This article examines the nature of graffiti semiotics in the public space of Kosovo's capital Pristina. By adopting a perspective on graffiti as a historically situated and semiotic practice, we identify distinct ethno-political voices, each relying on highly multimodal-linguistic resources to convey their respective political messages to a wider audience. The corpus was gathered during a specific period in Kosovo's history (2013-2014) and as such allows us to capture the idiosyncratic nature of the encountered graffiti as a phenomenon which emerges as a non-transgressively emplaced and dynamically constructed medium allowing conflicting views on the political future of Kosovo to enter in dialogue with one another for everyone to see in the public heart of the capital. Moreover, the dynamic nature of graffiti inscriptions in the Kosovo capital makes it a conversationally layered, inherently heteroglossic speech act with several dissenting authors at work. Our fieldwork and analysis contribute not only to insights in the nature of graffiti as a political medium but also to our understanding of the phenomenology of ethno-political graffiti in Kosovo, the complexities of which can only be appreciated against the history of both the country as a contested geographical entity, and the Balkan region at large. With the rise in popularity of neurodiversity-affirming practices in occupational therapy, specifically with the autistic population, there is a need to establish a more robust theoretical underpinning for this work. A neurodiversity framework is different from the prevailing medical model that informs current practice in much of Westernized health care, and interested occupational therapists are now asking questions about how to apply it to their work. Occupational science is well-suited to generate research outside the medical model that can serve as a basic science foundation to inform practice. The purpose of this Opinions in the Profession paper is to suggest three needed areas of research in occupational science, to address occupational therapists' unanswered questions regarding (a) autistics' preferred methods of participation, (b) experiences of occupational injustice, and (c) the impact of autistic neurology on occupational engagement. These opinions are based on our experiences as both autistic and non-autistic occupational scientists and occupational therapists working with the autistic population. While these are not comprehensive, they serve as a starting point for identifying opportunities to move the profession toward neurodiversity-affirming standards of care. Black education has interrogated race, context, and power questions, yet these practices spanning geographies and learning contexts have not always been valued as spatial knowledge. Further, Black scholars have carved out spaces that honor the communal and spatial sensibilities of Black students, educators, and communities. Black geographies thought can help us reshape how we understand and interrogate issues within education and learning with attention to anti-blackness, futurities, imagining, placemaking, and efforts to create a sense of belonging despite perpetual unbelongingness in dominant educational and learning spaces. Thus, our piece engages with Black Geographies to emphasize the Black radical traditions of space and freedom-making to reorganize our approaches to pedagogy and storytelling. We engage what we call Black Spatial Storylines through our shared and individual stories. We present multiple vignettes and examples to model the ways Black Sound, particularly hip-hop, invites us to engage Black Spatial Storylines as both methodological and pedagogical techniques that start at Blackness. Not only do we highlight and use our own stories as examples, we detail how this process shifts our understanding of Black urban life, and allows us to reorient our educational praxis through Blackness. We conclude with suggested pathways for future applications of a Black geographies framework to education and learning, including the abundance that is the interweaving of Blackness. Thus, we hope to honor and uplift Black communities' spatial knowledge by formulating our foundational understandings of Black spatial knowledge and the role it plays in education and learning studies. Face-to-face participatory research and interaction is at the heart of empirical social research. The COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting physical distance restrictions had a significant impact on qualitative research. Instantly, conventional qualitative social science methods had to be adapted to 'remote' and digital modes of interaction. The focus of this article is to analyze how and why video-mediated formats such as online conference tools and online whiteboards affect personal interaction, cooperation, collaboration and data acquisition. In a retrospective process, we first inductively defined three characteristics of interaction, namely emplacement, communication and rapport. Conducting research about climate adaptation in coastal regions touches upon a sensitive and emotional topic. Emplacement is a decisive characteristic to understand how identities are built. The combination of verbal and non-verbal communication leads to contextualization, and building rapport is essential for trustful collaboration. To answer the question if video-mediated formats enable a replacement of face-to face formats, we deductively analyze the implications of video-mediated formats used in semi-structured interviews, qualitative social network analysis and focus groups on these characteristics. Our analysis reveals that video-mediated formats are sufficient to gather information but hamper crucial relational and trust-building processes. This implies that, by using video-mediated formats, the content level was hardly exceeded. Compared to face-to-face formats, non-verbal communication, emplacement and rapport are limited using digital formats, with problematic consequences for data generation and its understanding as well as for interaction in terms of trust, lasting relationships, knowledge generation and liability. This article illuminates the variegated possibilities arising from gentrification by analyzing it through the lens of emplacement. It asks how gentrification can be operationalized and managed in ways that intersect with but also supersede conventional modalities of gentrification-induced displacement, including opportunities for discordant spaces and peoples to articulate meaningful relationships with the city. Analyzing the microregeneration of Nantou Village, an urban village in Shenzhen, China, I show how state-sanctioned attempts to achieve sociospatial integration between village and city ultimately co-opt village and urban residents to coproduce gentrification-induced displacement but also provide an institutional platform for the articulation of alternative collective and individual forms of emplacement. Read from an emplacement perspective, microregeneration appears to be a half-victory. It provides some residents an opportunity to grow symbiotically with the gentrifying city and represents a conjunctural moment in Shenzhen and China's evolving approach to urban redevelopment. An emplacement perspective complicates the picture of perpetrators and victims in the process of urban redevelopment, contributing to a more pragmatic approach to researching and theorizing gentrification in urban geography. There is still confusion on what participant observation connotes and scholars call for more studies on researchers' roles and emotional reflexivity in tourism. This interdisciplinary research aims to unpack participant observations at festivals. Findings from literary festivals in Ireland and Italy suggest that participant observations are Holistic Research Experiences and are characterised by four elements. First, they go beyond the visual and the multisensory nature, to be holistic experiences. Second, fieldwork is emplaced since researchers are situated in the field and can feel bodily sensations and empathy, but are not fully immersed. Third, the researchers' participation continuum does not go from complete observer to complete participant, but it goes from passive to active involvement in the festival activities. Fourth, different passive/active, intentional/unintentional encounters can take place: human, animal, space, material, and immaterial. Finally, the paper considers future areas for research. This article explores de facto displacement and negative emplacement dynamics in the borderlands of the de facto state of Abkhazia. The uncertain status of de facto states creates a vulnerable, disenfranchised and rearranged post-conflict environment for ethnic minorities that are deemed unwanted remnants of the conflict. I make two arguments: First, de facto displacement is a situation of displacement where the displaced do not physically move away but where the landscape around them together with the sociopolitical situation significantly changes almost overnight. Second, that this displacement comes with negative emplacement in which a person and/or group is negatively set in place in a physical and social sense within the newly created reality of the de facto state. Divided by ethnic conflict, plagued by an economic crisis, and enforcing restrictive bordering practices at the edge of Europe, the Republic of Cyprus hardly constitutes an obvious choice for Nigerians fleeing conditions of state breakdown, crisis, and social immobility. The perceived 'unusualness' of this migration has made Nigerian and other African refugees particularly vulnerable to human rights abuses, violent nativist discourse, and racialised hyper-exploitation in the labour market. Yet despite these difficulties, some Nigerians strive to build a life on the island, with modest success. Based on ethnographic fieldwork, this article attempts to unravel the prevailing methodological nationalism, upon which notions of the 'unusualness' of African migration to the island are premised, in two ways. In contrast to notions of being itself a former colony, 'too small' to accommodate refugees, I show that colonial-era emigration to Africa has engendered anti-black racism in Cyprus, which has only been strengthened by EU membership and economic crisis. By focusing, on the other hand, on the city of Limassol as an ambivalent landscape of crisis and opportunity, I demonstrate how the urban rather than the national dimension can put notions of 'unusualness' into perspective. Within a global condition of crisis and social immobility, Nigerian refugees emplace themselves within the opportunities that Limassol, as a nodal point of social relations along multiple scales—national, regional, European, and global—has to offer. While this fact in itself does not improve their position vis-à-vis a restrictive asylum policy framework, it nonetheless renders them a constituent part of the city. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article examines Ukrainian students’ home-making at London’s multilingual and multicultural universities, contrasting the ways in which students’ idea of themselves and their sense of belonging developed after their arrival in London, and the ways in which this experience was altered by the outbreak of war on 24 February 2022. For international students in the UK, making themselves at home on a university campus is a relational process in which cultural, linguistic and political ideas and practices, brought together from the students’ former homes, are negotiated and transcended in newly established social networks. In this article, we explore the ways in which students’ networks, old and new, are altered as a result of their experience of war. Our findings indicate that when imagined personal life trajectories are disrupted as a result of the social and political crisis that accompanies the war, the possibilities of articulating the individual experience and the social interactions that provide such affordances are existential processes, which allow (or not) individuals to (re-)engage in home-making and to find new meaning in their emplacement and sense of self.

As aresponse to traditional (top‐down) urban planning processes, placemaking engages local citizens in the process of shaping the form, social activity, and meaning of places around them. However, placemaking practices similarly face political challenges regarding inclusion and emplacement. These challenges relate to who participates, facilitation through linguistic discourse, and place engagement itself. Attempting to address these challenges, this article (based on a pilot study) reports on the design and deployment of the StoryMapper, a traveling placemaking interface that uses a participant‐driven “chain of engagement” recruiting process to invite participants to create emplaced “morphings” (i.e., visually produced stories superimposed on public space) to spark dialogue on a digitally facilitated living map. This pilot study took place within a larger placemaking project that engages citizens to share their ideas regarding the reconversion of a community church. Plugging the Storymapper into this larger project, we discuss preliminary findings relating to the role of placemaking facilitators in citizen‐driven recruitment and the role of multimodality in placemaking processes. This pilot study suggests that inclusion should not only be evaluated based on who participates and who does not, but also on how the tool itself, in its capacity to engage participants to visualize complex emplaced ideas, may facilitate inclusion of different publics.

In this paper, we dig deeper into the reflexive learning that fuels collaborative inquiry by examining the unique ways in which changing itself takes place. We draw on two examples of collaborative inquiry, offering autoethnographic insights from our own lived experiences of changing change. These insights are underpinned by reflexive learning which we capture in textual form to show how learning in collaborative inquiry involves "impacting with" rather than "impacting on." Our analysis reveals that reflexivity is not a homogenous or static experience but consists of several dynamically changing entangled "dimensions" of practice. Through dimensions relating to the process, content, and impact of reflexive learning, collaborators can arrive at a "stance"—a fluid, loosely shared basis for action that enables organizational practices to be reconfigured or preserve key principles. Reablement aims to enable older persons with functional decline to re-engage in meaningful activities. The benefits of engagement in outdoor activities are significant; however, reablement services primarily target function in indoor environments whereas descriptions of outdoor activities are sparse. The aim of this study was to create a model that integrates outdoor recreation into reablement. We therefore elaborated on an experienced based co-design methodology to create a model that integrates outdoor recreation for older persons in reablement in an Arctic, rural context in northern Norway. Stakeholders (N = 35), including reablement participants, participated in workshops, focus groups, and individual interviews. Based on the results, we co-created a person-centred model for outdoor recreation in reablement, including an assessment tool that can guide reablement staff in goal-setting practices. Accordingly, we argue that cherished locations holds significant meaning in the lives of older people and warrant recognition in reablement programmes. Assyria's desire for global domination was marked by the empire's ideological conception of a "superior" center and an "inferior" periphery. The creation of the Neo-Assyrian provincial system during the 8th–7th centuries b.c.e. was intended to bring order and stability to a chaotic frontier and to create new realities for colonizers and colonized alike. Nevertheless, upon conquering new regions imperial ambitions were reined in by considerations of ecology, demographics, and politics. While the "colonial geography" of the Assyrian empire is often studied from textual, visual, and historical perspectives, it is also marked by distinct material culture expressions that are often explored from a technical point of view. Being one of the main foci of Assyrian imperial expansion, the southern Levant constitutes an ideal case study for investigating material culture manifestations of Assyrian imperial influence on conquered territories. An extensively explored site, the rich archaeological evidence from Tel Dan in the Hula Valley (Stratum Ib) provides a unique opportunity to explore imperial policies of deportation and resettlement in the face of geopolitical forces, as well as Assyrian impact on the everyday life of indigenous populations and recently arrived deportees. Mafic dykes are typically emplaced through primary hydraulic fracturing of undeformed crust or may make use of pre-existing crustal inhomogeneities, representing the plumbing systems of a large igneous province. The Eastern Dharwar Craton has dense exposures of several generations of Paleoproterozoic mafic dyke swarms ranging from ca. 2.37 Ga to ca. 1.79 Ga. Herein, using anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility fabric data of mafic dykes and associated host granites, the emplacement systematics of the NW- to W-trending ca. 2.21 Ga Anantapur–Kunigal dyke swarm, displaying a radiating geometry, have been studied to understand magma flow dynamics. A low-angle relationship between the silicate and opaque fabrics and good correlation with magnetic lineation, identified via petrographic studies and shape preferred orientation analyses of multiple oriented thin sections, suggest a primary flow-related magnetic anisotropy for the studied dyke samples. The classic subparallel relationship between the trend of the dyke planes and magnetic fabric of the associated host granites suggests that the radiating geometry of the ca. 2.21 Ga dyke swarm was supported by a favourable pre-existing structural grain of the country rock. We interpret the magma for the studied dyke swarm was fed laterally from a distant plume. It was emplaced as laterally propagating primary dyke fractures as well as injected into the pre-existing subparallel crustal inhomogeneities. Corroborating all these inferences, a detailed emplacement model for ca. 2.21 Ga Anantapur–Kunigal dyke swarm is also proposed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

By applying the sociological concept of 'emplacement', this article analyses the creation of the 'District of Mutual Respect' in the old, neglected part of Wrocław (former German Breslau), a city which became Polish and lost its German population due to their forced migration after the Second World War. The District has in the last 20 years been transformed from slum to attractive environment and an important symbol of Wrocław's new identity and image. The District showcases the local authorities' new politics of cultural heritage and memory that emphasises intercultural dialogue and multiculturalism after decades of nationalist memory narratives and suppression of the German heritage. The authors outline a 'biography' of the District and analyse its functions. Furthermore, they apply Knudsen's and Kølvraa's concepts of repression, removal, reframing and re-emergence to evaluate to what extent that the District can be seen as a largely successful example of creating cultural heritage for a more cosmopolitan, inclusive future. Places are key to our understanding of human mobilities and the other way around. Places and mobilities exist in a co-constitutive relationship, making it difficult to disentangle one from the other. Research across disciplines needs to pay more sustained attention to how places are mobile and to how mobilities are emplaced. It is crucial to undertake both endeavours simultaneously. Privileging the former, as happens in globalization studies, leads to de-essentialized conceptualizations of place, questioning the traditional taken-for-granted bond between peoples and territories, but it also creates a disconnect between high-level theory and lived experiences. Favouring the latter, on the contrary, as happens in more micro-scale and phenomenological approaches, leads to embodied understandings of human movement, but often overlooks the influential local-to-global power relations and structures that are implicated in local(ized) practices and processes. Based on a critical reading of existing scholarship and drawing on ethnographic and emic understandings of mobility-related issues in various contexts around the globe, this article develops conceptual as well as methodological insights about the multiple ways in which places are mobile and mobilities are emplaced. This includes anthropological reflections on displacement and immobilization. I end by offering suggestions for future transdisciplinary research on the place-mobility nexus. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Participation of Indigenous peoples and local communities is encouraged in calls for sustainable transitions and transformations. The term 'community' is widely used yet nebulously defined. Conservation that removes people from their communities of land invokes epistemological authority and displaced relationships. We relate our work to the articles in this special issue to rethink the relationship between humans and nature in conservation. We propose expanding the term 'local communities' to include more than just humans. This article reflects on teaching and learning practices in a second-year human geography module "Space, Place and Mobility in Southern Africa" to consider the role of pedagogies of emplacement in the teaching of mobilities. Reflecting on the use of student-developed mobile diaries and digital stories over a five-year period, this article builds on the concept of "emplacement" in teaching practices to demonstrate how actively emplacing students' everyday experience of mobility through reflective and embodied learning provides an opportunity for students to generate knowledge; to understand a range of mobility practices, spaces, and subjectivities; and more importantly, to illustrate the potential that epistemic disobedience may offer to mobilities pedagogy and theory. Background and objectives: As one of the most important systems of human life, the forest has an undeniable place in ensuring the well-being and comfort of humans. Based on the forest strategy of Global Bank, it is mentioned that More than 1.6 billion People in the world depend on the forest in various ways to provide their livelihood. A common political debate about development and the environment is that the poor are both the cause and the victim of environmental destruction. The interpretation of this narrative for the forest shows it shows that the reduction of poverty can reduce the pressure on forest resources and the preservation and development of forest resources can help reduce poverty. Accordingly, in this research, the condition of the forests of Shafarood watershed in Gilan province for The implementation of two income-generating activities of apiculture and aquaculture, in order to create economic prosperity for rural communities and other beneficiaries dependent on the forests of this area, and at the same time preserving these forests based on the prioritization of criteria and sub criteria. Materials and methods: Shafarood basin with an area of 36,657 hectares is located in the west of Gilan province, between the cities of Rezvanshahr and Pare-Sar and east of Talash highlands. In order to determine the appropriate economic use of rural communities in Shafarood forest and to identify the main criteria for each of the desired economic activities, observation, interview and questionnaire techniques were used from 55 experts which are selected randomly. In the current research, a questionnaire was used in three stages to complete the process, and the data obtained from the questionnaires related to criteria and sub-criteria were analyzed by the method of pairwise comparisons, which were use the GIS software in order to obtain the optimal spatial map of each economic activity. Results: According to the results, in the apiculture, the criteria of plant diversity, temperature, and the number of trees per hectare, and in the aquaculture, the criteria of distance from the river, distance from the spring, and temperature were recognized as the most important factors for the development of these chains. Based on the opinion of experts for apiculture, the sub-criteria of humid climate with a final score of 0.03 had the highest score while the high investment capacity and the distance from dirt roads, both with a final score of 0.24 0 were also important. For the aquaculture, humid climate sub-criteria with a final score of 0.03 was the most important and the high investment capacity with a final score of 0.029 and a distance of less than 500 meters from the river with a final score of 0.026 were in the second and third place. The results also showed that 22.13% of the entire area (8063.31 hectares) and 14.41% of the entire area (5249.9 hectares) can be used for apiculture and aquaculture, respectively. The results can be used for economic development in Shafarood forests. Conclusion: According to the findings of this research in relation to the effective criteria and also the rural population present in this watershed, a relatively suitable area for each economic activity is determined. Feminist researchers have long argued that refl exivity is key to a responsible research practice. As a method, reflexivity has the capacity to reveal power relations and highlight situated perspectives. Consequently, it has become a mainstream tool in qualitative research. Yet it has also been criticised for producing tick-the-box reflections and promoting a researcher-centric narrative that undermines participants’ contributions to knowledge production. This article takes a sensory approach to reflexivity and considers its methodological implications. Borrowing our interpretation of recognisability from Skeggs (1997), and that of emplacement from Pink’s (2015) conceptualisation of sensory ethnography, we use the compound concept of ‘recognisable emplacement’ as a reflexive theoretical lens with which to analyse the researcher-participant relationship. We are furthermore methodologically inspired by duo-ethnography in that we as co-authors create a collective and reflexive space for analysis. The analysis therefore enables us to illustrate the dynamic negotiations between participants, environment, and researcher, and to shed light on the sensory cues that form these negotiations. Based on an understanding of responsibility as a multifaceted and situated practice we suggest that a sensory approach to reflexivity increases the researcher’s capacity to take responsibility by foregrounding the intersubjectivity of researcher-participant relations.

The emplacement behaviors and the associated hazards of silicic lavas remain poorly understood because detailed real-time observations have only been made during a few modern eruptions. Therefore, we rely on older well-preserved glassy rhyolites like Banco Bonito and the VC-1 Rhyolite from the Valles caldera, New Mexico to constrain the emplacement behaviors of silicic lavas. Continuous whole cores, collected from both units during drilling in 1984 by the Continental Scientific Drilling Program, provide the unique opportunity to assess the rheological evolution of the interior of obsidian lavas. Banco Bonito is a large (0.9 km3; up to 150 m thick) obsidian lava coulée. The VC-1 Rhyolite is a relatively thin (~ 20 m) obsidian rhyolite that is not exposed at the surface and has an unclear emplacement history. Evidence for the emplacement dynamics of these two units is preserved as trends in volatile content and thermal history through the thicknesses of the rhyolite obsidians. We acquired 46 glassy samples from the VC-1 drill core through the entire thicknesses of both Banco Bonito and the VC-1 Rhyolite. We measured Archimedean densities, glass water concentrations using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and natural cooling rates using relaxation geospeedometry as a function of depth for both rhyolite obsidians. Systematic trends in both datasets provide evidence of the emplacement style of Banco Bonito and the VC-1 Rhyolite in the vicinity of the VC-1 drill hole. Total water contents range from 0.03 ± 0.01 up to 6.93 ± 1.09 wt. % for Banco Bonito, and range from 0.24 ± 0.06 to 1.08 ± 0.05 wt. % for the VC-1 Rhyolite. Both rhyolite obsidians display evidence of having been partially rehydrated. Cooling rates are fastest near the top and bottom of Banco Bonito (up to tens of °C s−1) and are slowest in the center of the flow (< 1 °C year−1). The VC-1 Rhyolite has fast cooling near the bottom of the flow (tens of °C s−1), but top and interior of the flow cooled slowly (< 1 °C year−1). We find that Banco Bonito was likely emplaced in an exogenous or "tank-tread" style because primary magmatic water (OH−) concentrations are at or below predicted solubility values for a given depth and eruption temperature, and measured cooling rates resemble values predicted by a conductive cooling model of a single flow unit. We estimate an emplacement timescale for Banco Bonito of < 3 months by combining a conductive cooling model, estimated glass transition temperatures using dissolved OH− concentrations, and a crustal thickness relationship used on active flows. We conclude that the VC-1 Rhyolite was likely emplaced as a lava that has been partially eroded based on stratigraphic evidence and the absence of fast cooling near the current top of the unit. The stratigraphic variation of plagioclase grain shape in the marginal regions of tabular bodies of magma provides a record of the balance of heat loss into the surroundings and heat brought into the body by magma flow during inflation and propagation. This record has the potential to constrain the amount of magma flow past any point in a sill, enabling mapping the construction of any extensive sill network. The variation of plagioclase grain shape in lava lakes may preserve a detailed history of lake filling, whereas the history of inflation of a thick ponded flood basalt flow is likely to be lost by melt-back of any early formed chill during prolonged flow at the base. Convection sufficiently vigorous to entrain crystals from the marginal solidification fronts is recorded by stratigraphic invariance of plagioclase grain shape and is not generally found in sills: instead, plagioclase grain shape varies with stratigraphic height, attesting to a predominance of in situ plagioclase nucleation and growth at the intrusion margins. While the stratigraphic variation of plagioclase grain shape in sills thinner than ~100 m is symmetrical, that in thicker sills varies in an asymmetric way with stratigraphic height, suggestive of a slower rate of inwards propagation of the roof solidification front compared to the floor, most likely indicative of moderately vigorous convection. Sills are generally finer grained than dykes of the same thickness, regardless of whether the spatial variation of plagioclase shape is consistent with convection during solidification: this is likely to be a consequence of a greater extent of Ostwald ripening of suspended grains during long-lived convection in vertically extensive dykes. This paper examines how, when and where personal names are produced as 'migrant names'. Drawing on 21 interviews with young Irish and Latvian migrants in the UK, I demonstrate how mundane stories, linguistic details, and repertoires about migrant names are embodied, mobile, relational, and produce everyday social distinctions. Empirical analysis unpacks changes in naming stories throughout participants' multiple migration trajectories in Ireland, Latvia, the UK and beyond. I argue for a geographically sensitive take on migrant names because they are produced as such through recognisable repertoires of displacement and then re-emplaced in certain spaces and times. The paper makes three main original contributions. The first is to interdisciplinary literatures on names, specifically on the significance of temporal and spatial contexts and the relationalities underpinning the production of migrant names. Second, it brings to geographies of identities novel understandings of ethnic and national power relations in naming practices, including an emphasis on the process of ambiguous whiteness. This article seeks to challenge Global North spatial imaginations of war as 'there' and peace as 'here'. It proposes this spatial rethinking against a background of migration being a defining feature of our time. Based on participant observation and an action research project, the article analyses embodied, emplaced encounters with violence and care that migrants experience in the Belgian capital Brussels. These encounters can be violent, but also productive of trust. The concepts of streams of violence and streams of peace are used to theorize these dynamics, thus reconfiguring understandings of where and when war and peace take place. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article explores the linguistic landscape (LL) of semi-informal markets in townships in the Tshwane (Pretoria) Metropolis in South Africa. Similar to other urban African markets, these LLs operate in a context of longstanding and ever-changing multilingualism and multiculturalism. Several indigenous and colonial South African languages are spoken in the area and many traders in the markets are immigrants from other African and South Asian countries. Despite this multilingualism, the public signage is dominated by English. The analysis draws on the semiotic reading of the LL by residents regarding the indexicality of traders' names. Local sign writers provide insight into their instrumental role in shaping the LL of these areas. Furthermore, we draw on the notions of emplacement, spatial scope, and assemblages of semiotics to discuss the significance of mobile phone numbers in unregulated, potentially high-risk activities. The Tarnagulla Granodiorite in the western Lachlan Fold Belt is poorly exposed; however, magnetic data reveal its distinct U shape (in plan view) and patterns characterised by multiple nested cusp-shaped anomalies of contrasting magnetic intensity. We interpret this magnetic response to reflect incremental assembly of the pluton above a persistent magma point source that migrated laterally. Here, we use potential field data, geophysical modelling and high-precision zircon U–Pb dating to constrain the shape of the intrusion at depth and deduce the migration path of the magmatism epicentre. Potential field profile modelling across three traverses, constrained by petrophysics, resolves the subsurface geometry of the Tarnagulla Granodiorite. In cross-section, the intrusion is funnel-shaped, with a lower boundary that varies from ∼2 km depth in the north to ∼6 km depth in the southwest, reaching a maximum depth of ∼8 km, which may coincide with a magma feeder zone. New precise U–Pb geochronology provides ages that confirm the interpreted magnetic phases were emplaced sequentially along a clockwise intrusion path that progressed stepwise from the north to the southwest between 406.62 ± 0.27 Ma and 399.3 ± 1.1 Ma. We attribute migration of the epicentre of magmatism within the Tarnagulla Granodiorite to syn-intrusion (Early Devonian) reactivations of the underlying Tarnagulla Fault, with relative displacements between the fault hanging wall (which hosts the pluton) and footwall (which we interpret to have hosted a persistent point-source magma feeder zone during pluton emplacement). Our model explains the intrusion's U-shaped magnetic response and reveals critical information about the paleo-stress and paleo-strain conditions during emplacement, characterised by three main displacement vectors and fault slip magnitudes. The geophysical characteristics, path of emplacement and mineralisation distribution all suggest that progressive fractional crystallisation contributed to the formation of an enriched final pulse of magma that resulted in Mo, Cu and W mineralisation hosted in the Moliagul Granodiorite. High-precision U–Pb zircon geochronology reveal that the Tarnagulla Granodiorite was emplaced along a clockwise pathway from the northeast to the southwest between 406.62 ± 0.27 Ma and 399.3 ± 1.1 Ma. Active faulting during pluton emplacement is the suggested explanation for the Tarnagulla Granodiorites' U-shaped magnetic response. Fractional crystallisation throughout pluton emplacement produced the varying internal geophysical response of the pluton as well as the enrichment of Mo and W at Mt Moliagul. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper highlights a methodological vagueness within the existing qualitative research interview literature related to reflecting where interviews takes place. The aim is to interrogate how the use of the concept of emplaced participation can account for the multisensory constitution of place within interviews as well as how the place can provide an opportunity to generate knowledge about participants' everyday practices. Casey's understanding of place as a gathering and Pink's perspectives on emplaced participation provide a sensitive epistemological approach that can be applied by researchers outside the field of ethnography. Based on empirical ethnographic material from fieldwork in Denmark, this paper makes a novel contribution to how researchers can use sensory and emplaced experience before and during an interview. We argue that, if we cease taking emplaced dimensions for granted, new methodological techniques can be developed, which, in turn, can lead to new types of knowledge of practice. The thirtieth anniversary of the publication of Crenshaw's (1989, 1991) seminal texts presents us with a commemorative moment for the concept of intersectionality and its journey within academia and beyond. I argue in this paper, that intersectionality can be and must be put to more imaginative use in spatio-temporal settings that are far-removed from its moment and place of inception. Through autoethnographic narratives I proposed in this paper, that i) as opposed to claims of overuse and loss of meaning, there remains untapped potential in the concept of intersectionality as a methodological device ii) that this device is particularly well-suited for scholars representing marginalized and minoritized social locations within the global academy and iii) a geographical approach of emplacement can serve to enrich intersectional analysis within feminist geography and beyond. The aim of this paper is to explore track cycling through visual and aural sensory modalities. We draw on Pink's work on emplacement and of the researcher serving an apprenticeship by engaging through first-hand experience and learning track practices and routines in which we reflected on our visual and aural senses to account for understanding the body and the transformations it undergoes when riding track. This speaks to Hockey and Allen-Collinson's call for a 'fleshy perspective' by reintroducing the body into sporting practice. Undertaking an auto-ethnographic method, we use diarised notes drawn from six track cycling sessions to account for sensory experiences by reflecting on aural and visual senses in the context of the skills we acquired during track sessions. In this, the emergent narrative situates the body as a place of contestation and transition, whereby our visual and aural modalities are the senses by which we narrate our improving aptitude, and attained physical capital, on the track. In India, where around 19,500 dialects are spoken, there is a great abundance of fiction quite rich in varied descriptions of old age and aging. While scholars like Pramod K. Nayar and Ira Raja have recently begun studying Indian literary texts written in English from the perspective of literary gerontology, those literary experiences of aging (which are originally in languages like Bengali, Tamil, Hindi, Oriya, etc.) are yet to be analyzed from a gerontological point of view. The present paper aims at studying the experiences of old age in 2 Indian short stories (one from Bengali Literature and another from Tamil Literature)—Bibhutibhusan Bandyopadhyay's "Drabomoyee Goes to Kashi" ("Drabomoyeer Kashibash" in Bengali) and T. Janakiraman's "The Puppet" ("Vilayattu Bommai" in Tamil). Regarding "Drabomoyee Goes to Kashi," the paper interrogates the problems in the emplacement of Hindu older widows to Kashi and explores the possibilities in Drabomoyee from ecofeminist and creatural perspectives. The discussions on "The Puppet" chiefly reflect on the social exclusion of the aging bodies of people living with dementia. Through the story of Venu, the paper shows that what the society or family generally expects from the older persons suffering from dementia may not do any good to them, and may instead lead to their institutionalization and other forms of exclusion. The purpose of this article is to examine the interconnections between embodiment and masculinity. Departing from the predominant discursive view of masculinity, I explain how a phenomenological, post-dualistic approach, inspired by Merleau-Ponty and Butler, can be mobilized to conceptualize masculinity as an embodied, performative accomplishment that reverberates around socio-material relations. Towards this end, this article traces the masculine regulation of the body schema as it develops in reciprocal relations between 'self-others-things'. Drawing from reflexive field notes and participant interviews, gathered over a 5-year period of observant participation with male motorcycle repairers, the article shows machinic masculinity as an embodied emplacement that is constituted by socio-material entanglements and performative enactments.
