This report is the result of the collaboration and research effort of the Quarkonium Working Group over the last three years. It provides a comprehensive overview of the state of the art in heavy-quarkonium theory and experiment, covering quarkonium spectroscopy, decay, and production, the determination of QCD parameters from quarkonium observables, quarkonia in media, and the effects on quarkonia of physics beyond the Standard Model. An introduction to common theoretical and experimental tools is included. Future opportunities for research in quarkonium physics are also discussed., Comment: xviii + 487 pages, 260 figures. Physical review / D 72(5), 059902 (2005). doi:10.1103/PhysRevD.72.059902, We investigate the role of exclusive channels in semi-inclusive electroproduction of pions and kaons. Using the QCD factorization theorem for hard exclusive processes we evaluate the cross sections for exclusive pseudoscalar and vector meson production in terms of generalized parton distributions and meson distribution amplitudes. We investigate the uncertainties arising from the modeling of the nonperturbative input quantities. Combining these results with available experimental data, we compare the cross sections for exclusive channels to that obtained from quark fragmentation in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering. We find that rho^0 production is the only exclusive channel with significant contributions to semi-inclusive pion production at large z and moderate Q^2. The corresponding contribution to kaon production from the decay of exclusively produced phi and K^* is rather small., Published by Inst., Woodbury, NY

Physical review / D 70(9), 094035 (2004). doi:10.1103/PhysRevD.70.094035, We study the photoproduction of a D^{*+-} meson in association with a hadron jet at next-to-leading order in the parton model of QCD with non-perturbative fragmentation functions extracted from LEP1 data of e^+e^- annihilation. The transverse-momentum and rapidity distributions recently measured at DESY HERA in various kinematic ranges nicely agree with our theoretical predictions. This provides a useful test of the universality and the scaling violations of the fragmentation functions predicted by the factorization theorem. These comparisons also illustrate the significance of the charm component in the resolved photon. This is elaborated by investigating the cross-section distributions in x_obs^gamma and cos(theta^*)., Published by Inst., Woodbury, NY

9 pp. (2001)., In the framework of the semihard ($k_T$ factorization) QCD approach, we consider the photoproduction of D* mesons associated with two hadron jets and the D* production in DIS at THERA conditions with the emphasis on the BFKL and CCFM dynamics of gluon distributions. In the photoproduction of D* mesons the attention is focused on the variable $x_\gamma$, which is the fraction of the photon momentum contributed to a pair of jets with largest $p_T$. We show that our theoretical results are sensitive to the BFKL type dynamics which may be investigated at THERA energies. We also discuss possible effect of $\J/\psi$ meson spin alignement, which is thought to be a vivid manifestation of gluon off-shellness.

Physical review / D 56(5), 2702 - 2712 (1997). doi:10.1103/PhysRevD.56.2702, We have calculated jet shapes in low $Q^2$ $ep$ and $p\overline{p}$ collisions in perturbation theory at order $\alpha_s^3$ for the hard parton-parton processes. For the $\gamma p$ process resolved and direct contributions are superimposed. The dependence of the jet shapes on transverse energy, rapidity, and inner cone extension is studied. The numerical results of the calculation are compared with recent data from ZEUS at HERA and from CDF and D0 at the TEVATRON. Good agreement is achieved if the problem of merging overlapping jets is taken into account by varying the parameter $R_{sep}$ as a function of transverse energy and rapidity., Published by Inst., Woodbury, NY

Physical review letters 76(22), 4128 - 4131 (1996). doi:10.1103/PhysRevLett.76.4128, We have calculated the leading color-octet contributions to the production of $J/\psi$ particles in photon-proton collisions. Using the values for the color-octet matrix elements extracted from fits to prompt $J/\psi$ data at the Tevatron, we demonstrate that distinctive color-octet signatures should be visible in $J/\psi$ photoproduction. However, these predictions appear at variance with recent experimental data obtained at HERA, indicating that the phenomenological importance of the color-octet contributions is smaller than expected from theoretical considerations and suggested by the Tevatron fits., Published by APS, College Park, Md.

42 pp. (1996)., We present a complete calculation of the higher-order perturbative QCD corrections to inelastic photoproduction of J / ψ particles. A comprehensive analysis of total cross sections and differential distributions for the energy range of the fixed-target experiments and for inelastic J/ψ photoproduction at HERA is performed. The cross section and the J / ψ energy spectrum are compared wth the available photoproduction data including first results from HERA. This analysis will not only provide information on the gluon distribution of the proton but appears to be a clean test for the underlying picture of quarkonium production as developed so far in the perturbative QCD sector.

34 pp. (1996)., A measurement of inclusive charged particle distributions in deep inelastic $ep$ scattering for $\gamma~* p$ centre-of-mass energies $75< W < 175$GeV and momentum transfer squared $10< Q~2 < 160$GeV$~2$ from the ZEUS detector at HERA is presented. The differential charged particle rates in the $\gamma~* p$ centre-of-mass system as a function of the scaled longitudinal momentum, $x_F$, and of the transverse momentum, $p_t~*$ and $\,\,$ , as a function of $x_F$, $W$ and $Q~2$ are given. Separate distributions are shown for events with (LRG) and without (NRG) a rapidity gap with respect to the proton direction. The data are compared with results from experiments at lower beam energies, with the naive quark parton model and with parton models including perturbative QCD corrections. The comparison shows the importance of the higher order QCD processes. Significant differences of the inclusive charged particle rates between NRG and LRG events at the same $W$ are observed. The value of $\,\,$ for LRG events with a hadronic mass $M_X$, which excludes the forward produced baryonic system, is similar to the $\,\,$ value observed in fixed target experiments at $W \approx M_X$.

11 pp. (1995)., The next-to-leading order inclusive cross section for large- p ⊥ photoproduction of charm quarks at HERA is calculated in two different approaches. In the first approach the charm quarks are treated as massive objects which are strictly external to the proton and the photon while in the second approach the charm mass is neglected and the c quark is assumed to be one of the active flavours in the proton and photon structure functions. We present single-inclusive distributions in transverse momentum and rapidity including direct and resolved photons. The cross section in the massless approach is found to be significantly larger than in the massive scheme. The deviation originates from several contributions which are disentangled. We argue that large- p ⊥ photoproduction of charm quarks at HERA will be sensitive to the charm content of the photon structure function.

16 pp. (1995)., We present an experimental study of theep→eγ+p andep→eγ+X processes using data recorded by the H1 detector in 1993 at the electron-proton collider HERA. These processes are employed to measure the luminosity with an accuracy of 4.5 %. A subsample of theep→eγ+X events in which the hard photon is detected at angles θγ′ ≤ 0.45 mrad with respect to the incident electron direction is used to verify experimentally the size of radiative corrections to theep→eX inclusive cross section and to investigate the structure of the proton in theQ2 domain down to 2 GeV2, lower than previously attained at HERA.

We investigate in detail the effect of a direct pomeron coupling to quarks on the production of jets in $ep$ scattering with almost real photons. Jet production via a direct pomeron coupling is compared with the resolved--pomeron mechanism. We consider both direct and resolved photoproduction. Rapidity and transverse momentum distributions are calculated and compared with preliminary H1 and ZEUS data.

13 pp. (1994)., We present a study of J ψ meson production in collisions of 26.7 GeV electrons with 820 GeV protons, performed with the H1-detector at the HERA collider at DESY. The J ψ mesons are detected via their leptonic decays both to electrons and muons. Requiring exactly two particles in the detector, a cross section of σ(ep → J ψ X) = (8.8±2.0±2.2) nb is determined for 30 GeV ≤ W γp ≤ 180 GeV and Q 2 ≲ 4 GeV 2 . Using the flux of quasi-real photons with Q 2 ≲ 4 GeV 2 , a total production cross section of σ ( γp → J / ψX ) = (56±13±14) nb is derived at an average W γp =90 GeV. The distribution of the squared momentum transfer t from the proton to the J ψ can be fitted using an exponential exp(− b ∥ t ∥) below a ∥ t ∥ of 0.75 GeV 2 yielding a slope parameter of b = (4.7±1.9) GeV −2 .

78 pp. (1993)., The authors review and update results bearing on the phenomenon of particle-antiparticle mixing in the neutral beauty meson sector. Their main focus is on the mixing ratio xs, defined as xs=( Delta M)/ Gamma , relevant for Bs0-Bs0 mixing. They present theoretical estimates of this quantity in the standard model (SM) and find that xs=O(10), which makes time-dependent oscillation measurements mandatory. They also discuss estimates of xs in a number of extensions of the SM, some of which admit smaller values of xs. Present and future experimental facilities where such measurements can be undertaken are reviewed on a case-to-case basis. These include the high luminosity LEP option, asymmetric threshold B-factories, the ep collider HERA, and hadron colliders, such as the Fermilab Tevatron, LHC and SSC.

9 pp. (1993)., For the study of deep inelastic scattering at HERA, the use of Jaquet-Blondel variables is advantageous in several respects. We calculate the complete leptonic O (α) QED corrections for the reaction ep → eX in these variables. All but one phase space integrations are performed analytically. After exponentiation of soft photon corrections, an accuracy of at least 1% is matched. Numerical results are presented and compared to estimates based on the leading logarithmic approximation.

14 pp. (1993)., A direct search for new particles in the H1 experiment at HERA is presented for masses ranging from 35 GeV up to ∼ 250 GeV. The data sample of 24 nb−1 accumulated during the first year of operation was analysed for signatures of scalar and vector leptoquarks, leptogluons, excited electrons and excited neutrinos with flavours of the first generation. No evidence for the production of such particles was found in various possible decay channels. Rejection limits are derived.

(1982). doi:10.1103/PhysRevD.25.634, Cross sections for ρ0 electroproduction measured in a streamer-chamber experiment are separated into elastic (ep→epρ0) and inelastic production channels. For the elastic channel, the total cross section and t dependence are presented. For the inelastic channel (1σ)dσdz, (1σ)dσdpT2, and a density matrix element are shown and compared to quark-parton-model predictions. The ratio of ρ0 to direct π0 production is found to be 2.0±0.5±0.3, where the first error is statistical, and the second error is systematic.

(1978). doi:10.1016/0370-2693(78)90073-4, We have calculated charm pair production in ν μ N collisions using quantum chromodynamics (QCD). The resulting trimuon rate turns out to be small at present energies: σ(3μ) σ(1μ)≲10 −6 at E ν = 200 GeV for α s = 0.2. (However, this process may be measurable at the high energies attainable with colliding beam ep machines.) We emphasize the general importance of looking for inclusive J Ψ or the bound states of heavier flavors in deep inelastic reactions, as a signal for the pair production of heavy quarks.

12 pp. (1974)., In the framework of Feynman's quark--parton model for inclusive electroproduction and quark model of Ezawa, Maharana and Miyazawa for hadronic inclusive processes, relations between invariant cross sections for electroproduction of pions and purely hadronic production of pions in the beam fragmentation regions are derived. They are satisfied by data. The ratio of parton fragmentation functions $\eta=D^{\pi+}_u(z)/D^{\pi+}_d(z)$ is estimated from purely hadronic processes independently from the parton model.

(1978). doi:10.1016/0550-3213(78)90167-0, Electroproduction of hadrons is studied in the kinematic region W < 2.8 GeV and 0.3 < Q 2 < 1.4 GeV 2 using the DESY streamer chamber. Prong cross sections, charged-particle multiplicities and inclusive π − distributions are presented. The average charged multiplicity is found to be independent of Q 2 in the Q 2 range studied here; however it is lower than in photoproduction. The fraction of forward π − is found to be significantly less in electroproduction than in photoproduction. The 〈 p ⊥ 2 〉 for inclusive π − is, for all x values, similar to that found in photoproduction.

(1978). doi:10.1016/0550-3213(78)90128-1, We have measured the inclusive electroproduction of positive and negative hadrons in the quark fragmentation region using the streamer chamber at DESY. Data are presented in terms of the variable z p = p / v in the kinematic region 1.8 < W < 2.8 GeV and 0.3 < Q 2 < 1.4 GeV 2 . The positive hadron distributions contain a strong proton component. After subtraction of the proton component and elastic rho events, the distribution (1/ σ tot ) d σ /d z p for positive and negative hadrons agrees well with the corresponding distribution from e + e − annihilation (DORIS data). This behaviour supports the validity of the quark-parton model at surprisingly low Q 2 and W .

Physical review letters 40(25), 1614 - 1617 (1978). doi:10.1103/PhysRevLett.40.1614, Cross sections for inclusive electroproduction of Ks0's and Λ's have been measured. The Ks0 results are combined with data from electron-positron annihilation and charged K electroproduction to give information on quark fragmentation into strange particles. The longitudinal- and transverse-momentum distributions for Λ's are compared with those of electroproduced protons., Published by APS, College Park, Md.
