Family‐centred practice (FCP) has been suggested as a best practice for treating youth with emotional and behavioural difficulties in residential care. In this preregistered systematic review, we examined how FCP is operationalized and measured in residential youth care and which family outcomes are associated with FCP. Our systematic search in six databases identified 5784 articles. We analysed included articles by coding the operationalizations of FCP in the interventions and study measures. Further, we descriptively summarized relations between FCP and family outcomes. Thirteen articles met our inclusion criteria. In these articles, FCP was operationalized by five types of youth worker actions in interventions and was measured as five types of family involvement. Ten articles examined pre–post differences in family‐centred interventions. Only four articles analysed relations between FCP and a family outcome. Studies found some support for a positive association between FCP and whole‐family functioning, but overall, the association between FCP and family outcomes remains unclear. Our findings demonstrate that more research is needed that specifically examines different aspects of FCP and how they relate to family outcomes in residential youth care. AbstractThis study tested the psychometric properties of an electronic Family Quality of Life Survey (eFQOLS) when used with families of individuals with disabilities and/or chronic health conditions. Data gathered from 272 family caregivers using the eFQOLS were subjected to reliability analysis, correlation analysis, and confirmatory factor analysis to test the internal consistency of the scales, as well as criterion and construct validity of the internal structure of the scale. Testing factor structures of the item-level domain models indicated that initiative and stability had low factor loadings in many domains. As a result, these items were deleted from the subscales. The subscale-level FQOL factor structure demonstrated a good fit after two adjustments. The internal consistency of the 27-item total FQOL scale was excellent (α = .93), while that of the subscales ranged from moderate to strong (α = .69 to .90). The eFQOLS had a moderate degree of construct validity, good criterion validity, and reliability when used with diverse families across the lifespan. The Family Outcomes Survey–Revised (FOS-R) measures family outcomes of services for young children with disabilities or developmental delays, and it can be used to investigate change in outcome achievement over time. To confirm the validity of FOS-R change scores, it must be established that the FOS-R measures the same construct over time; if so, score changes can be attributed to family outcome achievement. However, if not, interpretation of change scores may be misleading. Caregivers (N = 349) of Singaporean children with developmental delays receiving early intervention services completed the FOS-R Part A twice, approximately 1 year apart. Factor analysis was used to confirm the structure of the FOS-R Part A and to assess whether the scale measures the same thing across time (i.e., longitudinal measurement invariance). Results provided support for partial longitudinal measurement invariance, indicating that change scores on this scale can be validly interpreted with certain caveats. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Targeted dental care programs are perceived as a viable approach to both improving oral health and to address inequities. However, the impacts of dental care programs on individual and family oral health outcomes remain unclear. Objectives: The purpose of this scoping review is to map the evidence on impacts of existing dental programs, specifically on individual and family level outcomes. Methods: We systematically searched four scientific databases, MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, and Sociological Abstracts for studies published in the English language between December 1999 and November 2021. Search terms were kept broad to capture a range of programs. Four reviewers (AG, VD, AE, and KKP) independently screened the abstracts and reviewed full-text articles and extracted the data. Cohen's kappa inter-rater reliability score was 0.875, indicating excellent agreement between the reviewers. Data were summarized according to the PRISMA statement. Results: The search yielded 65,887 studies, of which 76 were included in the data synthesis. All but one study assessed various individual-level outcomes (n = 75) and only five investigated family outcomes. The most common program interventions are diagnostic and preventive (n = 35, 46%) care, targeted children (n = 42, 55%), and delivered in school-based settings (n = 28, 37%). The majority of studies (n = 43, 57%) reported a significant improvement in one or more of their reported outcomes; the most assessed outcome was change in dental decay (n = 35). Conclusions: Dental care programs demonstrated effectiveness in addressing individual oral health outcomes. A pilot study was conducted to assess the effects of the IMAGE pilot intervention (Improving Mothers' parenting Abilities, Growth, and Effectiveness) on mothers living with HIV (MLH). Based on Fisher and Fisher's IMB model [1992. Changing AIDS risk behavior. Psychological Bulletin, 111, 455-474], the intervention focused on self-care and parenting behavior skills of MLH that affect maternal, child, and family outcomes. A randomized pre-test-post-test two-group design with repeated assessments was used. MLH (n = 62) and their children aged 6-14 (n = 62; total N = 124) were recruited for the trial and randomized to the theory-based skills training condition or a standard care control condition. Assessments were conducted at baseline with follow-ups at 3, 6, and 12 months. Maternal, child, and family outcomes were assessed. Results show significant effects of the intervention for improving parenting practices for mothers. The intervention also improved family outcomes, and showed improvements in the parent-child relationship. IMAGE had a positive impact on parenting behaviors, and on maternal, child, and family outcomes. Given MLH can be challenged by their illness and also live in under-resourced environments, IMAGE may be viewed as a viable way to improve quality of life and family outcomes.

Background: Men's alcohol misuse does not occur in a vacuum but has a cascade of consequences for families and children, with ties to violence, poor parenting, and poor partner and child mental health. Despite the intersection of individual and interpersonal problems associated with men's alcohol use, studies exploring the impact of men's completion of alcohol misuse treatment on family and family member outcomes are scarce. Here we begin to explore this question. Methods: We conducted qualitative interviews (N ​= ​13) with female partners and children (8–17 years) of men with problem drinking who completed individual treatment targeting alcohol misuse, depressed mood, and family-focused efforts in Eldoret, Kenya. Interviews and thematic content analysis were guided by ecological-transactional systems theory. Results: Findings highlighted positive perceived changes for men, families, women and children that interacted together in a bi-directional pathway. Partners and children described men's reduced drinking, reduced spending, increased family-focused effort (e.g., coming home early), as well as increased emotion regulation, and openness to and communication with family. These changes were tied to perceived improvements in the couple and father-child relationship, including improved trust and time together, which were tied to improvements in women and children's emotional well-being (e.g., hope). Concurrently, reports noted men's increased effort to share money earned with the family which alleviated financial stress and helped ensure basic needs were met. Results aligned with the ecological transactional systems frame, with individuals in the family, family relationships, and economic climate each dynamically shaping each other. Conclusions: Although larger studies are needed, results provide promising signals regarding the potential downstream effects of individual treatment on family systems and members, which may in turn help maintain men's changes in drinking.

Aim: We compared the impact of standard infant physiotherapy and the family‐centred programme, Coping with and Caring for Infants with Special Needs (COPCA), in infants born before 32 weeks without significant brain lesions. Methods: This randomised controlled trial was carried out in patients' homes and outpatient settings in Switzerland between January 2016 and October 2019. We used data from the national SwissNeoNet register and an assessment battery that included infant and family outcomes and video analyses of therapy sessions. The Infant Motor Profile was the primary outcome instrument. Results: The COPCA group comprised six boys and two girls with a median gestational age of 27 weeks (range 25‐30), and the standard care group comprised seven boys and one girl with a median gestational age of 29.5 weeks (range 26‐31). COPCA participants improved significantly more between baseline and 18 months in the IMP variation (9.0 percentage points, 95% confidence interval: 0.3‐17.5) and performance (12.0 percentage points, 95% confidence interval: 4.1‐20.6) domains than standard care participants. COPCA coaching was positively associated with IMP scores at 18 months, but some standard care actions were negatively associated. The transition outcomes for individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and their families are less than desirable. A survey of parent stressors, resources, coping/appraisals, and adaptation to transition was completed by 226 parents. The mediating mechanisms between stressors and parent outcomes were identified. At the indicator level, three stressors (i.e., autism severity, mental health crisis/challenging behaviors, and filial obligation), four resources (i.e., general social support, transition planning quality, parent–teacher alliance, and parenting efficacy), and three coping styles (i.e., problem-focused coping, avoidance-focused coping, and optimism) predicted parents' outcomes (i.e., burden, transition experience, subjective health, and quality of life). At the structural level, optimism, emotion-coping strategies, and resources mediated the relationships between stressors and parental outcomes. Research and practical applications are discussed. Family quality of life (FQoL) constitutes an important aspect of early intervention. However, the culture bound nature of this construct necessitates validation of FQoL measures when being used in a culture different from the one in which they were developed. This study sought to understand the psychometric properties and construct validity of the Beach Center FQoL (BCFQoL) scale in Singapore. Data from 307 caregivers of children in an early intervention program were used. These caregivers completed the BCFQoL scale and external validity measures of family outcomes, psychological distress, and life situation. Confirmatory factor analysis and correlations were used to examine the factor structure and convergent and discriminant validity of the BCFQoL scale. Results indicated support for 5 FQoL dimensions and a higher-order FQoL factor. External convergent and discriminant validity, as well as internal statistical discriminant validity of the individual BCFQoL dimensions were supported. Despite evidence of internal statistical discriminant validity, there was little variation in the strength of the relationships between individual BCFQoL dimensions and the various external validity measures. Early childhood intervention (ECI) services for children on the autism spectrum commonly espouse a family-centered approach but outcomes studies often focus solely upon the child. Mothers of 96 children on the spectrum (aged 4-5 years) completed a measure of access to ECI and the Family Outcomes Survey--Revised. Family outcomes after ECI were generally positive, although a notable proportion of mothers rated that their child still did not participate in social, recreational, or religious activities that they would want to (15.6%) and that as parents, they did not know about post-ECI options (14.6%). Family outcomes and perceived helpfulness of ECI did not differ with demographic data with the exception of Accessing the community subscale, which was significantly higher in families with incomes above AUD$80,000. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) can be diagnosed as early as 18 months of age. State Early Intervention (EI) programs under Part C of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) are serving increasing numbers of children with ASD; however, little is known about outcomes of these services. This study evaluated the impact of EI for toddlers with ASD (n = 193) and other disabilities (n = 129) and their families, using measures that included federal Part C outcome indicators. Children with ASD showed reduced maladaptive behaviors and improved social and communication skills on the PDD Behavior Inventory; some also made progress on the Part C child outcome indicators. Families of children with ASD reported that EI helped them achieve many outcomes identified as important to families participating in EI. Results provide a rich description of outcomes experienced by children with ASD and their families in one of the largest EI programs in the United States. Aims: The purpose of this study was to test the psychometric properties of the Family Quality of Life Survey (FQOLS-2006) when used with urban families predominantly from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds.Methods: Data gathered from 193 family caregivers using the FQOLS-2006 were subjected to reliability analyses, confirmatory factor analyses, and correlational analyses to test the internal consistency of the scales (reliability), factor structure of the scales (construct validity), and convergence between the long and short versions of the tool (criterion validity).Results: Internal consistency of the 54-item total FQOL scale was excellent (α =.89), while that of the six-item domain subscales ranged from moderate to strong (α =.46–.81). Although the subscale-level FQOL factor structure demonstrated good fit, some of the item-level factor loadings within each of the domains were low. Correlations between scores derived from the long and short versions ranged from moderate to strong (r= .37–.73).Conclusions: Although the internal consistency of the scales ranged from moderate to strong, the FQOLS-2006 had only a moderate degree of construct and criterion validity when used with a sample consisting predominantly of minorities from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds. Objective: To investigate the quality of intimate relationships of bisexual, gay, lesbian, and heterosexual individuals in Australia and the United Kingdom. Background: There is a shortage of research on the relationship quality of nonheterosexual individuals, and the majority of the available evidence comes from the United States. We add to existing knowledge by considering bisexual individuals; examining mixed‐orientation couples; and using recent, large, and nationally representative cross‐national data. Method: Data from 25,348 individuals in the United Kingdom (Understanding Society study) and 9,206 individuals in Australia (Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia Survey) were used to estimate regression models predicting relationship quality while adjusting for confounds. Results: Relationship quality in same‐sex couples was as high as in heterosexual couples in the United Kingdom, and higher in Australia. The lowest relationship quality in both countries was reported by bisexual individuals. Conclusion: Our results provide robust evidence to combat deep‐rooted and erroneous social perceptions of same‐sex relationships being conflictual, unhappy, and dysfunctional. Implications: Our findings support policies that seek to legalize same‐sex marriage and parenting rights. Job insecurity (JI) appears a fairly stable job stressor in working life today and likely to impair employee well-being. This review article presents the key findings of studies examining the effects of perceived JI on family well-being (e.g., marital/parental role quality, work–family conflict). The results, based on 25 published peer-reviewed studies, suggest an association between JI and impaired family well-being. Thus, JI spills over into family life as proposed in the spillover theory of work–family interface. Furthermore, studies have found some evidence of crossover effects of JI from parents to children: parents’ JI relates to negative outcomes in children. These results support the view that JI is very likely a severe stressor not only for employees’ well-being and health but also for their families’ well-being. Background Parental perceptions about treatment influence their child's engagement in and ongoing utilization of mental health services, but less is known about the association between caregiver expectancies and family outcomes. The literature is particularly lacking with families of color, who are at high risk for the onset and perpetuation of disruptive behaviors. Methods The purpose of this study was to examine caregiver treatment satisfaction among 320 youth of color aged 7-11 and their families who were assigned to either a Multiple Family Group intervention or services-as-usual condition. Caregiver stress was measured by the Parenting Stress Index-Short Form full scale and child oppositional defiant behaviors were measured using the Iowa Connors Rating Scale-Oppositional/Defiant subscale both at baseline and post-test. Satisfaction with treatment was measured using the Metropolitan Area Child Study process measures program satisfaction subscale at post-test. Results The two main effects models that focused on satisfaction with treatment were predictive of parental stress and child oppositional defiant behaviors independently. Satisfaction with treatment accounted for 31% of the variance in child oppositional behavior and 24% of parental stress improvements across time, holding all covariates constant. Conclusions Our findings support previous research that shows parental expectancies, including treatment satisfaction, are powerful mechanisms of treatment outcomes for children with disruptive behavior disorders as well as parental emotional health. Furthermore, parental expectancies may be enhanced by the involvement of families in the development of treatment approaches for children and a greater focus on caregiver emotional health for the benefit of the family as a whole. Following decades of progress in prosperity, female employment participation and early childhood education and care policies, the recent economic crisis which began in 2007/2008 has had a negative impact on many aspects of family and child well-being in many OECD countries. Although effects vary across countries, the growth in female employment stalled, as did the rebound in fertility rates, divorce rates went up, while child income poverty increased further. The economic crisis also affected family policy. In many countries, income support policies initially expanded but after the onset of the crisis cutbacks to government spending were often made in view of budgetary pressures. In many countries, financial supports for families are less generous now than they were prior to the crisis. By comparison, parental leave arrangements and childcare supports systems have remained largely unscathed in most OECD countries with some countries actually expanding childcare supports despite the limitations to fiscal space. This paper highlights the changes in important family outcomes and related policies that occurred in OECD countries following the onset of the economic crisis, and demonstrates how countries most affected by the crisis faced significantly worse outcomes for families and children. Background Early childhood intervention (ECI) program outcomes remain relatively under-researched. The aim of this study was twofold: (1) to describe outcomes in children and families participating in an Australian ECI service; and (2) to explore child, family, and program characteristics as correlates of these outcomes. Method Twenty-nine families of children with disability were recruited into the study and completed measures of family outcomes, accommodations to disability, perceptions of ECI process of care, and supports received. ECI key workers provided child outcome ratings. Results Associations among disability type, child health, and overall child outcomes were revealed. Process of care was only related to children's social relations outcomes. Family outcomes were positively associated with child care attendance, family-centred practice, and parenting support. Conclusions A range of factors in association with outcomes for both children with disabilities and their families need to be considered in designing practices, policies, and research efforts. This study looks at parents who have adopted children from the U.S. foster care system and identifies relationships between postadoptive services and outcomes for both parents and children alike. Data for the study came from the 2012 U.S. National Adoptive Families Study, an online survey of adoptive parents (N= 437) who have adopted at least 1 child from the U.S. foster care system. The study focused on child outcomes such as social integration and the child's overall improvement and adoptive parent outcomes such as emotional states, changes in close relationships, and satisfaction with the adoption. The study also assessed whether or not these outcomes are associated with adoption dissolution. Results show that parents’ need for and access to postadoption services is associated with many types of parent and child outcomes, but not always in the direction practitioners might assume. Furthermore, these parent and child outcomes are statistically related to adoption dissolution. Future research will delve into whether or not these associations between postadoptive services and outcomes differ among adoptive families based on family structure and social support networks. State early intervention programs (EIPs) have been encouraged to develop and implement comprehensive outcomes measurement systems. As the number of children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and their families receiving services in state EIPs increases, disability-specific outcomes data are needed to better understand issues of access, costs, and benefits. The New York State Early Intervention Program (NYSEIP) used concept mapping with parent and professional stakeholders to define child and family outcomes expected from early intervention services for children with ASD and their families. Stakeholders generated more than 700 statements (synthesized to 105), then individually sorted (17 parents, 39 professionals) these statements into categories. Stakeholders rated each outcome on importance (20 parents, 48 professionals) and likelihood (18 parents, 46 professionals) that EIP services will yield a positive impact. The aggregated sort data were subjected to two separate sets of multivariate statistical analyses, producing an 11-cluster map of professionals’ conceptualization and a 7-cluster map of parent/family members’ conceptualization of the outcomes. Possible explanations for the parent/professional differences are discussed. The results will be used as part of ongoing efforts to develop a comprehensive evaluation system for state Part C EIPs that is grounded in stakeholders’ perspectives on expected outcomes for children and families. Background To examine (1) changes in parent (global psychological distress, trait anxiety) and family (dysfunction, burden) functioning following 12 weeks of child-focused anxiety treatment, and (2) whether changes in these parent and family factors were associated with child's treatment condition and response. Methods Participants were 488 youth ages 7-17 years (50% female; mean age 10.7 years) who met DSM-IV-TR criteria for social phobia, separation anxiety, and/or generalized anxiety disorder, and their parents. Youth were randomly assigned to 12 weeks of 'Coping Cat' individual cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), medication management with sertraline (SRT), their combination (COMB), or medication management with pill placebo (PBO) within the multisite Child/Adolescent Anxiety Multimodal Study (CAMS). At pre- and posttreatment, parents completed measures of trait anxiety, psychological distress, family functioning, and burden of child illness; children completed a measure of family functioning. Blinded independent evaluators rated child's response to treatment using the Clinical Global Impression-Improvement Scale at posttreatment. Results Analyses of covariance revealed that parental psychological distress and trait anxiety, and parent-reported family dysfunction improved only for parents of children who were rated as treatment responders, and these changes were unrelated to treatment condition. Family burden and child-reported family dysfunction improved significantly from pre- to posttreatment regardless of treatment condition or response. Conclusions Findings suggest that child-focused anxiety treatments, regardless of intervention condition, can result in improvements in nontargeted parent symptoms and family functioning particularly when children respond successfully to the treatment. Background The concept of family quality of life has emerged as a decisive construct in the last decades to improve the capabilities of families and to assess the outcomes of the services and supports they get. The goal of this research is to adapt three instruments to the Spanish population: the 'Beach Center Family Quality of Life Scale', the 'Beach Center Family-Professional Partnership Scale' and the 'Service Inventory'. These tools were originally designed by researchers from the Beach Center on Disability, University of Kansas, in order to obtain some input from the families of people with intellectual disability (ID) with regard to the attention they get from the early childhood intervention services. Method The sample included a total of 202 families of children with ID, between 0 and 6 years old, all of them cared for at 13 early childhood intervention centres. Based on a confirmatory factorial analysis, we have explored the psychometric properties of the three scales administered to respondents. Statistical analyses were conducted with the spss software version 17.0 and the EQS software version 6.1 for Structural Equation Models. Results The results confirm that the factor structure of the 'Beach Center Family Quality of Life Scale', the 'Beach Center Family-Professional Partnership Scale' and the 'Service Inventory' adapted for the Spanish population fit the factor models proposed by the authors of the surveys. Abstract: Background: Examining rates of difficulties in family functioning following very preterm birth has been a relatively neglected area of research. Aims: To examine family functioning, burden and parenting stress in families with very preterm compared with term born children, and investigate influences of parental mental health problems and child neurodevelopmental disability on family outcomes in families with preterm children. Study design: Participants were 184 very preterm and 71 term children and their parents. Parents completed the Family Assessment Device, Parenting Stress Index and Impact on Family questionnaires when their children were 2years old (corrected for prematurity). Parental mental health and social risk information were also collected. Children were assessed for neurodevelopmental disability. Results: Families with very preterm children reported poorer family functioning (p =.03) compared with families with term born children, with less evidence for differences between families with very preterm and term born children in parenting stress and family burden. Within very preterm families, parental mental health problems were associated with higher levels of parenting stress (p =.001), and parents of children with a neurodevelopmental disability were more likely to report higher family burden (p =.04). Conclusions: For families with very preterm children, parental mental health symptoms and child neurodevelopmental disability may identify families at risk of greater stress and burden who may benefit from additional support. Few psychometrically valid scales exist to assess family outcomes and the helpfulness of early intervention. This article describes the development and psychometric properties of the Family Outcomes Survey—Revised. The revision was prompted by the need to (a) create a new format that would be easier for parents to understand, (b) revise and expand the survey items to provide more information for states to use in planning for program improvement, and (c) demonstrate acceptable psychometric properties. Input from stakeholders and experts was used to identify concepts and develop candidate items. Data from a web-based survey conducted with 265 families in Illinois and Texas were used to assess the psychometric properties of candidate items. Several recent articles have explored the effects of military deployment on U.S. service members' mental health outcomes. Although increased attention has also begun to focus on the effects of deployment on military families, providing a conceptualization for the mechanisms of this process can help organize existing information and inform future efforts. In this article we seek to draw greater attention to the effects of deployment on service members and to provide an overview of recent literature on the impact of deployment on service members and military families. A further goal is then to provide one conceptual perspective—a model of family stability—that may help inform our understanding of the impact of military deployment on families. Beyond informing research, the issues presented in this article have far-reaching consequences not only for American military families and their current mental health and primary care providers but also for practitioners in the broader mental health community who will be increasingly called upon to provide services to this population. In this study, the authors use data from two states to compare how families participating in early intervention who completed a Spanish version of the Family Outcomes Survey (FOS) (n = 291) compared with Hispanic (n = 486) and non-Hispanic (n = 2,363) families who completed the English version. In general, most families reported positive outcomes, but there was variability in their responses. Families completing the survey in Spanish consistently reported lower outcome attainment than both Hispanic and non-Hispanic families completing the FOS in English. They also reported lower perceptions of the helpfulness of early intervention, but the three groups did not differ with regard to perceptions of family-centered practices. Factor analysis revealed that constructs assessed by the survey are similar for both the English and Spanish version of the survey. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the consequences of a patient's admission to critical care settings, causing families to face more psychosocial issues than in previous years. Thus, nurses and other clinicians need to keep abreast of interventions that support the families of critical care patients. To provide evidence of nurse-led family interventions and their family outcomes in adult critical care settings. A mixed method systematic review in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis checklist. The search included both a screen of relevant databases (PubMed, Scopus, Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literature, and the Cochrane Library) and the screening of citations in relevant articles. Studies published in the English language between January 2010 and October 2020 were considered. The final database searches were performed on 20 October 2020. Screening and eligibility assessment were conducted using the Rayyan software. Studies describing the family outcomes of nurse-led interventions in adult critical care settings through either qualitative or quantitative methods were included, i.e., the mixed method synthesis permitted the inclusion of either qualitative or quantitative findings. Article quality was evaluated by three authors using the Joanna Briggs Institute's critical appraisal tools. A total of 15 studies – two trials, eight quasi-experimental studies, four qualitative, and one mixed method met the inclusion criteria. The described interventions were organized into five categories: educational/informational; family involvement in care; diary; communication; and bundled interventions. These categories varied in terms of elements, delivery, and family outcomes. Nurse-led interventions that resulted in small to medium improvements in family outcomes included educational interventions with digital storytelling, a bundled approach, informational nursing interventions, and nurse-driven emotional support. The included studies (n = 2) that investigated family rounds in the ICU reported that this approach did not noticeably influence family outcomes. The differences in the intervention elements, tools, and outcomes evaluated in this review reflect the diversity of family needs, and that numerous interventions have already been developed to promote family health in critical care settings. Early-intervention programs for infants and toddlers are increasingly being asked to provide data showing that they are effective. Usually this means proving benefit for children, but here we argue that documenting benefit for families is also important. A recent national effort has led to the identification of 5 desired outcomes for families whose children participate in early-intervention programs. This article discusses issues and considerations in documenting family outcomes in the context of large-scale assessments involving many families and describes the initial development of a survey instrument that could be useful in such efforts. Abstract: In an era in which evidence based practices are becoming the standard of care, there is little evidence that the current array of services commonly delivered for those with autism is helpful. This study describes community-based service utilization and caregiver-rated outcomes of services on symptoms of 113 children with autism spectrum disorders and their families. Parents/caregivers reported on nine types of services, received in the prior 6 months, which were evaluated against child and family outcomes. Caregivers rated in-home behavior therapy as providing the best outcomes overall for the child and respite care as providing the best outcomes for the family. Younger children were reported to have better outcomes than older children. Polytherapy was the rule, rather than the exception, as children used a mean of 3.5 different services. The frequency of services and the number of different types of services utilized correlated with family but not child outcomes. Examination of the potentiating effect of medication on outcomes of psychosocial interventions was not significant. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Work-based support has effects on family outcomes (Thompson, Kirk, & Brown, Stress and Health, 2005, 21, 199–207), suggesting that the effects of work-based support are transmitted to the family environment through some mediating mechanism. This study examines two potential mediating mechanisms, emotional exhaustion and work interference with family (WIF). It was expected that women would report higher levels of work support, and work support would have a stronger relationship with outcomes for women. Gender as a moderator of the relationships between work support, and emotional exhaustion, WIF, and family environment (family cohesion, family conflict) was tested via regression analyses. Eighty-one males (43.3 per cent) and 106 females (56.7 per cent), and their spouse/partners participated in the study. Women reported higher levels of coworker support than men, and support from supervisors predicted WIF only for women. Gender did not moderate the work support—family environment relationship. WIF, but not emotional exhaustion, mediated the relationship between supervisor and coworker support, and employee reports of family cohesion. Spouse/partner reports of family environment were not predicted by the study variables. Thus, work support reduces employee negative perceptions of the family environment through reduced work–family stress, and the impact is similar for men and women. This article presents a comparative study in which social indicators were employed as a means to examine differences in living conditions and family and children outcomes on a local level. The study obtained household-level data on the well-being of children and families in two cities: New York (NYC) and Tel Aviv (TLV). Data were collected using computer assisted telephone interview (CATI) technology and random digit dialing (RDD). Telephone interviews were conducted with the randomly selected adults in English, Spanish and Chinese in NYC and in Hebrew in TLV. The study reported here documented differences in family and child well-being between the two cities. It further documented that family size and caregiver level of education play a similar role in both cities and their importance in regard to child and family outcomes. The significant differences found in adults’ and especially children’s outcomes were analyzed by the caregiver’s level of education and further support the need for policies that alleviate the burden of less educated caregivers and aim to improve the well-being of them and their families. The study demonstrates the relevance of social indicators at the local level, not only for measuring outcomes among specific populations, but also in regard to their possible implications for social policies, a most timely task in an era of social services devolution. The authors undertook a review of measures available for assessing outcomes of early childhood services for children with disabilities and their families. With principles of family-centered practice mandating the inclusion of both family and child outcome measures in effective evaluation plans, the review examined measures with established psychometric properties for (a) documenting the effectiveness of partnerships with families, and (b) documenting the effectiveness of services and supports for families. Constructs and their associated measures related to partnerships include satisfaction with the overall program and empowerment. The constructs for outcomes of supports and services include social support, parenting, and family quality of life. The authors reviewed measures for each of the five constructs. They note that the selection of appropriate measures to assess the outcomes of family support and services depends on the specific configuration of support services provided by the program and that each program may have to be explicit about the outcomes it wants to impact and therefore measure. Objectives Although children with very low birth weight (VLBW, <1500 g) are at high risk for developmental impairments, we know little about the long-term effects of VLBW on families. This study examined long-term family outcomes and their stability over time. Methods Participants were the families of 64 children with <750 g birth weight, 54 with 750–1499 g birth weight, and 66 term-born controls. Family burden and parental distress were assessed annually as part of longitudinal follow-up of the children from mean ages 11–14 years. Results Family burden and parental distress were higher in the <750 g group than in the term-born group, but differences varied with the child's age and family environment. Primary objective: To examine the utility of a coordinated, family/community-focused programme (PABICOP) vs. a standard approach for improving outcomes for children with ABI and their families.Research design: Pre-test–post-test design, with comparison group and follow-up.Methods and procedures: Ninety-six children (64 children receiving PABICOP services and 32 children receiving standard care) participated in the study. Measures were completed at baseline and 3 and 12 months later.Main outcomes and results: Parents/caregivers with more than 10 contacts with PABICOP scored significantly higher on an ABI knowledge quiz than either parents/caregivers with 10 contacts or less or the comparison group at post-test and follow-up. Parents/caregivers with 10 contacts or less with PABICOP reported significantly greater improvements in children's school and total competence on the CBCL than either parents/caregivers with more than 10 contacts or the comparison group at post-test and follow-up.Conclusions: PABICOP may be more useful for enhancing knowledge of ABI for parents/caregivers and for integrating children into the community over a 1-year period than a standard approach. The role the legal process of separation and divorce plays in affecting outcomes for young children and their families was examined in the Collaborative Divorce Project (CDP), an intervention designed to assist the parents of children six years old or younger as they begin the separation/divorce process (married and unmarried couples). Evaluation and outcome data were collected from 161 couples, their attorneys, teachers, and court records. In addition to positive evaluations from both parents, intervention families benefited through lower conflict, greater father involvement, and better outcomes for children than the control group. Attorneys and court records indicate that intervention families were more cooperative and were less likely to need custody evaluations and other costly services. The CDP illustrates how prevention programs can be located within the courts, can be systematically evaluated, and can aid in helping the legal system function optimally for families with young children. Abstract Background The concept of family quality of life (QoL) has emerged as an important outcome of service delivery for individuals with disabilities and their families. The present study describes the process of developing a tool to measure family QoL. Methods and Results A total of 1197 respondents participated in a national field test. Through factor analysis, the survey was refined in several ways: (1) the preliminary 10-domain structure was reduced to a five-domain structure; (2) a total of 41 items were selected for the revised survey; and (3) wordings were clarified. Despite the importance of empowerment and the support network of families who receive early intervention (EI) with a family-centered approach, there is little evidence of a relationship between these two variables and family characteristics that might influence this relationship. This study analyzes the correlations between the perception of empowerment of the families, the family supports used, and the socio-demographic factors of both the child and the family. The study consisted of 44 families who received family-centered EI services. Our results show that families mainly used formal supports, followed by informal supports, and, to a lesser extent, intermediate supports. This indicates that families with children who receive EI preferably use the support network based on EI programs, schools, and professionals. Along with this formal support network, primary caregivers rely on their partners, parents, or friends-that is, the informal support network. Family empowerment was not correlated with age, diagnosis, or the reason for referral to EI; on the other hand, it was related to the supports where the families with the lowest empowerment scores were those who made greater use of formal support over informal support. Early intervention professionals must know, from the first encounter, the type and level of support of each family to enhance the development of the child and promote empowerment in families.

Background: Men's alcohol misuse does not occur in a vacuum but has a cascade of consequences for families and children, with ties to violence, poor parenting, and poor partner and child mental health. Despite the intersection of individual and interpersonal problems associated with men's alcohol use, studies exploring the impact of men's completion of alcohol misuse treatment on family and family member outcomes are scarce. Here we begin to explore this question., Methods: We conducted qualitative interviews (N = 13) with female partners and children (8-17 years) of men with problem drinking who completed individual treatment targeting alcohol misuse, depressed mood, and family-focused efforts in Eldoret, Kenya. Interviews and thematic content analysis were guided by ecological-transactional systems theory., Results: Findings highlighted positive perceived changes for men, families, women and children that interacted together in a bi-directional pathway. Partners and children described men's reduced drinking, reduced spending, increased family-focused effort (e.g., coming home early), as well as increased emotion regulation, and openness to and communication with family. These changes were tied to perceived improvements in the couple and father-child relationship, including improved trust and time together, which were tied to improvements in women and children's emotional well-being (e.g., hope). Concurrently, reports noted men's increased effort to share money earned with the family which alleviated financial stress and helped ensure basic needs were met. Background: With family centred practice as one of the tenets in early childhood intervention (ECI), it is important to understand family outcomes as a means of assessing the effectiveness of ECI services.Aims: The present paper investigates the psychometric properties of an expanded measure of caregivers' perceptions of helpfulness of ECI services, the Family Outcomes Survey - Revised, Expanded Part B (FOS-RE B).Methods and Procedures: Two-hundred and forty-six caregivers of children enrolled in an ECI programme in Singapore completed the FOS-RE B, as well as convergent validity measures (FOS-R Part A, Depression, Stress and Anxiety Scale and questions addressing perceptions of family situation and optimism for the child's future). Confirmatory factor analysis was used to examine the factor structure of the FOS-RE B and correlations were used to examine convergent validity.Outcomes and Results: The factor structure of the FOS-RE B was found to mirror the structure of the FOS-R A, as hypothesized. Evidence for convergent validity, in the form of correlations with family well-being measures was found, as well as evidence for good internal consistency reliability.Conclusions and Implications: It is concluded that the FOS-RE B presents a promising measure of perceived helpfulness of ECI services. Celebrating Journal of Vocational Behavior 50th Anniversary Special Issue, we acknowledge in this essay the strides made by work-family researchers in the last 50 years and propose new directions that would stimulate research on the interface of work and family from a vocational and organizational perspectives. The invited paper by Kossek, Perrigino and Gounden Rock (2021) reviews the different paths taken by the work-family and career literatures and suggests concrete ways in which future researchers can integrate work-family and careers perspective theoretically and empirically. In this contribution to Journal of Vocational Behavior 50th Anniversary, we add to Kossek and colleagues call by suggesting research on the interface of work and family should expand its scope by focusing on (a) true family outcomes – those that families, not employers, consider important; (b) family-level outcomes – outcomes that are observed when two or more people interact within the family unit, not just individual outcomes; and (c) the joint effect of work and social policies on work-related family decisions and outcomes – taking into account that families use all available resources available to them, not just those provided by their employer. • Work-family (WF) research should bring together organizational and vocational research. • WF research should consider the increase in organizational social actions on WF outcomes. • WF research should consider family outcomes that are important not just to organizations, but also to families. • WF research should consider family-level outcomes that are a result of two or more people interacting within the family. • WF research should consider the joint effect of work and social policies on work-related family decisions and outcomes. This qualitative study aimed to understand the stressors, external and internal support, coping strategies, and family adaptation outcomes during transition, from a parent's perspective, using the ABCX model (McCubbin & McCubbin, 1993). Thirteen parents of adolescents and young adults with ASD were interviewed. These parents reported a continually high level of stress due to normative strains and ASD-related demands. They described the tangible, emotional, informational, and internal resources received and needed. Parents, as active agents in their children's lives, have their own views towards transition, philosophy, and ways of coping. Even though many of them reported negative experiences, these parents also found new meanings and happiness in their lives. This study detailed the adaptation process during transition.
