China’s leadership, under Xi Jinping, has initiated a significant strategic shift toward a "fortress economy" designed to bolster national self-sufficiency and resilience against external shocks, and ultimately allow the nation to withstand “extreme situations” including protracted armed conflict. This paper provides a comprehensive analysis of the evolution of China’s fortress economy policy, tracing its roots from early warnings about international instability to its formalization in China’s 14th Five-Year Plan and subsequent policy actions. By examining official speeches, policy documents, and strategic initiatives, the paper explains how the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is operationalizing this strategy through key domains such as food security, energy independence, and critical supply-chain resilience. The analysis highlights the CCP’s perception of an increasingly hostile international environment, prompting a paradigm shift that prioritizes national security and economic self-reliance. This research contributes to understanding China’s strategic intentions and provides a foundation for further exploration of the implications of China’s fortress economy on global economic and geopolitical dynamics.

How can employers facilitate economic mobility for workers, particularly workers of color or those without a college degree? The authors integrate a fragmented literature to assess how employers' practices affect enhanced economic security and mobility. This article first identifies three pathways linking employers' practices to mobility: improving material job quality, increasing access to better jobs for historically marginalized workers, and promoting sustainability of employment. The authors provide a critical assessment of the research literature on recruitment and hiring practices; pay and wages; promotion practices; scheduling; leaves; diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives; and work systems as these practices relate to economic mobility. In the context of geopolitical tensions and the war in Ukraine, security issues are of paramount importance. However, it is clear that security is not limited to military and technical aspects. The country's socio-economic development is also an important component of security. The article examines the socio-economic aspects of security agreements signed by Ukraine with other partner countries. The key challenges and opportunities related to the implementation of socio-economic provisions of security agreements are identified. The key factors influencing the implementation of socioeconomic provisions of security agreements are identified. The effectiveness of existing mechanisms of cooperation between Ukraine and other partner countries in the socio-economic sphere is assessed. In particular, it was noted that the bilateral security cooperation agreements that Ukraine is currently signing include commitments from partner countries to support us both on the battlefield and in economic terms. At the same time, these agreements also set out Ukraine's commitments to preserve and develop democratic institutions, including reforming the administrative and judicial systems, fighting corruption, ratifying the Rome Statute, and introducing specific legislative changes that support the pursuit of democracy, respect for human rights and media freedom. It is stated that the concluded bilateral agreements are only the first step towards Ukraine's real security. Their signatories recognize the importance of Ukraine's security for the whole of Europe and deterring Russia by making long-term commitments. The war has demonstrated that both Ukraine and its partners need to develop new and strengthen existing capabilities to counter the Russian threat. The agreements pave the way for long-term security cooperation and economic partnership. Their competent implementation can bring Ukraine much closer to winning the war and becoming a member of NATO and the EU. This article is one of the first studies of the socio-economic aspects of Ukraine's security agreements with other countries. The study assesses the impact of these agreements on economic development, social protection and welfare of the Ukrainian population. Based on the results of the study, the author provides recommendations for improving Ukraine's socio-economic cooperation with other countries in the framework of implementation of the provisions of security a greements. The results obtained can be used to develop state policy in the field of security, economy and social policy. The article covers the issue of ensuring food security of the state, through the prism of guaranteeing labor rights of agricultural employees. Proper protection of the labor rights of agricultural employees will help to increase the level of their social protection and contribute to the stable development of the agricultural sector of Ukraine. The basic concepts that would combine various aspects of the legal status of agricultural employees into a single concept are analyzed in detail. We have analyzed the following criteria for classification of employees of agricultural enterprises in Ukraine: by functional responsibilities, by qualification level, which confirms the ability to perform tasks and responsibilities of the relevant work, by the form of employment, by the organizational and legal form of the economy, by specialization, by age and gender characteristics. It is established that agricultural employees in Ukraine are not a homogeneous group, and their legal status may vary depending on socio-economic conditions. The main professions in agriculture are investigated, it is proved that skilled agricultural employees have professions that provide knowledge necessary for agricultural production, and their professional tasks are to grow crops. The concept that the basic rights and freedoms enshrined in the Constitution of Ukraine are distributed equally to agricultural employees, regardless of the organizational and legal forms of enterprises in which they work is analyzed. The criteria for determining enterprises, institutions and organizations that are important for the national economy in the field of agriculture in a special period are investigated. It has been found that the criteria for determining agricultural enterprises for booking their employees from mobilization in Ukraine may include various aspects that ensure the continuous activity of the agricultural sector, especially in conditions of martial law. It has been concluded that the reservation of employees of agricultural enterprises from mobilization should be based on an integrated approach that takes into account both economic and social, strategic and defensive aspects. The article emphasises that in the context of a full-scale war and economic crisis, protection of Ukraine's leading industries becomes one of the state's priority tasks. Not only the economic independence of the country, but also its defence capability depends on the preservation and development of these industries. The article identifies the leading industries of Ukraine that require priority protection. The main risks and threats to these industries are analysed. A set of priority measures to protect the leading industries has been developed, including financial support, tax and customs benefits, state guarantees, creation of a favourable investment climate, technology modernisation and innovation, and protection of intellectual property. The implementation of the proposed measures will definitely contribute to strengthening the country's economic security and, accordingly, its defence capability. It is emphasised that in the context of globalisation and competition in international markets, it is extremely important to ensure the sustainability and competitiveness of key production sectors, including energy, machine building, and heavy industry. National priorities in this area should include the development and implementation of effective protection strategies, modernisation of the technological base, improvement of product quality, creation of a favourable investment climate and ener gy security. The author suggests that analysis of innovation trends, study of international experience and introduction of advanced technologies are key aspects of development and protection of leading industries. An effective system of intellectual property protection, implementation of effective cybersecurity and information security measures, and support of state programmes for the development of production capacities contribute to strengthening the protection of import ant sectors of the economy. The author concludes that studying and analysing the problems of protecting Ukraine's leading industries and developing national priorities in this regard are important tasks for ensuring the sustainability and competitiveness of the country's economy in the current conditions of geopolitical and economic challenges, as well as for the post-war reconstruc tion of the state. ABSTRACT Through a systematic literature review of 42 recent peer‐reviewed empirical studies of international arms markets, this paper examines the determinants of supply and demand for manned fixed‐wing combat aircraft in the post–Cold War era. This literature review distinguishes more than 80 different determinants related to either the international system interaction, an international state or the aircraft offered. The determinants can be related to the main characteristics of the market, namely, security, economics and normative values. Measurable effects are only visible for security and economic determinants. Normative factors appear to play a rudimentary role across the board, although they can be found to be significant in individual studies. One conclusion that can be drawn is that the most commonly studied determinants are not those with the greatest impact. In addition, it is important to note that all but a few of the publications analysed do not address the difference in market power between a producing and a supplying (reselling) state. Sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) is a crucial crop for food security and economic stability in many regions, including Costa Rica. This study aimed to assess the prevalence and genetic diversity of two major viruses associated with sweet potato virus disease (SPVD) in Costa Rica: sweet potato feathery mottle virus (SPFMV) and sweet potato chlorotic stunt virus (SPCSV). A total of 50 leaf samples displaying typical viral disease symptoms were collected from major sweet potato‐growing regions. Using multiplex reverse transcription (RT)‐PCR, SPFMV was detected in 82% of the samples and SPCSV in 52%, with a coinfection rate of 48%. Genetic analysis revealed that SPFMV isolates belonged predominantly to phylogenetic group B, while SPCSV isolates clustered with the West African (WA) strain. The low genetic diversity within these viral populations suggests a limited number of initial infection events followed by local spread. Riboprobe technology was evaluated as an alternative to RT‐PCR for virus detection. While the riboprobes for SPFMV demonstrated sensitivity comparable to RT‐PCR, the SPCSV riboprobes showed slightly lower sensitivity, particularly when using crude leaf extracts. Despite this, riboprobes offer significant advantages in terms of cost and ease of use for large‐scale screening. Our findings underscore the need for robust diagnostic and management strategies to control SPVD and highlight the importance of continuous monitoring and research to mitigate the impact of viral diseases on sweet potato production in Costa Rica. It is indicated in a legal state, regulation of interaction between members of society, coordination of their interests and smoothing of conflicts arising between them and their associations is unthinkable without law. With the help of the influence of law on social relations, it is possible to order and regulate them in a civilized manner. In the sphere of achieving a state of security, the law allows you to set the limits of what is permitted, to determine the obligations and prohibitions in the behavior of the relevant subjects. Due to regulatory legal regulation, security receives a unique meaning that determines the final goal of its provision, connects it with national priorities and interests of each legal entity, preventing blurring of the understanding of the essential characteristics of the basic category «national security» and its derivatives. The conducted scientific analysis of the legal regulation of the economic security system of Ukraine made it possible to conclude that it has a complex and multifaceted nature, that is, it involves the creation of a complex of legal, economic and administrative-organizational mechanisms aimed at ensuring the rights of citizens and other subjects of economic activity to protect private property, economic freedom and unimpeded implementation of economic and other economic activities. It is pointed out that the state should implement the appropriate organizational and legal provision of economic security of Ukraine, aimed at increasing the investment attractiveness of the country, eliminating offenses in the economic sphere. The analysis of regulatory legal acts made it possible to single out the following shortcomings of the legal provision of economic security of Ukraine: complexity, vagueness and inconsistency of individual legislative norms, ambiguous interpretation in their application; inconsistency between developers and lack of system of legal acts regulating economic security. It was concluded that the presence of such shortcomings indicates the need to modify approaches to the formation of legal support for the economic security of the state, to make changes to the current legislation. The large-scale storage and stable supply of oil products are essential for national energy security and economic development. As the economy expands and energy demands rise, centralized storage and supply systems become increasingly vital for ensuring the efficiency and reliability of oil product distribution. However, large oil storage depots present substantial safety risks. In the event of fires, explosions, or other accidents, emergency response efforts face stringent demands and challenges. To enhance the emergency response capabilities of oil storage and transportation bases (OSTBs), this paper proposes an innovative approach that integrates the improved analytic hierarchy process (IAHP) with the Entropy Weight Method (EMW) to determine the combined weights of various indices. This approach reduces the subjective bias associated with the traditional analytic hierarchy process (AHP). The emergency response capabilities of OSTBs are subsequently evaluated through fuzzy comprehensive analysis. An empirical study conducted on an OSTB in the Zhoushan archipelago quantitatively assesses its emergency preparedness. The results show that the base excels in pre-incident prevention, demonstrates robust preparedness and response capabilities, and exhibits moderate recovery abilities after incidents. These findings provide a theoretical foundation for reducing the likelihood of accidents, enhancing emergency response efficiency, and mitigating the severity of consequences. Social Impact Statement: Cassava is a vital food source for millions worldwide, crucial for food security and economic stability. This study analyzed cell wall polysaccharides in cassava roots to understand their impact on cooking properties. We found these polysaccharides influence the textural attributes of cassava roots, essential for both cooking and consumption. The research highlights the need to further identify and analyze cassava cell wall components. By improving our understanding of these components, we can improve food security, affordability, and resilience in diverse regions, ultimately contributing to global food security and better aligning with consumer preferences. Summary: The textural attributes of cassava roots significantly influence preferences in cooking and consumption as a food source, yet the specific components dictating these properties remain unclear. We aimed to identify the factors shaping the cooking properties of cassava roots.We conducted a compositional analysis of 22 traits in a diverse F1 biparental population derived from soft‐ and hard‐boiling progenitors. The traits encompassed cooking qualities, starch properties, and cell wall composition.Specific cell wall components including cellulose, xylan, un‐esterified, and methyl‐esterified homogalacturonan (HG) demonstrated a correlation with cooking quality attributes: sensory assessments related to texture (SAT) and water absorption during boiling (WAB). Correlation and regression analyses revealed that these wall components collectively contribute to 20% of SAT variability and 14% of WAB variability. SAT appeared to be influenced by methyl‐esterified and un‐esterified HGs, xylan, and cellulose, impacting the tensile strength of the cell wall. Conversely, WAB appeared to be associated with methyl‐esterified HG, potentially altering water absorption properties. Although genome‐wide association studies (GWAS) were unable to identify significant SNPs for SAT and WAB, notable associations emerged for cellulose, xylan, and un‐esterified‐ and methyl‐esterified HG. Candidate genes associated with these SNPs point towards diverse cell wall‐related proteins, transcription factors, sugar metabolism‐related genes, and glycosyl hydrolases.This study provides insights into the relationship between cassava root compositions and cooking characteristics and the role of wall components in determining the cooking quality of edible cassava. China's Great Firewall was designed to control information flows to keep citizens in and the wider world out. Consequently, until recently China's economic ascendancy was not mirrored in the global digital economy. However, China's increasing digital footprint and championing of national technology firms present numerous economic and security challenges for the EU and US as the dominant digital powers. This paper investigates how growing perceptions of China-based threats in the digital domain have shaped EU (including Member State-level) and US policies. Two pertinent cases – Huawei (hardware provider) and TikTok (digital platform) – illustrate how threat perceptions have catalysed securitization moves to restrict Chinese firms' roles within national digital economies. Western policymakers are increasingly concerned about China's capacity to weaponize technologically interdependent relationships by exploiting its firms' presence within Western networks. Do UN missions reduce forced displacement? Facing insecure environments, civilians are left with three choices: staying; moving to a safer community; or moving outside their country. Their aspiration and ability to move depend on individual characteristics and macro-level factors, such as the social, economic and political context in which these people live. Research shows that UN missions can impact and reset the macro-level context altered by war, especially in the security and economic domain. However, we lack empirical evidence on whether this impact helps UN peacekeeping tackle forced displacement and returns. This article offers the first global analysis of whether and how UN missions can shape aggregate population movements during civil wars. We combine data on outflows and returns of refugees and internally displaced people (IDPs) with data on distinct UN missions' features that we expect to affect population movements, namely the size of their contingents and their mandated tasks. Using matched samples, we find that the unfolding of the outflows and inflows processes are affected by different features of UN missions. Sizeable deployments decrease IDPs flows and encourage their return; refugee outflows, on the other hand, may increase in presence of UN missions. Furthermore, missions with displacement-related mandates are associated with decreasing IDP flows overall, but only encourage refugees' returns. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study provides a longitudinal analysis of the strong decline in trust in the government in the Netherlands during the corona pandemic in 2020/2021. At the start of the pandemic, 69 per cent of the Dutch population had (much) trust in the government. One and a half year later this was declined to only 29 per cent. Using multilevel regression we studied individual level differences in both the level of trust and the degree of decline during the corona pandemic. We found various differences in the level of trust, particularly a strong effect of education: higher and intermediate educated people have more trust than lower educated respondents. All time varying variables also correlated with trust: the more people have troubles with making ends meet, have health problems and the higher their discontent with corona policies, the lower their trust in the government. Perceived threat by COVID increases trust in the government. Surprisingly, we found no individual differences in the decline of trust. Irrespective of their education, migration background or other characteristics, the decline in trust during the corona pandemic is more or less the same for all respondents. However, we found that the average development of trust is related with several time varying variables. There is a clear relation between the steep decline in trust and the growing discontent with corona policies. The decline in trust is also related to the perceived threat of the virus. Particularly in the later phase of the pandemic, both the perceived threat and the level of trust dropped. The average development of trust seemed not related to economic security and health problems during the pandemic. Although the perceived health remained rather constant during the pandemic and respondents experienced less problems with making ends meet, partly because the extensive economic support of the Dutch government, the level of trust in the government nevertheless fell. Background: Traditionally, poverty assessment has relied on a single income criterion, which is inadequate in contexts where absolute poverty has been mitigated. This study developed a weighting scheme for the Multidimensional Health Poverty Index (MHPI) based on sustainable livelihood framework (SLF), aimed at enhancing the accuracy of poverty identification in China. Methods: A two-round Delphi process was used to determine the indicators of the index system. The weight of each indicator was calculated using the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) method. The multidimensional poverty index incorporates SLF's five dimensions: financial, natural, physical, social, and human capital. Results: The initial 46 indicators formed an indicator pool for the Delphi questionnaire. Based on the final consensus of the expert panel, the Delphi consultation resulted in an index system comprising six first-level and 23 second-level indicators. The weight values of the first-level indicators (economic security, health status, education, social capital, healthcare utilisation, and living conditions) were 0.2715, 0.2593, 0.0855, 0.0657, 0.1812, and 0.1363, respectively. Conclusion: This study established a scientific and effective index to evaluate generate weight for estimating multidimensional health poverty in China. Economic security, health status, and healthcare utilisation are the most crucial aspects of multidimensional health poverty. Wheat is one of the important food crops in the world, and the stability and growth of wheat production have a decisive impact on global food security and economic prosperity. Wheat counting is of great significance for agricultural management, yield prediction and resource allocation. Research shows that the wheat ear counting method based on deep learning has achieved remarkable results and the model accuracy is high. However, the complex background of wheat fields, dense wheat ears, small wheat ear targets, and different sizes of wheat ears make the accurate positioning and counting of wheat ears still face great challenges. To this end, an automatic positioning and counting method of wheat ears based on FIDMT-GhostNet (focal inverse distance transform maps - GhostNet) is proposed. Firstly, a lightweight wheat ear counting network using GhostNet as the feature extraction network is proposed, aiming to obtain multiscale wheat ear features. Secondly, in view of the difficulty in counting caused by dense wheat ears, the point annotation-based network FIDMT (focal inverse distance transform maps) is introduced as a baseline network to improve counting accuracy. Furthermore, to address the problem of less feature information caused by the small ear of wheat target, a dense upsampling convolution module is introduced to improve the resolution of the image and extract more detailed information. Finally, to overcome background noise or wheat ear interference, a local maximum value detection strategy is designed to realize automatic processing of wheat ear counting. To verify the effectiveness of the FIDMT-GhostNet model, the constructed wheat image data sets including WEC, WEDD and GWHD were used for training and testing. Experimental results show that the accuracy of the wheat ear counting model reaches 0.9145, and the model parameters reach 8.42M, indicating that the model FIDMT-GhostNet proposed in this study has good performance. Collaborative conservation interventions based on engagement with local communities are increasingly common, especially for large carnivores that negatively impact people's livelihoods and well‐being. However, evaluating the effectiveness of large‐scale community‐based conservation interventions is rarely done, making it problematic to assess or justify their impact. In our study focused on snow leopards (Panthera uncia) in five countries, we show that bespoke and well‐implemented community‐based and conflict management intervention efforts can lead to more sustainable conservation outcomes. Collaborative interventions, spread over about 88,000 km2 of snow leopard habitat, reduced livestock depredation and disease and associated economic costs. Additionally, they generated conservation‐linked livelihoods and enhanced community decision‐making, leading to more positive behavioral intent toward snow leopards and improved communities’ cooperation, economic security, and confidence. Our results provide lessons learned and recommendations for practitioners and governments to alleviate conflicts and foster coexistence with snow leopards and large carnivores more broadly. These include prioritizing locally led tailored solutions based on the PARTNERS principles, recognizing local community rights in conservation decision‐making, and recognizing the role of social norms in ensuring accountability. As one of the world's most crucial food crops, maize plays a pivotal role in ensuring food security and driving economic growth. The diversification of maize variety breeding is significantly enhancing the cumulative benefits in these areas. Precise measurement of phenotypic data is pivotal for the selection and breeding of maize varieties in cultivation and production. However, in outdoor environments, conventional phenotyping methods, including point cloud processing techniques based on region growing algorithms and clustering segmentation, encounter significant challenges due to the low density and frequent loss of point cloud data. These issues substantially compromise measurement accuracy and computational efficiency. Consequently, this paper introduces a Constrained Region Point Cloud Phenotyping (CRPCP) algorithm that proficiently detects the phenotypic traits of multiple maize plants in sparse outdoor point cloud data. The CRPCP algorithm consists primarily of three core components: (1) a constrained region growth algorithm for effective segmentation of maize stem point clouds in complex backgrounds; (2) a radial basis interpolation technique to bridge gaps in point cloud data caused by environmental factors; and (3) a multi-level parallel decomposition strategy leveraging scene blocking and plant instances to enable high-throughput real-time computation. The results demonstrate that the CRPCP algorithm achieves a segmentation accuracy of 96.2%. When assessing maize plant height, the algorithm demonstrated a strong correlation with manual measurements, evidenced by a coefficient of determination R2 of 0.9534, a root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.4835 cm, and a mean absolute error (MAE) of 0.383 cm. In evaluating the diameter at breast height (DBH) of the plants, the algorithm yielded an R2 of 0.9407, an RMSE of 0.0368 cm, and an MAE of 0.031 cm. Compared to the PointNet point cloud segmentation method, the CRPCP algorithm reduced segmentation time by more than 44.7%. The CRPCP algorithm proposed in this paper enables efficient segmentation and precise phenotypic measurement of low-density maize multi-plant point cloud data in outdoor environments. This algorithm offers an automated, high-precision, and highly efficient solution for large-scale field phenotypic analysis, with broad applicability in precision breeding, agronomic management, and yield prediction. This crucial sector faces various influences, including infectious and nutritional diseases. Certain minerals function as essential nutrients, playing a main role in processes across all aquatic animals when present in appropriate dietary proportions. Studies showed that some heavy metals serve as a catalyst for various biological functions, including the maintenance of colloidal systems, acid-base balance, bone formation, and the regulation of fundamental natural elements such as vitamins, hormones, and minerals. Fish acquire essential elements crucial for their well-being through both diet and water sources. Adequate levels of essential elements, such as iron, zinc, copper, cobalt, manganese, and selenium, in the diet contribute to enhanced growth, increased survival rates, improved disease resistance, and heightened specific immunity in fish. When incorporated in appropriate quantities, these elements play a pivotal role in disease prevention, fostering the production of high-quality fish, minimizing economic losses, and solidifying aquaculture as a robust and profitable industry. This article aims to delve into the immunological effects induced by metal elements, specifically copper (Cu), cobalt (Co), manganese (Mn), zinc (Zn), and selenium (Se), in diverse fish species. The objective is to underscore the significance of this exploration, paving the way for the development of more potent immune supplements in the future. Objective: Learning Health Systems (LHSs) have not directly informed evidence‐based policymaking. The Translation‐to‐Policy (T2P) Learning Cycle aligns scientists, end‐users, and policymakers to support a repeatable roadmap of innovation and quality improvement to optimize effective policies toward a common public health goal. We describe T2P learning cycle components and provide examples of their application. Methods: The T2P Learning Cycle is based on the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Office of Research and Development and Quality Enhancement Research Initiative (QUERI), which supports research and quality improvement addressing national public health priorities to inform policy and ensure programs are evidence‐based and work for end‐users. Incorporating LHS infrastructure, the T2P Learning Cycle is responsive to the Foundations for Evidence‐based Policymaking Act, which requires U.S. government agencies to justify budgets using evidence. Results: The learning community (patients, providers, clinical/policy leaders, and investigators) drives the T2P Learning Cycle, working toward one or more specific, shared priority goals, and supports a repeatable cycle of evidence‐building and evaluation. Core T2P Learning Cycle functions observed in the examples from housing/economic security, precision oncology, and aging include governance and standard operating procedures to promote effective priority‐setting; complementary research and quality improvement initiatives, which inform ongoing data curation at the learning system level; and sustainment of continuous improvement and evidence‐based policymaking. Conclusions: The T2P Learning Cycle integrates research translation with evidence‐based policymaking, ensuring that scientific innovations address public health priorities and serve end‐users through a repeatable process of research and quality improvement that ensures policies are scientifically based, effective, and sustainable. Upper‐middle‐class Chinese families send children to the United States for high school to exit what some perceive as an 'unhappy' educational environment in China or in pursuit of a 'better education' in the United States. However, for some students, the American high school experience itself may be marked by 'unhappiness', endured in the pursuit of 'success'. Based on ethnographic interviews with Chinese youth attending private American high schools, this study illustrates how narratives of unhappiness surrounding such transnational educational choices result in multiple success frames among students, categorized as 'pragmatists' and 'rebels'. Those who downplay happiness or experience unhappiness in the US context tend to adopt the 'pragmatic' frame, while those emphasizing their exit from an 'unhappy' situation are more likely to align with the 'rebel' frame. Despite slight deviations from parental expectations, the relative economic security of these families enables Chinese youth to develop ambivalent success frames based on their familiarity with both US and Chinese contexts, questioning the dominance of a singular success narrative. How does the receipt of remittances affect the likelihood of engaging in civic and political activities in the Middle East and North Africa? Research in Latin America and Africa has found two contradictory effects. Remittances can increase recipients' capacity for political participation by providing them with greater economic resources. But remittances may also reduce the incentive for political participation by lessening the importance of the domestic economy to the livelihood of recipients. Using survey data from Arab Barometer, I show that remittances are associated with a greater likelihood of engaging in non-electoral political activities, including protests, strikes and contacting elected officials, and (to a smaller extent) with electoral participation. To explore the relationship between remittances and political participation in greater depth, I report the results of interviews with 54 remittance-receiving families in Jordan and Tunisia. This qualitative evidence suggests that the greater relative economic security offered by remittances allows recipients to devote more resources, particularly time, to civic and political participation. The interviews also revealed a strong conditioning effect of gender: women are more likely to use remittances to donate time and money to non-political civil society organisations, while men are more likely to use remittances to conduct explicitly political activities. The article addresses a two-fold question: first, why does the French state invest so much time and resources in its Indian Ocean islands, Mayotte and Réunion? And why do these ultra-marine regions remain wedded to the French Republic? The high degree of insular buy-in both regions involves a two-level game, connecting state and island actors. Such turning to mainland France represents a form of African agency, however dependent on the mainland these islands appear to be. The causal mechanisms of the integration of the French Indian Ocean territories combine historical legacy (choosing France), institutional evolution (departmentalisation), common economic and military security challenges, the cost calculus of mainland France's readiness to govern ultramarine territories and a widely shared set of beliefs in the value of remaining French. Given the poverty challenges to sustainable development and its relationship with various macroeconomic factors, the aim of this research is to appraise the implications of energy security, economic growth, trade openness, and foreign direct investment (FDI) on the poverty in Sub-Saharan African (SAA) countries, which are at the forefront of the countries with the highest poverty. The data sample comprises 38 countries from this region, for the period of 2000–2021. The methodology applied consists of the AutoRegressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) estimator, with Pooled Mean Group (PMG) method in order to examine the short- and long-term relationship between variables. The main findings provide important evidence that the economic growth is not reflected in reduction of poverty in the current economic system of SSA countries, due to the fact that poverty is closely related to income distribution. Since the Syrian conflict began in 2011, Lebanon has maintained an incomplete vision for its most recent wave of refugees, specifically through its "zero-camp" policy for displaced Syrians. However, it has provided no alternative shelter. In a country with no comprehensive affordable housing scheme, this has led displaced Syrians to seek informal ways of accessing spaces of refuge on their own and UNHCR to become the leading humanitarian organization in helping the most vulnerable refugees access shelter. The research reported in this field note, drawing on interviews, discussions, participant observation and analysis of secondary data, investigates how these displaced Syrians have accessed shelter and tenure in two upscale neighbourhoods in Beirut, navigating a delicate balance of legal, social, economic and spatial factors shared by both the displaced and local communities. The situation has been further complicated by Beirut's historic sectarian divisions. The findings of the study provide an update on Syrian refugee self-settlement after the 2019 economic crisis in well-to-do neighbourhoods in Beirut, challenging the assumption that the shelter available to refugees in privileged areas might provide greater security in dire economic times. Family researchers have considered the presence of marriage plans to distinguish between non-marital cohabiting unions. We assess, in the context of emerging adulthood, whether marriage plans differentiate between cohabitors in terms of psychological well-being. Analyzing data from the Toledo Adolescent Relationships Study (TARS), we examined associations for depressive and anxiety symptoms in a sample of 300 emerging adult cohabitors. We also compared cohabitors with 216 married emerging adults (total N = 516). We also assessed relationship quality and economic security as possible confounding factors. Results suggested that cohabitors without marriage plans experienced more frequent anxiety and depressive symptoms. However, significant associations did not remain in multivariable models, particularly when considering economic security. Findings indicate that marriage plans may be inadequate for differentiating between cohabitors' well-being. We find that economic security and discrete relationship quality measures better explain differences than marriage plans. [Purpose] The purpose of this study is to discuss, based on international as well as national laws and practices, various issues and potential solutions surrounding the growing problem of money laundering practices using cryptocurrency transactions. [Methodology] A balanced combination of theoretical and empirical methods has been used in the course of research; in particular, the method of comparative legal research has been employed extensively throughout the text of article. The theoretical component of this research paper includes commentaries by Ukrainian, German, other European as well as American researchers in this field. Their works are cited appropriately. The subject scope of the paper covers modern phenomenon of money laundering based on cryptocurrency transactions. [Findings] This paper extensively discusses international and national legal frameworks for identifying and stopping as well as preventing various money laundering schemes and techniques based on cryptocurrency transactions and blockchain technology in general. It has been established that with the global cryptocurrency market valued at roughly $1 trillion, its attractiveness to money launderers endangers economies and financial systems of numerous world jurisdictions. Based on theoretical observations and relevant analyses of legal cases, authors' conclusions on how to fight this latent type of criminality have been presented. [Practical Implications] The research is deemed to be of value to national regulators, law enforcement agents and legal commentators, who think, write and act with the goal of fighting new money laundering patterns. It can serve as part of a broader international roadmap on how to identify suspicious money laundering schemes using various cryptocurrency transactions and also to impose effective sanctions on criminal actors behind those schemes. Countries in East and Southeast Asia are caught in the US-China rivalry. Even though some countries choose to side with the US or China, a large number of them try to stay somewhere in between (i.e., hedging) so as to manage the risks and to gain as much as possible from the two big powers. This paper attempts at defining hedging along with the associated notions of balancing and bandwagoning in a two-dimensional issue space which incorporates both security and economic concerns, and looking for possible factors (e.g., China's vassal states in history, US formal allies, territorial disputes with China, cultural background, democracies, economic conditions, Belt and Road Initiative, and population size) that may affect the positions taken by the small states/middle powers in the region. AbstractThe rise of artificial intelligence (AI), represented by ChatGPT, has triggered a new wave of technological competition between nations. Major powers like China and the United States, backed by abundant resources, dominate the discourse and hold a significant advantage in the AI field. However, as the technological rivalry between these two countries intensifies, AI represents a classic ‘double-edged sword’ for many small and medium-sized countries. Therefore, the core argument of this paper is that the AI policies of small and medium-sized countries are not simply about bandwagoning or depending on major powers. At their core, these policies represent a complex form of technological hedging. External security concerns drive small and medium-sized countries to adopt hedging as a primary strategy, while internal interest preferences influence the varying intensities of this technological hedging. The findings of this paper indicate that small countries’ technological policies can be categorized into three models: strong hedging, medium hedging, and weak hedging. Different paths of technological hedging reflect the rational balance these nations make between security and economic interests in different contexts. The case of AI development in ASEAN also demonstrates the significant imbalance between member states. Singapore is classified as a technological frontrunner, while Malaysia, Indonesia, and Vietnam are categorized as followers. Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar, Thailand, Brunei, and the Philippines are considered latecomers in the field of AI. In terms of specific AI policies, Singapore and Vietnam adopt a strong technological hedging strategy, seeking more cooperation and interaction with the U.S. or other countries due to caution and concerns about China’s technological security. Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and the Philippines follow a medium hedging strategy, while Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and Brunei adopt a weak hedging approach. The differences in hedging intensity are primarily due to varying internal legitimacy pathways and the strength of backup resources. Amid increasing geopolitical tensions between Western powers and China over the alleged state-capitalist nature of Chinese corporate internationalization, European governments have introduced a set of political measures tightening their trade and investment regimes on grounds of national security and economic competitiveness. This article analyzes how this "geoeconomic turn" in Europe affected the internationalization of (state-backed) Chinese firms into Europe and hence the establishment of Sino-European corporate relations. With a focus on the Chinese ICT and automotive industries, we zoom in on corporate internationalization by distinguishing two modes: (a) outward foreign direct investments (greenfield investments and mergers and acquisitions) and (b) the formation of collaborative ties (strategic alliances and joint ventures) with European companies--a hitherto underexplored form of Sino-European corporate relations. Our analysis is predicated on a comprehensive dataset consolidating information on both modes of internationalization for the period 2000-2023. We show that, in relation to investment numbers, Chinese companies continue to expand into Europe, even if values are decreasing. We also find that the formation of collaborative ties (strategic alliances and joint ventures) has not halted but increased in the wake of Europe's geoeconomic turn, indicating a further intensification of Sino-European corporate relations, though under the radar of tightening investment policies and mechanisms. When unpacking the variegated impact of the geoeconomic turn on Chinese companies' internationalization strategies in Europe, our study also finds, however, that its ramifications vary substantively-not only per sector but also among companies exposed to varying degrees of party-state permeation. Applying a novel fine-grained measure to party-state permeation, the article shows that the geoeconomic turn seems to have affected predominantly those leading Chinese firms with a high party-state exposure. A decline in a person's economic security relative to that of their relatives, neighbors, and any other group used by people in comparing themselves is correlated with emotional states of loss, anger, anxiety, and decline in subjective well-being. Using publicly available data on voting patterns for 910 selected counties in the United States in four presidential election cycles (2008, 2012, 2016, and 2020), we find that if people in a county experience downward mobility in relative economic security, the county that was once majority Democratic would likely shift to majority Republican voting. Linking nano with macro – opportunities for steel construction Nanostructured metallic multilayers have significantly higher strength, fatigue resistance and ductility than monolithic homogeneous metal cross sections. The superior structural properties of these nanostructured cross sections are known, and so it is surprising why no attempt has been made to date to use nanostructured cross sections in macro cross sections in structural engineering to improve the cross section properties. This paper links the advantages of nanostructured multilayers with the needs of homogeneous metallic macro‐cross sections and examines the question of the extent to which the high‐performance material nanolaminate can compensate for the structural weak points of metallic infrastructure. The following weak points of metallic infrastructure are addressed: 1) the welded connection subjected to fatigue and corrosion, 2) additively printed metallic cross sections exposed to fatigue and corrosion. The article provides food for thought on how nanostructured multilayer can potentially contribute to the future of steel construction. As an example, the design and maintenance of cyclically loaded metallic infrastructure structures, such as bridges and offshore wind turbines, are discussed and it is shown how sustainability, resource conservation, reduction of the CO2 footprint, availability, security of supply and economic viability of steel infrastructure structures can potentially be achieved. Satellite-derived evapotranspiration (ETa) products serve global applications, including drought monitoring and food security assessment. This study examines the applicability of ETa data from two distinct sources, aiming to analyze its correlation with crop yield (rice, maize, barley, soybean). Given the critical role of crop yield in economic and food security contexts, monthly and yearly satellite-derived ETa data were assessed for decision-makers, particularly in drought-prone and food-insecure regions. Utilizing QGIS, zonal statistics operations and time series graphs were employed to compare ETa with crop yield and ET anomaly. Data processing involved converting NRSC daily data to monthly and extracting single-pixel ET data using R Studio. Results reveal USGSFEWS as a more reliable ETa source, offering better accuracy and data continuity, especially during monsoon seasons. However, the correlation between crop yield and ETa ranged from 12% to 35%, while with ET anomaly, it ranged from 35% to 55%. Enhanced collection of satellite-based ETa and crop-yield data is imperative for informed decision-making in these regions. Using individual-level tax filing data, we simulate basic incomes for Nunavut. We identify basic incomes that are feasible within Nunavut's budget and that deliver the greatest poverty reduction for the lowest cost. We find that Nunavut could implement a small basic income using savings from the elimination of Nunavut tax credits and income assistance. Given the low tax base in Nunavut, a more generous basic income would require federal funding. A basic income could mitigate concerns such as food insecurity but would not eliminate the need for programs such as housing nor completely cover harvesting costs. The current Nunavut income assistance program requires that recipients participate in "productive choices." Similar conditions, which are often conditions of Indigenous basic incomes, would be difficult to implement in a basic income administered through the tax system. In few industries does the transfer of industrial leadership play a more significant role in the hegemonic competition between superpowers than in the semiconductor industry. As shown in the case of the United States (US)–Japan semiconductor conflict in the 1980s, who takes the lead will be critical in determining the future trajectory of the hegemonic competition between the US and China. This study examines how economic–security linkages and chip-related factors jointly affect the US–China Chip War and the evolving dynamics in Asia at the regional level. The economy–security nexus responds sensitively to the geopolitical structure and degree of economic dependence. Changes in the geopolitical structure create variations in which the economic–security nexus is sometimes either integrated or separated. Chips are currently the world's most critical technology, evolving quickly to create technological regimes and path dependence. Among the diverse technological features of semiconductors, this study focuses on the industrial position of an individual economy's specialization in the chip value chain. Individual states devise statecraft strategies to maximize their economic security gains and minimize risks. In the semiconductor sector, the joint effects of the economic–security nexus and chip-related factors shape each involved economy's statecraft strategy. This study theoretically reveals the concrete mechanisms through which the changing economic–security nexus shapes the economic statecraft of individual economies in the semiconductor value chain. The study also explores how East Asian economies adopt their own strategies along the spectrum of balancing, hedging, and bandwagoning in the context of competition between superpowers. This commentary explores the promises surrounding the construction of a new coalmine in Whitehaven in the UK. The impacts of the closure of carbon‐heavy coal facilities increasingly feature in scholarship and policy understandings of energy transitions: illuminating the importance of the temporalities of transition. We seek to further such temporal understandings to highlight the importance of 'futures' in discussions of coal, which despite promises of abatement maintains a significant presence in global energy relations. We explore how the Woodhouse Colliery at Whitehaven has come to represent a series of fixes—in both socio‐ecological and affective terms: promising new futures of work, energy and regional development. These futures are contested by opponents of the project, who highlight the emissions to be associated with the site. In tracing these competing futures, we illuminate the intricate ties between historic industry, present‐day regional identity and economies, and the role and presence of carbon in visions of what comes next. In this paper we explore the imagined futures associated with the proposed Woodhouse Colliery in Whitehaven in the UK. Grounded in promises of future economic security and the substitutability of coal extracted in Whitehaven for coal from other regions, we argue that these promissory futures play an important role in national and international debates about the direction of a transition away from fossil fuels. Democracies in the Indo-Pacific are facing an increasingly competitive and securitized environment, as China turns more assertive and the US-China rivalry escalates. Disruptions include uncertainty about the global economic order, technological decoupling, an arms race amidst intense hot spots, an economic security spiral, and larger systemic risks around climate change, AI governance, etc. Countries such as Japan and Korea are actively responding to these risks through a strategic approach to economic security and increased defense spending, active alliance development, and parallel continued investment in global institutions and dialogue. Canada must be jolted out of its-business-as-usual approach and take a cue from its closest partners in Asia. This includes investing rapidly in its security (2% of defense over GDP) and the creation of an economic security council under the Prime Minister. Northern Bangladesh is more vulnerable to climatic variability, flash floods, upstream heavy rainfall, early floods during the pre-monsoon period, two or three times flooding in a certain year, and poverty as well. This paper explicitly focuses on the socio-environmental challenges associated with the 2017 flood disaster in northern Bangladesh. This study is based on mixed methods. Almost data of the study are collected from primary sources (household survey, FGD) and the remaining data are obtained from authorized sources. The devastating floods in 2017 inundated one-third of Bangladesh, destroyed nearly 700,000 homes and damaged 4,680,000 hectares of cropland. In addition, the socio-economic conditions of the 2017 flood victim HHs in northern Bangladesh are sub-standard compared to other regions of Bangladesh. Some sort of variables (geophysical environment and human interventions) make floods vulnerable. Therefore, social and economic security, rebuilding damaged infrastructures and institutions, public awareness, and regional and delta planning are crucial parts of the mitigation of the effects of disastrous floods in northern Bangladesh. Industrial policy is a critical element that determines the development of economic sectors, including the defence industry. In today's context of growing geopolitical tensions, technological progress and globalisation, effective functioning and development of the defence industry is highly relevant. The purpose of the work is to investigate the role of industrial policy in the formation of the most effective strategies and approaches to the development of the defence-industrial complex and the possibility of their adaptation in Ukraine. The study was conducted using comparative, systemic and SWOT analyses. The results showed that each country under consideration – the United States, France and China – has unique opportunities for developing the defence industry but also faces specific threats. The defence industry of these countries is a complex system that encompasses big corporations, research institutions, and government agencies. All of them receive considerable funding from the state budget, invest in research and development, and collaborate with international partners, which allows their products to be of high quality and innovativeness. The USA has the largest defence budget and significant technological capabilities but depends on political decisions and high costs. France has a solid technical base but faces limited budgetary resources and dependence on European politics. China is showing a significant increase in its defence budget, but limited international cooperation is hindering the stable development of its defence industry. The findings show that a balanced industrial policy that combines economic and international legal aspects is the key to creating a sustainable and competitive defence industry. The purpose of scientific research is to analyse peculiarities and identify the problems of institutionalization of the innovative activity of enterprises as prerequisites for modernity and the post-war recovery of the economy of Ukraine. The results of the conducted research suggest that the innovative activity of enterprises directly depends on the quality of the state's development within the limits of innovation and on the quality of methodological, financial, economic, technical and technological support of the sphere of innovations. The article reveals the essence of the innovative activity of enterprises and the innovative development of the economy, as well as identifies their mutual influence and interconnection. It has been found that states with a high level of economic development can provide more convenient prerequisites for the implementation of innovative activities by enterprises and form effective mechanisms for their protection from the challenges and dangers of the external and internal environment. The article identifies significant problems in intensifying the innovation activity of enterprises in Ukraine in the context of war, which are associated with a high level of imperfection of modern technology transfer mechanisms, outdated material and technical base, raw material export specialisation and the advantage of a high level of technological imports. In order to outline the strategic vectors of stimulating the innovation activity of enterprises as a factor in strengthening security of their economy, the main measures to minimise the negative impact of destabilising factors are proposed, in particular, the need to increase the level of professional competence of employees of enterprises in introducing innovations and conducting innovation activities, to increase the volume of financing of the innovation sphere, to reduce the impact of military challenges and dangers, to form preferential programmes for lending innovative activities, and to attract external investors to participate in innovative projects is proved. Background: The corn supply chain is vital for food security and economic stability regionally and globally. This study integrates sustainable supply chain management with location optimization to address trade-offs from climate change, economic viability, and environmental impact while assuming the constant social obligation inherent in the supply chain structure. Methods: This study employs a mixed-integer programming (MIP) framework to optimize facility locations in North Dakota, including corn production zones as suppliers and ethanol plants as consumers. Primary objectives include cost minimization and greenhouse gas reduction, enabling the prioritization of economic or environmental goals as per organizational strategies and regulations. This approach ultimately maximizes resource utilization by ensuring efficient production and distribution practices. Results: The case study results highlight the optimal selection of 20 out of 30 corn production zones to meet statewide ethanol plant demand efficiently. Using compressed natural gas (CNG) instead of diesel could potentially save USD 2 million annually and cut carbon emissions by up to 1148 thousand tons per year, demonstrating meaningful progress toward economic and environmental sustainability within the supply network. Conclusions: The presented work offers a systematic methodology for designing sustainable supply chains for various agricultural products, aligning with the broader goal of promoting sustainability and resilience for efficient agricultural production and distribution systems.
