Search

The Diptera fauna of the Galápagos Archipelago is updated and an annotated checklist is presented. Currently 50 families, 207 genera, and a minimum of 324 species are recorded from the islands. Approximately 107 species are considered to have arrived on the Galápagos Islands through human introductions, an estimated 101 species are considered endemic, 42 species have naturally colonized the islands from mainland Americas, 21 species are either introduced or arrived naturally and 53 species remain unidentified. The following new combination is proposed: Chrysanthrax primitivus (Walker) is moved to Hemipenthes Loew as H. primitivus (Walker) comb. nov. All references to the Galápagos taxonomic literature are included, known island species distributions listed and general remarks on the biology of many species are provided.

Fannia Robineau-Desvoidy is found in all biogeographic regions. The genus contains approximately 360 known species, 18 of which have been recorded from Mexico. Herein, we describe six new species in the Fannia pretiosa-group, redescribe Fannia gilvitarsis Chillcott, and provide diagnosis, habitus images, drawings of the male terminalia, and an identification key for all species of the group that occur in Mexico. All Fannia pretiosa-group species from Mexico share a similar morphology of the mid tibia, hind femur, and male terminalia.

Fannia canicularis is of temperate climates, and it is likely that if it was introduced in the Neotropics from the ships of early explorers, it would not become established. Fannia gilvitarsis Chillcott, 1961 (Figs 1H, 3F, 4F, 5F, 6F, 11, 16) Diagnosis. Fore tarsi white-yellowish, except for tarsomere 5, with apical half brown and basal half white (Fig. 11D). Mid basitarsus swollen ventrally at middle (Fig. 1H). Hind coxa bare posteriorly. Hind femur slightly curved with pre-apical swelling on v surface, with a pv tuft with five long setae (twice longer than width of femur) on the swelling (Fig. 11F). Wing slightly brownish (Fig. 11B). Redescription. Male. Body length: 6.8 mm. Wing length: 7.1 mm. Head. Eye short and sparsely setulose. Ocellar triangle black; ocellar setae proclinate and developed (as long as frontal setae). Frontal vitta velvety brownish-red to black with silver pruinosity, at the narrowest point four times wider than width of anterior ocellus (Fig. 11A). Frontal setae 15. Fronto-orbital plate black-reddish with silver pruinosity. Parafacial bare, brownish-red with silver pruinosity. Frontogenal suture and gena silver pruinose. Gena brownish-red to black (Fig. 11A). Pedicel with dorsal seta developed, with about a third length of arista. Postpedicel black, golden pilose. Thorax. Scutum without vittae, with inconspicuous silver pruinose on postpronotal and notopleural regions (Fig. 11B). Acrostichal setulae triserial presuturally and triserial to quadriserial postsuturally. Dorsocentrals 2+3, long, the posterior-most postsutural pair slightly longer than the others. Prealar 2, short (about a third of posterior notopleural length), the posterior one thinner, both similar in length. Katepisternum with about 10 long and thick setae ventrally (Fig. 11C). Wing. Slightly brownish (Fig. 11B, 11C). Calypters white. Haltere brown with stem and base yellow. Legs. Black, pulvilli brownish and tarsi brown, except for the fore tarsomeres 1–5 which are white-yellowish. Fore tarsomeres 1 and 2 slightly enlarged laterally. Fore tarsomere 5 with a pair of long setulae dorsally (as long as tarsomere 5 width) (Fig. 11D). Mid femur with 1 row of ad setae; with 1 row of decreasing av from base to apex; 2 rows of long pv, thicker apically, a tuft of short v setae on preapical third (Fig. 11E). Mid tibia with 1 submedian ad, 1 median pd, 1 strong and long preapical d, 1 apical seta on a, pd, p, pv, and v (v longer, similar to d preapical seta) (Fig. 11E). Mid basitarsus slightly enlarged ventrally (Fig. 1H). Hind coxa bare on posterior margin. Hind femur curved with pre-apical swelling on v surface, with a tuft of long setae on the pv surface which continuous in a row decreasing in length basally, 1 row of ad to d setae, pd to pv rows of setae from the femur base to the pre-apical swelling, 1 long preapical av setae, 1 short preapical ad and pd (Fig. 11F). Hind tibia with 2 submedian av setae; 1 apical av (Fig. 11F). Abdomen. Metallic black-bluish with silver pruinosity, elongate, with developed setae, tergite 5 with long marginal setae (about twice longer than others). Black pruinosity forming a central narrow longitudinal stripe dorsally. Syntergosternite with 3 long lateral setae, not longer than sternite 5. Sternite 5 quadrangular, posterior margin profoundly indented (Fig. 3F). Terminalia. Surstyli fused with epandrium. Surstyli slightly curved apically (Figs 4F, 5F). Fannia bisetata sp. nov. (Figs 3E, 4E, 5E, 6E, 10, 16) Diagnosis. Fore tarsi brown (Fig. 10D). Hind coxa with two long setulae posteriorly. Hind femur curved with preapical swelling on v surface, with an av tuft with 3 long setae and a pv tuft with 5 long setae (three times longer than the femur width) on the swelling (Fig. 10F). Wing brownish. Description. Holotype male. Body length: 5.2 mm. Wing length: 5.2 mm. Head. Eye densely setulose. Ocellar triangle black; ocellar setae proclinate and developed (as long as frontal setae). Frontal vitta black, with silver pruinosity and an inconspicuous golden pruinosity forming a central stripe, at the narrowest point twice wider than width of anterior ocellus (Fig. 10A). 19 frontal setae. Fannia grisalesae sp. nov. (Figs 1G, 3G, 4G, 5G, 6G, 12, 16) Diagnosis. Fore tarsomere 2–4 white-yellowish, tarsomere 1 with basal half brown and apical half white-yellowish, tarsomere 5 brown (Fig. 12D). Mid basitarsus with basal fourth enlarged and covered with four long and thick curved setae (Fig. 1G). Hind coxa bare. Hind femur curved with pre-apical swelling on v surface, with tuft of five long pv setae (three times longer than width of femur) on the swelling, curved apically (Fig. 12F). Wing slightly brownish (Fig. 12C). Description. Male. Body length: 6.0 mm. Wing length: 5.5 mm. Head. Eye short and sparsely setulose. Ocellar triangle dark brown; ocellar setae proclinate and developed (as long as frontal setae). Tarsomeres 1–5 with apical to preapical setulae thicker than the others (Fig. 12D). Mid femur with 1 row of ad to d setae, with 1 row of decreasing av from base to apex; 1 row of long p and pv setae (thicker on the apical third) (Fig. 12E). Mid tibia with 1 submedian ad, 1 median pd, 1 strong and long preapical d, 1 apical seta on a, ad, p, pv, and v (v longer and thicker) (Fig. 12E). Fannia abdominiseta sp. nov. (Figs 2, 3A, 4A, 5A, 6A, 16) Diagnosis. Fore tarsomere 1–4 white-yellowish, tarsomere 5 brown (Fig. 2D). Mid basitarsus enlarged ventrally. Hind coxa bare. Hind femur slightly curved with pre-apical swelling on v surface, with a tuft of five long pv setae (twice longer than width of femur) on the swelling, becoming shorter towards base, and connected to a row of pv setae reaching the base of the femur (Fig. 2F). Wing hyaline (Fig. 2C). Syntergosternite with 5 long lateral setae (the two most dorsal are curved and twice longer than sternite 5) (Fig. 2C). Description. Male. Body length: 6.2 mm. Fannia pedregalensis sp. nov. (Figs 1F, 3H, 4H, 5H, 6H, 13, 14, 15, 16) Diagnosis. Fore tarsomere 1–4 white-yellowish, tarsomere 5 brown (Fig. 13D). Hind coxa bare. Hind femur slightly curved with pre-apical swelling on v surface, with a tuft of long pv setae (twice longer than width of femur) on the swelling, becoming shorter towards the base (the shorter setae about half width of femur) (Fig. 13F). Wing slightly brownish (Fig. 13C). Description. Holotype male. Body length: 6.0 mm. Wing length: 5.2 mm. Head. Eye short and sparsely setulose. Ocellar triangle black; ocellar setae proclinate and developed (as long as frontal setae). Diptera is one of the most species-diverse insect orders. The paper presents data on the biodiversity of Diptera from 9 families (Tipulidae, Limoniidae, Pediciidae, Mycetophilidae, Keroplatidae, Ptychopteridae, Muscidae, Fanniidae, Sciomyzidae) inhabiting 14 regions within the Volga upland and Oka-Don lowland. The most studied fauna is in the Republic of Mordovia (399 species). The fauna of these families is least known from the Republic of Tatarstan, Lipetsk Region, Nizhny Novgorod Region, and Vladimir Region (9, 19, 20, and 21 species, respectively). A total of 545 species are known from 9 families of Diptera in the large macroregion. The largest number of species includes the families Muscidae (190) and Limoniidae (102). The biodiversity is least known in Ptychopteridae (4 species), Pediciidae (6 species) and Keroplatidae (10 species)., Diptera – это один из наиболее разнообразных по числу видов отряд среди насекомых. The Fannidae includes over 400 described species, mainly known from the Holarctic Region. The number of species in the Oriental Region are underestimated. The Fannia fuscinata-group was established by Wang et al. in 2011, consisting of nine species at present. A new species of the genus Fannia (Diptera, Fanniidae) is described from Yunnan, part of the Oriental Region in China, namely Fannia menglaensis sp. nov. The detailed description, photographs and drawings of adults and male terminalia of F. menglaensis sp. nov. are provided. All specimens are preserved in the Museum of Beijing Forestry University.

The present study examines whether the chaetotaxy of the costal vein in the calyptrate families Fanniidae and Muscidae deserves more attention in phylogenetic and taxonomic contexts. An overview of the macrotrichia and their arrangement on wing vein C is given. Special attention is given to the presence/absence of ventral and dorsal setulae on the costal sectors CS1‒3. This is described as one variable character (A) with nine states (A0‒A8). Specimens of both sexes (when possible) of each species belonging to 4 of a total of 5 fanniid genera and 115 of a total of 179 muscid genus-group taxa were examined and scored for character A. It was found that the presumed ancestral state of character A differs between the two families. It is further shown that the main transformational trend in character A in Muscidae has been bi-directional, leading either to the loss of ventral setulae or the gain of dorsal setulae. The utility of character A in the Fanniidae and Muscidae is many-sided and involves taxa ranging from species to family. It is concluded that character A and other aspects of costal chaetotaxy deserve more attention in morphology-based studies of calyptrate flies.

Family Fanniidae Schnabl & Dziedzicki, 1911 A distinctive, modest-sized family known for ca 400 extant species currently classified in five genera (Table 1). Species belonging to four fanniid genera have presently been scored for the distribution of setulae dorsally and ventrally (character A) on vein C (Table 1) in agreement with the states described above. • Euryomma Stein, 1899, Fannia Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830 (Fig. 2A–C), Piezura Rondani, 1844 (Fig. 2D) All examined species are without ventral setulae behind the lower anterior row of alternating spinules and setulae of vein C (state A0): Euryomma americanum Chillcott, 1961, E. muisca Grisales, Wolff & de Carvalho, 2012, E. peregrinum (Meigen, 1826), Fannia (50+ spp) incl. F. fuscula (Fallén, 1825) (Fig. 2A–C), Piezura graminicola (Zetterstedt, 1846) and P. pardalina Rondani, 1866 (Fig. 2D). In Piezura graminicola and P. pardalina (Fig. 2D) rows of ventral and dorsal costal setulae on CS1 represent setulae displaced from the anterior spinule-setula rows; these accordingly consist of spinules only. • Australofannia Pont, 1977 (Figs 3A–D, 4A–B) This genus consists of Australofannia spiniclunis Pont, 1977 and one undescribed species, both endemic to Australia (Pont 1977). Examination of A. spiniclunis revealed a costal chaetotaxy deviating substantially from the usual fanniid pattern. Both sexes (Figs 3–4) have vein C extensively setulose both ventrally and dorsally (state A8). A checklist is presented of all 986 extant species of Diptera known from the archipelago of the Maltese Islands situated in the central Mediterranean. Species considered to be alien to the Islands are listed with annotations in Appendix 1. The history of dipterology applicable to the islands is outlined and the three important historical published records by Zetterstedt, Rondani and Bezzi & de Stefani-Perez are listed in Appendices 2–4. Species names that are synonyms are indicated where these were used in published records for Malta more or less after the Catalogue of Palaearctic Diptera was published. Species we consider to have been misidentifications are also indicated with an annotation in most cases. Vermileo immaculatus Carles-Tolrá syn. n. & Cuesta-Segura and Vermileo balearicus Wheeler syn. n. are proposed junior synonyms of Vermileo vermileo (Linnaeus).

The Fannia serena species group (Diptera: Fanniidae) ismainly distributed in the Holarctic region and comprises four subgroups with a total of 32 species. Three new species of the Fannia serena-subgroup, Fannia aureomarginata Wang et Cheng, sp. n., F. suberemna Wang, sp. n. and F. wui Wang, sp. n., are described from China. An identification key to all known species of the Fannia serena-subgroup is also provided.

This paper documents the presence of 20 species of Fanniidae in Finland. Fannia alpina Pont, 1970 and F. slovaca Gregor & Rozkošný, 2005 are new to North Europe. Fannia barbata (Stein, 1892), F. lineata (Stein, 1892) and F. nigra Malloch, 1910 are removed from the Finnish checklist. The female of Fannia stigi Rognes, 1982 is described from a Finnish specimen caught together with a male. The total number of fanniid flies known from Finland is now 61.

During a study of arthropod succession on pig carrion in Portugal eleven species of Fannia Robineau-Desvoidy (Diptera: Fanniidae) were collected, of which F. aequilineata Ringdahl, F. armata (Meigen) and F. pusio (Wiedemann) are new records for Portugal, F. consepcta Rudzinski and F. lineata (Stein) are newly recorded for the whole Iberian Peninsula and F. tunisiae Chillcott is for the first time reported from the continental Europe. Additional information on the occurrence of F. conspecta in Czech Republic, Denmark, Greece, and Southern Russia are presented. The number of Fanniidae distributed throughout the Iberian Peninsula raises from 35 to 38 and the number of species reported from Portugal raises from 11 to 17.

A new species of the genusFannia(Diptera, Fanniidae) is described from Yunnan, China, namelyFanniabaihualingensissp. nov.The male habitus as well as terminalia are documented with focus-stacked photographs. A detailed comparison of new species with related species is provided.

Techniques for the survey of necrophagous dipterans are frequently designed for adult flies and often neglect forensically important information, such as the postfeeding larval dispersal following carcass colonization. In this study, we propose and test a novel trap design for the collection of dipteran larvae at the postfeeding stage. The Trap for Dispersing Larvae (TDL) consists of two semiindependent parts: 1) a 2-liter PET bottle, containing the attractant (carcass); and 2) a plastic box, which selectively captures postfeeding dispersing larvae. Based on a field test in a dry forest fragment in Brazil, the TDL trap captured ca. 1,500 larvae of 13 species of Calliphoridae, Muscidae, Fanniidae, and Sarcophagidae. The species richness of dispersing larvae recorded in our study was ca. 60% of that previously recorded in this area. As the TDL trap can assess larval dispersal without interfering with carcass decomposition, we demonstrate that it can be used to assess temporal variation in the dynamics of colonization. In the present study, most larval dispersal occurred at 5-d postexposure, but the traps remained efficient until 7 d, by which time rat carcasses had skeletonized. We conclude that the TDL trap captures the dispersing dipteran larvae with little interference in carcass decomposition processes. The trap also provides a representative sample of species and is simple to use and of low cost.

Entomological material may be used to estimate the time since death occurred (minimum post-mortem interval, mPMI) in forensically obscure cases. The method commonly used to calculate mPMI is the application of a thermal summation model. Little is known about the thermal requirements of Fanniidae. To fill this gap, the influence of temperature on the development time of Fannia canicularis (Linnaeus), a cosmopolitan species with the potential to be used in forensic entomology, was studied. An experiment was performed under nine ambient temperatures. The thermal summation constants (k) and developmental zeros (Tmin) of this species were calculated for six developmental events: hatching, first ecdysis, second ecdysis, wandering, pupariation, and eclosion. Data were primarily analysed with two linear models, and then, since the relationship between temperature and development rate is curvilinear close to the lower and higher developmental thresholds, the relationship was also modelled using three nonlinear models. A fourth nonlinear model was also used to estimate the intrinsic optimum temperature of F. canicularis, at which the population size is maximal and the mortality is the lowest. At 33 °C, larvae did not hatch from eggs, and thus changes in larval body length were analysed at the eight remaining temperatures. Fannia canicularis development from egg to eclosion required a mean ± SE of 481.73 ± 9.89 degree-days above a lower threshold temperature of 4.64 ± 0.19 °C. At the lowest experimental temperature tested, 10 °C, F. canicularis successfully completed all developmental events, although ca. 30% of wandering larvae proceeded to the inactive stage instead of pupariation. Results obtained from nonlinear models were not satisfactory and did not allow us to consider them as reliable from a biological point of view.

Fanniidae This family, formerly considered a subfamily of Muscidae (Sabrosky 1999, Marshall 2012), contains more than 350 species (Evenhuis & Pape 2020). Rondani (1866a, 1868b, 1871a, 1877c) described 13 Palaearctic and one South American nominal species in his “ Stirps Anthomyinae ”. The family Fanniidae was proposed by Schnabl & Dziedzicki (1911). Three of these are currently considered as valid, one as a senior (but invalid) synonym, and ten as junior synonyms (Pont 1972, 1986a, 2002, Gorodkov et al. 1995, Carvalho et al. 2003). Hennig (1961: 226) examined the type material in the MZUF without publishing any lectotype designation. Rondani (1866a) proposed one name in synonymy and was not made available by use as a valid species before 1961; Costa (1866) listed one unpublished name (nomen nudum) of Rondani. Necrophagous flies are of great importance for human and animal health. In places where their development occurs, parasitoids can be used as a tool to control these dipterans. In Brazil, the fauna of these parasitoids has been investigated in some regions. However, in Rio Grande do Sul, it is known the occurrence of only one species. Thus, this study aimed to create the first list of parasitoids in flies of medical and veterinary importance in Southern Brazil. Collections took place in the municipality of Pelotas (31º 42’ S; 52º 18’ W). Three replicates consisting of a 500 g bovine liver chunk placed in a tray were exposed to open air for 20 days. Then pupae were individualized and observed until their emergence. We identified 4,882 adult flies of Calliphoridae, Fanniidae, Muscidae, and Sarcophagidae. 4,040 parasitoids emerged, belonging to eight species, of which Nasonia vitripennis, Spalangia cameroni, Spalangia chontalensis, and Tachinephagus zealandicus are new records in Rio Grande do Sul state. Also, three undescribed species of the genus Aphaereta were collected. In spite of being the first attempt to inventory the fauna of hymenopteran parasitoids, this study may help in the development of management programs of these dipterans in the region. Resumo Moscas necrófagas possuem grande importância para a sanidade humana e animal. Onde estas se desenvolvem ocorrem parasitoides que podem ser utilizados como ferramentas para o controle desses dípteros. No Brasil, a fauna desses parasitoides vem sendo investigada em algumas regiões e no Rio Grande do Sul é conhecida a ocorrência de apenas uma espécie. Portanto, o objetivo deste estudo foi criar a primeira lista de espécies de parasitoides de moscas de importância médica e veterinária ocorrentes no extremo sul do Brasil. As coletas foram realizadas no município de Pelotas (31º 42’ S; 52º 18’ O). Foram montadas três réplicas de bandejas contendo, cada uma, 500 g de fígado bovino, expostas ao ar livre durante 20 dias. Na sequência, as pupas foram individualizadas e observadas até a emergência. Foram identificados 4.882 adultos pertencentes às famílias Calliphoridae, Fanniidae, Muscidae e Sarcophagidae. Emergiram 4.040 parasitoides, pertencentes a oito espécies, das quais Nasonia vitripennis, Spalangia cameroni, Spalangia chontalensis e Tachinephagus zealandicus são novas ocorrências para o Rio Grande do Sul. Foram coletadas três espécies ainda não descritas do gênero Aphaereta. Apesar de ainda ser um primeiro esforço de inventariar a fauna de himenópteros parasitoides, este estudo pode auxiliar no desenvolvimento de programas de manejos desses dípteros na região.

Distance between eye margins at upper part of frons 0.10 mm (about 2x width of anterior ocellus). Frontal vita linear (almost absent) in dorsal half of frons, about 0.15 mm wide ventrally, black in dorsal view and lighter in ventral view, without setulae. Both fronto-orbital plate and parafacial silvery in dorsal view and almost black in ventral view. Fronto-orbital plate approx. 0.05 mm wide dorsally and 0.10 mm ventrally, 6–7 frontal setae without interstitials. Parafacial at upper part 0.10 mmm wide, ventrally approx. 0.08 mm wide (in middle about 2/3 as wide as first flagellomere). Face and gena grey. Eye without ommatrichia. Occiput black, postocular setulae short, uniserial and nearly uniformly long in dorsal part. Antennae black, flagellomere 2x as long as broad. Arista black, basally thickened, microscopically pubescent. Proboscis short, theca of proboscis thinly dusted, clypeus microtrichose. Palpus black, narrow, subequally long as proboscis. Thorax. Black, uniformly rather light bluish-grey microtrichose from all points of view including pleura, without vitae. Presutural acrostichals biserial, postsutural triserial. Setae distinguishable from setulae: 2 postpronotal, 1 seta remarkably close to inner margin of Postpronotum, 1 presutural supraalar, 2 postsutural intraalars, 1 postsutural supraalar. Two prealar setae, anterior one half as long as posterior notopleural, 2 postalars. Notopleuron with two setae and without setulae. Proepisternal depression bare. Both proepisternum and proepimeron with 1 long and 1 shorter seta. Wings very slightly darkened with brownish-yellow veins. Calyptrae white, lower one distinctly projecting beyond upper one. Halter yellow. Legs. Legs blackish-brown, knees of fore legs only very indistinctly paler. Coxa without modified setae. Fore femur with 3 rows of posteroventral, posterior and posterodorsal setae. Fore tibia without setae except preapicals. Mid femur strongly narrowed in apical 1/5, with a row of anteroventrals subequally long as femur depth, abruptly denser and shorter just before apical narrowed part; posteroventral setae in a single row basally, in apical part in two rows, and a single regular row of posterior setae, all slightly longer than femur depth. Mid tibia slightly ventrally compressed in basal third, the ventral mat of soft pubescence about as long as tibia depth on apical half and shorter on basal half, 0–1 anterodorsal and 1 posterodorsal seta. Mid basal tarsomere with distinct basal ventral crest. Hind coxa without setae on posterior inner margin. Hind femur distinctly swollen in apical third, this swollen part contains more than 10 long and irregularly arranged anteroventrals (absent on basal part of femur); with a complete row of posteroventrals turning ventrally on swollen part and merging with anteroventrals. Hind tibia with 1 long submedian dorsal seta, 1 anterodorsal and 1 anteroventral seta, both inserted slightly below dorsal seta and with several short and fine posteroventrals. Abdomen. Ground-colour brownish-black. Densely light grey dusted; segments 2 to 4 with narrow dark midline, lateral parts of tergites without darkening. Terminalia. As in Figs 4–5. Cercal plate well fused, narrow dorsally and broader ventrally, and tapered at tip; surstylus very broad basally; bacilliform sclerite corkscrew-shaped. Measurements. Length of wing, 3.9– 4.1 mm. Length of body, 4.6 mm. Distribution: Czech Republic and Slovakia. Remarks. Fannia bohemica sp. nov. belongs to F. postica group. In the recent key (Barták et al. 2016) this species leads to couplet 20 but differs from all species arranged here by the apically swollen hind femur with more than 10 anteroventrals. Genitalia (except cercal plate) are remarkably similar to the recently described F. latistylata Wang, 2007. However, the latter species differs by presence of posterodorsal setae on hind coxa, lacking crest on mid basal tarsomere, 13–14 frontal setae, 1 supraalar, and brown calyptra and wing.
