Background: Peripheral intravenous catheter (PIVC) insertion and maintenance are the procedures most commonly performed by nurses in clinical settings. However, current catheter failure rates are high, thus compromising the patient's therapeutic plan and well-being. Objective: To understand nurses' practices during PIVC insertion and maintenance. Methodology: A transversal and descriptive study was conducted in a cardiology ward in central Portugal. Nurses' (n = 26) practices during PIVC management were observed and recorded by a research nurse during the morning shift, using a checklist based on transnational standard of care (SoC) recommendations. Results: During PIVC insertion (n = 38) the main digressive areas included glove usage (55.2%), use of the aseptic non-touch technique (44.7%), hand hygiene (18.4%-84.2%), and patient education (28.9%). Regarding PIVC maintenance (n = 66), catheter hub disinfection (78.8%), catheter flushing (53.3%-78.8%), and patient education (24.2%) were the main deviating areas found. Significant PIVC failure rates were found (25.8%). Conclusion: Overall, a substantial number of PIVC-related practices does not comply with current SoC recommendations, which may pose a risk to patient safety and care quality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: during peripheral venipuncture, health professionals are recommended to use a tourniquet above the puncture site in order to potentiate venous distension. Given its characteristics and use in clinical settings, tourniquets may represent a source of microorganism dissemination. However, the results of scientific studies in this area are scattered in the literature. This scoping review aims to map the available evidence on health professionals' practices related with tourniquet use during peripheral venipuncture and associated microbiological contamination. Methods: scoping review following the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology. Two independent reviewers analyzed the relevance of the studies, extracted and synthesized data. Results: fifteen studies were included in the review. Overall, tourniquets were reused without being subject to recurring decontamination processes. It has been found that practitioners share these devices among themselves and use them successively for periods between two weeks and seven and half years. Conclusion: nursing practices related to tourniquet use during peripheral venipuncture are not standard. Reuse of tourniquets may jeopardize the patient's safety if reprocessing (cleaning and disinfection/sterilization) is not adequate, given the type of tourniquet material and microbiota found. New studies are needed to assess the impact of various types of reprocessing practices on tourniquet decontamination and patient safety. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: In the literature, reminiscence therapy (RT) stands out as a non-pharmacological intervention commonly implemented in groups of elderly people with cognitive impairment. Objective: To identify the best available evidence on the effectiveness of RT in cognition, depressive symptoms, and quality of life in elderly people using community support structures. Method of Review: The methodology proposed by the Joanna Briggs Institute was followed. Studies focused on group RT, including elderly people (≥ 65 years old) with cognitive impairment and using community support structures, were considered. Critical analysis, extraction, and synthesis of results were conducted by 2 independent researchers. Presentation and interpretation of results: Two randomized controlled trials and 2 quasi-experimental studies were included (n = 502); the heterogeneity of the studies precluded meta-analysis. Two studies evidenced the benefits of RT to cognition. None of the studies showed the positive impact of the intervention on depressive symptomatology. Regarding quality of life, inconsistent results were found. Conclusions: The RT seems to have a beneficial effect on improving cognition in elderly people with cognitive impairment in a community context. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The lack of structured intervention programs aimed at older people with cognitive impairment in Portugal has been identified as one of the main obstacles to the effectiveness of reminiscence therapy (RT) programs in institutional settings. Thus, well-defined and replicable RT programs should be developed and validated to fill in the gap. Objectives: To develop and validate an RT program. Methodology: The Medical Research Council framework for the development of complex interventions was fol- lowed. The program was developed in four distinct phases, including preliminary phase, modeling, field testing, and consensus conference. Results: The validation process resulted in a program consisting of a core component and a follow-up component, in a total of 21 sessions for group intervention. Conclusion: The RT program, which was designed and validated during this study, demonstrated characteristics adjusted to the context and the construct was meaningful to the target population. The effectiveness of the RT program will be tested in a future pilot study. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
