When it comes to the field of literature the first thing which comes to mind is reading different literary works from the different genres; however, literature means the development of communication between individuals of different cultures and societies; this is against the past knowledge that linguistics was regarded as a tool to teach languages. Through the study of language, imagination can hardly be developed, and vocabulary development would be something so difficult to accomplish; in contrast, literary works will help learners of any language to adapt to the real world through language competence and knowledge since language and literature have an intimate role. The paper aims at improving the English language and understanding the cultural background of the language through literature. Another objective will be the improvement of personal imagination and emotion and provide the opportunity to use the language through the words that will be learned in different literary works effectively. Furthermore, further ideas will be given to utilize critical thinking.

Summary: An ethno-medicinal survey was conducted in District Swabi, Pakistan. Data were collected through field assessment as well as from traditional healers and local inhabitants by conducting personal interviews and questionnaires. Information about 63 medicinal plants belonging to 36 families was recorded. Some plants including Foeniculum vulgare Mill. (Apiaceae), Curcuma longa L. (Zingiberaceae), Cuscuta reflexa L. (Cuscutaceae), Fagonia arabica L. (Zygophyllaceae), Lepidium sativum L. (Apiaceae), Mirabilis jalapa L. (Nyctaginaceae), Ricinus communis L. (Euphorbiaceae), Tamarix aphylla L. (Tamaricaceae), Tribulus terrestris L. (Zygophyllaceae) and Zingiber officinale L. (Zingiberaceae) were found to be of great pharmacological interest for novel compounds and substitute for the antibiotics. Industrial relevance: Medicinal plants are still widely used for the treatment of different ailments in the area of Swabi, therefore survey of medicinal flora should be carried out to explore and bring up-to-date the catalogue of existing natural plant resources of the area especially in agricultural country like Pakistan. Small scale government processing units of agroforestry should be implemented to reduce the overuse and motivate the cultivation of valuable medicinal plants. Majority of the people use various formulations of medicinal plants for different ailments treatment. The phytochemicals greatly varied in medicinal plants and cause a marvelous effect on human illnesses. The objective of the present study was to document the information of folk medicines, its identification, collection of samples, study of its chemical constituents and uses by the local people of District Swabi, Pakistan.

AFRICAN philosophy ,FOUNDATIONALISM (Theory of knowledge) ,UNIVERSALISM (Philosophy) ,MORAL relativism ,ETHNOPHILOSOPHY - Abstract
In line with the tradition of the Conversational School of Philosophy, this essay provides a rare and unique space of discourse for the authors to converse about the place of the 'ethno' in African philosophy. This conversation is a revisit, a renewal of the key positions that have coloured the ethnophilosophy debate by the conversers who themselves are notable contributors to arguments for and against the importance of ethnophilosophy in the unfolding of African philosophy particularly in the last decade or so. There are four key positions that have been argued for in the pages of this paper: (1) ethnophilosophy is not African philosophy and it is useless and inimical to the growth of African philosophy and should thus be jettisoned -- Matolino; (2) ethnophilosophy is the foundation for African philosophy as it provides the raw materials for African philosophical discourse -- Ogbonnaya and Agada; (3) ethnophilosophy has some value for African philosophy but it is definitely not the foundation for genuine African philosophy the way criticism and rigours are -- Attoe; and (4) ethnophilosophy can be adequately conceived as African philosophy particularly in terms of its etymology as culture or race philosophy, dealing with a philosophical or critical reflections on, and exposition of, immanent principles in African thought -- Mangena and Etieyibo. These conversers provide good arguments for the positions they hold, arguments that are of course, open for further interrogation. Two points can be concluded from the ethnophilosophy debate provided in this essay: (1) the disparities in views among conversers it seems, stem ultimately from the understanding of ethnophilosophy that each converser holds, which varies from the notion of a method used at some point in the history of African philosophy, to an etymological understanding as culture philosophy; and (2) the debate about ethnophilosophy in the spirit of any philosophical tradition remains a perennial one that is yet to be concluded. This essay certainly concretises what is on ground and paves the way for further discussions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study attempts to shift the debate of the contemporary facets of populist ideologies from the realm of institutional politics to the realm of everyday life, popular culture, media and “invented traditions”. My intention is to demonstrate how these realms generate new sources and voices of populism, often downplayed in the academic debates on the subject. The paper stems from comprehensive research on discourses of identity (re)construction in post-Yugoslav Serbia as communicated in pop-cultural media forms (specifically, music videos of all genres), in which I used a sample of 4733 music videos produced between 1980 and 2010 (and later). In this paper, I have chosen to focus on the case of the charity campaign Podignimo Stupove and its music video output. The campaign was launched as a pop-cultural initiative to help the restoration of the 12th century monastery Đurđevi Stupovi in Stari Ras, a site of utmost historical significance and value for the national culture. Against the background of institutional changes that markedly redefined the place of religion in Serbian post-socialist society, the music videos discussed in this paper provide a valuable insight into the combined musical, textual and visual language of communication of some longstanding notions associated with “Serbian populism”.

It is part of the need to continue the legacy of Efraim Hernandez Xolocotzi on traditional agricultural technology, as a paradigm for research, teaching and extension in the field of our country, for this the Etnoagronomia is proposed as one of the ethnosciences to develop and league necessarily technological, economic, social and cultural matter of peasants with development proposals. In our experience of several research with this approach, we found the persitencia and dominance of traditional agricultural technology in rural production in Mexico, with persistence of traditional knowledge related to the knowledge of natural resources, genetic diversity of cultivated and exploited wild species management technology, existence of traditional tools, presence of propitiatory rituals, agricultural calendars, forms of transmission of knowledge. As for rural development initiatives with the participation of rural communities we have found that the recognition of knowledge and its use for development proposals in participatory processes resulting in projects ethnodeveloment, local development, sustainable development, agricultural development, inter alia, the interests of the actors.

This article focuses on Serbian composer Jovana Backović and her band/project Arhai, founded in Belgrade in 1998. The central argument is that Arhai made a transition from being regarded a part of the Serbian ethno music scene (which flourished during the 1990s and 2000s) to becoming a part of the global world music scene, after Jovana Backović moved from her native Serbia to the United Kingdom to pursue an international career. This move did not imply a fundamental change of her musical style, but a change of cultural context and market conditions that, in turn, affected her cultural identity. Upon the application of the figurative-procedural model, in this article, we focus on the Afro-Bahian musical band and carnival group Olodum as heuristic of the correlations between culture, politics and economics. These are triangulations through which the group has achieved national and international recognition for its recreational-artistic presentations. We discuss how, in this aesthetical presentations, policies of meaning were engaged with human rights and black cultural identities and expressions as well. Along the text, identity propositions of this cultural association are discussed in the light of the position Olodum has in the ethno-popular field, social realm in which properties of scarceness and affluence become accomplices.

This paper explores two oppositional binaries for Latino immigrants in the U.S.; first, in terms of religiosity, where Latin Americans are assumed Catholics, while "Americans" are most often understood as Protestants, and second, through sexuality, where Latin American sexual behavior is often contrasted to identity based U.S. gay and lesbian social movements. This paper engages in the intersectionality of religion, migration, ethno-racial politics, and sexuality with Latin Americans in the U.S., and attempts to respond to the foundation of those oppositional practices. Much literature on migration, Latinos, and religion is used in order to discuss these points. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Disputed space perceived by the parties as non-negotiable due to its sacred or symbolic character can be referred to as territorial absolutes; of all ethno-political conflicts, those over territorial absolutes are often the most difficult to resolve. What complicates the prospects for negotiation and bargaining in these conflicts is that the absolute nature of the stake is comprised of a combination of different dimensions: ethnic, historic and sacred/symbolic. Because of the close connection between the absolute and these dimensions, such spaces often take on divine character, insulating them from partition into sub-units that would allow for bargaining and compromise. However, ethnic conflicts over territorial absolutes are not primarily over religion or ethnicity; they are political conflicts over the control of territory, albeit with strong ethnic and religious characteristics. This is a conceptual study of territorial absolutes, which focuses on the creation of absolute space, as well as the processes that combine to give such "sacred stones" its special character. By identifying what goes into the making of sacred, absolute space, we will better be able to rise to the challenge of managing conflicts over absolute space, as well as prevent them from re-erupting in the future. In Senegal, French is the official language (de jure) and Wolof is the de facto lingua franca. This paper suggests that the current Wolofization phenomenon (in which one does not have to belong to the Wolof ethnic group in order to speak Wolof as one’s mother tongue) is symptomatic of Wolof agents co-opting the French technology of nationalism or Frenchification process (1891-1960) and promoting the Wolofization process during the colonial and post-independence periods. The phrase ‘technology of nationalism’ is a reference to how the french colonial state tried to create Black Frenchmen and Frenchwomen, nominally speakig, in Senegal’s Four Communes (Saint-Louis, Dakar, Goree, and Rufisque). Does the current Wolofization phenomenon suggest that the Frenchification process (of converting Senegalese ‘into Frenchmen’) during the colonial period failed? During the French colonial period (1891-1960), the linkage between ethnicity and language, namely being Wolof and speaking the Wolof language, in an urban setting became more tenuous whereas in a rural setting the linkage becmae more intertwined. The Wolofization process as it related to the Wolof language and Wolof ethnicity was both an urbanesque and elite (vertically-based) phenomenon. This same process as it related to the Wolof language and one fo the Sufi brotherhoods (namely the Mouride brotherhood) became a more horizontally-based, rural peasentry phenomenon. However, on an intra-ethnic level, the Wolof ethnic membership became wed to or predetermined one’s religious order membership in such a way that ‘to be Wolof is necessarily to be Muslim.’ What are the Pan-African implications fo the Wolofication (peasants into Senegalese) phenomenon? States worry greatly about secessionist movements and the ethno-political mobilizations that can give rise to them. Political scientists agree that the institutional framework within which identity groups interact powerfully determines the goals, violence, and trajectories of such movements. However, both small N and large N researchers disagree on the question of whether ?power-sharing? arrangements, instead of repression, are more or less likely to mitigate threats of secessionist mobilizations by disaffected, regionally concentrated minority groups. Using the PS-I modeling platform, a virtual country?Beita?was created, containing within it a disaffected, partially controlled, regionally concentrated minority. Using the tenets of constructivist identity theory as the basic driver for the algorithms controlling behavior by agents in the Beita ?landscape,? the most popular theoretical positions on this issue were tested. Data from experiments involving hundreds of histories of Beita, run under modulated, controlled conditions, lend support to some of the more sophisticated interpretations of the effects of repression vs. responsive or representative types of power-sharing. While in the short run repression works to suppress ethno-political mobilization, it does not effectively reduce the threat of secession. Power-sharing can be more effective, but it also tends to encourage larger minority identitarian movements. Check author’s web site for an updated version of the paper. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ethno ,Ethnofonik ,non-formal education ,professional development ,youth work - Abstract
Growing awareness of the need for intercultural learning in musicians' professional development in the globalized world produced many ideas and practices both in formal and non-formal education. These ideas arised from developments in ethnomusicology, world music and education in general, with special emphasis on the lifelong learning, intercultural education and education for active and democratic citizenship. In that sense, some of the non-formal youth music programs arised as opportunities for youth empowerment and creating intercultural dialogue. The potential of music to explore and give value to cultural diversity, as well as to change social climate, is recognized in the Ethno World youth program, organised worldwide by Jeunesses Musicales International since 1990. The program gathers young musicians aged 13-30 in annual international summer music camps, where they share traditional, folk and world music from their cultures, with a mission to revive and keep alive global cultural heritage. What emerged in more than 30 years of Ethno is the need for educating 'Ethno artistic mentors', skilled professionals who facilitate the youth gatherings usually in collaborative way. Many of them make a transition from participant to mentor position within the years of attending the Ethno gatherings, but the program can also be a great upgrade for those musicians and music educators, who are trained in the formal education systems, to expand their professional horizons on youth work. In last 10 years there are specialised trainings created to offer pedagogical insights into approaches to learning and facilitation used in Ethno. This research presents an exploratory case study which was conducted at Ethnofonik AllStars training in November/December 2017 in Paris, in order to describe and evaluate Ethnofonik, a non- formal training orginally made for musicians who want to become or already are Ethno artistic mentors. The research is examining three dimensions of the Ethnofonik training: (1) the value and position of the training in musicians' professional development ; (2) development of the Ethnofonik training in the context of Ethno gatherings ; (3) development of the training in the context of connections with the vertical formal education system. Questions arised during this pilot research are: (1) What is the scope of the Ethnofonik training? (2) To what extent Ethnofonik follows the Ethno gathering concept (does it offer competences which are over-growing the Ethno concept)? (3) Is the Ethnofonik training model relevant to other contexts? To answer these questions qualitative methodology was used. Besides content analysis and process observation, the research is enriched with five semi-structured interviews conducted with the leadership team. Results are analyzed by thematic coding and they offer a insights for further development of similar trainings, as well as re- thinking the system of higher music education in the direction of collaborations with non-formal sector.

Throughout its development as an international law principle, there prevailed an assumption that self-determination gives rise to secession. This assumption, which has fuelled the most violent ethno-national conflicts in modern history, is however mislead-ing. Self-determination does not lead to secession. Self-determination is conceptually and legally separate and independent from secession. Its association with secession actually makes self-determination a legal anomaly. Whether a "nation" can secede is not a func-tion of self-determination but is dictated by an entirely different variable - effective power or authority in international politics. There is a need to break the link between self-determination and secession, and instead recognise self-determination as a human right per se rather than a principle that justifies, confuses, and exacerbates ethno-national conflicts. The result is a change in our way of understanding, and hopefully resolving, existing secessionist struggles and ethno-national conflicts worldwide. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Serbian hip hop scene rose during the nineties and quickly blossomed into several historical, stylistic and ideological orientations, sometimes seen as "waves" in popular, emic discourse of hip-hop fans. Its grasp over the concept of authenticity mostly deals with the construction of an imagined, localized "ghetto", ranging from urban neighborhoods of Belgrade to an idea of neoliberal Serbia as ghettoized state and cultural territory where various forms of resistance take place. In the present dispersion of the scene, discourse on ethnicity (and locality) can be pinpointed as an important, albeit not overtly dominant axis of Serbian hip-hop, that yet steadily gains recognition. This reach towards ethnicity initially was propagated by the members of rap collectives such as Belgrade based Beogradski sindikat, and in recent years followed by other hip-hop performers as well. Although the idea of national culture thus became visible in overall discourse of hip hop community, the use of particular local, "ethnic" sounds, motives and manners wasn't so common for rap songs. However, this has been changing recently, as so called "ethno" music consisting of neotraditional or popularized local traditional music forms, became a source for rap music's current endeavor to propose a viable alternative to dominant political and cultural discourses - both dominant ones and those within rap. Serbian hip hop performers use ethnic music as a clear indexical sign pointing toward the authenticity and historicity of traditional music, and thus attempt to add a "flavor" or a local rendition to globalized, popular and common rap tropes and sounds. The songs "Next year in Prizren" by group Beogradski sindikat and Nikac od Rovina by rapper RIZBOw SENSEI can be taken as separate case studies that indicate how Serbian rap music utilizes sounds labeled as ethnic, as well as the forms of cooperation with hip-hop 'outsiders', in order to promote a powerful call of interpellation possibly reaching beyond the community of 'hip-hop nation'.

Ethno Estonia youth music camp has for more than two decades built a (g)local community, successfully bridging borders between formal, non- formal and informal education in the country. The camp itself links all Estonian institutions and NGOs connected with the folk music with Viljandi Folk Music Festival and gathers people of diverse ages, cultural, musical and educational backgrounds. The purpose of this pilot case study is to explore the significance and impact of the Ethno Estonia experience for participants and volunteers-participants, as well as for the local community. The report is based on the historical background, people’s experiences and theoretical insights from democratic music pedagogies, community music and service-learning. Using qualitative methodological approach, the research examines the impact that Ethno has on the local community, participants’ musical, personal and social development, as well as on the participant- volunteers’ development, who through service- learning connect organizers and artistic leaders’ teams with the group of participants. Besides connection between folk music university and music schools which send their students to the Ethno Estonia camp (and vice versa), this report presents narratives of four participants. As trained classical musicians with different cultural identities, each participant challenges themselves by entering the Ethno world of experiment, curiosity and sharing. The data is collected through participant observation, individual and group semi-structured interviews, audio-visual documentation (July 2019) and follow- up evaluation after the camp (September/October 2019). The research suggests that Ethno Estonia is an example of good practice, pointing towards the positive development of‘ethno-ecosystems’ in the local communities.

This article focuses on Serbian composer Jovana Backovic and her band/project Arhai, founded in Belgrade in 1998. The central argument is that Arhai made a transition from being regarded a part of the Serbian ethno music scene (which flourished during the 1990s and 2000s) to becoming a part of the global world music scene, after Jovana Backovic moved from her native Serbia to the United Kingdom to pursue an international career. This move did not imply a fundamental change of her musical style, but a change of cultural context and market conditions that, in turn, affected her cultural identity. Ethno veterinary study on plants of Chail valley was conducted during 2013-2014.55 plants species belonging to 46 families were studied i.e. 4 species in Asteraceae, 3 in Euphorbiaceous and 3 in Lamiaceae. Rest of the families contain two or single species. Among the recorded plants fifty one species are Dicots and four are monocots. In all these plants species about 40 are herbs, 9 are shrubs and 6 are Trees. Some species are commercially collected in the Chail valley like Dioscorea deltoidea, Skimmia laureola, Saussurea atkinsonii, Paeonia emodi, Podophyllum emodi, Rheum emodi and Thymus linearis. All these medicinal plants are extensively used. Most people of the area depend on live stocks. Because of poverty, exploitation of wild life, erosion deforestation, and unauthorized collection, most of the plant species are threatened slowly and gradually. Valuable medicinal plants and locally knowledge is disappearing. In Chail valley most of the women and children are involved in the collection of different medicinal plants for selling and local uses. 31. Ethno-Using Borders as Bridges

- Abstract
The classrooms of today represents a variety of different cultures, a facet that is often problematized. This research explores how a multicultural context can be used as resource, instead of an obstacle. By investigating this theme, I have been conducting research on the concept of Ethno-camps – trying to identify the key aspects of these, and discuss whether or not these key aspects can be transferred to other forms of music education. The qualitative data for the study was collected between 2015-2016 and is composed of interviews, participant observations and a visual ethnography. Recurring themes of importance found in the data is aspects of cultural diversity, environment, social interaction between participants, learning traditional music by ear or having a peer-learning approach to teaching music. The results discussion features the erudition what the key aspects of Ethno are, but also that an important aspect is the interplay between these aspects. Considering that all these facets are in constant interplay with each other, the true effects of an Ethno could be limited to its own context – thereby making it difficult to be transmitted in its entirety to other settings., Dagens klassrum representerar en mängd olika kulturer, något som ofta problematiseras.

The chapter examines relations between Croatian popular music and Croatian state policies, in a sense in which they represent a locked-in whole, or, using Laclau & Mouffe's term, a 'hegemonic universality'. A hegemonic relation, i.e. one "by which a certain particularity assumes the representation of a universality entirely incommensurable with it" (Laclau & Mouffe, 2001, x) is analysed through the discourse of popular music which hereby serves the function of an indirect lens with an additional mirroring effect. The goal is to break down the hermetic and empirically confusing notion of totality to a matrix of elements and forces which render it possible. For that purpose, the chapter points to formative agents on the popular scene, observing their function(s) within the matrix and pointing to a disrupted primary relation between the field of popular music and its supposed content and function (music and entertainment), in favour of a secondary, political relation.
