We investigate the association between global value chain (GVC) integration and export competitiveness for 34 Indonesian industries from 2007 to 2020. Using panel unit root, panel cointegration, panel long-run estimator, and panel granger causality, we find the following key findings: First, we find that GVC integration and export competitiveness are cointegrated or share a long-term association. Second, we find that GVC integration favorably impacts export competitiveness over time. Third, we confirm the existence of a unidirectional causal link between GVC integration and export competitiveness. Fourth, we also discover results linked with the kind of GVC integration (forward, backward, and two-sided) and the industry type (manufacturing, services, labor-intensive and capital-intensive industries). These findings aid policymakers in the formulation of suitable measures to enhance GVC integration to strengthen the export competitiveness of Indonesian industries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the context of current crises, the competitiveness of Moldova's agri-food exports emerges as a primary topic of interest, given that they account for over 50% of the nation's total exports. This study investigates the competitiveness of Moldova's agri-food exports compared to three EU candidate countries - Georgia, Moldova, and Ukraine - and two EU member states - Poland and Romania. Using the Balassa Index, it analyzes the comparative advantages of these nations in the agri-food sector, with particular attention to the sub-categories of food products and vegetables. The results indicate a high competitiveness of Moldova in the exports of food products and vegetables, while the category of animal products shows comparative disadvantages. The study contributes to the literature by highlighting the dynamics of comparative advantages and recommends focusing on the development of the agri-food processing industry to improve the external trade structure. The research emphasizes the need for a strategic approach in adapting and integrating national agricultural and food systems into global value chains to maximize economic benefits in a changing regional and global landscape. This study investigates the pivotal role of technological innovation in enhancing the export competitiveness of high-tech products in China, analyzing its interplay with industrial upgrading. Theoretically, it contributes to the understanding of how technological innovation affects high-tech product markets, offering a novel product-centric perspective distinct from traditional industry-focused views. Set against China's shift toward a dual circulation development paradigm, the research utilizes a panel regression model to analyze data from 30 Chinese provinces, cities, and autonomous regions from 2011 to 2021. The findings underscore the significant positive impact of technological innovation on export competitiveness, with variances noted across Eastern, Central, and Western regions. The study reveals that technological innovation primarily influences the global competitiveness of high-tech products through industrial upgrading. Policy recommendations emphasize strengthening technological innovation, enhancing education and government support, leveraging regional strengths, and achieving a balance between internal innovation capabilities and market openness. This study examines the trade relationship between Turkey and Uzbekistan, particularly in sesame exports, with the aim of strengthening Uzbekistan's competitiveness. Based on the theory of comparative advantage and using key indicators such as the Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA) Index, the Revealed Symmetric Comparative Advantage (RSCA) Index, and the Normal Revealed Comparative Advantage (NRCA) Index, this study highlights the robust competitiveness of Turkey in exporting agricultural machinery designed specifically for sesame production. Through a comprehensive analysis of these indices, the study highlights Turkey's particular strength in this sector, sheds light on its comparative advantage and emphasises the country's strategic position in the global market for sesame-related agricultural machinery. However, Uzbekistan currently lacks competitiveness in sesame exports. The study underlines the key role of effective technology transfer, especially in machinery exports from Turkey, in improving Uzbekistan's position. Econometric models show the significant impact of exchange rates and domestic demand on Uzbekistan's sesame exports. The study's findings highlight ways to improve the efficiency of agricultural machinery exports between the two countries. Competitiveness relates to an economy's ability to produce products efficiently and effectively, enabling it to compete in domestic and global markets. It encompasses productivity, innovation, quality, cost-efficiency, and market access. Competitive economies are more likely to attract investment, create jobs, and achieve higher levels of economic development. Competitiveness rankings, primarily, provide opportunities for benchmarking, practical policy guidance, attractive investment, global comparison, and evaluation. This study was conducted to examine Turkiye's export structure from 2001 to 2021 in the context of the Harmonized Commodity Description and Coding System. The aim is to determine and compare its competitiveness using the Revealed Symmetric Comparative Advantage Index (RSCA). Data used to calculate the RSCA values is taken from TradeMap, the database of the International Trade Centre (ITC). Comparison was made with Turkiye's highest trading partners, the countries with the largest share of Turkiye's exports. Measuring Turkiye 's competitiveness in the products it exports and allocating its resources (capital, labor force, raw materials, etc.) accordingly will help Turkiye to achieve global significance in the long run. Therefore, in this study, Turkiye 's export competitiveness is compared with the countries with which Turkiye does the most trade. While Turkiye had RSCA in 37 products in 2001, it increased to 45 products in 2021. Similar to Podoba et al. (2021), product groups are categorized according to observable trends in RSCA values. Agricultural transformation in Poland and Bulgaria, both characterized by unique farm structures compared to the old EU, has been a policy challenge for the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) even before integration. Eurostat and Comtrade data over 2000 to 2016/2017 have been used to analyse agricultural restructuring at farm level, relating it to growth trends in agro-processing units and eventually to competitiveness in agricultural exports and trade specialization. CAP payment instruments, especially DPs have influenced farm restructuring, farming practices and income in both Poland and Bulgaria. Distinctive farm structures have evolved that have caused polarization and influenced productivity. Large farms are the main beneficiaries of farm aids and this polarization continues in the agro-industry sector as well. Multinational agro-firms, though insignificant in number are found to monopolise agro-based production in almost all the food processing sub-sectors in both the member countries. In terms of trade competitiveness indices, export specialization of agri-commodities has reduced in both members over 2000-2017, shares of processed commodities in exports with specialization have increased for Poland while Bulgaria has gained in medium-processing capabilities. For policy implications, small farms need to form producer groups and coordinate with small producers to increase both farm and firm level productivity. The subsidiarity principle of new CAP can be utilized by member states to facilitate this.

This study compares and analyses the export competitiveness of Nepal and India adopting a multi-dimensional framework to show export competitiveness in the industry. This research also emphasises the relative market importance of Indian and Nepalese industries to each other's marketplaces. To determine the export competitiveness of 97 industries in India and Nepal from 2010 to 2021, a multidimensional framework was used that takes into account industry specialisation, industry growth, and market size. According to the results of our study, approximately 68 per cent of Indian industries are dynamic, indicating that they are expanding, and 42 per cent of them are global, making them more specialised and export-oriented. However, the majority of Nepal's industries (72 per cent) are static, and their export growth rate is less than the average growth rate for the world. In addition, the research analyses realistic export opportunities for Indian and Nepalese industries in each other's markets based on relative market importance. Policymakers, government representatives, business executives, and industry leaders in both countries may use this study to focus their limited resources on the industries that could benefit from them the most. Although export competitiveness research is extensive and contemporary, it lacks some prospective stud areas, such as cross-country analyses of various industries. The paper deals with the analysis of Serbian export competitiveness in regards to the EU market in the period between 2012 and 2021, using the location quotient and dynamic shift-share analysis, which breaks down changes in exports into three components: the national, the industrial, and the regional component. The results show that EU countries are suitable destinations for Serbian products. Also, products from several Serbian sectors are attractive in the European market. The location quotient shows that the most important export destinations are Bulgaria, Croatia, Romania, and Slovenia. The dynamic shift-share analysis results show that there was an increase in the competitiveness of Serbian exports to the European Union market in the observed period, mostly thanks to the national component. India ranks second position in the exports of textiles and garments with a global share of 6.90 per cent. The export of silk products from India worth Rs.1848.96 crores in 2021-22, which accounted for 0.04 per cent of country's total export earnings. This paper examines the trade performance of India's silk and silk products and its competitors by employing compound annual growth rate, Cuddy-Della Valle Index, Markov chain analysis and Revealed Comparative Advantage using the quantity of exports and their earnings during 2011-12 to 2021-22. The silk products exported were natural silk yarns, fabrics, made-ups, readymade garments, silk carpets and silk waste. Among the exports, silk fabrics and made-ups including ready-made garments constitute highest (80.79 %) value followed by silk waste (11.18 %). The overall export value of silk and silk goods have recorded a significant negative growth of -4.69 per cent. During 2021, China has a major share of the global trade with 44.23 per cent followed by Vietnam (27.45 %). USA was one of the most stable markets among the major importers of Indian silk and silk goods as reflected by the higher probability of retention at 75.16 per cent. The Revealed Comparative Advantage index of silk waste was highest during 2021 with the value of 14.02. The Revealed Comparative Advantage index of woven fabrics was found to be decreasing over the period of time and in the year 2022, it was 2.50 whereas silk yarn, silk waste and yarn spun from silk waste showed increasing trend. Strategic planning of exports of silk goods to selective markets based on comparative advantage and product diversification could be the way ahead to mark India's role in world exports. The agricultural sector contributes to the national economy by engaging in export activities within the global market. Conversely, the rapid development of the Internet has greatly impacted output production and has introduced heightened competitiveness among various countries. This study aims to examine the impact of Internet-related indicators on the competitive standing of agri-food industries on a global scope. These indicators are represented by user engagement, infrastructure availability, and security. The panel regression analysis focused on 126 countries from 2010 to 2020. The findings reveal that Internet infrastructure and security positively affect the competitiveness of agri-food exports. However, the indicator related to Internet users exhibits a negative impact. There is a change in competitiveness structure from enhancing the Internet indicator to 50%. After simulation, we found that 80 countries have a positive value of RSCA. It is lower than the actual value of RSCA in 89 countries. This study concluded that developing countries still have better opportunities to increase their agri-food export competitiveness than developed countries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The digital economy is an important driving force for the high-quality development of the manufacturing industry. This paper uses 2013–2019 manufacturing panel data to empirically test the impact of digital economic growth on China's manufacturing export competitiveness. The results show that, first, the degree of integration of manufacturing and digital economy in the eastern region is higher than that in the central and western regions. Second, the development of the digital economy has indeed had a significant positive impact on the export competitiveness of China's manufacturing industry. Third, the digital economy has different impacts on the export competitiveness of manufacturing industries in different industries and regions. Based on the findings, some suggestions are made to further enhance the export competitiveness of China's manufacturing industry, such as paying attention to the development of digital infrastructure, optimizing the mode of integration of the manufacturing sector and the digital economy, and enhancing international collaboration in digital technology innovation.

Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) finds itself at a turning point in its development, with a focus on its path towards European Union (EU) membership. Since 2015, BiH has made significant progress by signing the Stabilization and Association Agreement with the EU, adopting the Reform Agenda for 2018-2020, and obtaining permission to export dairy products to the EU. However, questions arise about BiH's export competitiveness and readiness for EU accession. Analyzing BiH's export competitiveness compared to CEFTA (Central European Free Trade Agreement) member countries is crucial. Despite a similar per capita Gross Domestic Product (GDP), BiH faces challenges in maintaining competitiveness in that market. While there is a lack of research on CEFTA beyond 2012, there are indications that member countries prioritize trade relations with the EU over intra-CEFTA trade due to their desire to join the EU. In conclusion, BiH must work on improving its export structure and diversifying production to achieve competitiveness within CEFTA and fulfill its goal of EU accession. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, I examine the support of German businesses—especially exporters—for the Economic and Monetary Union before 1999. I argue that the support of the German export sector for the EMU depends crucially on its implications for export competitiveness. If exporters conclude that the EMU will improve their competitive position, they will likely support monetary integration. In contrast, other business actors should be more skeptical about the prospects of a European currency union. I therefore expect that the major export enterprises will use their dominant position in the business community to assert their interests. The empirical analysis is based on enterprise surveys and a detailed qualitative study of the role of export interests in Germany's peak industrial association. I close by discussing how my results provide important insights for various scholarly debates, including the debate on Germany's role in the Eurozone. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Based on the analysis of rice planting and export development in Heilongjiang Province in 2013 - 2021, this paper comprehensively used three export competitiveness analysis methods, namely, trade competitiveness index, revealed comparative advantage (RCA) analysis and international market share analysis, to compare the four major rice exporters in the world and the three major rice export provinces and cities in China. Besides, it evaluated the rice export competitiveness of Heilongjiang Province from multiple perspectives. It analyzed the reasons for low competitiveness in terms of export product structure, export market structure, production and processing technology, and brand building. Finally, it is recommended to clarify the positioning of rice export quality and take more measures to ensure product quality; improve the level of industrialization of rice production and processing, and extend the rice industry chain; develop diversified rice export markets and improve export flexibility; adhere to the principle of "opening the door and going out", expand the international popularity of high-quality brands, so as to enhance the rice export competitiveness of Heilongjiang Province. On the basis of CEPII-BACI trade data from 2001 to 2018, this study examined the impact of technology innovation on the duration of China's manufacturing export competitiveness by using the discrete time model. Results showed that the innovation behaviour can effectively improve the duration of export competitiveness of the manufacturing industry. An increase in the innovation input by 1% can reduce the risk of decline in manufacturing export competitiveness by 9.3%, and an increase in innovation intensity by 1% can increase the duration of manufacturing export competitiveness by 6.4%. The purpose of this paper is to examine the influence of trade infrastructure components: port infrastructure, telephone usage and electricity on the export competitiveness of firms in the East African Community (EAC). The study adopted the structural gravity model and the Poisson Pseudo Maximum Likelihood (PPML), a nonlinear estimation method that was applied in STATA on balanced panel data for the period of 2007 to 2018. Data was obtained from World Bank International Trade Centre (ITC) and World Bank development indicators. Results show that telephone usage, electricity and port infrastructure are positive and significant predictors of export competitiveness in East African Community partner states. The results of this study show that electricity usage, telephone usage and port infrastructure are important contributors to improving export competitiveness in the EAC. There is a need to examine the intricate nature of the EAC economy in order to further this study's findings. The EAC partner states need to embrace deep integration by removing the behind-the-border trade barriers, in addition to other trade restrictions, to create a common economic space among member states. This will further shrink the delivery time and the tracking and tracing of exports hence improving the competitiveness of EAC exports within the region and outside. Also, common and harmonized economic policies and regulations can be implemented through mutual recognition agreements where countries agree to recognize one another's conformity assessments. The paper deals with the analysis of Serbian export competitiveness, i.e. the identification of comparative advantages and the degree of specialization in international trade from 2011 to 2020. The Standard International Trade Classification (SITC Rev. 4) was used to classify the sectors. Results were obtained by calculating the RCA, RSCA and TSI indices and constructing a competitiveness matrix. The results show that Serbia achieves comparative advantages in several industries, but their export share in total exports of Serbia is extremely low. On the other hand, in most sectors, which dominate in total exports with their share, there is no comparative advantage. Also, the results of the TSI are discouraging and show that Serbia does not specialize in exports or that its economy is predominantly dependent on imports. In addition, the competitiveness matrix, which presents export growth rates in Serbia and the world, shows that all sectors are promising and have accelerated growth. Based on the analysis of all indicators, it was concluded that Serbia has low export competitiveness with the identification of industries that have the potential for improvement.

Trade is at the centre of Europe’s model of economic prosperity and competitiveness. As stated in the new Trade Policy Strategy set out by the European Commission (2021), the trade policy has a key role to play in the recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. Meanwhile, this role was emphasised even better by the effects derived from the war in Ukraine. As the pandemic hit in 2020, the growth drivers of the EU’s economy relented, among which the external trade, putting million jobs at risk and leading to rise in unemployment and to depression of economic activity, while many companies had to close down. Competitiveness is a term which increased in significance in the last few decades. Trade competitiveness and, especially, export competitiveness is one of the most valuable variables a country must improve in order to increase its overall competitive position among nations and also the welfare of its citizens. The export statistics of many EU’s economies changed since the COVID-19 crisis and later, the war stroke. The research questions this paper addresses are: what is the extent of these changes in which sectors? Have they come to an end or the process of recovery has already started within the EU? What effects has the war in Ukraine onto the EU exports competitiveness? Are there any chances for the EU to maintain its exports competitiveness after these crises? What is to be one and what measures to be taken to recover? After introductory theoretical remarks and a brief literature review followed by a survey of various techniques to measure export competitiveness, the paper shifts its focus on statistical data and analyse how much damage has the pandemic and nowadays, the war caused to the EU’s export competitiveness, and which EU Member States were the most affected, based on statistical data analysis and other various indicators.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine the influence of innovation indicators: Internet usage, patent rights, innovation in exporting countries and innovation in the importing country on the export competitiveness of firms in the East African Community (EAC). Design/methodology/approach – The study adopted the structural gravity model and the Poisson Pseudo Maximum Likelihood a nonlinear estimation method that was applied in STATA on balanced panel data from 2007 to 2018. Data were obtained from World Bank International Trade Center and World Bank development indicators. Findings – Results show that innovation in the importing country, innovation in the exporting country and patent rights of exports are positive and significant predictors of export competitiveness in developing countries. While Internet usage is an insignificant predictor in the EAC. Research limitations/implications – There is a need to examine the complicated nature of the EAC economy to further this study's findings. Practical implications – Exporting countries need to take deeper reforms as regards structural transformation to enable firms to integrate into the Global Value Chains (GVCs) to enable them to increase their productivity by reviewing the existing policies to match the changes in the market. Originality/value – This study explains the complex dynamic interactions of technological innovation indicators in the EAC using quantitative data and that this interaction has an effect on the export competitiveness in import-oriented countries with less harmonization in their trade policies.

The composition and share of export items from a country change over time. Individual exporting companies take firm-level actions to keep up their market share. A relative (to the point of reference) and comparative (compared to other exportable goods) advantage index for an export item can aid decision-making at the country and company levels. Present literature shows less reference to the existence of such an index. The popular Balassa’s revealed comparative advantage (B-RCA) index measures the comparative strength of a product at any given period. However, this method and its variants are time stationary and not directly applicable for sectors, i.e., groups of commodities with the same first four digits of the HS Code. Sector-level RCA aids in identifying the country's comparative advantage over the sector over time. For a given set of products, the paper uses many partner countries and a manyproduct trade approach. This paper suggests two indices to reflect the dynamic RCA. It suggests calculating the ratio of the Balassa index for each product for the current period and reference period – the relative revealed comparative advantage (RRCA); proposes geometric aggregation of these ratios to get a composite RCA (CRCA) index for a country.

Abstract India embraced open trade policy from 1990s onwards, following the Economic Reforms of 1991, by reducing import tariffs and opening up Indian markets to competition. The expectation from this reform was that the Indian industry would be more competitive. By mid 2000s, India was not only an open economy, however, it was on its way to effect across-the-board reductions/elimination of tariffs and other non-tariff barriers by formalising FTAs and CEPAs several prominent trade partners. Although, trade to GDP ratio has increased from 13% in 1990 to 27% in 2019-20, import dependence of India, especially on China has increased manifold. The paper has delved into the trade policy evolution that led India to open up and increase its presence in the global trade market. However, an industry level Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA) analysis reveals that the loss in export competitiveness in six industries at NIC 4-digit level, since 2000-01 to 2017-18, retarded the growth potential in exports that India could have claimed with a phased opening up of trade. These industries were mainly in the textiles and apparel sector and gems and jewellery sector. The industry level factors such as lower productivity growth, higher unit labour costs and presence of low levels of technology are prominent factors that explain the export performance of India that we observe. This study aims to explore the shrimp export competitiveness of Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam time spanning from 1990 to 2019. However, emphasizing Bangladesh as a case country, this research looks into the factors influencing shrimp export competitiveness taking into account macroeconomic and policy variables. To do so, we used the recently developed Revealed Symmetric Comparative Advantage (RSCA) index to quantify export competitiveness, while a novel dynamic autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) simulation approach to determine the factors driving shrimp export competitiveness. The findings show that all of the aforementioned countries seem to have some degree of shrimp export competitiveness during the study period, whereas Chain has entirely lost its export competitiveness after 2004. However, Bangladesh's shrimp export competitiveness has dipped marginally in recent years, despite continuous growth in competitor countries such as India, Indonesia, and Vietnam. Further, economic globalization, institutional quality, trade openness, number of trade agreements, and trade freedom all have a favorable impact on Bangladesh's shrimp export competitiveness in the long-run, whereas the international or exporting price of shrimp has a detrimental influence in short-and long-run. This study examines the influence of export promotion programs (EPPs) in Indonesia on companies' resources, capabilities, strategies, and competitiveness, and whether such programs positively impact export performance and finances. Using data from 204 exporting companies in Indonesia and the structural equation model for analysis, this study finds that participation in EPPs reinforces the organizational resources and exporting capabilities needed for developing successful export strategies. This allows for the creation of competitive advantages in export costs, product superiority, and effective distribution, which in turn increases performance in terms of market share and finance. The results also indicate that the effect of EPPs is relatively more significant on small companies and those with more export experience. They confirm that EPPs have the most significant impact on firms’ resources and capabilities, and that assistance programs that aim to improve organizational capabilities are needed to enhance marketing strategies. While innovative capabilities and business intelligence offer great potential to support export performance, EPP-type assistance programs have not been adequately developed in Indonesia.

This article presents a dataset of 204 exporting firms surveyed in Indonesia to assess the internationalization and participation of enterprises in government export promotion programs (EPP). Under a resource-based view (RBV) approach, the dataset includes four dimensions of government export assistance programs, three dimensions capturing organizational resources and organizational capabilities. In addition, the survey collects data on the firms’ export marketing strategies, competitiveness, and market performance. Firm-level characteristics are identified to reveal the organizational characteristics, the companies’ strategic features, and market orientation. The dataset also includes obstacles the companies face across dimensions and sub-components with critical attributes. In total, the dataset includes 19 constructs of questions with 180 variables. The dataset can be used to test the firms’ competitive advantage in export markets, assess the role of government programs in the firms’ export performance, examine export barriers as predictors, mediators, and moderators of export performance, etc. The dataset can be used under different theoretical approaches, i.e., RBV, internationalization process, or institutional theories.

The agricultural sector in India is still the largest contributor to the Indian economy, providing direct and indirect jobs to the majority of Indians. Despite accounting for 18.8 percent of the country’s gross value added, this sector has not made much of a difference in terms of India’s agricultural exports. The current research paper attempts to provide an insight into the competitiveness of Indian agricultural exports over the past twenty-one years and found that under the Harmonized System of Agricultural Commodities classification, the export competitiveness of India has either stagnated or deteriorated, leading to an ominous sign for the Indian agriculture sector. Had there been an appropriate policy to boost Indian agricultural exports, this sector could bring income to farmers and open new avenues abroad? Outcome of the results desperately call for a paradigm policy shift in Indian agriculture as far as export competitiveness is concerned. Refined marketing policy in the light of global needs is the need of the hour. India needs to enhance the “skill before sale” capabilities of the farmers to make them aware of global needs. This paper investigates the economic relationship between logistics performance and export competitiveness based on the iceberg transport cost model and conducts further empirical analysis according to China's LPI. It finds that the higher the efficiency of logistics and transport, the lower the transportation costs coefficient per unit distance; when logistics and transportation costs decrease, foreign demand for domestic goods increases, as does the export value expressed in domestic prices. Additionally, Spearman's rank correlation method is used to analyze the relationship between logistics performance index and export level, indicating that logistics performance index has a positive rank correlation with the export level at a significant level of 1%. Moreover, a case study on China' LPI supports the conclusion derived from the theoretical analysis, and conducive countermeasures are put forward. This research confirms the positive correlation between logistics performance and export competitiveness and proposes specific solutions to enhancing the logistics capabilities of other developing countries.
