Predictions of the scrape‐off layer (SOL) plasma conditions from the 2D multi‐fluid code EDGE2D‐EIRENE are compared to the OEDGE 1D fluid code for JET low‐confinement mode (L‐mode) plasmas. In the low‐recycling divertor conditions (divertor target plasma collisionality νe≈30$$ {\nu}_e\approx 30 $$), OEDGE and EDGE2D‐EIRENE agree on the electron temperature, the ion temperature, and the electron density within 10% in the low‐field side (LFS) divertor X‐point region (divertor SOL) and within 25% in the LFS midplane region. In high‐recycling conditions (νe≈55,000$$ {\nu}_e\approx 55,000 $$), the predictions of both codes agree on the electron temperature within 20%, while differences in the ion temperature and electron density increase to as high as 50% in the divertor SOL. Reactor relevant fusion devices will use tungsten (W) for their plasma facing components (PFCs) due to its thermomechanical properties and low tritium retention. However, W introduces high-Z impurities into the plasma, degrading its performance. Different wall conditioning methods have been developed to address this issue, including coating of W PFCs with layers of low-Z material. Wall conditioning by boron (B) powder injection using an impurity powder dropper (IPD) is being studied in WEST. Two series of experiments were conducted since the installation of the new ITER grade full W divertor. During the first series in 2023 ∼ 1 g of B powder was injected in total at a maximum rate of ∼ 58 mg/s, both of which are three times greater than respective values in the initial WEST powder injection experiments. The second series of experiments included injection of B and BN powders for comparison of their effects on plasma performance. The presence of an instantaneous conditioning effect is suggested by visible spectroscopy measurements of low-Z impurity lines and a rollover of total radiated power past an injection rate of ∼ 20 mg/s was observed. Presence of B coating layer formation is supported by the evolution of the average radiance of visible lines of B, W and oxygen (O). To understand B transport, an interpretative modeling workflow is employed, utilizing the SOLEDGE-EIRENE fluid boundary plasma code and the Dust Injection Simulator (DIS) code. Parameters like B perpendicular diffusivity and recycling coefficients are varied to match experimental results to see if the initial assumption of B sticking to the PFCs immediately after the contact with the wall is adequate for correctly modelling its distribution on the PFCs.

LOW temperature plasmas , *EXCITED states , *DENSE plasmas - Abstract
To evaluate the impact of transport of metastable, vibrationally excited states of the hydrogen molecule in dense and cold plasmas each vibrational state must be simulated as an individual species. Eirene neutral gas simulations of a one‐dimensional flux‐tube using a metastable‐resolved model indicate a 30–50% decrease in the effective dissociation rate compared to simulations using a metastable‐unresolved setup, which consider a single molecular species. Zero‐dimensional Eirene simulations omitting transport effects predict a 25–65% decrease in the effective dissociation rate due to differences between the metastable‐unresolved AMJUEL and the metastable‐resolved H2VIBR rates available in Eirene. The exclusion of molecular hydrogen depletion via electronically excited states and vibrational transitions v→v±N,N>1 from the metastable‐resolved rates reduce the effective dissociation rate. By accounting for the difference caused by the different collisional‐radiative treatment of the metastable‐resolved rates compared to the metastable‐unresolved rates, transport effects are expected to be relevant under detached divertor conditions. It is, however, not possible to individually assess the role of the collisional‐radiative processes and transport on the effective dissociation rate using the currently available atomic and molecular rates for the metastable‐resolved and metastable‐unresolved Eirene setups. A fluid collisional-radiative model for H2 has been implemented in the edge-fluid code UEDGE and compared to the kinetic neutral code EIRENE on a simple, 2D, orthogonal domain with a constant, static plasma distribution. The novel CRUMPET Python tool was used to implement dissociation and energy rate coefficients that consider molecular-assisted processes, binding energy, and radiation due to molecular processes into the UEDGE fluid molecular model. The agreement between the fluid and kinetic molecular models was found to be within 20% when corresponding rates were used in UEDGE and EIRENE for a domain with absorbing boundaries. When wall recycling was considered, EIRENE predicted up to a factor of 2.2 higher molecular densities than UEDGE at T

The present article deals with the mosaic pavements of one of most significant residential complexes in Late Antique Philippopolis – the Domus Eirene. The name of the complex refers to the personification that is the main element in the decoration not only of the reception hall, but the entire building. An analysis of two main aspects is made: one concerning the transformation of the image of the personification into a Christian saint, and another which concerns the transformation of the complex itself into a domus episcopalis and how that is reflected in the mosaic pavements. In the case of Eirene the image may have well been connected with historical events, contemporary or nearly contemporary with the time when the mosaic was produced, and also with political and religious propaganda.

Four inscribed votives, introduced in this contribution were found in the Lycaonian city of Savatra and are dated to the Roman Imperial Period. Two of them (No. 1 and 2) were dedicated to Zeus Dalbenos, which is only known from an inscription on the base of the Silvanus statuette preserved in a private collection at Barcelona. The first, which has a bull relief, was the votive of Kadmos, son of C(alpurnius?) Germanicianus. The second was erected by a citizen by the name of Zethos for all of his family. It is concluded here that Zeus Dalbenos was a cult which originated from Phrygia or it was a local cult of Savatra, which seems more preferable. The inscription on the third votive, which was offered to Zeus and the goddess of peace Eirene by a priest by the name of Mareis, records the epithets of Zeus as Keraunios, Astrapton, Syrtios and Bronton. The epithet Syrtios has not been documented to date. The last inscribed altar is a votive of all demos for Ares and the listening deities Areiai. Two epigraphic documents from Savatra attest the local cult of Ares worshipped together with the Areiai. At the end of the article also discussed is the presence of the epigraphic documents relating to the soldiers from Savatra, which provides an indication of the importance of the city's geopolitical position during the Roman Imperial Period. - Abstract
Marine hydroids, the polyp stage of hydrozoans, are assumed to be carnivores and play an important role in benthic-pelagic coupling processes by regulating zooplankton populations and transferring energy. The known hydroid diets mainly consist of zooplankton as well as some benthic diatoms and metazoans, almost all of which have smaller dimensions than the polyp. In the present study, a large-scale breeding failure of the early juveniles of the ivory shell Babylonia areolata (Mollusca: Gastropoda: Babyloniidae) was found in a local aquaculture farm in Fujian, China in July 2018. About 640,000 out of 800,000 early juveniles (80%) died due to predation by a millimetre-sized colonial hydroid species that was initially overlooked. The hydrozoan species was identified as Eirene sp. (Cnidaria: Hydrozoa: Eirenidae) via the integration of morphological and molecular data. A laboratory feeding experiment showed that the hydroid predation led to an overall mortality of ivory shell juveniles of up to 92.6% after 48 h. The predation process was observed in the laboratory and a video showing the entire process was prepared. This is the first report of hydroids preying on gastropod juveniles, revealing a previously unknown threat to mollusc aquaculture including ivory shells. Several management practices are suggested to mitigate this newly recognized threat. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

LOCAL thermodynamic equilibrium , *IONS , *MAGNETISM , *DIFFUSION - Abstract
Charged particles of species different from the major constituents of a plasma might not reach local thermodynamic equilibrium during their lifespan. Such low collisional ions render the often‐used fluid description, assuming Maxwellian velocity distribution, as insufficient. Hence, kinetic treatment of such minorities becomes inevitable. The three‐dimensional kinetic neutral particle Monte‐Carlo code EIRENE [D. Reiter et al., Fusion Science and Technology, 47 (2), 172 (2005)] possesses a model for ion transport reduced in physics, consisting of field‐line tracing and energy relaxation of particles. The trajectory integration is now extended to account for first‐order particle drifts, anomalous cross‐field diffusion denoting for turbulence effects, and the consideration of the magnetic mirror force. The technical implementation, as well as the verification of the enhanced kinetic ion transport is being reported. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It focuses on those feminine and masculine elements present on the language of the Roman pax, as well as on their evolution and meaning shifts. In Roman times, the gates of Janus symbolised the external relations of the city of Rome. In fact, before the Principate of Augustus they were only closed in two moments. This is why, during the Principate of Augustus, this ritual was revived as a way of promoting the end of war. Augustan literature and iconography reflects this phenomenon, associating it with the idea of pax and saeculum aureum. Whereas in Republican times the concept of pax referred to the submission of the other, during the crisis of the Republic it was used as a political promise concerning the end of confrontations (both external and internal) and the underlying well-being. The rise of pax occurred during the Principate of Augustus, who presented himself as its guarantor. In this context, the notion of pax acquired new connotations when it was assimilated to Eirene, the Greek goddess of peace, implying the Hellenization and feminisation of a concept previously associated with Janus. This paper aims to contribute to the understanding of how concepts of peace were reformulated and redefined during the crisis of the Republic, and then employed as part of the propagation of the Augustan pax. For this purpose, a meaningful combination of different methodologies of historical research is proposed, namely the analysis of coins, iconography and written sources.

- Abstract
JET-ILW type I ELMy H-modes at 2.5 MA/2.8 T with constant NBI heating (23 MW) and gas fuelling rate were performed, utilising edge localised mode (ELM) pacing by vertical kicks and plasma shaping (triangularity, delta) as tools to disentangle the effects of ELMs, inter-ELM transport and edge stability on the pedestal particle balance. In agreement with previous studies, the pedestal confinement improves with increasing delta, mostly due to a significant increase in pedestal density while the ELM frequency (fELM) is decreased. Improved pedestal confinement with increasing delta was observed even when the pedestal MHD stability was degraded artificially by vertical kicks, implying that increased triangularity may favourably affect the inter-ELM pedestal recovery. The workflow developed to quantify the pedestal particle balance uses high time-resolution profile reflectometry to characterise the inter-ELM evolution of the plasma particle content (dN/dt), the NEO drift-kinetic solver to evaluate the neoclassical fluxes and interpretative EDGE2D-EIRENE simulations to estimate the edge particle source. The edge particle source is then constrained by deuterium Balmer-alpha line intensity measurements in the main chamber, which are, however, strongly affected by reflections from the metal walls. The reflections are accounted for by the CHERAB code taking the divertor emission (the brightest light source in the torus) distribution from imaging spectroscopy measurements as input. Our analysis shows that in the second half of the ELM cycle, the volume-integrated particle source is larger than dN/dt, indicating that transport plays a key role in the inter-ELM pedestal recovery., QC 20230404

Plasma edge simulations with codes like SOLPS-ITER are widely employed to interpret fusion experiments. However, numerical errors appearing in such simulations are rarely investigated, despite their potential large impact on simulation results. These errors consist of the statistical error and the bias, both resulting from the finite number of employed EIRENE Monte Carlo particles and incomplete convergence, and the discretization error due to the finite resolution of the computational grids. In this contribution, the resulting numerical errors on simulations of pure deuterium and neon seeded H-mode EAST discharges are examined. The statistical error can be kept small compared to other numerical error contributions by averaging the plasma profiles. This allows investigating the bias and discretization errors using Richardson extrapolation. It is shown that grid refinement and the number of employed Monte Carlo particles have the largest influence on the result, in agreement with similar studies of an ITER deuterium case. For the first time, numerical error bars on the entire simulated target profiles are determined showing that the largest numerical error is 17.9%, mainly due to the plasma grid discretization. On top, also numerical errors on simulated neutral pressures are investigated in detail, for which the statistical error is dominant. The analysis demonstrates which setup is needed to keep numerical errors limited: the SOLPS-ITER averaging procedure should be employed including enough EIRENE particles, and the involved grids should be sufficiently refined to reduce discretization errors.

Paul’s Spirit of Peace, a Study in Biblical Theology discusses the central role of peace in the New Testament, with a particular attention given to Pauline writings, and argues that this peace is a work of the Spirit. The chosen methodology is rhetorical-, discourse-, and social analysis. The dissertation shows that the main problem Paul was facing was unresolved conflicts, in other words lack of peace with God and between groups and individuals in the Pauline congregations. Εἰρήνη is suggested to be the main purpose of communication not only in the Pauline literature but in the non-Pauline New Testament documents as well. Πνεῦμα establishes, maintains, and intensifies harmonious relationships. The nature of these relationships is εἰρήνη. Though every letter is contingent and was born in different circumstances, εἰρήνη is realised by πνεῦμα in a way that the exact circumstances and problems find a solution that has eternity in view as well as the present relationship with God and the fellow-believer. Reconciliation with God in Christ by the Spirit leads into a life of peace with God and also needs to lead to a life of peace with people by the transforming work of the Spirit. The beginning point in Galatians, Chapter Two of the thesis, and Romans, Chapter Three, is Paul’s greeting. It is suggested that this was not just a simple greeting but part of the πρόθεσις and therefore indicating the main purpose of writing. The main problem in Galatians and Romans is explained as being conflicts, lack of εἰρήνη. This problem is solved by πνεῦμα, but requires the active collaboration of the believer in Christ. Chapter Four suggests that also in Paul’s other undisputed letters εἰρήνη is the main purpose of writing and that πνεῦμα plays an essential role in its realisation. Chapter Five proposes that the disputed Pauline letters and the non-Pauline New Testament documents follow the same principle, although using πνεῦμα less frequently. In the Gospels and Acts, Jesus carried out the messianic ministry by the power of the Spirit in order to accomplish his peace mission and this was continued by his disciples after the resurrection and intensified experience of the Spirit at Pentecost. The non-Pauline epistles express the same essential idea as the Pauline epistles in that peace is established by the Spirit when the people of God seek harmonious relationships and participate actively in resolving conflicts. This peace is conditional and requires the positive human reaction to God’s offer of peace and the constant walk by the Spirit in order to live also in harmonious relationships with people.

It is shown that numerical modelling of edge plasma physics may be successfully parallelized in time. The parareal algorithm has been employed for this purpose and the SOLPS code package coupling the B2.5 finite-volume fluid plasma solver with the kinetic Monte-Carlo neutral code Eirene has been used as a test bed. The complex dynamics of the plasma and neutrals in the scrape-off layer (SOL) region makes this a unique application. It is demonstrated that a significant computational gain (more than an order of magnitude) may be obtained with this technique. The use of the IPS framework for event-based parareal implementation optimizes resource utilization and has been shown to significantly contribute to the computational gain. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SOLPS-ITER simulations of the European DEMO reactor with a Super-X divertor, which has larger major radius at the outer target and increased connection length, show an increased operational space for divertor power exhaust compared to the conventional single-null configuration. Using a multi-fluid approach with fluid neutrals and charge-state bundling of impurities, we assessed the existence and boundaries of the operational space in the single-null and Super-X configurations by carrying out fuelling, seeding and power scans. Compared to the conventional single-null divertor, the Super-X divertor offers lower impurity concentration (factor ∼2 lower) at the same main plasma density, and consistent with this, it has lower main plasma density at the same impurity concentration level. This observed difference is in line with the simple analytical Lengyel model predictions resulting from the increased connection length in the super-X configuration. DEMO with a Super-X divertor demonstrates remarkable robustness against increases in input power, and in this study is able to exhaust the maximum expected steady-state separatrix-crossing power of 300 MW while maintaining acceptable impurity concentration along the separatrix This is something that was not possible in the single-null configuration in this study. This robustness of the Super-X divertor lies mostly in its capability to sufficiently dissipate power in its divertor via argon (Ar) radiation at acceptable Ar concentration, which is related to two factors: long (with respect to single-null) parallel connection length from the upstream to the outer target and higher but tolerable extrinsic impurity concentration at higher input powers. Finally, consistent with neon-seeded simulations of ITER, it is observed in all our simulations that the plasma density drops with increasing Ar concentration given fixed power input. We find that as the Ar content increases, the accompanying enhancement of Ar radiation reduces the power available for deuterium (D) to be ionized, thus limiting the D ionization particle source, and consequently reducing the plasma density.

The interaction between plasma, neutrals and surfaces in fusion reactors is of immense importance for heat and particle control, especially for the next generation of devices. Heat loads of 10 MW m − 2 are expected for steady state operation at ITER and up to 20 MW m − 2 in slow transient situations. To study the complex physics appearing between the plasma and the divertor material, as well as techniques for heat flux mitigation, plasma linear devices are employed. Magnum-PSI, located at DIFFER, can reproduce the heat and particle loads expected at ITER. However, due to the complexity of the plasma–wall interaction, numerical models are required to better understand the experiments and to extrapolate the results to a tokamak divertor configuration. For tokamak geometries, SOLPS-ITER (formerly known as B2.5-Eirene) is employed to solve the plasma and neutral distribution in a coupled way. However, the utilization of this code for linear devices is not straightforward. Thus, a neutral module was developed with linear devices in mind, named Eunomia. Nevertheless, there is still a relevant interest in using SOLPS-ITER with linear devices, as it allows to easily transfer knowledge about relevant atomic and molecular processes close to the surface and the effect of different mitigation techniques. This work presents a systematic comparison between the two neutral modules, Eirene and Eunomia, in stand-alone and coupled runs. Special attention is paid to the implementation of plasma-neutral interactions, in which both codes diverge significantly. The sources of particles and energy that are used by B2.5 in a coupled run are analysed. Significant differences in the implementation of electron impact ionization, molecular assisted recombination and proton–molecule elastic collisions lead to disparate sources of particles and energy and, in some cases, differences in the distribution of neutrals achieved by each code. Moreover, a double counting in proton–atom collisions was identified in Eunomia as a result of this analysis, artificially increasing the plasma-neutral sink of energy. This would lead to different plasma evolutions in coupled runs. Nevertheless, additional-free parameters in both coupled code suites leave sufficient freedom to match experimental data. Additional data would be required to further constrain these parameters and the coupled solution.

30. Vestigia pacis. The Roman peace treaty: structure or event?
- Abstract
Introduction The problems related to the subject of peace treaties in Roman law are abundant. Not only does the thin evidence of the sources make it difficult to gather a status quaestionis. What do we know about the content and function of peace treaties which have been passed down to us from history? What remains to be discovered? What questions of principle dowe have to ask when it comes to the appropriate methods we should employ? ‘New’ sources, nova reperta so to speak, are only seldom found. Thus, we have to resort to reinterpreting the rather limited amount of well-known sources and to reviewing the older secondary literature to see to what extent it ispossible to make the texts speak to us – rather than being obscured by the interpretations of their own age. Taking a classical vexata quaestio as our starting point, we will take an overall view of the problems, first of substance and then of method, caused by the peace treaty. From this methodological discussion, we will finally return to our initial question. Even the concept of pax raises the problem whether pax is a legal act or a factual state of being. For our overall view, we first have to ask what can be said about the ‘classical’ international law of ancient Rome as a ‘system’ and especially about the function of the peace treaty within such a system. The new magnetic configurations for tokamak divertors, snowflake and super-X, proposed to mitigate the problem of the power exhaust in reactors have clearly evidenced the need for an accurate and reliable modeling of the physics governing the interaction with the plates. The initial effort undertaken jointly by ENEA and IPPLM has been focused to exploit a simple and versatile modeling tool, namely the 2D TECXY code, to obtain preliminary comparison between the conventional and snowflake configurations for the proposed new device FAST that should realize an edge plasma with properties quite close to those of a reactor. The very interesting features found for the snowflake, namely a power load mitigation much larger than expected directly from the change of the magnetic topology, has further pushed us to check these results with the more sophisticated computational tool EDGE2D coupled with the neutral code module EIRENE. After a preparatory work that has been carried out in order to adapt this code combination to deal with non-conventional, single null equilibria and in particular with second order nulls in the poloidal field generated in the snowflake configuration, in this paper we describe the first activity to compare these codes and discuss the first results obtained for FAST. The outcome of these EDGE2D runs is in qualitative agreement with those of TECXY, confirming the potential benefit obtainable from a snowflake configuration. (© 2014 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. - Abstract
Improving the description of the far scrape-off layer (SOL) in current edge code suites such as SOLPS is the subject of current efforts, given the importance of main chamber plasma wall interactions (first wall recycling and sputtering) in the design and operation of tokamaks. One of the specific features of the far SOL is the large amplitude of turbulent fluctuations. Neutral particles (atom and molecules) are affected by these fluctuations through the rates of atomic physics processes. In accordance with experimentally measured PDF (probability density function) for both the plasma density and temperature fluctuations, n e and T e are modeled using a Beta PDF. Space and time correlations are accounted for by using an autogressive process. The effects of fluctuations on the neutral atoms penetration depth, as well as on the beryllium sputtering yield are discussed (© 2012 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Abstract: A systematic numerical study of the deposition of Be and C atoms on the ITER main chamber first mirrors and their erosion due to fast D(T) atoms has been carried out. The calculations are based on Monte-Carlo neutral transport modelling (with the EIRENE code) on a simulated steady-state plasma background. A generic reduced model of cylindrical and conical diagnostic ducts is considered. The results indicate that the sputtering of the mirrors can be made acceptably small if they are installed in sufficiently long ducts. At the same time the deposition of impurities can be a serious issue even for mirrors protected in long channels. However, the calculations of deposition are not very reliable at the current stage and a need to seriously improve them is indicated. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Change of Hα intensity profiles depending on magnetic configurations is observed in the divertor plasma. It can be explained by the magnetic field line structures in the ergodic layer and the divertor legs. The behavior of neutral particles in the plasma periphery is investigated by a three-dimensional neutral particle transport simulation code which assumes that the distribution of the plasma flow onto the divertor plates corresponds to that of the strike points calculated by magnetic field line traces. Vertical Hα intensity profiles and polarization resolved Hα spectra are calculated by the simulation code including the effect of Doppler broadening, fine structure splitting and polarization of the Hα emission, which agree well with the measurements in various magnetic configurations. It shows spontaneous formation of high neutral density in inboard side of the torus, which is independent of the magnetic configurations in LHD. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Predictive and interpretative edge plasma models often rely upon a kinetic neutral particle module. A virtually exact description of atomic, molecular and radiative reactions is provided via Monte Carlo synthesis of the relevant processes. For many integrated edge transport models, such as B2–EIRENE (‘SOLPS’), OEDGE, EDGE2D–EIRENE (all 2D) and EMC3–EIRENE (3D) the EIRENE Monte Carlo code provides this microscopic analysis for the macroscopic plasma flow fields. The current status of the neutral-particle and radiation transport model in the EIRENE Monte Carlo Code is presented. The directions of further developments of the databases are outlined. Abstract: In Tore Supra long pulses, particle balance gives evidence that a constant fraction of the injected gas (typically 50%) is retained in the wall for the duration of the shot, showing no sign of wall saturation after more than 6min of discharge. During the discharge, the retention rate first decreases (phase 1), then remains constant throughout the pulse (phase 2). Phase 1 could be interpreted as implantation of particles combined with a constant codeposition rate, while phase 2 could correspond to codeposition alone, once the implanted surfaces are saturated with deuterium. This paper presents a possible contribution of charge exchange neutrals to the implantation process, based on modelling results with the Eirene neutral transport code. A complex pattern of particle implantation is evidenced, with saturation time constants ranging from less than one to several hundreds seconds, compatible with the experimental behaviour during phase 1. Abstract: For some divertor aspects, such as detached plasmas or the private flux zone, it is not clear that the controlling physics has been fully identified. This is a particular concern when the details of the plasma are likely to be important in modeling the problem – for example, modeling co-deposition in detached inner divertors. An empirical method of ‘reconstructing’ the plasma based on direct experimental measurements may be useful in such situations. It is shown that a detached plasma in the outer divertor leg of DIII-D can be reconstructed reasonably well using spectroscopic and probe data as input to a simple onion-skin model and the Monte Carlo hydrogenic code, EIRENE. The calculated 2D distributions of n e and T e in the detached divertor were compared with direct measurements from the divertor Thomson scattering system, a diagnostic capability unique to DIII-D. Abstract: The ITER divertor will be more collisional than divertors in existing tokamaks and the neutral modeling tools used for predictive ITER modeling need to be validated for similar divertor conditions in order to increase confidence in the results. The EIRENE neutral code has been applied to the Alcator C-Mod divertor, where collisional effects such as Lyman series photon trapping and neutral viscosity have been observed. The plasma solution used as input to EIRENE agrees well with the available diagnostic data for the divertor and was generated using an empirical Onion-Skin Method interpretive code that requires a large amount of experimental data as input. The calculated divertor pressure is 11±3 mTorr, a factor ∼2 lower than the measured value of 25±3 mTorr. The neutral solution is sensitive to photon trapping, viscosity, elastic collisions between plasma ions and molecules, and the amount of leakage through the outer divertor substructure. Studies of mitochondrial redox signaling predict that the colonial hydroids Eirene viridula and Podocoryna carnea should respond to manipulations of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Both species encrust surfaces with feeding polyps connected by networks of stolons; P. carnea is more ‘sheet-like’ with closely spaced polyps and short stolons, while E. viridula is more ‘runner-like’ with widely spaced polyps and long stolons. Treatment with the chemical anti- oxidant vitamin C diminishes ROS in mitochondrion-rich epitheliomuscular cells (EMCs) and produces phenotypic effects (sheet-like growth) similar to uncouplers of oxidative phosphorylation. In peripheral stolon tips, treatment with vitamin C triggers a dramatic increase of ROS that is followed by tissue death and stolon regression. The enzymatic anti-oxidant catalase is probably not taken up by the colony but, rather, converts hydrogen peroxide in the medium to water and oxygen. Exogenous catalase does not affect ROS in mitochondrion-rich EMCs, but does increase the amounts of ROS emitted from peripheral stolons, resulting in rapid, runner-like growth. Treatment with exogenous hydrogen peroxide increases ROS levels in stolon tips and results in somewhat faster colony growth. Finally, untreated colonies of E. viridula exhibit higher levels of ROS in stolon tips than untreated colonies of P. carnea. ROS may participate in a number of putative signaling pathways: (1) high levels of ROS may trigger cell and tissue death in peripheral stolon tips; (2) more moderate levels of ROS in stolon tips may trigger outward growth, inhibit branching and, possibly, mediate the redox signaling of mitochondrion-rich EMCs; and (3) ROS may have an extra-colony function, perhaps in suppressing the growth of bacteria. The contributions of deuterium molecular emission to the total deuterium radiation was assessed in DIII-D ohmically-confined plasmas in high-recycling divertor conditions. Radial profiles of the deuterium Ly-α line intensity across the low-field side divertor leg were obtained with the recently installed divertor Survey Poor Resolution, Extended Spectrometer [1]. A high-resolution spectrometer was used to measure the poloidal profiles of the deuterium Balmer-α and the deuterium Fulcher-α band intensity in the visible wavelength range. The scrape-off layer plasma and neutral distributions were simulated using the edge fluid EDGE2D-EIRENE [2], and the numerical solutions constrained utilizing Thomson scattering and Langmuir probe measurements at the low-field side midplane and the divertor target plate. The studies show that for these conditions molecular emission plays a negligible role in the total radiative power balance of the low-field side divertor, but molecular processes are important when evaluating deuterium Balmer-α line intensity for code-experiment validation. Abstract: Linear kinetic Monte Carlo particle transport models are frequently employed in fusion plasma simulations to quantify atomic and surface effects on the main plasma flow dynamics. Separate codes are used for transport of neutral particles (incl. radiation) and charged particles (trace impurity ions). Integration of both modules into main plasma fluid solvers provides then self-consistent solutions, in principle. The required interfaces are far from trivial, because rapid atomic processes in particular in the edge region of fusion plasmas require either smoothing and resampling, or frequent transfer of particles from one into the other Monte Carlo code. We propose a different scheme here, in which despite the inherently different mathematical form of kinetic equations for ions and neutrals (e.g. Fokker–Planck vs. Boltzmann collision integrals) both types of particle orbits can be integrated into one single code. We show that the approximations and shortcomings of this “single sourcing” concept (e.g., restriction to explicit ion drift orbit integration) can be fully tolerable in a wide range of typical fusion edge plasma conditions, and be overcompensated by the code-system simplicity, as well as by inherently ensured consistency in geometry (one single numerical grid only) and (the common) atomic and surface process modules. Occasionally some additional, very small adradial bulbs. Between perradial- and interradial bulbs usually three cordyli. Cordyli relatively large, hollow, cylindrical gastrodermal cells, with a few nematocysts at the tip. Some of the cordyli also with an ocellus near their origin. Polyps unknown. Variation: Young medusae have only two tentacles and very small lateral outgrowths of the radial canals. Xu & Zhang (1974) depicted an animal with 16 tentacles. Distribution: Japan, China, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, North Island of New Zealand (Kramp, 1965; Bouillon, 1984; Bouillon & Barnett, 1999). Type locality: Japan, Shizuoka Prefecture, Shimizu Bay. Remarks: The identification of this material as St. gotoi was largely influenced by Bouillon & Barnett (1999) who used also material provided by the author. There are nevertheless some differences of the New Zealand medusae to those of Japan and China: there are fewer cordyli (24-26 versus up to 88), the bell diameters are smaller (4-8 versus up to 15), the interradial tentacles are often small or absent, the mesogloea is much thicker, and the lateral outhgrowths are limited to the proximal half of the tentacles. It is assumed that these are population differences. Additionally, it was noted that the mesogloea shrinks in formalin-preserved animals. A later transfer into 70% ethanol makes the mesogloea disappear completely, resulting in a condition where the lateral outgrowths cf. the radial canals reach the bell margin. It is possible that some published illustrations of Staurodiscus species are actually based on such material with a shrunken bell. Family Eirenidae Haeckel, 1879 Genus Eirene Eschscholtz, 1829 Diagnosis: Eirenidae medusa with distinct, broad gastric peduncle; cirri absent; with or without excretory pores; 4-6 simple radial canals; gonads on subumbrellar part of radial canals, not extending to gastric peduncle; numerous statocysts (>8). The hydroids of ‘ Campanulina ’, ‘ Campanopsis ’ or ‘ Eugymnanthea ’ type (see Bouillon et al., 2006). Remark: Clytia species with a short gastric peduncle like Clytia gregaria (see below) are formally not distinguishable from Eirene species. Thus, some nominal Eirene species (Schuchert, 2017a; see Du et al., 2010 for a key to the species) with a shallow peduncle and no excretory papillae could therefore also be Clytia species. Life-cycle studies or DNA barcodes (Schuchert et al., 2017) have to confirm the identity of Eirene pentanemalis Lin, Xu & Huang, 2013, Eirene brevistylus Huang & Xu, 1994, and other similar species. In this article we analyze the cult of Nike in Athens in fifth century BC in relation to war and specifically to peace as a claim to victory in warlike conflicts. We review the cult of Nike since the beginning of the century but, we will especially address into the controversy of the architectural project of the Nike temple in connection with the famous peace of Callias (449) and with the institution of the democratic priesthood of Athena Nike held by Myrrhine. During the decade of 440, peace was created as a victory, a theme that survived during the Peloponnesian War as we see in documents of that time, such as Aristophanes’ Lysistrata. The mythical and cultic elaborations of war and peace highlight the role that Greeks grant the peace as affirmation of victory.

In the past at JET, with the MkI divertor, a systematic study of the influence of X-point height and poloidal flux expansion has been conducted [1,2] showing minor differences in the radiation distribution, whereas in [3] experiment and simulations have shown enhancement of detachment as the flux expansion was increased. More recently at JET, equipped with the ITER-like wall (ILW), radiative seeded scenarios have been studied and a maximum radiation fraction 75% has been achieved. EDGE2D-EIRENE [4-6] simulations [7,8] have already shown that the divertor heat fluxes can be reduced with N2 injection, qualitatively consistent with experimental observations [9], by adjusting the impurity injection rate to reproduce the measured divertor radiation. In this paper we will present edge predictive simulations on the assessment of effects of poloidal flux expansion and recycling on radiation distribution and X-point peaking on JET-ILW nitrogen seeded plasmas.
