The aim of this article is to identify and describe clinical practice performance characteristics for bordered foam dressings in the treatment of complex wounds. Our recently published systematic review of outcomes and applied measurement instruments for the use of bordered foam dressings in complex wounds has led to us identifying a range of important clinical and patient‐centred issues related to this dressing class. Specifically, here, we focus on an overview of performance criteria in the areas of application, adhesion, exudate management and debridement functions of bordered foam dressings. Our hope is that by highlighting the clinical performance criteria, future testing standards for wound dressings will more closely match our clinical expectations and, thereby, assist clinicians to make better wound treatment choices based on meaningful and clinically relevant dressing product performance standards. complex wounds, complex wound care, treatment, bordered foam dressings, dressing performance. Rotary diamond dressers are one of the most widely used dressers for the dressing of vitrified grinding wheels. In this study, we develop a relatively comprehensive dressing mechanism for the rotary diamond dresser that takes into consideration the relationship between the dressing conditions and the dressing trajectories of diamond grits formed on the working surface of a grinding wheel. The dressing mechanism can be used to determine the dressing performance, i.e., whether or not the diamond grits come in contact with the entire circumferential surface of the grinding wheel, known as complete dressing. A computer-aided simulation of the dressing process is developed to visualize the dressing trajectories formed on the working surface of the grinding wheel for a given set of dressing conditions, i.e., the velocity ratio of the rotary diamond dresser to the grinding wheel, up-cut or down-cut dressing, and single-pass or multipass dressing. Using the simulation process, the maximum feed speed of the rotary diamond dresser in single-pass dressing and the minimum number of passes in multipass dressing required to realize complete dressing are examined.

Woundcare Research for Appropriate Products (WRAP) is a novel collaboration WRAP between industry and clinicians, funded by the Engineering and Physical Research Sciences Council. WRAP objectives included the development and testing of methodologies to identify patients’ and clinicians’ needs with respect to wound dressings for exudate management. The management of exudate was the focus because it was demonstrated to be the pivotal problem for patients and clinicians in a study of malignant wounds, and is a recurring problem in other wound types. A clinical note-making system (Treatment Evaluation by Le Roux''s method—TELER®) was validated as a method of collecting observational data of dressing performance in the context of total patient care, thereby involving the users of dressing products. The validation process was a form of consensus where multiple sources of data were used to define patient problems, within the TELER indicators, to measure a change or lack of change in the problems during a period of treatment and care and to draw conclusions about dressing performance and patient experiences.
