The Human Body has been expressed in the field of spatial design as an insight into a consideration of space through understanding the occupant as a key driver for architectural space making. Past practice in this field have been heavily focussed on the production of art installations, exhibitions and interior focussed outcomes, much less so at an architectural scale. The intuition of the human body through reaction and response to interaction, along with a sensual understanding of space creates the possibilities to design for the user. Understanding the body and its impact on space as a form of testing parameters and limitations is an intimacy too often neglected in the architectural scale. Primarily this thesis explores the ways in which the human body and its movement in space can challenge the way we think about the built form at an architectural scale. It will produce a strategy formed by an interpretation of the body and movement and its relationship to architecture as a primary focus. With this new way of generating a design outcome, this thesis explores strengths and weaknesses of this strategy through an application into the field of theatre and performance design. The theatre as an application will set out an interpretation as to how the strategy can be applied to a specific region within architecture. Outlining the importance of methodology in conveying the Architect's mind through representation, this thesis explores the art of hand drawing as a means of direct embodied response from the architect to the occupants for space. To determine the validity of this strategy this thesis defines how this way of designing can be interpreted to other fields within architecture, to move forward in offering a body centred design strategy.

This thesis uses design based research to meet the challenge of urban densification. It proposes an approach for higher density housing development that enhances livability, achieves compactness and responds to a city's unique landscape. To accommodate an increasing amount of people within the city, strategies and experimentation into the density of built form contributing to the urban fabric must be explored. The design based research addresses how improvements can be made upon an existing site through the reconfiguration of built form with an analysis into density, topography, existing natural ecologies and the key components fundamental to a successful urban and public realm.

En définitive l'esprit des lieux, « flexible et soumis à l'occasion » - pour paraphraser une expres- sion de Francis Bacon -, décline un éventail de figures dont l'ouvrage commence à faire l'inventaire.

Increasing population and changing family demographics are driving the need for new and more sustainable housing solutions. Medium-density housing is recognised as a sustainable approach to accommodate future growth within urban centres, challenging suburban sprawl and creating efficient, affordable dwelling. This thesis explores a process to generate a more progressive approach to medium density housing, favouring individual personalisation over inflexible environments that package the occupier. Through the review of precedents, successful principles were used in a series of design studies that examined the potential for gridded spaces to satisfy flexibility and variation, opportunities for community interaction and integration beyond the site. The design resolution was reached through applying those principles on a residential site in Wellington New Zealand. The final design proposes a new approach to housing through the 'half a good house' mantra where the bounds of the home are defined volumetrically (the first half), but the internal spaces and walls are free for the occupier to continually adapt depending on their unique and changing needs. The general principles of the design can be applied to other Wellington sites and contexts. They can also be applied in other cities with similar urban housing problems in New Zealand and Australia. If successful, the principles could be developed into a viable solution to the varying and changing needs in future housing.

The issue of abandoned retail stores is one that is evident throughout the country and at different scales throughout the world. The appearance leaves main streets and central business districts' looking tired and run down and does little to benefit the local economy. The rise and demand of international retail corporations in provincial cities, has transformed inner city infrastructure. This combined with suburban sprawl has resulted in high building vacancies and poor community moral. Looking to new theories around Urban Interior Architecture, this research explores the boundary between internal and external design methods and pushes for a merger of the design disciplines to create a coherent spatial context. In order to repopulate the city, human focused design methods are explored to encourage social interactions, commercial activity and habitation of the many vacant sites. Through the use of site-specific design, Rotorua will be investigated to understand the reasoning for the abandoned stores and will look to the urban context to identify potential remedies to solve the neglect. The identity of Rotorua its Placemaking and Cultural Heritage of its people will inform the design response to bring the community back into the heart of the central city.

Scholars of management and organization studies have become increasingly interested in space and spatial dynamics. The organization of space, the distribution of artifacts, and, more generally the very materiality of work, have become recognized as key dimensions of organizational life (Clegg and Kornberger, 2006; Dale and Burrell, 2008; Yanow and Marrewjik, 2010). Organizational spaces are not merely the context in which practices unfold, but they also shape and are shaped by these practices (Yanow and Marrewjik, 2010). Scholarship on science, technology and society (STS) has long theorized the importance of the mutual constitution of materiality and human agency to understand organizational dynamics, and has viewed materiality and space, in particular, as deeply entangled in every aspect of human life (Latour, 2005; Pickering, 1995; Knorr-Cetina, 1997). This idea of the entanglement between the material world and the organizational one has become recognized as important in organizational scholarship. This growing interest in sociomateriality (Orlikowski, 2007; Leonardi and Barley, 2008; Leonardi, 2011) has not yet fully been reflected in the institutional literature. The flourishing literature on institutional logics draws upon a terminology that acknowledges ‘the materiality’ of logics (see Jones et al., 2013; Thornton et al. 2012), but it has conceptualized materiality in discursive and structural terms at the expense of its tangible and physical aspects. The connections between sociomateriality and institutional logics have thus not been much examined theoretically or empirically, except for a few, very recent, studies that have recognized the role of artifacts and space in institutional processes (see de Vaujany and Vaast, 2013). This gap in the literature has recently been noted. Friedland (2012) for instance laments that scholars of logics have come to emphasize language and the ideational while artifacts have remained “inert and invisible” (Friedland, 2012, p. 590). Along similar lines, Jones et al (2013) argue that the material dimension of logics “has been surprisingly overlooked” (p. 52) and that objects “have been peripheral to the arguments of those [institutional] articles that focus instead on structures and practices.” (p 53). At the same time, sociomaterial research has not yet much ventured in the realm of institutions, focusing instead on how the material and the social mutually constitute each other and shape organizational practices. Examining how organizational space gets endowed with institutional meaning and how institutional logics may be or become ensconced in space and artifacts can broaden the scope of sociomaterial research (de Vaujany and Mitev, 2013). It can connect the entanglement of the social and the material not only to practices, but also to more symbolic, yet significant, dimensions of organizational dynamics, such as, in particular, efforts to legitimate the organization to its stakeholders. This paper therefore argues for a cross-fertilization of sociomaterial and institutional research and does so by examining how the material space(s) that an organization occupies is invoked in organizational legitimization exercises. More specifically, this research investigates the relationships between organizational space and legitimacy in a context where they are most vividly at stake: university campus tours, i.e. the guided discovery of a specific space, aiming at giving an audience an overview of its past, present and future and at establishing the legitimacy of the organization being visited. The importance of tours of physical spaces to ‘impress’ visitors has long been established (Kuh, 1990; Braxton and Clendon, 2001; Atkinson & Hammersley, 1994). For long, showing a place, emphasizing its history, its beauty, its technical or aesthetic performance, has been a way to legitimate an organization and its leaders. Recently, it has taken on a special criticality for many organizations, though, given the multiplicity of stakeholders they face and the diversity of institutional logics that may govern them. In this paper, we argue that during campus tours organizational members attempt to align their presentation of the campus and its physical setting with what they expect can legitimize their organization in the eyes of external stakeholders. To collect rich and contextual data we used a participant-observation method of several tours. We also relied on secondary data (universities’ websites, maps, leaflets, etc). Our sample was based on multiple observations, e.g. at McGill University, La Sorbonne University, Stanford University and Berkeley University. Through our participant-observation of campus tours, the identification of the spaces and artifacts encountered, and the analysis of the story telling produced by our guide, our aim was to understand simultaneously the narrative of the tour and its material inscription. The cross-fertilization between the literature on institutional logics and that on sociomateriality applied to a case of campus tours allowed us to contribute to the literature in three important ways. First, we allude to the role that materiality plays for actors to demonstrate adherence to particular logics. Our research sheds light on how narratives aimed at producing organizational legitimacy and artifacts are interwoven. The narratives made the institutional logics on which the organization drew (e.g. logic of history, logic of social responsibility, logic of functionality, logic of innovation, logic of the market) visible both through the use of language and by invoking a variety of artifacts and spaces to emphasize and visualize these logics to the audience in attempts to make the organization appear trustworthy, aligned with stakeholders’ interests and ultimately legitimate. Second, in response to recent calls for a deepened inclusion of materiality in the institutional literature (Friedland, 2012; Jones et al 2013), we show how organizations develop sociomaterial practices to manage potential tensions between institutional logics. For example, in the case of Stanford university, showing the church and framing it as a non-religious place and instead emphasizing its ethical messages clearly illustrated the tensions between a religious logic which the university rejected, and the desire to frame themselves along the logic of social responsibility. Third, we show the importance of employing adequate methodological devices and procedures that enable researchers to visualize institutions and theorize around their materiality. In this particular paper, observing campus tours and being attentive to the artifacts and spaces involved, and document in written as well as photographic forms gave visibility to the institutional logics at stake for the organization in question.

Living on the edge critiques oppressive aspects of urban living. It advocates façade occupation to enhance the experience of density and enrich the street edge to achieve a vibrant and metropolitan New Zealand. Sited in Te Aro, Wellington Central, the project proposes a citywide inversion of the typical high-rise building layout, relocating primary circulation to the street edge to dramatically reform the spatial relationships between dwelling, building and street. The project is an inhabitable facade system comprised of various combinations of the colannade, the gallery and the annexe. This can be applied to existing or integrated with new buildings and varied in response to specific street conditions. By creating multifunctional outdoor living integrated with circulation spaces, the design offers a vision for vertical communities with enhanced dwelling amenity to encourage more New Zealanders to embrace high density living.

Materiality and Space focuses on how organizations and managing are bound with the material forms and spaces through which humans act and interact at work. It concentrates on organizational practices and pulls together three separate domains that are rarely looked at together: sociomateriality, sociology of space, and social studies of technology. The contributions draw on and combine several of these domains, and propose analyses of spaces and materiality in a range of organizational practices such as collaborative workspaces, media work, urban management, e-learning environments, managerial control, mobile lives, institutional routines and professional identity. Theoretical insights are also developed by Pickering on the material world, Lyytinen on affordance, Lorino on architexture and Introna on sociomaterial assemblages in order to delve further into conceptualizing materiality in organizations.

Comment rendre visible l'invisible des maisons intimes et mentales ? De quelle manière aborder, dans un travail plastique, les riches dialectiques et les vastes thématiques contenues dans la notion de maison ? C'est ce que je vais explorer tout au long de cette recherche qui met en relation mes créations avec des œuvres d'artistes de référence. Je questionne la notion de maison comme premier abri psychologique, philosophique et ontologique. Nos maisons intimes peuvent être métaphoriquement bâties dans notre esprit sous les formes - toit, murs, porte - de l'architecture archétypale. Les notions de forme, d'échelle ainsi que la symbolique des procédés et des matériaux, essentielles dans ma démarche seront aussi présentes et analysées ici. Je traiterai de la construction de ces lieux personnels par l'imaginaire. Mes pièces y seront analysées comme des architectures éphémères, construites avec des matériaux et gestes créateurs symboliques. Ma réflexion questionne l'espace intangible où la maison rencontre son potentiel immatériel.

Das Verständnis von Arbeitsräumen in Kunst, Wissenschaft und Wirtschaft hat in den letzten Jahrzehnten, insbesondere in den letzten zehn Jahren, eine grundlegende Wandlung erfahren. Dies ist vor allem auf die großen Fortschritte und Weiterentwicklungen im Bereich der Neuen Technologien zurückzuführen. Seit den neunziger Jahren ist der Arbeitsplatz nicht mehr unbedingt ein 'physischer Raum', sondern entwickelt sich mehr und mehr zu einem virtuellen Raum, in dem sich die Grenzen zwischen Kunst, Wissenschaft und Wirtschaft scheinbar auflösen.Der Band widmet sich der Fragestellung, wie Künstler, Manager und Wissenschaftler heutzutage ihre Arbeitsbereiche denken und gestalten. Nach welchen Kriterien gehen sie dabei vor? Wie beeinflussen die jeweilige Zielsetzung und Arbeitsmethode das Arbeitsumfeld beziehungsweise welchen Einfluss übt der Raum auf die Arbeitspraxis aus?
