Introduction: Coronavirus Disease-2019 (COVID-19) impacts multiple organs like the kidneys, heart, and liver, but primarily affects the respiratory system, leading to symptoms such as cough with sputum production, fever, and in severe cases, respiratory failure. Research on Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS)-Coronavirus-2 (CoV-2) has revealed impairments in lung function during the early recovery phase following COVID-19 infection. The aim is to understand the virus’s impact and identify any obstructive, restrictive, or mixed pulmonary alterations in medical professionals six weeks after recovery. Aim: To assess Pulmonary Function Tests (PFTs) six weeks after COVID-19 recovery in health science students at a medical college in North Karnataka. Materials and Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in the Department of Physiology at Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College in North Karnataka, India, from January 2021 to December 2021. A total of 155 COVID-19-recovered health science students were included, and their anthropometry, physiological parameters, and pulmonary parameters were recorded. Background: Chronic empyema thoracis is a debilitating illness with high morbidity and, and is seen among all age groups. Our objective was to review all cases of chronic empyema thoracis treated by lung decortication and highlight the outcome. Methods: 86 patients with chronic empyema thoracis were admitted and managed in our thoracic surgery unit who underwent surgery of lung decortication through posterolateral thoracotomy. Results: Forced expiratory volume in 1sec (FEV1) and forced vital capacity (FVC) were significantly increased in postoperative than preoperative. There had significant improvement in the pre, post values of the lung volume on the diseased side and both lungs. Conclusions: Lung decortication is followed by a significant improvement in spirometric parameters and CT findings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Results: The mean age of the participants was 21.73±3.04 years. The Mean±Standard Devaiation (SD) of Forced Vital Capacity (FVC) (L), Forced Expiratory Volume (FEV) at the end of one second (L), Peak Expiratory Flow Rate (L), forced mid expiratory flow 25-75 (L/s), forced mid expiratory flow 25% (L/s), forced mid expiratory flow 50% (L/s), forced mid expiratory flow 75% (L/s), Inspiratory Reserve Volume (IRV) (L), Expiratory Reserve Volume (ERV) (L), Inspiratory Capacity (IC) (L), and Maximum Voluntary Ventilation (MVV) (L) ± SD of post-COVID-19 subjects were less compared to their corresponding predicted values. The Mean±SD of FEV1/FVC (%) and tidal volume (L) of COVID-19 recovered subjects were higher than their corresponding expected value. The FEV, Forced Expiratory Flow (FEF), and FEV1 values were significantly less in females compared to males. Conclusion: Coronavirus Disease-19-recovered subjects showed altered respiratory functions even after six weeks, with the majority having restrictive disease, followed by a mixed pattern and obstructive diseases, while the remaining showed no changes in lung function. Altered pulmonary functions in COVID-19 patients may be due to alveolar destruction or pulmonary interstitial fibrosis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Little is known about motor competence and the longitudinal development of motor performance among youth with cystic fibrosis (CF). In this study, we assessed aspects of motor performance in different age groups of young patients with CF and compared them with a healthy reference group of same aged children. We also examined the development of motor performance among different age groups of these children with CF, using The Deutscher Motorik Test (DMT) to assess attributes of health-related and motor performance-related fitness. We used an incremental ergometer cycle test to determine maximal exercise capacity (expressed as peak workload). We evaluated and recorded habitual physical activity (PA) as measured by the number of steps per day and the time spent in different PA intensities (expressed in metabolic equivalents). In total, 31 children and adolescents with CF agreed to participate (13 girls,18 boys) aged 6–17 years (M = 11.3, SD =3.3 years); they had a mean one second forced expiratory volume (expressed as a percentage of predicted value [% pred]) of 87.2% (SD = 22.3%). We found their values of health-related and motor performance-related fitness to be significantly lower (p < 0.05) than those of their healthy peer participants. In contrast to the reference group, participants with CF up to 14 years of age showed a linear improvement in these values and in their PA, followed by a plateau or even a nonsignificant decrease after age 14. These findings have important implications for the development and prescription of exercise programs for children with CF. Besides aerobic and strength exercises, we recommend that neuromuscular training be integrated into exercise programs to improve the coordinative abilities of youth with CF. More attention should be paid to vulnerable older adolescents to ensure their long-term motivation to maintain exercise participation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study was designed to use volumetric capnography to evaluate the breathing pattern and ventilation inhomogeneities in patients with chronic sputum production and bronchiectasis and to correlate the phase 3 slope of the capnographic curve to spirometric measurements. Twenty-four patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) and 21 patients with noncystic fibrosis idiopathic bronchiectasis (BC) were serially enrolled. The diagnosis of cystic fibrosis was based on the finding of at least two abnormal sweat chloride concentrations (iontophoresis sweat test). The diagnosis of bronchiectasis was made when the patient had a complaint of chronic sputum production and compatible findings at high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) scan of the thorax. Spirometric tests and volumetric capnography were performed. The 114 subjects of the control group for capnographic variables were nonsmoker volunteers, who had no respiratory symptoms whatsoever and no past or present history of lung disease. Compared with controls, patients in CF group had lower SpO2 ( P < 0.0001), higher respiratory rates (RR) ( P < 0.0001), smaller expiratory volumes normalized for weight (VE/kg) ( P < 0.028), smaller expiratory times (Te) ( P < 0.0001), and greater phase 3 Slopes normalized for tidal volume (P3Slp/VE) ( P < 0.0001). Compared with controls, patients in the BC group had lower SpO2 ( P < 0.0001), higher RR ( P < 0.004), smaller VE/kg ( P < 0.04), smaller Te ( P < 0.007), greater P3Slp/VE ( P < 0.0001), and smaller VCO2 ( P < 0.0002). The pooled data from the two patient groups compared with controls showed that the patients had lower SpO2 ( P < 0.0001), higher RR ( P < 0.0001), smaller VE/kg ( P < 0.05), smaller Te ( P < 0.0001), greater P3Slp/VE ( P < 0.0001), and smaller VCO2 ( P < 0.0003). All of the capnographic and spirometric variables evaluated showed no significant differences between CF and BC patients. Spirometric data in this study reveals that the patients had obstructive defects with concomitant low vital capacities and both groups had very similar abnormalities. The capnographic variables in the patient group suggest a restrictive respiratory pattern (greater respiratory rates, smaller expiratory times and expiratory volumes, normal peak expiratory flows). Both groups of patients showed increased phase III slopes compared with controls, which probably indicates the presence of diffuse disease of small airways in both conditions leading to inhomogeneities of ventilation.
