Objective: The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between exercise adherence and suicidal ideation in college students, as well as the mediating role of meaning in life and internet addiction. Methods: A total of 1925 college students (Mage = 19.51 years, SDage = 2.393 years) were recruited by stratified cluster sampling method in Zhaoqing University, among which 890 were males and 1,035 were females. Exercise adherence, meaning in life, internet addiction and suicidal ideation were assessed by using standard scales. Data were analyzed by Pearson Correlation Analysis, and biascorrection percentile Bootstrap method. Results: (1) There is a significant correlation between exercise adherence, meaning in life, internet addiction and suicide ideation; (2) meaning in life plays a significant mediating role between exercise adherence and suicidal ideation; internet addiction plays a significant mediating role between exercise adherence and suicidal ideation; meaning in life and internet addiction play a chain mediating role between exercise adherence and suicide ideation. Conclusion: Exercise adherence can not only directly predict college students' suicidal ideation, but also indirectly predict college students' suicidal ideation through the independent mediation and chain mediation of meaning in life and internet addiction. Physical activity and exercise is the key to a healthy lifestyle and prevention of disease. Lack of persistency and regular commitment towards exercise are the basic challenges that lead individuals to develop inactive physical lifestyles. Motivation for exercise plays an important role in maintaining healthy lifestyle habits, a pre-requisite a healthy ageing process in the future. In this context, the self-determination theory is a widely used theory in the context of studying the influence of an individual's motivation for his/her behavior. In this context, the current study has been conducted with the objective to explore how autonomous, controlled and extrinsic motivation influences levels of exercise persistence and exercise commitment with the mediation of exercise enjoyment in China. To achieve this objective, the data was collected from 304 respondents through a survey questionnaire and the collected data was analyzed. The results obtained from the analysis have indicated that the impact of autonomous motivation is positively significant for exercise persistence but is insignificant in case of exercise commitment. Similarly, the impact of controlled motivation is significant and positive for both exercise commitment and persistence. Moreover, the impact of extrinsic motivation is negatively significant for both exercise commitment and persistence. Lastly, exercise enjoyment has significant mediating role between all the independent variables and dependent variables. The study has theoretical as well as practical implications, especially the gym trainers and physical health fitness coaches. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: The present study aimed to examine the bright and dark sides of motivation, based on self‐determination theory, as predictors of enjoyment, intention to continue exercising, and exercise persistence. In addition, we analyzed the mediation role of each variable and tested the model invariance between male and female exercisers. Methods: A total of 575 gym exercisers (female = 230) aged between 18 and 65 years (M = 34.07; SD = 11.47) participated in this study. All participants had at least 6 months of regular exercise practice; exercise frequency of the participants ranged from 2 to 7 sessions per week (M = 3.52; SD = 1.28) and training sessions lasted approximately 30 and 120 minutes (M = 61.54; SD = 17.64). Participants completed a multisection questionnaire assessing interpersonal behaviors, basic psychological needs satisfaction and frustration, behavioral regulations, enjoyment, and intentions to continue exercising. Exercise persistence was assessed 6 months after initial assessment using gym computer system attendance records. Several analyses, namely, confirmatory factor analysis, structural equation modeling, serial mediation analysis, and structural invariance testing, were performed to increase theoretical and empirical knowledge. Results: Positive associations were observed among the bright side of motivation, enjoyment, intention to continue exercising, and persistence. On the other hand, the dark side of motivation was negatively associated with the bright side constructs, enjoyment, intention, and exercise persistence. Both measurement [χ2(370) = 1496.708, χ2/df = 4.05; B‐S P <.001, CFI = 0.907, TLI = 0.901, SRMR = 0.056, RMSEA = 0.073 (CI 90% = 0.063, 0.083)] and structural models [χ2(393) = 2484.994, χ2/df = 6.323; B‐S P <.001, CFI = 0.908, TLI = 0.900, SRMR = 0.075, RMSEA = 0.071 (CI 90% = 0.067, 0.075)] displayed acceptable fit to the data. The results also showed that basic psychological needs satisfaction, autonomous motivation, enjoyment, and intention to continue exercising were significant mediators. However, enjoyment had the highest effect on exercise persistence. In addition, structural model invariance was confirmed between male and female exercisers. Conclusion: Motivational determinants have implications for predicting emotional, cognitive, and behavior‐related outcomes. Individuals should perceive exercise instructors as supportive and exercising as a fun activity to endorse long‐term exercise persistence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This thesis investigated the effects of two different pathways to achieve gym members loyalty. The first path is a marketing path that is built around the customer engagement concept, driven by perceived quality, satisfaction, involvement. The second path is adapted from the sports psychology field, which concentrates on exercise persistence and its antecedents: intrinsic motivation, self-efficacy, and outcome expectation. Member's loyalty was studied as an outcome of customer engagement and exercise persistence. The thesis also explored the moderating effects of gender and age generation. Data were collected in Qatar (n = 443) and analysed using SPSS and Smart PLS3. The results revealed that the two pathways explained a significant amount of variance in loyalty, but the marketing path had a higher explanatory power than the sports psychology path. The results showed that three predictors-perceived quality, satisfaction, and involvement-significantly influence customer engagement. Intrinsic motivation and self-efficacy had significant influence on exercise persistence, whereas outcome expectation was not a significant predictor. The findings show that customer engagement and involvement have significant effects independently of gender and generation (generation 1 vs. generation 2). Based on the results, key theoretical and managerial implications are proposed.

PHYSICAL activity ,PHYSICAL fitness ,EXERCISE ,HEALTH promotion ,HUMAN behavior - Abstract
The 2012 Academy meeting focused on research related to increasing levels of physical activity and promoting persistence. Speakers agreed that answers would be hard to come by but that progress was possible. Emphases for potential solutions ranged from the cellular to the cultural, from neural mechanisms to symbolic processes, from particle physics to philosophy. Strategies for intervention were diverse and reflected a series of dynamical tensions--behavioral and nonbehavioral, cognitive and noncognitive, traditional and nontraditional, environmental and motivational, and finally medical in contrast to educational. It is likely, given the complexities inherent in increasing movement behaviors and assuring persistence, that various blends of solutions emerging from multiple points on the disciplinary landscape and honoring truths that run across these strategic tensions will be needed. - Abstract
The article provides information on the role of motivation on the attitude towards exercise. It notes that motivation, which concerns energy, direction, and persistence, directs the behavior. According to self-determination continuum, motivation can be of a more extrinsic or intrinsic quality. It discusses the different qualities of motivation including amotivation, external, and identified regulation. Self-determined motivation can be produced through competence, autonomy, and relatedness.

Huong Q Nguyen1, Dawn P Gill1, Seth Wolpin1, BonnieG Steele2, Joshua O Benditt11University of Washington, seattle, WA, USA; 2VA Puget Sound Health Care System, Seattle, WA, USAObjective: To determine the feasibility and efficacy of a six-month, cell phone-based exercise persistence intervention for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) following pulmonary rehabilitation. Methods: Participants who completed a two-week run-in were randomly assigned to either MOBILE-Coached (n = 9) or MOBILE-Self-Monitored (n = 8). All participants met with a nurse to develop an individualized exercise plan, were issued a pedometer and exercise booklet, and instructed to continue to log their daily exercise and symptoms. MOBILE-Coached also received weekly reinforcement text messages on their cell phones; reports of worsening symptoms were automatically flagged for follow-up. Usability and satisfaction were assessed. Participants completed incremental cycle and six minute walk (6MW) tests, wore an activity monitor for 14 days, and reported their health-related quality of life (HRQL) at baseline, three, and six months. Results: The sample had a mean age of 68 ± 11 and forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) of 40 ± 18% predicted. Participants reported that logging their exercise and symptoms was easy and that keeping track of their exercise helped them remain active. There were no differences between groups over time in maximal workload, 6MW distance, or HRQL (p > 0.05); however, MOBILE-Self-Monitored increased total steps/day whereas MOBILE-Coached logged fewer steps over six months (p = 0.04).Conclusions: We showed that it is feasible to deliver a cell phone-based exercise persistence intervention to patients with COPD post-rehabilitation and that the addition of coaching appeared to be no better than self-monitoring. The latter finding needs to be interpreted with caution since this was a purely exploratory study.Trial registration: ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT00373932).Keywords: chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, physical activity, exercise persistence, pulmonary rehabilitation, cell phones
