International remittances can increase the income of recipient households, and thus reduce their budget constraints. As such, they may enhance consumption and investment opportunities for family members that remain in the country of origin. This document analyzes the impact of international remittances on child labor and school attendance for children aged between 12 and 18 in Santiago de Cali, Colombia. Using a Propensity Score Matching (PSM) strategy, we find that children in remittance-receiving households are less likely to engage in market work, but no evidence that international remittances may influence school attendance. The results in this document emphasize the importance of remittance income to improve the welfare of children left behind, reducing their exposure to market work, which is one of the targets of the Sustainability and Development Goals.

With regard to the 100 years of the promulgation of the mandatory primary instruction law in Chile, it is intended to describe the background that led to the dictation of this law, explain the legislative development of it and understand the projections it has had. To carry out this study, a qualitative paradigm and historical methodology will be used, reviewing primary (original documents) and secondary sources (existing literature on the subject). It was found that there was a lot of resistance from conservative sectors to approve this important law, but eventually the arguments of liberal groups prevailed during the 20 years of discussion at Congress and in groups interested in the subject. The result of the promulgation of this law has meant that Chile has practically complete coverage in the school system and today has an average schooling about 10 years similar to Spain and Portugal.

Abstract (analytical) The purpose of this article is to describe the discontinuous processes that affect the school experiences of young people in relation to their attendance at a technical secondary school in the city of Rosario (Argentina). This problem has gained renewed public and academic interest due to the obligation of compulsory secondary education. The study was carried out using a socio-anthropological approach, drawing on the ethnographic tradition of Anthropology based on a critical perspective. The discontinuous educational processes that were identified can contribute to the interruption of schooling, specifically when students do not attend school for a prolonged period of time. This logic of discontinuity also crosses the experiences of those who continue with their studies.

Empirical results are presented from school-based interventions in three California counties that are pioneering participants in a carefully evaluated effort to create an innovative system of care for youth with severe emotional disturbance. Data are presented about the educational attendance and achievement of youth enrolled in clinical and academic programs designed to provide collaborative mental health and education services. Attendance levels were uniformly high. The youth were below expected grade level as measured by standardized tests at program admission. Across programs, two counties demonstrated grade level increases of one year or more for one year in school on all subscales of established measures of educational achievement. The third county demonstrated increases of slightly less than one year on two of three subscales of the educational achievement measures. These results are the first from a multisite demonstration of integrated education and mental health programs embedded within a broader system of care for youth. The findings, combined with those from our prior studies, illustrate that is possible to reduce and control placements in restrictive levels of care while improving the academic performance of a vast majority of the youth enrolled in specialized programs within the care systems. Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior This research is connected to Special Education Research Line of Post-Graduation Program in Education from Federal University of Santa Maria and is supported by Personal Improvement Coordination of Superior Level Capes. This study began from the approximation with the investigation object and the intention of better comprehension of lived environment. Thus, the objective is to verify how a Hospital Class in Santa Maria public hospital is structured and organized to educational attendance of special education scholar-patients, contributing to the accessibility in hospital environment. This research is delimited as qualitative of study case type, which observation of learning spaces and semi-structured interviews with the pedagogical coordinator, the students those work in Educational Sector, two mothers of scholars in health treatment are developed. To obtain more theoretical consistence, authors were explored, who approach Hospital Class, as Ceccim and Carvalho (1997), Fonseca (1999, 2015), Ortiz and Freitas (2005), Covic and Oliveira (2011), and works that bring the knowledge about accessibility and permeate this issue in educational context, as assistive technologies, adaptions of architecture, communication and attitudes, pedagogical and curriculum alterations as explained by Manzini (2007, 2014), Sankako, Oliveira, Manzini (2007); Deliberato (2007); Bersch (2013), Gonçalves (2013), Rocha (2013). Data found were treated by contents analysis, according Bardin (2011). Data shown that two boys received educational attendance between 2014 and 2015: a student with low vision and other with giftedness. It was verified that there were pedagogical and attitudinal accessibility on educational attendance of both scholars. So, the necessary materials for this student learning, the necessary adaptions, as well as curriculum and flexible practices were available. Although, the scholar with low vision do not demonstrates much interest about teach-learning, educational professionals always were available for this attendance. With respect to the scholar with giftedness, he was stimulated according his interests, developing his abilities in linguistics area, which resulted in written and publication of poesy book. Nevertheless, it was observed deficient aspects in relation of architectonic accessibility and communication inside hospital space, needing adaptions and more recourse to attend physical, audition and visual deficiencies. Professionals appointed the need of specific formation for these public due to Pedagogy course disciplines do not offers issues necessary for this attendance. Other aspect mentioned was the lack of incentive from government public sector about the offer of recourse and availability of special educator collaborating in hospital class sector. Although some aspects have been positive in relation to the educational attendance, it is necessary a reflection about improvements to promote the accessibility inside this hospital. It is hoped this work contribute to the universe of academic research about accessibility and, mainly, put questions and suggests that confirm the developed work with special education scholars in Hospital Class.

Attendance and y Desertion in Secondary Schools on Rural Areas in PeruThe main objective of the study is to identify the determinants of the decision to attend (or desert) secondary schools in rural areas in Peru. The study is based in information collected through surveys applied to adolescent students and deserters of rural areas living in towns with schools and without secondary schools in order to identify and estimate the effects of supply and demand side determinants on the decision to continue or not studying. Results show that the differences between students and school deserters are mainly associated to demand factors, that supply factors are not very important, and that there are no significant differences between the profile of the adolescents of towns with school and those living in towns without a secondary school. The adolescents’ decision to continue attending secondary school is mainly determined by their work status, academic performance, perception about quality of education supply, domestic work, gender and family situation (relations with parents, parents and children). In addition, according to the estimations, adolescents living in towns where secondary schools are not available have the same probability of attending school than their pairs from towns with schools. Keywords: Desertion attendance, rural secondary school.
