But despite their populist bluster, demagogues are saboteurs of democracy, driven by an urge to ditch and destroy the checks and balances vital to restraining abuses of power. Unless checked, demagogues are the harbingers of a new, 21st-century form of despotism: a corrupted, phantom democracy in which periodic elections are held but the rich become super-rich and omnipotent—while most of the populace is gripped by feelings of powerlessness when it comes to the big decisions shaping everyday life. The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted everyday consumption routines and rituals, as well as their accompanying relationships. In doing so, the importance of such familiar activities to social meanings, cohesiveness, and wellbeing was made apparent. Often overlooked in their familiarity, the day-to-day and mundane aspects of consumption that take place in the immediate surroundings of consumers, are shown in this article to help define, preserve, and give meaning to everyday life. Autoethnography of everyday familial consumption during COVID-19 develops themes of retreat, reconfiguration, and resistance, whereby routines initially disrupted by the pandemic were recalibrated using digital technologies and altered habits and reasserted via minor resistances. AbstractPurposeMaterials and methodsResultsConclusions\nIMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATIONAs the group of technology-dependent children with long-term tracheostomy continues to expand, we aimed to explore parents’ lived experience of everyday life with a child dependent on long-term tracheostomy.Six parents of four children were interviewed and the transcripts analyzed using Giorgi’s descriptive phenomenology.All aspects of everyday life, parent-child interaction, and interaction with the surrounding outside world were affected by technology dependency. Parents played an active role by acting both as a protective shield between the outside world and the child and as an enabling bridge to help the child interact with the outside world. The active and involved role of parents is interwoven in all aspects, levels, and directions of interaction and everyday life. The lived experiences can be described in four themes: caution and risk awareness due to technology, meeting the demands of technology dependence, strained and constrained by technology dependence, and conflicted feelings about technology dependence.Long-term tracheostomy and technology-dependency affect and shape everyday life. Moving is an integral part of everyday life and applies to accessing the workplace, attending a health centre or meeting friends. Determination of the source of sound may be important when a visually impaired person is moving around. This allows to navigate, but also provides important information about potential danger. Sound exercises have been prepared to support the ability to recognize the direction of sound and to learn about the problems associated with it. The research version of the app was prepared covering 12 situations related to three static and nine dynamic sources of sounds. All 10 participants in the exercises had a significant degree of visual impairment. An extended dataset obtained from three subjects without disabilities was also included. As a result, six exercises qualified for the final set of sound exercises, which allow to gain benefits from their implementation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence has significantly expanded the role of service robots in everyday life. This expansion necessitates the accurate recognition and prediction of human intentions to provide timely and appropriate services. However, existing methods often struggle to perform effectively in complex and unstructured environments. To address this challenge, we propose the Large language model and Knowledge graph based Intention Recognition Framework (LKIRF), which combines large language model (LLM) with knowledge graphs (KG) to enhance the intention recognition capabilities of service robots. Our approach constructs an offline KG from human motion and environmental data and builds an online reasoning graph through real-time interaction, utilizing LLM for interpretation. Experimental results indicate that compared to traditional methods, LKIRF not only improves prediction accuracy across various scenarios but also enhances the transparency and interpretability of the intention reasoning process. Deficits in neurocognition are highlighted as a contributing factor to paranoid-related disorders, but the impact on the symptom-level experience of paranoid ideation is unclear. This study aimed to employ a dimensional approach to understand the association between neurocognition and the severity and presence of paranoid ideation.400 participants, representative of the general population of the USA, completed an online questionnaire consisting of the Brief Symptom Inventory-53, and demographic and clinical questions. The participants then completed four computerised neurocognitive tasks measuring working memory, shifting, inhibition, and speed of processing.Speed of processing accounted for unique variance in the severity of paranoid ideation with a small effect size, after controlling for covariates. Working memory, shifting, and inhibition could not uniquely or collectively, account for paranoid ideation. Neurocognitive performance could not distinguish between individuals with and without paranoid ideation experiences.This research supports the body of literature that speed of information processing may be a key feature of paranoid ideation. Future research should employ non-linear dynamic methods to better understand the potential interactions between neurocognitive components and how this may relate to paranoid ideation. The ability to maintain and manipulate sequential information in working memory, referred to as sequential working memory, plays a vital role in our daily life. While research has shown that methamphetamine abuse affects the neural substrates and the overall functioning of working memory, its specific impact on sequential working memory remains unclear. In this study, we asked 62 abstinent methamphetamine-dependent participants and 59 control participants to complete a digit ordering task in which they saw four digits one-by-one over time and subsequently rearranged them in ascending order. The four digits were presented either randomly in the experimental condition or in ascending order in the control condition. Results show that methamphetamine-dependent participants performed worse than the controls in the experimental condition in which sequential working memory was needed to complete the task, but not in the control condition in which only short-term memory was needed. People are self-biased for rewards. We place a higher value on rewards if we receive them than if other people do. However, existing work has ignored one of the most powerful theorems from behavioural ecology of how animals seek resources in everyday life, the Marginal Value Theorem (MVT), which accounts for optimal behaviour for maximising resources intake rate. Does this self-bias help humans maximise rewards when foraging for their own benefit compared to foraging for the benefit of others? Participants had to decide when to leave patches where reward intake was gradually depleting, in environments with different average reward rates. Half of the time participants foraged for themselves, and in the other half they collected rewards for an anonymous stranger. The optimal MVT derived solution states people should leave when the instantaneous reward intake in a patch equals the average rate in an environment. Across two studies, people were more optimal when foraging for self, showing a reduced sensitivity to instantaneous rewards when foraging for other. Autistic traits were linked to reduced sensitivity to reward rates when foraging for self but not for other. This article explores the local belonging of refugees in rural areas in Germany from the perspectives of both migrants and local integration actors. It analyses the development of a personal sense of belonging and the construction of the politics of belonging, with the aim of understanding belonging as a socio‐spatial process. The analysis is based on 64 semi‐structured and semi‐narrative qualitative interviews conducted in eight rural communities and small towns in different regions across Germany. The findings indicate that the sense of belonging to rural localities among refugees is influenced not only by personal and biographical experiences but also by overarching policies and administrative practices. They also reflect the expectations of the receiving communities, which imply imaginaries of rural communities. We evaluated the relationships of daily sleep duration and inconsistency with soft tennis competitive performance among 15 healthy collegiate soft tennis players (13 male, 2 female, mean age = 19.7 ± 0.8 years, height = 170.8 ± 7.3 cm, weight = 60.3 ± 5.6 kg, soft tennis experience = 8.7 ± 2.0 years). Sleep duration and inconsistency were determined by a 50-day sleep diary, which recorded sleep and wake times of sleep. Soft tennis athletic performance was evaluated by a service and baseline stroke accuracy test and the spider run test. Mean sleep duration was 7.4 ± 1.7 h. No correlation was found between long-term mean sleep duration and athletic performance. But inconsistency in sleep duration (SD of sleep duration) was inversely correlated with service score after controlling for soft tennis experience and sex (r = −0.56, p = 0.046). There was no significant relationship between sleep inconsistency and other athletic performance. This result indicates that reducing the instability of sleep duration (i.e., sleep regular hours) in the long-term may have a positive effect on soft tennis players' service performance. Although participants' current mean sleep duration (7.4 h) was not as sufficient as the recommendation in sleep extension experiments (9–10 h), it revealed the importance for athletes to maintain regular sleep in daily life. A robot hand-arm that can perform various tasks with the unaffected arm could ease the daily lives of patients with a single upper-limb dysfunction. A smooth interaction between robot and patient is desirable since their other arm functions normally. If the robot can move in response to the user's intentions and cooperate with the unaffected arm, even without detailed operation, it can effectively assist with daily tasks. This study aims to propose and develop a cybernic robot hand-arm with the following features: 1) input of user intention via bioelectrical signals from the paralyzed arm, the unaffected arm's motion, and voice; 2) autonomous control of support movements; 3) a control system that integrates voluntary and autonomous control by combining 1) and 2) to thus allow smooth work support in cooperation with the unaffected arm, reflecting intention as a part of the body; and 4) a learning function to provide work support across various tasks in daily use. We confirmed the feasibility and usefulness of the proposed system through a pilot study involving three patients. The system learned to support new tasks by working with the user through an operating function that does not require the involvement of the unaffected arm. The system divides the support actions into movement phases and learns the phase-shift conditions from the sensor information about the user's intention. After learning, the system autonomously performs learned support actions through voluntary phase shifts based on input about the user's intention via bioelectrical signals, the unaffected arm's motion, and by voice, enabling smooth collaborative movement with the unaffected arm. Experiments with patients demonstrated that the system could learn and provide smooth work support in cooperation with the unaffected arm to successfully complete tasks they find difficult. Additionally, the questionnaire subjectively confirmed that cooperative work according to the user's intention was achieved and that work time was within a feasible range for daily life. Furthermore, it was observed that participants who used bioelectrical signals from their paralyzed arm perceived the system as part of their body. Background: Myositis is a rare disease associated with impaired health-related quality of life. A study evaluating the effectiveness of an intervention to improve the quality of life and well-being of myositis patients is presented. Methods: All myositis patients in a health district were contacted. Thirty-four eligible patients were randomly assigned to the experimental (n = 17) or control (n = 17) group. A psychoeducational intervention of 5 100-min sessions focusing on the disease as related to daily life was conducted only in experimental patients. Several reliable tools to measure quality of life and well-being were administered twice, before and after the intervention, to both groups. Results: In the experimental group, post-test scores were higher than pre-test in quality of life, well-being, and self-efficacy to manage the disease. Improvements were more evident in the experimental group than controls in 70% of the variables studied. Specifically, sedentariness decreased and satisfaction with social relationships increased in the post-test evaluation to a greater degree in the experimental group than in controls. Conclusions: This randomized controlled trial on a representative sample of myositis patients in an extensive population provides evidence indicating the effectiveness of a psychoeducational intervention for improving HRQoL, well-being, and self-efficacy to manage the disease. Health is a key dimension of contemporary food consumption. This preoccupation is beginning to overlap with ecological concerns, as healthy diets are said to largely correspond with sustainable diets. Nevertheless, this link remains rather vague and under-researched in practice. This article adopts an 'embodied materialist' perspective to inquire into how the health–sustainability nexus is articulated in the everyday labour of people engaging in alternative food consumption. The interviews, carried out in Milan (Italy), suggest that focusing on health might not always be straightforwardly effective for the promotion of deep and systemic changes. The analysis finds three ways in which the health–sustainability nexus is articulated in daily life. If framed within the dominant articulation of labour and value, health is an individualistic preoccupation with limited potential for socio-ecological transformation. When food labour is guided by the very different logic of care, which emphasises relationality, fragility and the search for a shared wellbeing, more ecological practices emerge, but with some ambivalent implications especially with regards to social justice. Global fans' engagement with K-pop (South Korean pop music) demonstrates how audiences' daily lives and identities are interwoven with transcultural media. This study explores how global K-pop fan cultures have evolved along with the genre's expansion overseas, with particular reference to Peruvian fans in the Global South context. Drawing on Peruvian fans' accounts of the global K-pop fanscapes – the universes experienced and mediated through fan practices, the study addresses the complexities, negotiations, and conflicts in audience engagement with transcultural media. By examining how K-pop fans in a distant locale imaginarily identify with K-pop idols and interact with other global fans and non-fans, the study reveals that local fans may realize their identity in the global fanscapes while being aware of power relations that operate between different audiences. Problematic mobile phone use (PMPU) has become a worldwide phenomenon with negative impacts on adolescents' daily lives. While self-control has been shown to be related to PMPU, little is known about the underlying mechanisms of this association. Based on the Interaction of Person-Affect-Cognition-Execution model and the strength model of self-control, the current study aims to examine the association between self-control and PMPU, to identify the indirect role of craving, and to determine whether and how the two components of desire thinking exert differential moderating effects. A sample of 1424 adolescents was recruited to complete the scales of self-control, craving, desire thinking, and PMPU. The results suggested that self-control was indirectly associated with PMPU through craving. Furthermore, this indirect association was moderated by verbal perseveration, rather than imaginal prefiguration. Specifically, the indirect association was stronger for adolescents with higher verbal perseveration. The findings deepen our understanding of how self-control is related to PMPU and distinguish the effects of two components of desire thinking among adolescents. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Many imputation methods have been developed over the years and tested mostly under ideal settings. Surprisingly, there is no detailed research on how imputation methods perform when the idealized assumptions about the distribution of data and/or model assumptions are partly not fulfilled. This research looks into the susceptibility of imputation techniques, particularly in relation to outliers, misclassifications, and incorrect model specifications. This is crucial knowledge about how well the methods convince in everyday life because, in reality, conditions are usually not ideal, and model assumptions may not hold. The data may not fit the defined models well. Outliers distort the estimates, and misclassifications reduce the quality of most imputation methods. Several different evaluation measures are discussed, from comparing imputed values with true values or comparing certain statistics, from the performance of classifiers to the variance of estimated parameters. Some well-known imputation methods are compared based on real data and simulations. Exposure to talker variability shapes how learning unfolds in the lab, and occurs in the everyday speech infants hear in daily life. Here, we asked whether aspects of talker variability in speech input are also linked to the onset of word production. We further asked whether these effects were redundant with effects of speech register (i.e., whether speech input was adult‐ vs. child‐directed). To do so, we first extracted a set of highly common nouns from a longitudinal corpus of home recordings from North‐American English‐learning infants. We then used the acoustic variability in how these tokens were said to predict when the children first produced these same nouns. We found that in addition to frequency, variability in how words sound in 6–17 month's input predicted when children first said these words. Furthermore, while the proportion of child‐directed speech also predicted the month of first production, it did so alongside measurements of acoustic variability in children's real‐world input. Together, these results add to a growing body of literature suggesting that variability in how words sound in the input is linked to learning both in the lab and in daily life. This Special Issue explores Latin America's recent wave of militarism across countries, the militarization of the rule of law, and its consequences on everyday life. It draws on the region's recent history of giving militarized responses to seemingly intractable social, political, and economical problems. We argue that the presence of military values, beliefs, and mentalities have permeated processes in which nations absorb and aspire to military practices, modes of organization, and martial discourses that require greater scholarly attention. The articles address a series of issues including various forms of militarism and the militarization of family, culture and education, diplomacy, policing, and public security in urban and rural settings. The contributions engage systematically with the roots of militarism and give evidence of militarization at the individual, national, and international levels, including a variety of case studies from across the Western Hemisphere. Financial fluctuations affect all aspects of economic production and daily life. Using the slacks-based measure (SBM) model and the functional data analysis (FDA) technique, this study examined the pattern of global low-carbon development and the synergies between these development processes and financial fluctuations from 1991–2019. The main results show that (1) the world is making steady progress in low-carbon development. However, there were clear imbalances at the regional level. Among the countries analysed, Italy, Luxembourg, and the United States are leading in low-carbon development, while Ukraine, Bulgaria, and Slovakia are lagging. (2) The direction and magnitude of financial development affecting global low-carbon development vary over time. In recent years, its internal instabilities have increased. (3) There are distinct spatial heterogeneities in the direction and magnitude of this impact. This article studies the conditions required by populist radical right actors to convincingly create a sense of crisis. The article draws on the literature on political blame games and policy feedback to argue that it is not only the salience of an event that determines its 'populist exploitability', but also its proximity to mass publics – or more simply, how directly and closely it affects citizens. In the study, Moffitt's stepwise model of populist crisis performance is extended and expectations are formulated regarding how the proximity of an event influences the various steps of crisis performance. The article then tests this theoretical argument with a within-unit analysis of the crisis performance of a populist radical right party, the Alternative for Germany (AfD), during the refugee crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic. The analysis suggests that the pandemic's proximity to people's daily lives narrowed and complicated the AfD's crisis performance in important ways. The article sheds light on the determinants of the success of populist radical right parties and nuances our understanding of the broader relationship between populism and crisis. This article aims to describe the complex linguistic and sociolinguistic situation of Alto Adige – Südtirol, officially named Autonomous Province of Bolzano – Bozen with a focus on the varieties of German spoken there as first language. The territory, which is officially trilingual as it hosts the Ladin minority in Val Gardena and Val Badia besides the Italian speakers, became part of Italy in 1919 as “spoils of war” after Austrian defeat in the First World War. The division of the ancient historical region of Tyrol meant a subsequent difficult period of forced Italianization, imposing Italian on German in names, toponyms and daily life. Only the determination of the local population and their affection to their language and culture has preserved – even if not always with peaceful means – the survival of the Austrian dialects and traditions and has led to the modern forms of safeguarding and cohabitation which make of this province of Northern Italy one of the strongest linguistic minorities in all Europe. The article draws upon in-depth interviews conducted in Czech multigenerational living with representatives of three generations. The repeated interviews took place in 2018–2019 and then in spring 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic. The analysis focused on caring practices and dynamics of care between three generations and how these had been impacted by pandemic in 2020. We were interested in how the pandemic affected the daily lives of multigenerationally living family members and how through their caring practices they redefine what family in the era of super-diversity is. In order to do so, we particularly focus on how vulnerability has been constructed through the caring practices as a response to Covid-19. We followed the scholarship on vulnerability which emphasises its social character and sees it as a social construct. We put forward this discussion and aim at developing the concept of ‘making vulnerability’ – processes through which people make themselves and others vulnerable through daily taken-for-granted routines and rituals – as an essential part of family care practices. Workshops provide a flexible approach to studying complex issues. This paper discusses the methodological considerations involved in doing research through workshops and aims to further the understanding of how workshops can facilitate interactive and creative knowledge practices in case study research. The paper builds on two research projects - where workshops were used to study the practices of professionals' use of digital tools at a consultancy firm and the everyday life of residents in a newly built city district. In the project about professional practices, three workshops were carried out with professionals from different disciplines and focused on their use of a specific digital tool, BIM. Post-its were used to introduce, explore and discuss different topics around everyday practices and digital tools, both individually and in various group arrangements. The three workshops built on each other and resulted in a concrete action plan for developing the company's work regarding BIM. In the research about the everyday life, the participants in five workshops were asked to draw a map of their home and other meaningful places in the city district. These individual "mental maps" were then used as a starting point for discussing the residents' everyday practices in a group setting. While the workshops in the two research projects targeted different groups and had different forms, they both made use of visual materials as a central aspect of workshops. Therefore, we analysed the workshops with a relational material framework to further understand how design choices affect research practice and research outcomes. From this lens, we analyse our choices in designing the workshops, the analytical processes and the consequences these choices have on what knowledge we create in interaction with the participants. Interventions for increasing self‐compassion are typically assessed through retrospective reports, which may not accurately capture everyday self‐compassionate behaviour. Our study addresses this using experience sampling to evaluate a brief compassion‐focused intervention's effects on needs for self‐compassion, awareness of opportunities for self‐compassion, self‐compassionate behaviour and emotional responses to one's distress in daily life. Results indicated that the intervention was associated with less likelihood of reporting needs and opportunities for self‐compassion but with no difference in self‐compassionate actions or emotional experience. When participants acted self‐compassionately, they reported more positive emotional experiences after needing self‐compassion. This underscores the disparity between retrospective and ecological assessments, emphasizing the need for interventions to be evaluated in real‐life contexts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This introduction to the themed section on ‘Mechanisms of National Solidarity’ explores key questions and challenges related to studying national solidarity as distinct from national identity. Focusing on the ‘how’ rather than the ‘what’, this section highlights the importance of examining and theorising the social mechanisms that shape different manifestations of national solidarity. These mechanisms include interpersonal interactions, social networks, communicative processes, socio‐political institutions and iconic material objects. Additionally, the introduction briefly outlines the six contributions in this section, which examines specific solidarity mechanisms within particular national contexts. The contributions offer valuable insights into the study of nationhood and nationalism in both everyday life and public events, helping to unravel the under‐explored relationship between collective identity formation and the creation of solidarity. Memories are crucial for daily life, yet the network-level organizing principles governing neural representations of experiences remain unknown. Employing dual-site in vivo recording in freely behaving male mice, here we show that hippocampal dorsal CA1 (dCA1) and basolateral amygdala (BLA) utilize distinct coding strategies for novel experiences. A small assembly of BLA neurons emerged active during memory acquisition and persisted through consolidation, whereas most dCA1 neurons were engaged in both processes. Machine learning decoding revealed that dCA1 population spikes predicted BLA assembly firing rate, suggesting that most dCA1 neurons concurrently index an episodic event by rapidly establishing weighted communication with a specific BLA assembly – a process we term "many-to-one weighted mapping." We also found that dCA1 reactivations preceded BLA assembly activity preferably during elongated and enlarged dCA1 ripples. Using a closed-loop strategy, we demonstrated that suppressing BLA activity after large dCA1 ripples impaired memory. These findings highlight a many-to-one weighted mapping mechanism underlying both the acquisition and consolidation of new memories. Memories are crucial for daily life, yet the network-level principles governing neural representations of memories are not fully understood. The pandemic has been the catalyst for many families with young children to leave the urban environment and settle in rural areas, attracted by discourses that are in tune with the imported and classic ‘ideal of rural childhood’: natural environment, freedom, autonomy, mutual help, peace and quiet. However, we do not know to what extent this ideal construction of childhood in rural areas corresponds nowadays to the everyday reality of children. In this article we analyse the daily experiences and emotions of children in rural areas of Catalonia (Spain). By applying a qualitative methodology that allows children to express themselves, we provide a critical reading of the current rural areas based on children’s lived experiences. The use of the relief map as a methodological tool makes possible to graphically capture children’s emotions related to places. The research fills a gap on the current rural childhood experiences in non-Anglo-Saxon contexts, places the concept of the rural ideal in the Catalan environment and provides insight into the diversity of rural childhoods based on children’s experiences and emotions. Background: Unstable gait leading to falls negatively impacts the quality of life in many people with Parkinson's disease (PD). Systematic review evidence provides moderate to strong evidence of efficacy for a wide range of physiotherapybased interventions to reduce gait impairment. However, outcomes have often focused on gait assessments conducted in controlled laboratory or clinical environments. Objective: This perspective investigates the complexities and challenges of conducting real-world gait assessments in people with PD and the factors that may influence the translation from improved lab-assessed gait to improved real-world gait. Methods: Through a thorough review of current literature, we present an in-depth analysis of current methodological approaches to real-world gait assessments and the challenges that may influence the translation of an intervention's success from lab-based outcomes to improved walking during daily life. Results: We identified six key factors that may influence the translation of intervention success into real-world environments at different stages of the process. These factors comprise the gait intervention, parameters analyzed, sensor setup, assessment protocols, characteristics of walking bouts, and medication status. We provide recommendations for each factor based on our synthesis of current literature. Conclusion: This perspective emphasizes the importance of measuring intervention success outside of the laboratory environment using real-world gait assessments. Our findings support the need for future studies to bridge the gap between proven efficacy for gait as assessed in controlled laboratory environments and real-world impact for people with PD. With billions of players, gaming is ubiquitous in everyday life. The growing interest in games has also sparked scientific interest in why people play. Existing measures, however, are focused on specific theories, genres, or games, lack validation, or highlight disordered gaming. Therefore, the Motivation to Play Scale (MOPS) provides a comprehensive scale assessing general gaming motivation. After an item pool was based on a systematic literature review, we evaluated the dimensionality of items and used exploratory factor analysis (N1 = 562) resulting in 58 items and a 10-factor structure (i.e., creativity/exploration, escapism, competition, prestige, enjoyment, achievement, socializing, boredom, aggression, and skill). Lastly, we cross-validated the structure using confirmatory factor analysis and exploratory structural equation modeling (N2 = 732). Latent profile analysis identified four gamer types (i.e., casual players, high performers, crafters, and highly involved players). Emotion is an episode involving changes in multiple components, specifically subjective feelings, physiological arousal, expressivity, and action tendencies, all these driven by appraisal processes. However, very few attempts have been made to comprehensively model emotion episodes from this full componential perspective, given the statistical and methodological complexity involved. Recently, network analyses have been proposed in the field of emotion and cognition as an innovative theoretical and statistical framework able to integrate several properties of emotions. We therefore addressed the call for more multi-componential evidence by modeling the network of a comprehensive list of emotion components drawn from the Component Process Model of Emotion. Five-hundred students were confronted with mildly ambiguous scenarios from everyday life, and reported on their situational appraisals and emotion responses. Network analyses were applied to the emotion components related to a positive and a negative scenario to explore 1) how the components organize themselves into networks and dimensions; 2) which components are the most central within networks and dimensions; and 3) the patterns of components relation between and within dimensions. A three-dimensional solution emerged in both scenarios. Additionally, some appraisals and responses appeared to be differentially relevant and related to each other in both scenarios, highlighting the importance of context in shaping the strength of emotion component relations. Overall, we enriched the field of affective science by exploring the connections between emotion components in three novel ways: by using network analyses, by integrating them into a multi-componential framework, and by providing context to our emotion components. Our results can also potentially inform applied research, where understanding the interconnections and the centrality of components could aid the personalization of interventions. Objective: To investigate the effect of daily use of subconscious vibrotactile stimulation in bilateral vestibulopathy (BVP) patients, who judged the effect of vestibular rehabilitation as insufficient. Methods: BVP patients were asked to wear a subconscious vibrotactile stimulation belt for 2 h. Patients who reported benefit after 2 h of use, were instructed to wear a subconscious vibrotactile stimulation belt in daily life, for up to more than 2 years. Follow-up consultations (mostly by telephone calls) were scheduled after 2 weeks, 2 months, 1 year, and 2 years of use. During these consultations, adherence and the self-reported overall Balance and Mobility Score (BMS) were evaluated. Results: One hundred twenty-one BVP patients were included. Regarding adherence, 74% of patients (n = 89) wanted to proceed with daily use at home after 2 h of try out. Of these patients, 90% (n = 80) was still wearing the belt daily after 2 months, and at least 81% (n = 72) after 1 year and 73% (n = 65) after 2 years. It should be noted that lack of adherence after 1 and 2 years resulted from a loss to follow-up. All patients responding to telephone consultations in the 2 years follow up were wearing a subconscious vibrotactile stimulation belt daily. The median BMS score significantly improved within 2 h of use, from 4 to 6 points (p < 0.0001). Compared to baseline, the median BMS score significantly improved with >=3 points after 2 weeks, 2 months, 1 year, and 2 years of daily use (p < 0.0001). Long-term adherence was high in patients who experienced an increase of two or more points on the BMS, after 2 weeks of daily use. Conclusion: The Subconscious vibrotactile stimulation improves self-reported balance andmobility in a subgroup of motivated BVP patients in which vestibular rehabilitation is insufficient. Given the pervasive integration of technology into everyday life and its importance in mitigating the negative consequences of global crises, an understanding of human adaptation and preceding cognitive abilities remains highly relevant. A systematic review synthesising empirical findings on the association of executive functions (EFs) and the adaptation to new technologies is currently lacking in the literature. The presented pre-registered, systematic review adheres to PRISMA 2020 guidelines and aims to extract the current state of research on this topic [Registration DOI:10.17605/OSF.IO/MKA82]. Empirical studies investigating the influence of EFs on human adaptation were eligible for inclusion, resulting in 11 studies and 3,733 participants among PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and PsycINFO. Results suggest an enhancing influence of EFs on the adaptation to new technologies, although findings were partially mixed. Inconsistent findings and the performed risk of bias assessment point toward a need for further high-quality research, e.g. on the influence of technological context. A model of possible covariates was proposed that provides guidance for a structured investigation of the process of human adaptation to technology. This study is the first to provide a systematic overview and taxonomy of measures assessing perceived ageism. A systematic review according to PRISMA was conducted with the aim of descriptively presenting the body of existing perceived ageism measures. Of 14,135 identified articles, 95 were included. Our taxonomy sorted perceived ageism instruments according to forms of ageism (personal experience versus others’ experience); age group; context; global/situational; bene-/malevolent. Thirty-four multi-item measures were identified. The majority assessed global, malevolent forms of personally perceived experiences of ageism among older age groups in everyday life. Sufficient indicators of psychometric merit were only reported for few measures, including Nordic Age Discrimination Scale and Perceived Ageism Questionnaire. Despite the number of existing perceived ageism measures, only a few reported sufficient information on psychometric properties. This indicates the possibility of inaccurate prevalence estimates. Division of working and leisure spaces as an early product of modern life has still its traces on urban context. Campus spaces, not only universities, reflect such a programmed structure related to modern everyday life. This paper aims to discuss the changing relationship between working and leisure on varying campus spaces, which embrace these two essential components of modern societies. Many campuses in early Turkey follow similar modernist organisational principles in their design and performs an original path in spatial transformation. Industry, education, and public service campuses, which were established in İzmir during the 1950s, constitute the spatial framework of this paper. The paper aims to trace the leisure areas of three campuses and examine this meticulously programmed life idea under the influence of the changing leisure spatial culture in Turkey from the 1950s to today. These spaces are articulated and examined by their dwellings and social interaction spaces. Besides, the social experience and individual perspectives of campus users are documented and merged with the physical analysis of the working and leisure spaces. Discussing those examples in socio-spatial details underlines the transformation and dissolution of campus idea in urban life and exposes the unique experience of campus spaces of İzmir. Although refugees in the UK are highly susceptible to the triad of factors – low income, poor housing and high energy bills – that produce vulnerability to energy deprivation, literature on this issue is rare. We therefore propose a framework towards understanding the role of “non-energy” policies as drivers of energy deprivation among UK refugees, using the conceptual lenses of deservingness, welfare chauvinism and domicide to demonstrate how the condition has been deliberately produced under the UK government’s Hostile Environment approach. We argue that this approach not only damages the physical materiality of housing and the emotional space of home, but also deleteriously impacts upon refugees’ ability to access adequate energy services. Energy deprivation thus emerges as a hidden consequence of policies that normalize precarious housing, a denial of rights, and inadequate incomes, in which “home” becomes a site of exclusion that achieves the Hostile Environment’s goal – making everyday life unbearable. Both the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB) and daily life gait quality and quantity obtained from wearable sensors are used to measure functional status in older adults. It is generally assumed that they are interrelated and exchangeable, but this has not yet been established. Interchangeability of these measures would pave the way for remote monitoring of functional status. Are the SPPB and daily life gait quality and quantity measures correlated in community-dwelling older adults? The SPPB and gait quality and quantity data of 229 community-dwelling adults of 65 years or older were collected. The SPPB is a combined score of the Three Stage Balance test, Four Meter Walk test, and Five Times Sit to Stand test and ranges from 0 to 12. Participants wore a tri-axial inertial sensor for one week to assess gait quality (e.g. gait stability and smoothness) and quantity (e.g. number of strides). Correlation coefficients between SPPB scores and gait quality and quantity measures were assessed using Spearman's correlation. The median age of the study population was 76.2 years (IQR 72.6–81.0), and 76 % were women (n=175). The median SPPB score was 10 (IQR 8–11). Spearman's correlation coefficients between the SPPB and gait quality and quantity measures were all below 0.3. A possible explanation for the observed weak correlations is that the SPPB reflects one's maximal capacity, while gait quality and quantity reflect the submaximal performance in daily life. The SPPB and gait quality and quantity seem therefore distinct constructs with complementary value, rather than interchangeable. Peripheral neuropathy is a common complication of diabetes and increases the risk of falls, possibly through gait (quality) impairments in daily life. Characteristics of gait quality have been associated with peripheral neuropathy in a laboratory setting, but little is known about the more relevant association with gait quality in daily life. What is the association between peripheral neuropathy and gait quality characteristics in daily life in people with diabetes? Data from two cross-sectional studies were combined in an exploratory analysis, including a total of 98 participants with diabetes (mean age: 68 (SD 7) years, 32 females), of which 68 with peripheral neuropathy. Participants wore a tri-axial accelerometer for seven consecutive days. Walking episodes ≥5 seconds were identified and analysed to determine various gait quality characteristics. Associations were assessed using linear regression analyses, adjusted for walking speed and other potential confounders. Peripheral neuropathy was significantly associated with a lower walking speed (people with neuropathy: 0.81 vs without neuropathy: 0.88 m/s; β (95 % confidence interval (CI)): −0.114 (−0.202 to −0.026)), a lower stride frequency (0.81 vs 0.85 strides/s; β (95 % CI): −0.030 (−0.057 to −0.003)), lower gait intensity (i.e. lower root mean square) in vertical direction (1.38 vs 1.63 m/s2; β (95 % CI): −0.074 (−0.143 to −0.006)), and less gait symmetry (i.e. lower harmonic ratio) in vertical direction (1.82 vs 2.27; β (95 % CI): −0.322 (−0.474 to −0.170)). People with peripheral neuropathy had non-significantly poorer gait quality for most of the other 21 gait quality characteristics. Peripheral neuropathy seems to negatively affect several gait quality characteristics measured in daily life. This paper seeks to address some confusions and contestations surrounding Paul Gilroy's conceptualisation of conviviality. In particular, it seeks to argue that conviviality cannot be reduced to mere tentative co-existence, nor does it designate the absence of racism. Rather, it aims to demonstrate the messy complexity of everyday life, as people attempt to build lives alongside one another as they find themselves throwntogether on the margins of society. It does this through the qualitative exploration of fighters at a Polish-owned Muay Thai/Kickboxing gym in East London, where fighters enact what I refer to as "carnal conviviality", a form of intimate, bodily togetherness constituted through training to fight that bonds fighters across racial, ethnic, religious and gendered lines. Featured Application: This work allows for ultrasound imaging with wearable probes by roughly attaching them to the skin, facilitating the monitoring of the body internal tissues in daily life. Skin-attachable ultrasound probes face challenges in imaging the intended cross-section due to the difficulty in precisely adjusting the position and angle of attachment. While matrix element arrays are capable of imaging any cross-section within a three-dimensional field of view, their implementation presents a challenge due to the significant number of required ultrasound elements. We propose a method for optimizing the coordinates and shapes of elements based on the focusing quality onto the imaging points under the positional and angular errors in the element array. A 128-element array was optimized through the proposed method and its imaging performance was evaluated with simulated phantoms. The optimized array demonstrated the ability to clearly visualize the simulated wires, cysts, and blood vessels even with the positional error of 3 mm and the angular error of 20°. These results indicate the feasibility of developing a skin-attachable ultrasound probe that can be easily used in daily life without requiring precise positional and angular accuracy. The ability to maintain and manipulate sequential information in working memory, referred to as sequential working memory, plays a vital role in our daily life. While research has shown that methamphetamine abuse affects the neural substrates and the overall functioning of working memory, its specific impact on sequential working memory remains unclear. In this study, we asked 62 abstinent methamphetamine-dependent participants and 59 control participants to complete a digit ordering task in which they saw four digits one-by-one over time and subsequently rearranged them in ascending order. The four digits were presented either randomly in the experimental condition or in ascending order in the control condition. Resul ts show that methamphetamine-dependent participants performed worse than the controls in the experimental condition in which sequential working memory was needed to complete the task, but not in the control condition in which only short-term memory was needed. ABSTRACT Based on 35 comic strip dialogues with marginalized children in Italy, Norway and Slovenia, as well as three individual interviews with Italian practitioners, this article introduces a methodological approach that offers a ‘back door’ for exploring social problems embedded in the everyday lives of children. The analysis demonstrates the importance of adopting an everyday life perspective as an analytical strategy in conversations with children in marginalized life situations. This means shifting the focus away from solely examining risk factors and instead promoting a contextual understanding of risk, with an emphasis on amplifying the diverse voices of children. AbstractLocal institutions, values, and relations are vital to everyday life. But, post-conflict reconstruction programmes largely overlook them. Civilians cope with the damage to these aspects of life and revive socially. The question is how they do it and what significance it has. Drawing on a qualitative dataset of 31 interviews and 14 focus group discussions conducted in districts Dir, Swat, and Buner in northwestern Pakistan, where the Swat Conflict (2007-09) occurred, I argue that civilians make efforts to rebuild society socially. This process is termed post-conflict social revival. In areas where the conflict between Taliban insurgents and government security forces caused severe damage to society, the locals deployed mainly three strategies to gain social revival: forgiveness and forgetting, empathetic sensitivity, and greater spirituality. Historic street layouts are integral to historic districts’ tangible cultural heritage and are intricately linked to the residents’ daily lives; however, existing studies have only examined their spatial aspects, primarily using quantitative methods. Conversely, studies on tangible cultural heritage’s impact on residents’ lives have principally employed qualitative methods. Therefore, this study bridges qualitative and quantitative approaches to propose a layout – daily life model, which explains the relationship between the layout of Xi’an, China’s Sanxue Street historic and cultural district, and its residents’ daily lives. A combination of space syntax and geographic information system-based land-use analyses revealed that eating, shopping, calligraphy, and transportation were the main activities of residents. Questionnaire responses from 335 participants validated the proposed model and confirmed its feasibility. When certain types of facilities are widely distributed in streets with high choice and integration, residents’ daily lives tend to involve the functions represented by them. Furthermore, calligraphy is an important part of most residents’ daily lives, regardless of the transportation mode used. This paper looks into the life and ethnographic work of Leonore Kosswig (1904–1973), who lived in Turkey as a German exile from 1937 until her death in 1973. While her husband, Curt Kosswig was invited to Istanbul University as a full professor, Leonore had no institutional affiliation. However, she traveled with her husband around Anatolia and joined his fieldwork, during which she developed an interest in local customs and the daily life of villagers and nomadic tribes. Leonore decided to stay in Turkey after Curt’s return to Germany in 1955. Her excellent command of Turkish and former experience in fieldwork allowed her to become one of the first women to conduct ethnographic research in Turkey. Until her death, she pursued several pioneering research projects on wedding customs, tablet weaving, nomadic life, and ownership signs. Relying on her research publications and ego-documents, we employ a biographical approach to articulate upon her liminal existence in exile. In dialogue with research on twentieth century forced migrations that engage with the concepts of in-betweenness and liminality, we address Leonore’s liminal existences on the edge of two worlds on numerous planes. In particular, we argue that Kosswig’s liminality was reflected on her exilic existence in Istanbul as a foreign woman; her ethnographic research agenda into liminal geographic locations, marginalized communities, and disappearing cultural artifacts; and her gendered navigation of foreignness and nativeness. The existence of self-control failures is often used to legitimize public policy interventions. The argument is that reducing self-control failures can make people better off, as judged by themselves. However, there is only scarce evidence on the frequency and welfare costs of self-control failures. This paper presents a survey method that allows us to measure self-control failures in everyday life and to identify their welfare costs in terms of associations with experienced subjective well-being. I analyzed a corpus of the international English language testing system (IELTS) comprising 256 listening sections (1996–2021). The primary objective of the study was to gain insights into the assumptions made by test designers regarding the real-life contexts that test-takers will encounter. Overall, 15 superordinate topic areas and 300 subtopics were identified in the corpus. There was relatively more diversity in topic coverage before 2000. However, the test did not incorporate texts that would address sociocultural matters related to local or international contexts. Additionally, English-as-L2 accents were virtually unrepresented with only three samples from 514 speakers, potentially suggesting a racialized perspective on the listening construct. I argue that it is possible that this way of testing promotes and normalizes test designers' ideologies, while overlooking the importance of the diversity of domains that test-takers will encounter in daily life. I discuss the potential construction of test-takers' identity through exposure to these topics and suggest that test designers may consider reevaluating topic and accent coverage in the test to improve fairness and equity in the test.
