The artificial light source is one of the most important factors in a controlled environment for vegetable production. It could provide new opportunities to improve growth and increase phytochemicals content in vegetables. Therefore, this study focused on the effects of artificial light sources on growth and phytochemicals in green oak lettuce (Lactuca sativa). The plants were grown under growth chamber with three artificial light sources, namely bar-LED (the 1:1:1 ratio of blue 460 nm : red 630 nm : red 660 nm), bulb-LED (the 2:1:1 ratio of blue 460 nm : red 630 nm : red 660 nm), and fluorescent lamp (FL) (the wavelength range 380-700 nm) for 4 weeks. The quality of bar-LED light was better than either bulb-LED or FL, when assessed by the parameters of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD, 400-700 nm), PPFD-B (blue, 400-500 nm), PPFD-R (red, 600-700 nm), the yield photon flux density (YPFD), and the color of red. However, shoot and root (fresh and dry mass), leaf area, leaf number, and shoot/root ratio did not significantly differ between plants grown under bar-LED and bulb-LED, but they were significantly higher than plants grown under FL. Bulb-LED and bar-LED induced larger dry mass of the plants than FL. The dry mass per mole of artificial lighting was highest in plants grown under bar-LED. On the other hand, the fresh mass per mole of artificial lighting was highest in plants grown under bulb-LED. As regards power consumption, bar-LED provided the lowest consumption with 44.4% energy saving over the FL. Total phenolic content, 2,2’-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) (ABTS) and 2,2-diphenylpicrylhydrazyl (DPPH) activities were highest in plants grown under bar-LED. FL lighting gave the least contents of chlorophyll a and chlorophyll a + b. However, chlorophyll b and carotenoid contents did not significantly differ among the treatments. Thus, the results suggested that bar-LED has the potential to improve energy saving, and both growth and phytochemicals content of green oak lettuce grown in a controlled environment of vegetable production. RESUMO A fonte de luz artificial é um dos fatores mais importantes em um ambiente controlado para a produção de vegetais. Ela pode melhorar o crescimento e aumentar o conteúdo de fitoquímicos nos vegetais. Portanto, este estudo enfocou os efeitos de fontes de luz artificiais no crescimento e fitoquímicos em alface green oak (Lactuca sativa). As plantas foram cultivadas em câmara de crescimento com três fontes de luz artificial, a saber: bar-LED (proporção 1:1:1 de azul 460 nm: vermelho 630 nm: vermelho 660 nm), bulb-LED (proporção 2:1:1 de azul 460 nm: vermelho 630 nm: vermelho 660 nm) e lâmpada fluorescente (FL) (faixa de comprimento de onda 380-700 nm) por 4 semanas. A qualidade da luz de bar-LED foi melhor que a de bulb-LED ou FL, quando avaliada pelos parâmetros de radiação fotossinteticamente ativa (PAR), densidade de fluxo de fótons fotossintéticos (PPFD, 400-700 nm), PPFD-B (azul, 400-500 nm), PPFD-R (vermelho, 600-700 nm), densidade do fluxo de fótons (YPFD) e cor vermelha. No entanto, a parte aérea e a raiz (massa fresca e seca), a área foliar, o número de folhas e a relação parte aérea/raiz não diferiram significativamente entre as plantas cultivadas sob bar-LED e bulb-LED, mas foram significativamente maiores que as plantas cultivadas sob FL. O bulb-LED e o bar-LED induziram maior massa seca das plantas que o FL. A massa seca por mole de iluminação artificial foi maior nas plantas cultivadas sob bar-LED. Por outro lado, a massa fresca por mole de iluminação artificial foi maior nas plantas cultivadas sob bulb-LED. Em relação ao consumo de energia, o bar-LED forneceu o menor consumo, com 44,4% de economia de energia em relação ao FL. O conteúdo fenólico total, as atividades 2,2’-azino-bis (ácido 3-etilbenztiazolina-6-sulfônico) (ABTS) e 2,2-difenilpicliril-hidrazil (DPPH) foram maiores nas plantas cultivadas sob bar-LED. A iluminação FL resultou em menor conteúdo de clorofila a e clorofila a + b. No entanto, os teores de clorofila b e carotenóide não diferiram significativamente entre os tratamentos. Assim, os resultados sugeriram que o bar-LED tem potencial para maior economia de energia e o conteúdo de fitoquímicos e crescimento de alface green oak cultivada em ambiente controlado de produção vegetal.

Improving plant germination is essential to guarantee better quality seedlings. Thus, this research aimed to evaluate whether the seed priming with light quality (LIQ) and the aqueous extract of Cyperus rotundus (AEC) tuber could modulate the germination and initial growth of Moringa oleifera L. seedlings. The experimental design was a completely randomized in the 4x4 factorial scheme, composed of four LIQ conditions (white, blue, red, and distant red light) and four AEC concentrations (0, 25, 50 and 100%). Seed priming with red light reduced the average emergence time, while blue, red, and extreme red lights associated with 50% of aqueous extract of C. rotundus increased shoot initial length and photosynthetic pigment accumulation. Seed priming with blue light resulted in seedlings with a shorter final shoot length. However, application of 100% of aqueous extract of C. rotundus reversed this. The white light in combination with concentrations of 50 and 100% of AEC promoted a higher relative shoot growth rate of seedlings. The research revealed that seed priming with light quality and aqueous extracts of C. rotundus tubers modulates the germination and initial growth of M. oleifera seedlings. More work needs to be done to determine the responsible compounds in AEC that is responsible for priming growth as phytohormones. Resumo A melhoria da germinação de plantas é fundamental para garantia de mudas de melhor qualidade. Assim, objetivou-se avaliar se o condicionamento de sementes com qualidade de luz (light quality - LIQ) e extrato aquoso de tubérculos de Cyperus rotundus (AEC) modula a germinação e o crescimento inicial de plântulas de Moringa oleifera. Utilizou-se delineamento inteiramente casualizado, em esquema fatorial 4x4, sendo quatro condições de LIQ (luz branca, azul, vermelha e vermelho distante) e quatro concentrações de AEC (0, 25, 50 e 100%). O condicionamento de sementes com luz vermelha reduziu o tempo médio de emergência, enquanto que as luzes azul, vermelha e vermelho extremo associadas a 50% de extrato aquoso de C. rotundus aumentaram o comprimento inicial da parte aérea e o acúmulo de pigmentos fotossintéticos. Condicionamento de sementes com luz azul induziu a formação de plântulas com menor comprimento final da parte aérea, no entanto, a aplicação de 100% de extrato aquoso de C. rotundus reverteu o menor crescimento. A luz branca associada às concentrações de 50 e 100% de fitormônios promoveu maior taxa de crescimento relativo da parte aérea de plântulas. Nossa pesquisa mostra que o condicionamento de sementes com radiação espectral de luz e extrato aquoso de tubérculos de Cyperus rotundus modula a germinação e o crescimento inicial de plântulas de Moringa oleifera. Mais trabalhos precisam ser feitos para determinar os compostos do AEC responsáveis que que atuam como fitormônios e são responsáveis pelo crescimento inicial.

O jundiá é uma espécie para produção no sul da América do Sul - sendo assim apta a cultivo em qualquer região de clima temperado e subtropical. Com o objetivo de desenvolver um manejo de luz para o jundiá durante sua manutenção em tanques internos e de entender a relação entre as cores de luz e o bem-estar da espécie, alevinos foram exposto por 10 dias à luz branca, azul e verde. No 10° dia de exposição às diferentes cores de luz, um estressor agudo foi imposto. Uma hora após a aplicação do estressor, os peixes foram amostrados e a resposta ao estresse medida por meio da determinação da concentração sérica de cortisol. Nossos resultados mostraram que a luz verde parece ser a pior alternativa para iluminar instalações internas ou de transporte de jundiás. Os resultados também sugerem que a cor da luz afeta a resposta ao estresse dos jundiás, conhecimento que pode ser útil no manejo da espécie. This paper provides the first data about physiological responses to stress in jundiá (Rhamdia quelen) exposed to different light colours. Jundiá is a species for fish production in the southern part of South America - and suitable for any region with a temperate or subtropical climates. In order to develop a light management for jundiá fingerlings during indoor maintenance and to understand the relationship between welfare and light colour in the jundiá, fingerlings were exposed to white, blue and green light. At the 10th day of light exposure an acute stressor was imposed. One hour after the application of the stressor, fish were sampled. Stress was assessed by means of cortisol determination. Our results show that green light seems to be the worst alternative to illuminate jundiá indoor experimentation facilities, or even fish transportation. The results also suggests that colour affects the stress response of jundia, and may be usefull for the management of this species. RESUMO- O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar os efeitos da cobertura de videira ?Cabernet Sauvignon? com lona plástica translúcida sobre a disponibilidade de luz e água, a concentração foliar de clorofila e a fotossíntese. As plantas com cinco anos de idade foram conduzidas em sistema ?Y? sobre porta-enxerto Paulsen 1103. O experimento seguiu o delineamento em blocos ao acaso, com dois tratamentos (plantas sem e com cobertura plástica) e quatro repetições de 15 plantas (unidade experimental). A cobertura plástica reduziu o suprimento às plantas de radiações ultravioleta (UV), azul, verde, vermelho, vermelho distante e total (300-750 nm), bem como a disponibilidade hídrica nas camadas superficiais do solo (0-30 cm). As plantas cobertas apresentaram maior taxa fotossintética máxima e condutância estomática em relação às plantas descobertas. Os pontos de compensação e de saturação de luz, a eficiência quântica aparente, a respiração no escuro, a concentração foliar de clorofilas e o potencial hídrico foliar de base não foram influenciados pelo uso da cobertura plástica. A cobertura plástica reduziu a radiação e a disponibilidade hídrica nas camadas superficiais do solo, porém favoreceu a assimilação foliar de CO2. WATER SUPPLY, SOLAR RADIATION AND PHOTOSYNTHESIS IN ?CABERNET SAUVIGNON? GRAPEVINES UNDER PLASTIC COVERING ABSTRACT - The objective of this work was to assess the effects of translucent plastic overhead cover on light and water supply of vineyard and leaf chlorophyll content and photosynthesis in grapevines. Fiveyear-old ?Cabernet Sauvignon? grapevines (Vitis vinifera L.) grafted on Paulsen 1103 rootstock and raised as ?Y? management system were used. The experiment followed a randomized block design, with two treatments (uncovered and covered plants) and four replicates of 15 plants (experimental unit). The plastic cover reduced the supply of ultraviolet (UV), blue, green, red, far red, and total (300-750 nm) radiation to the plants, as well as the water availability at the superficial soil layers (0-30 cm). Covered plants had higher values of maximum photosynthesis and leaf stomatal conductance than uncovered ones. The values for light compensation and saturation points, apparent quanta efficiency, dark respiration, leaf chlorophyll content, and basal leaf water potential were not affected by the use of plastic cover. The plastic covering reduced the light supply and water availability at the superficial soil layers, but improved leaf assimilation of CO2 .
