22. Application of Artificial Neural Networks in Predicting the Thermal Performance of Heat Pipes.

Abstract

The loss of energy by heat is a common problem in almost all areas of industry, and heat pipes are essential to increase efficiency and reduce energy waste. However, in many cases, they have complex theoretical equations with high percentages of error, limiting their development and causing dependence on empirical methods that generate a waste of time and material, resulting in significant expenses and reducing the viability of their use. Thus, Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) can be an excellent option to facilitate the construction and development of heat pipes without knowledge of the complex theory behind the problem. This investigation uses experimental data from previous studies to evaluate the ability of three different ANNs to predict the thermal performance of heat pipes with different capillary structures, each of them in various configurations of the slope, filling ratio, and heat load. The goal is to investigate results in as many different scenarios as possible to clearly understand the networks' capacity for modeling heat pipes and their operating parameters. We chose two classic ANNs (the most used, Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) network, and the Radial Basis Function (RBF) network) and the Extreme Learning Machine (ELM), which has not yet been applied to heat pipes studies. The ELM is an Unorganized Machine with a fast training process and a simple codification. The ANN results were very close to the experimental ones, showing that ANNs can successfully simulate the thermal performance of heat pipes. Based on the RMSE (error metric being reduced during the training step), the ELM presented the best results (RMSE = 0.384), followed by MLP (RMSE = 0.409), proving their capacity to generalize the problem. These results show the importance of applying different ANNs to evaluate the system deeply. Using ANNs in developing heat pipes is an excellent option for accelerating and improving the project phase, reducing material loss, time, and other resources. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

33. EDLE: An Integrated Tool to Foster Entrepreneurial Skills Development in Engineering Education

Abstract

Academic papers on entrepreneurship in engineers' education have been growing in the last decades. However, studies on entrepreneurship in engineering have not sought to analyze how entrepreneurship education, in connection to active learning, design thinking, and Bloom's Taxonomy, inserted in an integrated way, as a tool, might help the process of engineering students' entrepreneurial skills development. Thus, this study has the goal to propose an integrated tool, linked to the principles of entrepreneurship education, active learning, design thinking, and Bloom's Taxonomy, to foster engineering students' entrepreneurial skills development. The tool, called Entrepreneurial Dynamic Learning, is operationalized and validated in a 2-year case study in a Brazilian public university. The study also produces practical implications, and five are highlighted: (1) at the level of governments and policy makers; (2) engineering scientific associations; (3) universities, coordinators, and professors of engineering undergraduate programs; (4) engineering education researchers; and (5) the Brazilian National Confederation of Industry.

Abstract

Preemergent herbicides are a frequent weed control strategy. Considering different crop germinative fluxes, these products must present long-lasting weed control. This study evaluated preemergent herbicides in different germination fluxes of Merremia aegyptia, Mucuna aterrima and Ricinus communis when applied to different quantities of straw and different simulated dry periods. The experiment was conducted in a 4 × 2 × 2 factorial design with four replications. The treatments included four dry periods (0, 30, 60, and 90 days), two straw quantities (0 and 10 t ha-1), and two germination fluxes. The herbicides amicarbazone (1225 g ha-1), imazapic (147 g ha-1), sulfentrazone (800 g ha-1), and tebuthiuron (900 g ha-1) were applied for preemergence weed control, and germination flush fluxes were evaluated at 7, 14, 21, 28, and 35 days after emergence (DAE) while verifying plant dry mass. Amicarbazone controlled less than 80% of the studied species at the 90-day dry period in the presence of straw. Imazapic did not present control residue for any of the species analyzed. Sulfentrazone showed the same control pattern at all germination fluxes, regardless of the amount of straw. Tebuthiuron successfully controlled all species in the first germination flush, exceeding 80% regardless of the amount of straw. Herbicides associated with straw quantities and dry periods have a significant impact on M. aegyptiaca, M. aterrima and R. communis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The thermosyphon is a type of heat exchanger that has been widely used in many applications. The use of thermosyphons has been intensified in recent years, mainly in the manufacture of solar collectors and various industrial activities. A thermosyphon is a vertical sealed tube filled with a working fluid, consisting of, from bottom to top, by an evaporator, an adiabatic section, and a condenser. The study of geyser-boiling phenomena, which occurs inside the thermosyphon is of extreme importance, therefore the experimental analysis of the parameters related to the two-phase flow (liquid-steam), such as void fraction, bubble frequency, bubble velocity, and bubble length are necessary, since these parameters have a significant influence on heat transfer. In this work, a pair of wire mesh sensors was used, a relative innovative technology to obtain experimental values of the reported quantities for measuring these parameters of slug flow in thermosyphons. An experimental setup is assembled and the sensors are coupled to the thermosyphon enabling the development of the experimental procedure. Here is presented an experimental study of a glass thermosyphon instrumented with two Wire-Mesh Sensors, in which the aforementioned slug flow hydrodynamic parameters inherent to the geyser type boiling process are measured. It was measured successfully, as a function of the heat load (110, 120, 130, 140, and 150W), the void fraction (instantly and average), liquid film thickness, translation velocity of the elongated bubbles, lengths of the bubbles, and the liquid slug (displaced by the bubble rise up). It was observed that the higher the heat load, the lower is the bubble translation velocity. For all heat loads, based on the measured length of liquid slug (consequent displacement of liquid volume), caused by bubbles rise from evaporator to condenser, it could be affirmed to some extent that both boiling regime (pool and film) exist in the evaporator. The measured average void fraction (80%) and liquid film thickness (around 2.5mm) during the elongated bubble passages were approximately constant and independent of the heat load.

Abstract

Mini-cutting is the most common commercially used clonal propagation method in Brazil. However, several environmental interferences can impact this process, hindering the production of propagules. Mini-tunnel have been used to overcome these difficulties, allowing for an increase in the productivity of mini-stumps and the rooting of mini-cuttings. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of mini-tunnel models on the mini-stump productivity of two hybrid eucalyptus clones over two seasons. The study was conducted in the seedling nursery of a forestry company located in Alto Vale do Jequitinhonha, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Three models of the mini-tunnel were used: mini-tunnel 35 cm, 55 cm, 55 cm tubular, and without cover (control) over two seasons (cold and hot). The total and effective productivity of mini-cuttings were evaluated and the levels of chlorophyll A and B, total chlorophyll, height, leaf area, and dry matter of the mini-cuttings were determined. Together, season and use of the mini-tunnel influenced the productivity of the mini-cuttings of both clones. Use of the mini-tunnel resulted in high productivity, especially in the cold period. Mini-cuttings produced during the hot season showed greater growth, dry matter, and leaf area than those collected during the cold season. The use of mini-tunnels is an effective method to increase the productivity of clonal eucalyptus mini-gardens, as shown here by its overall positive influence on mini-cuttings of both genotypes., El miniestaca es el método de propagación clonal más utilizado comercialmente en Brasil. Sin embargo, este proceso sufre varias interferencias ambientales que pueden dificultar la producción de propágulos. Los mini túneles se han utilizado para superar estas dificultades, permitiendo también un aumento de la productividad de las minicepas y el enraizamiento de las miniestacas. Este estudio tuvo como objetivo evaluar el efecto de los modelos de mini túneles sobre la productividad de minicepas de dos clones híbridos de eucalipto, en dos temporadas. El estudio se realizó en el vivero de plántulas de una empresa forestal ubicada en Alto Vale do Jequitinhonha, Minas Gerais, Brasil. Se utilizaron tres modelos de mini túneles: mini túnel de 35 cm, 55 cm, tubular de 55 cm y sin cobertura (control), en dos temporadas (frío y calor). Se evaluó la productividad total y efectiva de miniestacas y se determinaron los niveles de clorofila A y B, clorofila total, altura, área foliar y masa seca de las miniestacas. La temporada y el uso del mini túnel, en conjunto, influyeron en la productividad de las miniestacas de ambos clones. El uso del mini túnel resultó en una alta productividad, especialmente en el período frío. Las miniestacas producidos en la estación cálida mostraron mayor crecimiento, materia seca y área foliar, que los recolectados en la estación fría. El uso del mini túnel es un método eficaz para aumentar la productividad de los minihuertos clonales de eucalipto, como lo demuestra aquí su influencia positiva general sobre las miniestacas de ambos genotipos.
