Feijoa sellowiana (O. Berg) is a broadly widespread fruit tree species at a very early stage of domestication. Although appreciated for its flavored berries rich in nutrients and nutraceuticals, and as an ornamental plant, feijoa is still considered an underutilized species and little information is available about its genetic background, cultivar traceability and divergence. This study aimed to investigate, for the first time, the genetic diversity of feijoa through the application of AFLPs. Specifically, twenty cultivars from different countries and six wild types (WTs) from their area of origin (Misiones, Argentina) were analyzed. The AFLPs proved to be informative, revealing the values of the percentage of polymorphic loci (PPB), Nei's genetic diversity (h), and the Shannon index (I) at 69.36%, 0.27, and 0.43, respectively, consistent with the average of long-lived perennial and outcrossing species. However, despite the limited number of WTs examined, the genetic variability (h) was higher (approximately 37%) within the six samples compared to cultivars. The population structure analysis identified three clusters, with WTs forming a separated cluster (III) as expected. Cultivars were divided into two clusters (I and II), with cluster I exhibiting a closer genetic proximity to WTs compared to cluster II. This finding was further confirmed using the UPGMA dendrogram based on Provesti distances. This work raised awareness of the genetic variability among the feijoa's widespread cultivars and demonstrated that the limited genetic breeding programs over the last decades resulted in low diversity among them. Moreover, these results confirm the hypothesis that all varieties are derived from a single narrow ancestral population. It is recognized for its value as a fruit-bearing, ornamental, and medicinal species. Based on distinctive characteristics of fruits, seeds, and leaves, as well as its geographical distribution pattern, two variants of the species are distinguished: the "Brazilian type" and the "Uruguayan type". The objective of this study was to characterize, for the first time, the diversity of 202 individuals from four wild populations in Uruguay, representative of the species' most southern natural distribution. Twenty-three morphological descriptors (leaf, flower, and fruit) and 204 RAPD (Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA) markers were used. The morphological data collected validated the main criteria that distinguish "Uruguayan type" populations from "Brazilian type" populations, such as lower seed weight and fruit size, thin and slightly rough skin, high pulp percentage, and hairy white abaxial leaf surfaces. Analyses of both morphological and molecular data indicated wide diversity and strong population structuring, which is relevant information for designing conservation plans, sustainable utilization, and genetic improvement of the plant genetic resources of this species. Chemical profiling of the different tissues of the feijoa plant has shown that they generate an array of useful bioactive compounds which have health benefits such as significant antioxidant activities. In this study, an in vitro culture system has been developed, which could be explored to extract high-value bioactive compounds from feijoa. Feijoa tissue culture was initiated by the induction of callus from floral buds. Sections of floral buds were plated on MS mediumsupplemented with 2,4-D and BAP at 2.0mg/L and 0.2mg/L concentrations, respectively. Cell suspension cultures of feijoa were established using a liquid MS medium with different concentrations of 2,4-D and BAP and cultured on a rotary shaker. The growth of the cell suspension was evaluated with different parameters such as different carbohydrate sources, concentration of MS media, and inoculum density. When the cell suspensions were treated with different concentrations of MeJA at different time points, phytochemicals UPLC - QTOF MS analysis identified extractables of interest. The main compounds identified were secondary metabolites (flavonoids and flavonoid-glucosides) and plant hormones. These compounds are of interest for their potential use in therapeutics or skin and personal care products. This report investigates essential methodology parameters for establishing cell suspension cultures from feijoa floral buds, which could be used to generate in vitro biomass to produce high-value bioactive compounds. This is the first study reporting the identification of arctigenin from feijoa, a high-value compound whose pharmaceutical properties, including anti-tumour, anti-inflammatory and anti-colitis effects, have been widely reported. The ability of feijoa cell cultures to produce such high-value bioactive compounds is extremely promising for its use in pharmaceuticals, cosmeceuticals and nutraceuticals applications. Chitosan has gained agro-industrial interest due to its potential applications in food preservation. In this work, chitosan applications for exotic fruit coating, using feijoa as a case of study, were evaluated. For this, we synthetized and characterized chitosan from shrimp shells and tested its performance. Chemical formulations for coating preparation using chitosan were proposed and tested. Mechanical properties, porosity, permeability, and fungal and bactericidal characteristics were used to verify the potential application of the film in the protection of fruits. The results indicated that synthetized chitosan has comparable properties to commercial chitosan (deacetylation degree > 82%), and, for the case of feijoa, the chitosan coating achieved significant reduction of microorganisms and fungal growth (0 UFC/mL for sample 3). Further, membrane permeability allowed oxygen exchange suitable for fruit freshness and natural physiological weight loss, thus delaying oxidative degradation and prolonging shelf-life. Chitosan's characteristic of a permeable film proved to be a promising alternative for the protection and extension of the freshness of post-harvest exotic fruits. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Feijoa (Acca sellowiana (O. Berg) Burret syn Feijoa sellowiana Berg) is a monotypic species belonging to the Myrtaceae family. Feijoa is cultivated in different countries, and it is mainly consumed as fresh fruit, due to its attractive nutritional quality, nevertheless, several feijoa-based products have been produced and are available in some niche and local markets. The fruits are not the only edible part of the tree since petals of hermaphrodite showy flowers can also be eaten. Fruits are rich in vitamin C, fiber, potassium, iodine, phosphorus, sugars, and calcium. In addition, a large number of bioactive compounds, with many health-promoting benefits, have been identified. This review is carried out with the aim to provide comprehensive and updated over-view of the state of the art related to the knowledge on feijoa, evaluating the main agronomic, qualitative, and nutraceutical traits of its edible parts. Moreover, the variability in feijoa genetic resources to identify and select promising genotypes useful for breeding programs and the postharvest management of fruit and edible flowers will be discussed. Feijoa (Acca sellowiana) is a native Brazilian fruit with a peculiar flavour, a considerable amount of bioactive compounds and antioxidant activity. Even though this fruit tree is currently cultivated in several countries around the world, in Brazil, the process of domestication is underway, and the selection and breeding of new genotypes that are more productive and with better fruit quality is necessary. The objective of this work was to evaluate phenotypic diversity among and within progeny and to study the correlations among the quality variables of Feijoa fruit, seeking to select individuals with superior characteristics using principal component analysis. The parents who formed the progeny (families) were selected from a participatory breeding programme. We observed that individuals 47 and 93 had a combination of desirable fruit characteristics for selection, and individuals 15, 910, 98 and 410 should be selected for future crossings, as they had a high total fruit mass and soluble solid content or the highest percentage of pulp and rounded fruit shape. Larger fruit, in general, had a lower percentage of pulp. Principal component analysis is a viable tool in the pre-selection of new genotypes and potential progenitors for Feijoa breeding programmes.

During recent surveys of tropical fruit plants in Southern Italy, severe infestations were observed on young vegetation of Feijoa, Acca sellowiana (O. Berg) Burret inflicted by the leaf beetle Macrolenes dentipes (Olivier, 1808) (Coleoptera, Chrysomelidae, Cryptocephalinae) which occurs in the Mediterranean area. Feijoa is a species that belongs to the Myrtaceae family and bears an edible interesting fruit. From 2016 we observed adults of M. dentipes feeding on Acca sellowiana leaves in orchards located in the Calabria and Sicily regions. We identified the phenological stages of Feijoa leaves in 12 trees according to the Biologische Bundesanstalt, Bundessortenamt und Chemische Industrie (BBCH) scale. M. dentipes feeds on young leaves (BBCH scale: principal stage 1, substages 10-17). Its adult life cycle on feijoa trees lasts from early June until the end of flowering in late June (BBCH scale: principal growth 7, substage 65) and when the fruits begin to develop (BBCH scale: principal stage 7, substage 70). El presente trabajo muestra el efecto que produce el jugo de la feijoa en reducir los niveles de glucosa en sangre en ratas wistar. Para ello, se diseñó una fase experimental en el que a este tipo de ratas se les trató con una solución de alto contenido de glucosa. En condiciones control las ratas presentaron niveles de glucosa en sangre de 85 ± 5 mg/dL. Después de consumir la solución glucosada durante 3 semanas su nivel de glucosa en sangre subió a 150 mg/dL. Posteriormente se les dio de tomar el jugo de feijoa por 3 semanas más. Cada semana se monitorearon los niveles de glucosa, al llegar la sexta semana se detectaron niveles similares a las condiciones control, es decir se alcanzaron niveles de 80 mg/dL de glucosa en sangre e inclusive menor, de 65 ± 4 mg/dL. Estos resultados muestran que el consumo diario del jugo de feijoa ayuda a reducir niveles de glucosa en sangre.

The aim of the present study was to determine the behavior of physicochemical characteristics of feijoa fruits of seven genotypes grown in two locations of Santa Catarina. The evaluation was made using the following: (i) 2011/12, 2014/15 and 2015/16 harvests of genotypes 85, 101, 223, 458 and 509, cultivated in Fraiburgo (Papuã community); and (ii) 2014/15 and 2015/16 harvests of genotypes 28.12 and 527, in Água Doce (Vista Alegre community). Diameter (cm), length (cm) and weight (g) of the fruit, peel (g) and pulp (g) weight, peel thickness (mm), and total soluble solids (Brix grade) were evaluated. An analysis of variance, comparisons between means using Tukey’s test (p < 0.05), and Pearson correlation coefficients (p < 0.05) were computed for the variables of feijoa fruits. In Água Doce, genotype 527 had the largest diameter and weight of the fruit (88.7 g). In Fraiburgo, genotype 85 had the highest fruit weight (94.9 g) and genotype 509 had the highest pulp yield (37.5%). Not all genotypes with higher fruit weight exhibited higher pulp yield, confirming that the skin thickness and fruit size variables are directly related to yield. The variation in total soluble solids values was due to the environment and genotype effects.

The article presents the results of research examining varietal diversity with respect the activity of oxidative enzymes (EC 1.11.1.6) and the dry matter and Proline accumulation of leaves under optimal and stressful conditions. For feijoa, the most stressful period in the subtropics of Russia, with respect to hydrothermal conditions, occurs between July and September. Studies have shown that the highest degree of enzymatic activity is observed in August in the ‘Superba’ variety of feijoa, which was used as a control in this study, and the lowest level of activity was observed in the 'Sentjabrskaja' variety. The long-term water deficit experienced in September coincides with fruiting in feijoa. This causes a change in catalase activity in leaves, which is maintained until it is inhibited. Form ShV-1 of feijoa is characterised by its metabolic stability. In fact, the activity of oxidative enzymes in leaves of the variety is stable. Dry matter content per unit area increases as the leaf grows. During the drought period, which coincides with active fruiting, the leaves of the ‘Dachnaja' variety and the ShV-1 form accumulate significantly less dry matter than other varieties. In the ‘Dagomysskaja' variety, the intensity of organic matter consumption via respiration and outflow exceeds visible photosynthesis, which is expressed as a negative value (average = 1.96 g.dm-2 h). To fully characterise the physiological state of feijoa plants under the influence of abiotic factors and catalase activity in the humid subtropics of Russia, indicators of dry matter accumulation and true photosynthesis intensity can be used.

Este artículo explora las posibilidades de la exportación de la fruta feijoa a Europa, específicamente, a Francia. Este documento pretende analizar al consumidor francés, sus hábitos y sus tendencias en el consumo de fruta y sus derivados; las posibles oportunidades que tiene la fruta en su estado natural y en un desarrollo industrial. La investigación cualitativo-documental sugiere avanzar en un estudio de mercado de productos industrializados con aportes nutricionales para mejorar la introducción de productos derivados de la feijoa al mercado europeo. En la investigación se evidencia cómo los consumidores franceses están a favor de los productos innovadores y con beneficios para su salud sin importar su rango de edad. La feijoa puede llegar a ser una fruta de valor agregado por sus componentes nutricionales; su industrialización aportaría beneficios a los agricultores, exportadores y mercado. Lo anterior adicionaría un portafolio novedoso de nutrientes a la dieta del consumidor francés y concibe un crecimiento al sector agrícola no tradicional.

The article presents the data of breeding studies on some subtropical fruit crops (Diospyros kaki L., Feijoa sellowiana Berg) cultivated in the Black Sea coast area of the Russian Federation. The first domestic ‘Khostinsky’ persimmon variety has been obtained, which has high productivity and quality of fruits, and is also resistant to pests and diseases. As a result of interspecific crossbreeding, a promising interspecific hybrid No. 99 (Omarov’s ISH) has been obtained (Djiro ’x common persimmon), which is highly frost-resistant can withstand temperature drops to minus 230. Creation of such hybrids will expand the distribution area of the culture in more northern regions. The amount of sugars in fruits reaches 25% compared with 14-19 % in the control. As a result of multi-year research on feijoa plants cultivated in the humid subtropics of the Russian Federation, many promising forms have been identified among seed populations, three of them («Dagomysskaya», «Dachnaya», «Sentyabrskaya») were cultivated and included in the State Register of protected breeding achievements (plant varieties) of the RF in 2016. Selection of high-yield and especially early ripe forms of feijoa with their further vegetative propagation will increase significantly the area under the culture in the Russian Federation, and will increase the yield of plantations and improve the quality of fruits.

Feijoa is often found in central and north Florida landscapes as a durable and cold-hardy plant for hedges and foundation plantings, and as a dooryard fruit. Its value as a potentially heavy producer of flavorful fruits (and flavorful flowers) is frequently overlooked due to issues in pollination and limited genetic improvement. The years of studying feijoa plants cultivated in the humid subtropics of the Krasnodar Territory have shown the necessity for selection of forms from seed populations with different maturity of fruits, high yields and high fruit quality. Seven promising forms have been evaluated primarily. After observation the growth dynamics of shoots B-13 for has been selected with an active growth. The average shoots length has reached 22,8 cm by the end of the growing season. Assessment of fruit cast have shown that the largest percentage of active ovaries is found in B-13 form and “Dagomysskaya” variety and (17%).Assessment of harvesting period has revealed early ripening forms (II-III decade of September – I decade of October), they include 4-10, 12-5, 13-11, IIIB-1 forms; mid-ripening forms (II-III decade of October – I decade of November) are 10-22, B-13 and late-ripening forms are 6-24, the fruits of which ripen from the 3rd decade of November till the 1st decade of December. Form B-13 has been selected as a high-yielding one: 19,2 kg / bush, and a large-fruited one – average fruits weigh 96,0 g. The forms of 4-10, B-13 have been selected according to sugar content, with 9,70 % and 8,12 % of sugar respectively. The forms of 6-24, 12-5 and B-13 are observed to contain more monosaccharides than sucrose. Two forms of 4-10 and B-13 have been selected as the best in taste with the highest percentage of monosaccharides, in particular, fructose, which gives the fruits the “sweet taste”.The fruits of form 12-5 are characterized by a highest content of vitamin “C” –75,68 mg%. Forms of 4-10 and 12-5 have the highest sugar-acid ratio which is 5,5 and 5,0, respectively, and the lowest ratio is observed in forms of 6-24 and 10-22 – 2,9 and 3,0, respectively.

What products mainly provide for the need of the human body in iodine in Russia and other (near and far) countries of the world? For example, is there such a substance as an optimal thyroid diet and how can it be achieved both by healthy people and patients with thyroid disorders? Unlike North America, Australia and New Zealand, the Scandinavian and some other European countries, dairy products are not the main sources of iodine in the diet of the Russian population. There are not so many of these sources, let alone their availability and price. Even the high iodine content in feijoa is proven fake. And what will happen to our thyroid diet, when, finally, Russia will adopt a law on mandatory salt iodization? If everything goes as planned, in a few years, bakery products will become the main source of iodine in our diet, and the daily intake of iodine due to the use of iodized salt in baking will increase by an average of 80100 mcg per day. Then the dream of an optimal thyroid diet will come true even without expensive seafood and amazing feijoa.

A goiabeira serrana consta entre as espécies frutíferas nativas do Sul do Brasil, ainda não exploradas comercialmente, como sendo uma das mais promissoras. Sua exploração comercial depende, entre outras condições, da disponibilidade de cultivares que possam atender ao mercado em termos de oferta de frutos de qualidade a preços condizentes. As cultivares ora lançadas, SCS 411 Alcântara e SCS 412 Helena, são as primeiras a ser disponibilizadas para o cultivo da goiabeira serrana no Brasil e resultam de um trabalho de melhoramento genético e seleção iniciado há 20 anos pela Epagri. Além de qualidade e produtividade, estas duas cultivares autocompatíveis se completam, proporcionando um escalonamento da colheita, desde o início de março com ‘Alcântara’ até o final de abril com ‘Helena’.

Acca sellowiana, known as feijoa or pineapple guava, is a diploid, (2n = 2x = 22) outcrossing fruit tree species native to Uruguay and Brazil. The species stands out for its highly aromatic fruits, with nutraceutical and therapeutic value. Despite its promising agronomical value, genetic studies on this species are limited. Linkage genetic maps are valuable tools for genetic and genomic studies, and constitute essential tools in breeding programs to support the development of molecular breeding strategies. A high-density composite genetic linkage map of A. sellowiana was constructed using two genetically connected populations: H5 (TCO × BR, N = 160) and H6 (TCO × DP, N = 184). Genotyping by sequencing (GBS) approach was successfully applied for developing single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers. A total of 4,921 SNP markers were identified using the reference genome of the closely related species Eucalyptus grandis, whereas other 4,656 SNPs were discovered using a de novo pipeline. The individual H5 and H6 maps comprised 1,236 and 1,302 markers distributed over the expected 11 linkage groups, respectively. These two maps spanned a map length of 1,593 and 1,572 cM, with an average inter-marker distance of 1.29 and 1.21 cM, respectively. A large proportion of markers were common to both maps and showed a high degree of collinearity. The composite map consisted of 1,897 SNPs markers with a total map length of 1,314 cM and an average inter-marker distance of 0.69. A novel approach for the construction of composite maps where the meiosis information of individuals of two connected populations is captured in a single estimator is described. A high-density, accurate composite map based on a consensus ordering of markers provides a valuable contribution for future genetic research and breeding efforts in A. sellowiana. A novel mapping approach based on an estimation of multipopulation recombination fraction described here may be applied in the construction of dense composite genetic maps for any other outcrossing diploid species.

Dando continuidade ao seu programa de melhoramento da goiabeira serrana (Acca selowiana), uma das fruteiras nativas mais promissoras do Sul do Brasil em termos comerciais, a Epagri está lançando duas novas cultivares, SCS 414-Mattos e SCS 415-Nonante, que têm por objetivo estender e melhorar o fluxo de oferta de goiabas serranas ao mercado. O pico de colheita da cultivar Mattos encaixa-se entre o da ‘Alcântara’ e da ‘Helena’, lançadas em 2007, enquanto ‘Nonante’ começa a amadurecer cerca de 20 dias após o início da colheita da ‘Helena’, estendendo o período de colheita da goiaba serrana até a segunda semana de maio. A cultivar Mattos resulta da seleção e propagação vegetativa de um dos 200 acessos silvestres do banco de germoplasma e destacou-se pelo tamanho, aparência e qualidade do fruto, enquanto ‘Nonante’ resulta de um cruzamento entre dois acessos coletados em quintais de Santa Catarina, e se destacou pela constância de produção, rusticidade e sabor de seus frutos, além de ser autocompatível.

Acca sellowiana , known as feijoa or pineapple guava, is a diploid, (2 n = 2 x = 22) outcrossing fruit tree species native to Uruguay and Brazil. The species stands out for its highly aromatic fruits, with nutraceutical and therapeutic value. Despite its promising agronomical value, genetic studies on this species are limited. Linkage genetic maps are valuable tools for genetic and genomic studies, and constitute essential tools in breeding programs to support the development of molecular breeding strategies. A high-density composite genetic linkage map of A. sellowiana was constructed using two genetically connected populations: H5 (TCO × BR, N = 160) and H6 (TCO × DP, N = 184). Genotyping by sequencing (GBS) approach was successfully applied for developing single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers. A total of 4,921 SNP markers were identified using the reference genome of the closely related species Eucalyptus grandis , whereas other 4,656 SNPs were discovered using a de novo pipeline. The individual H5 and H6 maps comprised 1,236 and 1,302 markers distributed over the expected 11 linkage groups, respectively. These two maps spanned a map length of 1,593 and 1,572 cM, with an average inter-marker distance of 1.29 and 1.21 cM, respectively. A large proportion of markers were common to both maps and showed a high degree of collinearity. The composite map consisted of 1,897 SNPs markers with a total map length of 1,314 cM and an average inter-marker distance of 0.69. Background and Objective: Curative properties of Feijoa sellowiana Bert. (Myrtaceae, Acca sellowiana), have been often claimed, while investigations into details of its bioactivities are still lacking. This study investigated the effect of acetonic extract of Feijoa (Acca sellowiana (O. Berg) Burret) fruit on proliferation and apoptosis of bone marrow derived stem cells. Methodology: Human bone marrow stem cells (hBMSCs) were characterized before experiments. MTT Assay was performed to determine the toxicity of Feijoa. The growth kinetics was also investigated until 7 days. Real time PCR assessed the expression of apoptosis genes. Results: In MTT assay, Feijoa at doses ≤ 5 ng/ml did not show any cytotoxic effect on hBMSCs and increased the cell proliferation until day 4th followed by a decrease until day 7th. Population doubling time (PDT) decreased until day 4th followed by an increase until day 7th. A significant increase in expression of Bax and decrease Bcl-2 expression were recorded on day 7th. Conclusion: The antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and modulatory activities of Feijoa can explain the increasing effect on cell proliferation till day 4th, but the apoptotic activity of Feijoa noted after four days is reported for the first time denoting to the short term antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and modulatory properties of Feijoa that should be considered for curative activity of this fruit. Introduction: One of the most common complications of diabetes is the disorder in healing diabetic wounds. Feijoa Fruit has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects in repairing acute skin wounds. The present study was performed to investigate the effect of alcoholic extract of Feijoa Fruit on wound healing in diabetic male rats. Methods and Materials: This experimental study was carried out in 45 male rats. Thirty rats were randomly divided into two groups (n=15), 30 days after induction of diabetes, and the rest were considered non-diabetic. The groups included normal wounds, diabetic wounds, and diabetic wound groups treated with 5% Feijoa Fruit extract. Sampling was performed on days 7, 14, and 21 after wounding. Assessments included wound closure rate, histological (collagen density) and stereological (tissue volume and number of cells) examinations, expression of genes involved in repair, regeneration, and angiogenesis (TGF-β, bFGF, VEGF), and inflammatory genes (TNF-α and IL-1β) using qRT-PCR. Results: Wound closure rate, new epidermis and dermis volume, total fibroblast cells, and collagen deposition significantly increased in the treated group compared with the diabetic control group. The gene expression was significantly higher in the treatment group than in the diabetic control group. Findings showed a significant decrease in the expression of inflammatory genes and the number of mast cells in the treatment group compared with the diabetic control group. Conclusion: The 5% extract of Feijoa Fruit, with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, showed greater effects on the healing process of diabetic and chronic wounds. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introducción: El fruto de la feijoa ha cobrado relevancia internacional debido a sus altas propiedades nutraceúticas. En contraste con Nueva Zelanda, Colombia o Turquía, en México, su cultivo es incipiente y hasta el momento se produce solamente en los estados de México, Michoacán, Puebla y Veracruz. Un problema que existe en México para la venta de este fruto es su baja comercialización. Así, estudiar las variables que influyen en el proceso de decisión de compra es relevante. El objetivo del presente estudio fue caracterizar algunos atributos sensoriales del nuevo consumidor de feijoa fresca, así como el grado de afectividad que tienen por esta fruta. Método: Las características sensoriales de la feijoa (Acca sellowiana), carambola (Averrhoa carambola), kiwi (Actinidia chinensis) y guayaba (Psidium guajava) fueron analizadas. Con el perfil sensorial de estos frutos, se realizó un análisis descriptivo cuantitativo (ADC), y posteriormente se llevó a cabo una prueba de aceptabilidad que determinó la afectividad de los consumidores sobre determinados atributos sensoriales del fruto. También, se realizó una prueba de preferencia afectiva por pares entre la feijoa y la guayaba. Resultados y discusión: los atributos sensoriales que caracterizaron a la feijoa fueron su aroma dulce, intensidad de aroma y sabor residual frutal; la carambola sobresalió en jugosidad; la guayaba en intensidad de aroma y acidez; y el kiwi en acidez y homogeneidad. De las cuatro frutas comparadas, la feijoa presentó los valores más altos en acidez, aroma dulce, intensidad de aroma, homogeneidad, dureza y sabor residual frutal. En cuanto a aceptabilidad global, la guayaba, el kiwi y la feijoa fueron las más gustadas por los consumidores. Conclusión: La feijoa mostró superioridad en la mayoría de los atributos sensoriales. El aroma dulce y la intensidad del aroma favorecieron su aceptación con respecto al kiwi, carambola y guayaba. En contraste, su jugosidad, pegajosidad, y acidez tuvieron valores que afectaron negativamente su aceptabilidad. La guayaba fue aceptada mientras tenga menor acidez. El kiwi tuvo atributos como pegajosidad y bajo sabor residual frutal aceptados favorablemente. La carambola tuvo la menor aceptación debido a la alta acidez, sin embargo, tuvo atributos como homogeneidad y jugosidad que gustaron a los consumidores.

A feijoa é uma espécie de ocorrência espontânea na região Sul do Brasil e no Uruguai, pertencente à família Myrtaceae. Apesar de sua adaptação e potencial produtivo, ainda é pouco cultivada comercialmente, diferente do que ocorre em outros países onde a espécie foi introduzida e já vem sendo amplamente cultivada. Com vistas a propiciar o cultivo no Brasil, quatro cultivares comerciais foram lançadas pela Epagri em parceria com a Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o desenvolvimento vegetativo, fenológico e produtivo dos cultivares ao longo de três safras. Observou-se que não existe diferença de desenvolvimento vegetativo entre eles, em termos de diâmetro de tronco e altura de planta. Quanto ao grau de produção, pelo menos em duas safras avaliadas, os cvs Alcântara e Helena foram superiores às demais e não diferiram entre si.

El presente trabajo muestra el efecto que produce el jugo de la feijoa en reducir los niveles de glucosa en sangre en ratas wistar. Para ello, se diseñó una fase experimental en el que a este tipo de ratas se les trató con una solución de alto contenido de glucosa. En condiciones control las ratas presentaron niveles de glucosa en sangre de 85 ± 5 mg/dL. Después de consumir la solución glucosada durante 3 semanas su nivel de glucosa en sangre subió a 150 mg/dL. Posteriormente se les dio de tomar el jugo de feijoa por 3 semanas más. Cada semana se monitorearon los niveles de glucosa, al llegar la sexta semana se detectaron niveles similares a las condiciones control, es decir se alcanzaron niveles de 80 mg/dL de glucosa en sangre e inclusive menor, de 65 ± 4 mg/dL. Estos resultados muestran que el consumo diario del jugo de feijoa ayuda a reducir niveles de glucosa en sangre.

The quality of pineapple guava fruits during post-harvest storage depends directly on their quality at harvest and is influenced by climatic conditions during growth. The aim of this study was to determine the influence of climatic conditions on certain parameters of fruit quality during post-harvest storage. Twenty trees were tagged in two locations within the department of Cundinamarca (Colombia), recording the climatic conditions during fruit growth until harvest. The fruits were differentiated by place of origin and stored at 18 ± 1ºC (76 ± 5% relative humidity, RH) for 11 d or 5 ± 1ºC (87 ± 5% RH) for 31 d, evaluating several quality attributes every two d. The places of origin were San Francisco de Sales (1,800 m a.s.l., 20.6oC, 63-97% RH, with an average annual precipitation of 1,493 mm) and Tenjo (2,580 m a.s.l., 12.5oC, 74-86% RH, with an average annual precipitation of 765 mm). The results indicated that the fruits stored at the highest temperature were sweeter and had reduced weight and firmness, lower acidity, and faster postharvest senescence (lower post-harvest durability). The postharvestN fruit characteristics were determined by considering the fruit quality during growth and the influence of climatic conditions during cultivation in each location. At the higher altitudes, the total soluble solid content in the fruits was higher and firmness decreased, and the total titratable acidity and weight loss were lower. For fruit color, significant differences were not observed that would demonstrate the effect of climatic conditions during the post-harvest period.

Introduction: The fruit of feijoa has gained international relevance due to its high nutraceutical properties. In contrast with New Zealand, Colombia, or Turkey, in Mexico, the cultivation of feijoa is incipient and in-home gardens. It occurs in the states of Mexico, Michoacán, Puebla, and Veracruz. The main problem that exists in Mexico for selling this fruit is a limited commercialization. Thus, studying the variables that influence the purchase decision process is relevant. The objective of the present study was to characterize sensory attributes that the consumer perceives in the fresh feijoa, as well as the degree of affection for this fruit. Method: The sensory characteristics of feijoa (Acca sellowiana) were analyzed and compared with those of the star fruit (Averrhoa carambola), kiwifruit (Actinidia deliciosa) and guava (Psidum guava). With the sensory profile of the four different fruits, a quantitative descriptive analysis (QDA) was performed, and an acceptability test was carried out to determine the affectivity that consumers have on certain attributes of the fruit. A peer preference test was also carried out, where only feijoa and guava were used to see if consumers had greater affection for any of them. Results and discussion: The sensory attributes that characterized the feijoa were the sweet aroma, intensity of aroma and residual fruit flavor. The star fruit excels in juiciness; the guava in intensity of aroma and acidity; and the kiwifruit in acidity and homogeneity. The Feijoa had the highest values in acidity, sweet aroma, intensity of aroma, homogeneity, hardness and residual fruit flavor. In terms of global acceptability, guava, kiwi, and feijoa were the most liked by the consumers. Conclusion: The feijoa showed superiority in most attributes. Its sweet aroma and the intensity of the aroma favored the preference with respect to the kiwi, star fruit and guava. In contrast, the feijoa juiciness, stickiness, and acidity had values that negatively affected its acceptability. The guava was accepted as long as it had less acidity. The kiwifruit had attributes such as stickiness and low residual fruit taste favorably accepted. The article presents the results of research examining varietal diversity with respect the activity of oxidative enzymes (EC 1.11.1.6) and the dry matter and Proline accumulation of leaves under optimal and stressful conditions. For feijoa, the most stressful period in the subtropics of Russia, with respect to hydrothermal conditions, occurs between July and September. Studies have shown that the highest degree of enzymatic activity is observed in August in the 'Superba' variety of feijoa, which was used as a control in this study, and the lowest level of activity was observed in the 'Sentjabrskaja' variety. The long-term water deficit experienced in September coincides with fruiting in feijoa. This causes a change in catalase activity in leaves, which is maintained until it is inhibited. Form ShV-1 of feijoa is characterised by its metabolic stability. In fact, the activity of oxidative enzymes in leaves of the variety is stable. Dry matter content per unit area increases as the leaf grows. During the drought period, which coincides with active fruiting, the leaves of the 'Dachnaja' variety and the ShV-1 form accumulate significantly less dry matter than other varieties. In the 'Dagomysskaja' variety, the intensity of organic matter consumption via respiration and outflow exceeds visible photosynthesis, which is expressed as a negative value (average = 1.96 g.dm-2 h). To fully characterise the physiological state of feijoa plants under the influence of abiotic factors and catalase activity in the humid subtropics of Russia, indicators of dry matter accumulation and true photosynthesis intensity can be used. The fruits belonging to the family Myrtaceae are known sources of compounds with functional characteristics. Nevertheless, the studies are focused only on some species of this family. In this sense, we aimed to quantify the bioactive compounds present in the pulps of cambuci, feijoa, uvaia and grumixama; to evaluate the in vitro antioxidant capacity of each one and to correlate the contribution of these bioactive compounds with the antioxidant activity of each fruit pulp. For this, the compounds ascorbic acid, phenolic compounds, carotenoids, and flavonoids were quantified for the pulps of cambuci, feijoa, uvaia, and grumixama, as well as the in vitro antioxidant capacity by the methods DPPH and ABTS. The results were evaluated by multivariate statistical techniques. The pulps present good antioxidant potential, the one from cambuci presented the highest values for antioxidant activity given by the method DPPH (61.86 μg of Trolox g-1), that from uvaia was prominent by the presence of ascorbic acid (85.40 ascorbic acid 100 g-1) and that from feijoa, by the flavonoid contents (62.45 mg quercetin g-1) and phenolic compounds (10.21 mg gallic acid equivalent g–1). A correlation was observed between pulp antioxidant capacity and the contents of ascorbic acid and carotenoids; on the other hand, the phenolic compounds and flavonoids little contributed for the anti-free radical activity of the methods DPPH and ABTS. A goiabeira-serrana [Acca sellowiana (O. Berg.) Burret] é uma espécie nativa do Sul do Brasil e do Nordeste do Uruguai. O conhecimento da área foliar é importante para o manejo das plantas, em estudos de fisiologia e para a estimativa de danos fitossanitários. Os modelos matemáticos utilizados para a estimativa da área foliar da goiabeira-serrana não consideram as diferenças entre os formatos das folhas de cada cultivar. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar, ajustar e validar modelos matemáticos para a estimativa da área foliar de quatro cultivares brasileiras de goiabeira-serrana. Foram realizadas duas coletas de folhas, a primeira para o estabelecimento dos modelos matemáticos e a segunda para a validação e estimativa da área foliar. As folhas das cultivares SCS411 – ‘Alcântara’, SCS412 – ‘Helena’, SCS414 – ‘Mattos’ e SCS415 – ‘Nonante’ foram coletadas do Banco Ativo de Germoplasma (BAG) da Epagri, em São Joaquim/SC, Brasil. Foram mensurados: a área foliar (AF), o comprimento (C), a largura (L) e o índice de forma das folhas, sendo os dados analisados com o uso dos modelos de regressão linear e quadrático. A estimativa da área foliar a partir das equações propostas apresenta elevada precisão e simplicidade de execução. A equação y=0,7345x+0,0298, onde x refere-se ao produto do comprimento pela largura da folha (L*C), apresentou os melhores resultados de ajustes nos modelos testados.

The structure characteristics, functional properties, antioxidant and hypoglycemic activities of pectins extracted from feijoa peel with water (FP-W), acid (FP-A) and alkali (FP-B) were investigated. Results showed that the feijoa peel pectins (FPs) were mainly composed of galacturonic acid, arabinose, galactose and rhamnose. FP-W and FP-A had higher proportion of homogalacturonan domain, degree of esterification and molecular weight (for main component) than FP-B; FP-B owned the highest yield, protein and polyphenol contents. FP-W had a compact and smooth surface morphology unlike FP-A and FP-B. FP-W and FP-A had better thermal stability than FP-B. The rheological analysis suggested that the FPs exhibited pseudoplastic fluid behavior, and the elastic characteristics were dominant. Results showed that FP-W and FP-B had superior antioxidant and hypoglycemic activities than FP-A. Abstract This work aimed to obtain feijoa peel extracts by means of high-pressure and sustainable techniques, such as the Pressurized Liquid Extraction (PLE) and the Supercritical Fluid Extraction (SFE). These extraction techniques were compared with low-pressure techniques in terms of global yield, total phenolic content (TPC), antioxidant and antibacterial activities. PLE presented the most remarkable results of global yield, TPC and antioxidant activities. On the other hand, the SFE extract (300 bar, 55 °C and 5% ethanol) was the only one to have presented both bacteriostatic and bactericidal effects against typical foodborne pathogens, at 6750 and 13500 μg·mL−1, respectively. Finally, ferulic, gallic and ellagic acids were identified by Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-ESI-MS/MS) as the major phenolic compounds found in feijoa peel extracts. The impact of feijoa convective drying on the physicochemical characteristics, polyphenol content, antioxidant capacity, and anti-inflammatory activity, as well as the drying parameters (energy consumption and drying rate), were tested. Feijoa fruit slices were dried at 50, 60, and 70 °C, at air velocities of 0.5 and 1 m/s, and at thicknesses of 0.003 m and 0.005 m. The aqueous extracts were used for the determination of bioactivity. Anti-inflammatory activity was determined from the ability of the extracts to counteract and enhance the expression of pro- and anti-inflammatory genes in human THP-1 cells. The best operational drying parameters were found by means of response surface methodology and desirability function. High temperatures, high air velocities and thinner slices obtained the best results for colour, water activity, antioxidant capacity, anti-inflammatory activity and drying rate. Low temperatures, high air velocities, and thinner slices were suitable for the retention of polyphenols, vitamin C, and antioxidant capacity. The optimal conditions were 50.83 °C, 1 m/s air velocity, and 0.003 m thickness. The results indicate that convective drying is a suitable and cost-effective technique to generate functional ingredients while conserving biocompounds and biological activities. • RSM is used to study drying impact on quality and bioactivity properties. • Dried feijoa extracts retain biocomponents, useful in food and pharma. • Convective drying allowed a polyphenols retention of 90%. • Dried feijoa showed antioxidant capacity and anti-inflammatory activity. • Low temperatures improved bioactivity retention. RESUMO Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar a viabilidade e o vigor das sementes de dois genótipos de Acca sellowiana sob diferentes condições e tempos de armazenamento. As sementes foram obtidas a partir de duas plantas (G1 e G2) localizadas em quintais da área urbana de Vacaria-RS. O experimento foi realizado em esquema trifatorial (2 x 3 x 2), sendo duas condições de armazenamento (temperatura ambiente: 20-25ºC; e refrigerado: 4-8ºC), três períodos de armazenamento (zero, um e dois anos), e dois genótipos (G1 e G2), conduzidos em blocos casualizados, com quatro repetições de 50 sementes. As sementes foram postas para germinar sobre papel absorvente umedecido em caixas tipo “gerbox”, mantidas em câmara de crescimento com temperatura de 25 ± 2 °C e fotoperíodo de 16 h. Avaliaram-se o índice de velocidade de germinação, a porcentagem de germinação e o tempo médio de germinação, por meio da contagem de sementes germinadas a cada dois dias, por 44 dias após o início da germinação. Os genótipos apresentaram desempenhos significativamente diferentes na taxa germinativa e no vigor das sementes. Quando armazenadas em temperatura ambiente, as sementes perderam o poder germinativo drasticamente no primeiro ano e completamente no segundo ano. Conclui-se que é possível manter 80% de poder germinativo das sementes de Acca sellowiana por dois anos em armazenamento refrigerado (4 a 8 ºC).

Background: Current chemical treatments for toxoplasmosis have side effects, researchers are looking for herbal remedies with minimal side effects and the best effectiveness. This study aimed to evaluate the anti-toxoplasmic effects of silver nanoparticles based on Sambucus ebulus (Ag-NPs-S. ebulus) and Feijoa sellowiana (Ag-NPs-F. sellowiana) fruit extracts, in vitro and in vivo., Methods: Vero cells were treated with different concentrations (0.5, 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 40 μg/mL) of extracts and pyrimethamine as a positive control. Vero cells were infected with T. gondii and treated with extracts. The infection index and intracellular proliferation of T. gondii were evaluated. The survival rate of infected mice with tachyzoites of T. gondii was examined after intraperitoneal injection of the extracts at a dose of 40 mg/kg/day for 5 days after infection., Results: The Ag-NPs-S. ebulus and Ag-NPs-F. sellowiana, almost similar to pyrimethamine, reduced proliferation index when compared to untreated group. Also, high toxoplasmicidal activity was observed with Ag-NPs-S. ebulus extract. Mice in the treatment groups of Ag-NPs-S. ebulus and pyrimethamine achieved better results in terms of survival than the others., Conclusion: The results indicated that Ag-NPs-F. sellowiana and S. ebulus have a significant growth effect on T. gondii in vitro and in vivo. Ag-NPs-S. ebulus extract has a more lethal effect on the parasite than Ag-NPs-F. sellowiana. We offer a proposal to develop participatory breeding strategies forfeijoa(Acca sellowiana) for southern Brazil based on the results of breeding research with this native fruit. Our experiences provide an opportunity to develop a participatory research program focused on the use and conservation ofA. sellowianaor other fruit tree species. Based on these experiences, we suggest formation of a multidisciplinary research group to implement participatory research to make best use of technical and local knowledge for the conservation and use ofA. sellowiana. Considering the past surveys and interactions with farmers, a number of practical actions will be needed for such a program to succeed, including the creation of organizational and communication structures to improve farmer–farmer engagement, coordination among farmers and researchers on genetic selection criteria and evaluation standards, and mechanisms to specify participant rights and responsibilities and to provide for program continuity.
