Natural conversion of ferrihydrite (Fh), a widespread Fe(iii)-oxyhydroxide mineral at the Earth's surface, to thermodynamically more stable iron oxides such as goethite (Gt) and hematite (Hm) is a slow process that spans months to years. Here we examined the effects of synthesis and storage conditions on the hydration, the ratio of tetrahedral to octahedral iron sites, and the transformation of naturally aged 2-line Fh at room temperature and mildly acidic pH over an ageing period of 5 years. Fh samples synthesized and aged in either aerobic or anaerobic conditions were characterized over time by XRD, SEM, thermogravimetric analysis - mass spectroscopy (TGA-MS), and X-ray absorption spectroscopies (XANES and XMCD). The findings show that the ratio of tetrahedral to octahedral Fe(iii) sites in Fh is correlated to its extent of hydration, with fresher Fh samples exhibiting a higher ratio and more bound water. Fresh Fh aged in aerobic conditions has similar bound inorganic carbon, is more hydrated, and has less tetrahedral Fe(iii) than that aged in anaerobic conditions. Hence, for relatively fresh Fh there is a link between Fh properties and storage conditions. However, the long-term ageing characteristics, such as the transformation rate and relative phase fraction of Gt and Hm products, are not noticeably impacted by storage conditions. TGA-MS measurements coupled with O K-edge XANES spectra confirm that Fh tends to lose its hydration as it ages, as expected. Corresponding Fe L2,3-edge XMCD spectra reveal that this dehydration is coupled to a steady decrease in the ratio of tetrahedral to octahedral Fe(iii) sites. In addition to the obvious constraints these findings place on making comparisons across Fh samples of different age and environmental settings, they also highlight that Fh structure, and consequently magnetism, are linked to its bound water content.

The presence of toxic metals in tobacco smoke is well documented. However, few studies have quantified trace metals in secondhand smoke (SHS) and thirdhand smoke (THS). Their presence in indoor air can contribute to nonsmokers’ exposures and health effects. In this study, emission and deposition rates of toxic trace metals were determined, and their airborne concentration in typical indoor scenarios was predicted. PM2.5 was collected on Teflon-coated filters at various times following a smoking event in a room-sized chamber over a 43 h period. The concentration of 28 trace metals was determined by extraction and analysis using inductively coupled plasma-triple quadrupole-mass spectrometry (ICP-QQQ-MS). Emission and indoor deposition rates of cadmium, arsenic, chromium, manganese, beryllium and selenium were determined, and used to predict concentrations expected in a smokers’ home and a smoking bar. In most of the considered scenarios, average indoor concentrations of Cd, As, and Cr exceeded their corresponding cancer risk thresholds and, in some cases, also noncancer reference exposure levels, more than 3 h after smoking ended. The fraction of cadmium that remained airborne was significantly higher than those of other metal traces and that of PM2.5, suggesting an association of Cd traces with small particles.

Historical policies have been shown to underpin environmental quality. In the 1930s, the federal Home Owners' Loan Corporation (HOLC) developed the most comprehensive archive of neighborhoods that would have been redlined by local lenders and the Federal Housing Administration, often applying racist criteria. Our study explored how redlining is associated with environmental quality across eight California cities. We integrated HOLC's graded maps [grades A (i.e., "best" and "greenlined"), B, C, and D (i.e., "hazardous" and "redlined")] with 10 environmental hazards using data from 2018 to 2021 to quantify the spatial overlap among redlined neighborhoods and environmental hazards. We found that formerly redlined neighborhoods have poorer environmental quality relative to those of other HOLC grades via higher pollution, more noise, less vegetation, and elevated temperatures. Additionally, we found that intraurban disparities were consistently worse for formerly redlined neighborhoods across environmental hazards, with redlined neighborhoods having higher pollution burdens (77% of redlined neighborhoods vs 18% of greenlined neighborhoods), more noise (72% vs 18%), less vegetation (86% vs 12%), and elevated temperature (72% vs 20%), than their respective city's average. Our findings highlight that redlining, a policy abolished in 1968, remains an environmental justice concern by shaping the environmental quality of Californian urban neighborhoods.

There have been major advances in the science to predict the likely environmental concentrations of nanomaterials, which is a key component of exposure and subsequent risk assessment. Considerable progress has been since the first Material Flow Analyses (MFAs) in 2008, which were based on very limited information, to more refined current tools that take into account engineered nanoparticle (ENP) size distribution, form, dynamic release, and better-informed release factors. These MFAs provide input for all environmental fate models (EFMs), that generate estimates of particle flows and concentrations in various environmental compartments. While MFA models provide valuable information on the magnitude of ENP release, they do not account for fate processes, such as homo- and heteroaggregation, transformations, dissolution, or corona formation. EFMs account for these processes in differing degrees. EFMs can be divided into multimedia compartment models (e.g., atmosphere, waterbodies and their sediments, soils in various landuses), of which there are currently a handful with varying degrees of complexity and process representation, and spatially-resolved watershed models which focus on the water and sediment compartments. Multimedia models have particular applications for considering predicted environmental concentrations (PECs) in particular regions, or for developing generic "fate factors" (i.e., overall persistence in a given compartment) for life-cycle assessment. Watershed models can track transport and eventual fate of emissions into a flowing river, from multiple sources along the waterway course, providing spatially and temporally resolved PECs. Both types of EFMs can be run with either continuous sources of emissions and environmental conditions, or with dynamic emissions (e.g., temporally varying for example as a new nanomaterial is introduced to the market, or with seasonal applications), to better understand the situations that may lead to peak PECs that are more likely to result in exceedance of a toxicological threshold. In addition, bioaccumulation models have been developed to predict the internal concentrations that may accumulate in exposed organisms, based on the PECs from EFMs. The main challenge for MFA and EFMs is a full validation against observed data. To date there have been no field studies that can provide the kind of dataset(s) needed for a true validation of the PECs. While EFMs have been evaluated against a few observations in a small number of locations, with results that indicate they are in the right order of magnitude, there is a great need for field data. Another major challenge is the input data for the MFAs, which depend on market data to estimate the production of ENPs. The current information has major gaps and large uncertainties. There is also a lack of robust analytical techniques for quantifying ENP properties in complex matrices; machine learning may be able to fill this gap. Nevertheless, there has been major progress in the tools for generating PECs. With the emergence of nano- and microplastics as a leading environmental concern, some EFMs have been adapted to these materials. However, caution is needed, since most nano- and microplastics are not engineered, therefore their characteristics are difficult to generalize, and there are new fate and transport processes to consider.

Coppe and zinc are priority pollutants in city soils. Copper and zinc are the limiting factors for lawn grasses. Cell selection can increase the resistance of lawn grasses to zinc and copper. The effect of zinc on the morphogenic ability of the callus was determined. The results of this study showed that zinc is less toxic to calli than copper. The method of obtaining lawn grass resistant to zinc has been developed. The results were used to develop the cell selection technology for obtaining plants resistant to the complex effect of zinc and copper. Concentrations of Copper (75 mg/l) and zinc (150 mg/L) were selected as selective. The author developed the cell selection scheme for obtaining plants resistant to the complex effect of Cu and Zn. This study investigates the pyrolysis and adsorption properties of biochar derived from coconut shell (BC-CS), rice husk (BC-RH), and cow manure (BC-CM) under varying thermal treatment conditions. Biochar samples were produced at 800 °C with residence times ranging from 0 to 60 min. Their characteristics were analyzed using their Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface area, total pore volume, and pore diameter measurements. BC-CM exhibited the highest BET surface area of 263.3 m2/g and a total pore volume of 0.164 cm3/g, while BC-RH and BC-CS showed maximum BET surface areas of 220.62 m2/g and 197.38 m2/g, respectively. Nitrogen adsorption–desorption isotherms revealed distinct microporous and mesoporous structures, with BC-CM demonstrating superior adsorption capacity across all relative pressures. The adsorption kinetics of methylene blue (MB) were examined at initial concentrations of 1 ppm, 5 ppm, and 10 ppm, with varying biochar doses (0.1 g, 0.3 g, and 0.5 g). The results showed that the adsorption rate constant (k) decreased with higher initial MB concentrations, while the equilibrium adsorption capacity (qe) increased. BC-CM achieved the highest qe of 2.18 mg/g at 10 ppm and a 0.5 g dose, followed by BC-RH-800-45 (1.145 mg/g) and BC-CS (0.340 mg/g). The adsorption process was well described by a pseudo-second-order kinetic model, indicating chemisorption as the dominant mechanism. Increasing biochar doses improved MB removal efficiency, highlighting the dose-dependent nature of adsorption. These findings underscore the importance of optimizing pyrolysis parameters to enhance biochar's adsorption performance and identify key factors influencing its effectiveness in environmental applications. Aim We investigated whether there was interspecies and intraspecies variation in spore germination of 12 strains of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi when co-entrapped with the diazotrophic plant growth-promoting bacteria, Azospirillum brasilense Sp7 in alginate hydrogel beads. Methods and results Twelve Rhizophagus irregularis, Rhizophagus intraradices , and Funneliformis mosseae strains were separately combined with a live culture of Azospirillum brasilense Sp7. Each fungal–bacterial consortia was supplemented with sodium alginate to a 2% concentration (v/v) and cross-linked in calcium chloride (2% w/v) to form biodegradable hydrogel beads. One hundred beads from each combination (total of 1200) were fixed in solidified modified Strullu and Romand media. Beads were observed for successful spore germination and bacterial growth over 14 days. In all cases, successful growth of A. brasilense was observed. For arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, interspecies variation in spore germination was observed, with R. intraradices having the highest germination rate (64.3%), followed by R. irregularis (45.5%) and F. mosseae (40.3%). However, a difference in intraspecies germination was only observed among strains of R. irregularis and F. mosseae. Despite having varying levels of germination, even the strains with the lowest potential were still able to establish with the plant host Brachypodium distachyon in a model system. Conclusions Arbuscular mycorrhizal spore germination varied across strains when co-entrapped with a diazotrophic plant growth-promoting bacteria. This demonstrates that hydrogel beads containing a mixed consortium hold potential as a sustainable biofertilizer and that compatibility tests remain an important building block when aiming to create a hydrogel biofertilizer that encases a diversity of bacteria and fungi. Moving forward, further studies should be conducted to test the efficacy of these hydrogel biofertilizers on different crops across varying climatic conditions in order to optimize their potential. Fluoroalkylether substances (ether PFAS) constitute a large group of emerging PFAS with uncertain environmental fate. Among them, GenX is the well-known alternative to perfluorooctanoic acid and one of the six proposed PFAS to be regulated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. This study investigated the structure-biodegradability relationship for 12 different ether PFAS with a carboxylic acid headgroup in activated sludge communities. Only polyfluorinated ethers with at least one -CH2- moiety adjacent to or a C=C bond in the proximity of the ether bond underwent active biotransformation via oxidative and hydrolytic O-dealkylation. The bioreactions at ether bonds led to the formation of unstable fluoroalcohol intermediates subject to spontaneous defluorination. We further demonstrated that this aerobic biotransformation/defluorination could complement the advanced reduction process in a treatment train system to achieve more cost-effective treatment for GenX and other recalcitrant perfluorinated ether PFAS. These findings provide essential insights into the environmental fate of ether PFAS, the design of biodegradable alternative PFAS, and the development of cost-effective ether PFAS treatment strategies.

The search for potent plastic-degrading bacteria has been a focal point of research over the recent decades to develop sustainable methods for plastic waste management. Despite promising results at the laboratory scale, replicating the same at the field scale has been limited. Natural extremophilic conditions of the landfill host many plastic-degrading bacteria, and recently, culture-independent Next-Generation Sequencing metagenomics approaches are being adopted to screen them and exploit their utilities. However, one of the main challenges is the difficulty in designing the optimum artificial test conditions for understanding the growth and metabolic activities of the concerned microorganisms. In the current study using precision metagenomics, genes coding for PET and PHA degrading enzymes were screened from a landfill-mined soil-like fraction (LMSF) sample, with landfill soil under a freshly deposited waste dump acting as the control. Subsequently, thorough geoenvironmental characterization of the samples was performed to generate an understanding of the growth conditions of the microorganisms. Genes encoding for MHETase outpopulated the genes encoding for PETase in LMSF, while the reverse trend was observed in the control. The abundance and taxonomic distribution of the hosts containing genes of PETase and MHETase enzymes in the samples, when co-related with the FTIR spectra of the samples, indicated that the PET residues might have possibly degraded to MHET under natural conditions. Usually, commercial composts, which are already a market-ready product for the agriculture sector, are used for polymer composting, which is not sustainable in the long run. The structural and functional patterns of the microbes obtained in the metagenomics study and permissible levels of leachable heavy metals generate promise for the landfill-mined soil-like fractions to be potentially used for polymer degradation. Alongside this, the presence of a monotypic oceanic genus Plesiocystis in the landfill environment was confirmed, which is of utmost importance to the field of microbial ecology.Highlights: Variation of microbial diversity in landfill associated geoenvironments with differential exposure to extremophilic conditions. BACKGROUND: Methanotrophs play an important role in mitigating methane (CH4) emissions in ecosystems. They closely interact with other microorganisms forming communities where the cross‐feeding of metabolites, presumably methanol (MeOH), is essential for the growth and activity of non‐methanotrophs. The experiments in this study were focused on investigating the effect of adding the supernatant from a methanotrophic consortium to pure cultures of Methylomonas methanica. RESULTS: Methanol dehydrogenase inhibition caused the accumulation of MeOH, which resulted in a significant production after 3 h, with 1.99 mmol L−1 CH3OH. The addition of the supernatant was associated with the excretion of MeOH by M. methanica and enhancement of the CH4 consumption rate, despite a reduction in growth. The maximum MeOH concentrations were between 0.7 and 1.5 mmol L−1 CH3OH. CONCLUSION: These findings indicate that MeOH excretion may indeed be linked to a metabolic imbalance, which could potentially be compensated through the cross‐feeding of metabolites within the methanotrophic community. © 2024 The Authors. The chemical nature and stability of reduced dissolved organic sulfur (DOSRed) have implications on the biogeochemical cycling of trace and major elements across fresh and marine aquatic environments, but the underlying processes governing DOSRed stability remain obscure. Here, dissolved organic matter (DOM) was isolated from a sulfidic wetland, and laboratory experiments quantified dark and photochemical oxidation of DOSRed using atomic-level measurement of sulfur X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy. DOSRed was completely resistant to oxidation by molecular oxygen in the dark and underwent rapid and quantitative oxidation to inorganic sulfate (SO42-) in the presence of sunlight. The rate of DOSRed oxidation to SO42- greatly exceeded that of DOM photomineralization, resulting in a 50% loss of total DOS and 78% loss of DOSRed over 192 h of irradiance. Sulfonates (DOSSO3) and other minor oxidized DOS functionalities were not susceptible to photochemical oxidation. The observed susceptibility of DOSRed to photodesulfurization, which has implications on carbon, sulfur, and mercury cycling, should be comprehensively evaluated across diverse aquatic environments of differing DOM composition.

Fungi and laccase mediator systems (LMSs) have a proven track record of oxidizing recalcitrant organic compounds. There has been considerable interest in applying LMSs to the treatment of perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs), a class of ubiquitous and persistent environmental contaminants. Some laboratory experiments have indicated modest losses of PFAAs over extended periods, but there have been no clear demonstrations of a transformation mechanism or the kinetics that would be needed for remediation applications. We set out to determine if this was a question of identifying and optimizing a rate-limiting step but discovered that observed losses of PFAAs were experimental artifacts. While unable to replicate the oxidation of PFAAs, we show that interactions of the PFAA compounds with laccase and laccase mediator mixtures could cause an artifact that mimics transformation (≲60%) of PFAAs. Furthermore, we employed a surrogate compound, carbamazepine (CBZ), and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy to probe the formation of the radical species that had been proposed to be responsible for contaminant oxidation. We confirmed that under conditions where sufficient radical concentrations were produced to oxidize CBZ, no PFAA removal took place.

The flea beetle Nisotra uniformis Jacoby is a widespread pest of malvaceous crops for which synthetic chemical insecticides remain the principal control tool, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. With the ultimate aim of developing a microbial alternative for N. uniformis control, we conducted laboratory experiments (25 ± 1°C; 70 - 80% RH) to evaluate the biological attributes of three Cameroonian isolates of the entomopathogenic fungi Beauveria bassiana (Balsamo-Crivelli) Vuillemin and Metarhizium anisopliae sensu lato (Metchnikoff) Sorokin. Spore germination rates of the isolates varied from 0.5% after 4 hrs to 100% after 24 hrs on PDA medium, with MIITAC11.3.4 spores germinating fastest. Pathogenicity tests consisted of dipping adult beetles in conidial suspensions. All isolates were pathogenic to N. uniformis, with corrected mortalities varying between 23.3 - 86.7%. BIITAC-O-2 had the lowest LC50 at 5.17 × 106 conidia/ml, while MIITAC11.3.4 and BIITAC6.2.2 had LC50 at 4.11 × 107 conidia/ml, and 2.00 × 108 conidia/ml, respectively. BIITAC6.2.2 produced the shortest time to the highest mortality rate (1.17 days) and the shortest LT50 of 1.64 days but only at the highest concentration, followed by the two highest concentrations of MIITAC11.3.4 (LT50 at 3.43 and 5.70 days). The c parameter in the Weibull model showed that BIITAC-O-2 caused the highest rate of increase in mortality (2.42) at the highest concentration, followed by MIITAC11.3.4 (1.09) and BIITAC6.2.2 (0.50). The results of our study provide the basis for including N. uniformis in the ongoing development of BIITAC6.2.2 and MIITAC11.3.4 into biopesticide while continuing with further laboratory studies on BIITAC-O-2.

The composition of microbial contaminants of soil samples contaminated with oil and oil products from oil depots of ports in southern Ukraine was investigated, and the possibility of their bioremediation by microorganisms present in the soil was determined. The microbiological landscape of the soil contaminated with oil and oil products was established, the quantitative and qualitative characteristics, group and dendrological composition of microorganisms were determined, and their potential ability to biodegrade petroleum hydrocarbons was determined. The degree of sanitary and ecological contamination of the samples was characterized by the number of the main groups of microorganisms - mesophilic aerobic and facultative anaerobic microorganisms (MAFAnM), molds, yeasts, as well as the dominance of MAFAnM by 3-5 orders among the studied groups of microorganisms. According to MAFANM, the number of thermophilic bacteria, titers of nitrifying bacteria, E. coli, Clostridium perfringens, bacteria of the genus Proteus, and the degree of oil contamination, the soil samples studied are characterized as contaminated and heavily contaminated. According to the study of morphological, tintorial, cultural, biochemical properties, 130 species were identified and 9 morphogroups of bacteria in oil-contaminated soil samples were determined. A dendrogram was constructed based on the set of studied properties of the isolated microorganisms. According to the results of the screening, the microorganisms isolated from contaminated soil samples are capable of biodegradation of long-chain alkanes of petroleum hydrocarbons. The identified groups of microorganisms can be arranged in the following sequence in order of increasing this indicator: Bacillus subtilis and Paenibacillus macerans ˂ Paenibacillus polymyxa ˂ Bacillus licheniformis ˂ Bacillus thuringiensis ˂ Bacillus megaterium ˂ Bacillus pumilis ˂ Bacillus cereus ˂ Paenibacillus circulans. Paenibacillus circulans and Bacillus cereus were identified as the most promising strains, biotransforming up to 48 percent of the total amount of hydrocarbons.

ContextCardiovascular disease (CVD) and heart failure (HF) are major causes of mortality in low-income populations and differ by sex. Risk assessment that incorporates cardiac biomarkers is common. However, research evaluating the utility of biomarkers rarely includes controlled substances, which may influence biomarker levels and thus influence CVD risk assessment.Materials and methodsWe identified the effects of multiple substances on soluble "suppression of tumorigenicity 2" (sST2), a biomarker of adverse cardiac remodelling, in 245 low-income women. Adjusting for CVD risk factors, we examined associations between substance use and sST2 over six monthly visits.ResultsMedian age was 53 years and 74% of participants were ethnic minority women. An sST2 level > 35 ng/mL (suggesting cardiac remodelling) during ≥1 study visit was observed in 44% of participants. In adjusted analysis, higher sST2 levels were significantly and positively associated with the presence of cocaine (Adjusted Linear Effect [ALE]:1.10; 95% CI:1.03-1.19), alcohol (ALE:1.10; 95% CI:1.04-1.17), heroin (ALE:1.25; 95% CI:1.10-1.43), and the interaction between heroin and fentanyl use.ConclusionResults suggest that the use of multiple substances influences the level of sST2, a biomarker often used to evaluate cardiovascular risk. Incorporating substance use alongside cardiac biomarkers may improve CVD risk assessment in vulnerable women.

Brazil, the largest producer of e-waste in Latin America, recently enacted a new law for the reverse logistics of this waste. The implementation of the new regulation will require the integration of different stakeholders to overcome existing barriers including lack of awareness, data and technical expertise in e-waste management, as well as the existence on an illegal e-waste recycling market. A reverse logistics model is described as a potential solution to these barriers if the challenges to the model's implementation are resolved.

A novel photosensitized living biohybrid was fabricated by inward-to-outward assembly of amine-functionalized carbon dots (NCDs) and polydopamine (PDA) to Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 and applied for high-efficiency, microbial-photoreduction of Cr(VI). Within a 72 h test period, biohybrids achieved a pronounced catalytic reduction capacity (100%) for 100 mg/L Cr(VI) under visible illumination, greatly surpassing the poor capacity (only 2.5%) displayed by the wild strain under dark conditions. Modular configurations of NCDs and PDA afforded biohybrids with a large electron flux by harvesting extracellular photoelectrons generated from illuminated NCDs and increasing reducing equivalents released from an enlarged intracellular NADH/NAD+ pool. Further, increased production of intracellular c-type cytochromes and extracellular flavins resulting from the modular configuration enhanced the biohybrid electron transport ability. The enhancement of electron transport was also attributed to more conductive conduits at NCDs-PDA junction interfaces. Moreover, because NCDs are highly reductive, the enhanced Cr(VI) reduction was also attributed to direct reduction by the NCDs and the direct Cr(VI) reduction by sterile NCDs-assembled biohybrid was up to 20% in the dark. Overall, a highly efficient strategy for removal/transformation of Cr(VI) by using NCD-assembled photosensitized biohybrids was proposed in this work, which greatly exceeded the performance of Cr(VI)-remediation strategies based on conventional microbial technologies.

To supply adequate food, the ongoing and unrestrained administration of nitrogen fertilizer to agricultural fields is polluting the climate and living organisms. On the other hand, the agriculture sector urgently needs a technological upgrade to effectively confront hunger and poverty. Here, we report a rapid synthesis of zinc and magnesium-doped hydroxyapatite-urea nanohybrids for slow release and delivery of nitrogen to wheat and rice crops. Nanohybrids slowly release nitrogen for up to six weeks compared to the burst release of nitrogen from urea, and their use substantially reduces, by at least 3.8 times, ammonia emissions into the environment compared with that of urea fertilizer. A half‑nitrogen dose applied as multi-nutrient complexed nanohybrids maintained crop growth, yield, and nutritional compositions in wheat and subsequent rice crops. Nanohybrids enhanced the wheat crop yield and nitrogen uptake by 22.13% and 58.30%, respectively. The synthesized nitrogen nanohybrids remained in the soil for two continuous crop cycles, reduced ammonia volatilization, and achieved nitrogen delivery to the crops. Additionally, soil dehydrogenase activity (534.55% above control) and urease activities (81.82% above control) suggest that nanohybrids exhibited no adverse impact on soil microorganisms. Our comprehensive study demonstrates the advantages of 'doping' as a method for tailoring hydroxyapatite nanoparticles properties for extended agricultural and environmental applications. The use of nanohybrids substantially reduced greenhouse gas emissions and enabled the reduction, by half, of nitrogen inputs into the agricultural fields. This study, therefore, reports a novel nano-enabled platform of engineered hydroxyapatite-urea nanohybrids as a nitrogen fertilizer for efficient nitrogen delivery that results in improved crop growth while minimizing environmental pollution.

Trianthema portulacastrum is a dietary and medicinal plant that has gained substantial importance due to its pharmacological properties. This plant was used for its various healing properties since the ancient period in ayurvedic system of medicine. The green synthesis technique is an eco-friendly as well as cost effective technique which can produce more biocompatible nanoparticles when compared with those fabricated by physio-chemical methods. Therefore, nanoparticles produced by green synthesis are credible alternatives to those which are produced by conventional synthesis techniques. This research mainly aims to produce nanoparticles with the methanolic leaf extract of T. portulacastrum. The optimized nanoparticles were further analyzed for anti-fungal, anti-bacterial and antioxidant properties. Disk diffusion assay was used for the determination of the antimicrobial property and on the other hand, DPPH radical scavenging assay as well as hydrogen peroxide scavenging activity proved the antioxidant property of the formulation. The study revealed that Escherichia coli (gram negative strain) shows greater zone of inhibition when compared with Bacillus subtilis (gram positive bacteria). The nanoparticles have also been reported to show significant anti-fungal activity against the strains of Aspergillus niger and Fusarium oxysporum which proves its desirability for its further use against both bacterial as well as fungal infections. Summary: As a research infrastructure with a mission to provide services for bioinformatics, ELIXIR aims to identify and inform its target audiences. Here, we present a survey on a community of researchers studying the environment with omics approaches in Greece, one of the youngest member countries of ELIXIR. Personal interviews followed by quantitative and qualitative analysis were employed to document interactions and practices of the community and to perform a gap analysis for the transition toward multiomics and systems biology. Environmental omics in Greece mostly concerns production of data, in large majority on microbes and non-model organisms. Our survey highlighted (1) the popularity and suitability of targeted hands-on training events; (2) data quality and management issues as important elements for the transition to multiomics, and (3) lack of knowledge and misconceptions regarding interoperability, metadata standards, and pre-registration. The publicly available collected answers represent a valuable resource in view of future strategic planning.

Summary: Glacier-fed waters create strong environmental filtering for biota, whereby different organisms may assume distinct distribution patterns. By using environmental DNA-based metabarcoding, we investigated the multi-group biodiversity distribution patterns of the Parlung No. 4 Glacier, on the Tibetan Plateau. Altogether, 642 taxa were identified from the meltwater stream and the downstream Ranwu Lake, including 125 cyanobacteria, 316 diatom, 183 invertebrate, and 18 vertebrate taxa. As the distance increased from the glacier terminus, community complexity increased via sequential occurrences of cyanobacteria, diatoms, invertebrates, and vertebrates, as well as increasing taxa numbers. The stream and lake showed different community compositions and distinct taxa. Furthermore, the correlations with environmental factors and community assembly mechanisms showed group- and habitat-specific patterns. Our results reveal the rapid spatial succession and increasing community complexity along glacial flowpaths and highlight the varying adaptivity of different organisms, while also providing insight into the ecosystem responses to global change.

Summary: Serratia marcescens is an opportunistic pathogen that survives in inhospitable environments causing large outbreaks, particularly in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs). Genomic studies revealed that most S. marcescens nosocomial infections are caused by a specific clone (here “Infectious clone”). Whole genome sequencing (WGS) is the only portable method able to identify this clone, but it requires days to obtain results. We present a cultivation-free hypervariable-locus melting typing (HLMT) protocol for the fast detection and typing of S. marcescens, with 100% detection capability on mixed samples and a limit of detection that can reach the 10 genome copies. The protocol was able to identify the S. marcescens infectious clone with 97% specificity and 96% sensitivity when compared to WGS, yielding typing results portable among laboratories. The protocol is a cost and time saving method for S. marcescens detection and typing for large environmental/clinical surveillance screenings, also in low-middle income countries.

Air pollution exposure disparities by race/ethnicity and socioeconomic status have been analyzed using data aggregated at various spatial scales. Our research question is this: To what extent does the spatial scale of data aggregation impact the estimated exposure disparities? We compared disparities calculated using data spatially aggregated at five administrative scales (state, county, census tract, census block group, census block) in the contiguous United States in 2010. Specifically, for each of the five spatial scales, we calculated national and intraurban disparities in exposure to fine particles (PM2.5) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) by race/ethnicity and socioeconomic characteristics using census demographic data and an empirical statistical air pollution model aggregated at that scale. We found, for both pollutants, that national disparity estimates based on state and county scale data often substantially underestimated those estimated using tract and finer scales; in contrast, national disparity estimates were generally consistent using tract, block group, and block scale data. Similarly, intraurban disparity estimates based on tract and finer scale data were generally well correlated for both pollutants across urban areas, although in some cases intraurban disparity estimates were substantially different, with tract scale data more frequently leading to underestimates of disparities compared to finer scale analyses.

SARS-CoV-2 Spike is a key protein that mediates viral entry into cells and elicits antibody responses. Its importance in infection, diagnostics, and vaccinations has created a large demand for purified Spike for clinical and research applications. Spike is difficult to express, prompting modifications to the protein and expression platforms to improve yields. Alternatively, the Spike receptor-binding domain (RBD) is commonly expressed with higher titers, though it has lower sensitivity in serological assays. Here, we improve transient Spike expression in Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells. We demonstrate that Spike titers increase significantly over the expression period, maximizing at 14 mg L-1 on day 7. In comparison, RBD titers peak at 54 mg L-1 on day 3. Next, we develop eight Spike truncations (T1-T8) in pursuit of truncation with high expression and antibody binding. The truncations T1 and T4 express at 130 and 73 mg L-1 , respectively, which are higher than our RBD titers. Purified proteins were evaluated for binding to antibodies raised against full-length Spike. T1 has similar sensitivity as Spike against a monoclonal antibody and even outperforms Spike for a polyclonal antibody. These results suggest that T1 is a promising Spike alternative for use in various applications.

Nano-sized titanium dioxide (nTiO2) is one of the most commonly used materials, however the knowledge about the molecular basis for metabolic and physiological changes in phytoplankton is yet to be explored. In the present study we use a combination of targeted metabolomics, transcriptomics and physiological response studies to decipher the metabolic perturbation in green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii exposed for 72 h to increasing concentrations (2, 20, 100 and 200 mg L-1) of nTiO2 with primary sizes of 5, 15 and 20 nm. Results show that the exposure to all three nTiO2 materials induced perturbation of the metabolism of amino acids, nucleotides, fatty acids, tricarboxylic acids, antioxidants but not in the photosynthesis. The alterations of the most responsive metabolites were concentration and primary size-dependent despite the significant formation of micrometer-size aggregates and their sedimentation. The metabolic perturbations corroborate the observed physiological responses and transcriptomic results and confirmed the importance of oxidative stress as a major toxicity mechanism for nTiO2. Transcriptomics revealed also an important influence of nTiO2 treatments on the transport, adenosine triphosphate binding cassette transporters, and metal transporters, suggesting a perturbation in a global nutrition of the microalgal cell, which was most pronounced for exposure to 5 nm nTiO2. The present study provides for the first-time evidence for the main metabolic perturbations in green alga C. reinhardtii exposed to nTiO2 and helps to improve biological understanding of the molecular basis of these perturbations.

An end goal of fecal source tracking (FST) is to provide information on risk of transmission of waterborne illnesses associated with fecal contamination. Ideally, concentrations of FST markers in ambient waters would reflect exposure risk. Human mtDNA is an FST marker that is exclusively human in origin and may be elevated in feces of individuals experiencing gastrointestinal inflammation. In this study, we examined whether human mtDNA is elevated in fecal samples from individuals with symptomatic norovirus infections using samples from the United States (US), Mozambique, and Bangladesh. We quantified hCYTB484 (human mtDNA) and HF183/BacR287 (human-associated Bacteroides) FST markers using droplet digital polymerase chain reaction. We observed the greatest difference in concentrations of hCYTB484 when comparing samples from individuals with symptomatic norovirus infections versus individuals without norovirus infections or diarrhea symptoms: log10 increase of 1.42 in US samples (3,820% increase, p-value = 0.062), 0.49 in Mozambique (308% increase, p-value = 0.061), and 0.86 in Bangladesh (648% increase, p-value = 0.035). We did not observe any trends in concentrations of HF183/BacR287 in the same samples. These results suggest concentrations of fecal mtDNA may increase during symptomatic norovirus infection and that mtDNA in environmental samples may represent an unambiguously human source-tracking marker that correlates with enteric pathogen exposure risk.

Wearing of face coverings serves two purposes: reducing the concentration of ambient particles inhaled and reducing the emission of respiratory particles generated by the wearer. The efficiency of different face coverings depends on the material, design, and fit. Face coverings such as N95 respirators, when worn properly, are highly efficient at filtering ambient particles during inhalation. Some N95 respirators, as well as other face covering types, include a one-way valve to allow easier exhalation while still maintaining a high efficiency of filtration of inhaled ambient particles. The extent to which these valves decrease the efficiency of filtration of emitted respiratory particles is, however, not well established. Here, we show that different valved N95s exhibit highly variable filtration efficiencies for exhaled respiratory particles. As such, valved N95s may not provide reliable source control of respired particles and their use should be discouraged in situations in which such source control is needed.

Communities of color in the United States are systematically exposed to higher levels of air pollution. We explore here how redlining, a discriminatory mortgage appraisal practice from the 1930s by the federal Home Owners' Loan Corporation (HOLC), relates to present-day intraurban air pollution disparities in 202 U.S. cities. In each city, we integrated three sources of data: (1) detailed HOLC security maps of investment risk grades [A ("best"), B, C, and D ("hazardous", i.e., redlined)], (2) year-2010 estimates of NO2 and PM2.5 air pollution levels, and (3) demographic information from the 2010 U.S. census. We find that pollution levels have a consistent and nearly monotonic association with HOLC grade, with especially pronounced (>50%) increments in NO2 levels between the most (grade A) and least (grade D) preferentially graded neighborhoods. On a national basis, intraurban disparities for NO2 and PM2.5 are substantially larger by historical HOLC grade than they are by race and ethnicity. However, within each HOLC grade, racial and ethnic air pollution exposure disparities persist, indicating that redlining was only one of the many racially discriminatory policies that impacted communities. Our findings illustrate how redlining, a nearly 80-year-old racially discriminatory policy, continues to shape systemic environmental exposure disparities in the United States.

Targeting specific cells for sequencing is important for applications in cancer, microbiology, and infectious disease. Nucleic acid cytometry (NAC) is a powerful approach for accomplishing this because it allows specific cells to be isolated based on sequence biomarkers that are otherwise impossible to detect. However, existing methods require specialized microfluidic devices, limiting adoption. Here, a modified workflow is described that uses particle-templated emulsification (PTE) and flow cytometry to conduct the essential steps of cell detection and sorting normally accomplished by microfluidics. Our microfluidic-free workflow allows facile isolation and sequencing of cells, viruses, and nucleic acids and thus provides a powerful enrichment approach for targeted sequencing applications.

Two-dimensional (2D) engineered nanomaterials are widely used in consumer and industrial goods due to their unique chemical and physical characteristics. Engineered nanomaterials are incredibly small and capable of being aerosolized during manufacturing, with the potential for biological interaction at first-contact sites such as the eye and lung. The unique properties of 2D nanomaterials that make them of interest to many industries may also cause toxicity towards epithelial cells. Using murine and human respiratory epithelial cell culture models, we tested the cytotoxicity of eight 2D engineered nanomaterials: graphene (110 nm), graphene oxide (2 um), graphene oxide (400 nm), reduced graphene oxide (2 um), reduced graphene oxide (400 nm), partially reduced graphene oxide (400 nm), molybdenum disulfide (400 nm), and hexagonal boron nitride (150 nm). Non-graphene nanomaterials were also tested in human corneal epithelial cells for ocular epithelial cytotoxicity. Hexagonal boron nitride was found to be cytotoxic in mouse tracheal, human alveolar, and human corneal epithelial cells. Hexagonal boron nitride was also tested for inhibition of wound healing in alveolar epithelial cells; no inhibition was seen at sub-cytotoxic doses. Nanomaterials should be considered with care before use, due to specific regional cytotoxicity that also varies by cell type. Supported by U01ES027288 and T32HL007013 and T32ES007059.

This review gives concise information on green technology (GT) and Industrial Revolution 4.0 (IR 4.0). Climate change has begun showing its impacts on the environment, and the change is real. The devastating COVID-19 pandemic has negatively affected lives and the world from the deadly consequences at a social, economic, and environmental level. In order to balance this crisis, there is a need to transition toward green, sustainable forms of living and practices. We need green innovative technologies (GTI) and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies to develop green, durable, biodegradable, and eco-friendly products for a sustainable future. GTI encompasses all innovations that contribute to developing significant products, services, or processes that lower environmental harm, impact, and worsening while augmenting natural resource utilization. Sensors are typically used in IoT environmental monitoring applications to aid ecological safety by nursing air or water quality, atmospheric or soil conditions, and even monitoring species' movements and habitats. The industries and the governments are working together, have come up with solutions—the Green New Deal, carbon pricing, use of bio-based products as biopesticides, in biopharmaceuticals, green building materials, bio-based membrane filters for removing pollutants, bioenergy, biofuels and are essential for the green recovery of world economies. Environmental biotechnology, Green Chemical Engineering, more bio-based materials to separate pollutants, and product engineering of advanced materials and environmental economies are discussed here to pave the way toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the UN and achieve the much-needed IR 4.0 for a greener-balanced environment and a sustainable future. Summary: This study investigated the potential of using SARS-CoV-2 viral concentrations in dust as an additional surveillance tool for early detection and monitoring of COVID-19 transmission. Dust samples were collected from 8 public locations in 16 districts of Bangkok, Thailand, from June to August 2021. SARS-CoV-2 RNA concentrations in dust were quantified, and their correlation with community case incidence was assessed. Our findings revealed a positive correlation between viral concentrations detected in dust and the relative risk of COVID-19. The highest risk was observed with no delay (0-day lag), and this risk gradually decreased as the lag time increased. We observed an overall decline in viral concentrations in public places during lockdown, closely associated with reduced human mobility. The effective reproduction number for COVID-19 transmission remained above one throughout the study period, suggesting that transmission may persist in locations beyond public areas even after the lockdown measures were in place.

Quantum dots (QDs) are engineered semiconductor nanocrystals with unique fluorescent, quantum confinement, and quantum yield properties, making them valuable in a range of commercial and consumer imaging, display, and lighting technologies. Production and usage of QDs are increasing, which increases the probability of these nanoparticles entering the environment at various phases of their life cycle. This review discusses the major types and applications of QDs, their potential environmental exposures, fates, and adverse effects on organisms. For most applications, release to the environment is mainly expected to occur during QD synthesis and end-product manufacturing since encapsulation of QDs in these devices prevents release during normal use or landfilling. In natural waters, the fate of QDs is controlled by water chemistry, light intensity, and the physicochemical properties of QDs. Research on the adverse effects of QDs primarily focuses on sublethal endpoints rather than acute toxicity, and the differences in toxicity between pristine and weathered nanoparticles are highlighted. A proposed oxidative stress adverse outcome pathway framework demonstrates the similarities among metallic and carbon-based QDs that induce reactive oxygen species formation leading to DNA damage, reduced growth, and impaired reproduction in several organisms. To accurately evaluate environmental risk, this review identifies critical data gaps in QD exposure and ecological effects, and provides recommendations for future research. Future QD regulation should emphasize exposure and sublethal effects of metal ions released as the nanoparticles weather under environmental conditions. To date, human exposure to QDs from the environment and resulting adverse effects has not been reported.

Modeling oviposition as a function of female insect age, temperature, and host plant suitability may provide valuable insight into insect population growth of polyphagous insect pests at a landscape level. In this study, we quantified oviposition by beet leafhoppers, Circulifer (= Neoaliturus) tenellus (Baker) (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae), on four common non-agricultural host plant species [Erodium cicutarium (L.) L'Hér. (Geraniaceae), Kochia scoparia (L.) Schrader (Amaranthaceae), Plantago ovata Forsskál (Plantaginaceae), and Salsola tragus L. (Amaranthaceae)] at two constant temperature conditions. Additionally, temperature-based oviposition models for each host plant species were validated, under semi-field and greenhouse conditions. We found that K. scoparia was the most suitable host plant, and optimal temperature for oviposition was estimated to be 30.6°C. Accordingly, beet leafhoppers appear to be well-adapted to high-temperature conditions, so increasing temperatures due to climate change may favor population growth in non-agricultural areas. Maximum total fecundity (Rm) was used as an indicator of relative suitability of host plants. S. tragus has been considered an important non-agricultural host plant, however, we found that S. tragus and E. cicutarium have lower Rm compared to K. scoparia and P. ovata. The combination of detailed experimental oviposition bioassays, modeling, and model validation is considered widely relevant and applicable to host plant assessments and modeling of population dynamics of other polyphagous insect pests.

The object of the study is a preparation of ecotoxicant destructor based on bacterial strains of Pseudomonas fluorescens, Pseudomonas putida, Pseudomonas délhiensis and associations of nodule bacteria Rhizobium loti with Lotus corniculatus. It is established, that during the simultaneous use of the bacteria and the legume Lotus corniculatus the rate of oxidation of petroleum hydrocarbons increases three times in comparison with the degradation rate of the pollutant after the separate use of each bacterial strain. We have received the preparation of ecotoxicant destructor – dry heterogeneous mass consisting of viable microbial cells of strains of P. delhiensis and R. lotus, seeds of leguminous plant Lotus corniculatus and delignified sawdust. Oil destructive activity of the preparation is proved in the course of microfield experiments. The degradation of ecotoxicants is proved by capillary gas chromatography-mass spectrometry with mass-selective detection. Bacteria of the strains, included in the preparation, are non-pathogenic for humans and animals, biocompatible, environmentally safe, stable, unpretentious to nutritional needs, technological, do not persist in environmental objects in the absence of a substrate for destruction. The technology of the production of the preparation is developed. The results of these studies demonstrate the possibility of practical use of the degradative potential of the preparation in the course of the implementation of the measures for soil reclamation, cleaning up ecotoxicants and restoring its ecological status.

The oxidative transformation product of a common tire preservative, identified as N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-N'-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine quinone (6-PPDQ), has recently been found to contribute to "urban runoff mortality syndrome" in Coho salmon at nanogram per liter levels. Given the number of fish-bearing streams with multiple stormwater inputs, large-scale campaigns to identify 6-PPDQ sources and evaluate mitigation strategies will require sensitive, high-throughput analytical methods. We report the development and optimization of a direct sampling tandem mass spectrometry method for semiquantitative 6-PPDQ determinations using a thin polydimethylsiloxane membrane immersion probe. The method requires no sample cleanup steps or chromatographic separations, even in complex, heterogeneous samples. Quantitation is achieved by the method of standard additions, with a detection limit of 8 ng/L and a duty cycle of 15 min/sample. High-throughput screening provides semiquantitative concentrations with similar sensitivity and a full analytical duty cycle of 2.5 min/sample. Preliminary data and performance metrics are reported for 6-PPDQ present in representative environmental and stormwater samples. The method is readily adapted for real-time process monitoring, demonstrated by following the dissolution of 6-PPDQ from tire fragments and subsequent removal in response to added sorbents.

Copper (Cu) products, including copper oxide nanoparticles (nCuO), are critically important agricultural fungicides and algaecides. Foliar application onto crops and subsequent aerosol drift of these Cu products, especially nCuO, on to soil may alter nutrient cycling and microbial communities in both managed and unmanaged environments. We measured the influence of land use on soil microbial biomass and respiration in response to the addition of nCuO to an alluvial soil. Different land uses included grassland, forest and both organic and conventional managed row crops. Soil samples were amended with 1000 mg Cu per kg soil as CuCl2, 16 nm CuO (16nCuO), 42 nm CuO (42nCuO), and larger than nanoparticle sized bulk CuO (bCuO). Copper availability immediately increased in all soils following Cu addition in the order of CuCl2 > 16nCuO > 42nCuO > bCuO. After 70 days Cu availability was diminished across land uses and lowest in soils treated with bCuO. Using X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy, we determined that the relatively high availability of Cu after treatment with nanoparticle sized CuO was due to the dissolution of CuO particles and subsequent adsorption by soil materials. Respiration, an indicator of microbial activity, was suppressed by Cu additions, especially CuCl2. Copper effects on soil microbial biomass were sensitive to land use. In agricultural soils, microbial biomass was unaltered by Cu form, regardless of concentration, whereas in unmanaged soils, it decreased following exposure to CuCl2 and 42nCuO. Our results suggest that land use history has little impact on Cu chemical fate in soils, but strongly modulates microbial response to Cu exposure. These results are especially important for organic agricultural systems where copper fungicides are widely used but may suppress microbial mineralization of nutrients from soil organic matter.

The concept of the exposome was introduced over 15 years ago to reflect the important role that the environment exerts on health and disease. While originally viewed as a call-to-arms to develop more comprehensive exposure assessment methods applicable at the individual level and throughout the life course, the scope of the exposome has now expanded to include the associated biological response. In order to explore these concepts, a workshop was hosted by the Gunma University Initiative for Advanced Research (GIAR, Japan) to discuss the scope of exposomics from an international and multidisciplinary perspective. This Global Perspective is a summary of the discussions with emphasis on (1) top-down, bottom-up, and functional approaches to exposomics, (2) the need for integration and standardization of LC- and GC-based high-resolution mass spectrometry methods for untargeted exposome analyses, (3) the design of an exposomics study, (4) the requirement for open science workflows including mass spectral libraries and public databases, (5) the necessity for large investments in mass spectrometry infrastructure in order to sequence the exposome, and (6) the role of the exposome in precision medicine and nutrition to create personalized environmental exposure profiles. Recommendations are made on key issues to encourage continued advancement and cooperation in exposomics.

AbstractPhotosynthetic microalgae are an attractive source of food, fuel, or nutraceuticals, but commercial production of microalgae is limited by low spatial efficiency. In the present study we developed a simple photosynthetic hydrogel system that cultivates the green microalga, Marinichlorella kaistiae KAS603, together with a novel strain of the bacteria, Erythrobacter sp. We tested the performance of the co-culture in the hydrogel using a combination of chlorophyll-a fluorimetry, microsensing, and bio-optical measurements. Our results showed that growth rates in algal–bacterial hydrogels were about threefold enhanced compared to hydrogels with algae alone. Chlorophyll-a fluorimetry–based light curves found that electron transport rates were enhanced about 20% for algal–bacterial hydrogels compared to algal hydrogels for intermediate irradiance levels. We also show that the living hydrogel is stable under different environmental conditions and when exposed to natural seawater. Our study provides a potential bio-inspired solution for problems that limit the space-efficient cultivation of microalgae for biotechnological applications.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a large group of manmade chemicals that impose emerging environmental concerns. Among them, short-chain per- and polyfluorinated carboxylic acids represent an important subgroup used as building blocks of biologically active chemicals and functional materials. Some are also considered PFAS alternatives, and some could be byproducts of the physicochemical treatment of PFAS. However, little is known about the environmental fate of short-chain fluorinated carboxylic acids (FCAs) and their defluorination/transformation by microorganisms. To fill the knowledge gap, we investigated the structure-reactivity relationships in the aerobic defluorination of C3-C5 FCAs by activated sludge communities. Four structures exhibited greater than 20% defluorination, with 3,3,3-trifluoropropionic acid being almost completely defluorinated. We further analyzed the defluorination/transformation pathways and inferred the structures susceptible to aerobic microbial defluorination. We also demonstrated that the defluorination was via cometabolism. The findings advance the fundamental understanding of aerobic microbial defluorination and help assess the environmental fate of PFAS. Since some short-chain PFAS, such as 3,3,3-trifluoropropionic acid, are the incomplete defluorination byproducts of advanced reduction processes, their defluorination by activated sludge communities sheds light on the development of cost-effective chemical-biological PFAS treatment train systems.

The aim of the present work was the investigation of various cultivation conditions in order to provide a foundation for a sustainable, financially viable, and environmentally friendly cultivation system for the heterologous β-phellandrene production by Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803. Synechocystis cells were able to grow and form distinct colonies both at the internal and the external surfaces of calcium alginate beads and maintained their ability to produce β-phellandrene, in considerably higher amounts compared to suspension cultures, with maximum production after 6 days. Both immobilized and suspended Synechocystis cells exhibited a continuous and long-term ability to produce β-phellandrene, only by CO2 addition, without renewal of the nutrients or the growth medium. However, photoheterotrophic growth of Synechocystis, with glucose as an alternative carbon source, had a negative impact on the heterologous production β-phellandrene. Despite the fact that cell growth and biomass accumulation were pronounced under photoheterotrophic growth conditions, β-phellandrene production was substantially decreased, indicating that this growth condition is not recommended for scale-up applications. Finally, combination of alkaline (pH 10.5) and saline (600 mM NaCl), i.e., extremophilic for Synechocystis growth conditions, proved to be amenable to cell growth and β-phellandrene production, albeit yields were a bit lower. The results provide new approaches for the development of larger scale, environmentally friendly, and financially viable cultivation systems for sustainable heterologous production of terpenoids by Synechocystis.

Oxidation of organic contaminants by sulfate radical (SO4 •-) is becoming more popular for the treatment of hazardous waste sites by in situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) and industrial wastewater by advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). It is well documented that SO4 •- can produce similar oxygen-containing transformation products as hydroxyl radical-based treatment processes, but SO4 •- also has the potential to produce organosulfates by radical addition. Experiments conducted with a suite of 23 aromatic and 5 aliphatic compounds, including several contaminants typically detected at hazardous waste sites, demonstrated the formation of at least one stable sulfate-containing product for 25 of the compounds. These compounds likely exhibit higher mobility in the subsurface due to a lower affinity for surfaces (e.g., aquifer solids, activated carbon) than most other transformation products. Although the health risks associated with organosulfates are still uncertain, some aromatic organosulfates produced in this study (i.e. phenyl sulfate and p-cresyl sulfate) are known to be harmful uremic toxins. Further study of organosulfate formation, fate, and toxicity is needed before SO4 •--based treatment processes are more widely employed.

Fungi provide ecological and environmental services to humans, as well as health and nutritional benefits, and are vital to numerous industries. Fermented food and beverage products from fungi are circulating in the market, generating billions of USD. However, the highest potential monetary value of fungi is their role in blue carbon trading because of their ability to sequester large amounts of carbon in the soil. There are no conclusive estimates available on the global monetary value of fungi, primarily because there are limited data for extrapolation. This study outlines the contribution of fungi to the global economy and provides a first attempt at quantifying the global monetary value of fungi. Our estimate of USD 54.57 trillion provides a starting point that can be analysed and improved, highlighting the significance of fungi and providing an appreciation of their value. This paper identifies the different economically valuable products and services provided by fungi. By giving a monetary value to all important fungal products, services, and industrial applications underscores their significance in biodiversity and conservation. Furthermore, if the value of fungi is well established, they will be considered in future policies for effective ecosystem management. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
