Električna energija je oblik energije koji se ne može pohraniti, barem ne u dovoljnim količinama na isplativ način. Nemoguće ju je zamijeniti drugim proizvodima, a potražnja za njom je neelastična. To sve, električnu energiju čini drugačijom od svih drugih roba. Sredinom 80-ih godina klasična razmišljanja o elektroenergetskom sustavu su odbačena, a pojmovi kao što su deregulacija, privatizacija i liberalizacija su doveli do potpuno novog pristupa kako u proizvodnji tako i u trgovini električnom energijom. U ovom radu je prikazan način i razvoj preustroja elektroenergetskog sustava s naglaskom na države članice EU. To je dovelo do otvorenog i konkurentnog tržišta električne energije te zadnjih desetak godina do spajanja nacionalnih burzi električne energije u regionalne sa planom daljnjeg okrupnjivanja do razine jedinstvenog tržišta električne energije na području EU. Electrical energy is a form of energy that can not be stored, at least not in sufficient quantities in a cost effective manner. Iti s impossible to replace other products, and demand for it is inelastic. It all, electrical energy's makes it different from all other commodities. In the middle of 80s classic opinions of the power system are discarded, and terms such as deregulation, privatization and liberalization have led to a completely new approach as in production and trade of electrical energy. This work presents the way and development of reorganization of the electric power system with a focus on EU member states. This led to an open competitive electricity market, and the last ten years to the coupling of the national electricity markets to the regional with a plan of further coupling to the level of single electricity market in the EU.
