Abstract

The recently developed quantum mechanical string+${}^3P_0$ model of polarized quark fragmentation with pseudoscalar and vector meson production has been implemented in a stand alone Monte Carlo program. The simulation enables the detailed study of the quark spin dependent effects in the fragmentation process such as the transverse spin asymmetries. In particular, it allows to investigate the effects of the production and decay of vector mesons on the Collins and dihadron asymmetries of the observed hadrons, and to study the still unknown Collins effect for vector mesons. The main results of the Monte Carlo simulations obtained so far are summarized and the comparison with the existing experimental data on SIDIS and $e^+e^-$ annihilation to hadrons processes are presented., 5 pages, 3 figures, Contribution to The 24th International Spin Symposium (SPIN2021)

Abstract

We present the main theoretical aspects of the quantum mechanical string+${}^3P_0$ model of polarized quark fragmentation for pseudoscalar and vector meson production. The model is an extension of the Lund string fragmentation model that systematically includes the quark spin degree of freedom assuming the ${}^3P_0$ mechanism of quark pair production at string breaking. The recently achieved introduction of vector mesons accounts for the spin correlations between the latter and the quark of the fragmentation chain. The string+${}^3P_0$ model reproduces transverse spin effects such as the Collins effect and the dihadron asymmetry, and longitudinal spin effects such as the jet handedness., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, Contribution to the 24th International Spin Symposium (SPIN-2021)

Abstract

This work reports the first observation of azimuthal asymmetries around the thrust axis in $e^+e^-$ annihilation of pairs of back-to-back charged pions in one hemisphere, and $\pi^0$ and $\eta$ mesons in the opposite hemisphere. These results are complemented by a new analysis of pairs of back-to-back charged pions. The $\pi^0$ and $\eta$ asymmetries rise with the relative momentum $z$ of the detected hadrons as well as with the transverse momentum with respect to the thrust axis. These asymmetries are sensitive to the Collins fragmentation function $H_1^{\perp}$ and provide complementary information to previous measurements with charged pions and kaons in the final state. In particular, the $\eta$ final states will provide additional information on the flavor structure of $H_1^{\perp}$. This is the first measurement of the explicit transverse-momentum dependence of the Collins fragmentation function from Belle data. Abstract

International audience; We describe a Monte Carlo code for the fragmentation of polarized quarks into pseudoscalar mesons. The quark jet is generated by iteration of the splitting q → h + q′ where q and q′ indicate quarks and h a hadron. The splitting function describing the energy sharing between q′ and h is calculated on the basis of the Symmetric Lund Model where the quark spin is introduced through spin matrices as foreseen in the 3 P 0 mechanism. A complex mass parameter is introduced for the parametrisation of the Collins effect. The results for the Collins analysing power and the comparison with the Collins asymmetries measured by the COMPASS collaboration are presented. For the first time preliminary results on the simulated azimuthal asymmetry due to the Boer-Mulders function are also given.

Abstract

The Sivers function describes the correlation between the transverse spin of a nucleon and the transverse motion of its partons. It was extracted from measurements of the azimuthal asymmetry of hadrons produced in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering of leptons off transversely polarised nucleon targets, and it turned out to be non-zero for quarks. In this letter the evaluation of the Sivers asymmetry for gluons in the same process is presented. The analysis method is based on a Monte Carlo simulation that includes three hard processes: photon-gluon fusion, QCD Compton scattering and leading-order virtual-photon absorption process. The Sivers asymmetries of the three processes are simultaneously extracted using the LEPTO event generator and a neural network approach. The method is applied to samples of events containing at least two hadrons with large transverse momentum from the COMPASS data taken with a 160 GeV/$c$ muon beam scattered off transversely polarised deuterons and protons.
