On April 10, 2024, a stray dog was found in the city of Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil, with an extremely distended abdomen. Initially, pregnancy was suspected, but a more detailed analysis revealed the presence of mucopurulent function in the vulva, raising the suspicion of Open Pyometra. The chain was taken to the Veterinary Hospital of the Federal Rural University of Pernambuco, where it underwent an imaging exam that confirmed the diagnosis of Open Pyometra. After confirmation, the animal was sent to the surgery team. Analgesia and anesthesia were administered under the supervision of an anesthesiologist, and the dog was subsequently prepared for surgical intervention. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Nurses need not only practical knowledge to apply Advanced Life Support (ALS) but also theoretical knowledge. Objectives: To assess nurses' theoretical knowledge of ALS in the care of critically ill people and to examine the relationship between nurses' theoretical knowledge of ALS in the care of critically ill people and their sociodemographic, academic, and professional variables. Methodology: A quantitative and descriptive-correlational study was conducted on 36 nurses selected through non-probabilistic convenience sampling. Results: In the applied questionnaire, the nurses achieved a correct answer rate of 73.53%. Statistically significant differences were found between specialist nurses and their knowledge of emergency drug administration [amiodarone (t = 4.292; p = 0.038); and atropine (t = 4.912; p = 0.027)] and capnography monitoring (t = 4.788; p = 0.029). Conclusion: Nurses showed good levels of theoretical knowledge of ALS, and practical refresher training every 3 months is recommended. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study addresses the crucial role of nursing in emergency and disaster management, emphasizing the importance of preparedness, training, and effective communication. Through a qualitative literature review, existing literature was analyzed to understand the responsibilities and challenges of nurses in critical contexts. The findings highlight the need for specific disaster management training, including technical and nontechnical skills, and underscore effective communication as essential for a coordinated disaster response. The discussion integrates these results with previous studies, suggesting the implementation of structured training programs and the adoption of uniform policies to improve international disaster preparedness. In conclusion, disaster management preparedness and effective communication are critical for nurses to play a vital role in mitigating public health impacts of disasters, highlighting the importance of continuous learning and adaptation to meet future challenges in emergency care. Background: Nurses in emergency departments are at a high risk of experiencing secondary traumatic stress because of their frequent exposure to trauma patients and high-stress environments. Objective: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to determine the overall prevalence of secondary traumatic stress among emergency nurses and to identify the contributing factors. Method: We conducted a systematic search for cross-sectional studies in databases such as PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, CINAHL, Wanfang Database, and China National Knowledge Internet up to October 21, 2023. The Joanna Briggs Institute’s appraisal checklists for prevalence and analytical cross-sectional studies were used for quality assessment. Heterogeneity among studies was assessed using Cochrane’s Q test and the I 2 statistic. A random effects model was applied to estimate the pooled prevalence of secondary traumatic stress, and subgroup analyses were performed to explore sources of heterogeneity. Descriptive analysis summarized the associated factors. Results: Out of 345 articles retrieved, 14 met the inclusion criteria, with 11 reporting secondary traumatic stress prevalence. The pooled prevalence of secondary traumatic stress among emergency nurses was 65% (95% CI: 58%–73%). Subgroup analyses indicated the highest prevalence in Asia (74%, 95% CI: 72%–77%), followed by North America (59%, 95% CI: 49%– 72%) and Europe (53%, 95% CI: 29%–95%). Nine studies identified associated factors, including personal, work-related, and social factors. In the subgroup of divided by recruitment period, emergency department nurses in the COVID-19 outbreak period had a higher prevalence of secondary traumatic stress (70%, 95% CI: 62%–78%). Conclusions: Secondary traumatic stress prevalence is notably high among emergency department nurses, with significant regional variations and period differences. The factors affecting secondary traumatic stress also varied across studies. Future research should focus on improving research designs and sample sizes to pinpoint risk factors and develop prevention strategies [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Material e métodos: Revisão scoping segundo o protocolo do instituto Joanna Briggs, com frase de pesquisa "[(Trauma) OR (multiple trauma) OR (Spinal Cord Injuries) OR (Trauma, Nervous System)] AND [(Emergency Treatment) OR (Advanced Trauma Life Support Care) OR (First Aid) OR (Transportation of Patients) OR (Emergency Nursing) OR (Emergency Medical Services) OR (Emergency Medicine) OR (Emergency) OR (Emergency Responders) OR (Paramedics)] AND [(Immobilization) OR (Backboard) OR (Stability) OR (Board)]”.

The quality of the rice seed is a fundamental factor that must be considered in any agricultural production program. The objective was to evaluate the physiological quality of the seed of four new rice lines by descriptive and analytical methods, for which a completely randomized design with three repetitions was used and two trials were carried out, the first consisted of a standard germination test where the number of normal and abnormal seedlings, coleoptile and radicle length, and vigor index were determined. In the second trial, seed emergence counts were carried out for ten days and the emergence speed index, the total emergence percentage and the germination speed coefficient were determined. The results showed that Lines 3, 4 and INCA LP-5 were the genotypes with the best performance in the germination percentage; Line 2 and INCA LP-7 with the highest percentage of normal seedlings and the control INCA LP-5, followed by Line 2, with significant differences between them, the best in vigor index and radicle length. The control INCA LP-5 achieved 50 % of emerged seeds at 7 days and the rest of the genotypes accomplish to exceed that value between days 9 and 11. INCA LP-5 statistically surpassed all genotypes in the characters speed index emergence, emergence percentage and germination speed coefficient. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This monographic issue contains a long article bringing together the Lullius Lectures delivered by Professor Sandra Mitchell during the Xth Conference of the Society of Logic, Methodology, and Philosophy of Science in Spain, that took place in Salamanca (16-19 November, 2021). The publication of her Lectures is complemented by six original articles that address and examine different aspects of Sandra Mitchell's contributions to the philosophy of science. In this introduction to the monograph, the editors present the broad outlines of the Lullius Lectures given by Mitchell on the landscape of integrative pluralism. We accompany this overview with a review of some of the fundamental concepts of her philosophy as reviewed and discussed by the original articles included in the monograph on integrative pluralism (Deulofeu & Suárez, 2023; and Van Der Merwe, 2023), emergence (Onnis, 2023), scientific laws (Andersen, 2023; and Plutynski, 2023), and realism (Bertolaso & Sterpetti, 2023). DIVISION of labor , *ANT colonies , *OPEN clusters of stars , *PARTICLE decays , *FREE will & determinism , *MULTIPLICITY (Mathematics) - Abstract
Despite the common use of the concept of emergence, no uncontroversial theoretical framework has been yet formulated in this regard. In this paper, I examine what this circumstance suggests about the significance and usefulness of this concept. I first trace a brief history of the notion of emergence from its first formulation among the British Emergentists to its contemporary uses. Then, I outline its most common features and examine three examples of emergent phenomena, namely particle decay, free will, and division of labour in ant colonies. These three cases of emergence exhibit different features and imply criteria which only partially overlap. I then suggest that the multiplicity of features and criteria recognised as defining emergence, rather than being a threat to the tenability of the concept, should encourage the assumption of a pluralist attitude that is consistent with both the employment of this idea in different sciences and the recognition of emergent phenomena across different levels of organisation. Finally, I propose that emergence can be approached in a similar way to how Richard Boyd approached the problem of natural kinds, namely by identifying an open cluster of properties, rather than a set of necessary and sufficient conditions. In this essay, I revisit and extend my arguments for a view of science that is pluralistic, perspectival and pragmatist. I attempt to resolve mismatches between metaphysical assumptions, epistemological desiderata, and scientific practice. I consider long-held views about unity of science and reduc-tionism, emergent properties and physicalism, exceptionless necessity in explanatory laws, and in the justification for realism. My solutions appeal to the partiality of representation, the perspectivism of theories and data, and the interactive co-construction of warranted claims for realism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Although congenital tracheal anomalies are not very common in veterinary medicine, they are still very important. Just as happens in human medicine, most possible variants are of very striking clinical presentation, due to the respiratory distress produced in patients. All require some type of surgical or minimally invasive correction in order to overcome the acute condition. Below is the case of a 10-month-old male feline that attended the emergency ward with acute inspiratory and expiratory dyspnea, who particularly presented marked inspiratory stridor. As a result of the patient's decease and subsequent necropsy and histopathology it was concluded that he presented segmental congenital tracheal stenosis due to absence of tracheal rings. Based on the intense demands of caring for others, present in the context of hospital urgency and emergency, this paper explores the work practice of care that physicians perform in this situation. The reflection has the ethics of care in Psychoanalysis as a guiding axis, which matches up with the goal of humanizing care, currently in force in the National Policy for Humanization. It presents the narratives of four resident physicians as witnesses of the undeniable subjective effects undergone in these professional experiences. It concludes that it is essential to implement public policies and institutional actions that take into account the effective caring for the caregiver, thus establishing the validity of another logic not restricted to technical performance. PLANT phenology , *WEATHER , *SPRING , *GROWING season , *SEED development , *FIELD research , *SEED industry - Abstract
An understanding of phenology and reproductive ability of a weed species can provide valuable information to manage it incisively. Field studies were conducted in North of Iran, in 2020 and 2021 to evaluate the influence of weather variability on phenological response patterns and production ability of black bindweed. In six sowing dates from October to March, the required thermal time, development rate and seed production ability for each phenophases across different sowing date (SD) were recorded. Among the six sowing dates, the late-autumn SD had the highest emergence and development rate. Sowing dates had significant (p < 0.005) effect on the timing of key phenophases, and more importantly on the period each phenological growth stage spent. The estimated seed production of this weed upon to SD varied from 1,200 to 15,000 seeds per plant. Based on the result black bindweed can be a prevalent weed in a wide range of growing season. Also, late winter and early spring can be mentioned as a vital time to manage and deplete seed bank. The results of current study could help construct a basic framework for a variety of weed-management tactics for conserving the ecosystems and biodiversity on which we depend. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

EMERGENCY medical services , *LITERATURE reviews , *HEALTH care teams , *HOSPITAL emergency services , *ELECTRONIC information resource searching - Abstract
Brazil presents in its territory an estimated 1,000,000 occurrences of accidents due to burns per year, and of these cases, only 100,000 are referred to hospital help and approximately 2,500 die due to direct or indirect complications of burns. Mortality from burns increases when other organic structures are compromised. This work aims to carry out a narrative review of the literature regarding the approach and initial assessment of severely burned patients in the hospital emergency department. An electronic search was performed for articles published in journals indexed through the PubMed, ScienceDirect and BVS Saúde databases, using the following combination of descriptors verified in the DeCS/MeSH database: 'emergency medical services' AND 'burn injury' AND 'evaluation'. Studies published between January 2017 and October 2022 were admitted. The observation of the hemodynamic state, the rapid assertive assessment of the degree of impairment and the management of the multidisciplinary health team are fundamental aspects for the improvement of the patient's condition.
