The mortality of Atlantic salmon is one of the main challenges to achieving its sustainable production. This sector benefits from generating many data, some of which are collated in a standardized way, on a monthly basis at site level, and are accessible to the public. This continuously updated resource might provide opportunities to monitor mortality and prompt producers and inspectors to further investigate when mortality is higher than expected. This study aimed to use the available open-source data to develop production cycle level dynamic linear models (DLMs) for monitoring monthly mortality of maricultured Atlantic salmon in Scotland. To achieve this, several production cycle level DLMs were created: one univariate DLM that includes just mortality; and various multivariate DLMs that include mortality and different combinations of environmental variables. While environmental information is not collated in a standardized way across all sites, open-source remote-sensed satellite resources provide continuous, standardized estimates. By combining environmental and mortality data, we seek to investigate whether adding environmental variables enhanced the estimates of mortality, and if so, which variables were most informative in this respect. The multivariate model performed better than the univariate DLM (P = .004), with salinity as the only significant contributor out of 12 environmental variables. Both models exhibited uncertainty related to the mortality estimates. Warnings were generated when any observation fell above the 95% credible interval. Approximately 30% of production cycles and more than 50% of sites experienced at least one warning between 2015 and 2020. Occurrences of these warnings were non-uniformly distributed across space and time, with the majority happening in the summer and autumn months. Recommendations for model improvement include employing shorter time periods for data aggregation, such as weekly instead of on a monthly basis. Textbook datasets seldom match the complexities and messiness of real-world data and finding these datasets can be challenging for educators. Consulting and industrial datasets often have nondisclosure agreements. Academic datasets often require subject area expertise beyond those of a general education or lack connections to real-world applications. Many governments, including the United States, now require the release of data from projects they directly complete or fund though grants and contracts. We show how statistical educators may find datasets and incorporate them into courses. Specifically, we use two examples from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and one example from the ecology literature. We demonstrate the use of these datasets in an upper-level analysis of variance (ANOVA) class. In addition to describing how we found the datasets, we describe how to include them into course work and the course’s student assessments. We have used these datasets over multiple semesters and included student feedback from these courses. Although our examples focus on an ANOVA class, the general methods for finding data shared here could be used for statistical classes ranging from high school to graduate education. Kriging is the most widely used spatial interpolation method in geostatistics. For many environmental applications, kriging may have to satisfy the stationarity and isotropy hypothesis, and new techniques using machine learning suffer from a lack of labeled data. In this paper, we propose the use of deep image prior, which is a U-net-like deep neural network designed for image reconstruction, to perform spatial interpolation and conditional map generation without any prior learning. This approach allows us to overcome the assumptions for kriging as well as the lack of labeled data when proposing uncertainty and probability above a certain threshold. The proposed method is based on a convolutional neural network that generates a map from random values by minimizing the difference between the output map and the observed values. With this new method of spatial interpolation, we generate n maps to obtain a map of uncertainty and a map of probability of exceeding the threshold. Experiments demonstrate the relevance of the proposed methods for spatial interpolation on both the well-known digital elevation model data and the more challenging case of pollution mapping. With the increasing demand for road traffic safety assessment, global concerns about road safety have been rising. This is particularly evident with the widespread adoption of V2X (Vehicle-to-Everything) technology, where people are more intensively focused on how to leverage advanced technological means to effectively address challenges in traffic safety. Through the research of driving style recognition technology, accurate assessment of driving behavior and the provision of personalized safety prompts and warnings have become crucial for preventing traffic accidents. This paper proposes a risk field construction technique based on environmental data collected by in-vehicle sensors. This paper introduces a driving style recognition algorithm utilizing risk field visualization and mask learning technologies. The research results indicate that, compared to traditional classical models, the improved algorithm performs excellently in terms of accuracy, stability, and robustness, enhancing the accuracy of driving style recognition and enabling a more effective evaluation of road safety. Skewness and bimodality properties are frequently observed when analyzing environmental data such as wind speeds, precipitation levels, and ambient temperatures. As an alternative to modeling data exhibiting these properties, we propose a flexible extension of the skew-logistic distribution. The proposal corresponds to a weighted version of the skewed logistic distribution, defined by a parametric weight function that allows shapes with up to three modes for the resulting density. Parameter estimation via the maximum likelihood approach is discussed. Simulation experiments are carried out to evaluate the performance of the estimators. This article uses a combination of archaeological, environmental and historical evidence to consider where the most plausible shipping routes and landing points were around the west part of the Aegean island of Samos during the period 700–500 BCE, a time known for significant maritime activity in the region. Emerging evidence suggests that the west part of Samos, although subject year-round to strong and dangerous winds and lacking in safe anchorages along its coastline, connected itself in antiquity to a range of regional and supra-regional maritime networks. This article provides an important discussion for considering the practicalities of how those networks operated. Taking into account the size and capacity of ships sailing the Aegean in the seventh and sixth centuries BCE, this article considers how small ships would have fared in this region, in light of annual wind forecast, coastal topography and offshore bathymetry. Although there is a dearth of primary historical evidence from this period, comparative written accounts from the early modern period provide an opportunity for reflecting on how this area of the Aegean could have been navigated in small craft. Abstract This article argues that in order to get to grips with emergent forms of environmental governance and politics, the de-spatialised and un-situated claims of open data initiatives need to be interrogated. Drawing on ethnographic work with an international scientific project in the Brazilian Amazon, the article explores the everyday collection of environmental data in the field as a way of making space, through simultaneous processes of re-territorialisation and de-territorialisation. It brings to light the ongoing labour and complex layering and folding of these territorial formations, as well as their capacity to foster ambivalently differentiated social and affective worlds. These worlds emerge from technologies of territorialisation but are not subsumed by them. The article then turns to a contrasting case, that of the apparently virtual data infrastructures and portals of open data initiatives, asking what forms of territorialisation they might constitute. The paper ends with the tentative suggestion that ‘openness’ is not a spatial form that the world is assumed to take, but is the apparatus itself of extension, the social and political machinery of de- and re-territorialisation.

We present an approach that uses a deep learning model, in particular, a MultiLayer Perceptron, for estimating the missing values of a variable in multivariate time series data. We focus on filling a long continuous gap (e.g., multiple months of missing daily observations) rather than on individual randomly missing observations. Our proposed gap filling algorithm uses an automated method for determining the optimal MLP model architecture, thus allowing for optimal prediction performance for the given time series. We tested our approach by filling gaps of various lengths (three months to three years) in three environmental datasets with different time series characteristics, namely daily groundwater levels, daily soil moisture, and hourly Net Ecosystem Exchange. We compared the accuracy of the gap-filled values obtained with our approach to the widely used R-based time series gap filling methods ImputeTS and mtsdi. The results indicate that using an MLP for filling a large gap leads to better results, especially when the data behave nonlinearly. Thus, our approach enables the use of datasets that have a large gap in one variable, which is common in many long-term environmental monitoring observations.

In geosciences, kriging is leading spatial interpolation, and co-kriging is the most commonly used method for accomplishing spatial interpolation of a target variable by incorporating information from a secondary variable. Co-kriging relies on the assumption of spatial stationarity, which may not hold true in all geospatial contexts, leading to potential inaccuracies in interpolation. The effectiveness of co-kriging can be compromised in areas with sparse data, impacting the reliability of interpolated results. Moreover, it can be resource-intensive when used for interpolation with a substantial volume of data, especially in the case of 3D interpolation. In this paper, we introduce a new method for spatial interpolation that considers two variables using a generative deep neural network. This approach utilizes a convolutional neural network with an encoder–decoder architecture, featuring a single encoder and two decoders to handle the two variables. Additionally, we introduce a loss function that facilitates the control over the relationships between the two variables. Traditional Deep Learning methods require prior training and labeled data, whereas the proposed approach eliminates this requirement and simplifies the interpolation process. In order to assess the performance of our method, we use two real-world datasets. The first one is a 2D dataset of total soil organic carbon combined with the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index. The second one is a 3D dataset that combines concentrations of Hydrocarbon and Fluoride obtained from hyperspectral analysis of soil cores with very limited number of boreholes. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms ordinary kriging and co-kriging, showing a significant improvement when both variables are used. We also demonstrate how the inclusion of the auxiliary variable serves as a means to mitigate the overfitting of the model.

In this study, a fuzzy model has been proposed for the control of the degradation process in Cultural Heritage. Specifically, the focus has been on the Nuragic building, Genna Maria, in Villanovaforru, Sardinia. Environmental data and material properties were considered to formalize inferences between different variables of the model. The results highlight the possibility of significant decay processes, such as salt crystallization and freeze-thaw cycles, estimated for all months of the year. A comparison between model elaborations and experimental data (material characterization, environmental data, accelerated ageing) demonstrates the reliability of the proposed procedure.

Motivation: Impacts of climate change on marine biodiversity are often projected with species distribution modelling using standardized data layers representing physical, chemical and biological conditions of the global ocean. Yet, the available data layers (1) have not been updated to incorporate data of the Sixth Phase of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6), which comprise the Shared Socioeconomic Pathway (SSP) scenarios; (2) consider a limited number of Earth System Models (ESMs), and (3) miss important variables expected to influence future biodiversity distributions. These limitations might undermine biodiversity impact assessments, by failing to integrate them within the context of the most up‐to‐date climate change projections, raising the uncertainty in estimates and misinterpreting the exposure of biodiversity to extreme conditions. Here, we provide a significant update of Bio‐ORACLE, extending biologically relevant data layers from present‐day conditions to the end of the 21st century Shared Socioeconomic Pathway scenarios based on a multi‐model ensemble with data from CMIP6. Alongside, we provide R and Python packages for seamless integration in modelling workflows. The data layers aim to enhance the understanding of the potential impacts of climate change on biodiversity and to support well‐informed research, conservation and management. The proliferation of environmentally oriented programs within the tech industry, and the industry's coinciding efforts toward data and technology democratization, generate concerns about the status of environmental data within digital economy. While the accumulation of digital personal data has been a cornerstone of domination of the data analytics industry, many believe environmental data to be a source of "untapped potential." The potential of environmental data, the argument goes, would benefit equally the digital economy, environmental sciences, and academic data and artificial intelligence experts. This article analyzes the proliferation of the rhetoric about open environmental data by focusing on Microsoft's Planetary Computer cloud computing program and computer vision experts who curate and use biodiversity data stored on Microsoft's servers. Through an analytical framework of sociotechnical imaginaries, the article draws connections between visions of future for environmental knowledge production and governance promoted by Microsoft and the work of computer vision experts intending to benefit from the potential of environmental data as machine learning training sets while at the same time helping environmental sciences. Although environmental data on the Planetary Computer is democratized, it nonetheless becomes a valued asset to data economy, but often with unintended consequences, such as enabling citizen science biodiversity data to be used by state surveillance apparatus. The article challenges the view that data's democratization is unproblematically serving environmental sciences by examining the consequences of imaginaries of democratization emerging from the data industry leaders and processes of nonmonetary valuation of environmental data by experts who curate these datasets. Ship trajectory prediction is essential for ensuring safe route planning and to have advanced warning of the dangers at sea. With the development of deep learning, most of the current research has explored advanced prediction methods based on historical spatio-temporal Automatic Identification System (AIS) data. However, environmental factors such as sea wind and visibility also affect ship navigation in real-world maritime shipping. Therefore, developing reliable models utilizing multimodal data, such as AIS and environmental data, is challenging. In this research, we design an adaptive multimodal vessel trajectory data prediction model (termed AMD) based on satellite AIS and environmental data. The AMD model mainly consists of an AIS-based extraction network, an environmental-based extraction network, and a fusion block. In particular, this work considers multimodal data such as historical spatio-temporal information and environmental factors. Time stamps and distances are correlated with AIS and environmental data, and a multilayer perceptron and gated recurrent unit networks are used to design multimodal feature extraction networks. Finally, the fusion block realizes the fusion output of multimodal features to improve the reliability of the AMD model. Several quantitative and qualitative experiments are conducted using real-world AIS and multimodal environmental datasets. Numerous experimental results prove that prediction performance using multimodal data can ensure satisfactory accuracy and reliability while exhibiting a positive impact on improving maritime transport services. A space-borne remote sensing method was applied, validated, and demonstrated in a case study on the Samuel de Champlain Bridge in Montreal, Canada. High-resolution C-band radar satellite imagery was analyzed using the Persistent Scatterer Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar technique to derive bridge displacements and compare them against theoretical estimates. Multispectral and long-wave thermal infrared satellite imagery acquired during the InSAR observation period and historical environmental data were analyzed to provide context for the interpretation and understanding of InSAR results. Thermal deformation measurements compared well with their theoretical estimates based on known bridge geometry and ambient temperature data. Non-thermal deformation measurements gave no evidence of settlement during the 2-year monitoring period, as would normally be expected for a newly constructed bridge with its foundation on bedrock. The availability of environmental data obtained from multispectral and thermal infrared satellite imagery was found to be useful in providing context for the bridge stability assessment. Ambient temperature measurements from thermal infrared satellite imagery were found to be a suitable alternative in cases where data from in situ temperature sensors or nearby weather stations are not available or not fit for purpose. No strong correlation was found between the river conditions and bridge deformation results from the InSAR analysis; this is partly due to the fact that most of these effects act along the river flow in the north–south direction, to which the satellite sensor is not sensitive. This systematic literature review (SLR) provides a comprehensive overview of remote sensing (RS) applications in northern peatlands from 2017 to 2022, utilising various platforms, including in situ, UAV, airborne, and satellite technologies. It addresses the challenges and limitations presented by the sophisticated nature of northern peatland ecosystems. This SLR reveals an in-creased focus on mapping, monitoring, and hydrology but identifies noticeable gaps in peatland degradation research. Despite the benefits of remote sensing, such as extensive spatial coverage and consistent monitoring, challenges persist, including high costs, underexplored areas, and limitations in hyperspectral data application. Fusing remote sensing data with on-site research offers new insights for regional peatland studies. However, challenges arise from issues like the cost of high-resolution data, coverage limitations, and inadequate field validation data in remote areas. Abstract Crop pests reduce productivity, so managing them through early detection and prevention is essential. Data from various modalities are being used to predict crop diseases by applying machine learning methodology. In particular, because growth environment data is relatively easy to obtain, many attempts are made to predict pests and diseases using it. In this paper, we propose a model that predicts diseases through previous growth environment information of crops, including air temperature, relative humidity, dew point, and CO2 concentration, using deep learning techniques. Using large-scale public data on crops of strawberry, pepper, grape, tomato, and paprika, we showed the model can predict the risk score of crop pests and diseases. It showed high predictive performance with an average AUROC of 0.917, and based on the predicted results, it can help prevent pests or post-processing. This environmental data-based crop disease prediction model and learning framework are expected to be universally applicable to various facilities and crops for disease/pest prevention.

The production relationship represented by intelligent technology is driven by data and algorithms, characterized by the coexistence of singularity and diversity, and involves the interaction between the virtual and real worlds. Intelligent technology reshapes environmental governance from two perspectives: technological governance and social governance. This reshaping process can be summarized by using three groups of keywords: ' data and algorithms,' ' singularity and diversity,' and ' virtuality and reality.' Intelligent environmental governance can be categorized into three types: perceptual, service-oriented, and interconnected. However, each type presents inherent paradoxes. In perceptual intelligent environmental governance, the ownership of environmental data is exclusive, while conducting environmental data behavior is relatively easy. In service-oriented intelligent environmental governance, there is a contradiction between the development of platforms, the provision of governance services, and the formation of governance decisions in terms of singularity and diversity. In interconnected intelligent environmental governance, there is a conflict between the freedom of cyberspace and the limitations of traditional public spaces dominated by government power in terms of interaction. Resolving these three sets of paradoxes is crucial for the healthy development of intelligent environmental governance. In perceptual intelligent environmental governance, it is essential to clarify the subject of environmental data behavior, limit the purpose of such behavior, and establish the consequences, ultimately constraining environmental data behavior. In service-oriented intelligent environmental governance, it is necessary to establish objective standards to balance singularity and diversity. These standards include orderly platform development, addressing weaknesses in environmental governance services, and setting bottom-line standards for environmental decision-making. Resolving the paradoxes of interconnected intelligent environmental governance requires the government to adapt its role within the public sphere of an intelligent society. At the support level, the government needs to change its investment model in non-governmental environmental governance entities. At the guidance level, the government should improve its guidance mechanisms for these non-governmental entities. This study examines outlier detection in time-series sensor data from PurpleAir low-cost sensors in Athens, Greece. Focusing on key environmental parameters such as temperature, humidity, and particulate matter (PM) levels, the study utilizes the Interquartile Range (IQR) and Generalized Extreme Studentized Deviate (GESD) methods on hourly and daily basis. GESD detected more outliers than IQR, most of them in PM, while temperature and humidity data had fewer outliers; applying filters before outlier detection and adjusting alpha values based on time scales were crucial, and outliers significantly affected spatial interpolation, emphasizing the need for spatial statistics in smart city air quality management. Summary: Cloud‐based services have proved useful in several research fields, such as engineering, health science, and astrophysics, to mention a few examples. The computational environmental science community developed a strong need for cloud facilities to store, process, and manage data from observations and numerical models for simulations and forecasts. Weather forecast models and global sensor networks deal with multidimensional geo‐referenced data∖sets. However, environmental data consumer applications usually require a relatively small amount of multidimensional input data slice to analyze a specific area or time interval. Hence, reducing data dimension for information retrieval is mandatory. This paper presents a twofold solution: a technique to load and retrieve the sliced multidimensional data set on different cloud services such as Amazon Web Service (AWS), Google Cloud Platform, and Microsoft Azure. The experimental results performed on these cloud services highlight that the proposed method can significantly speed up the process of loading and retrieving the data slices compared to working with the entire data set in bulk or OPeNDAP server. Diverse observational and simulation datasets are needed to understand and predict complex ecosystem behavior over seasonal to decadal and century time-scales. Integration of these datasets poses a major barrier towards advancing environmental science, particularly due to differences in the structure and formats of data provided by various sources. Here, we describe BASIN-3D (Broker for Assimilation, Synthesis and Integration of eNvironmental Diverse, Distributed Datasets), a data integration framework designed to dynamically retrieve and transform heterogeneous data from different sources into a common format to provide an integrated view. BASIN-3D enables users to adopt a standardized approach for data retrieval and avoid customizations for the data type or source. We demonstrate the value of BASIN-3D with two use cases that require integration of data from regional to watershed spatial scales. The first application uses the BASIN-3D Python library to integrate time-series hydrological and meteorological data to provide standardized inputs to analytical and machine learning codes in order to predict the impacts of hydrological disturbances on large river corridors of the United States. The second application uses the BASIN-3D Django framework to integrate diverse time-series data in a mountainous watershed in East River, Colorado, United States to enable scientific researchers to explore and download data through an interactive web portal. Thus, BASIN-3D can be used to support data integration for both web-based tools, as well as data analytics using Python scripting and extensions like Jupyter notebooks. The framework is expected to be transferable to and useful for many other field and modeling studies.

In this paper, we improve the performance of machine translation emotion recognition by fusing word features and linguistic features of environmentally friendly text with LSTM neural networks. Multi-channel LSTM’s unbalanced emotion classification method can address the problem of unbalanced numbers of samples in each emotion category in the emotion classification task. The bilingual semantic similarity degree feature is added to the translation process of English environmental protection data so as to make the translation of English environmental protection data more accurate. The proposed method is validated through experiments, and the results show that the translation quality of the LSTM model is generally higher than that of other models, and the mean value of the translation quality of the LSTM on the test17 dataset is 50.4. In terms of environmental protection terminology, mistranslations, common word mistranslations, etc. There is a significant reduction of 2–3 times in the absolute number of the LSTM model compared to the traditional method. A total of 94,788 corpora were obtained from 10 environmental translations, such as Silent Spring and Solace of the Heart, and 2,311 favorite emotion words were identified. Comparative analysis of the samples reveals that most of the translation results of some environmental terms are in the range of 0.7–0.9, and the range of semantic overlay between the machine translation results of the LSTM model and the standard translations is large. Most users believe the model improves the translator’s translation level and diction accuracy.

Abstract The four-parameter Kappa distribution (4KD) is known to be flexible and has been used for extreme value analysis, especially in hydrological sciences. This distribution has the great advantage of encompassing the two main distributions of extreme values used in the literature: the Generalized Pareto Distribution (GPD) and the Generalized Extreme Value (GEV) distribution. However, the analyses made in previous works for 4KD in the context of extreme values are based only on models with static parameters, not allowing the capture of covariate effects such as seasonality and location variables in a specific dataset. This study proposes that the inference about the 4KD can be made under the Bayesian paradigm by inserting a regression structure on the parameters to assess possible effects of covariates under the model. This proposal allows us to interpret the parameters and predict extreme events when there are covariates. The estimation of the parameters is performed using Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) procedures. The model was applied with both approaches in extremes: maximum and exceedance data. In this analysis, the proposed model was compared with models that use a regression structure in the usual extreme values distribution (GEV and GPD), and it presented better results in fit measures. The Kumaraswamy distribution is widely used for modeling rates and proportions, such as relative humidity. Motivated by one environmental application, where the variable of interest is observed on the unit-interval and inflated at one, we propose Shewhart-type control charts based on the inflated Kumaraswamy distribution. In particular, we propose a control chart for monitoring the inflated Kumaraswamy median parameter. For highly asymmetric distributions or in the presence of outliers, the median is a more appropriate location parameter than the average. We proposed control charts considering two approaches: individual observations and non-individual observations. For the non-individual observations, three estimators were considered for the median parameter: sample median, maximum likelihood estimator, and the estimator proposed by Hodges and Lehmann (Ann Math Stat 34:598–611, 1963). The control chart performance is evaluated in terms of run length analysis. The numerical results show that the proposed control chart performed well in the two considered approaches. Predicting the amount of natural ventilation by utilizing environmental data such as differential pressure, wind, temperature, and humidity with IoT sensing is an important issue for optimal HVAC control to maintain comfortable air quality. Recently, some research has been conducted using deep learning to provide high accuracy in natural ventilation prediction. Therefore, high reliability of IoT sensing data is required to achieve predictions successfully. However, it is practically difficult to predict the accurate NVR in a mismeasurement sensing environment, since inaccurate IoT sensing data are collected, for example, due to sensor malfunction. Therefore, we need a way to provide high deep-learning-based NVR prediction accuracy in mismeasurement sensing environments. In this study, to overcome the degradation of accuracy due to mismeasurement, we use complementary auxiliary data generated by semi-supervised learning and selected by importance analysis. That is, the NVR prediction model is reliably trained by generating and selecting auxiliary data, and then the natural ventilation is predicted with the integration of mismeasurement and auxiliary by bagging-based ensemble approach. Based on the experimental results, we confirmed that the proposed method improved the natural ventilation rate prediction accuracy by 25% compared with the baseline approach. In the context of deep-learning-based natural ventilation prediction using various IoT sensing data, we address the issue of realistic mismeasurement by generating auxiliary data that utilize the rapidly changing or slowly changing characteristics of the sensing data, which can improve the reliability of observation data. Skewness and bimodality properties are frequently observed when analyzing environmental data such as wind speeds, precipitation levels, and ambient temperatures. As an alternative to modeling data exhibiting these properties, we propose a flexible extension of the skew-logistic distribution. The proposal corresponds to a weighted version of the skewed logistic distribution, defined by a parametric weight function that allows shapes with up to three modes for the resulting density. Parameter estimation via the maximum likelihood approach is discussed. Simulation experiments are carried out to evaluate the performance of the estimators. Applications to environmental data illustrating the utility of the proposal are presented.

With the increasing demand for road traffic safety assessment, global concerns about road safety have been rising. This is particularly evident with the widespread adoption of V2X (Vehicle-to-Everything) technology, where people are more intensively focused on how to leverage advanced technological means to effectively address challenges in traffic safety. Through the research of driving style recognition technology, accurate assessment of driving behavior and the provision of personalized safety prompts and warnings have become crucial for preventing traffic accidents. This paper proposes a risk field construction technique based on environmental data collected by in-vehicle sensors. This paper introduces a driving style recognition algorithm utilizing risk field visualization and mask learning technologies. The research results indicate that, compared to traditional classical models, the improved algorithm performs excellently in terms of accuracy, stability, and robustness, enhancing the accuracy of driving style recognition and enabling a more effective evaluation of road safety.

Ship trajectory prediction is essential for ensuring safe route planning and to have advanced warning of the dangers at sea. With the development of deep learning, most of the current research has explored advanced prediction methods based on historical spatio-temporal Automatic Identification System (AIS) data. However, environmental factors such as sea wind and visibility also affect ship navigation in real-world maritime shipping. Therefore, developing reliable models utilizing multimodal data, such as AIS and environmental data, is challenging. In this research, we design an adaptive multimodal vessel trajectory data prediction model (termed AMD) based on satellite AIS and environmental data. The AMD model mainly consists of an AIS-based extraction network, an environmental-based extraction network, and a fusion block. In particular, this work considers multimodal data such as historical spatio-temporal information and environmental factors. Time stamps and distances are correlated with AIS and environmental data, and a multilayer perceptron and gated recurrent unit networks are used to design multimodal feature extraction networks. Finally, the fusion block realizes the fusion output of multimodal features to improve the reliability of the AMD model. Several quantitative and qualitative experiments are conducted using real-world AIS and multimodal environmental datasets. Numerous experimental results prove that prediction performance using multimodal data can ensure satisfactory accuracy and reliability while exhibiting a positive impact on improving maritime transport services.

A space-borne remote sensing method was applied, validated, and demonstrated in a case study on the Samuel de Champlain Bridge in Montreal, Canada. High-resolution C-band radar satellite imagery was analyzed using the Persistent Scatterer Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar technique to derive bridge displacements and compare them against theoretical estimates. Multispectral and long-wave thermal infrared satellite imagery acquired during the InSAR observation period and historical environmental data were analyzed to provide context for the interpretation and understanding of InSAR results. Thermal deformation measurements compared well with their theoretical estimates based on known bridge geometry and ambient temperature data. Non-thermal deformation measurements gave no evidence of settlement during the 2-year monitoring period, as would normally be expected for a newly constructed bridge with its foundation on bedrock. The availability of environmental data obtained from multispectral and thermal infrared satellite imagery was found to be useful in providing context for the bridge stability assessment. Ambient temperature measurements from thermal infrared satellite imagery were found to be a suitable alternative in cases where data from in situ temperature sensors or nearby weather stations are not available or not fit for purpose. No strong correlation was found between the river conditions and bridge deformation results from the InSAR analysis; this is partly due to the fact that most of these effects act along the river flow in the north–south direction, to which the satellite sensor is not sensitive.

Coastal areas have long been attractive places to live, work, and recreate and remain so even in the face of growing threats from global environmental change. At any moment, a significant portion of the human population is exposed to both positive and negative health effects associated with coastal locations. Some locations may be “hotspots” of concern for human health due to ongoing climatic and other changes, accentuating the need for better understanding of coastal environment-human health linkages. This paper describes how environmental and health data could be combined to create a coastal environmental and human health observing system. While largely based on information from the US and Europe, the concept should be relevant to almost any coastal area. If implemented, a coastal health observing system would connect a variety of human health data and environmental observations for individuals and communities, and where possible cohorts. Health data would be derived from questionnaires and other personal sources, clinical examinations, electronic health records, wearable devices, and syndromic surveillance, plus information on vulnerability and health-relevant community characteristics, and social media observations. Environmental data sources would include weather and climate, beach and coastal conditions, sentinel species, occurrences of harmful organisms and substances, seafood safety advisories, and distribution, proximity, and characteristics of health-promoting green and blue spaces. Where available, information on supporting resources could be added. Establishment of a linked network of coastal health observatories could provide powerful tools for understanding the positive and negative health effects of coastal living, lead to better health protections and enhanced wellbeing, and provide significant benefits to coastal residents, including the historically disadvantaged, as well as the military, hospitals and emergency departments, academic medical, public health, and environmental health programs, and others. Early networks could provide best practices and lessons learned to assist later entries.

This article presents the new theoretical concept of environing media, which is developed to offer critical insight into how processes of mediation affect how we perceive of, manage and use the environment. Building on the insight that the environment has been in a continuous slow process of change that is now escalating due to human impacts, the article sketches a history of how environmental change and mediation are intertwined. Taking the history of agriculture as a case for the theoretical development, it shows how the current digitization of farming and implementation of AI systems in precision agriculture is the last of a long series in which environmental mediation come to play a crucial role in the forging of human–Earth relations. The article thereby shows the complex interplay between knowing and changing the environment as media technologies produce new epistemologies that in turn produce new interventions. In extreme values theory, for a sufficiently large block size, the maxima distribution is approximated by the generalized extreme value (GEV) distribution. The GEV distribution is a family of continuous probability distributions, which has wide applicability in several areas, including hydrology, engineering, science, ecology, and finance. However, the GEV distribution is not suitable for modeling extreme bimodal data. In this paper, we propose an extension of the GEV distribution that incorporates an additional parameter. The additional parameter introduces bimodality and aries tail weight, i.e., this proposed extension is more flexible than the GEV distribution. Inference for the proposed distribution was performed under the likelihood paradigm. A Monte Carlo experiment is conducted to evaluate the performances of these estimators in finite samples with a discussion of the results. Finally, the proposed distribution is applied to environmental data sets, illustrating their capabilities in challenging cases in extreme value theory. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Building automation and the advancement of sustainability and safety in internal spaces benefit significantly from occupancy sensing. While particular traditional Machine Learning (ML) methods have succeeded at identifying occupancy patterns for specific datasets, achieving substantial performance in other datasets is still challenging. This paper proposes an occupancy detection method using non-intrusive ambient data and a Deep Learning (DL) model. An environmental sensing board was used to gather temperature, humidity, pressure, light level, motion, sound, and Carbon Dioxide (CO 2 ) data. The detection approach was deployed on an edge device to enable low-cost computing while increasing data security. The system was set up at a university office, which functioned as the primary case study testing location. We analyzed two Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) models to confirm the optimum alternative for edge deployment. A 2D-CNN technique was used for one day to identify occupancy in real-time.
