The present investigation was aimed at predicting a still (i.e., dead) vs. live embryo within a hatching goose egg by measuring the eggshell cooling rate. For this, we daily measured the temperature (T) values on the shell surface of goose eggs after they were removed from the incubator and during further natural cooling. T was recorded every 0.5 h for further 1.5 h of cooling. It was possible to recognize eggs with dead embryos using the combination of T , egg weight (W), and surface area (S). The resultant indicator (TS / W) was called specific temperature index (STI). The mathematical relationship using STI measurements between Days 8–13 facilitated 80 % correct identification of the eggs with dead embryos. Additionally, we derived mathematical dependencies for shell weight (W s) and thickness (t) by utilizing the values of W , egg volume (V), S , the average T of all measurements taken, as well as the drop in T during 1.5 h of natural cooling. The key advantage of these parameters was their measurement and/or calculation by applying non-destructive methods. The integrated application of these parameters resulted in achieving high calculation accuracy as judged by correlation coefficients of 0.908 for W s and 0.593 for t. These novel mathematical models have the potential to decrease hatching waste by predicting embryo viability. Ammonia decomposition is a key technology for its use as a hydrogen carrier and in the recovery of H 2 from waste streams containing ammonia. The coupling of the catalytic decomposition of ammonia with an H 2 permeoselective membrane improves the process by mitigating thermodynamic constraints and producing a flux of high-purity hydrogen, not requiring further separation/purification. In this study, we compare the behaviour of an eggshell catalyst 1.3 wt % Ru/Al 2 O 3 catalyst in a packed bed reactor (PBR) and a packed bed membrane reactor (PBMR) using an ultrathin Pd membrane (3.4 μm). Tests were made at 11 bar(a) with a weight hourly space velocity of NH 3 in the 0.560–1.68 Lꞏg−1ꞏh−1 range and temperatures of 350–400 °C, e.g. milder conditions than the conventional ammonia cracking catalysts. Under optimised conditions (0.56 Lꞏg−1ꞏh−1, 400 °C, sweep gas flow 0.55 L min−1), the PBMR shows excellent performance, achieving NH 3 conversion, H 2 productivity and recovery factor of 99%, 47 mmol H2 ·g Ru −1·min−1, and 94.9%, respectively. PBMR increases by ∼50% the conversion rate compared to PBR. Without a sweep gas, PBMR performances are lower, even still higher than in PBR. For the first time, superior or comparable performance was demonstrated compared to similar systems using pure ammonia in terms of conversion, hydrogen recovery, H 2 productivity, and Ru utilisation. These results can be further enhanced with vacuum systems to convert diluted ammonia streams into high-purity hydrogen for small-scale distributed systems and can be extended to other reactions. • An egg-shell Ru/Al 2 O 3 with an ultra-thin Pd membrane achieved 99% NH 3 conversion at 400 °C in PBMR, outperforming PBR. • Ultra-thin Pd membranes and sweep gas allow 94.88% H 2 recovery factor by decomposition of diluted ammonia. • Dilute NH 3 can improve safety and decrease noble metal usage, offering economic and environmental benefits. We collected Cooper's Hawk (Accipiter cooperii) eggshells from nests in the Tucson, Arizona, USA, area in the 1990s incidental to other activities and compared them to pre-DDT Cooper's Hawk eggshells (119 museum specimens from 14 states, 1894–1939) ranging from 0.284–0.402 mm (x̄= 0.348 mm, SD = 0.0243) and we also compared them to reported thicknesses found in the literature. We found that within-state eggshell thickness varied as did eggshell thickness among states. Of the pre-DDT eggshells measured, those from Arizona, Utah, and Nevada were thinnest and generally eggs from western states (x̄= 0.339 mm, SD = 0.0184) had significantly thinner eggshells than those for eastern states (x̄= 0.359 mm, SD = 0.0256). Other published measurements of pre-DDT Cooper's Hawk eggshells were slightly lower than ours but were generally within the lower range of our measurements, which was expected because of the measuring technique used in earlier studies versus our method. Cooper's Hawk eggshells that were collected from nests in the Tucson area in the 1990s had a mean thickness of 0.309 mm (SD = 0.0191) and the pre-DDT mean thickness of museum eggshells from Arizona was 0.333 mm (SD = 0.018). Although the Tucson eggshells were significantly thinner than pre-DDT eggshells overall (t = 10.8, df = 100.4, P < 0.001), some individual pre-DDT eggshells and even some means from other regions (e.g., New Hampshire, New York, and Nevada) were similarly thin. Measurements of these pre-DDT eggshells show wide variation and demonstrate the importance of comparing eggs from the same geographical area and having an adequate sample size. Because of the exceptional qualities, nano-hydroxyapatites, or n-HA, are excellent materials for diverse applications. It is simple and convenient to synthesize from various natural ingredients. The synthesis of n-HA from eggshells, a typical domestic waste product in the neighborhood, was the primary goal of this study project. This synthesis of n-HA was performed using ammonia and orthophosphoric acid as chemical reagents. The synthesized n-HA have been characterized by UV (Ultraviolet), FTIR (Fourier Transformed Infrared Spectroscopy), SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy), TEM (Transmission Electron Microscopy), and XRD (X-ray diffraction) analysis. The peak formed by the UV analysis verified the successful formation of n-HA in the solution. The bandgap has been determined through additional research on the UV data. The SEM and TEM images show the size and form of the synthesized n-HA. Based on TEM observations, the synthesized n-HA has a size in the range of 10 to 40 nm. This study evaluated the effects of cyclic eggshell temperature between 10 and 14 d of embryogenesis on traits viz. the expression of MYOZ2, PPARγ and GPx7 in breast muscle, meat quality and incidence of white striping at slaughter age.2. Eggs were obtained from Cobb and Ross broiler breeders to investigate the response of breeds to eggshell temperature, which regulated air temperature. A total of 784 eggs were incubated at either the control eggshell temperature (37.8°C) from 0 to 18 d or exposed to cyclic high eggshell temperature (CHT) at 38.8°C for 6 h/d between 10 and 14 d of incubation. The temperature was 36.8°C between 18 and 21 d. Hatched chicks were reared under optimum rearing conditions. The birds were sampled at 19 d of incubation, at hatch and at 42 d post-hatch.3. There was no effect of eggshell temperature on yolk-free body weight and residual yolk sac weight. The CHT chicks had wider breasts on the day of hatching.4. At hatch and 42d post-hatch, PPARγ expression in Cobb-CHT was upregulated 4.78-fold and downregulated 3.28-fold, respectively, compared to the Cobb-control. At slaughter age, chickens from Ross-CHT had 1.98- and 2.33-fold upregulated PPARγ and GPX7 expressions, respectively, compared to Ross-control. The CHT increased GPx7 expression in the Cobb-CHT day-old chicks compared to the Cobb-control. On ED19, MYOZ2 expression was upregulated in Cobb and downregulated in Ross by CHT.5. Background: Sustained drug delivery system (DDS) for clinically relevant osteosarcoma medications is a promising strategy for treatment. β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) microbeads loaded with doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOX) and cis-diamminedichloroplatin (CDDP) anticancer drugs in a matrix of hydroxyapatite-keratin-polyvinyl alcohol composite matrix scaffolds (HAp-K-PVA) was developed as promising DDS. HAp, β-TCP, and K utilized for the development of DDS were resourced from avian eggshells and human hairs, respectively, and duly characterized before application. Methods: The β-TCP/alginate microbeads were fabricated using droplet extrusion and ionotropic gelation, and integrated into secondary drug carrier HAp-K-PVA composite matrix, via freeze gelation. The physicochemical and thermal characterization of developed microbeads and matrix scaffolds was performed. Results: When DOX and CDDP were co-loaded in DDS, a synergistic impact was observed after 30 days of continuous release, in contrast to the immediate outburst as seen with individual DOX and CDDP releases. Besides, the drug release from the microbeads only, the release with the HAp-K-PVA composite matrix scaffolds was observed slower. The controlled release, antibacterial effectiveness against the test pathogens and cell viability with osteoblast-like osteosarcoma (UTOS) cells indicated the therapeutic potential for the treatment of osteosarcoma in situ. The cell viability was observed for 24 h, which showed nearly 90% after 24 h for HAp-K-PVA composite matrix scaffolds, decreased for all the scaffold groups after 72 h, indicating the enhancement due to combined synergistic effect of the co-loaded drugs. Conclusion: This study established a promising foundation for novel and sustainable biomaterials for osteosarcoma treatment. Salted duck egg yolk, a key ingredient in various specialty foods in China, frequently contains broken eggshell fragments embedded in the yolk due to high-speed shell-breaking processes, which pose significant food safety risks. This paper presents an online detection method, YOLOv7-SEY-DeepSORT (salted egg yolk, SEY), designed to integrate an enhanced YOLOv7 with DeepSORT for real-time and accurate identification of salted egg yolks with impurities on production lines. The proposed method utilizes YOLOv7 as the core network, incorporating multiple Coordinate Attention (CA) modules in its Neck section to enhance the extraction of subtle eggshell impurities. To address the impact of imbalanced sample proportions on detection accuracy, the Focal-EIoU loss function is employed, adaptively adjusting bounding box loss values to ensure precise localization of yolks with impurities in images. The backbone network is replaced with the lightweight MobileOne neural network to reduce model parameters and improve real-time detection performance. DeepSORT is used for matching and tracking yolk targets across frames, accommodating rotational variations. Experimental results demonstrate that YOLOv7-SEY-DeepSORT achieves a mean average precision (mAP) of 0.931, reflecting a 0.53% improvement over the original YOLOv7. The method also shows enhanced tracking performance, with Multiple Object Tracking Accuracy (MOTA) and Multiple Object Tracking Precision (MOTP) scores of 87.9% and 73.8%, respectively, representing increases of 17.0% and 9.8% over SORT and 2.9% and 4.7% over Tracktor. Overall, the proposed method balances high detection accuracy with real-time performance, surpassing other mainstream object detection methods in comprehensive performance. Thus, it provides a robust solution for the rapid and accurate detection of defective salted egg yolks and offers a technical foundation and reference for future research on the automated and safe processing of egg products. The aim of the study was to investigate the shell thickness of table eggs using a destructive method with a focus on the technique of sampling from three locations in the equatorial plane, the sharp and the blunt end of the egg. The subject of the study was the eggshell thickness with membranes of the influence of the sample taken on the egg in equatorial plane 1, equatorial plane 2, equatorial plane 3, at the sharp end and the blunt end of the egg, and a laying hen of breed Dominant aged 61 weeks (3 small-breedings) and 104 weeks (1 small-breeding). The measurement of eggshell thickness was carried out using a DIAL INDICATOR deviation meter, with an accuracy of 0.01 mm and a maximum thickness of 30 mm. The SAS statistical package, version 8.2, was used for statistical evaluation of the results. The influence of the location of the eggshell sample taken in 3 locations of the equatorial plane, at the sharp and blunt end of the egg on its thickness in the range of average values of 0.32 to 0.40 mm was not statistically significant (P>0.05). The influence of laying hen age was statistically significant (P=0.05) by a higher eggshell thickness in the range of average values of 0.38 to 0.40 mm at 104 weeks compared with eggshell thickness of average values of 0.32 to 0.35 mm at 61 weeks. A strong linear positive correlation in eggshell thickness was found between two variables at all investigated sample locations on eggs laid by laying hens Dominant regardless of age. The overall results of eggshell thickness indicate that its evaluation is a complex process as an indicator of eggshell quali ty due to multifactorial external and internal influence. Considering the trend of lengthening the laying cycle in laying hens for environmental reasons, it is important to address the influence of age, housing system and breed suitability in relation to optimizing the uniformity of the thickness as part of the shell quality of the eggs. Nearly all dinosaur egg or oospecies occurrences from the Upper Cretaceous of France have been attributed to titanosaur dinosaurs. Here, we describe the first occurrence of probable hadrosauroid eggshells from France, which we assign to a new oospecies, Paraspheroolithus porcarboris oosp. nov. (oofamily: Spheroolithidae), from the upper ‘Argiles et Grès à Reptiles’ Formation (upper Maastrichtian) of Aix-en-Provence. Paraspheroolithus porcarboris differs from all other spheroolithid oospecies in the following combination of characteristics: prolatospherulitic morphotype, prolatocanaliculate pore system, prominent anastomosing ornamentation, medium eggshell thickness, less defined horizontal accretion lines and high pore density. The spheroolithid affinity places the new ootaxon outside oofamilies ascribed to titanosaurs (i.e. Megaloolithidae and Fusioolithidae), and thus its discovery expands the parataxonomic diversity of this region and formation. We suggest the taxonomic affinity of Spheroolithidae is somewhat broader than Hadrosauroidea, potentially encompassing all Ornithopoda. However, a hadrosauroid affinity remains the most plausible for Paraspheroolithus porcarboris based on the absence of other ornithopod remains from late Maastrichtian deposits of the Ibero-Armorican Island. The development of efficient and cost-effective electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) holds key to the large-scale production of hydrogen via a water splitting process. In this work, a bio-waste of eggshell membranes (ESMs) is utilized as a feedstock to fabricate Ni x S y -loaded carbon composite, which is further employed as a platform for the assembly of NiFe layered double hydroxides (NiFe LDH) with the aid of sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate via facile hydrothermal processes. The resulting nanoarchitectures consist of highly amorphous and intercalation-expanded NiFe LDH nanosheets attached to the carbon composite with strong interactions. The as-prepared samples are examined as electrocatalysts for the OER in alkaline electrolytes and the synergistic effects of the components are elucidated. The optimized sample exhibits a current density of 10 mA cm−2 at an overpotential of 266 mV in 0.1 M KOH, which is superior to the most previously reported non-precious-metal based electrocatalysts and even to the commercial IrO 2. Such remarkable catalytic activity is attributed to the in-situ assembly of NiFe LDH with the carbon composite, leading to the strong coupling interaction of the components. Egg waste is a major contributor to global food waste, accounting for 15% of discarded food in the United States. Typically, eggs have a shorter shelf life at room temperature and are preserved in refrigeration from production to consumption. However, maintaining constant refrigeration is energy‐intensive and expensive. Here, a bionanocomposite coating has been developed that incorporates each element of eggs – egg white, yolk, and eggshell – to increase the shelf life of fresh eggs without requiring further refrigeration. The quality of eggs has been successfully preserved for up to three weeks at room temperature. The coated eggs maintain the highest grade (AA) and exhibit improved Haugh Unit (HU), Yolk Index (YI), and pH compared to uncoated eggs. The coating reduces weight loss by ≈37% with an increase in HU (≈12.5%) and YI (≈13.9%). Morphological analysis reveals strong adhesion of the coating to the eggshell surface, showcasing promising barrier properties. The coating demonstrates an optimal combination of oxygen permeability (≈12.2 cm3 µm m−2 d−1 kPa−1) and water vapor transmission (≈31.5 g mm m−2 per day) with excellent antimicrobial properties. Background: Nonhealing diabetic wounds are a serious complication associated with extremely lethargic wound closure and a high risk of infection, leading to amputation or limb loss, as well as substantial health care costs and a poor quality of life for the patient. The effects of either eggshell membrane (ESM) and green seaweed (Ulva lactuca) extracts alone or in combination were evaluated for in vivo skin wound healing in a rat model of induced diabetes. Methods: Micronized powders of waste hen ESM, Ulva lactuca, and their 1:1 mixture were prepared using regular procedures. The mechanical, electrical, and surface morphology characteristics of powders were examined using direct compression, LCR-impedancemetry, and scanning electron microscopy. The effect of ESM, Ulva lactuca, and their mixture as compared to standard Dermazin treatments were evaluated on wounds inflicted on male Wistar Albino rats with induced diabetes. Quantitative wound healing rates at baseline and at 3, 7, 14, and 21 days of treatments among all rat groups were conducted using ANOVA. Qualitative histological analysis of epidermal re-epithelization, keratinocytes, basement membrane, infiltrating lymphocytes, collagen fibrines, and blood vessels at day 21 were performed using Image J processing program. Results: Compressive strength measurements of tablets showed a Young's modulus of 44.14 and 27.17 MPa for the ESM and ESM + Ulva lactuca mixture, respectively. Moreover, both samples exhibited relatively low relative permittivity values of 6.62 and 6.95 at 1 MHz, respectively, due to the porous surface morphology of ESM shown by scanning electron microscopy. On day 21, rats treated with ESM had a complete diabetic wound closure, hair regrowth, and a healing rate of 99.49%, compared to 96.79% for Dermazin, 87.05% for Ulva lactuca, 90.23% for the mixture, and only 36.44% for the negative controls. A well-formed basement membrane, well-differentiated epithelial cells, and regular thick keratinocytes lining the surface of the epidermal cells accompanied wound healing in rats treated with ESM, which was significantly better than in control rats. Conclusion: Ground hen ESM powder, a low-cost effective biomaterial, is better than Ulva lactuca or their mixture for preventing tissue damage and promoting diabetic wound healing, in addition to various biomedical applications. Dietary calcium supply is essential for bone development and egg production in laying hens. This study investigated the effects of low dietary calcium and lipopolysaccharide (LPS) induced immune challenge in aged laying hens. A total of thirty-two Hy-Line Brown laying hens at 80 weeks old with an average laying rate of 62% were randomly divided into two groups and fed a normal calcium diet (3.57% Ca, NCA) or low calcium diet (2.08% Ca, LCA). At 88 weeks, the experiment was designed using a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement, and hens were intraperitoneally injected with saline (SAL) or LPS (0.5 mg/kg, 0.5 mg/kg, or 1.5 mg/kg body weight) once every 48 h intervals over 5 days. Production performance, egg quality, and bone physiology were evaluated. Results showed that LPS challenge decreased the hen-day egg production, egg mass, and eggshell traits (p < 0.05), but increased (p < 0.05) the calcium content of the tibia compared to SAL-injected hens. LCA diet decreased (p < 0.05) the hen-day egg production, and eggshell traits such as weight, percentage, strength, and thickness compared to the NCA diet. LCA diet increased the serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity (p < 0.01) and tibial expression of ALP (p < 0.05) compared to NCA diet. LPS injection suppressed both the serum ALP activity (p < 0.05) and tibial expression of ALP (p < 0.001) compared to SAL injection. Furthermore, LPS injection increased (p < 0.05) the expression of both pro and anti-inflammatory cytokines in the spleen and tibia. The expression of cathepsin K (Cts K) and matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9) were downregulated by LPS injection (p < 0.001). Broken and shell-less egg production and calcium content of eggshell, as well as tibial mRNA expression of osteocalcin (Ocn), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) were affected by the interaction (p < 0.05) of diet and injection. Therefore, this study demonstrated that to certain extents, low dietary calcium and LPS challenge dysregulated bone homeostasis and metabolism, with detrimental effects on the performance and eggshell quality of aged laying hens. Nanoflake-assembled ZnWO4 yolk–shell microspheres (NFYM-ZnWO4) with a diameter of 1.5–2 μm and a wall thickness of about 300 nm have been rationally designed and prepared by a facile one-pot method, were composed of numerous nanoflakes (NFs) with a thickness of 10–15 nm and possessed large specific surface areas. The controlled experiments demonstrated that the novel NFYM-ZnWO4 were induced by the synergistic effects of ligands (L -aspartic acid, L -Asp) and mixed solvents (ethylene glycol, EG). Combined with the morphological evolution process, a rational mechanism was proposed to describe the nucleation, self-assembly and Ostwald ripening associated with the formation of NFYM-ZnWO4. Benefiting from yolk–shell features and large specific surface areas, the as-synthesized NFYM-ZnWO4 were evaluated as adsorbents. With a maximum adsorption capacity of 321.2 mg g−1, NFYM-ZnWO4 exhibited a high efficiency for Pb2+ removal in aqueous solution, which was over 5 times higher than the nanoparticle-assembled ZnWO4 yolk–shell microspheres (NPYM-ZnWO4). Simple Summary: This study explored the effects of the different dietary combinations of soyhulls and the β-mannanase enzyme on production performance, economics, egg quality, blood biochemicals, nutrient digestibility, and gut health in laying hens during the late peak production phase. Golden brown hens were fed different diets for four weeks, and the combination of 3% soyhulls and 30 mg/kg β-mannanase showed potential benefits. It improved production performance and increased egg weight, albumen weight, and height while significantly lowering total cholesterol, LDL, and VLDL levels. This combination also improved gut morphology and enhanced nutrient digestibility. Overall, the inclusion of 3% soyhulls and 30 mg/kg β-mannanase in the diet may have positive effects on production performance, nutrient digestibility, and gut health and potentially lower serum cholesterol levels in laying hens while maintaining acceptable egg quality. This study investigated the effects of the β-mannanase enzyme and soyhulls on production performance, economics, egg quality, hematology and serum biochemistry, nutrient digestibility, gut morphology, digesta viscosity, and excreta consistency in laying hens during the late peak production phase (37 to 40 weeks of age). Golden brown hens (RIR × Fayoumi; n = 200) were fed a control diet (no soyhulls or enzymes) and diets containing four combinations, i.e., 3% soyhulls with 20 mg/kg β-mannanase (D1), 3% soyhulls with 30 mg/kg β-mannanase (D2), 9% soyhulls with 20 mg/kg β-mannanase (D3), and 9% soyhulls with 30 mg/kg β-mannanase (D4), for four weeks in four replicates of 10 birds each. Overall, a significantly higher (p < 0.05) feed intake, weight gain, feed conversion ratio, and water intake were calculated in the D2 group as compared to the control and remaining combinations of soyhulls and β-mannanase. No mortality was recorded during the entire experiment. Economically, the D1 and D2 groups showed the best results as compared to the D3 and D4 groups. Egg quality parameters like egg weight, shell weight and shell thickness, yolk weight, albumen weight and height, and the Haugh unit remained unchanged (p > 0.05). Similarly, the D2 group showed significantly lower total cholesterol, LDL, and VLDL levels and enhanced gut morphology with greater villus width, height, crypt depth, and surface area across intestinal segments. Crude protein (CP), crude fiber (CF), crude fat, and ash digestibility were higher (p < 0.05) in the D1 and D2 groups compared to the control. Digesta viscosity, excreta consistency, and other egg quality parameters remained unaffected. Nanoflake-assembled ZnWO4 yolk–shell microspheres (NFYM-ZnWO4) with a diameter of 1.5–2 μm and a wall thickness of about 300 nm have been rationally designed and prepared by a facile one-pot method, were composed of numerous nanoflakes (NFs) with a thickness of 10–15 nm and possessed large specific surface areas. The controlled experiments demonstrated that the novel NFYM-ZnWO4 were induced by the synergistic effects of ligands (L -aspartic acid, L -Asp) and mixed solvents (ethylene glycol, EG). Combined with the morphological evolution process, a rational mechanism was proposed to describe the nucleation, self-assembly and Ostwald ripening associated with the formation of NFYM-ZnWO4. Benefiting from yolk–shell features and large specific surface areas, the as-synthesized NFYM-ZnWO4 were evaluated as adsorbents. With a maximum adsorption capacity of 321.2 mg g−1, NFYM-ZnWO4 exhibited a high efficiency for Pb2+ removal in aqueous solution, which was over 5 times higher than the nanoparticle-assembled ZnWO4 yolk–shell microspheres (NPYM-ZnWO4). To replace depleting freshwater resources, seawater, with its abundance and economy, has become a more favourable option for water electrolysis. However, seawater electrolysis necessitates electrocatalysts with excellent activity as well as resistance to Cl− corrosion. Herein, we utilized a biowaste, eggshell membranes, as a versatile platform to fabricate sulfide electrocatalysts for the oxygen revolution reaction (OER). Structural analyses including X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy tests indicated that the introduction of iron into the cobalt sulfide lattice greatly modified the structures of the sulfide. Electrochemical tests and operando electrochemical Raman spectroscopy showed that the introduction of Fe adjusted the electronic structure of Co9S8, facilitating the formation of Co4+ species, which serve as the major active sites for OER, thereby effectively improving the catalyst performance. The optimal Co8FeS8/ESM-900 sample can achieve a current density of 10 mA cm−2 in alkaline freshwater, simulated seawater, and natural seawater at overpotentials of 270, 271, and 324 mV, respectively, which are lower than the overpotentials of 273, 272, and 337 mV obtained from IrO2. The sulphate passivation layer formed during the OER process can effectively repel Cl−, leading to outstanding corrosion resistance. The Co8FeS8/ESM-900 catalyst can be continuously operated in seawater electrolysis for 200 000 s. A (−)Pt/C‖‖Co8FeS8/ESM-900(+) electrolyzer required only 1.629, 1.623, and 1.648 V to yield a current density of 10 mA cm−2 for the electrolysis of alkaline freshwater, simulated seawater, and natural seawater, respectively, which are superior to the performance of the (−)Pt/C‖‖IrO2(+) electrolyzer. The amniotic egg fulfils a critical role in reproduction by serving as an interface between the external environment and the embryo. Because non-avian reptiles are rarely incubated, they must be heated by, and absorb water from, the oviposition site for the developing embryo. The mechanisms by which they absorb sufficient, but not excess, water and how these mechanisms vary with local habitat is largely unknown, despite its significance to their evolution. Here, we first performed histology, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and dynamic vapor sorption experiments to elucidate the mechanisms of eggshell absorption for 56 reptile species. Then, we used phylogenetic comparative analysis to test the hypothesis that the absorptive capacity of reptile eggshells increases with aridity of the environment. We found that water absorption increases in the presence of a superficial mucopolysaccharide layer and decreases with increased calcium content. We found that eggs from arid environments have highly absorbent eggshells, but only in species with weakly calcified shells. Our results suggest that reptile eggshells have over evolutionary time tuned absorptive capacity to environmental moisture level. Since these eggs often must sustain conflicting constraints, they may serve as inspirations for new biomimetic materials, such as water filtering membranes or humidity sensors. The proportions in the size of the avian egg albumen, yolk, and shell are crucial for understanding bird survival and reproductive success because their relationships with volume and surface area can affect ecological and life history strategies. Prior studies have focused on the relationship between the albumen and the yolk, but little is known about the scaling relationship between eggshell mass and shape and the mass of the albumen and the yolk. Toward this end, 691 eggs of six precocial species were examined, and their 2-D egg profiles were photographed and digitized. The explicit Preston equation, which assumes bilateral symmetrical geometry, was used to fit the 2-D egg profiles and to calculate surface areas and volumes based on the hypothesis that eggs can be treated as solids of profile revolution. The scaling relationships of eggshell mass (Ms), albumen mass (Ma), and yolk mass (My), as well as the surface area (S), volume (V), and total mass (Mt) were determined. The explicit Preston equation was validated in describing the 2-D egg profiles. The scaling exponents of Ma vs. Ms, My vs. Ms , and My vs. Ma were smaller than unity, indicating that increases in Ma and My fail to keep pace with increases in Ms , and that increases in My fail to keep pace with increases in Ma. Therefore, increases in unit nutrient contents (i.e. the yolk) involve disproportionately larger increases in eggshell mass and disproportionately larger increases in albumen mass. The data also revealed a 2/3-power scaling relationship between S and V for each species, that is, the simple Euclidean geometry is obeyed. These findings help to inform our understanding of avian egg construction and reveal evolutionary interspecific trends in the scaling of egg shape, volume, mass, and mass allocation. The variation in egg quality parameters of traditional/native hen breeds with good freshness and antibacterial properties of egg albumen may determine the attractiveness of these eggs for modern consumers looking for high quality products. The objective of this study was to evaluate external and internal physical quality parameters and enzymatic activity of lysozyme of eggs from three traditional hens bred in Poland and to compare these egg quality parameters to those obtained from commercial hybrids kept under the same management conditions in extensive farming production system. The study was carried out on eggs collected from 4 genetic groups of hens, i.e. Polish Liliputy Bantams (PLB), native Polish Crested Chickens (PCr, CP-22 strain), Gold Laced Polish Chickens (GLP) and from Hy–Line Brown hybrids (HLB). In total 135 PLB, 75 PCr, 75 GLP and 75 HLB hens were kept on litter (3 pens) and fed commercial feed. The eggs (n = 33/genotype/age) were collected at the 33 and 55 weeks of age. The study concluded that with the age of the hens, there was an increase (P<0.05) in the weight of the egg and the proportion of its main fractions, as well as a decrease (P<0.05) in the quality parameters of the albumen and the eggshell. However the eggs from traditional breeds retain good parameters of albumen quality even at the end of production period. The eggs of traditional hens were characterized by higher (P<0.05) yolk proportion and its color and albumen lysozyme parameters, and a lower (P<0.05) eggshell and albumen height and Haugh unit score in relation to commercial hybrids. The highest (P<0.05) content of lysozyme and enzymatic activity of lysozyme were found in eggs from Gold Laced Polish Chickens. Thus, eggs obtained from traditional hens may meet requirements of modern consumers because of specific physical characteristics, good albumen lysozyme activity and freshness parameters. Particularly noteworthy are Polish Liliputy Bantams eggs, characterized by the low weight and a high proportion of more intensely colored yolk and good Haugh unit score at the end of production period. The study was conducted at Grdarasha field in Salahaddin University –Erbil during the period from 23 November 2021 to 5 January 2022, to determine the effect of using different calcium sources in a broiler diet on growth performance, blood parameters, bone characteristics, and immunity organs. Three hundred (300) chicks have randomly distributed into three (3) treatments following a completely randomized design (CRD). Five replications for each treatment, each replicate contains 20 birds. The dietary treatments include T1: control (0% eggshell), T2 and T3 increasing levels of eggshell powder as a replacement to limestone at 50% and 100%, respectively. The results showed no significant (P> 0.05) differences in broiler live body weight, body weight gain (BWQ), feed intake, feed conversation ratio, and mortality % among different weeks of experiments and different treatments used. The results of blood parameters did not note any significant variations among different treatment groups (P > 0.05) in TG, HDL, LDL and P, however, the significant differences (P < 0.01)was found in the Cholesterol, VLDL, and Calcium . Bone ash mainly consists of calcium and phosphorous, and their level of them differ significantly (P < 0.01) among the different treatments. Also, the results of the effect of dietary treatments on the broilers' bone properties indicated that no significant differences in bone length (cm), diaphysis diameter (mm), Lateral wall thickness (mm), Medial wall thickness (mm), Medullary canal diameter (mm), Tibiotarsal index. However, the significance was found in bone weight and bone-breaking strength which is considered to affect bone fractures in poultry. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of micelle silymarin (MS) supplementation on productive performance, egg quality, and blood biochemical parameters in laying hens. A total of 384 (Hy‐Line brown, 28‐week‐old) laying hens were randomly distributed into one of four dietary treatment groups (eight replication per treatment; 12 hens per replicate) for a 12‐week long feeding trial. Hens were fed a basal diet with the addition of 0%, 0.02%, 0.04%, and 0.06% of MS respectively. The results expressed that egg production percentage and egg weight were linearly (p < 0.05) enhanced at Weeks 0–6, 7–12, and 0–12, when 0%, 0.02%, 0.04%, and 0.06% of MS were added to laying hen diets. The feed conversion ratio and feed intake improved (p < 0.05) linearly at Weeks 0–6, 7–12, and 0–12 with increasing levels of MS supplementation in laying hens. The eggshell thickness and eggshell strength were linearly (p < 0.05) improved at weeks 4, 8, and 12 with an MS‐supplemented diet. Additionally, eggshell colour, Haugh unit, and albumin height had no significant (p > 0.05) difference throughout the experimental period with different levels of MS‐supplemented diet. The yolk colour of eggs showed significant (p < 0.05) differences at weeks 8 and 12 with levels of the MS‐supplemented diet. However, at the end of the trial, the blood profile indicated that cholesterol levels decreased (p < 0.05) linearly, and triglyceride levels showed a tendency to decrease (p < 0.10) with MS supplementation. In conclusion, increasing the level of MS addition in the laying hen diet improved the egg production percentage and egg quality, reducing cholesterol levels in Hy‐Line brown hens. A dose‐response experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of graded levels of dietary digestible threonine (dThr) during the first laying cycle on productive and reproductive performance, egg quality and immune responses of Japanese quail breeders (Coturnix coturnix japonica). Also, dThr requirements were determined based on nutrient dose‐response data. A total of 450 (360 females and 90 males) 11‐week‐old breeders were allocated to five increment (+0.03%) levels of dThr (0.49%, 0.52%, 0.55%, 0.58%, 0.61% and 0.64%) with five replicates per treatment and 15 (12 females and three males) birds each. The experiment lasted for 12 weeks. In response to increasing dietary dThr levels, egg production, egg mass, feed efficiency, egg specific gravity, eggshell relative weight, eggshell thickness, egg fertility (EF) and immune response against sheep red blood cell (SRBC) inoculation were improved with quadratic trends and egg hatchability as set eggs was improved with linear trends. Japanese quail breeders fed a diet with 0.58% dThr concentration (threonine/lysine ratio of 59%) showed the productive performance traits, EF, eggshell quality and immune response against SRBC inoculation in the highest values. However, feed intake, egg weight, egg albumen and yolk relative weight, egg shape index, haugh unit and egg composition were not affected by increasing dietary dThr level. Based on the broken‐line regression model, the dThr requirements to optimize productive performance, eggshell quality, EF and immune response against SRBC inoculation were estimated at 159−188, 169−183, 175 and 178 mg/bird per day, respectively. It is concluded, in the Japanese quail breeders during the first laying phase a daily dThr intake of 188 mg/bird, dietary dThr concentration at 0.58% (threonine/lysine ratio of 59%) is adequate for optimized productive and reproductive performance, eggshell quality and immune responses. Birds have evolved an astonishing diversity of egg pigmentation and this variation is driven by a complex interplay of proximate and ultimate factors. In ecological research, egg pigmentation is often measured at randomly selected points or regions of an eggshell, but it remains poorly explored whether and how spottiness and colouration are spatially consistent within a single egg. Here, we aimed to quantify consistency (repeatability) of spottiness patterns and background/spot colouration traits among the opposite lateral regions of an avian eggshell. For this purpose, we collected digital images of eggshells from three non-passerine birds showing different patterns of egg spottiness and colouration, i.e. Eurasian Coot Fulica atra, Black-headed Gull Chroicocephalus ridibundus, and Common Tern Sterna hirundo. We found an excellent within-egg repeatability (mean R > 0.90) of both background and spot colouration in all three species. In contrast, within-egg repeatability of spottiness traits was significantly lower, but the patterns of spatial variability were trait- and species-specific. While some spottiness traits showed relatively high within-egg repeatability (e.g. the total spot area), others were either poorly or moderately repeatable, depending on the species. Our results may have important practical implications for future research on eggshell colouration and spottiness, since measurements of reflectance spectra within a single region (side) are likely to be representative for the entire eggshell, while reliable characterisation of maculation may require replicate measurements across different eggshell regions. We recommend that the adaptive significance of spatial (within-egg) heterogeneity in avian eggshell pigmentation should be subject to further investigation under broader comparative framework. Sweet basil is very important in the culinary and pharmaceutical sectors because it contains volatile oils that have a variety of biological functions. Considering the economical costs and adverse effects of chemical fertilizers, attention has been turned to the use of ecofriendly and cost effective alternatives. In this regard, eggshells could be used as a natural calcium source for nutring the medicinal and aromatic plants. Therefore, the aim of this trial was to assess the productivity of sweet basil in response to different application methods of eggshells on sandy soil. In this study, eggshells were added to the soil at rates of 1, 2, and 3 g/pot, to foliage at rates of 0.5, 1, and 1.5 g/L, and to irrigation water at rates of 1, 2, and 3 g/L; a rate of 0.5 g/pot of calcium carbonate also used as a reference. Plants exposed to eggshells at 1.5 g/L foliar spray gave the maximum values of fresh and dry weights herb (172.11 and 23.48 g/plant), carbohydrates (36.74%), crude protein (16.56%), inhibition of free radical scavenging (47.61%), total phenols (15.03 mg/g), total flavonoids (2.87 mg/g), and essential oil contents (1.18% or 27.71 g/100 plants). On the other hand, plants subjected to eggshells at 0.5 g/L foliar spray produce the highest amounts of linalool (76.34%) and oxygenated monoterpenes (83.37%). The reuse of waste materials has recently become appealing due to pollution and cost reduction factors. Using waste materials can reduce environmental pollution and product costs, thus promoting sustainability. Approximately 95% of calcium carbonate-containing waste eggshells end up in landfills, unused. These eggshells, a form of bio-waste, can be repurposed as catalytic electrode material for various applications, including supercapacitors, after being converted into CaO. Similarly, used waste battery electrode materials pose environmental hazards if not properly recycled. Various types of batteries, particularly lithium-ion batteries, are extensively used worldwide. The recycling of used lithium-ion batteries has become less important considering its low economic benefits. This necessitates finding alternative methods to recover and reuse the graphite rods of spent batteries. Therefore, this study reports the conversion of waste eggshell into calcium oxide by high-temperature calcination and extraction of nanographite from spent batteries for application in energy storage fields. Both CaO and CaO/graphite were characterized for their structural, morphological, and chemical compositions using XRD, SEM, TEM, and XPS techniques. The prepared CaO/graphite nanocomposite material was evaluated for its efficiency in electrochemical supercapacitor applications. CaO and its composite with graphite powder obtained from used lithium-ion batteries demonstrated improved performance compared to CaO alone for energy storage applications. Using these waste materials for electrochemical energy storage and conversion devices results in cheaper, greener, and sustainable processes. The shell and membrane of the egg constitute approximately 11% of the whole egg and is an important food industry waste. Eggshells can be used as an additional source of calcium to the diet because of their low cost and high bioavailability. This study aimed to design and produce the optimum formulation for the gluten-free cake using eggshell powder as rice flour and baking powder replacer by Face-Centered Composite Design. According to the results, it was determined that the optimized formulation should contain 9.85% eggshell powder as a rice flour replacer and 32.78% eggshell powder as a baking powder replacer to obtain a gluten-free cake with a desirable profile in terms of hardness, specific volume, color ( L crust ∗ and L crumb ∗ values), ash content, calcium content, and overall acceptability. The gluten-free cake with eggshell powder obtained was characterized as a product rich in calcium, high in ash content, high in specific volume, with a brighter colour and good sensory acceptability. Also, the proximate properties of the gluten-free cake produced with the optimum formulation were also reported. Abstract Background Sustained drug delivery system (DDS) for clinically relevant osteosarcoma medications is a promising strategy for treatment. β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) microbeads loaded with doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOX) and cis-diamminedichloroplatin (CDDP) anticancer drugs in a matrix of hydroxyapatite-keratin-polyvinyl alcohol composite matrix scaffolds (HAp-K-PVA) was developed as promising DDS. HAp, β-TCP, and K utilized for the development of DDS were resourced from avian eggshells and human hairs, respectively, and duly characterized before application. Methods The β-TCP/alginate microbeads were fabricated using droplet extrusion and ionotropic gelation, and integrated into secondary drug carrier HAp-K-PVA composite matrix, via freeze gelation. The physicochemical and thermal characterization of developed microbeads and matrix scaffolds was performed. Results When DOX and CDDP were co-loaded in DDS, a synergistic impact was observed after 30 days of continuous release, in contrast to the immediate outburst as seen with individual DOX and CDDP releases. Besides, the drug release from the microbeads only, the release with the HAp-K-PVA composite matrix scaffolds was observed slower. The controlled release, antibacterial effectiveness against the test pathogens and cell viability with osteoblast-like osteosarcoma (UTOS) cells indicated the therapeutic potential for the treatment of osteosarcoma in situ. The cell viability was observed for 24 h, which showed nearly 90% after 24 h for HAp-K-PVA composite matrix scaffolds, decreased for all the scaffold groups after 72 h, indicating the enhancement due to combined synergistic effect of the co-loaded drugs. Conclusion This study established a promising foundation for novel and sustainable biomaterials for osteosarcoma treatment. Further advancement holds the potential to enhance patient clinical outcomes and foster advancements in the field of regenerative medicine.

The function of spargel / dPGC-1 in Drosophila oogenesis has been unequivocally established. Here, we sought to assess whether Spargel protein or RNA is essential for developmentally competent eggs. The trans-heterozygotic combination of two spargel mutant alleles allowed us to decrease Spargel expression to very low levels. Using this model, we now demonstrated the requirement for Spargel in eggshell patterning and embryonic development, which led us to establish that spargel is a maternal effect gene. Further examination of Spargel's potential mechanism of action in eggshell biogenesis revealed that low levels of Spargel in the adult ovary cause diminished Cyclin E activity, resulting in reduced chorion gene amplification levels, leading to eggshell biogenesis defects. Thus, another novel role for spargel/dPGC-1 is exposed whereby, through Cyclin E activity, this conserved transcriptional coactivator regulates the chorion gene amplification process. Utilizing Enzyme-Induced Calcium Carbonate Precipitation (EICP) reinforcement technology has emerged as an innovative approach for soil improvement. In this study, kitchen waste eggshell powder was used as an additive material for EICP. The high external surface area and affinity for calcium ions of eggshell powder, which render it a suitable nucleation site for calcium carbonate precipitation. Experimental results demonstrate that the incorporation of eggshell powder, by increasing the number of nucleation sites and promoting calcium carbonate precipitation, reduces the inhibition of enzyme products, modulates the precipitation pattern of calcium carbonate, improves particle size distribution, and consequently significantly enhances the unconfined compressive strength of the samples. Furthermore, a neutral pH is achieved within the reaction system without the addition of any acid, thus preventing significant ammonia emissions. Eggs are one of the low-cost sources of protein and are also perishable, so maintaining their internal quality during storage is particularly important. The current research was carried out with the aim of the effect of nanocomposite coating on the physicochemical changes of eggs during storage for 4 weeks. Uncoated eggs (control) and eggs treated with a two-component coating of polyvinyl alcohol/chitosan (PC), a three-component coating of polyvinyl alcohol/chitosan/montmorillonite (PCM) ), and PCM coatings incorporating concentrations of 2 and 4% garlic extract were evaluated in a total of 5 treatments and 3 replicates in a completely randomized design. The results showed that the concentration-dependent antimicrobial effect of garlic extract was higher against Staphylococcus aureus than Escherichia coli. The prepared films of active three-component PCM nanocomposite had greater thickness, higher tensile strength, and elasticity, lower solubility, less elongation at break, and lower water vapor permeability (p<0.05). At the end of 4 weeks of storage, the eggs coated with active three-component PCM nanocomposites had a thicker shell (0.400 mm) and a stronger shell (0.310 kg), causing less weight loss (About 4 %), Haugh unit (70.00) and yolk index (0.43) were higher and the lowest of total viable count bacteria (4.1 log cfu/ml). Therefore, using the three-component PCM nano-coating containing 4% garlic extract as a biodegradable packaging is possible to maintain the internal quality and eggshell and increase its storage time at ambient temperature. Nowadays, the use of natural wastes and adsorbents along with their modification by simple and new methods based on metal oxides to remove dye pollutants has been the focus of many researchers. In this study, for the first time, simple and low-cost modification of eggshell (EGS) with tungsten oxide (WO3) based on the photochemical modification method as a green, ultra-fast, cost-effective, and biodegradable adsorbent is reported to remove of methylene blue (MB) dye pollutant. The EGS modified by WO3 was investigated by EDX, EDX mapping, XRD, FE-SEM, and UV–Vis Diffuse Reflectance (DRS) analyses. The obtained results show that the modified EGS by WO3 has more than ten times (78.5%) the ability to remove MB dye pollutant within 3 min compared to bare EGS (11%). Various parameters including dye pollutant pH, dye concentration, adsorbent dosage, and reusability of the WO3/EGS adsorbent for removal of MB dye pollutant were investigated and the result show that the adsorbent capacity of WO3/EGS is 1.64 mg g−1. Having been successfully bred in semi-intensive and intensive aquaculture systems, oval squids of the Sepioteuthis lessoniana species complex are emerging as promising candidates for research and industry. Nevertheless, information about pathogens and diseases that may affect squid aquaculture remains sparse. In this study, we identify new parasitic copepod species that causes squid mortality and decreases squid hatching rates, and we also offer a solution to eliminate the pathogen during incubation of squid eggs. The newly discovered copepod Ikanecator primus gen. et sp. nov. was identified on oval squid eggs for the first time using both morphological and molecular diagnostic markers. In the genomes of the copepod and associated microbiome, we identified multiple genes for enzymes involved in cephalopod eggshell degradation in genomes of the copepod and associated microbiome. Furthermore, we conducted experiments to assess efficacy of peracetic acid in inhibiting the I. primus gen. et sp. nov. both in vitro and in vivo using immersion treatment. We established that a 2-min exposure to a concentration of 250 μl/L of peracetic acid containing product (PAA-product; 35 mg/L PAA and 15 mg/L H2O2) inhibited the development of nauplii in vitro. All parasites exposed to a concentration of 500 μl/L of PAA-product (70 mg/L PAA and 30 mg/L H2O2) were eliminated within two minutes. On top of this, the immersion treatment with 500 μl/L of PAA-product (70 mg/L PAA and 30 mg/L H2O2) improved survival of squid embryos and increased size of squid hatchlings compared with control and the immersion treatment with 125 μl/L of PAA-product (17.5 mg/L PAA and 7.5 mg/L H2O2) and the immersion treatment with 250 μl/L of PAA-product (35 mg/L PAA and 15 mg/L H2O2). Background: The breeding of layers emphasizes the continual selection of egg-related traits, such as egg production, egg quality and eggshell, which enhance their productivity and meet the demand of market. As the breeding process continued, the genomic homozygosity of layers gradually increased, resulting in the emergence of runs of homozygosity (ROH). Therefore, ROH analysis can be used in conjunction with other methods to detect selection signatures and identify candidate genes associated with various important traits in layer breeding. Results: In this study, we generated whole-genome sequencing data from 686 hens in a Rhode Island Red population that had undergone fifteen consecutive generations of intensive artificial selection. We performed a genome-wide ROH analysis and utilized multiple methods to detect signatures of selection. A total of 141,720 ROH segments were discovered in whole population, and most of them (97.35%) were less than 3 Mb in length. Twenty-three ROH islands were identified, and they overlapped with some regions bearing selection signatures, which were detected by the De-correlated composite of multiple signals methods (DCMS). Sixty genes were discovered and functional annotation analysis revealed the possible roles of them in growth, development, immunity and signaling in layers. Additionally, two-tailed analyses including DCMS and ROH for 44 phenotypes of layers were conducted to find out the genomic differences between subgroups of top and bottom 10% phenotype of individuals. Combining the results of GWAS, we observed that regions significantly associated with traits also exhibited selection signatures between the high and low subgroups. We identified a region significantly associated with egg weight near the 25 Mb region of GGA 1, which exhibited selection signatures and has higher genomic homozygosity in the low egg weight subpopulation. This suggests that the region may be play a role in the decline in egg weight. Conclusions: In summary, through the combined analysis of ROH, selection signatures, and GWAS, we identified several genomic regions that associated with the production traits of layers, providing reference for the study of layer genome. Reptilian (non‐avian) eggshell biomineralization is markedly different from avian eggshells. Despite discontinuous/variable mineralization, the reptilian eggshell (like in birds) is responsible for protective and developmental functions of the egg as part of a highly successful reproduction strategy. Using multiscale imaging and characterization methods including X‐ray and electron microscopy/tomography, a 3D overview of eggshell ultrastructure in the gekkotan Eublepharis macularius – the common leopard gecko is provided. Eggshell mineral is shown to be sensitive to aqueous preparations, where cryogenic methods are essential for accurate mineral and organic preservation. Interwoven with the mineral are underlying organic fibers involved in the formation of complex hierarchical order in the eggshell, including nucleation and growth of mineral. The calcitic mineral phase of the eggshell takes on three microstructural motifs at the shell surface: nodular scutes (≈40 µm), intermittent blunt or star‐shaped mineral rosettes (≈1 mm), and smaller mineral corollas (≈10 µm). Individual scutes have two hierarchical mineral structures – mineral nanospheres (≈500 nm) and mineral nanodomains (≈40 nm). Diverse and variable biomineralization features of reptilian eggshells likely reflect the importance of differences in ecology and physiology on egg formation, survival, and eggshell mechanics, and are likely related to hydration sensitivity, structural organic‐inorganic interactions, and mineral polymorphism. Eggshells are daily food waste disposed of in landfills, producing environmental issues and an unpleasant odour. Eggshells powder may be suitably applied as a filler in epoxy resins to improve their mechanical properties. The material properties and fracture energy of toughened epoxy with eggshell powder (TEEP) were measured and investigated. Dog-bone specimens were fabricated to investigate the mechanical properties of TEEP (i.e. elastic modulus, Poisson's ratios and tensile strength) and tested under quasi-static tensile loading. Double Cantilever Beam (DCB) and End-Notched Flexure (ENF) tests were used to determine the mode I and Mode II fracture energies of TEEP specimens, respectively. For this purpose, oven-dried eggshells were crushed into particles size of 100 µm. The volume fraction of eggshell powder as filler in TEEP is designated as 0%, 2.5%, 5%, and 10%. The epoxy resin system was made by mixing EPIKOTE Resin 828 and Hardener 651 with a mixing ratio of 5:2 by weight. The results showed that the tensile strength, elastic modulus, fracture energy in Mode I and Mode II were optimum at TEEP 5% with an enhancement of 36.8%, 24.9%, 60.3% and 166.3%, respectively compared to that of neat epoxy. This is due to better surface roughness and the ability of eggshell powder as a crack arrestor. However, TEEP with 10% eggshell prone to agglomeration of eggshell powder caused poor bonding with epoxy resin and affect the mechanical properties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative joint disease that mainly occurs due to the cellular inflammatory response and the destruction of joint cartilage. Natural eggshell membrane (NEM), a byproduct of egg processing, might be a promising knee OA treatment because of its anti-inflammatory properties and resemblance to synovial membrane components. Therefore, we aimed to study the anti-inflammatory effects of NEM in OA, utilizing both in vitro experiments with primary chondrocytes and in vivo studies with a surgical rat model of knee OA. In vitro studies showed that NEM treatment improved cell viability in chondrocytes exposed to interleukin-1α by upregulating chondrogenic genes and inhibiting enzymes that degrade the extracellular matrix (ECM). Furthermore, the anti-inflammatory effects of NEM were observed in chondrocytes induced by lipopolysaccharide. Administering NEM orally for 56 days after OA surgery resulted in enhanced joint swelling reduction and improved mobility in animal models, as well as an increase in bone density and cartilage compressive strength in a concentration-dependent manner. It inhibited inflammatory markers (5-lipoxygenase and prostaglandin E2) and extracellular matrix (ECM)-degrading enzymes (MMP-2 and MMP-9) in both the cartilage and synovium. Simultaneously, there was an upregulation in the expression of chondrogenic genes (Sox9, aggrecan, and Col-2). The histopathological and immunohistochemical analyses demonstrated that NEM's anti-inflammatory, anti-apoptotic, and chondrogenic properties contributed to the mitigation of joint degradation and synovial inflammation. Low‐density biopolyethylene (BioLDPE) ecocomposites added with particles of eggshell (ES) residue were produced using linear low‐density polyethylene grafted with maleic anhydride (LDPE‐g‐MA) as a compatibilizing agent. BioLDPE/ES and BioLDPE/ES/LDPE‐g‐MA compounds were processed in a twin‐screw extruder, and the specimens were injection molded. Torque rheometry increased and melt flow index reduced more prominently for the BioLDPE/LDPE‐g‐MA biocomposite with 20 phr ES, suggesting higher viscosity. Consequently, there was a higher level of ES particles breakdown, generating greater distribution and dispersion, as verified in optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy images. This finding was supported by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, considering the intense absorption band at 871 cm−1 for BioLDPE/ES (20 phr)/LDPE‐g‐MA biocomposite, indicating a higher level of ES particles dispersion in BioLDPE matrix. Therefore, BioLDPE/ES (20 phr)/LDPE‐g‐MA biocomposite increased the elastic modulus, tensile strength, Shore D hardness, and heat deflection temperature by 51.4%, 16.9%, 16.4%, and 14, 6%, respectively, related to BioLDPE. Additionally, the flexibility was kept as seen in the elongation at break and impact strength, including not fractured during the impact test. Reported results for the biocomposites are valuable mainly for the polymer additive sector, since the ES has the potential to improve BioLDPE properties, expanding the range of applications. This study investigated the effects of different doses of limestone, light durations, light intensities, and vitamins on both the productive performance and egg quality. The study utilized two rearing houses (control and treatment), each accommodating 75000 Lohmann Brown Classic chicks reared in open-sided rearing cages from one day old until they reached 89 weeks of age. Throughout the laying period, the hens were subjected to a specific light regimen (light = 14 h; dark = 10 h a day). At the end of experiment, the treatment group displayed significant (p<0.05) differences compared to the control group across various parameters. Notably, the treatment group exhibited lower daily feed intake (treatment: 112 g/bird vs control: 115 g/bird), 9.6% higher egg production (treatment: 78.5% vs control: 68.9%), lower body weight (treatment: 2057 g vs control: 2073 g), lower feed conversion ratio (FCR)/egg (treatment: 1.44 vs control: 1.69), higher egg weight (treatment: 69.4 g vs control: 68.5 g), greater egg mass (treatment: 56.14 vs control: 48.76), greater shell thickness (treatment: 3.52 mm vs control: 3.44 mm), and greater shell weight (treatment: 9.3 g vs control: 8.79 g). However, the albumin weight, yolk weight, yolk diameter, shape index, and Haugh units (HU) were not significantly (p˃0.05) affected after 75 weeks of treatment when compared with those of the control group. Therefore, this study is the first of its kind to demonstrate that different ratios of limestone, different durations and intensities of light, and different vitamin supplementation doses in the treatment group (subjected to the novel rearing recommendations described in this study) may yield a profit of 180,541 USD, exceeding the baseline profit of the control group (subjected to conventional rearing methods). Objective: This study aimed to assess the effects of dietary mulberry leaves on the growth, production performance, gut microbiota, and immunological parameters of poultry and livestock. Methods: The PubMed, Embase, and Scopus databases were systematically analyzed to identify pertinent studies up to December 2022. The effects of mulberry leaf diet was assessed using the weighted mean difference, and the 95% confidence interval was calculated using a random-effects model. Results: In total, 18 studies that sampled 2,335 poultry and livestock were selected for analysis. Mulberry leaves improved the average daily gain and reduced the feed/meat ratio in finishing pigs, and the average daily gain and average daily feed intake in chicken. In production performance, mulberry leaves lowered the half carcass weight, slaughter rate, and loin eye area in pigs, and the slaughter rate in chickens. Regarding meat quality in pigs, mulberry leaves reduced the cooked meat percentage, shear force, crude protein, and crude ash, and increased the 24 h pH and water content. In chickens, it increased the drip loss, shear force, 45 min and 24 h pH, crude protein, and crude ash. Mulberry leaves also affect the abundances of gut microbiota, including Bacteroides, Prevotella, Megamonas, Escherichia-Shigella, Butyricicoccus, unclassified Ruminococcaceae, Bifidobacterium, Lactobacillus, and Escherichia coli in poultry and livestock. Mulberry leaves at different doses were associated with changes in antioxidant capacity in chickens, and immune organ indexes in pigs. With respect to egg quality, mulberry leaves at different doses improved the shell strength, yolk color, eggshell thickness, and eggshell weight. However, moderate doses diminished the egg yolk ratio and the egg yolk moisture content. Conclusion: In general, dietary mulberry leaves improved the growth, production performance, and immunological parameters in poultry and livestock, although the effects varied at different doses. Our understanding of pre-Cretaceous dinosaur reproduction is hindered by a scarcity of evidence within fossil records. Here we report three adult skeletons and five clutches of embryo-containing eggs of a new sauropodomorph from the Lower Jurassic of southwestern China, displaying several significant reproductive features that are either unknown or unlike other early-diverging sauropodomorphs, such as relatively large eggs with a relatively thick calcareous shell formed by prominent mammillary cones, synchronous hatching and a transitional prehatching posture between the crocodilians and living birds. Most significantly, these Early Jurassic fossils provide strong evidence for the earliest known leathery eggs. Our comprehensive quantitative analyses demonstrate that the first dinosaur eggs were probably leathery, elliptical and relatively small, but with relatively long eggshell units, and that along the line to living birds, the most significant change in reptilian egg morphology occurred early in theropod evolution rather than near the origin of Aves. Species within the eutardigrade superfamily Macrobiotoidea are usually differentiated through their eggshell morphology. However, this trait can show very high intraspecific variability and, as consequence, species delimitation is challenging without molecular support. Although eggshell variability usually consists of small details, cases of species with very different egg morphotypes are known. Paramacrobiotus bifrons sp. nov. here described with an integrative approach, represents one of the species with extreme variability in eggshell morphology and it belongs to the areolatus group. The production by this gonochoric species of both areolatus-type and csotiensis-type eggs, the latter being rare in the group but most abundant in this species, was assessed by DNA barcoding, culturing, and inter-morphotype crosses. The reason underlying the production of two different eggshells resulted not related to tested culturing conditions, seasonality, or male's influence. Confocal (with and without staining), Light, and Scanning Electron Microscopies analyses of the two egg morphotypes laid by P. bifrons sp. nov. allowed to redescribe the csotiensis-type egg, shed light on its composition (excluding chitin as a component), and to find shared details supporting the belonging of the two egg morphotypes to the same species.
