1. Gender perspectives on the current application of young responsible pharmacist management competencies.

Abstract

Background: There are five management functions essential to effective management. The South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC) outlines six competency standards relating to management. Pharmacists can become responsible pharmacists (RPs) directly after completion of their internship i.e. in their community service year. Methods: Quantitative research with a cross-sectional component, which falls into the positivist approach, was used. Questionnaires were sent out to all RPs in South Africa under the age of 35. Results: Most female RPs were found to be at entry level when measured using the competency standards, while the male respondents were between intermediate and advanced, even though the female respondents had been pharmacists for longer and had more years of experience. Conclusion: Gender does not play a significant role in the RP's ability to manage a pharmacy, but training does. More research needs to be done to determine if this gender disparity can be addressed by the development of a management training course that is focused on the operation of a pharmacy. Likewise the possibility of introducing a minimum level of training to be registered as an RP, needs to be considered. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

4. (What we don’t know about) Sign Languages in Higher Education in Europe: Mapping Policy and Practice to an analytical framework

Abstract

This paper focuses on issues related to sign language policies in Higher Educational Institutes (HEIs) in Europe. Drawing on the analytical framework proposed by Darquennes/Du Plessis/Soler (2020, i.e. this volume), which serves to address HEI language planning issues at macro, meso and micro levels, we carry out an inventory of how these issues play out for sign languages across Europe. Our investigation reveals the scarcity of information about sign language policies in HEIs, relating to both sign language as a language of instruction and as a subject of study. What becomes clear is that language planning activities (sign language acquisition, sign language status and corpus planning) are taking place in many countries but tend to go undocumented and unresearched. Given the increase in formal recognition of sign languages across Europe, coupled with the ratification of the UN’s Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (2006) by all EU member states, it would seem logical to expect that the status and prestige of sign languages would rise, with greater visibility of, and planning for, incorporation of sign languages in HEIs. However, the reality of the situation is unclear, suggesting the need for coordinated effort, supported by key pan-European bodies like the Council of Europe, the European Centre for Modern Languages and the European Commission, to ensure that sign language policy is on the agenda as parts of a rights-based response to deaf communities and the sign languages of Europe. Equally important is the need for European HEIs to embrace sign languages and ensure that they are part of the linguistic landscape. This will support and promote the status planning of sign languages and open up access to HEIs for deaf communities, a group that remains under-represented in academia.

7. A visual semiotic analysis of the hidden meanings, myths and ideologies in Old Mutual South Africa's CSR 2.0 corporate advertising

Abstract

The aim of this exploratory study was to investigate the underlying meanings of Old Mutual South Africa’s (OMSA’s) CSR 2.0 corporate advertisements. It specifically examined the underlying myths and ideologies conveyed through the texts. This qualitative study was conducted by means of a visual semiotic analysis (Machin 2012) on eight CSR 2.0 corporate advertisements, which were purposively selected. A theoretical framework to measure visual CSR 2.0 corporate advertisements was developed, which aided in the sampling, data analysis and interpretation processes. The findings of the study indicated that by positioning its CSR 2.0 positively in terms of change and transformation, progress and equal opportunities for all citizens, OMSA is fostering stakeholder-organisation relationships. In addition, it was also found that OMSA adopts established representational tropes of CSR 2.0 and use them repetitively that firmly entrenches the intended/encoded message to the viewer., Die doel van hierdie verkennende studie was om die onderliggende betekenis van CSR 2.0 korporatiewe advertensies in Ou Mutual Suid-Afrika te ondersoek. Dit is spesifiek gemoeid met die onderliggende mites en ideologieë wat deur middel van die tekste oorgedra word. Die kwalitatiewe studie is uitgevoer deur middel van 'n visuele semiotiese ontleding (Machin 2012) op agt CSR 2.0 korporatiewe advertensies, wat doelbewus gekies is. 'n Teoretiese raamwerk, om visuele CSR 2.0 korporatiewe advertensies te meet, is ontwikkel, dit het bygedra tot die steekproefneming, data-analise en interpretasie prosesse. Die bevindinge van die studie dui daarop dat deur CSR 2.0 positief in terme van verandering en transformasie, vooruitgang, en gelyke geleenthede vir alle burgers te posisioneer, OMSA verhoudings met belanghebbendes kan bevorder. Daarbenewens is ook gevind dat OMSA gevestigde temas van CSR 2.0 implementeer en hulle herhaaldelik gebruik wat juis die beoogde / gekodeerde boodskap stewig aan die kyker bevestig.

Abstract

Advances in the information and communication technologies have led to the availability of a range of primary and secondary legal research publications online via the Internet, rather than on other storing devices such as compact discs or publications in the print media. Not only has information and communication technology (ICT) impacted on the availability of legal information resources, but its effects are also noticed in various law-related areas such as legal practice management, legal education, corporate governance and the law per se. The question addressed by this article is whether the application of ICTs has an effect on the practice of law, and specifically whether information and knowledge management affects the processes of legal research in modern legal practice. Various issues are considered in this regard, including what the concept of knowledge management (KM) entails in a law firm and what the current KM trends in South African law firms are. The article investigates global trends in the application of ICTs for legal research purposes, what the specific applications of KM in support of legal research may be, how information technology applications and KM systems and strategies can support the legal research process, and what the benefits of KM are to legal research. It finally discusses the impact technology has had on the skills required of competitive legal professionals.

17. Information and Knowledge Management at South African Law Firms

Abstract

Global and national law firms alike operate in a challenging business environment and managing the firm's information and knowledge assets is increasingly viewed as a key factor in efficient legal service delivery. In legal practice, information management technologies, for example intranets, portals, workflow management systems, document and content management systems, case and project management systems and online dispute resolution systems are becoming important means of legal service delivery. The reason for applying information management technologies and implementing knowledge management strategies in law firms is not only to satisfy clients' growing need for a trusted online platform to interact with legal service providers, but for law firms to capitalise on their intellectual assets, to continuously modernise legal practice management, to empower lawyers, to increase productivity, to use time efficiently, to transfer skills and knowledge from senior to junior professionals, to improve service delivery and to gain competitive advantage. This article firstly reviews the role of information and knowledge management in providing an effective legal service to clients and compares foreign and South African law firms' information management related contexts, challenges and benefits. Secondly, it presents the findings of a survey conducted at South African law firms based on their knowledge management practices. The aim of the article is to provide insights into law firm knowledge management and its effect on providing legal services in an online business environment.

Abstract

Since the advent of the latest constitutional dispensation in South Africa, legal researchers have been presented with new opportunities for research into constitutional issues, development and the relationship between constitutional law and other fields. This article investigates how information technology applications can support the legal research process and what the benefits of technology are likely to be to legal research. Furthermore, it investigates the changes and the impact that electronic resources and the digital information environment might have on legal research. This entails a study of the unique characteristics of digital legal research and of the challenges that legal researchers face in a changing information environment.

Abstract

The value of data in society is increasing rapidly. Organisations that work with data should have standard practices in place to ensure successful curation of data. The World Data System (WDS) consists of a number of data centres responsible for curating research data sets for the scientific community. The WDS has no formal data curation framework or model in place to act as a guideline for member data centres. The objective of this research was to develop a framework for the curation of data in the WDS. A multiple-case case study was conducted. Interviews were used to gather qualitative data and analysis of the data, which led to the development of this framework. The proposed framework is largely based on the Open Archival Information System (OAIS) functional model and caters for the curation of both analogue and digital data. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Social media (user-generated content) create many innovative opportunities for those organisations that realise that electronic word of mouth (eWOM) can be powerful in an online environment. eWOM is now considered to provide an organisation's online marketing communication with a competitive edge since consumers know and trust their friends' recommendations regarding products and services. Social media provide organisations with an opportunity to create consumer experiences for consumers by making available social media tools. Organisations are interested in brand online communities because of their ability also to build brand equity and product differentiation in the long term. Although organisations realise the huge potential of social media for eWOM and establishing an organisation's brand, there are no clear theoretical guidelines for social media marketing communication. This article proposes theoretical guidelines in terms of which social media marketing communication can be considered. 42. The Radiation-Initiated Polymerization of Styrene in Wax

Abstract

The presence of a paraffin wax has been found to considerably reduce the radiation dose required to completely polymerize styrene, but no detectable grafting of styrene to wax occurs. The rate of polymerization was found to be greatly dependent on the styrene/wax composition, and the activation energy was determined to be -7.4 kcal/mole. The addition of scavengers indicates a free-radical mechanism which is confirmed by preirradiation experiments, showing the wax to be the main source of initiating radicals. The negative activation energy is explained by an induced gel-effect caused by the semirigid wax matrix, which further enhances the polymerization rate, which cannot be accounted for entirely in terms of increased radical production in the wax.
