The terms 'resistance' and 'tolerance' are well defined in the context of antibiotic research. However, in the field of disinfection, these terms are often used synonymously, which creates ambiguity and can lead to misunderstandings and misconceptions. In addition, this inconsistency in terminology makes it difficult to assess the risk of a disinfectant resistance. This general review aims to discuss existing definitions of the terms 'adaptation', 'susceptibility', 'tolerance', 'persistence' and 'resistance' in the light of disinfectants. The most ambiguity is found between tolerance and resistance. Whereas the former describes the not necessarily heritable survival of transient exposure to usually lethal concentrations, resistance is the strictly heritable ability to survive otherwise lethal concentrations of an antimicrobial agent, regardless of exposure time. A simple transfer of experience from antibiotic research is not recommended when assessing the risk of resistance to disinfectants, as there are important differences between antibiotics and disinfectants, although both are antimicrobials: (i) disinfectants are usually applied at concentrations that exceed the minimum inhibitory concentration by orders of magnitude, (ii) the exposure times of disinfectants are in the range of seconds, minutes, or a few hours, (iii) the mode of action of disinfectants is less specific, and (iv) disinfectants often contain more than one active agent with additive or synergistic effects. It is important to recognize that disinfectants, like other antimicrobial agents such as antibiotics, have a dualistic nature and should be used correctly and with caution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recently, using eco-friendly controlling methods against pests has been getting great attention. Therefore, this study aimed to assess synthesis of two different phases of nano aluminum oxide, alpha and Gamma, (α- and γ-Al2O3 NPs) from wastes. Additionally, evaluate them to control stored product mites, Mycetoglyphus fungivorus, and Caloglyphus mycophagus, and the fungi Aspergillus flavus, Alternaria sp., and Fusarium oxysporum. Two phases of Al2O3 NPs were synthesized in acidic and basic media and characterized using the field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) and thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA). Mortality percentages of mites were evaluated at concentrations of 10, 30 and 60 ppm after 1, 2, 3 and 4 days. The growth of fungi was assessed to determine the fungicidal concentrations in PDB cultures by Mycelium Dry Weights Method. The study confirmed the formation and thermal stability of α- and γ-Al2O3 NPs using FESEM, UVVis and TGA. The average particle size of α-Al2O3 is 4–10 nm and for γ- Al2O3 is 14–30 nm. Both phases were toxic to tested stages of mites. Increasing concentration and exposure time, results in increased mite mortality rates. γ-Al2O3 NPs were more efficient than α-NPs post initial exposure, then all through time both have the same effect. The female's fecundity was significantly influenced. Tested eggs did not hatch at all. The toxic activity remained strong after 1, 2, and 3 months of exposure. The SEM images revealed a strong adhesive of α- and γ-NPs which were visibly bonded to various areas of dead mite females. γ-Al2O3 showed antifungal activity more than the α-NPs. Concentrations of fungicides depended on the fungal strain sensitivity. It has been concluded that α- and γ-Al2O3 NPs are efficient environmentally friendly agents against the proliferation of storage mites and mycotoxin producing fungi. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the present study, we examined the effect of extreme temperatures on different life stages of Ephestia kuehniella Zeller (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae). The individuals were exposed to different temperatures ranging between 5 and −18 °C for cold treatment, and between 30 and 55 °C for heat treatment, and different exposure intervals, ranging from minutes to days. Complete control was achieved at −10 and −15 °C for cold treatment and 50 and 55 °C for heat treatment at all exposure intervals. Considering the efficacy of extreme temperatures for the control of E. kuehniella, our study provides specific temperature exposure modules that can be effective for the control of this species. Objective To understand the liver function status of male workers occupationally exposed to hepatotoxic substances and to explore the relationship between liver function indicators and exposed hazards, providing a basis for formulating reasonable health monitoring plans and effective protective measures. Methods Health examination data of male workers engaged in work related to hepatotoxic substances from 2013 to 2021 at a certain occupational disease prevention institution in Shanghai was collected. The occurrences of various liver function indicators and their relationship with age or exposure time were studied. Results Over 9 years, 92 788 male workers were examined. The exposure time of these workers occupationally exposed to hepatotoxic substances ranged from 0.5 to 45.0 years, with a median value of 5.0 years. A total of 52 096 workers were tested for all 8 liver function indicators. The abnormality rates of each liver function indicator were as follows: ALT 22.7%, AST 4.4%, TP 0.0%, ALB 0.5%, TBIL 44.2%, DBIL 16.9%, GGT 15.7%, and ALP 4.2% . Overall, the indicators ALT, AST, and GGT showed an increasing trend with years of service (r = 0.045 - 0.155, P < 0.05), with GGT having the strongest correlation with years of service. DBIL and ALP showed a decreasing trend with years of service (r = -0.180, -0.033, P < 0.05). There was no significant correlation between years of service and TBIL levels (P > 0.05). After age stratification, most age groups still showed a correlation between liver cell damage indicators (ALT, AST, GGT, and ALP) and years of service; in the younger age group, the correlation between AST, GGT, and ALP with years of service was consistent with the overall results; in the older age group, the correlation was no longer significant. The correlation between the liver synthesis and metabolism indicator DBIL and years of service only appeared in the 18-29 age group. Conclusions With proper protection, long-term, low-level exposure to hepatotoxic substances does not cause severe health damage to workers. However, as years of service increase, there is still potential for liver function impairment. Enterprises need to standardize operating procedures, ensure exposure levels are below the national exposure limits, and protect the health of workers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

With the development of autonomous cars, the incidence of motion sickness has increased. Current studies on the characteristics of motion sickness have primarily focused on its long-term characteristics while ignoring its short-term characteristics, especially for the reporting time of the real-time evaluation method. This study explores the long and short-term characteristics of motion sickness, and uses self-reported motion sickness ratings at the end of car motion (the high point) and 3 s after the end of motion (the low point). Motion sickness ratings increased with task vs. no-task conditions. There is no significant correction between gender and maximum motion sickness in this study. Moreover, participants with high motion sickness susceptibility experienced increased motion sickness. New approaches to low salinity water (LSW) injection methods, such as LSW/surfactant, LSW/polymer, and LSW/nanofluid flooding, have been studied for oil reservoirs. Numerous researchers discussed the mechanisms related to enhanced oil recovery (EOR) efficiency and highlighted the significant impact of the wettability alteration and interfacial tension (IFT) reduction. This work studied the effect of exposure time on the wettability alteration and IFT in the LSW/nanoparticle (LSWN) flooding. Contact angle tests investigated rock wettability over a series of different times. A pendant drop tensiometer was used to measure the IFT. By coreflood apparatus, waterflood tests were also conducted, considering the effect of soaking time. Laboratory results showed that the involved mechanisms are time-dependent. More water-wet conditions and higher oil recovery were obtained under longer soaking time. In addition, the positive effect of LSWN was observed in tertiary flooding tests. The results also indicate that the effect of water-soluble oil compounds should be considered in measuring wettability and IFT. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A promising method for additive manufacturing that makes it possible to produce intricate and personalized parts is selective laser melting (SLM). However, the mechanical properties of as-corroded SLM parts are still areas of concern. This research investigates the mechanical behavior of SLM parts that are exposed to a saline environment containing a 3.5% NaCl solution for varying lengths of time. The exposure times chosen for this study were 10 days, 20 days, and 30 days. The results reveal that the tensile strength of the parts is significantly affected by the duration of exposure. Additionally, the study also examined the influence of porosity on the corrosion behavior of the parts. The analysis included studying the mass loss of the parts over time, and a regression analysis was conducted to analyze the relationship between exposure time and mass loss. In addition, the utilization of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photo spectroscopy (XPS) techniques yielded valuable insights into the fundamental mechanisms accountable for the observed corrosion and mechanical behavior. It was found that the presence of corrosion products (i.e., oxide layer) and pitting contributed to the degradation of the SLM parts in the saline environment. This research emphasizes the importance of considering part thickness in the design of SLM components for corrosive environments and provides insights for enhancing their performance and durability. The associations between intimate partner violence (IPV) and postpartum depression (PPD) have been well established in previous reviews. However, none has explored potential differences between IPV subtypes or exposure times, which could help healthcare providers recognize the adverse impacts of various IPV subtypes and conduct comprehensive IPV screening. This study aimed to estimate the impacts of overall IPV and its subtypes (physical, psychological, and sexual) on PPD using an updated meta-analysis and to examine the potential role of IPV exposure time and regional income levels. Four English databases (Medline, PsycINFO, PubMed, and Web of Science) and two Chinese databases (China National Knowledge Infrastructure [CNKI] and Wanfang Database) were systematically searched. We included 76 studies with 388,966 samples. Random-effects models were used to pool the odds ratios (ORs) across studies. Overall, IPV and its subtypes had statistically significant impacts on PPD (overall: OR = 2.50, physical: OR = 2.31, psychological: OR = 2.22, sexual: OR = 1.75). A higher impact of IPV on PPD was observed in middle- and low-income regions (OR = 3.01) than in high-income regions (OR = 1.92). IPV during pregnancy (OR = 2.73) had a greater impact on PPD than lifetime IPV (OR = 2.24). This study provides updated evidence for the significant impact of IPV and its subtypes and exposure time on PPD. Women at risk of exposure to physical IPV, especially during pregnancy, are in urgent need of support to reduce the risk of PPD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Chinese cabbage (Brassica rapa ssp. pekinensis), a green vegetable with high nutritional value, has been found to be rich in glucosinolates. Brassinosteroids (BRs), which regulate various plant growth and development processes, have been studied for their effect on glucosinolate production in in vitro shoot cultures. In this study, the most active compound in brassinosteroids, brassinolide, was used at different concentrations to test its effect on glucosinolate biosynthesis. A total glucosinolate content of 8.512 µmol g−1 DW was observed on MS optimal medium supplemented with 0.2 mg L−1 brassinolide. The expression of key genes related to glucosinolate biosynthesis and brassinolide signaling pathways was upregulated by brassinolide treatment. This research provides valuable insights for pharmaceutical and food companies interested in producing consistent levels of glucosinolates in Chinese cabbage shoots through the use of brassinolide.Key message: Inclusion of brassinolide in the culture medium triggered glucosinolates biosynthesis in shoot culture of Chinese cabbage. Spontaneous combustion of residual coal in the goaf is one of the main disasters in coal mines. Understanding the law of spontaneous combustion of residual coal can effectively prevent coal mine fires. This paper establishes a dynamic evolution model of overburden caving and porosity in the goaf using PFC numerical simulation software, and compares and analyzes the dynamic changes in porosity and the spontaneous combustion zone at advancing distances of 50 m, 70 m, and 100 m. The results show that when the working face advances 100 m, the porosity in the caving zone of the goaf decreases from 0–0.6 to 0.16–0.3. The range of the spontaneous combustion zone on the return air side expands from 42m-50 m to 39m–61 m, and on the inlet side, it expands from 0 to 22m–50 m. With increased exposure time, the spontaneous combustion zone range shifts slightly forward to 32m–55 m on the inlet side and 21m–49 m on the return side. This study reveals the dynamic evolution law of the spontaneous combustion zone in the goaf under the influence of different advancing distances and exposure times, which can assist in preventing goaf fires.

Salmonella spp. is not part of the fish microbiota, being introduced through contaminated water or improper handling. In slaughterhouses, five parts per million (ppm) of free chlorine is recommended in the washing step to eliminate this pathogen. However, Salmonella spp. is still detected in fish processing plants due to persistent contamination as a result of chlorine–organic matter interactions that reduce chlorine effectiveness. Therefore, this study aimed to test whether organic matter contained in culture media and fish washes interferes with the efficacy of chlorine at 2 and 5 ppm, and what is the time of action required to inactivate ATCC and wild strains of S. typhimurium. For this, the elimination or survival of these strains was investigated when exposed to chlorinated solution for different durations (0, 5, 30, 60, 90 and 120 min) in culture medium, 0.85% saline solution and fish wash (in natura and sterilized). The results showed that the use of 5 ppm of free chlorine is efficient, even when the chlorine remains in contact with the organic matter (washed from the fish), as it reduced the bacterial population by ~5 log log10 CFU/mL of Salmonella spp., showing that this reduction was due to interactions, as long as the chlorine action time was 30 min.

Background Parthenium is an invasive annual weed that affects crop production, rangelands, grasslands, animals, the environment, and human health. Since its introduction into Ethiopia, different management options such as uprooting, slashing, burning, plowing, and applying synthetic herbicides have been practiced. However, these options are not sustainable in weed management. However, Zygogramma bicolorata is known to be used in different countries. Although many countries use it under field conditions, its population-based efficacy has not been well studied in Ethiopia. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of Z. bicolorata populations on parthenium plants under greenhouse conditions. Methods This experiment was conducted at the Ambo Agricultural Research Center. Different numbers of Z. bicolorata per plant were used as treatments and were laid out in a completely randomized design with three replications. The numbers of damaged leaves, eggs, and larvae were recorded daily until the leaves were completely defoliated. The collected data and the correlation between beetle population and leaf defoliation were analyzed using SAS. Results The result revealed that all beetle populations caused damage to weed plants. A higher population of beetles completely defoliated the leaves within 12 days. However, lower numbers required 21 days to completely defoliate the weed. In contrast, a higher number of eggs (328.67) and larvae (272.33) were obtained from plants that received 20 pairs of beetles. The beetle population and exposure time were positively correlated, and the effectiveness of the bioagent was greater following the emergence of larvae. Conclusions Z. bicolorata can manage parthenium weeds, even with a lower population. However, more than 15 pairs of beetles could be suggested to manage weeds in a shorter time, and further study is needed under field conditions by considering the different agroecologies of the country.

The intensity of exposure to index cases of tuberculosis [TB] may increase the risk of TB in their contacts. The aim was to determine TB risk factors among contacts of TB index cases. A cohort study was carried out in the contacts of pulmonary TB cases registered by the epidemiological surveillance network from 01/01/2019 to 06/30/2021. The factors associated with the risk of TB in contacts were determined using the adjusted odds ratio [aOR] and its 95% confidence interval [CI]. From 847 TB cases, 7087 contacts were identified. The prevalence of TB was 2.0% [145/7087] and was higher in < 5 years compared to those ≥ 65 years [4.4% versus 1.2%; p < 0.001], in those exposed ≥ 6 h daily [4%], and < 6 h daily [1.6%] with respect to weekly exposure of < 6 h [0.7%; p < 0.001]. Those contacts exposed ≥ 6 h daily [aOR= 6.9; 95%CI:2.1–22.1], < 5 years [aOR= 8.3; 95%CI:1.8–37.8] and immigrants [aOR= 1.7; 95%CI:1.1–2.7] had a higher risk of TB. The risk of TB increases with the time of exposure to the index case and this risk is also higher in < 5 years and immigrants. Contact tracing has a high yield for detecting new cases of TB. Simple Summary: Turkestan cockroaches are primarily outdoor nuisance pests in many parts of the world. The application of pesticide sprays in and around areas where cockroaches aggregate is a common practice in trying to reduce their populations. Intensive pesticide treatments can lead to pesticide runoff into water sources, such as rivers, lakes, streams, and dwells. Insecticide-based paints offer an alternative option for long-term efficacy in controlling cockroaches with diminished environmental impacts. In this study, pyrethroid-based paints applied to concrete, metal, and PVC—common surfaces where cockroaches reside—were demonstrated to kill and repel Turkestan cockroach nymphs. The pyrethroid alphacypermethrin produced the highest mortality most rapidly. The lethal and repellency effects of these paints may help prevent the establishment of Turkestan cockroaches around buildings. These results support the use of insecticide-paint technologies in areas where Turkestan cockroaches are a dominant pest. The Turkestan cockroach, Periplaneta lateralis (Walker), is an invasive urban pest prevalent in dry areas of the southwestern United States. Treatment with liquid spray formulations containing insecticides is the most conventional method to decrease Turkestan cockroach population abundance around buildings. Intensive application of insecticide treatments near natural environments has prompted concerns regarding the impacts on non-target aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. Technologies embedding insecticides in a paint matrix have successfully been used for the long-term reduction in disease-vector populations in tropical areas. Here, we evaluated the potential effectiveness of three pyrethroid-based paints against Turkestan cockroach nymphs on common surfaces inhabited by this species. Turkestan cockroaches continuously exposed for 1 h to 1-month aged alphacypermethrin and deltamethrin paints applied to concrete, metal, or PVC caused moderate to high mortality. Evaluations using choice boxes indicated that deltamethrin and transfluthrin paints had combined lethal and repellent effects on cockroaches. Alphacypermethrin also caused repellency and killed cockroaches rapidly. We discuss the implications of these findings on cockroach control practices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The breathing and suspended inspiration techniques are often used interchangeably for spine X-ray examinations. However, these techniques are not always adequately supported by clinical evidence. This study aimed to determine the two techniques' diagnostic value and adverse image outcomes. A total of 400 participants were examined on a Siemens Ysio Max system and randomized into four examination groups: suspended inspiration or breathing techniques with exposure times of 1, 2, and 3.2 s, respectively. Two consultant radiologists conducted the evaluation of the X-ray images. If disagreement was present, the radiologists collaboratively reviewed the X-ray images until a consensus was reached. The final 394 study population comprised 275 women and 119 men with a mean age of 64 years (range:18–96 years). The proportions of visually sharp reproduction of the endplates and trabecular structures did not differ significantly with regards to differences in exposure times between groups. The breathing technique groups had significantly higher proportions of blurring and motion artifacts (p < 0.001). However, adverse image outcomes (motions artifacts) were significantly lower in the 1-s exposure group. The suspended inspiration and breathing techniques performed equally well regarding visually sharp reproduction. However, the suspended inspiration technique was superior to the breathing technique. regarding adverse image outcomes, although the latter could be improved by using a shorter exposure time. The suspended inspiration and breathing technique appeared to perform at equal diagnostic levels. The suspended inspiration technique should be preferred due to its reduced risk of adverse image outcomes. The present study aimed to analyze the developmental trajectories of English achievement and exposure time through private education, utilizing univariate and multivariate latent growth curve analysis. This study used a subset of the Gyeonggi Education Panel Study data from 2012 to 2017. The results indicated consistent disparities in the growth of English achievement, depending on the student's proficiency levels at the starting point. In particular, the early exposure to private tutoring was significantly and closely related to the initial status and the growth trajectory of English achievement. When the sample was classified by urbanicity, the findings suggested that the gap in English achievement was likely to increase over time across the two regions, with a stronger correlation with private tutoring found in urban areas. These results underscore the need for educational intervention for students in less advantageous conditions, and they provide valuable pedagogical implications for teaching English in the Korean EFL context. As a high-performance composite material, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fiber-reinforced engineered cementitious composites (PVA-ECCs) are often used in sub-elevated temperature environments (< 200°C) for long-term service. However, the effect of exposure time in sub-elevated temperature on the performance of PVA-ECCs is not still clear. In this study, the properties of PVA-ECCs in sub-elevated temperature environments were examined, with emphasis on the effect of exposure time (1, 3, 6, and 9 h). Furthermore, the microstructure and tensile behavior of single PVA fibers exposed to a sub-elevated temperature environment was investigated. Results showed that PVA-ECCs have enhanced tensile ductility at different sub-elevated temperature exposure times below 100°C. However, the tensile properties of PVA-ECCs at 150°C showed a strain retraction phenomenon at 6 and 9 h. The strain-hardening characteristics of PVA-ECCs gradually disappeared with the increase of the sub-elevated temperature exposure time at 200°C. The results of thermogravimetric-differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC), Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and scanning electron microscope (SEM) revealed that the degradation of PVA fibers was accelerated by exposure time in sub-elevated temperature, which caused the reduction of mechanical properties of PVA-ECCs. Stepped‐wedge cluster randomized trials (SW‐CRTs) are typically analyzed assuming a constant intervention effect. In practice, the intervention effect may vary as a function of exposure time, leading to biased results. The estimation of time‐on‐intervention (TOI) effects specifies separate discrete intervention effects for each elapsed period of exposure time since the intervention was first introduced. It has been demonstrated to produce results with minimum bias and nominal coverage probabilities in the analysis of SW‐CRTs. Due to the design's staggered crossover, TOI effect variances are heteroskedastic in a SW‐CRT. Accordingly, we hypothesize that alternative CRT designs will be more efficient at modeling certain TOI effects. We derive and compare the variance estimators of TOI effects between a SW‐CRT, parallel CRT (P‐CRT), parallel CRT with baseline (PB‐CRT), and novel parallel CRT with baseline and an all‐exposed period (PBAE‐CRT). We also prove that the time‐averaged TOI effect variance and point estimators are identical to that of the constant intervention effect in both P‐CRTs and PB‐CRTs. We then use data collected from a hospital disinvestment study to simulate and compare the differences in TOI effect estimates between the different CRT designs. Our results reveal that the SW‐CRT has the most efficient estimator for the early TOI effect, whereas the PB‐CRT typically has the most efficient estimator for the long‐term and time‐averaged TOI effects. Overall, the PB‐CRT with TOI effects can be a more appropriate choice of CRT design for modeling intervention effects that vary by exposure time. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The current research extends previous laboratory investigations by investigating the effects of low-level laser irradiation (LLLI) on human blood plasma. Total bilirubin is of special importance because of its potential biostimulatory and modulatory actions. Objective: This study aims to analyze changes in total bilirubin content as a consequence of LLLI on human blood plasma. This study aims to determine how changes in exposure duration and laser wavelength affect these adjustments. Methodology: Plasma was isolated from a healthy adult donor's whole blood using the anticoagulant ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA). Plasma samples were exposed to LLLI at 375 and 650 nm for 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 min. Total bilirubin concentrations were measured both before and after irradiation using spectrophotometric analysis. The difference between 375 and 630 nm lasers was also investigated. Results: Five, 10, 15, 20, and 25 min of exposure to LLLI at 375 and 650 nm wavelengths resulted in statistically significant differences in total bilirubin content (p < 0.05, p < 0.001, p < 0.0001). There was no statistically significant difference in total bilirubin concentration between the 375 and 630 nm lasers. Conclusions: Human blood plasma total bilirubin levels were considerably lower following LLLI at 375 and 630 nm than controls. Multiple exposures provide the same results. These findings demonstrate the role of biostimulation by laser irradiation in blood plasma applications and suggest that low-level laser treatment may control total bilirubin levels, particularly at 375 and 630 nm. Objective: To identify the scientific evidence on the impacts caused by the use of screens during the COVID-19 pandemic in children and adolescents, raising reflections for future interventions with this public. Data source: This is an integrative literature review, conducted in the databases Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE), Literatura Latino-Americana e do Caribe em Ciências da Saúde (LILACS), Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), United States National Library of Medicine (PubMed), Scopus, Web of Science, and Embase, published from March 2020 to January 2022, in Portuguese, English and Spanish. Data synthesis: The search strategies allowed retrieving 418 articles, of which 218 were duplicates. The analysis of titles and abstracts resulted in the maintenance of 62 studies. Of these, 31 were excluded from the reading of the full text, since they did not clearly present the phenomenon investigated. Thirtyone were eligible, resulting in five categories: eye consequences; increased sedentary behavior and weight; change in eating habits; implications for sleep quality and impacts on mental health. Conclusions: The excessive use of screens during the pandemic led to numerous consequences for children and adolescents, with a higher incidence of visual damage, sedentary lifestyle, inadequate eating habit and increased weight gain, in addition to impaired sleep quality and mental health. This study provides subsidy for health professionals to carry out continuing education focused on this theme, and elaborate effective interventions for this public in this transition to the post-pandemic period. In this study, the effect of increasing exposure time on the microstructures, porosity, mechanical properties and corrosion behavior of selective laser melted sample Al-Si10-Mg powder was investigated. The samples were processed at the same power (375 W) and scan speed (2000 mm/s), but with increasing exposure time. Exposure time equal to 40, 50 and 60 µs was applied. The features of the analyzed samples show that with increasing exposure time, greater efficiency of the heat input was obtained, with a larger size of the melt pool and Si particles and lower porosity. Specifically, at the highest exposure time the melt pool showed an increase of 19% in width and 48% in depth, while the volume percentage of the voids decreased by 50% with respect to the lowest exposure time. Moreover, with the coarser microstructure being associated with a lower level of voids, the average hardness is similar for the analyzed samples. Corrosion resistance was evaluated, being one of the most important properties that may affect the service performance of Al-Si10-Mg alloy in the aerospace, marine and automotive industries. The potentiodynamic curves of the samples show that the voids occurrence is more significant with respect to the scale of the microstructure on corrosion behavior, with the sample processed at the highest exposure time being the more resistant to corrosion. Fish is a nutritionally rich product; however, it is easily contaminated by pathogenic microorganisms, such as Salmonella spp. Therefore, this study aimed to identify the best concentration of sodium hypochlorite (NaClO), exposure time, and water temperature that allow the most effective antimicrobial effect on the viable population of Salmonella spp. Thus, Salmonella Enteritidis ATCC 13076 and Salmonella Schwarzengrund were exposed to different time frames, ranging from 5 min to 38.5 min, temperatures between 5 and 38.5 °C, and NaClO concentrations ranging from 0.36 to 6.36 ppm, through a central composite rotational design experiment (CCRD). The results demonstrated that the ATCC strain exhibited a quadratic response to sodium hypochlorite when combined with exposure time, indicating that initial contact would already be sufficient for the compound's action to inhibit the growth of the mentioned bacteria. However, for S. Schwarzengrund (isolated directly from fish cultivated in aquaculture), both NaClO concentration and exposure time significantly influenced inactivation, following a linear pattern. This suggests that increasing the exposure time of NaClO could be an alternative to enhance Salmonella elimination rates in fish slaughterhouses. Thus, the analysis indicates that the Salmonella spp. strains used in in vitro experiments were sensitive to concentrations equal to or greater than the recommended ones, requiring a longer exposure time combined with the recommended NaClO concentration in the case of isolates from aquaculture. In this study, we utilized exposure time ( θ ¯ ) as a key metric to investigate water exchange and its spatiotemporal variations in the Northern South China Sea (NSCS). The Eulerian adjoint method and Lagrangian tracking were adopted to capture a comprehensive view of water exchange in coastal regions. Our findings reveal distinct spatial and seasonal variations in θ ¯ . Spatially, a long θ ¯ (exceeding 150 days) appears in the coastal region, and the largest values occur in the Beibu Gulf (300 days). Temporally, θ ¯ exhibits clear seasonal patterns across the extensive shelf area, influenced by the seasonal monsoon which induced seasonally reversing shelf current and results in symmetrical distribution patterns of θ ¯ across the board shelf during both winter and summer months. θ ¯ is longer in winter than in summer. The study also revealed pronounced vertical contrasts in cross-isobath transport over the NSCS shelf, though significant vertical variations in net exchange time were noted only in specific locations, including the northeast side of Hainan Island, the Beibu Gulf mouth, and along the west side of Taiwan Island. The Beibu Gulf emerged as a critical factor in the NSCS's water exchange dynamics in both seasons. In summer, it impacts more than 20% of the water exchange over adjacent areas, particularly through its westward transport against typical northeastward shelf currents. This highlights the combined effect of the westward spread of the Pearl River freshwater and the stable slope current on regional hydrodynamics. In winter, the Gulf's retention characteristics profoundly affected even distant areas, contributing to up to 50% of water exchange, showing its broad impact on the NSCS's water dynamics throughout the year. Previous studies of illusory conjunction (IC) mainly focused on alphabetic languages, while researchers have poorly understood the IC mechanism of Chinese words as an ideographic writing system. In the present study, we aimed to investigate the dynamic changes of IC effects for Chinese words under different stimulus exposure times and spatial arrangements. We conducted two experiments with a 3 (Condition: IC, non-IC-same, non-IC-different) × 3 (Exposure time: 38 ms, 88 ms, 138 ms) within-subject design. The results showed that in the IC condition, the two characters recombined regardless of exposure time as long as they could form an orthographically correct new word, demonstrating the universality of IC. In non-IC conditions, increasing exposure time decreased response time and significantly reduced error rate, indicating that attention played a decisive role in perceptual processing. The spatial arrangement had no impact on IC production. These findings support the feature confirmation account model, suggesting that attention modulates IC through top-down feature confirmation processes. These data expand an understanding of IC mechanisms, validate the role of attention in feature confirmation, and elucidate the inimitable mechanism of the Chinese word IC influenced by both low-level visual processing and high-level cognitive control. Accurately estimating the timing of pathogen exposure plays a crucial role in outbreak control for emerging infectious diseases, including the source identification, contact tracing, and vaccine research and development. However, since surveillance activities often collect data retrospectively after symptoms have appeared, obtaining accurate data on the timing of disease onset is difficult in practice and can involve "coarse" observations, such as interval or censored data. To address this challenge, we propose a novel likelihood function, tailored to coarsely observed data in rapid outbreak surveillance, along with an optimization method based on an ε$$ \varepsilon $$‐accelerated EM algorithm for faster convergence to find maximum likelihood estimates (MLEs). The covariance matrix of MLEs is also discussed using a nonparametric bootstrap approach. In terms of bias and mean‐squared error, the performance of our proposed method is evaluated through extensive numerical experiments, as well as its application to a series of epidemiological surveillance focused on cases of mass food poisoning. This article discusses a depth prediction model that takes advantage of rich interpretations. Profundity assessment is a basic interest for scene understanding and exact 3D reproduction. Latest methodologies with profound learning exploit mathematical designs of standard sharp pictures to foresee profundity maps. In any case, cameras can likewise deliver pictures with defocus obscure contingent upon the profundity of the articles and camera settings. Subsequently, these highlights might address a significant clue for figuring out how to foresee profundity. In this article, we postulate a full framework for single-picture profundity expectation by estimating the level of obscure w.r.t real profundity by bringing the picture in to concentrate just on pre-characterized focal point numbers. As a result, these characteristics may provide a crucial clue for studying to predict depth. These lens numbers indicate the distance at which the lens is currently focused. We also intend to know the influence of lens aperture numbers on the depth estimated. For this stated goal,We introduce a new data set that has 477 images taken in real-time using a DSLR (Digital Single-Lens Reflex). For indoor pictures, a lens is coupled with ground truth depth data provided with a laser distance meter.On this new platform, the strategy has been a framework that supports new data set and is proved that the predicted depth estimates correlate with ground truth by 98.7 percent with an 8.647 Std Error estimate. When compared to recent research on stereo vision and other non-triangulation techniques proposed so far, the depth estimations derived from the proposed model approximates the ground truth with RMSE of 0.05 and display around 98.7 percent correlation wrt ground truth data. Depth estimation strategy using a Single RGB cameras are proved efficient in computing depth estimates from blur with 99 percent accuracy, which is not in an earlier case. Our proposed model evidently works well with both sharp and blur images in computing depth estimates up to 3.3 meters range irrespective of whether an image is in focus or out of focus. Microplastics (MPs) are widely identified as emerging hazards causing considerable eco-toxicity in terrestrial ecosystems, but the impacts differ in different ecosystem functions among different chemical compositions, morphology, sizes, concentrations, and experiment duration. Given the close relationships and trade-offs between plant and soil systems, probing the “whole ecosystem” instead of individual functions must yield novel insights into MPs affecting terrestrial ecosystems. Here, a comprehensive meta-analysis was employed to reveal an unambiguous response of the plant-soil-microbial system to MPs. Results showed that in view of plant, soil, and microbial functions, the general response patterns of plant and soil functions to MPs were obviously opposite. For example, polyethylene (PE) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) MPs highly increased plant functions, while posed negative effects on soil functions. Polystyrene (PS) and biodegradable (Bio) MPs decreased plant functions, while stimulating soil functions. Additionally, low-density polyethylene (LDPE), PE, PS, PVC, Bio, and granular MPs significantly decreased soil microbial functions. These results clearly revealed that MPs alter the equilibrium of the plant-soil-microbial system. More importantly, our results further revealed that MPs tended to increase ecosystem multifunctionality, e.g., LDPE and PVC MPs posed positive effects on ecosystem multifunctionality, PE, PS, and Bio MPs showed neutral effects on ecosystem multifunctionality. Linear regression analysis showed that under low MPs size ( 5% w/w). These findings emphasize the importance of studying the effects of MPs on plant-soil-microbial systems and help us identify ways to reduce the eco-toxicity of MPs and maintain environmental safety in view of an ecology perspective.

Abstract: Rice seeds have a dormancy which is understood as resistance to pre- and post-harvest germination. Thus, the present study aims to evaluate periods and temperatures in the pre-drying of rice seeds (cultivar IRGA 431 CL) to overcome dormancy. An experiment was carried out in a completely randomized design at the Didactic and Seed Research Laboratory, at the Federal University of Santa Maria. Three lots of the cultivar IRGA 431 CL were used. For the present study, temperatures of 35, 40, 45, 50 and 55 °C in a forced-air circulation oven were used to overcome seed dormancy. At each temperature the seeds remained for periods of 24, 48, 72, 96, 120, 144 and 168 h. First count, germination, and seedling root and shoot lengths were evaluated in the experiment. The data obtained were subjected to analysis of variance and compared by response surface. Temperature between 41 and 44 °C for a period of 95 h is more indicated to overcome dormancy in seeds of the IRGA 431 CL cultivar in a forced-air circulation oven.

In the present study, we examined the effect of extreme temperatures on different life stages of Ephestia kuehniella Zeller (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae). The individuals were exposed to different temperatures ranging between 5 and −18 °C for cold treatment, and between 30 and 55 °C for heat treatment, and different exposure intervals, ranging from minutes to days. Complete control was achieved at −10 and −15 °C for cold treatment and 50 and 55 °C for heat treatment at all exposure intervals. Considering the efficacy of extreme temperatures for the control of E. kuehniella, our study provides specific temperature exposure modules that can be effective for the control of this species.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The increasing population and anthropogenic activities in coastal areas affects the presence of mercury in coastal waters. Therefore, this study aims to 1) assess the ecological and human health risk of mercury contamination in coastal water; 2) analyze the effectiveness of polymer sulfur as an absorbent for mercury.METHODS: A total of fifteen water samples were obtained from the coastal areas of Makassar and were analyzed using cold vapor atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Ecological and human health risks were assessed using established assessment methods by the United States Environmental Protection Agency. The uncertainty and sensitivity tests for independent variables in human health risk were assessed by the Monte Carlo Simulation method. Furthermore, polymer sulfur was used as a promising technique for capturing and reducing the level of mercury in the water column.FINDINGS: The results showed that the mean concentration of mercury was very high and exceeded the values established by the World Health Organization, United States of Environmental Protection Agency, and Indonesian National Standards, indicating elevated risks to the ecosystem and human health in the future. Additionally, the Monte Carlo simulation model revealed that the non-carcinogenic risk caused by mercury exposure in adults and children was greater than 1 (Total Hazard Index>1), indicating the health adverse effects for both receptors. From the simulation results, the concentration of mercury at 23.3% and exposure time of 21.3 percent were the most influential and dominant factors in non-cancer risk for adults and children, respectively. Therefore, mercury concentration needs to be reduced in coastal areas. The application of polymer sulfur is effective for reducing mercury concentration in water with a percentage reduction range of 39 – 100 percent and p-value of 0.001.CONCLUSION: Mercury contamination of coastal water in Makassar city poses ecological and health risks. The application of polymer sulfur is an effective way for reducing mercury in the water column.

A stepped‐wedge cluster randomized trial (CRT) is a unidirectional crossover study in which timings of treatment initiation for clusters are randomized. Because the timing of treatment initiation is different for each cluster, an emerging question is whether the treatment effect depends on the exposure time, namely, the time duration since the initiation of treatment. Existing approaches for assessing exposure‐time treatment effect heterogeneity either assume a parametric functional form of exposure time or model the exposure time as a categorical variable, in which case the number of parameters increases with the number of exposure‐time periods, leading to a potential loss in efficiency. In this article, we propose a new model formulation for assessing treatment effect heterogeneity over exposure time. Rather than a categorical term for each level of exposure time, the proposed model includes a random effect to represent varying treatment effects by exposure time. This allows for pooling information across exposure‐time periods and may result in more precise average and exposure‐time‐specific treatment effect estimates. In addition, we develop an accompanying permutation test for the variance component of the heterogeneous treatment effect parameters. We conduct simulation studies to compare the proposed model and permutation test to alternative methods to elucidate their finite‐sample operating characteristics, and to generate practical guidance on model choices for assessing exposure‐time treatment effect heterogeneity in stepped‐wedge CRTs. Biochar holds great promise for carbon sequestration but is restricted by high costs. Here, we introduced the water–fire coupled method and developed a mineral coating technique for biochar production from paulownia waste (Paulownia fortune). Exposure time and mineral (lime) coating were assessed for their impacts on biochar properties. The former had a dominant adverse effect on carbon content, specific surface area, and carbon capture capacity of the biochar. In contrast, the latter alleviated the adverse impact on carbon capture capacity and specific surface area, the highest being 67.07% and 176.0 m2 g−1, respectively. Without a mineral coating (B), biochar functional groups reduced at the exposure time of 0–4 min (-COOH from 0.50 to 0.19 mol/kg, phenolic-OH from 0.43 to 0.14 mol/kg). In contrast, a mineral coating (B-Ca) increased -COOH from 0.25 to 0.83 mol/kg and phenolic-OH from 0.19 to 0.72 mol/kg. The pyrolysis process with a mineral coating is conceptualized as (1) wrapping the paulownia branch with the mineral, (2) enabling oxygen-limited pyrolysis inside the branch, and (3) ending the pyrolysis with water to form biochar. Ca2+ played multiple functions of ion bridging, complexation, and reduction of COx gas formation, thus enhancing the carbon capture capacity (the ratio of C in biomass converted to biochar) to 67%. Whole body vibration is one of the main causes of musculoskeletal disorders of drivers. The purpose of this study was to investigate the allowable exposer time, care limit, and driver response to the vibrations of the seat of tractor. A three-way accelerometer was used to measure the vibration of the seat of a four-wheel drive ITM 475 Tractor based on the ISO 2631-1 international vibration standard. The studied factors were evaluated engine rotational speed, gear ratio, and road. The obtained data were analyzed through a factorial experiment based on completely randomized design. The results showed that effects of the main factors and those of their interactions on the total vibration emitted from the tractor seat were significant at 1% probability level. The minimum allowable exposure time and care limit were 1.16 and 0.14 h, respectively, that was in very uncomfortable range. The effect of engine rotational speed on the driver allowable exposure time to vibration is more than that of shifting gear. The results of the present study are useful to reduce whole body vibration and increase exposer time of the tractor driver through adjusting suitable driving conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The results of studying the effect of thermal-treatment modes and finishing conditions on the rupture strength of woven-glass tapes and fiberglass fabrics and electrical insulation manufactured from them are reported. It is shown that the complete removal of the oiling agent "wax emulsion" from the surface of glass tapes is attained after stepwise thermal treatment at 250–400°C, but the rupture strength decreases by 80% in this case. The finishing of glass tapes with 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane after the technical oiling agent is completely removed restores their rupture strength to the level of 35–40% of the initial value (before removing the wax-emulsion oiling agent) and makes it possible to create electrical insulation with water resistance to 1100 h at 23°C and to 7 h at 80°C. The Hwangdo tidal flat is an intertidal landform located in Cheonsu Bay, Taean-gun, Chungcheongnam-do, on the west coast of Korea. The topographical characteristics of the semi-enclosed bay on the eastern side of the study area include waterways, sandbars, small islands, and tidal flats. In this study, data were acquired from tide gauges installed on the Hwangdo Bridge, and the height of the ellipsoid was measured using a real-time kinematics global positioning system (RTK-GPS). Digital elevation model (DEM) using Matrice 300 drone data were also acquired after processing. The geochemical sediment characteristics in the study area were analyzed, together with tidal-flat exposure-time characteristics based on environmental factors. Sediment data (n = 107) collected from October 25 to 28, 2022 (Korean local time) were used to classify sediment particles according to Folk and Ward (1957). Sedimentary facies ranged from coarse sand (sand:mud ratio = 9:1) to sandy silt (sZ) followed by muddy sand (mS) and slightly gravelly sandy mud ((g)sM). Total organic carbon (TOC) in the surface sediments was also characterized based on a particle-size analysis. The mean change in tidal height measured at Hwangdo Bridge during the sampling period was ~7.53 m (minimum: −3.86 m, maximum: +3.67 m). Based on the Boryeong's sea level measurement tide data in 2022, the tidal area in the drone images ranged from 6.362 m2 (0.006 km2) at DEM +4.0 to 4,841,078 m2 (4.841 km2) at DEM −4.0 m, indicating an increase in the tidal-flat area according to the tidal level of up to ~800-fold. The daily average exposure time was 9.0 h (minimum: 1.5 h, maximum: 17.9 h). Based on the results of multivariate analysis using exposure times and a geochemical dataset, four groups were identified: upper, middle, and lower intertidal zones and regions with a relatively high organic-matter concentration. A determination of the main characteristics of the Hwangdo tidal flat according to their spatial distribution showed that, among various environmental factors, changes in the sand or clay sediment composition were determined by community factors. The results of this study demonstrate the four statistically processed groups of marine environmental characteristics in the Hwangdo tidal flats. Changes in sedimentary patterns, rather than in the exposure time, accounted for the differences in the sediment compositions of the upper, middle, and lower stations, a response that is expected to continue. Acid mine drainage (AMD), resulting from mining activities, poses a significant environmental concern. It adversely affects metallic materials, particularly carbon steel composites used in mining machinery and structures. Highly acidic and oxidizing compounds like sulfuric acid and ferric ions cause corrosion, iron oxide formation, and hydrogen gas release, which degrade carbon steel. AMD also alters the solvent's properties, dissolving heavy metals and contaminants, and intensifying the environmental impact of mining. A 30-week experiment immersed metal plates in AMD to study its effects. Weekly observations of the plates and solvent were made. The plate measurements and physicochemical data were analyzed using graphical–statistical analysis and fuzzy logic techniques to assess the data quality and identify errors. The results reveal consistent findings with prior studies, such as material degradation with weight loss and alterations in acid drainage media, including increased pH and total dissolved solids (TDS). These changes in the solvent characteristics stem from the dissolution of metal ions from corroded surfaces, reacting with the acid solution. Overall, this study discusses the effects of AMD (acid mine drainage) on metallic materials and emphasizes the significance of monitoring and reducing the environmental consequences of mining activities. The features of the analyzed samples show that with increasing exposure time, greater efficiency of the heat input was obtained, with a larger size of the melt pool and Si particles and lower porosity. Specifically, at the highest exposure time the melt pool showed an increase of 19% in width and 48% in depth, while the volume percentage of the voids decreased by 50% with respect to the lowest exposure time. Moreover, with the coarser microstructure being associated with a lower level of voids, the average hardness is similar for the analyzed samples. Corrosion resistance was evaluated, being one of the most important properties that may affect the service performance of Al-Si10-Mg alloy in the aerospace, marine and automotive industries. The potentiodynamic curves of the samples show that the voids occurrence is more significant with respect to the scale of the microstructure on corrosion behavior, with the sample processed at the highest exposure time being the more resistant to corrosion. The experimental techniques used in the present study were Optical Microscope (OM), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), hardness and X-Ray Computed Tomography.
