for metabolites and other compounds between these two plant organs. Here, for the first time, we present a metabolomic and lipidomic study focused on the crown tissue under drought and recovery in forage grasses, important for agriculture in European temperate regions. The plant materials involve high (HDT) and low drought-tolerant (LDT) genotypes of Festuca arundinacea , and Lolium multiflorum/F. arundinacea introgression forms. The obtained results clearly demonstrated that remodeling patterns of the primary metabolome and lipidome in the crown under drought and recovery were different between HDT and LDT plants. Furthermore, HDT plants accumulated higher contents of primary metabolites under drought in the crown tissue, especially carbohydrates which could function as osmoprotectants and storage materials. On the other hand, LDT plants characterized by higher membranes damage under drought, simultaneously accumulated membrane phospholipids in the crown and possessed the capacity to recover their metabolic functions after stress cessation to the levels observed in HDT plants. Introduction Turfgrasses, as one of the important components of urban landscapes, have played a vital role in this regard. However, the main problems of turfgrass development are the cost of turfgrass seeds, maintenance costs such as moving, as well as the high water requirement in arid and semi-arid regions. Thus, the reduction of lawn culture in the landscape is one of the decision has taken in parks and green spaces organization of Tehran, Isfahan and even Mashhad. For over ten years, researchers have been looking for alternatives to conventional grass lawns to reduce the high cost of maintenance especially irrigation cost in urban landscapes. According to many researches, one of the potential ground cover alternatives that might be used instead of turfgrass is White Clover. Clover (Trifolium spp.) from Fabaceae family is a genus of about 300 species. Materials and Methods The aim of this experiment was to compare three common turfgrasses with two clover varieties as turf replacement to reduce landscape maintenance cost specially moving cost. So, some growth and qualitative factors of clover lawn: Trifolium repens var. Calway and Trifolium repens var. Pipolina (micro clover) and three turfgrasses of Festuca arundinacea L. and Lolium perenne L. and commercial sport turf mixture (from NAk-Nederland Ltd.) were compared together. This research was conducted in randomized complete block design with three replications in the research field of the Department of Horticultural Science and Landscape Engineering‚ Faculty of Agricultural‚ Ferdowsi University of Mashhad‚ Mashhad‚ Iran, during 2016 and 2017. The site (59º 38′ E and 36º 16 ′ N; elevation 989 m) is located in an arid and semi- arid region with mean annual rainfall 233.8 mm and long term averages of maximum and minimum temperature are 22.5 ºC and 9.3 ºC‚ respectively. Turfgrass plots were established by directly sowing the seeds in April, 2016. The planting rate of the seedling considering their pure live seeds (PLS) were 45 g.m-2 for Lolium perenne, 34 g.m-2 for Festuca arundinacea, 6.5 g.m-2 for Trifolium repens, 5.5 g.m-2 for micro clover and 39 g.m-2 for commercial mixture of sport turf. The plots were 1 m2 (1m×1m) in size and were prepared after plowing and leveling the soil. The seeds were hand sown and covered with a thin layer of leaf compost and sand. Results and Discussion According to the results in the first evaluation of emergence percentage, Lolium perenne had the highest emergence percentage. After 36 days from culture, all plants had 92-98 % coverage which did not have any significant difference among grasses with clover lawns. In terms of density, uniformity and weed density, there was no significant difference between the studied plants. In the other hands, white clover showed the best quality after clipping in both years. At the point of growth index, which have done in this experiment by measuring height and dry weight of clipping, grass lawns had the higher growth index in compered to clover lawn in both years. Festuca arundinacea and Lolium perenne had the highest growth index and white and micro clover had the lowest growth. Also, with air warming, Festuca arundinacea became dominated plant in height and clipping dry weight. In July, Festuca arundinacea produced the highest clipping dry weight by 40 gr.m-2, Lolium perenne (19.52), commercial sport turf (15.68), white clover (6.24) and micro clover (0.36) gr.m-2. Conclusion One of the problems of landscape is reduction of maintenance costs such as mowing. So, the low growth of white and micro clover is a positive factor in reduction of the moving costs than turfgrasses. Also, the coverage and proper density of clover lawns are similar to grass lawns and did not have a significant difference with them. The character of low growth can be effective in reduction of irrigation costs in white and micro clover, which requires more research and examination in future. This is a positive point in the white clover and micro clover that do not need to move or cut every months. Almost, clover moving is recommended for removing their flower. Therefore, it is recommended to use white and micro clover as a replacement with less maintenance costs in landscape. Finally, the results of cultivation of grass and clover as monoculture in this study can be used to produce clover-grass mixtures suitable for the climate of our country (arid and semi-arid regions), instead of importing turf mixtures from European countries.

It has been observed a striking two-fold difference in genome size between the broad-leaved (BL) and fine-leaved (FL) Loliinae diploids and a general trend of genome reduction of some high polyploids. We have used genome skimming data to uncover the composition, abundance, and potential phylogenetic signal of repetitive elements across 47 representatives of the main Loliinae lineages. Independent and comparative analyses of repetitive sequences and of 5S rDNA loci were performed for all taxa under study and for four evolutionary Loliinae groups [Loliinae, Broad-leaved (BL), Fine-leaved (FL), and Schedonorus lineages]. Our data showed that the proportion of the genome covered by the repeatome in the Loliinae species was relatively high (average 51.8%), ranging from high percentages in some diploids (68.7%) to low percentages in some high-polyploids (30.7%), and that changes in their genome sizes were likely caused by gains or losses in their repeat elements. Ty3-gypsy Retand and Ty1-copia Angela retrotransposons were the most frequent repeat families in the Loliinae although the relatively more conservative Angela repeats presented the highest correlation of repeat content with genome size variation and the highest phylogenetic signal of the whole repeatome. By contrast, Athila retrotransposons presented evidence of recent proliferations almost exclusively in the Lolium clade. The repeatome evolutionary networks showed an overall topological congruence with the nuclear 35S rDNA phylogeny and a geographic-based structure for some lineages. The evolution of the Loliinae repeatome suggests a plausible scenario of recurrent allopolyploidizations followed by diploidizations that generated the large genome sizes of BL diploids as well as large genomic rearrangements in highly Frontiers in hybridogenous lineages that caused massive repeatome and genome contractions in the Schedonorus and Aulaxyper polyploids. Fine fescues (Festuca sp.) are a group of species that require fewer inputs, such as fertilizer, than other cool-season species managed for turf. They are adapted to infertile, acidic soils; shade; and drought. One area that poses additional challenges is the lack of weed control options for fine fescues during establishment from seed. Mesotrione is a herbicide that provides preemergence control of many broadleaf and grassy weeds, such as annual bluegrass (Poa annua), but is currently not labeled for use in fine fescues at seeding. The objectives of this research were 1) to use a recurrent selection technique to develop mesotrione-tolerant chewings fescue (Festuca rubra ssp. commutata), hard fescue (Festuca brevipila), and strong creeping red fescue (F. rubra spp. rubra); and 2) to conduct field trials to compare the new selections to commercially available cultivars and experimental lines not selected for tolerance to mesotrione. Progress was made after each of the three generations of recurrent selection. The top statistical grouping of entries for injury following application of mesotrione at the 8-oz/acre rate included all the third-generation (G3) hard fescues, all the G3 chewings fescues, and the G3 strong creeping red fescue STB1 Composite. After three generations, selections of hard, chewings, and strong creeping red fescues had equivalent or better tolerance to mesotrione than tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea) and kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis) cultivars, which are on the label for safe use at seeding. These new selections would provide turf managers an option to control weeds using mesotrione during seedling establishment of fine fescues.

Festulolium are hybrids obtained by inter crossing of species from the genera Festuca and Lolium. Initially, idea was to combine Festuca tolerance to abiotic stresses and edaphic and climatic adaptability with Lolium high yield, digestibility and compatibility with intensive grasslands management. All Festulolium cultivars of the predominant contribution of Lolium genome (Lolioid type) are productive, with high quality and digestible forage, but their areal of cropping is limited according to Lolium drought susceptibility. Persistency and productivity of 15 different Lolioid Festulolium cultivars and 6 standard Festuca and Lolium species cultivars were investigated in a moderate continental climate in Kruševac, Serbia. Plots in the trial (7,5m2 ) were completely randomized, each in 3 replications. Summer persistency was analyzed by evaluation of ground cover reduction after summer periods in the second and third years. Concerning hybrid combination, best persistency (38.5% of coverage reduction in the third year) was determined for hybrid between Lolium multiflorum x Festuca arundinacea var. glaucescens even though there was only one cultivar of this type. The majority of cultivars were Lolium multiflorum x Festuca pratensis hybrids (8) and they showed residual coverage between 30 and 52%. At the end of the third year of the study, the highest dry matter yield was determined for hybrids Lolium multiflorum x Festuca gigantea and Lolium multiflorum x Festuca pratensis type. The general conclusion is that most cultivars suffered from severe stand density reduction after the first year of cutting and therefore had a lower dry matter yield compared to Festuca control cultivars, but showed significantly better persistency and higher values for dry matter yield in comparison with Lolium cultivars. A new species of Festuca from the Western Taurus Mountains (Antalya, Turkey) is described here and named F. albomontana. The new species can clearly be distinguished from the other species included in the F. alpina group by its leaf anatomical features. It has a geographically isolated position in the Western Tauruses whereas a closely related species, F. sommieri, is very local in the Black Sea Region of Turkey. It is suggested that it should be in the "critically endangered" threat category according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) criteria. Festulolium are hybrids between species within the Lolium and Festuca genera. They are attractive candidates for hybridisation due to their complementary characteristics in the context of forage production and environmental challenges, with Lolium exhibiting greater digestibility and Festuca possessing superior resilience to abiotic stress. To establish the extent of the representation of these characteristics in different Festulolium hybrids, a five-year field experiment was undertaken in a mild Atlantic climate. Four alternative species combinations and six pure species (controls) were evaluated for dry matter yield and persistency from 2014 to 2018, and various nutritional parameters in the first silage cut were measured from 2015 to 2017. Festulolium hybrids derived from L. multiflorum were found to group with both Lolium and Festuca pure species for a mean ground score to evaluate persistency (P < 0.05). Hybrid types of the L. perenne lineage were found to have ground score values more alike to their Lolium component and distinct from the F. pratensis pure species. In terms of dry matter yield, the majority of L. multiflorum hybrids observed formed a higher yielding group with the tetraploid L. multiflorum pure species and distinct from diploid F. pratensis pure species, whereas all other hybrid types and controls shared groups in common. For the nutrient content parameters including dry matter digestibility, water soluble sugars, and buffering capacity, Lolium pure species exhibited more favourable values, whereas hybrids were largely found to display intermediate to low values. Festuca pure species consistently exhibited poorer values with the exception of crude protein content where F. pratensis displayed the highest values and also the 2017 measurement of buffering capacity. In conclusion, the Festulolium hybrids shared characteristics with both parental types, but they often showed a greater likeness to the Lolium component.

The Schedonorus-Lolium complex of the subtribe Loliinae (Poaceae) includes several economically important forage and turf grasses. This complex encompasses Lolium Linnaeus, 1753, Festuca Linnaeus, 1753 subgenus Schedonorus (P. Beauvois, 1824) Petermann, 1849 and Micropyropsis Romero Zarco et Cabezudo, 1983. New FISH results of 5S and 18S--26S rDNA sequences are presented for three species and the results are interpreted in a review of distribution patterns of 5S and 18S--26S rDNA sequences among other species in the complex. Micropyropsis tuberosa Romero Zarco et Cabezudo, 1983 (2n = 2x = 14) displayed a distribution pattern of rDNA sequences identical to that of F. pratensis Hudson, 1762, supporting a close phylogenetic relationship at the bottom of the phylogenetic tree. "Lolium multiflorum" Lamarck, 1779 accessions sourced from Morocco showed a different pattern from European L. multiflorum and could be a unique and previously uncharacterised taxon. North African Festuca simensis Hochstetter ex A. Richard, 1851 had a marker pattern consistent with allotetraploidy and uniparental loss of one 18S--26S rDNA locus. This allotetraploid has previously been suggested to have originated from a hybrid with Festuca glaucescens (Festuca arundinacea var. glaucescens Boissier, 1844). However, the distribution patterns of the two rDNA sequences in this allotetraploid do not align with F. glaucescens, suggesting that its origin from this species is unlikely. Furthermore, comparisons with other higher alloploids in the complex indicate that F. simensis was a potential donor of two sub-genomes of allohexaploid Festuca gigantea (Linnaeus) Villars, 1787. In the overall complex, the proximal locations of both rDNA markers were conserved among the diploid species. Two types of synteny of the two markers could, to a considerable extent, distinguish allo- and autogamous Lolium species. The ancestral parentage of the three Festuca allotetraploids has not yet been determined, but all three appear to have been sub-genome donors to the higher allopolypoids of sub-genus Schedonorus. The subtribe Loliinae is one of the largest subtribes of Poeae with about 600 species. Festuca is a large genus with close relations to other genera as Lolium, Castellia, and Vulpia. The taxonomic history of the Festuca‐Lolium species group is very complicated. The polyploidy and hybridization make it more confusing. Due to the morphological similarities between genera identification is very difficult, the aim of the present study is to provide the taxonomic characters for the delimitation of the taxa of subtribe Loliinae. We used scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques for the evaluation of the lemma and palea surface micromorphology for 33 species of this subtribe. Multivariate statistical analysis was used to show the species groupings. Factor analysis based on the principal component analysis showed the diagnostic importance of each of the characters. The lemma and palea epidermal patterns of Castellia, Festuca, and Lolium were examined, and results revealed that Lolium and Vulpia sensu lato species made separate groups nested in the Festuca clusters. The length of the long cell of the lemma, prickle in the lemma and palea, the wall shape of long cells of the lemma, wax type, silica bodies of lemma and palea, and the short cells in palea were important diagnostic characters for the species studied. The measured and evaluated set of lemma and palea micromorphological features was unable to provide the delimitation of the Festuca genus as subgeneric or sectional level. Abstract Background Cultivated grasses are an important source of food for domestic animals worldwide. Increased knowledge of their genomes can speed up the development of new cultivars with better quality and greater resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses. The most widely grown grasses are tetraploid ryegrass species (Lolium) and diploid and hexaploid fescue species (Festuca). In this work, we characterized repetitive DNA sequences and their contribution to genome size in five fescue and two ryegrass species as well as one fescue and two ryegrass cultivars. Results Partial genome sequences produced by Illumina sequencing technology were used for genome-wide comparative analyses with the RepeatExplorer pipeline. Retrotransposons were the most abundant repeat type in all seven grass species. The Athila element of the Ty3/gypsy family showed the most striking differences in copy number between fescues and ryegrasses. The sequence data enabled the assembly of the long terminal repeat (LTR) element Fesreba, which is highly enriched in centromeric and (peri)centromeric regions in all species. A combination of fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) with a probe specific to the Fesreba element and immunostaining with centromeric histone H3 (CENH3) antibody showed their co-localization and indicated a possible role of Fesreba in centromere function. Conclusions Comparative repeatome analyses in a set of fescues and ryegrasses provided new insights into their genome organization and divergence, including the assembly of the LTR element Fesreba. A new LTR element Fesreba was identified and found in abundance in centromeric regions of the fescues and ryegrasses. It may play a role in the function of their centromeres.

Plants harbor a large diversity of endophytic microbes. Meadow fescue (Festuca pratensis) is a cool-season grass known for its symbiotic relationship with the systemic and vertically—via seeds—transmitted fungal endophyte Epichloë uncinata, yet its effects on plant hormones and the microbial community is largely unexplored. Here, we sequenced the endophytic bacterial and fungal communities in the leaves and roots, analyzing phytohormone concentrations and plant performance parameters in Epichloë-symbiotic (E+) and Epichloë-free (E-) individuals of two meadow fescue cultivars. The endophytic microbial community differed between leaf and root tissues independent of Epichloë symbiosis, while the fungal community was different in the leaves of Epichloë-symbiotic and Epichloë-free plants in both cultivars. At the same time, Epichloë symbiosis decreased salicylic acid and increased auxin concentrations in leaves. Epichloë-symbiotic plants showed higher biomass and higher seed mass at the end of the season. Our results demonstrate that Epichloë symbiosis alters the leaf fungal microbiota, which coincides with changes in phytohormone concentrations, indicating that Epichloë endophytes affect both plant immune responses and other fungal endophytes. Whether the effect of Epichloë endophytes on other fungal endophytes is connected to changes in phytohormone concentrations remains to be elucidated.

There is a balance between DM yield and feed value when choosing types of grasses on a farm depending on the acreages of farmland and types of ruminants to be fed. Therefore, optimisation of the harvest strategy for grass silage is important for profitable dairy farming. Tall fescue has high DM yield and can replace traditional grasses, such as timothy, in Northern Europe in a changing climate as it has been shown to be more drought tolerant. As differences in climate responses previously have been related to differences in cell wall structure between grass species and, consequently, in digestibility, it is highly relevant to compare these species at similar maturity stages and to investigate if a very early harvest date will diminish potential differences between the species. This study evaluated the effects of harvest date and forage species on the concentration of hydroxycinnamic acids in silages and its relationship to feed efficiency of dairy cows. Tall fescue and timothy were harvested at very early date on May 25 or at early date on May 31 in the spring growth cycle. Forty lactating dairy cows were used in a block design. Cows received 1 of 4 treatments: (1) tall fescue harvested at very early date, (2) timothy harvested at very early date, (3) tall fescue harvested at early date, and (4) timothy harvested at early date. Diets were formulated to have the same forage-to-concentrate ratio (49:51 on DM basis). Tall fescue silages showed greater concentrations of DM, ash, and CP than timothy silages. Grasses harvested at early date showed greater concentrations of NDF, ADL, and cell wall than grasses harvested at very early date. Tall fescue silages showed greater concentration of p-coumaric acid and lower in vitro organic matter digestibility (IVOMD) compared to timothy silages. Milk production and composition were not affected by treatments but cows fed tall fescue-based diets showed lower milk protein yield and greater milk urea nitrogen than when timothy-based diets were fed. Furthermore, cows receiving timothy-based diets showed greater feed efficiency compared to cows receiving tall fescue-based diets. Abstract Background Species of the Festuca and Lolium genera, as well as intergeneric Festuca × Lolium (Festulolium) hybrids, are valuable fodder and turf grasses for agricultural and amenity purposes worldwide. Festulolium hybrids can merge in their genomes agronomically important characteristics. However, in polyploid plants, especially in allopolyploids, the hybridization of divergent genomes could contribute to various abnormalities, such as variability in chromosome number, structural rearrangements, and/or disorders in inheritance patterns. Here we studied these issues in allotetraploid Festuca pratensis × Lolium perenne hybrids. Results Cytogenetic procedures, including fluorescent in situ hybridization, genomic in situ hybridization, and molecular markers – inter-simple sequence repeats (ISSR) were exploited. This cytogenetic approach indicated the dynamics in the number and distribution of ribosomal RNA genes and structural rearrangements for both parental genomes (Festuca and Lolium) in hybrid karyotypes. The separate analysis of F. pratensis and L. perenne chromosomes in hybrid plants (F2-F3 generations of F. pratensis × L. perenne) revealed the asymmetrical level of rearrangements. Recognized structural changes were mainly located in the distal part of chromosome arms, and in chromosomes bearing ribosomal DNA, they were more frequently mapped in arms without this sequence. Based on the ISSR markers distribution, we found that the tetrasomic type of inheritance was characteristic for the majority of ISSR loci, but the disomic type was also observed. Nonetheless, no preference in the transmission of either Festuca or Lolium alleles to the following generations of allotetraploid F. pratensis × L. perenne hybrid was observed. Conclusion Our study reports cytogenetic and molecular genotyping of the F. pratensis × L. perenne hybrid and its following F2-F3 progenies. The analysis of 137 allotetraploid F. pratensis × L. perenne hybrids revealed the higher level of recombination in chromosomes derived from F. pratensis genome. The results of ISSR markers indicated a mixed model of inheritance, which may be characteristic for these hybrids.

Algeria is a country rich in phytogenetic resources, especially those of pastoral and forage interest. Unfortunately, few studies have been conducted to characterize Algerian local ecotypes. Recently, advances in next‐generation sequencing technologies have allowed for robust genotyping by sequencing (GBS) for single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) discovery, making the characterization of plant relationships with complex and unsequenced genomes more feasible. In the present study, we investigate the genetic diversity of cocksfoot and tall fescue ecotypes from different regions in Algeria, using the SNP variation supplied by a GBS analysis. We compared ecotypes to two common cultivars of both species. A total of 787 SNP markers for cocksfoot and 743 for tall fescue were obtained, and the diversity analysis revealed that 88% and 86% of overall variation in cocksfoot and tall fescue, respectively, were within populations rather than among them. Genetic structure analysis revealed a moderate genetic differentiation among accessions with a mean Fst value of 0.127 for cocksfoot and 0.140 for tall fescue, with high gene flow (NmOrchardgrass = 1.723, NmTall fescue = 1.535) and no significant isolation‐by‐distance pattern. A unweighted pair group method with arithmetic mean tree (UPGMA) and principal component analysis revealed the genetic distinctness of populations from cultivars for each species. The flow cytometry analysis confirmed the tetraploid level of cocksfoot and the hexaploid level of all tall fescue entries but one. Although the cocksfoot populations were distinct from the cultivars, the Ruines de djemila population had the broadest base and showed the closest relative relationship to the two cultivars. Festuca indigesta subsp. indigesta (Poaceae) is endemic to the southeast of Spain, and until recently, it was considered that its range of distribution was restricted to the siliceous core of Sierra Nevada. However, it has been recently extended in the territory to others calcareous mountains. This study investigates the cytogenetic variability throughout the geographic range of this taxon, the possible edaphic preferences of each cytotype, and the morphological variation of cytotypes. Genome sizes and ploidy levels were estimated using flow cytometry and chromosome count. Soil samples were collected to test the nature of the substrate, i.e., pH, and calcium and magnesium contents. Finally, morphological characters were measured in herbarium specimens. This study provides the first genome size data for the species. Hidden cytogenetic diversity was detected in the taxon, comprising hexaploid (2n = 6x = 42), octoploid (2n = 8x = 56) and dodecaploid (2n = 12x = 84) individuals. No relationship between substrate nature and cytotype was observed. Morphological differences were detected for the size of floral parts and stomata among cytotypes, but these were blurred if the entire morphological variation range was considered. Our results suggest that each mountain range could act as a reservoir of morphologically cryptic genetic diversity regarding this taxon.

The genus Festuca L. (subtribe Loliinae), which encompasses about 500 species, is one of the largest genera of the Poeae tribe and is distributed worldwide. The taxonomy of the genus Festuca and the subtribe Loliinae remains a subject of debate until now. Taking into account that the comparison of the 5S rDNA intergenic spacer (IGS) sequences is successfully used to estimate genetic distances between closely related plant taxa, we evaluated the possibility of its application in the study of the phylogeny of the Loliinae subtribe. Accordingly, we cloned and sequenced this region of F. ovina (subgenus Festuca) and F. carpatica (subgenus Leucopoa) genomes and compared them with the 5S rDNA of Lolium perenne and other members of the tribe Poeae. It was found that the genomes of F. ovina and F. carpatica contain only one structural class of 5S rDNA repeats. The level of IGS similarity between the two studied Festuca species ranges from 80.2 to 81.7%, and between these species and L. perenne—from 62.5 to 70.1%. Species of the genera Festuca and Lolium form a highly-supported monophyletic group on the phylodendrogram, which indicates their origin from a common ancestor. The high rate of the IGS evolution allows using of this nuclear genome region in studies on the molecular taxonomy of the subtribe Loliinae. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Ruminant agriculture suffers from inefficient capture of forage protein and consequential release of N pollutants to land. This is due to proteolysis in the rumen catalyzed by both microbial but initially endogenous plant proteases. Plant breeding‐based solutions are sought to minimize these negative environmental impacts. The aim of this study was to perform an integrated study of rumen N metabolism using semi‐continuous rumen simulation fermenters (Rusitec) to explore the extent to which swards containing Festulolium populations (interspecific hybrids between Lolium and Festuca grass species) with decreased rates of endogenous protein degradation conferred advantageous protein utilization in comparison with a National Listed perennial ryegrass. An in vitro experiment was conducted using three Festulolium hybrids (Lolium perenne × Festuca arundinacea var. glaucescens, LpFg; Lolium perenne × Festuca mairei, LpFm; and Lolium multiflorum × Festuca arundinacea var. glaucescens, LmFg) and a Lolium perenne, Lp control. LpFm and LmFg demonstrated significantly lower plant‐mediated proteolysis than the control. Fresh forage was incubated in Rusitec with rumen fluid from four donor cows. Feed disappearance and production of gas, methane, and volatile fatty acids were similar across cultivars. Whereas no differences in microbial protein synthesis were noted across treatments during early fermentation (0–6 hr after feeding), an increased microbial N flow in LpFm (+30%) and LmFg hybrids (+41%) was observed during late fermentation (6–24 hr after feeding), with higher overall microbial N flows (+13.5% and + 20.2%, respectively) compared with the control (Lp). We propose an underpinning mechanism involving the partitioning of amino acid catabolism toward branched‐chain amino acids and microbial protein synthesis in grasses with slow plant‐mediated proteolysis instead of accumulation of rumen ammonia in grasses with fast plant‐mediated proteolysis. These observations indicate the potential of Festulolium hybrids with a slow plant‐mediated proteolysis trait to improve the efficiency of capture of forage protein and decrease the release of N pollutants onto the land.

Heavy traffic regularly causes damage of substantial aboveground parts to turf grasses. Several factors could affect the traffic stress severity, including the number of occasions per season and the soil moisture content during the traffic stress. Mycorrhiza results in numerous advantages to host plant like improving the turfgrass establishment, root structure and also abiotic stress tolerance of plants. Festuca arundinacea remains green during the playing season and it is the most popular turf grass for football. Trinexapacethyl (TE) might be influence the wear as growth retardant. Accordingly, mycorrhiza infection effect on tall fescue establishment, and TE effect on traffic stress after establishment were studied. The treatments, including traffic stress (traffic and non-traffic stress), TE (0 and 200 g 100 m-2) and mycorrhiza (Control; Glomus mosseae and Glomus intraradices) 50 g m-2 were evaluated on two cultivars of tall fescue in two growing season of 2017 and 2018. Both mycorrhizas were significantly colonized on turfgrass root during establishment. G. intraradices inoculation increased the establishment by passing 60 days from seeding in F. arundinacea cv. Barvado. After establishment, traffic stress reduced the relative water content (RWC) in 2017 and 2018, and also reduced the turf quality and soluble sugar content (SSC). TE improved the RWC, SSC, turf quality and also colonization percentage. Mycorrhiza inoculation enhanced tall fescue establishment. TE application at 200 g 100 m-2 had no influence on traffic stress, however, it improved turf quality, RWC, SSC and mycorrhiza colonization.

The genus Festuca (Poaceae) occupies a wide range of lands in both hemispheres, with astounding significance endowed by the genetic diversity, intra/inter-species discriminations, and structure analysis of Fescue species based on a reliable molecular marker. While still in the infancy stage, information on genetic structure and relationships of Festuca species from Turkish gene pool have rarely, or never, been subjected to the most needed studies. Six species of genus Festuca were put in the limelight. A total of 598 loci were generated through molecular characterization of 68 accessions by using 19 inter-simple sequence repeats primers. Molecular variance revealed a variation within species and among species of 75% and 25, respectively. The F. ovina showed high values in relation to the number of different alleles, Shannon's information index, and percentage of polymorphic loci. The highest genetic variability, expected and unbiased expected heterozygosity values were detected for F. arundinacea. Nei genetic distance showed that the lowest value was found between F. ovina and F. valesiaca species, while the highest was identified between F. heterophylla and F. pratensis species. An obvious convergence has been detected through Principal Coordinate Analysis, neighbor-joining dendrogram and Structure output, with accessions divided into number-of-species-based groups. The study resulted in implications for genetic revision, which, in turn, may clear the misty vision that geneticists might have regarding fescue; and could be exploited in future genetic resources conservation and breeding programs. Festuca amethystina L. is an interesting species for the analysis of the impact of the profoundness and areal representativeness of the field botanical research on the knowledge about the geographical range of the rare taxa. In the paper the new data on the occurrence of amethyst fescue was presented. These data complete the pattern of the species occurrence in central Poland. The second aim of the article was the analysis of the history of the localities discoveries in the whole country. The development of knowledge on this subject was very uneven. Historical processes influencing the possibility of botany development, and the number of researchers particularly interested in a given taxonomic group or habitat type, were of great importance. The third aim was the assessment if we can conclude about the real geographical range of the species under study from the current knowledge about its occurrence. The results of modelling with the Maxent algorithm were presented. We evaluate the currently known range as realistic, in accordance with the present state of knowledge there is quite a high probability of new localities discoveries, but rather not far from the limits of the known geographical range in the country. Background: Cultivated grasses are an important source of food for domestic animals worldwide. Increased knowledge of their genomes can speed up the development of new cultivars with better quality and greater resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses. The most widely grown grasses are tetraploid ryegrass species (Lolium) and diploid and hexaploid fescue species (Festuca). In this work, we characterized repetitive DNA sequences and their contribution to genome size in five fescue and two ryegrass species as well as one fescue and two ryegrass cultivars. Results: Partial genome sequences produced by Illumina sequencing technology were used for genome-wide comparative analyses with the RepeatExplorer pipeline. Retrotransposons were the most abundant repeat type in all seven grass species. The Athila element of the Ty3/gypsy family showed the most striking differences in copy number between fescues and ryegrasses. The sequence data enabled the assembly of the long terminal repeat (LTR) element Fesreba, which is highly enriched in centromeric and (peri)centromeric regions in all species. A combination of fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) with a probe specific to the Fesreba element and immunostaining with centromeric histone H3 (CENH3) antibody showed their co-localization and indicated a possible role of Fesreba in centromere function. Conclusions: Comparative repeatome analyses in a set of fescues and ryegrasses provided new insights into their genome organization and divergence, including the assembly of the LTR element Fesreba. A new LTR element Fesreba was identified and found in abundance in centromeric regions of the fescues and ryegrasses. It may play a role in the function of their centromeres. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Epichloë fungal endophytes that systemically colonise cool-season grasses have become an internationally well-researched symbiosis. While sexual species of Epichloë can cause choke disease of grass seed heads, asexual forms are symptomless endophytes that colonise embryos to become seed transmitted. In mutualistic associations, the grass benefits through greater tolerance of abiotic and biotic stresses. In New Zealand, at least 12 species of naturalised and native grasses have been documented as infected with a range of asexual or sexual Epichloë. The impact of endophyte-infected ryegrass and tall fescue has been significant for pastoral farmers, with Epichloë enhancing pasture performance. Production of bioactive secondary metabolites reduces herbivory by invertebrate pests but some are also toxic to grazing animals. Selected strains of Epichloë have been utilised to reduce livestock problems while retaining improved pasture performance. Documented Epichloë-infected native grasses are rare, justifying greater efforts of discovery, description and conservation as taonga (a treasure) for Māori and all New Zealanders. Given their ecological success in New Zealand ecosystems, along with economic and environmental benefits, there are good prospects to further develop both endemic and naturalised Epichloë-grass associations that may benefit other cool-season grasses and potentially deliver new beneficial properties. Both plant species and CO2 concentration can potentially affect rhizodeposition and consequently soil microbial activity and community composition. However, the effect differs based on plant developmental stage. We focused on the effect of three plant species (forbs, grasses, and N2‐fixers) at an early stage of development on root C deposition and fate, soil organic matter (SOM) mineralization and soil microbial community composition at ambient (aCO2) and elevated (eCO2) CO2 levels. Plants were grown from seed, under continuous 13C‐labelling atmospheres (400 and 800 µmol mol−1 CO2), in grassland soil for three weeks. At the end of the growth period, soil respiration, dissolved organic C (DOC) and phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) profiles were quantified and isotopically partitioned into root‐ and soil‐derived components. Root‐derived DOC (0.53 ± 0.34 and 0.26 ± 0.29 µg mL soil solution−1) and soil‐derived CO2 (6.14 ± 0.55 and 5.04 ± 0.44 µg CO2‐C h−1) were on average two times and 22% higher at eCO2 than at aCO2, respectively. Plant species differed in exudate production at aCO2 (0.11 ± 0.11, 0.10 ± 0.18, and 0.58 ± 0.58 µg mL soil solution−1 for Plantago, Festuca, and Lotus, respectively) but not at eCO2 (0.20 ± 0.28, 0.66 ± 0.32, and 0.75 ± 0.15 µg mL soil solution−1 for Plantago, Festuca, and Lotus, respectively). However, no differences among plant species or CO2 levels were apparent when DOC was expressed per gram of roots. Relative abundance of PLFAs did not differ between the two CO2 levels. A higher abundance of actinobacteria and G‐positive bacteria occurred in unplanted (8.07 ± 0.48 and 24.36 ± 1.18 mol%) and Festuca‐affected (7.63 ± 0.31 and 23.62 ± 0.69 mol%) soil than in Plantago‐ (7.04 ± 0.36 and 23.41 ± 1.13 mol%) and Lotus‐affected (7.24 ± 0.17 and 23.13 ± 0.52 mol%) soil. In conclusion, the differences in root exudate production and soil respiration are mainly caused by differences in root biomass at an early stage of development. Festuca arundinacea is a model to work on the mechanisms of drought resistance in grasses. The crucial components of that resistance still remain not fully recognized. It was suggested that deep root system could be a crucial trait for drought avoidance strategy but the other components of root performance under water deficit have not paid much attention of scientists. In this study, two genotypes of F. arundinacea with a different ability to withstand soil water deficit were selected to perform comprehensive research, including analysis of root architecture, phytohormones, proteome, primary metabolome and lipidome under progressive stress conditions, followed by a rewatering period. The experiments were performed in tubes, thus enabling undisturbed development of root systems. We demonstrated that long roots are not sufficient to perfectly avoid drought damage in F. arundinacea and to withstand adverse environmental conditions without a disturbed cellular metabolism (with respect to leaf relative water potential and cellular membrane integrity). Furthermore, we proved that metabolic performance of roots is as crucial as its architecture under water deficit, to cope with drought stress via avoidance, tolerance and regeneration strategies. Habitat loss and degradation are major concerns in the recent reduction of biodiversity. Habitat characteristics around the largest remaining European ground squirrel colonies were evaluated in the western part of Hungary. We supposed that both within and between colonies, ground squirrel densities indicate habitat quality. We found that ground squirrels inhabit grasslands with various soil types of medium hardness, but they reached the highest density in fescue (Festuca spp.) dominated, from moderately to heavily grazed or frequently mowed grasslands. As this strictly protected animal is a key species in the steppe ecosystem, we suggest following specific management measurements, targeting the habitat characteristics preferred by this species, in order to protect the remaining colonies. Festulolium are hybrids between species within the Lolium and Festuca genera. They are attractive candidates for hybridisation due to their complementary characteristics in the context of forage production and environmental challenges, with Lolium exhibiting greater digestibility and Festuca possessing superior resilience to abiotic stress. To establish the extent of the representation of these characteristics in different Festulolium hybrids, a five-year field experiment was undertaken in a mild Atlantic climate. Four alternative species combinations and six pure species (controls) were evaluated for dry matter yield and persistency from 2014 to 2018, and various nutritional parameters in the first silage cut were measured from 2015 to 2017. Festulolium hybrids derived from L. multiflorum were found to group with both Lolium and Festuca pure species for a mean ground score to evaluate persistency (P < 0.05). Hybrid types of the L. perenne lineage were found to have ground score values more alike to their Lolium component and distinct from the F. pratensis pure species. In terms of dry matter yield, the majority of L. multiflorum hybrids observed formed a higher yielding group with the tetraploid L. multiflorum pure species and distinct from diploid F. pratensis pure species, whereas all other hybrid types and controls shared groups in common. For the nutrient content parameters including dry matter digestibility, water soluble sugars, and buffering capacity, Lolium pure species exhibited more favourable values, whereas hybrids were largely found to display intermediate to low values. Festuca pure species consistently exhibited poorer values with the exception of crude protein content where F. pratensis displayed the highest values and also the 2017 measurement of buffering capacity. In conclusion, the Festulolium hybrids shared characteristics with both parental types, but they often showed a greater likeness to the Lolium component. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
