Purpose: Exercise training may influence on appetite hormones and energy homeostasis. Aims: The purpose of the current study was to investigate the effect of resistance training with elastic band (ERT) on ghrelin (GHRL) and obestatin (OBST) hormones' concentration changes in overweight men. Methods: Twenty male overweight (25 < BMI ≤ 29.5 kg/m2) voluntary participated in the current study and randomly assigned in the resistance training with elastic bands (ERT; n = 10), and control (Con; n = 10). Elastic resistance training was done three sessions in week in non-consecutive for 8 weeks. Blood sample was gathered before ERT and was repeated 48 h interval with the last session of exercise training. GHRL and OBST were assessed in the plasma. Also, functional capacity (Push UP: PU; Squat: SQ) was assessed, and body fat percentage (BF %) was estimated. Results: We found that there was a significant difference in GHRL in the ERT than control [time × group (p = 0.045; F = 4.38)]; however, there was no significant difference in OBST (p˃0.05). It was also seen that the interactive effect of time in the ERT (time × group) was significant for PU and SQ [(p = 0.004; F = 8.02), and SQ (p = 0.011; F = 8.1], respectively. Also, a decrease was found in BF% in the ERT than control (p ≤ 0.001). Conclusion: Finally, it can be concluded elastic resistance training with elastic bands improve the functional capacities and ghrelin hormone, and should be taken into consideration in the design of weight control protocols. Surface energy balance plays a major role in mass balance and glacier melting. In response to climate change, the influence of radiations and turbulent heat fluxes is a governing factor for glacier melting. In the present study, the energy budget method is used to estimate glacier melting at the grid level using ERA-5 data for Gangotri and Saraswati glaciers in Uttarakhand. Results indicate net radiation dominates the energy budget rather than heat fluxes. Temperature plays a key role in enhancing solar and net radiation, and a strong negative correlation is observed between the snow-covered area and heat fluxes. Turbulent heat fluxes have a strong influence on the snow-covered area of Gangotri, while for Saraswati, the radiations are major contributors. The relationship between snowmelt is directly linked with energy balance and temperature. Although Gangotri receives more energy than Saraswati, the annual average trend shows that Saraswati is showing a rise over the period. Melting is calculated at the grid level for both glaciers when referred to with available snowmelt data, and biases in data are observed. A very strong correlation of 0.99 and 0.96 is observed between calculated melting and available melt for Gangotri and Saraswati glaciers during the ablation months. The total melting calculated at the grid level for the Gangotri glacier region varies from 344.09 to 731.64 mm.w.e. a–1 and for the Saraswati glacier region, it ranges between 172.11 and 439.68 mm.w.e. a–1. The 22 years’ average melting rate is 541.17 and 281.75 mm.w.e. a–1 for Gangotri and Saraswati, respectively, as calculated from 2001 to 2022. Gangotri observes higher melting than Saraswati. Summary: Multivariate leaf trait correlations are hypothesized to originate from natural selection on carbon economics traits that control lifetime leaf carbon gain, and energy balance traits governing leaf temperatures, physiological rates, and heat injury. However, it is unclear whether macroevolution of leaf traits primarily reflects selection for lifetime carbon gain or energy balance, and whether photosynthetic heat tolerance is coordinated along these axes.To evaluate these hypotheses, we measured carbon economics, energy balance, and photosynthetic heat tolerance traits for 177 species (157 families) in a common garden that minimizes co‐variation of taxa and climate.We observed wide variation in carbon economics, energy balance, and heat tolerance traits. Carbon economics and energy balance (but not heat tolerance) traits were phylogenetically structured, suggesting macroevolution of leaf mass per area and leaf dry matter content reflects selection on carbon gain rather than energy balance. Carbon economics and energy balance traits varied along a common axis orthogonal to heat tolerance traits.Our results highlight a fundamental mismatch in the timescales over which morphological and heat tolerance traits respond to environmental variation. Whereas carbon economics and energy balance traits are constrained by species' evolutionary histories, photosynthetic heat tolerance traits are not and can acclimate readily to leaf microclimates. To address the issue of estimating soil moisture at a hyper-resolution scale, a methodology referred to as Precision Irrigation Soil Moisture Mapper (PrISMM), that includes three key components, is developed: high-resolution remotely sensed optical and thermal data, surface energy balance modeling, and site-specific soil analysis. An Unmanned Aerial Vehicle/System (UAV or UAS) collects high-resolution multispectral imagery in the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan study area. Orthomosaics are converted to thermal inertia estimates in a spatially distributed format using the remotely sensed data combined with a set of surface energy balance modeling equations. Using thermal and physical properties of soil gained from site-specific soil analysis, thermal inertia estimates were further converted from thermal inertia to daily volumetric soil water content (VSWC) with a horizonal resolution of 8.6 cm. A ground truthing dataset of measured VSWC values taken from a Time Domain Reflectometer was compared with model results, producing a reasonable correlation with an average coefficient of determination of (R2) = 0.79, an average root mean square error (RMSE) = 0.0408, and mean absolute error (MAE) = 0.0308. This study highlights a practical approach of estimating VSWC for irrigation purposes while providing superior spatio-temporal coverage over in situ methods. The authors envision that PrISMM can be implemented in water usage management by relating VSWC with weather forecasts and evapotranspiration rates to develop time-based spatially distributed irrigation management plans. In the recent years, as the center of energy metabolism, the role of hypothalamus in the development of obesity has been increasingly emphasiszed. Hypothalamic neural stem cells (htNSCs) which control adult neurogenesis play a crucial role in sensing the metabolic state of the body and maintaining energy balance by altering differentiation pathways, exosome functions, and mitigating inflammatory. By studying the hypothalamus and htNSCs, we can gain a better understanding of the mechanisms behind energy metabolism disorders in obesity and identify potential therapeutic targets for obesity and metabolic syndrome. Hypothalamic proopiomelanocortin (POMC) neurons are sensors of signals that reflect the energy stored in the body. Inducing mild stress in proopiomelanocortin neurons protects them from the damage promoted by the consumption of a high-fat diet, mitigating the development of obesity; however, the cellular mechanisms behind these effects are unknown. Here, we induced mild stress in a proopiomelanocortin neuron cell line by inhibiting Crif1. In proopiomelanocortin neurons exposed to high levels of palmitate, the partial inhibition of Crif1 reverted the defects in mitochondrial respiration and ATP production; this was accompanied by improved mitochondrial fusion/fission cycling. Furthermore, the partial inhibition of Crif1 resulted in increased reactive oxygen species production, increased fatty acid oxidation, and reduced dependency on glucose for mitochondrial respiration. These changes were dependent on the activity of CPT-1. Thus, we identified a CPT-1-dependent metabolic shift toward greater utilization of fatty acids as substrates for respiration as the mechanism behind the protective effect of mild stress against palmitate-induced damage of proopiomelanocortin neurons. Using a proopiomelanocortin cell line, we show that under exposure to a high concentration of palmitate, the partial inhibition of the mitochondrial protein Crif1 results in protection due to a metabolic shift warranted by the increased expression and activity of the mitochondrial fatty acid transporter CPT-1. Loss of ovarian function imparts increased susceptibility to obesity and metabolic disease. These effects are largely attributed to decreased estradiol (E2), but the role of increased follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) in modulating energy balance has not been fully investigated. Previous work that blocked FSH binding to its receptor in mice suggested this hormone may play a part in modulating body weight and energy expenditure after ovariectomy (OVX). We used an alternate approach to isolate the individual and combined contributions of FSH and E2 in mediating energy imbalance and changes in tissue-level metabolic health. Female Wistar rats were ovariectomized and given the gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) antagonist degarelix to suppress FSH production. E2 and FSH were then added back individually and in combination for a period of 3 wk. Energy balance, body mass composition, and transcriptomic profiles of individual tissues were obtained. In contrast to previous studies, suppression and replacement of FSH in our paradigm had no effect on body weight, body composition, food intake, or energy expenditure. We did, however, observe organ-specific effects of FSH that produced unique transcriptomic signatures of FSH in retroperitoneal white adipose tissue. These included reductions in biological processes related to lipogenesis and carbohydrate transport. In addition, rats administered FSH had reduced liver triglyceride concentration (P < 0.001), which correlated with FSH-induced changes at the transcriptomic level. Although not appearing to modulate energy balance after loss of ovarian function in rats, FSH may still impart tissue-specific effects in the liver and white adipose tissue that might affect the metabolic health of those organs. NEW & NOTEWORTHY: We find no effect of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) on energy balance using a novel model in which rats are ovariectomized, subjected to gonadotropin-releasing hormone antagonism, and systematically given back FSH by osmotic pump. This article aims to demonstrate the technical capabilities and effectiveness of an energy production and management system for school facilities using a modular solution. The system is assumed to generate electricity from renewable sources, such as wind or sun. The potential of renewable energy sources in Cracow, Poland, was assessed, with a focus on solar energy (photovoltaic panels, PV). Taking into account the installation of heating and other equipment, an analysis of the facility's electricity demand was carried out. The study recommended the use of a heat pump system to heat and cool the facility. Renewable energy sources will meet 81% of the facility's projected annual demand, according to the study. An analysis of the energy consumption and production profiles shows that almost 69% of the energy produced by the PV panels is consumed on site. Of the remaining energy, 31% is fed back into the grid and sold to the grid operator or used by other facilities within the shared settlement. The overall balance results in a small electricity deficit that must be covered by the grid. If suitable sites are available, the facilities under study could consider installing a wind turbine as a potential supplement to the energy deficit. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Exercising women have a high prevalence of menstrual disturbances. In 2003, it was suggested that disruption in luteinizing hormone (LH) pulsatility occurs below a threshold of energy availability (EA) of 30 kcal/kg lean body mass (LBM)/day. This paper is a critical review of the evidence regarding the theory that disruptions to the reproductive axis and menstrual disturbances occur below the proposed threshold. Short-term laboratory studies demonstrated that 4–5 days of an EA below 30 kcal/kg LBM/day, induced with or without exercise, decreased serum triiodothyronine and LH pulse frequency, and increased LH pulse amplitude in sedentary, regularly menstruating women. Fewer studies have investigated downstream ovarian effects after long-term exposure to low EA. The Sargent Camp Study was the first randomized trial that induced luteal phase defects, delayed menses, and anovulation by causing weight loss (−4 ± 0.3 kg) with an abrupt increase in exercise volume for two menstrual cycles. The BioEnergetics Study was a randomized controlled trial that induced varying levels of energy deficits by manipulating energy intake and expenditure for three menstrual cycles. LH pulse frequency and triiodothyronine decreased, and 57% of women developed luteal phase defects, anovulation, and/or oligomenorrhea. An EA below 30 kcal/kg fat free mass/day increased the chance of experiencing a menstrual disturbance by 50%. However, menstrual disturbances were observed above and below that EA threshold, and changes in LH pulse frequency predicted only luteal phase defects, not oligomenorrhea or anovulation. This work aims to provide a thermodynamic modeling to determine the high heating value (HHV) of food samples, particularly high-calorie food. The HHV is measured experimentally, and a rigorous model is constructed from these data. A bomb calorimeter under controlled conditions is used to experimentally determine the HHV of four commercial snacks (Twix, Snickers, Peanut Planters, and KitKat). The samples are characterized by ultimate analysis. The rigorous modeling is developed using a modified Peng-Robinson (PR) Equation of State (EoS) developed by Forero-Velásquez (FV). Also, mass and energy balances, vapor-liquid equilibria equations, and the reaction speed rate are stated. The results indicate that the average absolute deviation between the nutritional information label and rigorous modeling is 6.54%. Also, an equation is suggested for rapid estimation of HHV using data from rigorous modeling. The results show that the developed linear equation is simpler and provides an absolute relative deviation of 11.04% compared to other sophisticated or multiparametric reported literature models with deviations of 16.62%. Background: Infection with Angiostrongylus cantonensis (AC) in humans or mice can lead to severe eosinophilic meningitis or encephalitis, resulting in various neurological impairments. Developing effective neuroprotective drugs to improve the quality of life in affected individuals is critical. Methods: We conducted a Gene Ontology enrichment analysis on microarray gene expression (GSE159486) in the brains of AC-infected mice. The expression levels of melanin-concentrating hormone (MCH) were confirmed through real-time quantitative PCR (RT–qPCR) and immunofluorescence. Metabolic parameters were assessed using indirect calorimetry, and mice's energy metabolism was evaluated via pathological hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining, serum biochemical assays, and immunohistochemistry. Behavioral tests assessed cognitive and motor functions. Western blotting was used to measure the expression of synapse-related proteins. Mice were supplemented with MCH via nasal administration. Results: Postinfection, a marked decrease in Pmch expression and the encoded MCH was observed. Infected mice exhibited significant weight loss, extensive consumption of sugar and white fat tissue, reduced movement distance, and decreased speed, compared with the control group. Notably, nasal administration of MCH countered the energy imbalance and dyskinesia caused by AC infection, enhancing survival rates. MCH treatment also increased the expression level of postsynaptic density protein 95 (PSD95) and microtubule-associated protein-2 (MAP2), as well as upregulated transcription level of B cell leukemia/lymphoma 2 (Bcl2) in the cortex. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that MCH improves dyskinesia by reducing loss of synaptic proteins, indicating its potential as a therapeutic agent for AC infection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The objective was to assess whether low-protein (LP) diets regulate food intake (FI) and thermogenesis differently during thermoneutral (TN) and heat stress (HS) conditions. Two-hundred-day-old male broiler chicks were weight-matched and assigned to 36 pens with 5–6 chicks/pen. After 2 weeks of acclimation, birds were subjected into four groups (9 pens/group) including (1) a normal-protein diet under TN (ambient temperature), (2) an LP diet under TN, (3) a normal-protein diet under HS (35 °C for 7 h/day), and (4) an LP diet under HS, for 4 weeks. During HS, but not TN, LP tended to decrease FI, which might be associated with a lower mRNA abundance of duodenal ghrelin and higher GIP during HS. The LP group had a higher thermal radiation than NP under TN, but during HS, the LP group had a lower thermal radiation than NP. This was linked with higher a transcript of muscle β1AR and AMPKα1 during TN, but not HS. Further, LP increased the gene expression of COX IV during TN but reduced COX IV and the sirtuin 1 abundance during HS. The dietary protein content differentially impacted plasma metabolome during TN and HS with divergent changes in amino acids such as tyrosine and tryptophan. Compared to NP, LP had increased abundances of p_Tenericutes, c_Mollicutes, c_Mollicutes_RF9, and f_tachnospiraceae under HS. Overall, LP diets may mitigate the negative outcome of heat stress on the survivability of birds by reducing FI and heat production. The differential effect of an LP diet on energy balance during TN and HS is likely regulated by gut and skeletal muscle and alterations in plasma metabolites and cecal microbiota. The market for smart greenhouses has been valued at USD 1.77 billion in 2022 and is expected to grow to 3.39 billion by 2030. In order to make this more efficient, with the help of Internet of Things (IoT) technology, it is desired to eliminate the problem of traditional agriculture, which has poor monitoring and accuracy control of the parameters of a culture. Climate control decisions in a greenhouse are made based on parameter monitoring systems, which can be remotely controlled. Instead of this adjustment of the measured parameters, it would be preferable from the point of view of energy consumption that they should be calculated at optimal values from the design phase of the greenhouse. For this reason, it would be better to perform an energy simulation of the greenhouse first. For the study carried out in this work, a small greenhouse (mini-greenhouse) was built. It was equipped with an IoT sensor system, which measured indoor climate parameters and could send data to the cloud for future recording and processing. A simplified mathematical model of the heat balance was established, and the measured internal parameters of the mini-greenhouse were compared with those obtained from the simulation. After validating the mathematical model of the mini-greenhouse, this paper aimed to find the optimal position for placing a normal-sized greenhouse. For this, several possible locations and orientations of the greenhouse were compared by running the mathematical model, with which the most unfavorable positions could be eliminated. Then, some considerably cheaper "mini-greenhouses" were made and placed in the locations with the desired orientations. Using sensor systems and technologies similar to those presented in this work, the parameters from all mini-greenhouses can be monitored in real time. This real-time monitoring allows for the simultaneous analysis of all greenhouses, without the disadvantages of data collection directly in the field, with all data being recorded in the cloud and other IoT-specific advantages being made use of. In this paper, certain issues envisaged in the framework of development of design methodology for intelligent autonomous distributed hybrid power complexes (ADHPC) with green hydrogen and energy storage, functioning in grid mode and in the mode of interaction with the global (national) grid (GN) have been solved. Depending on their energy deficit or surplus, relative to the global grid, ADHPCs can operate as a load or as an energy source, respectively, as follows: based on the analysis of the energy balance management process in the ADHPC, a reasonable choice of the structure of the system of accumulation and distribution of power flows (SADCF) was made from the point of view of increasing the reliability of its functioning and ensuring the physical feasibility of the energy balance management process in this structure, i.e. keeping the actual power consumption of the consumers close to the required rated power at each given time t. This is achieved by including a condenser connected to the SADCF system on its assembly and distribution bus and a storage system BS with double-level ((BS1, BS2), double-circuit ((BS1(1), BS1(2)), (BS2(1), BS2(2))) structure, whereby: BS1of the level 1 - to manage the capacity balance in the SADCF under normal ADHPC regime and the variation of green hydrogen and consumption capacities within their confidence intervals assessed at the design stage; BS2 of the level 2 - to coordinate ADHPC and GN modes of operation and to control, together with BS1 of the level 1, GN, diesel generator (DG), the power balance in the SADCF when the ADHPC fails and when RES and consumption power are outside their confidence intervals; alternating charge/discharge operation of the parallel circuits will extend the life of the BS system; – a comprehensive definition of optimal ADHPC system situational energy balance management task is formulated. Hypothalamic obesity (HO) is a rare and complex disorder that confers substantial morbidity and excess mortality. HO is a unique subtype of obesity characterized by impairment in the key brain pathways that regulate energy intake and expenditure, autonomic nervous system function, and peripheral hormonal signalling. HO often occurs in the context of hypothalamic syndrome, a constellation of symptoms that follow from disruption of hypothalamic functions, for example, temperature regulation, sleep–wake circadian control, and energy balance. Genetic forms of HO, including the monogenic obesity syndromes, often impact central leptin–melanocortin pathways. Acquired forms of HO occur as a result of tumours impacting the hypothalamus, such as craniopharyngioma, surgery or radiation to treat those tumours, or other forms of hypothalamic damage, such as brain injury impacting the region. Risk for severe obesity following hypothalamic injury is increased with larger extent of hypothalamic damage or lesions that contain the medial and posterior hypothalamic nuclei that support melanocortin signalling pathways. Structural damage in these hypothalamic nuclei often leads to hyperphagia, central insulin and leptin resistance, decreased sympathetic activity, low energy expenditure, and increased energy storage in adipose tissue, the collective effect of which is rapid weight gain. Individuals with hyperphagia are perpetually hungry. They do not experience fullness at the end of a meal, nor do they feel satiated after meals, leading them to consume larger and more frequent meals. To date, most efforts to treat HO have been disappointing and met with limited, if any, long‐term success. Acute morning fasted exercise may create a greater negative 24-hr energy balance than the same exercise performed after a meal, but research exploring fasted evening exercise is limited. This study assessed the effects of 7-hr fasting before evening exercise on energy intake, metabolism, and performance. Sixteen healthy males and females (n = 8 each) completed two randomized, counterbalanced trials. Participants consumed a standardized breakfast (08:30) and lunch (11:30). Two hours before exercise (16:30), participants consumed a meal (543 ± 86 kcal; FED) or remained fasted (FAST). Exercise involved 30-min cycling (∼60% VO2peak) and a 15-min performance test (∼85% VO2peak; 18:30). Ad libitum energy intake was assessed 15 min postexercise. Subjective appetite was measured throughout. Energy intake was 99 ± 162 kcal greater postexercise (p <.05), but 443 ± 128 kcal lower over the day (p <.001) in FAST. Appetite was elevated between the preexercise meal and ad libitum meal in FAST (p <.001), with no further differences (p ≥.458). Fat oxidation was greater (+3.25 ± 1.99 g), and carbohydrate oxidation was lower (−9.16 ± 5.80 g) during exercise in FAST (p <.001). Exercise performance was 3.8% lower in FAST (153 ± 57 kJ vs. 159 ± 58 kJ, p <.05), with preexercise motivation, energy, readiness, and postexercise enjoyment also lower in FAST (p <.01). Fasted evening exercise reduced net energy intake and increased fat oxidation compared to exercise performed 2 hr after a meal. However, fasting also reduced voluntary performance, motivation, and exercise enjoyment. To address the emerging issues of water scarcity in a hydrological realm, estimation of evapotranspiration (ET) at spatiotemporal scale is essential. It is crucial for understanding climate change, particularly for Pakistan's ongoing water resource management policy under the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), where water is given top priority. In situ techniques can quantify ET, but with a small spatial footprint, it cannot accurately depict its regional distribution. Therefore, geospatial techniques and data, especially high resolution satellite imagery, estimate ET for large heterogeneous surfaces. The Surface Energy Balance Algorithm for Land (SEBAL) was employed in this study to estimate the spatiotemporal distribution of ET in various climatic zones of Pakistan using Landsat 8 images. A total of 48 satellite images were processed for six study sites (Skardu, Kalam, Peshawar, D.I. Khan, Quetta and Tando Jam) for the summer months from 2013 to 2020. Accuracy of SEBAL-based ET was evaluated with ground-based ET. The model performs well with daily rate of ET under southern desert hot climate of Tando Jam with highest pearson's correlation coefficient (r) of 0.89, lowest root mean squared difference (RMSD) and mean bias error (MBE) of 0.42 mm/day and 0.26 mm/day, respectively. The steppe-hot and extremely humid climate of Peshawar follow Tando Jam, with r value of 0.82, RMSD value of 0.76 mm/day, and MBE value of 0.40 mm/day. Central desert hot climate of Dera Ismail Khan (D.I. Khan) has the lowest (though still better) r value at 0.74, while the other two indices (RMSD and MBE) do not differ significantly from other sites. A high RMSD (0.84 mm/day) for the daily ET rate is recorded in Skardu's northern, cold, snowy climate; the rest of the indices are comparable to D.I. Khan region. In Kalam, the ET rate for various land uses was calculated and was found highest for snow cover (4.66 to 6.45 mm/day), followed by forest cover (3.69 to 5.79 mm/day), and open water body (3.25 to 5.25 mm/day). The SEBAL model exhibited tremendous potential to be applied under a range of climatic conditions in this study. Evapotranspiration can provide vital information for monitoring hydrological extremes (droughts and floods), environmental protection, planning climate-resilient agriculture, combating climate change, and sustainable management of water resources. The present work aims at investigating crack shielding and size effect related to a cracked slab under tensile loading. For this purpose, experimental tests are carried out on PMMA cracked samples. Three different geometries are taken into account, presenting one, two or three parallel edge cracks, and assuming their distance equal to their initial length. Results are interpreted through the coupled stress and energy criterion of Finite Fracture Mechanics (FFM). Cancer immunotherapies emerge as promising strategies for restricting tumour growth. The tumour microenvironment (TME) has a major impact on the anti-tumour immune response and on the efficacy of the immunotherapies. Recent studies have linked changes in the ambient temperature with particular immuno-metabolic reprogramming and anti-cancer immune response in laboratory animals. Here, we describe the energetic balance of the organism during change in temperature, and link this to the immune alterations that could be of relevance for cancer, as well as for other human diseases. We highlight the contribution of the gut microbiota in modifying this interaction. We describe the overall metabolic response and underlying mechanisms of tumourigenesis in mouse models at varying ambient temperatures and shed light on their potential importance in developing therapeutics against cancer. In this study, the authors present a theoretical analysis and experimentally verified methods to improve the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) of ships. The improvements were studied via the application of an innovative solution of a thruster supplied by a hybrid power system on board a passenger-car ferry. The authors performed sea trials of a ship's electrical power system supplied by battery packs with diesel generating set power units. The experimental study focused on energy balance and management, which were considered together with related power quality issues. The authors found that the application of an energy storage system to the ferry, such as batteries, with the simultaneous adaption of the operation modes of the electrical power system for current exploitation, significantly improved energy efficiency. Batteries are one of the most crucial energy storage devices today, and battery-energy management technology has an extremely significant impact on the performance and lifespan of batteries. The traditional design approach for battery-energy management platforms often neglects considerations for charging and discharging scenarios. Additionally, functional modules are designed independently, leading to incompatibility issues between hardware and control units, thereby limiting the system's performance. To address these challenges and enhance system coordination, this paper proposes a systematic design and implementation method for a battery-energy comprehensive management platform applied in charging and swapping scenarios. The method consists of four parts: hardware design, a dynamic load charging-balance control strategy, a composite micro-source hierarchical coordination control strategy, and a system emergency-response and protection strategy. The proposed method has been successfully applied to a design and has been used to build a battery-energy comprehensive management platform. Finally, through experiments, it has been demonstrated that this system can achieve energy scheduling, battery-energy balance, mode switching, and fault protection in a stable and reliable manner. This paper proposes a methodological way to compensate for the imbalance between energy generation and consumption using a battery block from electric vehicles as an energy reservoir through the well-known vehicle-to-grid system (V2G). This method is based on a simulation process developed by the authors that takes into consideration the daily fluctuations in energy consumption as well as the power level generated by an energy source, either conventional, renewable, or hybrid. This study shows that for very large electric vehicle fleets, the system is rendered non-viable, since the remaining energy in the battery block that allows the electric vehicle to be usable during the daytime avoids having to compensate for the energy grid imbalance, only allowing it to cover a percentage of the energy imbalance, which the proposed methodology may optimize. The analysis of the proposed methodology also shows the viability of the system when being applied to a small fleet of electric vehicles, not only compensating for the energy imbalance but also preserving the required energy in the battery of the electric vehicle to make it run. This method allows for predicting the optimum size of an electric vehicle battery, which depends on the energy generation level, coverage factor of the energy imbalance, and size of the electric vehicle fleet. Adenosine monophosphate‐activated protein kinase (AMPK) is a sensor of cellular energy changes and controls food intake. This study investigates the effect of a high‐calorie diet (high fat diet [HFD], high carbohydrate diet [HCD] and high energy diet [HED]) on appetite and central AMPK in blunt snout bream. In the present study, fish (average initial weight 45.84 ± 0.07 g) were fed the control, HFD, HCD and HED in four replicates for 12 weeks. At the end of the feeding trial, the result showed that body mass index, specific growth rate, feed efficiency ratio and feed intake were not affected (p > 0.05) by dietary treatment. However, fish fed the HFD obtained a significantly higher (p < 0.05) lipid productive value, lipid gain and lipid intake than those fed the control diet, but no significant difference was attributed to others. Also, a significantly higher (p < 0.05) energy intake content was found in fish‐fed HFD, HCD and HED than those given the control diet. Long‐term HFD and HCD feeding significantly increased (p < 0.05) plasma glucose, glycated serum protein, advanced glycation end product, insulin and leptin content levels than the control group. Moreover, a significantly lower (p < 0.05) complex 1, 2 and 3 content was found in fish‐fed HFD and HCD than in the control, but no differences (p > 0.05) were attributed to those in HED. Fish‐fed HED significantly upregulated (p < 0.05) hypothalamic ampα 1 and ampα 2 expression, whereas the opposite trend was observed in the hypothalamic mammalian target of rapamycin than those in HFD and HCD compared to the control. However, hypothalamic neuropeptide y, peroxisome proliferator‐activated receptor α (pparα), acetyl‐coa oxidase and carnitine palmitoyltransferase 1 were significantly upregulated (p < 0.05) in the HCD group, while the opposite was seen in cholecystokinin expression compared to those in the control group. Our findings indicated that the central AMPK signal pathway and appetite were modulated according to the diet's energy level to regulate nutritional status and maintain energy homoeostasis in fish. Indoor applications for perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have achieved high power efficiency, which has attracted significant interest in the field of internet of things. Currently, the energy of typical indoor lights (color temperatures of 2700 K/3500 K/5000 K, irradiance of 1000 lx) are concentrated in visible range of 400–700 nm, which matches the band gap of CsPbI2Br perovskite (1.86 eV, cut-off at 670 nm). On the other hand, the fragile property of organic transport layers is difficult to keep the long-term stability of PSCs. Summarized bottlenecks we have mentioned above, multiple inorganic hole transport material (HTM) candidates in models of PSCs was introduced to obtain the highest efficiency through optimizing inorganic geometries. The results showed that the device with Cu2O-HTM exhibits the best performance at three color temperatures, which was attributed to the minimization of the energy difference between Au/HTL/PSK. In addition, by optimizing the hole mobility and doping density of HTL, defect density of the HTL/PSK interface, thickness of the perovskite, doping density and total defect density of the perovskite, thickness of ETL, electron mobility and doping density of HTL, defect density of PSK/ETL interface, our simulation can achieve high efficiencies of 34.02%, 32.67% and 31.51% at three color temperatures of 1000 lx light (2700 K, 3500 K and 5000 K). Nervous system has distinct anisotropy and some intrinsic biophysical properties enable neurons present various firing modes in neural activities. In presence of realistic electromagnetic fields, non-uniform radiation activates these neurons with energy diversity. By using a feasible model, energy function is obtained to predict the growth of synaptic connections of these neurons. Distribution of average value of the Hamilton energy function vs. intensity of noisy disturbance can predict the occurrence of coherence resonance, which the neural activities show high regularity by applying noisy disturbance with moderate intensity. From physical viewpoint, the average energy value has similar role average power for the neuron. Non-uniform spatial disturbance is applied and energy is injected into the neural network, statistical synchronization factor is calculated to predict the network synchronization stability and wave propagation. The intensity for field coupling is adaptively controlled by energy diversity between adjacent neurons. Local energy balance will terminate further growth of the coupling intensity; otherwise, heterogeneity is formed in the network due to energy diversity. Furthermore, memristive channel current is introduced into the neuron model for perceiving the effect of electromagnetic induction and radiation, and a memristive neuron is obtained. The circuit implement of memristive circuit depends on the connection to a magnetic flux-controlled memristor into the mentioned neural circuit in an additive branch circuit. The connection and activation of this memristive neural network are controlled under external spatial electromagnetic radiation by capturing enough field energy. This work investigated the dynamic compression behavior of structural vinylester adhesive under dynamic compression tests using the Split Hopkinson Pressure Bars technique. The obtained results showed that the dynamic parameters were strain rate sensitive. No macroscopic damage was observed in the specimen at the different applied strain rates. However, the presence of a characteristic second peak mainly at high strain rates on the strain rate profiles was attributed to the plasticity occurrence in the polymer under impact. The non-linear response that appeared on the stress-strain curves of the adhesive had been attributed to the combined material softening and thermal softening. These results demonstrated that the studied adhesive could be considered a potential material for high-rate applications due to the combination of significant toughness with high strength and extensive plasticity. An energetic study determined the energy balance and quantified energy absorption. It was observed that used vinylester adhesive was suitable for dynamic applications because it could absorb a large amount of energy and undergo large compressive deformations without damage. This work provided a complete range of experimental data for structural adhesive, which could help the designer of an energy-absorbing adhesively bonded composite joint structure for high-strain rate applications. Summary: Image‐based high‐throughput phenotyping promises the rapid determination of functional traits in large plant populations. However, interpretation of some traits – such as those related to photosynthesis or transpiration rates – is only meaningful if the irradiance absorbed by the measured leaves is known, which can differ greatly between different parts of the same plant and within canopies. No feasible method currently exists to rapidly measure absorbed irradiance in three‐dimensional plants and canopies.We developed a method and protocols to derive absorbed irradiance at any visible part of a canopy with a thermal camera, by fitting a leaf energy balance model to transient changes in leaf temperature. Leaves were exposed to short light pulses (30 s) that were not long enough to trigger stomatal opening but strong enough to induce transient changes in leaf temperature that was proportional to the absorbed irradiance.The method was successfully validated against point measurements of absorbed irradiance in plant species with relatively simple architecture (sweet pepper, cucumber, tomato, and lettuce). Once calibrated, the model was used to produce absorbed irradiance maps from thermograms.Our method opens new avenues for the interpretation of plant responses derived from imaging techniques and can be adapted to existing high‐throughput phenotyping platforms. Hydrogen is a potential alternative fuel for combustion engines with its higher renewability, near zero emission, and excellent combustion performance. The direct-injection (DI) engine provides favorable brake thermal efficiency (BTE), less dependence on the hydrogen purity but sacrificing the production cost. This study explores both effects of turbocharging and DI on the energy and exergy balances, as well as the cost-effective analysis on a spark ignition engine. Results reveal the exergy efficiencies are related to the engine speeds and loads, while its maximum is 58.8% with 3500 rpm and 1.4 MPa of brake mean effective pressure. The DI system increases 2.6% maximum BTE from the port fuel injection. However, the exhaust energy proportions exceed 32.8% and 18.9% at the maximum power and BTE. An organic Rankine cycle is utilized to improve the exergy to the maximum of 58.9%. Introduction: It is unknown whether predetermined (un)interrupted sitting within a laboratory setting will induce compensatory changes in human behaviours (energy intake and physical activity) once people return to a free-living environment. The effects of breaking up prolonged sitting on cognition are also unclear. Methods: Twenty-four (male = 13) healthy participants [age 31 ± 8 y, BMI 22.7 ± 2.3 kg/m2 (mean ± SD)] completed 320 min mixed-feeding trials under prolonged sitting (SIT) or with 2 min walking at 6.4 km/h every 20 min (ACTIVE), in a randomised crossover design. Human behaviours were recorded post-trial under free-living conditions until midnight. Cognitive performance was evaluated before and immediately after SIT and ACTIVE trials. Self-perceived sensations (appetite, energy and mood) and finger prick blood glucose levels were collected at regular intervals throughout the trials. Results: There were no differences between trials in eating behaviour and spontaneous physical activity (both, p > 0.05) in free-living conditions, resulting in greater overall total step counts [11,680 (10740,12620) versus 6049 (4845,7253) steps] and physical activity energy expenditure (PAEE) over 24-h period in ACTIVE compared to SIT (all, p < 0.05). Greater self-perceived levels of energy and lower blood glucose iAUC were found in ACTIVE trial compared to SIT trial (both, p < 0.05). No differences were found in cognitive performance between trials (all, p > 0.05). Conclusion: Breaking up sitting does not elicit subsequent behavioural compensation, resulting in greater 24-h step counts and PAEE in healthy adults. Breaking up sitting reduces postprandial glucose concentrations and elicits greater self-perceived energy levels, but these positive effects do not acutely translate into improved cognitive function. One of the basic characteristics of Earth's modern climate is that the Northern Hemisphere (NH) is climatologically warmer than the Southern Hemisphere (SH). Here, model performances of this basic state are examined using simulation results from 26 CMIP6 models. Results show that the CMIP6 models underestimate the contrast in interhemispheric surface temperatures on average (0.8 K for CMIP6 mean versus 1.4 K for reanalysis data mean), and that there is a large intermodel spread, ranging from −0.7 K to 2.3 K. A box model energy budget analysis shows that the contrast in interhemispheric shortwave absorption at the top of the atmosphere, the contrast in interhemispheric greenhouse trapping, and the cross-equatorial northward ocean heat transport, are all underestimated in the multimodel mean. By examining the intermodel spread, we find intermodel biases can be tracked back to biases in midlatitude shortwave cloud forcing in AGCMs. Models with a weaker interhemispheric temperature contrast underestimate the shortwave cloud reflection in the SH but overestimate the shortwave cloud reflection in the NH, which are respectively due to underestimation of the cloud fraction over the SH extratropical ocean and overestimation of the cloud liquid water content over the NH extratropical continents. Models that underestimate the interhemispheric temperature contrast exhibit larger double ITCZ biases, characterized by excessive precipitation in the SH tropics. Although this intermodel spread does not account for the multimodel ensemble mean biases, it highlights that improving cloud simulation in AGCMs is essential for simulating the climate realistically in coupled models. The paper presents a critical analysis of a commercial pre-feasibility study for hydrogen generation from sewage sludge generated in a wastewater treatment plant sized Population Equivalent (PE) = 160,000 Three commercial offers based on hydrothermal carbonization, gasification/plasma gasification and gas separation, are analysed and validated in terms of chemical reactions and energy balance. The obtained hydrogen yield equals 10 kg H 2 /Mg sludge for Technology#2 and 5.5 kg H 2 /Mg sludge for Technology#3, while the process efficiency equals 31.4% and 41.2%, respectively. The offer for Technology#1 is inconsistent. The potential market can be built in the transport sector, based on buses (8–12/day) or locomotives (1–2/day) and complemented by passenger cars (16–22/day). Hydrogen surplus can be disposed into the natural gas network at a city gate station, with target concentration <2%. This article aims to present an overview of the participation of renewable energies in RN's electrical matrix, sharing quantitative data about generation projects, with an emphasis on renewable sources. This information can support academic research or studies associated with encouraging the use of renewable sources, characteristics that motivated and justified the option for this topic. The information gathering gathered and analyzed data relating to energy sources in RN made available by the SIGA/ANEEL platform. Regarding the results, maps, tables and graphs are presented, created using the Python language and Pandas and Plotly libraries, representing the quantities of projects in operation, construction and with authorization for construction classified according to multiple criteria, namely: source, powers granted and supervised, performance and location, among other specificities. The results, in a preliminary assessment, attest to the trend towards decarbonization, concluding that the Rio Grande do Norte matrix is increasingly renewable, as it mitigates the effects of environmental pollution. The active Brownian motion of single dust particles in a three-dimensional DC discharge trap under the action of laser radiation is experimentally studied. Spherical particles of melamine formaldehyde (MF), part of the surface of which had a copper coating (Janus particle) are used in the experiment. Two-dimensional and three-dimensional analysis methods for root-mean-square displacements are compared. The mean kinetic energy of motion of dust particles at different laser irradiation intensities is determined. In view of the growing scarcity of water for agriculture, the increase in food demand and future drought scenarios posed by climate change, it is essential to design new technologies that contribute to lower water consumption. In this research, high-resolution images have been used to estimate evapotranspiration in rice fields by applying the METRICTM (Mapping Evapotranspiration at High Resolution using Internalized Calibration) energy balance model. For this purpose, 5900 m² of crop were monitored under continuous flood irrigation (CF) and 2600 m² under alternate wetting and drying irrigation (AWD), in addition to some plots with lateral filtration. Ten flights were conducted between tillering and flowering phases, five flights with a Matrice 210 UAV equipped with a Parrot Sequoia multispectral camera, and five flights with a Matrice 300 RTK equipped with a H20T thermal camera. Field data were collected from vegetation indices (NDVI and LAI), and readings from a radiometer, to adjust information from multispectral and thermal images, respectively, and to obtain the components of the surface energy balance. Mean values for crop evapotranspiration (ETc) of 6.34 ± 1.49 and 5.84 ± 0.41 mm d-1 were obtained for IC irrigation and AWD irrigation, respectively, obtaining a water saving of 42% with a yield reduction of 14%, providing a guide for proper irrigation management, however, it is suggested to use the model to optimize yield by obtaining critical thresholds for optimal application of AWD in the face of water resource scarcity. The central tower solar receiver system is comprised of a number of small tracing mirrors that focus the beam radiation onto a huge tower in the centre. The tracing mirrors are placed as well as adjusted in such a manner that the light is always reflected at the top of the tower. The major goal of this study is to carry out a mathematical assessment of the central tower solar receiver where solar load calculation and heat transfer analysis has been carried out. Solar load is calculated for the location of Pune, India. Mathematical modelling is performed for the solar central receiver system Results of the mathematical modelling reveal that the estimated average sunshine hour for the year ranges from 10.9 hours in the month of December to 12.9 hours in the month of July. The maximum incident beam radiation of 1050.9 w/m2 has been estimated in the month of April at 1200 hour. After computing the variables, the matrix equation can be generated and the system can calculate the energy under the first-order differential equation. The BBSome, a complex of several Bardet-Biedl syndrome (BBS) proteins including BBS1, has emerged as a critical regulator of energy homeostasis. Although the BBSome is best known for its involvement in cilia trafficking, through a process that involve BBS3, it also regulates the localization of cell membrane receptors underlying metabolic regulation. Here, we show that inducible Bbs1 gene deletion selectively in proopiomelanocortin (POMC) neurons cause a gradual increase in body weight, which was associated with higher fat mass. In contrast, inducible deletion of Bbs3 gene in POMC neurons failed to affect body weight and adiposity. Interestingly, loss of BBS1 in POMC neurons led to glucose intolerance and insulin insensitivity, whereas BBS3 deficiency in these neurons is associated with slight impairment in glucose handling, but normal insulin sensitivity. BBS1 deficiency altered the plasma membrane localization of serotonin 5-HT2C receptor (5-HT2CR) and ciliary trafficking of neuropeptide Y2 receptor (NPY2R).In contrast, BBS3 deficiency, which disrupted the ciliary localization of the BBSome, did not interfere with plasma membrane expression of 5-HT2CR, but reduced the trafficking of NPY2R to cilia. We also show that deficiency in BBS1, but not BBS3, alters mitochondria dynamics and decreased total and phosphorylated levels of dynamin-like protein 1 (DRP1) protein. Importantly, rescuing DRP1 activity restored mitochondria dynamics and localization of 5-HT2CR and NPY2R in BBS1-deficient cells. The contrasting effects on energy and glucose homeostasis evoked by POMC neuron deletion of BBS1 versus BBS3 indicate that BBSome regulation of metabolism is not related to its ciliary function in these neurons. Accurately predicting weather and climate in cities is critical for safeguarding human health and strengthening urban resilience. Multimodel evaluations can lead to model improvements; however, there have been no major intercomparisons of urban‐focussed land surface models in over a decade. Here, in Phase 1 of the Urban‐PLUMBER project, we evaluate the ability of 30 land surface models to simulate surface energy fluxes critical to atmospheric meteorological and air quality simulations. We establish minimum and upper performance expectations for participating models using simple information‐limited models as benchmarks. Compared with the last major model intercomparison at the same site, we find broad improvement in the current cohort's predictions of short‐wave radiation, sensible and latent heat fluxes, but little or no improvement in long‐wave radiation and momentum fluxes. Models with a simple urban representation (e.g., 'slab' schemes) generally perform well, particularly when combined with sophisticated hydrological/vegetation models. Some mid‐complexity models (e.g., 'canyon' schemes) also perform well, indicating efforts to integrate vegetation and hydrology processes have paid dividends. The most complex models that resolve three‐dimensional interactions between buildings in general did not perform as well as other categories. However, these models also tended to have the simplest representations of hydrology and vegetation. Models without any urban representation (i.e., vegetation‐only land surface models) performed poorly for latent heat fluxes, and reasonably for other energy fluxes at this suburban site. Our analysis identified widespread human errors in initial submissions that substantially affected model performances. Although significant efforts are applied to correct these errors, we conclude that human factors are likely to influence results in this (or any) model intercomparison, particularly where participating scientists have varying experience and first languages. Urbanization has significant impacts on wildlife and ecosystems and acts as an environmental filter excluding certain species from local ecological communities. Specifically, it may be challenging for some animals to find enough food in urban environments to achieve a positive energy balance. Because urban environments favor small‐sized bats with low energy requirements, we hypothesized that common noctules (Nyctalus noctula) acquire food at a slower rate and rely less on conspecifics to find prey in urban than in rural environments due to a low food abundance and predictable distribution of insects in urban environments. To address this, we estimated prey sizes and measured prey capture rates, foraging efforts, and the presence of conspecifics during hunting of 22 common noctule bats equipped with sensor loggers in an urban and rural environment. Even though common noctule bats hunted similar‐sized prey in both environments, urban bats captured prey at a lower rate (mean: 2.4 vs. 6.3 prey attacks/min), and a lower total amount of prey (mean: 179 vs. 377 prey attacks/foraging bout) than conspecifics from rural environments. Consequently, the energy expended to capture prey was higher for common noctules in urban than in rural environments. In line with our prediction, urban bats relied less on group hunting, likely because group hunting was unnecessary in an environment where the spatial distribution of prey insects is predictable, for example, in parks or around floodlights. While acknowledging the limitations of a small sample size and low number of spatial replicates, our study suggests that scarce food resources may make urban habitats unfavorable for large bat species with higher energy requirements compared to smaller bat species. In conclusion, a lower food intake may displace larger species from urban areas making habitats with high insect biomass production key for protecting large bat species in urban environments. Vitamin B12 (VitB12) is a micronutrient and acts as a cofactor for fundamental biochemical reactions: the synthesis of succinyl-CoA from methylmalonyl-CoA and biotin, and the synthesis of methionine from folic acid and homocysteine. VitB12 deficiency can determine a wide range of diseases, including nervous system impairments. Although clinical evidence shows a direct role of VitB12 in neuronal homeostasis, the molecular mechanisms are yet to be characterized in depth. Earlier investigations focused on exploring the biochemical shifts resulting from a deficiency in the function of VitB12 as a coenzyme, while more recent studies propose a broader mechanism, encompassing changes at the molecular/cellular levels. Here, we explore existing study models employed to investigate the role of VitB12 in the nervous system, including the challenges inherent in replicating deficiency/supplementation in experimental settings. Moreover, we discuss the potential biochemical alterations and ensuing mechanisms that might be modified at the molecular/cellular level (such as epigenetic modifications or changes in lysosomal activity). We also address the role of VitB12 deficiency in initiating processes that contribute to nervous system deterioration, including ROS accumulation, inflammation, and demyelination. Dietary intake and physical activity impact performance and adaptation during training. The aims of this study were to compare energy and macronutrient intake during British Army Officer Cadet training with dietary guidelines and describe daily distribution of energy and macronutrient intake and estimated energy expenditure. Thirteen participants (seven women) were monitored during three discrete periods of military training for 9 days on-camp, 5 days of field exercise, and 9 days of a mixture of the two. Dietary intake was measured using researcher-led food weighing and food diaries, and energy expenditure was estimated from wrist-worn accelerometers. Energy intake was below guidelines for men (4,600 kcal/day) and women (3,500 kcal/day) during on-camp training (men = −16% and women = −9%), field exercise (men = −33% and women = −42%), and combined camp and field training (men and women both −34%). Carbohydrate intake of men and women were below guidelines (6 g·kg−1·day−1) during field exercise (men = −18% and women = −37%) and combined camp and field training (men = −33% and women = −39%), respectively. Protein intake was above guidelines (1.2 kcal·kg−1·day−1) for men and women during on-camp training (men = 48% and women = 39%) and was below guidelines during field exercise for women only (−27%). Energy and macronutrient intake during on-camp training centered around mealtimes with a discernible sleep/wake cycle for energy expenditure. During field exercise, energy and macronutrient intake were individually variable, and energy expenditure was high throughout the day and night. These findings could be used to inform evidenced-based interventions to change the amount and timing of energy and macronutrient intake around physical activity to optimize performance and adaptations during military training. Studies on the age characteristics of the quantitative and qualitative aspects of nutrition and energy of the midday gerbil in captivity showed that the consumption of various types of food ranges from 4.2 to of 7.5 g of dry matter per individual per day, depending on the age of the animals and the quality of the food offered. The absolute dry matter intake reaches the maximum at air humidity levels close to 50–55%. The absolute values of food consumption by adult animals are 1.3–1.5 times higher than those of young ones. The relative level (per 10 g of body weight) of food intake is 1.1–1.3 times, and the relative energy requirements are 1.2–1.5 times higher in young animals than in adults. Considering that the relative energy requirements of young gerbils are higher, while the absolute values of their nutrition are lower than those of adults, they need more nutritious foods in comparison with adults to ensure an energy balance. Consequently, in nature, young animals should be more demanding for food quality, and therefore, any changes in the quantity and quality of food resources will primarily affect the condition and survival of young individuals. The BBSome is a protein complex composed of eight Bardet-Biedl syndrome (BBS) proteins including BBS1. Humans and mice lacking a functional BBSome display obesity and type 2 diabetes, highlighting the importance of this protein complex for metabolic regulation. However, the contribution of the BBSome in insulin-sensitive tissues such as skeletal muscle and liver to metabolic regulation is ill-defined. Here, we show that disruption of the BBSome through Bbs1 gene deletion in the skeletal muscle had no effect on body weight or glucose handling, but improved insulin sensitivity of female mice without changing insulin receptor signaling. Interestingly, when fed an obesogenic diet, male mice lacking the Bbs1 gene in skeletal muscle exhibited heightened insulin sensitivity despite the comparable weight gain and glucose tolerance relative to controls. On the other hand, normal chow-fed mice missing the Bbs1 gene in hepatocytes displayed increased body weight, as well as impaired glucose handling and insulin sensitivity. This was associated with attenuated insulin signaling in liver and hepatocytes, but not skeletal muscle and white adipose tissue. Moreover, hepatocytes lacking the Bbs1 gene displayed significant reduction in plasma membrane insulin receptor levels due to the mitochondrial dysfunction evoked by loss of the BBSome. Together, these findings demonstrate that myocyte BBSome is minimally involved in metabolic regulation, whereas the hepatic BBSome plays a critical role in the control of energy homeostasis and insulin sensitivity through its requirement for insulin receptor trafficking. Modeling and simulation have become fundamental tools for the microclimatic analysis of greenhouses under various climatic conditions. These models allow precise control of the climate inside the structures and the optimization of their performance under any situation. In Colombia, the availability of energy balance models adapted to local greenhouses and their climate is limited, which affects the decision-making of both technical advisors and growers. This study focused on calibrating and evaluating a dynamic energy balance model to predict the thermal behavior of an innovative type of plastic-covered greenhouse designed for the Bogotá savanna. The selected model considers fundamental heat and mass transfer processes, incorporating parameters that depend on the architecture of the structure and local climatic conditions, making it suitable for protected agriculture in Colombia. The results of the post-calibration evaluation showed that the model is highly accurate, with a temperature prediction efficiency close to 86%. This ensures that the model can accurately predict the thermal behavior of the greenhouse being evaluated. It is important to note that the model can also anticipate phenomena characteristics of Colombian greenhouses, such as thermal inversion. High versus low aerobic capacity significantly impacts the risk for metabolic diseases. Rats selectively bred for high or low intrinsic aerobic capacity differently modify hepatic bile acid metabolism in response to high-fat diets (HFDs). Here we tested if a bile acid sequestrant would alter hepatic and whole body metabolism differently in rats with high and low aerobic capacity fed a 1-wk HFD. Male rats (8 mo of age) that were artificially selected to be high (HCR) and low-capacity runners (LCR) with divergent intrinsic aerobic capacities were transitioned from a low-fat diet (LFD, 10% fat) to an HFD (45% fat) with or without a bile acid sequestrant (BA-Seq, 2% cholestyramine resin) for 7 days while maintained in an indirect calorimetry system. HFD þ BA-Seq increased fecal excretion of lipids and bile acids and prevented weight and fat mass gain in both strains. Interestingly, HCR rats had increased adaptability to enhance fecal bile acid and lipid loss, resulting in more significant energy loss than their LCR counterpart. In addition, BA-Seq induced a greater expression of hepatic CYP7A1 gene expression, the rate-limiting enzyme of bile acid synthesis in HCR rats both on HFD and HFD þ BA-Seq diets. HCR displayed a more significant reduction of RQ in response to HFD than LCR, but HFD þ BA-Seq lowered RQ in both groups compared with HFD alone, demonstrating a pronounced impact on metabolic flexibility. In conclusion, BA-Seq provides uniform metabolic benefits for metabolic flexibility and adiposity, but rats with higher aerobic capacity display adaptability for hepatic bile acid metabolism. Directly measuring individual cow energy balance is not trivial. Other traits such as body condition score (BCS) and BCS change (ΔBCS) can, however, be used as an indicator of cow energy status. Body condition score is a metric used worldwide to estimate cow body reserves, but the estimation of ΔBCS was, until now, conditional on the availability of multiple BCS assessments. The aim of the present study was to estimate ΔBCS from milk mid-infrared (MIR) spectra and days in milk (DIM) in intensively fed dairy cows using statistical prediction methods. Daily BCS was interpolated from cubic splines fitted through the BCS records and daily ΔBCS was calculated from these splines. The ΔBCS records were merged with milk MIR spectra recorded on the same week. The dataset comprised 37,077 ΔBCS phenotypes across 9,403 lactations from 6,988 cows in 151 herds based in Quebec, Canada. Partial least squares regression (PLSR) and a neural network (NN) were then used to estimate ΔBCS from (1) MIR spectra only, (2) DIM only, or (3) MIR spectra and DIM together. The ΔBCS data in both the first 120 and 305 DIM of lactation were used to develop the estimates. Daily ΔBCS had a standard deviation of 4.40 × 10−3 BCS units in the 120-d dataset and of 3.63 × 10−3 BCS units in the 305-d dataset. A 4-fold cross-validation was used to calibrate and test the prediction equations. External validation was also conducted using more recent years of data. Irrespective of whether based on the first 120 or 305 DIM, or when MIR spectra only, DIM only or MIR spectra and DIM were jointly used as prediction variables, NN produced the lowest root mean square error (RMSE) of cross-validation (1.81 × 10−3 BCS units and 1.51 × 10−3 BCS units, respectively, using the 120-d and 305-d dataset). Relative to predictions for the entire 305 DIM, the RMSE of cross-validation was 15.4% and 1.5% lower in the first 120 DIM when using PLSR and NN, respectively. Predictions from DIM only were more accurate than those using just MIR spectra data but, irrespective of the dataset and of the prediction model used, combining DIM information with MIR spectral data as prediction variables reduced the RMSE compared with the inclusion of DIM alone, albeit the benefit was small (the RMSE from cross-validation reduced by up to 5.5% when DIM and spectral data were jointly used as model features instead of DIM only). However, when predicting extreme ΔBCS records, the MIR spectral data were more informative than DIM. Model performance when predicting ΔBCS records in future years was similar to that from cross-validation demonstrating the ability of MIR spectra of milk and DIM combined to estimate ΔBCS, particularly in early lactation. The melanocortin 4 receptor (MC4R) is a G protein‐coupled transporter that mediates the regulation of thyroid hormones and leptin on energy balance and food intake. However, the mechanisms of transcriptional regulation of Mc4r by thyroid hormone and leptin in fish have been rarely reported. The messenger RNA expression of Mc4r gene was significantly higher in brain than those in other tissues of mandarin fish. We analyzed the structure and function of a 2029 bp sequence of Mc4r promoter. Meanwhile, overexpression of NKX2.1 and incubation with leptin significantly increased Mc4r promoter activity, but triiodothyronine showed the opposite effect. In addition, mutations in the NKX2.1 binding site abolished not only the activation of Mc4r promoter activity by leptin but also the inhibitory effect of thyroid hormones on Mc4r promoter activity. The imbalance between energy intake and expenditure in an environment of continuous food availability can lead to metabolic disturbances in the body and increase the risk of obesity and a range of chronic noncommunicable diseases. Intermittent fasting (IF) is one of the most popular nonpharmacological interventions to combat obesity and chronic noncommunicable diseases. The 3 most widely studied IF regimens are alternate-day fasting, time-restricted feeding, and the 5:2 diet. In rodents, IF helps optimize energy metabolism, prevent obesity, promote brain health, improve immune and reproductive function, and delay aging. In humans, IF's benefits are relevant for the aging global population and for increasing human life expectancy. However, the optimal model of IF remains unclear. In this review, the possible mechanisms of IF are summarized and its possible drawbacks are discussed on the basis of the results of existing research, which provide a new idea for nonpharmaceutical dietary intervention of chronic noncommunicable diseases. Measuring energy balance and energy metabolism can provide crucial information for understanding the ecological and behavioral drivers of an animal's energetic and physiological condition. Both urinary C‐peptide (uCP) of insulin and urinary total triiodothyronine (uTT3) have been validated as noninvasive biomarkers of energy balance and metabolic activity in haplorrhine primates. This study attempts to validate uCP and uTT3 measures in strepsirrhines, a phylogenetically distinct primate clade, using the ruffed lemur (genus Varecia) as a model. We experimentally manipulated the diet of captive black‐and‐white (Varecia variegata) and red (Varecia rubra) ruffed lemurs at Duke Lemur Center across a 4‐week period. We collected urine samples from subjects (n = 5) each day during 1 week of control diet, 2 weeks of calorie‐restricted diet and 1 week of refeeding, designed to temporarily reduce energy balance and metabolism. We also tested the outcome of filter paper as a storage method by comparing to controls (frozen at −20°C) to assess its suitability for studies of wild populations. We successfully measured uCP and uTT3 levels in frozen urine samples using commercial enzyme immunoassay kits and found that both biomarkers were excreted at lower concentrations (C‐peptide: 1.35 ng/mL, 54% reduction; TT3: 1.5 ng/mL, 37.5% reduction) during calorie‐restricted periods compared to normal diet periods. Filter paper recovery for uCP was 19%, though values were significantly positively correlated with frozen control samples. uTT3 could not be recovered at measurable concentrations using filter paper. These methods enable noninvasive measurement of energetic conditions in wild strepsirrhines and subsequent assessment of relationships between energy balance and numerous socioecological drivers in primate populations. Microalgae are the promising source of products having a low and high economic value that include feedstock and vitamin supplements. Presently, their cultivation is being carried out by using sunlight in the open raceway ponds. However, this process has disadvantages like fluctuations in irradiance of the sunlight due to climatic changes and bad weather. Artificial lights, exploiting light-emitting diodes are beneficial in increasing the volumetric productivity of the microalgal biomass as it provides continuous illumination in the photobioreactors and assist in the external and internal design. However, the application of light-emitting diodes accrues high input costs. Though the cost of light-emitting diodes was estimated long ago, there is no recent economic analysis of the same. This study aims to enlist the applications of light-emitting diodes in microalgal cultivation with reference to internally illuminated photobioreactors coupled with the evaluation of the cost and energy balance of the artificial lights. The calculation shows that the electrical energy cost incurred during the application of light-emitting diodes for microalgae cultivation is approximately USD 15.19 kg−1 DW. The collective fraction of electrical energy transformed into chemical energy (microalgae biomass) is around 6–8%. The cost of the light-emitting diodes can be decreased by the application of an Arduino-based automated control system to control the power supply to LEDs, photovoltaic powered photobioreactors and additional light. These techniques of input cost reduction have also been explored deeply in the present study. As estimated, they can reduce the cost of light-emitting diodes by 50%.
