In this article, a spectral polarimetric filter named moving spectral depolarization ratio (MsDR) filter is proposed to mitigate the effects of clutter and noise for dual-polarization weather radar without cross-polar measurements. The filter is based on a spectral polarimetric variable termed as spectral depolarization ratio (sDR). sDR can be estimated by any polarimetric weather radar, making the MsDR filter widely applicable. Taking advantage of the spectral polarimetric features and the range-Doppler continuity of precipitation, the MsDR filter is implemented in the range-Doppler spectrogram. The performance of the MsDR filter is assessed using data collected by 1) an X-band full-polarimetric radar interfered by narrow-band clutter (both stationary and moving) and sidelobe wind turbine clutter; 2) a C-band operational dual-polarization radar affected by radio frequency interference. In addition, the implementation of the MsDR filter is straightforward, and the computational complexity is relatively low. Hence, the MsDR filter has great potential to be applied in real-time for operational radar systems at different frequencies.

A previous study has used the stable and peculiar echoes backscattered by a single “bright scatterer” (BS) during five winter days to characterize the hardware of C-band, the dual-polarization radar located at Monte Lema (1625 m altitude) in Southern Switzerland. The BS is the 90 m tall metallic tower on Cimetta (1633 m altitude, 18 km range). In this note, the statistics of the echoes from the BS were derived from other ten dry days with normal propagation conditions in winter 2015 and January 2019. The study confirms that spectral signatures, such as spectrum width, wideband noise and Doppler velocity, were persistently stable. Regarding the polarimetric signatures, the large values (with small dispersion) of the copolar correlation coefficient between horizontal and vertical polarization were also confirmed: the average value was 0.9961 (0.9982) in winter 2015 (January 2019); the daily standard deviations were very small, ranging from 0.0007 to 0.0030. The dispersion of the differential phase shift was also confirmed to be quite small: the daily standard deviation ranged from a minimum of 2.5° to a maximum of 5.3°. Radar reflectivities in both polarizations were typically around 80 dBz and were confirmed to be among the largest values observed in the surveillance volume of the Monte Lema radar. Finally, another recent 5-day data set from January 2020 was analyzed after the replacement of the radar calibration unit that includes low noise amplifiers: these five days show poorer characteristics of the polarimetric signatures and a few outliers affecting the spectral signatures. It was shown that the “historical” polarimetric and spectral signatures of a bright scatterer could represent a benchmark for an in-depth comparison after hardware replacements.

Aiming at removing stationary and moving clutter while retaining precipitation for dual-polarization weather radar, a new clutter suppression method, named the object-orientated spectral polarimetric (OBSpol) filter, is put forward in this paper. Based on the spectral polarimetric feature and the range-Doppler continuity of precipitation, the OBSpol filter generates a filtering mask implemented on the raw range-Doppler spectrogram to mitigate the clutter and noise. The procedures are as follows. After the spectral polarimetric filtering and the mathematical morphology method, one binary mask where “1” indicates the precipitation is obtained. Then, the contiguous bins of the same value “1” in the range-Doppler domain are grouped in areas termed as objects. Whether the produced objects are precipitation or not will be further judged based on appropriate weather radar observable. Thus, combining all the filtered separate objects, a filtering mask can be obtained. In this paper, data collected by the polarimetric Doppler IRCTR drizzle radar are used to demonstrate and assess the performance of the proposed technique in the case of ground clutter, narrowband moving clutter, and noise. Two precipitation cases are examined: 1) moderate precipitation with large scale and 2) light precipitation with severe clutter contamination. In the range-Doppler spectrogram, both stationary and narrowband moving clutters are mitigated, while maintaining nonoverlapping precipitation signal. This helps to solve the problem when clutter and precipitation overlap in the time domain. In addition, the OBSpol filter is proven to be effective with different Doppler velocity resolutions. This technique can be applied in real-time due to its low computation complexity. Moreover, the spectral polarimetric filtering can be designed using the measurements of dual-polarization radar systems which do not have cross-polar measurements. “Bright” scatterers are useful for monitoring modern weather radars. In order to be “bright”, a point target with deterministic backscattering properties should be present at a near range and be hit by the antenna beam axis. In this note, a statistical characterization of the echoes from a metallic tower located on Cimetta, at an 18 km range and at the same altitude as the Monte Lema radar, is presented. The analysis is based on five clear sky days (1440 samples with a spatial resolution of 1° × 1° × 83.33 m). The spectral and polarimetric signatures are striking: The spectrum width is perfectly stable; the mean radial velocity is very stable; the radar reflectivity is also quite stable, with the vertical (V) polarization being more variable than the horizontal (H) one. As far as the polarimetric information is concerned, the daily average of the differential reflectivity is approximately 1 ± 0.9 dB. The copolar correlation coefficient between H and V is remarkably large (0.9962, on average) and stable. It is believed that these unique and stable ground clutter signals could be used to monitor operational dual-polarization weather radars.

A new algorithm called self-consistent with optimal parameterization (SCOP) for attenuation correction of radar reflectivities at low elevation angles is developed and evaluated. The SCOP algorithm, which uses optimal parameterization and best-fitted functions of specific attenuation coefficients and backscattering differential phase shift, is applied to X-band dual-polarization radar data and evaluated on the basis of radar observables calculated from disdrometer data at a distance of 35 km from the radar. The performance of the SCOP algorithm is compared with other algorithms [reflectivity-differential phase shift (ZPHI) and full self-consistent (FSC)] presented in the literature. Overall, the new algorithm performs similarly to ZPHI for the attenuation correction of horizontal-polarization reflectivity, whereas the FSC algorithm exhibits significant underestimation. The ZPHI algorithm tends to overestimate small rain-path attenuation values. All algorithms exhibit significant underestimation at high differential rain-path attenuation values, probably due to the presence of hail along the path of the radar beam during the examined cases. The new SCOP algorithm has the potential to retrieve profiles of horizontal and differential reflectivities with better accuracy than the other algorithms due to the low error of the parameterization functions used in it. Typical radar calibration biases and measurement noise are sufficient requirements to ensure low errors of the proposed algorithm. Modern polarimetric weather radars typically provide reflectivity, differential reflectivity, and specific differential phase shift, which are used in algorithms to estimate the parameters of the rain drop size distribution (DSD), the mean drop shape, and rainfall rate. A new method is presented to minimize the parameterization error using the Rayleigh scattering limit relations multiplied with a rational polynomial function of reflectivity-weighted raindrop diameter to approximate the Mie character of scattering. A statistical relation between the shape parameter of the DSD with the median volume diameter of raindrops is derived by exploiting long-term disdrometer observations. On the basis of this relation, new optimal estimators of rain microphysical parameters and rainfall rate are developed for a wide range of rain DSDs and air temperatures using X-band scattering simulations of polarimetric radar observables. Parameterizations of radar specific path attenuation and backscattering phase shift are also developed, which do not depend on this relation. The methodology can, in principle, be applied to other weather radar frequencies. A numerical sensitivity analysis shows that calibration bias and measurement noise in radar measurements are critical factors for the total error in parameters estimation, despite the low parameterization error (less than 5%). However, for the usual errors of radar calibration and measurement noise (of the order of 1 dB, 0.2 dB, and 0.3 \deg\ \km^-1 for reflectivity, differential reflectivity, and specific differential propagation phase shift, respectively), the new parameterizations provide a reliable estimation of rain parameters (typically less than 20% error).
